Know Your Rights: Working On Public Holidays

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Question: I recently worked a public holiday, will I be paid for that day?

Answer: Yes, if you worked on a public holiday, you get either an additional day’s annual leave or an additional day’s pay.

Most employees qualify for public holiday benefit and usually get one of the following:

• A paid day off on the day of the holiday
• An additional day’s annual leave
• An additional day’s pay

Continued below…

.

You are entitled to an extra day’s pay for working the public holiday if you work part-time, if:

• You worked at least 40 hours in the 5 weeks before the holiday
• The public holiday falls on a day you normally work
• If you do not normally work on that particular day (for example, a Saturday), you should get one-fifth of your weekly pay.

Am I entitled to a day off on Good Friday?

No.  This is not a public holiday.  You do not have an automatic entitlement to a day off.

How can I find out what my entitlements are?

There are now 10 public holidays in Ireland each year.   This includes the new annual public holiday which, in 2022 fell on 18 March, and from 2023 will be in early February to mark St Brigid’s Day.  You can find the full list of dates on the citizensinformation.ie website.

• Read more about public holidays and your employment rights 👉 https://bit.ly/3ljy5KL, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Kerry on 0818 07 7860. Finnegan On Films: Hidden Gems And Mummy Issues

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on some movies on TV to make it a super Saturday…

I am sometimes asked ‘what makes a successful film’?

Is it the actors, the directors, the script, marketing, franchise formula?  I always answer by quoting William Goldman, the Oscar winning screenwriter of ‘Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid’ and ‘All The President’s Men’ in his book ‘Adventures in the Screen Writing Trade’ where he explains “nobody knows”.

This weekend’s films bear out his theory.  The BFG (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is adapted from the Roald Dahl book, directed by Steven Spielberg, with a fine talented cast.

A ten year old orphan girl, Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) befriends an elderly, benevolent 24 foot giant, the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance) of the title.

Continued below…

.

He takes Sophie to a magical land, but unfortunately BFG’s fellow giants have an unfortunate appetite for eating humans.

BFG is not popular with his fellow Giants, who refer to BFG as ‘Runt’.  His kind heartedness is seen as letting the side down.  Sophie makes an interesting discovery that gives her a possible solution to saving people, but it will involve the Queen (Penelope Wilton).

This is a film that dampens down the darker elements of the book version, and in Mark Rylance and an exceptional use of Special Effects, this is a magical film to watch, but for some reason did not capture the imagination of the cinema public at the time of release.

Hopefully it will be better appreciated in the times to come, because it is a magical combination of two storytelling geniuses in Dahl and Spielberg.

Continued below…

.

Get Shorty (Saturday 10.20pm TG4) is, quite simply, a Cult Classic.  Adapted from Elmore Leonard’s novel, Chilli Palmer (John Travolta) is a film loving loan shark and Miami mobsterwho goes to Hollywood to get a debt repaid by a B-Movie director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman)

In Hollywood, everyone is in the film business.  Chilli’s impressive knowledge of all things cinema helps him become a movie producer who wants to recruit an Oscar nominated star, Martin Weir (Danny DeVito) and wife Karen (Rene Russo) to appear in his film.

Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and written by Scott Frank, this is considered to be the confirmation of John Travolta’s return to the A-List following Pulp Fiction, winning him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy.

This film was so successful as a sharp comedy thriller satire that Elmore Leonard wrote a book sequel.

The Mummy (Saturday 10.30pm RTE2) was supposed to be a reboot of a franchise, but apparently not everyone wants their Mummy.

US Army soldiers Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) and Chris Vail (Jake Johnson) actions in Iraq uncover the tomb of Princess Ahmanet, results, not only on the soldiers releasing the Princess to seek revenge on them, but also on England.

I wonder could that shady Doctor Jekyll (Russell Crowe) be of assistance to unlock the mystery.  Perhaps he knows another who could as well. Enjoy and stay safe.

Dutch Artist Makes Presentation Of Fr Pat Portrait To Siamsa Tíre

.
Artistic Director Jonathan Kelliher, Lisa McElligott from the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Board of Directors Seán Murphy, artist Henk Heideveld, and Executive Director Róisín McGarr receiving a donation of the artist’s portrait of Siamsa Tíre’s founder, Fr Pat Ahern.

DUTCH artist Henk Heideveld marked the end of his recent exhibition at Siamsa Tíre by donating his portrait of the National Folk Theatre of Ireland’s founder, Father Pat Ahern, to the theatre.

