SCHOOLS all over town were tucking into treats today as Shrove Tuesday arrived.
The children were gobbling up their pancakes when TraleeToday called to Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn ahead of the fasting period of Lent. Making pancakes for the day has become a tradition at the school.
Every year, the teachers prepare the pancake mix and bring it in for Muinteoir Bríd and the Parent’s Association to cook for the children.
The school provided a variety of toppings, much to the delight of students. Chocolate sauce, syrup. sugar, and fruit were some of the toppings on offer.
“They love it!” laughed Cait Uí Chonchúir, the principal of Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn, as the children and adults had great fun on the day. Scroll down for photos…

All told it was an afternoon that couldn’t be battered, um, sorry bettered!
FOLKS around Tralee were busy whisking batter and flipping pancakes this morning for Shrove Tuesday.
Over in CBS Primary School, pupils donned their chef’s hats and aprons and had super fun preparing pancakes for their classes.
“The most popular process by far, has been choosing toppings,” said teacher Michelle Culloty. “We have had some mouth-watering combinations, with Nutella definitely being the strong favourite among all ages. It has been a great morning so far, and the production line is still in full flow,” she added.
Over in Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn, pupils were having similar fun.

Let’s be honest here and admit that January wouldn’t rank high on everyone’s list of favourite months.
Crap weather, no money, and the hangover, after the party that is December, kicks in.
Bu we’re almost through it and we here at TraleeToday.ie felt that we should give people a lift by showing the fun stuff on the way in February…
‘Five Things You Have To Look Forward To In February…’
1. Springtime is here…
We had to put this at the top of our list – we are Irish after all and we love talking about weather.
With this recent cold snap and mixed weather that we’ve been having, I think that we’re all due a good sustained period of mild weather and sunshine!
Aren’t we Mother Nature? Please?!
Below: Just a typical January day on the hills outside Tralee…
2. Pancake time…
Falling on February 17, it’s that time of the year to start thinking about what toppings you’re going to devour on your pancakes.
If there’s one thing guaranteed to put a stop to that winter slump, it’s knowing that there is a whole day dedicated to the delicious treats!
It’s probably better not to eat your own body weight in them though.
This is how we’ll be cooking them…
3. StValentine’s Day…
While it may sometimes get cynical press and you may be bombarded by love hearts in every shop you enter, remember, the day is ultimately not just for couples.
It’s for newsagents, jewellers, florists and restaurants of course!
Here’s a tip lads: Cemetery-fresh flowers and a mixed grill in The Snackery does not make for romantic night out…even if you hide the engagement ring in the black pudding.
Oh, and do not do this…
4. Mid-Term Break…
This won’t apply to everyone unfortunately…we’re sorry!
To all the teachers, pupils and lucky college students out there though, it’s getting close to that time when you can afford to put those books down and unwind a bit!
Secondary students should mark their calendars from February 16-February 20 (inclusive) as a time to get more sleep.
Primary schools will have to settle for a little less of a break depending on how their allocation of days has gone so far, with some schools only set to close for a two day period on February 19 and February 20.
Below: Mounthawk students leave school for their mid-term break…
5. Sports, sports and yet more sports…
One for the lads here (mostly). Kerry begin their GAA season, the UEFA Champions League returns and Ireland kick-off in the Six Nations. God we love February…
