It was the first AGM since Killorglin Credit Union was integrated with Tralee and the Union now has assets of €185m.

The Credit Union has €30m available to lend out to members in 2016.
The AGM passed a proposal of 0.75% Dividend of over €1 million to members. They highlighted that the high DIRT tax rate of 41% will mean that over €433,000 of this Dividend will go directly to Revenue.
The proposal to give Borrowers 7.5% Loan Interest Rebate (a refund on the interest they paid on their loans) was also passed with over €320,000 being returned to its borrowers, this is not subject to DIRT.
Tom Lawlor Chairman said “loans are the main source of income for the credit union. This year again €4.3 million (almost 60%) of our income came from our borrowing members so we were delighted to reward our members for borrowing with us”.
A NEW personal loan scheme that helps social welfare recipients is now available in Tralee Credit Union which intends on discouraging people turning to moneylenders.
The ‘It Makes Sense Loan’ was launched on Thursday and is available from Tralee, Cois Sionna (Tarbert) and Killarney Credit Unions.
The aim is to take on moneylenders, as it is estimated that there could be as many as 400,000 people borrowing from them nationwide.
The move that has been welcomed by Arthur J Spring TD who said it will go a long way towards tackling local moneylenders, many of whom are known to target vulnerable households at this time of year.
Deputy Spring said: “This is low-cost personal credit scheme is aimed at people in Kerry on social welfare who may need access to borrowings at short notice but don’t want to be penalised by high interest rates.
“Access to low cost credit is often outside the reach of many families. This pilot scheme will help take families out of the arms of high cost moneylenders. I’m glad that Credit Unions in Kerry will partake in the scheme because it will help combat local moneylenders who charge exorbitant rates.
“The thinking behind the scheme is that it provides local, easily accessible and low-cost loans to those who need them.
“People can borrow from between €100 to €2,000, and most importantly, the interest rate will not exceed 12%. It is open to social welfare recipients and they will be able to use the Household Budgeting Service run by An Post to manage repayments. An Post have also been a crucial partner in the development of this service,” said Deputy Spring.

“Over the last week we have seen in the media the devastation of thousands of people risking their lives to get into Europe in search of a better life. The distressing image of Aylan Kurdi’s body touched the heart strings of every nation, making us stand up and take action. Most people would like to help but are not sure how to go about it so we hope our fundraising account will encourage people to support this campaign and make a donation,” said Fintan Ryan, CEO of Tralee Credit Union.
All money raised will go to the Irish Red Cross Migration Crisis Appeal. Like many of the non -governmental organisations doing humanitarian aid operations, the Red Cross are operating in the frontline of the migration crisis in Italy, Greece, Hungary, Serbia and Former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia,” he finished.
“The support from local communities around Ireland is not only appreciated but really needed to allow us to assist the hundreds and thousands of people risking their lives to get to Europe. Money raised will go towards helping us give frightened and desperate people shelter, water, food and basic items such as clothes, hygiene kits and nappies as well as medical assistance,” said Louise Rattigan from the Irish Red Cross.
“We also give psycho-social support for those who have endured dangerous journeys often involving the deaths of family members and we assist them in tracing and reconnecting families who have been separated along the way,” she finished.

TRALEE Credit Union has apologised to around 2,000 members who had direct debits taken out of their accounts twice last Friday.
The problem occurred due to an upgrade in their IT banking system and relates to Friday’s direct debits only and not any other day.
Tralee Credit Union hope to refund affected members by this Tuesday.
This includes members who have incurred fees charges from their banks as a result of the error overdrawing their accounts and non payment of other scheduled direct debits, which will be reimbursed upon receipt of their bank statements.
Tralee Credit Union says remedial action is being taken to ensure this error does not happen again and offered their sincere apologies for the inconvenience this has caused.
If you are thinking of changing your car this month it’s worth checking out Tralee Credit Union’s low-rate motor loan.
Tralee Credit Union in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin have just reduced their Motor Loan Rate to their lowest rate ever of 6.5% (6.7% APR).
This low rate is available on all new, second hand, personal and commercial vehicles. Speaking to Fintan Ryan CEO: “We have reduced our motor loan rate this summer to meet the increasing demand for low rate motor loans. It’s not just the rate that is important it’s the flexibility of purchase as well,” he explained.
“Remember with a Credit Union Loan you own the vehicle straight away. There are no fees, no balloon payments, no mileage/wear and tear restrictions and you can clear your loan early or make extra repayments with no penalty. We even offer free Loan Protection Insurance.”
“Many garages are now promoting PCP (Personal Contract Plan) as a way of getting your new car. While PCP may have some things going for it, there are also pitfalls that buyers should aware of;
1. You are not buying a car. You are actually renting it.
2. You are using your existing car as a deposit for your first PCP but you will not have a car to trade in next time.
3. There are mileage restrictions and other “fair use” conditions.
4. You will have to enter into a purchase arrangement at the end of the term to “buy” the car you have been driving for three years.
5. PCPs may be “sold” as interest free finance but in fact you are only renting, not buying the vehicle. We would ask you to be fully informed and choose a deal that’s right for you”.

