A TRALEE-BASED writer and poet won the Emerging Writer Award at the Dalkey Book Festival at the weekend.

Victoria Kennefick is originally from Shanagarry in Cork but now domiciled in Tralee. Her acclaimed collection ‘Eat Or We Both Starve’ won her the award and she will receive a €10,000 prize.

The judged said Eat Or We Both Starve “is a slim volume with an impact that’s heavy-hitting. It delivers everything one looks for in a piece of writing: emotional heft, story, nuance, hope, memorability; and because it’s also quirky, it has the element of surprise”.

Victoria’s book had already been nominated for a Costa Book Award, shortlisted for the prestigious TS Eliot Poetry Prize, it’s an Irish Times Best Poetry Book for 2021 and was also selected as one of The Telegraph’s Best Poetry Books to Buy 2021.
