MUNSTER Technological University’s (MTU) Green Campus in Tralee hosted a successful wellbeing event on Thursday last featuring a cookery demonstration on plant-based meals.
The event, which was attended by MTU staff and students, aimed to highlight the benefits of plant-based meals for both personal health and the environment.
Dan Browne, Culinary Arts lecturer and chef, led the demonstration showing attendees how to prepare a delicious and nutritious chickpea curry.

The dish, designed to be easy to cook during busy exam times, was very well received by all. After the demonstration, attendees enjoyed lunch together prepared by Compass Group Ireland.
Commenting on the event, Martha Farrell, Green Campus Chairperson said, “We are delighted with the positive response to our plant-based cookery demo. Promoting sustainability is at the core of our mission and we hope this encourages more people to consider swapping to a plant-based meal at least once a week for the benefit of their own health as well as the environment.”
“We are very grateful to chef Dan Browne for the fantastic demonstration, TJ O’Connor, Section Head of the Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Department for facilitating this event, Compass Group Ireland for preparing the delicious lunch, and REEdI for funding this event. It’s through the combined efforts of everyone involved that we were able to make this event a success”.
Katherine O’Sullivan, Lecturer on the Rethinking Engineering Education in Ireland Programme (REEdI) added; “The REEdI@MTU Team is thrilled to support the Green Campus cookery demo and lunch. The event featured a culinary demonstration followed by a delicious meal crafted from locally sourced, seasonal produce whilst promoting health and well-being amongst students and staff.
“It is a fantastic collaboration spanning departments and disciplines, providing a refreshing break for our busy students in the lead-up to exam time. As there is a strong emphasis on sustainability within the REEdI project, this Green Campus initiative clearly aligns to the REEdI project vision”.
This event is just one of many initiatives Green Campus undertakes to promote a sustainable and healthy campus environment at MTU.
David Moriarty reports on Kerry’s FC’s game against Longford Town on Monday evening…
LONGFORD TOWN 2-1 KERRY FC
Kerry FC had a quick turnaround from Friday’s Cork City clash as they headed to Bishopsgate on the Bank Holiday Monday to take on Longford Town.
It was against the same opposition that Kerry managed to pick up their first-ever home league win at the start of last month but since then things have not been going according to plan as they have only picked up one point in the last four games.
Defeats against Bray Wanderers, Athlone Town and Cork City make their eight-game unbeaten run seem like an eternity ago and the Kingdom were desperate to get more points on the board against a Longford Town side who have yet to win a game this season.
Continued below…
It has been a tough hundredth year for Longford as former manager Stephen Henderson resigned after a run of poor results to begin the season and although they have been playing better in recent weeks, they still have not picked up a win in the 2024 campaign.
First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy made a few changes from last Friday’s defeat against Cork with Evison Rramani and Jack Kavanagh making their first starts in Longford. Victor Udeze and Kennedy Amechi came back into the front three with Ethan Kos replacing captain Andy Spain who picked up an injury against Cork City on Friday.
The opening fifteen minutes or so were even enough with neither team doing very little to test each other.
But that changed when Longford took the lead just after the 20-minute mark. A corner taken on the left side was swung in by Conor Crowley and went all the way to Luke Wade Slater at the back post who managed to nudge the ball further into Francis Campbell who headed in from close range.
There were a few shouts for a foul on Kerry FC defender Ethan Kos, but on closer inspection, it was evident there was little to no contact and the goal stood.
Things only went from bad to worse for Kerry just six minutes later when Longford doubled their lead from another corner on the left side.
Conor Crowley’s cross went all the way through to Luke Wade Slater at the back post whose diving header was enough to get it past Antonio Tuta.
Conor McCarthy felt the need for change and made two changes soon after with Ryan Kelliher and Daniel Okwute coming on to try and salvage something from the game.
Dean O’Shea could have made it three as he got on the end of another corner, but his bullet header was not kept down and was always heading over the crossbar.
Kerry FC’s first sight of goal came just seven minutes before half time as Jack Kavanagh got a second bite of the cherry from a blocked corner and put the ball into the box but Ryan Kelliher could not direct the ball towards goal as it rolled out for a goal kick.
Samuel Aladesanusi was called into defensive action as a last-stitched tackle kept out further Longford danger and soon thereafter the whistle was blown to signal the end of the first half.
A disappointing performance in the first forty-five that the players and management wanted to get right in the second half.
Kerry FC completed the rest of their five substitutions just fifty-six minutes into the game as Steven Healy, Sean O’Connell and Valerii Dolia came into the fold. Dolia was making his highly anticipated first-team debut after playing half an hour in an under 20’s game last week.
Dolia had been out with a broken toe since signing for the club at the start of the season, so he was itching to get out on the pitch at this stage.
Evison Rramani tried an effort from well outside the box although it was ambitious, it was struck well and did not go that far over the bar.
Longford played around the ball much like the end of the first half but did not create any chances in that time as they seemed to take their foot off the gas ever so slightly.
In the seventy-second minute, Kerry got a goal back through an unbelievable Ryan Kelliher acrobatic finish.
Evison Rramani played the ball out to Daniel Okwute who crossed the ball in for Kelliher. A deflection meant that it was hard for Kelliher to control but he popped the ball up with his knee and bicycle kicked it into the back of the net giving Jack Brady no chance whatsoever.
Kerry FC pushed on but created nothing of note to test the Longford keeper. Time started to run out for Kerry and the whistle eventually blew for full-time as Longford Town picked up their first three points of the season.
Kerry are back at home on Friday when they take on UCD as the Kingdom will look to get points on the board once more this season

PUPILS in St John’s Parochial School on Ashe Street, Tralee are “desperate to make the most of their play areas” but there is no Government funding available to bring the “children’s dreams to fruition”.
The children, their parents and staff are planning the school’s second annual fun run in Tralee Town Park on Sunday 19th May to help fund school yard and play space upgrades.
The Principal of St John’s Parochial School, Mike O’Toole, said: “Our numbers have doubled in recent years – from 38 to 75 students and from two to four teachers – since 2022. The play spaces have become more crowded and we would love to make these areas as productive and play friendly as possible.
Continued below…
“Astro Pitches and Playgrounds cost up to €20,000 and €45,000 respectively and proceeds from this year’s fun run will go towards our Yard Rejuvenation Fund. Unfortunately, and despite being a DEIS school, there is no funding from the Department or grant available to bring our children’s dreams to fruition.”
St John’s Parochial School is thrilled to promote its second annual family fun run on 19th May, which will bring the school community together, and anyone who wants a fun day out, while keeping fit at the same time.
Participants need to register from 10.15am at the park entrance opposite the KDYS on Denny Street while the run itself will start at 11am.

PEIL FAOI 15: Last week was a busy week with mixed fortunes! (i) Following a win on Sunday nightthe 28th our Division 9 team was in action again 24 hours later when we hosted Ballymac. We had an exciting game but a strong Ballymac team took the laurels. So, the current state of play is as follows: on Wednesday next (15th) our B team will face Killarney Legion in the Division 9 semi-final. The game will be played in Killarney. Best wishes, boys!
(ii) On Wednesday night the 1st our Division 1 team travelled to Listry to take on Keel/Listry in a must wingame to remain in Division 1. Following a poor opening few minutes, after which we trailed by 6 points, we finally got going and upped our game! At the half-time break we were 6 points to the good! A great comeback! We looked forward to the 2nd half! We started with gusto (le flosc agus le fonn) and an early point gave us a 7 point lead but, unfortunately, the strong Keel/Listry boys reorganised themselves and picked away at our hard-earned lead; eventually ag deireadh thiar thall, the Ciarraí Láir lads were winners by 2 points. Croíthe briste! So, the current state of play is as follows: our A team has been scheduled to face An Ghaeltacht in the Division 2 semi-final this Wednesday evening (8th) in our own Connolly Park. The Credit Union SFL Div 1 Round 6
Ballymacelligott 1-10
Dr Crokes 4-12
Venue: Ballymacelligott Date: 4th May 2024
Round 6 of the County League was a welcome return to our home ground for our senior team and supporters. The opposition was top of the table Dr. Crokes who proved why they were top of the table with a decisive win in Ballymacelligott on Saturday evening.
The crucial score in the game proved to be a second goal conceded by Ballymacelligott just before halftime. Up to that point, Ballymac were losing by two points and doing well.
It was a lovely evening for football in Ballymacelligott on Saturday evening, and it was a privilege, for us to welcome Patrick O’Sullivan, The Chairman of the Kerry County Committee to our home ground.
Dr Crokes took the lead, which they never lost, with two points from Cian McMahon and Micheal Burns. Ballymac’s first point came from Daire Keane and this was immediately followed by a goal from Daithi Casey and a point from Mikey Casey for Dr Crokes.
The Ballymac lads recovered well from this setback and Brian Lonergan scored a point and helped secure the ball and pass to Niall Collins who scored the home side’s third point. Aidan Breen added another point for Ballymac.
Micheal Burns and Mikey Casey added two for Crokes. With seventeen minutes gone Dr Crokes were leading 1-5 to 0-4.
Darragh Regan and Aidan Breen scored two more points for Ballymac. Michael Burns added one for Dr Crokes.
Two more points, from Aidan Breen and Michael Herlihy and there were just two points between the teams. In the 29th minute, Dr Crokes scored that crucial goal that came from a free taken by Micheal Burns.
Half Time Score: Ballymacelligott 0-8 Dr Crokes 2-07.
Dr Crokes took the momentum from the first half and added 2 goals and three points to the scoreboard before Ballymac scored their first point twenty minutes into the half from Vinnie Horan.
This period saw Dr Crokes at their best with superb passing and accuracy at every level. Ballymac went on to score another point and a goal from Captain Vinnie Horan. Dr Crokes added two more points before the final whistle.
Full-Time Score: Ballymacelligott 1-10 Dr Crokes 4-12
Despite losing the game there were some great individual performances from our players, Sean Rice and Cian Counihan in the backs, and Vinnie Horan, Brian Lonergan, and Daragh Regan in the forwards.
Team and Scorers:
Christy Leen, Sean Rice, Brian Cassidy, Darragh Sweeney, Cian Counihan, Eoin Creedon, Adam Sheehy, Michéal Reidy, Aidan Breen (0-3), Niall Collins (0-1), Vinnie Horan (Capt) (1-2) Michael Herlihy (0-1), Darragh Regan(0-1), Brian Lonergan (0-1), Daire Keane (0-1)