TRALEE and Killorglin Credit Unions have combined after an application by the Central Bank of Ireland to the High Court yesterday.
The high approved the transfer of Killorglin Credit Union (KCU) to Tralee Credit Union (TCU) which now makes TCU the largest community based credit union in Munster with total assets of almost €170 million.
Continued below…
Tralee Credit Union has assumed ownership and management of the assets and liabilities of the Killorglin credit union.
The Central Bank sought the transfer, with the support of the current Board of Killorglin Credit Union, because the credit union was no longer viable as a “stand alone” entity.
In a report prepared by the special resolution unit (SRU) of the Central Bank, a decision to invest €5.4 million in a new premises that is now worth €450,000, poor corporate governance and potential losses on a series of “bullet loans” with delayed repayments, were the causes of KCU’s problems.
The SRU’s report warned of the possibility of a run on KCU if members found out what was going on.
Continued below…
The transfer was undertaken to protect members’ savings and ensure continued access to credit union services within the community.
The transfer has no effect on the day to day operations of the Killorglin office, and members will continue to do business as normal from their office in Mill Road.
All services including savings and lending facilities continue to be available to all members from the credit union which will open as normal. KCU members do not need to take any action, they will be notified by post about the transfer over the coming days.
Like TCU members, KCU now share equal membership and ownership of Tralee Credit Union. Their savings are also automatically covered and protected under the Government Deposit Guarantee Scheme up to €100,000 per account.
“The Board of KCU has worked closely with the Central Bank to resolve our issues and the entire Board wholeheartedly supports this immediate transfer,” said Pat Duffy KCU, Manager.
“The financial issues were as a result of the redevelopment of the premises in 2005 and subsequent decrease in its carrying value. It was also related to poor lending practices and inadequate credit control systems prior to June 2010,” he said.
“Having reviewed all options, the Board feel that this transfer is in the best interest of our members and will bring certainty for the future of the credit union. We will now operate under the management of TCU,” Mr Duffy added.
Tralee Credit Union’s CEO Fintan Ryan said “we would like to thank and acknowledge the hard work of KCU’s Board, Management and Staff who have worked very hard in the last four years trying to keep their credit union operating as a viable business. The Central Bank are assisting with the transfer and are supporting it with a financial package that will safeguard the current reserves of Tralee Credit Union.”
“We are confident that the combined entity, with assets of €169 million will have an ability to be an extremely positive influence on the financial lives of all our members. Coming together will make us the largest community based credit union in Munster with in excess of 41,000 members. We are now well positioned to provide a wider range of services to members. With combined savings of €148 Million and with a Loan Book of €55 Million, we have money to lend and we are lending,” said Mr Ryan.
It will take until Spring 2015 to fully integrate the computer systems, services and the accounts of both credit unions. When completed, all members will have access to their accounts in three offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.
In the meantime, members in the Killorglin area will continue as normal to use their credit union in Mill Road, Killorglin.
According to Fintan Ryan, TCU has weathered the financial storm well and has paid a Dividend on member’s savings every year. This week Tralee Credit Union savers received 1% Dividend and borrowers a 5% Loan Interest Rebate. Tralee Credit Union is confident that it will continue to pay a dividend into the future.
Information on this transfer is available on www.traleecu.ie and on www.killorglincreditunion.ie

TRALEE Credit Union celebrated International Credit Union Day on Thursday by highlighting this year’s theme “Local Service, Global Good” to launch their support for the Ebola crisis.
“The best way we feel that our “local service” as a credit union can do “global good” right now is to fundraise and get local support for the Ebola crisis in West Africa,” said Fintan Ryan, Tralee Credit Union CEO.
“Every time you watch the news or read a paper you see the devastation the Ebola outbreak is having on families and communities in the five West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Senegal. Most people would like to help but are not sure how to go about it so we hope our fundraising account will encourage people to support this campaign and make a donation”.
Tralee Credit Union has opened a credit union account called the Ebola Appeal. All monies raised will go to Medecins San Frontieres Doctors without Borders.
“The support from local communities around Ireland is really appreciated by our staff who are on the front line of the Ebola epidemic,” said Jane-Ann McKenna, Director of Médecins Sans Frontières.
“This week, another doctor and a nurse from Ireland have flown out to Sierra Leone where they will be caring for patients in the isolation centres and working in the community to do follow up contact tracing. The conditions are extremely challenging and heartbreaking, but having so much support from people at home here in Ireland definitely helps. To find out more about the Ebola crisis and our work visit our website www.msf.ie/ebola”.
Donations will go towards supplying complete protective suits, resistant gloves, rehydration salts to help treat infected patients and towards sending doctors to the field to treat Ebola patients in West Africa for a week.

For those of us not lucky enough to win a car, Tralee Credit Union have just re-introduced its low rate motor loan for July and August.
“We are definitely seeing a return in confidence to members borrowing for motor loans. These loans are up 29% on this time last year,” said Fintan Ryan, Tralee Credit Union’s CEO.
“It’s testimony of the bargains currently available from the dealers on new and second hand vehicles, increasing confidence to borrow and purchase and of course to members seeing the benefits of borrowing with us,” he said.
