Balloonagh Girls To Relive Schooldays At Class Of 1987 Reunion

.

AH, 1987.

The heyday of U2, Madonna and Michael Jackson, Johnny Logan warbling his way to Eurovision glory, Stephen Roche becoming a cycling hero winning the Tour de France and the National Lottery was launched to turn us into millionaires/paupers.

It was also the year a group of over 100 girls in Balloonagh sat the Leaving Cert and began new chapters in their lives.

Well, 30 years on, those chapters will be reviewed and schooldays relived when they get back together in The Ashe Hotel on August 12 for the ‘Class of 1987’ Reunion.

The event is being organised by Rose Dillon a number of other past pupils. A few weeks ago she sent a message on Facebook suggesting the class gather together for a reunion. Through Facebook and WhatsApp they have managed to catch-up with a lot of past pupils.

“I’m getting lots of help from my twin sister Moira Dillon and fellow classmates Irene O’Grady, Caroline Scully, Stella O’Connor (O’Mahoney) and Orla Morton (O’Regan). Between us all and the additional tracking skills of others, we’ve made quick progress in a very short timeframe!” said Rose.

“Mary Dillane (Culloty) had made a detailed list of names of almost everyone in the Debs photo at the time. so we have been working from that and have successfully tracked down all but six girls from the class of 1987,” she added.

“We are very much looking forward to reconnecting and catching up. The large majority of us haven’t been in touch for 30 years. Many are travelling to Tralee for the reunion, from Wicklow, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, all over Ireland really, as well as England and France. Unfortunately some who are in Australia just can’t make it… so, it’s the perfect excuse to plan our next reunion,” said Rose.

Teachers from that period are also invited to come on the night. So Saturday, August 12 in The Ashe Hotel is set to be some get together, where it will be a strictly private event with 1987-only past pupil attendance…complete with name badges!

THERE was a great turnout on Saturday night for a reunion of people who grew up in Oakpark in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

The Meadowlands Hotel was the venue for the get together which was last held 10 years ago but even more showed up this time.

“Some of the people here I haven’t seen in 60 years,” said Mike O’Donnell, who, along with Jacqui Dillon were the organisers of the night.

“It’s great to see them. We’ve one man here, James Chadwick, who lived in Oakpark Terrace, who has come from South Africa to be here. Others have come from Cork, Dublin and all over the country,” said Mike.

Around 60 were there for food on the night, while others arrived in later in the bar to meet up with old friends. Scroll down for photos…

THERE were laughs and no small amount of great memories recalled at a reunion in Cassidy’s Restaurant on Monday night.

Over 20 girls from the Moyderwell Secondary School ‘Class of 1985’ met up again to share stories, catch up on how their lives and careers have developed and talk about boys no doubt (we know what you girls are like!).

Martina Ryan Murphy was one of the ladies behind the night.

“Many of us had been together since babies in primary school, some then came in from the country schools so we all ended up in ‘Eoin’ or ‘Mhuire’ – they were the two classes,” Martina told us when we called in at the start of the night.

“So we decided to have a 30th reunion. I was here one night with Geraldine McElligott – who owns Cassidy’s here – and Delia Daly and we said ‘why don’t we organise a get-together?’ That was about a month ago and there’s been texts and Facebook messages since. We got a fantastic response. Most of the girls here are from Tralee. There’s one girl here I haven’t seen since we finished 30 years ago and I didn’t recognise her when I saw her,” said Martina.

“Two of our girls here tonight are now the Principal and Vice-Principal of Presentation Secondary School – Mary O’Keeffe and Chrissie Kelly (nee Lee). Moyderwell secondary is gone but there’s a great love for the school. I’m the fifth generation of my family that went to the school,” said Martina.

It was a great night of fun, laughter and stories and no doubt plans were made to repeat the night for a 40th.

THEY came from all corners of Ireland and far beyond to gather in the Austin Stack Clubhouse on Friday night for the St Brendan’s Park reunion.

It took months of organising, but it as worth the effort as hundreds packed into the Rock club over the course of the night for music, song and reminiscing about growing up in the old estate.

A Mass kicked off proceedings at 6pm followed by music, finger food and later, DJ Francie Breen got everyone on the dance floor.

“The attendance is amazing. It’s great to see the smiling faces on everybody, meeting old friends. Unreal is the only way of describing it,” said one of the organisers, Martina Ronan.

“Old and young, they’ve come from all over – Dublin, Donegal, Cork, England, America, everywhere,” added Martina.

The Lynches, Cliffords, Careys and many, many more families attended the celebration of the estate which has spawned many famous figures from sport, the arts and other fields as Gat Carey listed.

“Maurice O’Doherty, the RTE newsreader, Aengus Fanning of the Sunday Independent, his brother Rio the actor, Mikey Sheehy, Purty Landers, Jack Philips, one of the top surgeons in the country, the list goes on,” said Gat, who was attending the event with his nine siblings.

“It’s an unbelievable turnout. I actually met a guy tonight that I never knew lived in St Brendan’s Park – a Dr Brendan Mullins from Abbeyfeale. It’s a great idea to bring people together,” said Gat.

Indeed it was and no doubt many stories were told and friendships renewed over the course of the night.

Well done to all involved.

RESIDENTS of one of Tralee’s oldest estates and one of the town’s top stomping grounds for churning out talent down the years are organising a momentous reunion.

