MTU and Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance parnter in new €1.2m EU Regenerative Tourism project

Eighty small businesses in five countries are to be chosen for a new project led by Munster Technological University (MTU) that will help address tourism’s impact on local environments and communities while also promoting a more regenerative model for the industry. ‘Regenerative Tourism’ seeks to ensure that the industry impacts positively on a destination’s community and environment.

The tourism team at MTU has received an EU grant of approx. €1.2 million to lead the ‘Circular Economy 4 Regenerative Tourism’ project, under which the university will be the Irish lead partner with other partners in Finland, Iceland, Poland and the Netherlands. The overall objective of the grant is to support Tourism SMEs across the partnership in improving carbon footprint and achieving sustainability certification and will run from January 2023 for 25 months. MTU will work closely with tourism authorities in each country to share best practice and contribute to their respective national sustainable tourism agendas.

Project leaders will work closely with SMEs in all five countries to help them assess their current level of performance and subsequently build on this through practically based training, mentoring, networking and peer support systems. Participants who reach certain targets will additionally be supported through an appropriate sustainability certification process. This opportunity presents SMEs with a unique chance to make a more positive impact on their community and environment, network with a range of other SMEs and stakeholders throughout Europe and gain a competitive edge in an increasingly conscious marketplace.

According to MaryRose Stafford, the Head of Business, Computing and Humanities at MTU, achieving the standards required for sustainable and regenerative tourism is clearly a huge task for SMEs - and each stakeholder must contribute in order to share the burden and increase the chances of success. We will work with tourism SMEs, communities and visitors to first understand the impact visitors have on the community and also to introduce some regenerative measures to actually contribute positively to the community and the environment. This will be a real opportunity for leaders and learners in regenerative tourism to share their experience and learn from each other with the support of EU funding to participate in the project.

Community-based Tourism Destination Management Organisation, Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne, Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance and Regenerative Tourism advocate, Tina O’ Dwyer of Clare-based The Tourism Space will assist MTU to deliver the project and to ensure the training provided will meet the needs of the sector.

Caroline Boland, Sustainable Tourism Development Advisor with Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne, Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance, believes “this programme is timely as the tourism industry recovers post Covid-19, to ensure that the impacts of tourism positively supports our local communities and family run businesses, our pristine environment, landscape, and cultural heritage of the Dingle Peninsula. Through this collaborative regenerative programme a model can be created from which other destinations can benefit and we are delighted to be partnering with MTU and the four international destinations involved. “Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine”.

Tina O’Dwyer, CEO of The Tourism Space™ said “We are delighted to partner with MTU and other international partners on this programme. We are committed to collaboration and believe deeply in tourism’s ability to create a better future for local communities, their places and of course their visitors. This programme will allow us to co-develop bespoke training tools that will help tourism businesses implement regenerative approaches in their operations and in their community. It is a great opportunity.”

MTU President Maggie Cusack commented
'MTU acknowledges the vast scale of current environmental challenges and aspires to be a leader in sustainability regionally, nationally and internationally through education and research. This project will bring about a sustainable and fundamental change in behaviour and influence a best practice culture in the Tourism sector’.

The two year project will end in February 2025 with a hybrid international regenerative tourism conference in MTU to disseminate project findings and share international best practice from the participating Tourism SMEs.

This project is funded under the EU programme for the Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises
