MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 3-11; Ardfert 3-8.

After a three points win (1-9 to 1-6) in the opening round against Ballymac our Minors had a similar winning margin in round 2 of the Tralee/St. Brendans League, played in Caherslee on last Saturday (11th Feb). The sides were level on four points each at the end of the first quarter with Cormac Bastible on target twice (his first from a free inside the first minute) and one each from play by David Lucid and Alex Tuohy. Ardfert just shaded the second quarter scoring a goal and two points to a goal and a point for our boys – our point coming from another Cormac Bastible free and a well-taken goal by Oliver Lata following good work by Thomas Deregee (1-6 to1-5 at half time in favour of Ardfert).

We had a brilliant start to the second half, scoring a goal and four points without reply inside the opening eleven minutes. Alex Tuohy was our goal scorer just after the throw-in and all our four points coming from Cormac Bastible – three of them from frees. This left us ahead by two clear goals at that stage (2-9 to 1-6).

But in the space of three minutes – the 44th and 47th – Ardfert had wiped out that lead with two well-taken goals. Then in the 49th minute Cormac was again on target for our third goal of the game and that was the difference between the sides at the final whistle with both sides scoring a further two points each in the closing minutes – ours by Tomás O’Connell and Cormac Bastible to bring his tally to a whopping 1-8 for the afternoon.

Team: Steven Conway, James Fisher (Capt), Pádraig O’Halloran, Tomás O’Connell (0-1), Alex Tuohy (1-1), Seán Heaslip, Ciarán Kavanagh, David Lucid (0-1), Fionán Ryan, Jack Barrett, Thomas Deregee, Liam O’Connell, Cormac Bastible (1-8 – six frees), Oliver Lata (1-0), Ryan McMahon.

Subs used: Rory Lynch, Max Maszorek, Jake O’Connor, Bao Foley.

The date for the 3rd and final round at home to St. Pats/O’Rahillys has yet to be confirmed as we write. In the meantime  the Co. League gets underway next weekend. We are due to play Killarney Legion in Connolly Park on Saturday (18th Feb) at 3pm.

SENIOR FOOTBALL; Austin Stacks 1-22 (25); Na Gaeil 2-6 (12):

Like our Minors a few weeks ago our Seniors also opened their three-round Tralee/St/ Brendans League with a winning start in Connolly on last Sunday afternoon (12th Feb).

Seán Quilter won the throw-in and raced up-field to score the opening point after jus ten seconds. Na Gaeil responded quickly with their opener a minute later.

Photo: Adrienne McLoughlin

We then added six more points to two for the opposition by the end of the first quarter to leave us ahead at that stage by four points (0-7 to 0-3). We had an even better second quarter adding a further eight points to one for the visitors to give us an eleven points lead at half time (0-15 to 0-4).

Na Gaeil started the second half with two very well-taken goals inside the opening four minutes to reduce the deficit to just five points.

Photo: Adrienne McLoughlin

But a brilliant goal by Seán Quilter a minute later got us back on the road to victory and we were never in danger after that. With Billy Lee and colleagues using the bench we went on to dominate again with nine of our starting 15 getting on the score sheet during the course of the hour.

Photo: Adrienne McLoughlin

Our two remaining games are now away – to John Mitchels next Sunday (19th Feb) and Ardfert the following Sunday (26th Feb), both with 12 noon start.

Team: Ben Quilter, Luke Chester, Barry Walsh, Ruairí O’Connell, Ronan Shanahan, Ciarán O’Connell, Eoghan Carroll (0-1), Michael O’Donnell (0-1 free), Seán Quilter (1-4 – 3 frees), Seán Ryan (0-1), Adam Curran (0-1), Shane Bastible (0-2), Donagh McKivergan (0-7), Shane O’Callaghan (0-3), Conor Myers (0-2).

Subs used: Jack Murphy, Shane Carroll, Dean Rusk, John Murphy, Noah Townsend, Greg Scanlon, Dean Scanlon.

Great to see two former Rockies very much involved in the occasion – Billy Dennehy and James Sugrue.

New Buses At St Mary Of The Angels

.
Welcoming new buses added to the fleet at St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort are from left: Sheila Marie Fitzgerald, Director of Nursing St John of God; Killian O’Dowd, Transforming Lives Project Co-ordinator; Eoghan McCrohan, Social & Rec instructor; Kelly Burke, Social & Rec instructor; Emil Ronthaler, resident; David Lyons, Social & Rec instructor; Piaras Leahy, Social & Rec instructor; Sandra Farell, Social & Rec instructor; Patrice O’Neill, Interim Disability Manager Cork Kerry Community Healthcare and Majella Daly, Head of Disability Services Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. Photo By : Domnick Walsh © Eye Focus LTD

NEW buses are allowing residents of St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort access the local community more regularly.

From horse riding and hairdressing appointments, to library visits and sports, more transport means more regular activities beyond their home.

