A Five-Star Opera Treat In Store At Siamsa Tíre With ‘The First Child’

.
‘The First Child’ comes to Siamsa Tíre on Sunday, September 25.

OPERA fans are in for a real treat later this month when a highly acclaimed production come to Siamsa Tíre.

Irish National Opera, in association with Landmark Productions, bring the ‘The First Child’ directed by Enda Walsh to the Tralee venue for one night only on Sunday 25 September.

‘The First Child’, is a 90-minute multi-media experience which brings together a sensational cast of opera singers, an actor, a dancer and a children’s chorus to create a work that electrifies the senses.

It wowed audiences and critics at the Dublin Theatre Festival last October and again at Galway International Arts Festival in July.

The First Child has received rave reviews. “With more twists than a corkscrew, The First Child keeps you hooked till the very dark end.  And even then you’re left thinking,” said The Arts Review. “Walsh’s satirical libretto,” wrote The Sunday Times, “takes aim at the wine o’clock Dublin suburban classes, while Dennehy’s score exquisitely tunes our emotional register to the damage of childhood trauma.”

.

Fergus Sheil, artistic director of Irish National Opera, says, “The First Child is an extraordinarily ambitious new opera.  At first glance it is a comic, feel-good opera about a new father buying a baby carrier. But nothing is quite what it seems in a work where a disturbing and grotesque story unfolds and childhood trauma plays out in devastating ways across different generations. It’s an opera with beautiful and haunting singing (including an outstanding children’s choir), dynamic playing from Crash Ensemble, engrossing video and life-or-death dancing. We are delighted to take it on tour for audiences around Ireland to get to see it first-hand.”

Tenor Dean Power, a native of Clarecastle, Co. Clare spent the last ten years working in the ensemble at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. He describes what it is like to move back home.

“Performing in Ireland, especially in theatres around the country, is the best! Opera doesn’t have to only be available in one ‘grand’ form. Opera should be like water, able to fit into any environment and be performed under any circumstances. The First Child is an incredible opera. It is stacked with melodies. Its subject, although disturbing and heart-breaking, is completely relatable, funny, moving and gripping. To me it’s just wow!

“Vocally, there are plenty of challenges performing The First Child. there are leaps which continuously catch you by surprise. Technically speaking, you have to rapidly navigate your way through your registers,” he said.

“Rhythmically, you have to make sure that the music is in your bones, as there are constant changes of time signature. The character I play, Gary, is an explosion of contradictions. He is cocky and selfish. He gets his news from social media. Because he is so extremely different to me, he is so enjoyable to play.”

“I’m really looking forward to Siamsa Tíre, it will be my first time performing in the theatre. I think people will like The First Child  because it upends your pre-conceptions about opera – because the music simultaneously slaps you in the face and embraces you. It shows you that Ireland is a thriving opera nation.”

• Tickets for The First Child are available now from www.siamsatire.com

Mary Lucey: Tips To Survive On A Tight Budget In College

.

Mary Lucey of Career Ahead has some tips ahead of a challenging year for students preparing for third level education…

This year more than ever, college students need to prioritise their needs rather than their wants in relation to spending.  Food, safe travel, electricity, phone credit – are essential in college.

Below are some tips that will help:

1. Regarding college accommodation, it may suit and be a lot less expensive to travel to/from daily or stay in a B&B/hotel for a night or two during the week based on timetables/number of online classes and college locations.

2. New college students tend to spend all their week’s budget before Wednesday and then are broke for the remainder of the week. Budget firstly for a month and then break this down to a weekly figure.  A student will then know what they can afford to spend daily and should not exceed that amount.  Closely monitor spending at beginning of the week.

Continued below…

.

3. Ensure students get hold of their student card as soon as possible and use to avail of all student discounts offered.

4. Socialising is important to help make friends, become part of the college community, and settle in better.

However, it doesn’t mean just going to costly bars and night-clubs – it can be cooking a meal, having a house party, going outdoors, etc think outside the box.

5. When travelling home; check who has cars that live nearby and offer to contribute to fuel costs for a lift.

For public transport, purchase weekly/monthly return tickets. Book train tickets in advance to avail of any discounted prices.  Download apps that allow you to accumulate points and get discounted prices.

6. Learn to cook two or three cheap and cheerful meals, a healthy meal can be made for as little as €1 if you shop wisely.  Download apps for major supermarkets and brands to see weekly offers and build up reward points.

Bring a packed lunch to college, much cheaper than college canteens. Buy and fill a travel cup with coffee/tea rather than spending at least €3 per cup at coffee/tea outlets.

Continued below…

.

7. For clothes, check out the amazing range and value available in pre-loved and charity shops – for nights out to work placement outfits – all will be covered at very little cost while benefiting charities and the environment.

8. For toiletries –– a bar of soap will do the same job as an expensive shower or bath gel. Purchase generic brands in place of overpriced branded goods.

9. If you need medical attention, most colleges have medical centre/medical personnel on-site which is free or offers reduced rates.

10. In relation to college books and notes etc maximise online availability rather than purchasing expensive books and printing off notes.

11. Students should get a part-time job – results in both financial and personal gain.

Local Journalist Details Farmer’s Stand Against Eviction In New Book

.
Writer Marisa Reidy with Seamus Sherlock. Photo: Andrea Etter

A FORMER journalist with The Kerryman has just released her first book, recounting the year-long and much-publicised stand against eviction taken by a father-of-five back in 2012.

