A TRALEE artist is planning an exhibition of his work in Tralee soon, in the wake of winnning an international art award.

Last month, 30 year old Damien Slattery from St Brendan’s Park came 1st in the Expressionism Category of the American Art Awards for his self-portrait, ‘Nothing more depraved than a man in his depths’.

The American Art Awards are juried by the 25 Best Galleries and Museums In America and had online art images in 50 categories submitted from artists in 56 countries, so it’s no mean achievement by Damien.

Damien’s self-portrait which won 1st prize in the Expressionism category in the American Art Awards.

“The winning piece was part of a triptych, which is a format I enjoy working in and will be exploring more in the future. It’s made its way to a new home, to an appreciative collector,” Damien told TraleeToday.ie.

He studied art in CSN and Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork and was taught by local artist Rebekah Wall at secondary school level whom, Damien says, was a big influence.

“I am currently organising a group show for the next month or so in town, just waiting to hear back from the venue,” he told us. He will also have an exhibition in Gallery X in Dublin on November 3.

He has donated a piece to Open Arms Kerry for auction and will be exhibiting there too soon. You can view (and buy!) his amazing work online via his Facebook page here or instagram @damienslatteryartist. Damien’s art is also available to buy at Maria Elizabeth’s craft shop at Bridge Place, Tralee.