‘The St Brendans Park Reunion’ will take place on Friday, February 13 at the Austin Stacks GAA Clubhouse. This is the night before Austin Stacks are scheduled to play their All-Ireland club semi-final in Portlaoise.

“St Brendan’s Park is one of the oldest estates in Tralee so this will be a great opportunity to meet up with former residents who people may not have seen in years,” said one of the reunion organisers, Johnny Bonner.

St Brendan’s Park was built in the mid 1950s and has given the town some of its most famous names through the years, among them eight-time All-Ireland winner Mikey Sheehy.

Other Kerry greats who lived there include, the ‘Bracker’ Regan and the Landers brothers, Purty and Roundy.

St Brendan’s Park has also contributed giants of Irish media with former RTE newsreader, Maurice O’Doherty and ex-editor of the Irish Independent, the late Aengus Fanning, both hailing from the estate.

“We’ve been talking about doing it for years and years, so we think it’s finally about time we did it,” said Johnny Bonner.

It is hoped that on the night, the Sam Maguire, Bishop Moynihan cup and the Munster Cup will be there also.

“The Christmas period is a good time to get the word out about the reunion because a lot of people will be back of the next couple of weeks,” said Johnny.

IT was a great night for renewing old friendships and making new connections at Stoker’s Lodge on Saturday, as the St John’s Park residents held a reunion for past and present residents.

“The night is a great get-together for neighbours who grew up together around St John’s Park,” said organiser Helen Walsh. “Many of us have moved away now – I myself am gone forty years – but it is great to get us all back together,” she said.

Speaking about getting in contact with everyone, Helen said: “It wasn’t too bad, I was beginning to panic on Thursday but by Friday I knew it was going to get together and fall into place.”

Many old friends caught up and new residents of the estate – which was built back in the 1950s – got to meet and connect with residents of the past.

With food, live music and a DJ, a fun night was had by all.

THE Meadowlands Hotel reverberated with laughter on Friday night when 19 ladies who trained as nurses in a London hospital reunited after 42 years.

“In 1972 there was about 70 people who started training to be nurses in Whipps Cross Hospital and about 40 of them were from Ireland,” said Maria Hickey from O’Rahilly’s Villas, who trained in Whipps Cross.

“It’s 42 years later so we decided to have a reunion. There’s 19 of us here tonight, with four from Tralee, all celebrating our youth.  It was quite emotional meeting again tonight. We did have fun and we all looked after each other as we didn’t know anything about London when we went over there,” said Maria.

There were four Tralee ladies in the group 42 years ago – Maria Hickey, Noreen Leahy, Aileen Shanahan and Eileen Curtin – who enjoyed catching up with their old friends.

“I’ve great memories and they’re all mad,” said Aileen Shanahan from The Spa. “It was daunting going over to London but I suppose we had to because money was scarce at the time, but I’ve great memories,” said Aileen.

The ladies went to Brandon and the Maherees on Friday and they planned on going to Killarney on Saturday, taking in Aghadoe Heights, Ross Castle and Muckross, followed by a trip to Tralee Golf Club for a drink and then for a meal in Spa Seafoods.  No doubt they’ll be more laughter and stories told along the way.

Schooldays Revisited For Balloonagh’s Class of 1997

IT was the year the Spice Girls ruled the planet, Leo and Kate became megastars because of some boat movie and Princess Diana’s death shocked the world.

But for the Class of 97, school was out for good as they graduated from Balloonagh Secondary.

Now one ex-student has decided to hold a reunion to remember those halcyon days…and there won’t be a Naff jacket or pair of X-Worx jeans in sight as the theme will be ‘Dress To Impress’.

Edwina Hurley has issued a call to all those who graduated that year from Balloonagh to come to O’Donnell’s in Mounthawk on August 29 at 8pm.

Blasket ad 4There will be laughs aplenty, finger food, music and fond memories shared, said Edwina, when TraleeToday.ie caught up with her and three other ex-students for a photocall outside the school on Wednesday evening.

“There were a couple of people asking for it to be held as a few from the class have returned to Tralee after being away for a time. So it was felt we deserved a good night after all these years. It’ll be a great girls’ night out to catch up and have a good time,” she explained.

“We had three sixth year classes which graduated so there were over 60 students. I’ve located 20 still living in the Tralee area and there’s a couple coming back from England for it,” continued Edwina.

Any particular memory from that time?

“Just the girls really. We all got on well and there was great banter between us. We all got on with the teachers as well.”

Her schoolmate Yvonne Fitzgerald shared her sentiments.

“Memories? Fun, to be honest. I absolutely loved secondary school and I missed the girls when we finished up. It’s great to get to meet them now because we’ve got such busy lives with work and children now, we never get to socialise together. It’ll be great to let the hair down and be a young one for the night again,” she laughed.

Noelle O’Sullivan’s also had fond memories.

“The back of O’Mahoney’s shop is what I remember. Getting the buns on our 11 o’clock break and just having great fun,” said Noelle.

For Stacey Lawlor it was the friendships that were formed.

“A lot of us still have friends from that time. I’d have two close friends who’ll be coming on the night,” said Stacey.

For anyone who’d like to go on the night and catch up on old times, contact Edwina Hurley O’Driscoll at the Vero Moda fashion store on Abbey Court or through her Facebook page by clicking here.