Skills teaching plays a big role in each of the community outings. The importance of road safety, the use of traffic lights, how to choose from a menu, or pay for an item in a shop – these are all independent skills people can practise and achieve in the community.

Continued below…

.

St Mary of the Angels was initially funded for one wheelchair accessible bus but it soon became apparent that with more transport, more residents could access activities outside of the campus.

There are now three buses, which allows the Social and Recreational Service team to carry out leisure sampling activities for each of the residents.

The additional transport affords the freedom to go on faraway day trips without clock-watching to get the bus back.

The team have also been able to facilitate and commit to weekly community activities such as gym sessions, swimming at the community pool, beautician appointments, personal shopping, meals out and many more. Each outing is tailored to the wants and goals of the person.

The extra transport also supports the residents to go further afield for overnight trips. One resident, Tomas, went to Cork City for the night, visited Fota Wildlife Park, did some shopping and took in a movie and dinner.

Previously, with only one bus, the other people that live with Tomas would have been house-bound for two days to allow this trip to happen.

Another resident, Reece, is supported by the Social and Recreational Service to attend the gym in Killarney each week for his personal training session with coaches, Connor and Stephen.

Not only have these gym sessions contributed to his health, Reece has built a great rapport with his coaches and the other staff. He is known by name by the regulars that train at the same time as him.

These are just two examples of the many experiences that each individual now has, made possible by the new buses and the Social and Recreational Service.

Goals for 2023 include numerous overnights for many residents, as well as community art classes and day trips.

HSE Cork Kerry Disability Services welcomed the allocation of Once Off National Funding that allowed for these new buses: “This funding has allowed us to update aged vehicles across a number of agencies in Cork and Kerry. St John of God Services received funding to purchase two extra vehicles for their Day and Residential Services and what a difference it has made,” said Majella Daly, Head of Disability Services, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare.

“You can see how much it has enhanced the lives of the residents. It gives them so much freedom and independence, as well as opening up a whole world of activities that adds meaning to their day. They get to meet new people, plan days out and integrate more into their local community. It’s fantastic to see how the new buses have helped to change and improve lives,” she said.

While acknowledging the help and support the club has received from Kerry GAA in using Caherslee over the last 10 years, he said that the priority for Tralee Parnells over the next 10 years and beyond was to now find a home of its own which would require dedication not to mention a strong fundraising effort.

A special surprise presentation was made by Stephen Buttimer to David Brick for his dedication to the club since its launch in 2012 for which he received a standing ovation.

Tralee Parnells Juvenile Secretary David Brick receiving a special award for dedication to the club by Chairperson Stephen Buttimer at the inaugural social evening

The speeches were concluded by Juvenile Chairman, Dermot Reen who reflected on all that had gone before and how we have all been privileged to be involved in spreading the hurling gospel to everyone in the club and how it was incumbent on everyone in Kerry to fight for hurling to be played across the county, not just in Tralee and North Kerry. He was especially looking forward to attending the 20th, 30th and 40th anniversaries of the club, he said.

On Dermot’s prompting, everyone sang Happy Birthday to the club, before Big Jim kicked off the disco and everyone danced the night away.

The club want to say a big thank you to Eamon Costello Kerry LTD who kindly sponsored the event.

Registration 2023

Now that some of our teams have resumed training and others will be resuming shortly players and coaches, please register your membership of the Club for 2023.

One of the benefits of registering as a playing member of the GAA or LGFA via the Club is that in the event of an injury sustained playing or training resulting in medical expenses it may be possible to claim a level of refund from the GAA or LGFA Injury Benefit Fund.

However, any player seeking to benefit from the Injury Benefit Fund must be a registered member of the GAA or LGFA on Foireann at the time of injury.

The respective Injury Benefit Funds are self-funded entirely from the GAA and LGFA funds with no outside involvement.

The Injury Funds are not an insurance scheme. The Injury Funds are set up to assist members with some reimbursement for medical expenses incurred due to an injury sustained playing Gaelic football.

The respective Injury Benefit Funds do not seek to compensate fully for injuries sustained but to supplement other Schemes such as Personal Accident or Health Insurance.

The GAA and LGFA Schemes only provide cover for unrecoverable losses up to the limits specified under the respective Schemes. More details can be viewed onhttps://learning.gaa.ie/InjuryFund or https://ladiesgaelic.ie/resources/injury-fund/

A Foireann mobile app is now available, and this is the only official membership and communications app for GAA, LGFA & Camogie clubs. The app is available for both iOS (via the Apple Store) and Android devices (via Google Play).

The Foireann membership and communications app is fully integrated with the Foireann membership system – members can log in on the app with their existing Foireann account to see upcoming events which includes event details for anyone in your Family.

.
Aaron O’Sullivan who has signed for Kerry FC.

KERRY FC has announced the signing of Kevin Williams and Aaron O’Sullivan ahead of the 2023 SSE Airtricity First Division campaign which gets underway this Friday.

