Austin Stacks GAA Club News

CLUB AGM: A sizeable membership at our Senior Club AGM, held on Sunday last (15th Jan), saw most of our current ‘Top Table’ continue for the coming season. A brilliant Report by Club Secretary, Siobhán Power, was circulated to members as they arrived. Club Chairman, Shane Lynch’s comprehensive address outlined the main events of 2022 and gave a detailed perspective on what’s lined up for the coming season.

Orlaith Griffin takes over as Children’s Officer while Carmel O’Neill moves to the Irish Language and Culture position.

And then towards the end of the Meeting there was widespread welcome for Aidan O’Connor who was formally elected Club President in succession to the late Brendan Dowling.

Aidan was, and still is, synonymous with the C Team which he continues to manage and he was also Club Chairman for a five year period (2011-2015) in between Ger Reidy and Liam Lynch. .

At Juvenile level there were some changes too with Ritchie Conway elected Chairman and Tim McMahon, who had held that position for the past 15 years, moving to the position of Club Coaching Officer.

WELL DONE: to Rathmore and Fossa on their respective Intermediate and Junior All Ireland wins last Sunday. It’s the fifth year now, since the competitions were revamped in 2004, that Kerry Clubs have won both Finals in the same year. St. Michaels Foilmore and Skellig Rangers were the first to do it in 2009.Then Ardfert and Brosna did it in 2015. The following year St. Marys and Templenoe did it and in 2019 Kilcummin and Beaufort were the winners.

ONLINE CLUB SHOP: A reminder that our Club shop is open 24/7. Check out the newest ‘official’ Austin Stacks Club Merchandise – only available to order on this link (free delivery on any orders over €50) see www.oneills.com.

Review of our U16/U17 and U18 girls 2022 season: The U16 girls had a tough start to the Div 3 County League with defeat by a point to Castlegregory/Annascual, followed by another loss against Kilcummin but in both games there were signs of improvement. We won our next 2 games and scraped into the semi-final v Churchill which we won in extra time.

We played Kilcummin in the final and we enjoyed an emphatic win. We carried on with winning the North Kerry Div 3 League and finished joint top in the Tralee Town League as well.

Our U17 Girls played a very exciting and tight game against Ballyduff in the Championship semi-final. The game went to 2 rounds of extra time but unfortunately we lost by 1 point in the end. The U18 girls had only a few games to play as there is very little competition for this age group but they performed well in those games. We lost in the Div 2 County League semi-final.

THE 21st series of the acclaimed Laochra Gael series on TG4 returns later this month and will feature the story of former Kerry footballer, Aidan O’Mahony.

The programme tells how Aidan overcame chronic health problems in his youth to take his place on one of the greatest Kerry teams of all time.

Killarney Man Is The Latest Kerry FC Signing

.
Ryan Kelliher has signed for Kerry FC.

KILLARNEY man Ryan Kelliher has signed for Kerry FC ahead of the 2023 SSE Airtricity First Division campaign. Kelliher, who is 21 years of age and plays as a striker, makes the move from local side Killarney Celtic.

In their recent run of form in the Kerry District League, Ryan has been an integral cog in the machine for the Killarney side. Ryan played a starring role for the club underage and made some strong appearances for his school, St Brendan’s College.

But Kelliher is no stranger to the Kerry FC jersey, having lined out in the past for Kerry at under 19 level in the EA Sports League of Ireland. In his time with Kerry, he was one of the top scorers in League of Ireland during his time at Kerry FC.

Continued below…

.

Ryan, along with Nathan Gleeson and Cian Brosnan, are under scholarship with the MTU Kerry campus.

Speaking on his signing, Kelliher said; “I’m really excited for the challenge, I played League of Ireland at under 19 level before with Kerry FC but now it’s time to challenge myself at senior level and I’m really looking forward to it”

First Team Manager Billy Dennehy said; “Ryan is a player who came into the League of Ireland underage structures later in his development but has always done really well at club level with Killarney Celtic FC.”

“Ryan has a great attitude and he finished as one of the top scorers in the country two years ago when he was part of the Kerry LOI Under 19 group. I’m looking forward to seeing Ryan step up to this challenge and score goals at this level – which he is well capable of doing.”

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.
.

William Harmon and his management team of Johnno Connor, Paul Ryan, Daniel Murphy and Daniel Breen have decided to step down following three years in charge in Strand Road.

Chairman Haulie Kerins extended his deep gratitude to the team for their efforts which saw the senior team contest four finals in that 3 year period – the county league final & senior county championship final in 2021, plus the senior club final and Munster final in 2022.

Haulie continued “this management team worked tirelessly to bring silverware to Strand Road, and were most unlucky in 2021 when having reached our first senior county final in 13 years, we were unfortunate with injuries and were not able to give of our best on the day.

The management team targeted this year’s senior club championship and were duly rewarded when overcoming Templenoe in the final – this was due reward for their efforts and brought much joy to the club.

However, they were not happy to rest on their laurels which resulted in that never to be forgotten Munster final win in Mallow vs Newcastlewest which saw us crowned Munster champions for the first time in the club’s history.

The defeat last weekend vs Kilmacud again saw a well prepared, disciplined plan executed to perfection before we bowed out by 3 points. The pride, joy and delight experienced by all present when our club took to the pitch will live long in the memory and will never be forgotten.