Last Tuesday evening was great occasion for club minor player Jack Joy who made his competitive county minor debut against Cork in the Munster Minor Championship. Jack contributed very well to help get Kerry over the line chipping in with a very important point in the second half.
It was also a great honour for his family and the club where his football journey began. We wish Jack and Eoin Moriarty, who is also on the panel, the very best of luck in season ahead. Best of luck this week as he is named on team who play Tipperary in Semple Stadium in Thurles.

Cul Camp
The summer Cul Camps are open for booking at https://www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie/. There are still a few places left for the Tralee Parnells camp on 12th to 16th August.
Senior Hurling
Our Senior hurlers welcomed Causeway to Caherslee last Friday evening in round seven of the County hurling league.
After an encouraging start, the concession of a couple of soft goals midway through the first half meant Parnells had a hill to climb for the remainder of the match.
However a brighter second half performance meant they stayed competitive against a strong Causeway side for whom Keith Carmody was always a thorn in Parnells side. Final score: Tralee Parnells 0-10 Causeway 3-19
Meanwhile our B team had their first outing of the season away to Kilmoyley B in Division 2 of the Co hurling league last Wednesday.
Stepping up from Division 3 from last year was always going to be a hard ask but there were some positive signs of things to come despite going down to a very strong home side. Captain Johnny Downey got Parnells only goal of the match. Final score: Tralee Parnells B 1-9 Kilmoyley B 4-14
Schools Camogie
The annual Kerry Secondary schools Camogie blitz took place on Monday 29th in Caherslee. This was hugely successful event for schools Camogie where Tralee Parnells players were well represented on the squads from Presentation Tralee, Mercy Mounthawk and Causeway Comprehensive.
Presentation Tralee won the Junior Cup title while Mercy Mounthawk secured the Senior Cup title.
This is the second year in a row for both schools to win these events. A special mention to Georgia Kennedy who captained the winning Presentation team as well as receiving Junior Player of the Tournament. Thank you to the event sponsor Kerry Group, Claire Salmon and to Martina Lawless and her Mounthawk team for organising the event.
Kerry U16 Camogie
Kerry put in a strong performance and battled until the end but unfortunately Kildare came away with the win in the U16 Championship.
Well done to all of our club players on the panel: Jessica Leen, Emma Gaynor, Anna O, Caoilainn Culloo, Siofra Murphy, Georgia Kennedy, Anna Chute, Eimear Dillane and Orla Costello
Kerry U15 camogie
Well done Parnells players Emma, Siofra and Aoibhin and the Kerry Camogie U15 squad that played against Limerick at a sunny Ballyagran GAA pitch.
Unfortunately, Limerick proved to be very strong opponents and Kerry were defeated. This was the first game for the girls and it was great to see so many clubs represented. Their next match will take place on 25th May.
We return to county league action on Friday night next, 10th May when Spa are the visitors to Strand Road for round 6 – throw in is @ 7.15 pm
Division 6A:
We continued our good run in Div 6 with a 3-12 to 2-10 win over Legion on Friday night last, 3rd May. Jake Hoare with two goals and TJ McMahon with the other were our goal scorers. We will play Ballylongford, away, in our final game on the weekend of 19th May.
We currently sit in 2nd place in the group and are well set for a play off place.
Kerry Seniors:
Kerry retained their Munster senior championship when defeating Clare on Sunday on a final scoreline of 0-23 to 1-13. It was far from a vintage Kerry performance but management will be happy with the progress being made.
