beige garda symbolGARDAÍ are investigating thefts of gas cylinders from garage forecourts and businesses in the Tralee area.

Thieves are striking at night when the businesses are closed and about 20 cylinders are taken at a time.

Gardaí say the orange cylinders have been offered for sale in estates around Tralee. The cylinders retail for about €30 and are being sold for about €5 or €10. Gardaí say anyone buying these cylinders can be prosecuted for buying stolen property.

Gardaí are advising businesses who sell the cylinders to store them in a place with good lighting and CCTV coverage. The thefts are taking place when the shops are closed and in many cases, the cylinders are locked with just a padlock which can be easily broken.

Gardaí also advise businesses hit by the thieves, to have a look around the area immediately, as thieves are taking the cylinders and storing them nearby, in fields or under bridges, to collect them later.

If you have been offered these cylinders for sale, please contact Tralee Garda Station on 066-7102300.