Kevin Williams is a 22-year-old Centre Back with a wide variety of experience in the game. He played for the Kerry FC Academy at under 17 and 19 levels. From Kerry FC he signed for Cork City and lined up with the sides under 19 squad.

From Cork, Williams made the move to Cobh Ramblers where he played in the SSE Airtricity First Division.

Kevin made the move to Germany in 2021 where he played for Inter Leipzig and most recently with FSV Union Fürstenwalde in the Oberliga. Kevin can also slot into the Right Back position when needed.

Aaron O’Sullivan, who is 19 years of age, has graduated from the Kerry FC Academy where he has played under 19 League of Ireland football for the last two seasons.

Previous to that, Aaron played for Killarney Athletic from a young age. O’Sullivan now completes the goalkeeper line-up ahead of the new season, joining both Wayne Guthrie and Callan Scully in the club’s shot-stopper options for the season ahead.

Speaking on his announcement, Kevin Williams said; “Yeah It’s simple I’m looking forward to playing in this league especially with Kerry as it’s where I’ve grown up playing football in my youth career. It is exciting times as I get to show what I can do as a footballer and what this team and county can achieve together.”

Speaking on his signing for Kerry Football Club, Aaron said “To sign for Kerry FC is something that I’m very proud of as I get to represent where I’m from. It’s something that I’ve been excited about and working hard towards for a long time. To team up with Wayne and Callan is a huge experience for me and I can’t wait for the season to kick off”.

First-Team manager Billy Dennehy said; “Kevin is another player who has played his grassroots football in Kerry. He is a player who had to travel far and wide to try and progress in the game and to try and play at a decent level.

Kevin was always a player who always reached out to me whenever he was home from other clubs or during the off-season to come in and train with us and be part of the Kerry FC setup. From there, I always knew he had a strong attitude and appetite to represent our club.

Once this project was announced, Kevin was moving home back to Ireland, so the timing was really suitable for this club to be in place. Kevin is at the stage of his career where he can really make a big impact on the league through the experience he has from other leagues and clubs and I’m looking forward to him bringing that experience into the squad here and not only developing himself but a lot of other players too”.

On Aaron O’Sullivan, Billy said; “Aaron is a goalkeeper who has been in the academy with us for the last couple of years. He is a young goalkeeper with great attributes for the position. But like all young players he has room for improvement. He has a great attitude and good determination in training and I have no doubt he will develop in the coming years ahead”.

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors secured their fourth win in a row on Saturday night as they comfortably accounted for EJ Sligo All-Stars at the Tralee Sport Complex.

The Warriors led at the end of all four quarters and after dominating the opening half against the Sligo side on their first visit to Tralee and eased their way to another important win ahead of two more home games against Moycullen next Saturday and Killester the week after.

The Warriors took the initiative from the very start and opened with three three-point scores in a row from Daniel Jokubaitis with two and Dre Jackson and by the time Eoin Quigley and Matija Jokic chipped in with a score apiece the lead was out to 13-5 forcing Sligo coach Shane O’Meara to call an early timeout.

The brief pause did nothing to stem the Warriors onslaught and when Quigley added a double and Jokubaitis hit his third major of the quarter the gap was out to 22-5.

Tom Child, Jamie Hayes and Sean Snee added some respectability to the scoreline but a Fergal O’Sullivan three and a floated effort from Rich Dunham saw the hosts lead 27-12 at the end of the first.

Jokic and Dunham were on the mark for Warriors early in the second but Sligo began to find their range and when Christian William, Cam King, Hayes and Snee added the sizable lead was cut to 31-23.

Jokic continued to torment the Sligo defence and after adding a double Dre Jackson lit up to add four scores either side of a Jokubaitis alley-oop courtesy of Quigley and despite back to back threes from Oisin O’Reilly took a commanding 46-31 lead to the long break.

The Warriors maintained their half-time advantage in the third despite Williams and King hitting an early double each, Jokic, Jackson and Donaghy countered the scores at the other end.

Jokubaitis and Donaghy added to restore the Warriors half-time advantage but scores from inside and out from Tom Child and another from Hayes kept Sligo just about in touch.

However with the visitors in foul trouble Jokic and O’Sullivan took their chances from the line either side of another Jokubaitis effort from inside and the Warriors took an unassailable 20 point lead into the final quarter.

Matija Jokic took flight in the fourth quarter and four quality scores in a row capped his MVP performance.

However Sligo to the credit chipped away at the Warriors advantage through Snee, Hayes, O’Reilly and Williams and had the lead down to 73-61 midway through the quarter.

Dre Jackson stepped and slalomed his way to a hat trick of scores late on but the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Aaron Fleming who hit a cracking three in the final minute that has the Warriors fans on their feet as it sealed a comfortable 84-67 win that keeps the Warriors Super League flame alight for another week at least.