The presentation is timely in the light of Fr Pat Ahern receiving the Kerry Association in Dublin Arts Award this week.

The artwork had been on display as part of ‘God’s First Name is Art’, an exhibition of paintings which included seminal figures from Irish culture.  Featured portraits included Peadar Ó Riada, President Michael D. Higgins, and Fr Ahern.

.

The exhibition was due to open at Siamsa Tíre when Covid hit in 2020. It was rescheduled several times but on each occasion the country went back into lockdown.

Róisín McGarr, Executive Director of Siamsa Tíre, thanked the artist for his gift.  “After two years of delays, the opening night of this exhibition represented the turning point for us in reopening after covid.”

“It has been wonderful to finally host Henk’s impactfulwork. The artist’s generous donation of the portrait of Siamsa Tíre’s founder gives us a memento to remember this watershed moment in Siamsa’s story, as well as a fitting tribute to the man who started that story fifty years ago. We are so grateful to Henk for his boundless positivity and generosity, and we know that visitors will enjoy his work here in the building,” she says.

Fr Pat Ahern Receives Kerry Association In Dublin Arts Award

FATHER Pat Ahern has been announced as the most recent recipient of the prestigious Kerry Association in Dublin Arts Award.

The award sponsored by Kerry County Council is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of artistic, cultural and literary tradition of his native county both nationally and internationally.

In announcing the award Keelin Kissane, Chairperson of the Kerry Association in Dublin said “Fr Pat has had an inspirational impact both in Kerry and internationally.”

Continued below…

.

“He has transferred the magic and music and mystery of Kerry to the stage and projected it magnificently to ever appreciating audiences both at home and throughout the world. He has been a great Ambassador for Kerry.”

Jimmy Deenihan, Chairperson of the Selection Committee also said Fr Pat Ahern is a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.

“But for his vision in establishing Siamsoiri Na Riochta back in the 1960’s the tradition of the music, song and dance  unique to North Kerry may have disappeared.  Fr Pat has translated this rich cultural tradition and has transmitted it on stage and film to a global audience. For him it is people that give rise to culture and culture cannot exist without people,” he said.

A native of Moyvane, Fr Pat was immersed in traditional Irish music from a young age. Having studied for the priesthood, he became a curate at St John’s in Tralee in 1957.

He founded the St John’s Gregorian Choir and was given responsibility for liturgical music in the diocese. While in Tralee he produced and directed a number of liturgical pageants and was involved in the Scoraíocht movement in Comhaltas that led, in part, to the establishment of Siamsóirí na Ríochta in 1968.

The Siamsóirí pioneered a form of folk theatre that presented Irish folk customs on stage through music, song and dance.

The Bishop of Kerry decided to send the young priest to UCC to study a B.Mus degree under Professor Fleischmann, who was a great inspiration to Fr Pat. Graduating with a music degree from UCC in 1962, Fr Pat joined the Catholic Communications Centre in Dublin and studied TV and radio production.

He produced a weekly series called “Network” for RTE Radio. Recalled to Kerry in 1973, he was released from parish work to devote himself to his work on folk theatre. His musical and theatrical work in the early years was channelled into the establishment of Siamsa Tíre, the national folk theatre of Ireland.

Since then Siamsa Tire has gone from strength to strength, culminating in the opening of its new building on the edge of Tralee Town Park in 1991. Fr Pat was artistic director there until 1997.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s Fr Ahern was also involved in Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann in Kerry and at a national level.

Outside of Siamsa, Fr Pat has been responsible for numerous other productions including works on the life of Edmund Rice and the story of Christianity in Kerry. For the Millennium, he produced “Dance of Life” which featured over 800 singers and a cast of 200.

He is an accomplished fiddle player and is a former pupil of renowned dancing master, Jerry Molyneux.

We began strongly, played superbly, combined brilliantly and led by 0-11 at the break….4-7 to 1-5. Our opponents made several comeback bids in the second half but our strong and brave defenders kept us in the game by repelling many dangerous East Kerry onslaughts.

Our forwards managed to clock up vital scores, all skilfully scored from play, in the second half and took a lead that was never relinquished. Kilcummin attacked repeatedly but could not penetrate our stonewall defence and the Black’n’Amber was victorious at the end of a mighty battle.

A great but hard-fought win! We make special mention of Liam O’Connell whose hat-trick of goals proved vital to this fine victory. Final score…AdeS: 6-10; Cill Chuimín: 5-6.