Marisa Reidy, who worked as a news reporter with The Kerryman Newspaper for 17 years until 2016, is the author of ‘Seamus Sherlock – The Fight of My Life’, a new book which chronicles the 350-day ordeal endured by Seamus Sherlock when threatened with eviction from his West Limerick farm in 2012.

Marisa first met Tipperary man Seamus while working with The Kerryman and covered his story extensively as he stood with his children to protect their farm in Feohanagh for almost a year.

Continued below…

.

In 2021, as the 10th anniversary of the story beckoned, Seamus approached Marisa to write his book. She says it has been a truly humbling experience to chat in so much more depth with Seamus and recount exactly what he and his family went through for almost a year.

In August 2012, Seamus was left devastated when he was issued with an eviction notice, having fallen behind on mortgage repayments a few years previously.

He had lost the bog he worked following a 2008 EU directive to preserve a number of Irish bogs, resulting in almost 80% of his income being wiped out.

In a defiant stance against the bank, Seamus erected a barricade at Appletown Farm and for the next 350 days he and his five children were under 24-hour eviction notice.

Seamus and his family made national and international headlines over the course of their standoff and now, 10 years on from his ordeal and as he prepares to sell Appletown Farm, Seamus shares his account of the toll that took on both himself and his children in this new book.

“I think it’s important, after what we went through at the time – and because it’s the 10-year anniversary – that we put down on paper what really happened,” explained Seamus..

“We were the ones inside the barricade, and I was always conscious that I’d like the real story to be told. I didn’t want someone to write it from the outside, looking in. I was inside the gate with the children, and it was important to recall exactly what was happening at the time,” Seamus explained.

While Seamus has given many interviews to the press during and after his ordeal, this is the first time he has spoken so frankly and in so much detail about what he says was a year of hell on earth.

• ‘Seamus Sherlock – The Fight of My Life’ is now available online via The Book Depository https://www.bookdepository.com/Seamus-Sherlock-Marisa-Reidy/9781915662231, with several other online platforms such as Amazon, Apple Books, Google Books and Blackwell adding the title in the coming days.

MTU And HSE To Launch New Mental Health Initiative This Month

.
Co-Principal Investigator Aclú and UNESCO Chair Manager at MTU, Catherine Carty.

MUNSTER Technological University (MTU) and the HSE have joined forces to create Aclú,  a new mental health initiative.

The initiative seeks to address enduring mental illness (EMI) recovery using physical activity, nutrition and digital technology. A launch event will take place on Thursday ,September 22nd from 2.00-5.00pm at the MTU North Campus.

Sedentary behaviour and reduced physical activity in mental illness arise from many variables, including the nature of the illnesses, the medication associated with them, social isolation, poverty, stigma, and exclusion.

Aclú seeks to improve health outcomes for those living with enduring mental illnesses by increasing physical activity, reducing sedentariness, and improving nutrition with the support of digital technologies.

Commenting on Aclú, Catherine Carty, Co-Principal Investigator Aclú and UNESCO Chair Manager at MTU said; “People with Enduring Mental Illness (EMI) have a high risk of health inequality. As the gap in life expectancy for those with and without EMI issues continues to rise, this is a priority in health”.

“Focusing specifically on enduring mental illness, Aclú seeks to reframe mental health through a pioneering multi-disciplinary approach. Aclú research group aims to demonstrate national and international leadership in mental health through physical activity, nutrition, and digital technologies. Human rights and sustainable development approaches will underpin Aclú.

Our research and implementation outcomes strive to substantially impact the lifelong health and well-being of people with enduring mental illness”.

“The United Nations is clear that ‘there is no health without mental health’. Yet, EMI treatment lags behind physical health care globally and all countries have been labelled as ‘developing’ when it comes to mental health,” added Catherine.

According to Catherine, no published research highlights the effectiveness of multidisciplinary interventions that include physical activity, nutrition and digital technologies to improve the quality of life of those living with EMI.

“Aclú seeks to address this gap and reframe mental health treatment,” she said.

Anyone interested in, working in or living with Enduring Mental Illness are welcome to attend this free launch event.

The event is hybrid – both on campus and online. Book your place today at https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/aclu-empowering-recovery-in-enduring-mental-illness-onsite-and-online-tickets-350389172447 or visit www.aclu.ie or more information on Aclú.

Councillor Calls For Urgency In Relation To Feasibility Study Into Covering The Square

.
The Square.

A TRALEE councillor has called for the feasibility study relating to a canopy to cover The Square to begin as soon as possible.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Johnnie Wall made the request at the meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday. He said it started raining during the recent reception held in The Square to welcome the Roses during the festival and this highlighted the need for a canopy.

In reply, the councillor was told that Kerry County Council submitted the ‘Tralee Regeneration Project’ proposal under Call 2 of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund in June 2020 with a feasibility study into the provision of a cover to the Tralee Town Square part of this overall proposal.

As required under the Public Spending Code – Kerry County Council submitted a Preliminary Business Case in March 2022.

This business case is currently being reviewed by the Department. Kerry County Council are awaiting approval from the Department to proceed to the next project stage which will involve the development of a detailed project brief and procurement strategy.