The players, supporters and entire community in Strand Road will be sorry to see this team go but they have given of their best, sent out a team in the best traditions of Strand Road & Kerry football and have blooded young players who hopefully will be stars in the future.

A special mention must be made of our own club man Frank O’Connor ( Tiler) who assisted the management throughout their tenure.

We would like to wish the team all the best in their future endeavours and assure them that they will always be welcome in Strand Road where they are held in the highest esteem.”

Reports from Coiste NÓg Agm

Over next few weeks I will include the various reports

U5 BOYS & GIRLS The second year of this age group as part of our Academy was another success. Attendance each week ranged from 10-20 children, with a total of 36 children regularly participating.

At most sessions, more girls than boys were in attendance, especially among the younger ages. This year we have made a switch to more games-based skills learning with the initial coaching and support from Tom Joy, GDA.

This approach has proven very popular with the players and there is a noticeable difference in levels of engagement across all ages and experience when games, props and equipment are well incorporated into training sessions (warm-up, individual stations, and collective play to end).

All coaches are keen to see this approach continued next year and investigate how we can increase parent/guardian participation in these games to extend learning from the pitch to home.

The increase in number of coaches available for this age group this year (seven in total) has facilitated splitting children into groups based on ability.

This approach permitted the stronger players to collectively progress to learning more technical skills as befits this age grouping (e.g., solo, pick-up, mini matches) and prepares them for moving up the age groupings next year.

We are confident that our graduating players will do well at the U7 level next year. The greatest benefit of this approach was to the younger or newer players who were split into smaller groups to learn basic skills in a more comfortable environment, at a group directed pace and with a smaller coach to player ratio.

This approach supports retention and lays solid foundations and confidence in these players that can be built upon next year. 5 Our utmost thanks to our coaches this year for their enthusiasm and dedication to the skills development of this age group.

Thanks to the guardians and parents for bringing the children each week. And finally thank you to our players – we wish the best of luck to our graduating players in the U7s and for our returning players, we look forward to more fun and games in March 2023.

Message from Children’s Officer

For all new and existing coaches, many thanks for volunteering your time for the underage of our club, there are a few things we need to have in order as the season begins

Everyone need an up-to-date garda vetting certificate- this is done by logging into Foireann needs updating every 3 years
A child protection course which needs to be done every 3 yrs
A level 1 coaching course
I can help with getting these sorted just ask, it is of utmost importance that no one coaches until these are done.

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors remain in the hunt for a Super League playoff place as they secured their second home win of the season with an eight point win over Cup finalists DBS Éanna at the Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night.

The Warriors were full value for their win with a much improved performance, leading throughout before capturing the priceless League points on offer in front of a huge home crowd.

They got off to the best possible start with Eoin Quigley opening the scoring before a hat trick of scores from Dre Jackson and a brace from Matija Jokic forced Éanna coach Darren McGovern to call an early time out.

Continued below…

.

Neil Lynch hit a couple of trademark threes to bring the visitors back into the game and Josh Wilson, Stefan Desnica and Romonn Nelson kept them in touch but Quigley and Jokic were again on the mark and when Daniel Jokubaitis hit a stunning three pointer the Warriors led 20-14 at quarter time.

The Warriors moved further ahead early in the second with a combination of scores from either side of the arc from Kieran Donaghy, Jokic and another couple of major efforts from Jokubaitis pushing the hosts out to lead by 15.

Two major scores for Éanna from Wilson and another from Lynch narrowed the Warriors lead but a brave drive to the board from Donaghy rounded out a very impressive quarter from the Tralee side who led 40-31 at the long break.

 Continued below…

.

The Warriors advantage was all but wiped out early in the third with Lynch and Wilson in range from distance and Mark Reynolds and Desnica following up with scores from inside but a big three each from Jokubaitis and Jokic saw the Warriors push out to a 48-43 lead midway through the quarter.

Jackson and Quigley combined to maintain their advantage but when Kristian Andabaka hit a three and Reynolds was again on the mark the gap was down to a single point.

However the Warriors finished the quarter in style with Jackson weaving a path to the Éanna board and Aivaras Ousis hitting the score of the game with a stunning alley-oop after being teed up by a no look pass from Jokubaitis to the hosts take a 58-51 lead into the final quarter.

A cracking three pointer from Kieran Donaghy got the Warriors off to a flying start in the fourth and when Fergal O’Sullivan followed his lead the lead was out to seven.

Dre Jackson put the finishing touches to his MVP performance with another hat trick of scores as he stepped and slalomed his way to the Éanna board as he pleased.

The Warriors hit the five foul mark allowing Éanna to chip away at the lead late on and Reynolds, Dolenko and Conor Dikcius taking full advantage with free throws but it was fittingly left to Jackson to hit four from four from the line to see out the crucial win for the Warriors by 74-66 in the end.

Scorers: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Dre Jackson 24, Matija Jokic 15, Daniel Jokubaitis 14

DBS Éanna: Mark Reynolds 18, Neil Lynch 12, Romonn Nelson 10

• The Warriors have next weekend off as the National Cup finals take precedence but they will need to be at their very best as they take the tough trip to face Emporium Cork Basketball in Ballincollig Community School on Saturday 28th January with tip off at 4.00pm.