Uniquely, we had 3 former club managers on the sidelines – Jack O’Connor and Micheál Quirke were in the Kerry dugout with Mark Fitzgerald in the Clare camp.
Mark has done a terrific job in Clare since taking over from Colm Collins last year; Clare were largely a new side from that which contested last year’s final and they displayed all the qualities that Mark espouses – a strong defence, competitive and combative forwards and midfield – they were in the game all through and their total of 1-13 speaks for itself.
Attention now turns to the qualifiers with Kerry in Group 4 where they will be joined by the runners up in Leinster as no 2 seeds, with Monaghan @ 3 and Meath @ 4 – this will mean a home game in Killarney on weekend of 18/19th vs Monaghan, followed by a trip to Navan vs Meath and concluding with a neutral game vs Leinster runners up.
Clare for their part are in group 3 where they will face the Ulster provincial winners plus Tyrone and Cork.
Kerry U20s:
Kerry were too good for Cork in the Munster final played in Austin Stack Park on Weds night last 1st May.
Tomás Kennedy was our sole starting representative and though wearing 12 played the vast majority of the game at full forward; he scored the game’s only goal when rifling in a shot just minutes into the 2nd half and went on to play a starring role as Kerry rattled off the points to secure a well merited win.
He had what can only be described as a stupendous catch in the 2nd half which drew much admiration from the crowd.
Kerry will now play Meath on Sat 11th next in the All Ireland semi final in Thurles where throw-in is @ 3 pm; Roscommon and Tyrone contest the other semi final.
We would like to wish Tomás all the best along with Ben Hanafin and Darragh who are members of the panel.
Juvenile Academy Notes:
Another great morning was had by all Sunday morning in Ballyrickard, numbers were high despite been a Bank holiday weekend and Munster Final day. All age groups enjoyed their morning and coaches have asked that they all practice their skills during the week at home with the videos shared on clubzap groups.
U9 Boys:
The U9’s travelled cross country to Rathbeag Friday evening to play Rathmore in the next round of Go-games. Our boys played great football, showing off some really nice passages of play. Kudos to Rathmore for having everything so well organised before we arrived. We wish them all the best for the season ahead. They also enjoyed a well deserved break from academy Sunday morning.
U11 Boys:
Great football played by both u11 teams in Pat Healy Park Ballyrickard Thursday evening. It was great to see the boys showing off their skills, teamwork and pride in the blue and white jersey. They had a skills based training session on Saturday finishing off their week nicely.
Congratulations to our U13 player Rían Tuohy who was chosen to play in the Primary Games at half time in the Munster final Sunday – Rian scored 4-03 on the day!
Congratulations to Ruarì Kennedy and Nick Lacey who both started for Kerry Under 16s in a win vs Laois Saturday. Ruarì started in goals while Nick started at corner forward and scored 1-3. Everyone in Kerins O’Rahillys is very proud.

U16 Girls
A good week this week although numbers were down at training on Tuesday, with our older girls playing a minor game; those who trained put in a good session with speed gates to make it interesting.
On Thursday we played Listowel at home even with the distraction of a late time change our girls stayed focused for what was a true fight – we came out on top on the night putting us in a great position with 8 goals from Aimee, Aoife, Chloe and Aoibheann final score was 8-9 to 2-13.
Our focus is now on feile on Monday – our management were delighted to be asked to take the team again this year and held a light training session over the weekend in preparation. Best of luck to the girls.

