AROUND 270 people attended a special event in Ballygarry House Hotel on Wednesday night to hear Holocaust survivor, Eva Schloss, speak about her experiences.
The acclaimed author and the stepsister of Anne Frank, was present as part of the International Women’s Day Kerry event put on by the Kerry Businesswomen’s Network and the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee.
On the night, there was a drinks reception and a three course meal with the dinner address given by Ms. Deirdre Fanning: Consultant Urologist MBBChBAO (Hons) MMEDSc (Med Ed) MD FRCS (Urology) and Mr. John Curran: Consultant Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon MB MCh FRCSI (Plast).
Afterwards, RTE’s Ryan Tubridy interviewed Ms Schloss where she described her terrible experiences at the hands of the Nazis.
She also received a special gift from Yolande Nieman, a member of the Kerry Businesswomen’s Network. Yolande’s grandfather, who owned a textile factory in Holland, received a brooch from a Dutch Jew for safekeeping during the War.
Unfortunately, nobody came back to claim the brooch and it has remained in the family since. Yolande decided to present it to Ms Schloss to donate it to the Anne Frank Trust.
LOCAL businesses were on show recently as they played a part in a ’48 Hour Business Trail’ as part of the ‘French Connection’ visit that was held at the weekend.
The trail, organises by the Kerry Businesswomen’s Network (KBN), was centered around creating links and enhancing the communication networks between local businesswomen here and those based in Beauvais, France.
The group of French businesswomen were treated to a bird’s eye view of the county as they were whisked away on a helicopter tour to see just what Kerry had to offer. They also attended business meetings, a business tour to Dingle and even integrated some Irish music, racing, pub visits and Irish cuisine into their trip.
KBN held the first event of the trip at the Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee where a number of talks and themes were selected for the evening, ranging from hospitality, HR, education, accountancy and legal services.
The evening was mixed with intense meetings around collaborative opportunities, networking, food, Irish dancing and traditional music from local bands.
The night was deemed a great success with a number of connections being made such as when a young Tralee based college student, currently studying French and Corporate Law in Galway, took the initiative to use the evening to source work experience in France.
He is currently in dialogue with Aurelie Gautier who operates a large family accountancy and legal practice in Northern France.
Over the weekend, the group visited Tralee Greyhound Track and later headed for the Tralee pubs and enjoyed a mix of both traditional and popular music. On Saturday morning the group headed back to France where four of the group have already made arrangements to return this summer with their families.
“We will continue to organise Business trails into Kerry in the future, as a way of promoting all business sectors throughout the Kerry region,” said Liz Maher, Chairperson of Kerry Businesswomen’s Network (KBN).
“KBN are currently planning to reciprocate the visit and a number of KBN members have signed up to visit Beauvais France in early October 2015. It is expected that the French trip will include a trip to Le Manoir Chateaux, a culinary institute run by one of the French group Marie Hélène Desfosse, a wine tasting and culinary evening and some visits to other various French businesses. The trip was a wonerful success and we hope to build on this and encourage networks in other counties to participate in our ‘Kerry Business Trails’,” she said.
NEARLY 160 businesswomen from all over Kerry attended the event ‘Agents of Change-Empowering Women through Education’ last night, at the Ballygarry House Hotel and Spa.
The event was held in advance of International Women’s Day, and was jointly hosted by Kerry Businesswomen’s Network and the European Parliament (EP) office in Dublin.
It was one of the first events to populate the Enterprise month calendar which is organised by LEO Kerry (Local Enterprise Office) Kerry and CEED (Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Development) based in the ITT Kerry.
The seminar featured keynote speakers Deirdre Clune MEP and Deirdre Bounds – Accidental Millionaire and ethical entrepreneur.
The evening was a huge success as the female audience heard Deirdre Clune MEP discuss the many pathways currently been undertaken by the EP with regards to educating women through empowerment.
She outlined the challenges ahead at EU level in order to eliminate gender disparity in education and training. Deirdre also addressed the issues around getting “the right mix” when introducing change in education across Europe.
Deirdre firmly stated “Our role as female legislators in the European Parliament is to encourage the women of Europe to stand together to promote an equal, just and fair society across the world. Equality is more than an abstract concept. It is access to education, opportunity and freedom of thought, identity and expression.
Deidre Bounds, Accidental Millionaire and ethical entrepreneur, left the audience in no doubt that she had endured every aspect of the rollercoaster life one would expect as an entrepreneur.
Deirdre lives in the UK and revealed her story, of how a young girl daughter of Irish parents from Kerry, grew up in a tough housing estate in Liverpool, and went from being an active alcoholic to an English teacher in Asia, an outback bus-driver, stand-up comedienne, wife, mother and finally self-made millionaire.
She spoke about setting up her travel company i– to–i.com, in the beginning of the nineties. After 10 years it became the world’s greatest gap year company and she sold the firm to a FTSE 100 company in 2007 for about £20 million.
Deirdre talked about her eureka moment, drawing the plans for her future business, her zany ideas and her zest for fortune and accomplishment.
However, staying true to her roots she related the many trials and tribulations she encountered along the way. Deirdre not only revealed her successes but also the failures.
She described herself as a huge pile of passion, with masses of mistakes, with a will to make it happen; all of this she combines with a sense of humor. In true entrepreneurial spirit Deirdre also announced that she has just launched her new business “Go Cambio”, which is now based in Cork.
