KERRY Local Creative Youth Partnership at Kerry ETB has announced an art exhibition in the foyer area of Kerry County Museum opening for Culture Night on September 23.
‘Inclusion’ is a temporary exhibition exploring home and homelessness, which will run with free entry from Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm until October 29th.
It features a series of painted images, sculptures and structures created by a group of young people from Kerry who worked with the homeless charity Novas and artist Jeannine Storan in 2021.
Continued below…
The project is supported and funded by Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership at Kerry ETB.
The project enabled Novas to engage creative practitioner/artist Jeannine Storan to facilitate a series of workshops which brought young people facing similar challenges together over a period of six weeks in 2021.
The group had never worked together, so exploring the central theme of home and homelessness was an issue very close to the hearts of the young people involved.
“Our aim was that in working together we would increase the sense of inclusion for our young people. A second intention in taking on this project was to facilitate a means of expressing feelings symptomatic of experiencing homelessness”, stated Ronan Doherty, Regional Manager from the charity Novas.
“The young people had a sense of shared experience that fizzled with possibilities, the exhibition reflects but a few of the results and we hope everybody enjoys seeing it”, said Jeannine Storan, Killorglin based artist and project facilitator with the group.
“The project is high on the agenda for the LCYP at Kerry ETB,” said Ann O’Dwyer, Director of Schools, Youth & Music at Kerry ETB. “It builds on our work reaching out to young people who are seldom heard but whose message is potent. Not all access is equal, and some of our children face tremendous personal challenges daily. In examining the central theme of homelessness, the group speaks to us as a nation. It has been our pleasure to help this project along and one we hope to hear more from in the future”,
The exhibition is hosted by Kerry County Museum. They are a county partner in the promotion of child and youth creativity with Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership.
The Partnership works to support child and youth creativity where access to creativity projects is most challenged in Kerry.
The show is highlighted on @kerrylcyp @jeanninestoran (Instagram handle) and on www.kerryetb.ie/creativity For more information email denright@kerryetb.ie

A FASCINATING part of Kerry’s sporting history in the form of two albums of newspaper cuttings put together in the 1950s by Gillian Mangan, younger sister of the legendary Kerry cyclist Gene Mangan, has been donated to Kerry Library.
At an event at Killorglin Library on Tuesday, Gillian donated the albums to Kerry Library who will hold them for public access in the Kerry Local History & Archives in Tralee.
Gillian’s collections begin in 1954 when Gene was 17 years old and becoming prominent in cycling circles: “I was seven years younger than Gene and he was a hero in my eyes,” said Gillian.
Continued below…
“I got all the papers and cut out anything to do with Gene and stuck them into old account books. I’m delighted that they will now be preserved of use for future generations and I’d like to thank the library for hosting them,” she added.
Gene became a national sporting sensation in 1955 by winning the Rás Tailteann at the age of 18. Apart from documenting Gene’s early career, the albums also record the glory-days of Kerry cycling in the 1950s and 60s that also include Paudie Fitzgerald’s Rás win in 1956 and Mick Murphy’s in 1958, as well as the all-important Kerry team wins.
A large collection of newspaper cuttings relating to Kerry cycling kept by the Mangan family has also been donated.
In addition, they also include cuttings and pictures of ordinary club races and riders and they are highly evocative in giving a wonderful sense of the cycling scene and the people involved in Kerry at the time.
Continued below…
Speaking on behalf of the library, Kerry County Librarian, Tommy O’Connor, thanked Gillian for her donation which will be preserved in a public archive for the use of future generations and he noted that it will supplement the very scarce copy of Gene’s biography that Kerry Library holds – ‘The Gene Mangan Story’ which was written by Seán O’Neill and was published in 1959.
The event was also attended by Mary Concannon, a representative of Killorglin Cycling Club and she also paid tribute to Gene.
“Gene left Kerry in the 1950s for work and eventually settled in Dublin but he has had a life-long loyalty to Kerry cycling and in particular to his original club in Killorglin. He has always been a wonderful supporter and has contributed to Killorglin and Kerry cycling in numerous ways down through the years. We would like to thank Gillian for this donation – it will be highly interesting for everyone with an interest in our sporting heritage and an important part of the town’s history.”
Also in attendance was Tom Daly from Killarney who is Vice-President of Cycling Ireland. Tom said that Gene was a significant figure in the history of Irish cycling from both a racing and administration point of view – he was also President of the National Cycling Association for a period and also noted that ‘Gene has previously donated important material related to the history of Irish Cycling to the Irish Cycling Archive at the UCD Archives but it is entirely appropriate that this material, related to his Kerry roots, should stay in Kerry’.
The albums and related collection of newspaper cuttings can be viewed at Killorglin library during September and thereafter in the Kerry Local History & Archives at Library Headquarters in Tralee.
THE Jack and Jill Foundation is hoping Kerry people will climb or walk a local hill in October in solidarity with the eleven Kerry families currently under its care, as part of the eighth annual ‘Up the Hill for Jack and Jill’ fundraising challenge.
Jack and Jill has provided support to 76 Kerry families since it was first established 25 years ago and Jack and Jill Liaison Nurse Manager for Kerry, Siobhan Reen, says every parent needs a break.
“It’s a privilege to be a part of the lives of Jack and Jill families. These are ordinary parents facing the extraordinary care needs of a child with a complex medical condition; a child who may not be able to walk or talk, who may be tube-fed or oxygen-dependent, requiring intensive, around-the-clock care, at home. But everyone needs a break, and that’s where we come in, literally, into the home, to give them relief and we are very proud to walk this care journey with them.”
Continued below…
There are three simple steps to ‘Go Up the Hill for Jack and Jill’. Step 1 – Register today for just €18 per person at JackandJill.ie, which will support one hour of specialist in-home nursing care for a local Jack and Jill family. Your pack will include a colourful, eco-friendly, Up the Hill banner
Step 2 – Choose your Hill. There’s a local hill around the corner to suit your fitness level and ability, and whether you go high or go low, it’s the taking part that keeps Jack and Jill on the go!
Step 3 – Grab some friends, family, neighbours or colleagues, pick a date that suits and make it a day out to remember. Bring a picnic to celebrate when you get to the top and remember to take a photo with your Up the Hill banner and tag Jack and Jill on social media with #UptheHill22 so everyone can see you!
This is a significant year for the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation, as it celebrates 25 years of funding and providing specialist in-home nursing care and respite support for children with severe to profound neurodevelopmental delay, up to the age of six.
This includes children who may have a brain injury, cerebral palsy, a genetic diagnosis or other undiagnosed condition. Another key part of the service is end-of-life care at home for all children up to the age of six who require it, irrespective of diagnosis.
Jack and Jill’s funding model relies heavily on public donations to mobilise over 500 nurses and carers at community level and, in 2021, they delivered almost 110,000 hours of in-home nursing care and respite support.
For more information on Up the Hill for Jack and Jill 2022, visit www.jackandjill.ie or telephone Jack and Jill at 045 894538.