Scór: Scór is very much a ’niche’ activity within Na Gaeil. Of course we’re first & foremost a football club, but Scór is the cultural arm of the GAA and is a really great thing to be involved in – especially for kids. It gives them confidence & is good fun! If you’re reading this & think you might like your child to be involved, please contact Margaret at 086 0855008. Or better again, if you’re a parent with maybe something to offer to our small but enthusiastic Scór committee, please get in touch….
Senior Men: Our senior men were away to Beaufort last Saturday night in Round 6 of the Credit Union Co. League. On a perfect night for football it was Beaufort who got out of the blocks quickest and led by 4 points to 1 after just 6 minutes.
A point from play and a well struck 45 from our top scorer on the night Dara Devine got us to within 1 of the home side.
Beaufort added another point from play but then our lads took over and had their best spell in the game, notching 4 unanswered points in 5 minutes to leave us in a good position, 7 points to 5 ahead after 20 minutes.
Two Beaufort frees had the sides level before a free from Damien Bourke put us ahead once more. Yet another free saw Beaufort draw level before Dara Devine again showed his accuracy from frees to nudge Na Gaeil ahead 9 points to 8 at the half time whistle.
Unfortunately for Na Gaeil the first 6 minutes of the second half proved disastrous. On 3 minutes our defence failed to clear their lines and the home side snatched a goal.
Soon afterwards things got even worse when a high ball into the square found the Beaufort full forward and he gave John Kearney no chance, blasting the ball to the net.
Beaufort quickly followed with another converted free to leave us trailing by 2-9 to 0-9. To be fair to our lads they rallied and two frees and a 45 from Dara Devine reduced the margin to just 3 points with only 12 minutes of the second half gone.
At this stage it looked like we were right back in the game but sadly it wasn’t to be as we failed to register a score for the remainder of the game and Beaufort added 5 more points to their tally. Final score: Beaufort 2-14, Na Gaeil 0-12.
Team: John Kearney, Enda O’Connor, Ryan O’Neill, Seán Barrett, Peter Doyle, Eoin Doody, Jack Costello, Jamesie O’Connor, Damien Bourke, Cian Devine, Dara Devine, Kieran O’Connor, Mark Lynch, Kieran O’Donovan, Jack Sheehan. Subs: Shane Daly, Shane Kelly, Seán O’Connor, Kian Sheehan, Kevin O’Donoghue, Ruairí Ó hAiniféin, Oisín O’Sullivan, Oisín O’Brien, Aaron Dewey, Tadhg Reen, Seamus Looney, Dan O’Connor, Shawn Duggan, Liam Óg Kingston, Jack Rodgers.
Senior Ladies: Our senior ladies will be hoping for another good performance in the Donal Curtin Cup today when they host Scartaglen at 4pm.
Kerry (Ladies) Munster Championship: Well done to the Kerry Ladies, especially Deirdre Kearney, Mary O’Connell, Bríd O’Connor, Eilís O’Connor and Jadyn Lucey, who defeated Waterford in Round 3 of the Munster Championship in Cordal yesterday by 1-8 to 1-7. The win sees them into the Munster Final on May 18th where they will renew rivalries with Cork.
Kerry (Men) Munster Champions: Congratulations to Diarmuid O’Connor and the Kerry team who defeated Clare in the Munster Final yesterday in Ennis.
Kerry Hurling: Hard luck to the Kerry senior hurlers, especially the Na Gaeil lads, who lost to Laois in Round 3 of the Joe McDonagh Cup last Saturday.

U11 Boys: Our u11 boys play Laune Rangers in Killeen next Thursday at 6.30pm in the Co. League.
U15A Boys: U15A county league result: Na Gaeil 1-7, Laune Rangers 2-10. A difficult Division 1 campaign came to an end last Wednesday night (1st May) with a home defeat to a strong Laune Rangers team.
Despite opening the visitors up in the opening plays we couldn’t find the final pass to breach the Rangers defense. Battles were fierce throughout the park and both sets of players were playing some superb football.
At the break we trailed 8 points to 3. The start of the second half saw our best passages of play this year as Samson Abubakar, Joseph Field and Darragh O’Callaghan thundered into the game.
Danny Kingston and Shane O’Donovan got on the scoreboard as we drew level with 10 minutes remaining. Rangers upped the ante and finished the stronger running out 6 point winners.
Well done to all players and with a period of training ahead we’ve no doubt that results will come with the talent in the group.
Team; Sean O’Connell, Donncha Hartnett, Gearóid Moynihan, Eoin Tansley, Sean Óg O’Connor, Samson Abubakar, Philip McEneaney, Maurice Costello, Darragh O’Callaghan, Joseph Field, Shane O’Donovan, David Buckley, Aaron O’Donovan, Danny Kingston, Jacob Drzymala, Ruadh O’Brien, James Kelly, Luke Gannon, Ruairí Lacey, Fionán Collins, Eoghan Daly, Jake Barrett.
U15B Boys: Well done to our U15 B team who made it two wins from two after a superb comeback win over Glenflesk/Kilarvan last Friday night.
The opening quarter was low scoring as both teams struggled to find their scoring touch. Despite apparent parity around the field Glenlesk/Kilgarvan struck a purple patch and banged in three quick goals, which could have been more telling had Seán O’Connell not pulled off two superb saves from the visitor’s penalties.
Coupled with a goal from Luca Cronin and the strength of our squad, we still had hope. At the small break we trailed by 9, 1-3 to 3-6.
In the second period Na Gaeil came into their own. The strength of numbers played a toll on the visitors as Krys Karpovic, Joseph Field & Ruadh O’Brien came to the fore. Philip Doyle covered massive ground and clipped three lovely points. Luke Gannon was very impressive on the night, his boundless energy a huge factor in the win.
As we led by 7 points with 10 minutes to go, our keeper Sean O’Connell faced an unprecedented third penalty of the game. Amazingly, for the third time he defied the odds and kept his opponent at bay, pending a record check, surely he is the first Na Gaeil man to save three penalties in a game!?
We finished the game strongly with Rory Lacey, Gannon & Field on the scoresheet. Well done all and thanks to Glenflesk/Kilgarvan for a sporting game.
Squad: David Buckley, Krzysztof Karpowicz, Philip Doyle, Ethan Doyle, Luca Cronin, Jonathan Sheehy, Finn Murphy, Rhys O’Connor, Sean O’Connell, Jake Barrett, Joseph Field, Eoghan Daly, Ruadh O’Brien, Ibrahim Altayan, Aaron O’Donovan, Rory Lacey, Luke Gannon.

Cispheil (Basketball): Last Wednesday in Tallaght the girls of Gaelcholaiste Chiarraí finished runners-up to Crescent College in the All-Ireland School’s A final. It was a great achievement for the school. Well done to the Na Gaeil girls involved namely Avril Doyle, Orla Costello and Niamh Fitzgibbon.

The sun shone for us and made for a great first session back outside at St Pats on our fantastic astroturf facility. We had a great turnout of boys and girls and great help by older mentoring siblings. We worked on ball handling and tackling skills today and played dispossession games and mini matches for the older group.
Great participation by all with smiles all round! Very well done to Luca (following in his dad’s footsteps with his quick footwork!) and to Robyn for really getting stuck in with all the games today.
We enjoyed fruit, juice, and chats afterwards with the healthy club’s team. All volunteers welcome to help with keeping up this catering rota or joining the walking group from next week. Please let Fiona know if you can help.

Our U13 squad attended the Munster U20 final played in Austin Stacks Park last Wednesday. We had a fantastic turnout of 24 enthusiastic supporters who cheered for the team not in red for a change!
All the lads received a goodie bag as well much to their delight. A huge thank you to Joe Costello for all his help organising this outing!

U15
The last two week have been busy ones for our squad of under-15 players. As a combined team with Kerins O’Rahilly’s under-15’s we have played six games with mixed fortunes in the results.
On Monday 22nd April the B team played a well contested and sporting game against Glenflesk/Kilgarvan combination. With good football being played by both sides it was a very enjoyable game albeit the result wasn’t. On the following Wednesday it was the turn of the A-team with a game against Duagh.
This turned into a great battle between the two sides with the lead being exchanged throughout the game however at the final whistle we came up short by the minimum margin of a point.
On the following Friday both teams were in action when the A team played Northern Gaels and the B team against Na Gaeil and neither team enjoyed success.
On Monday 29th April we travelled to Killarney to play Killarney Legion B team and with a panel composed of a number of U13 players we came up against a very strong Legion side.
All the players must be complimented for battling to the end despite the physical disadvantage of our young panel on the night.
Our last game of the six was on Wednesday when we made the trip south Kerry to play St. Michael’s Foilmore/Ballinskelligs A team in Foilmore. This proved to be a close contest in the first half against the skill full local side.
However, in the second half playing good football we were more dominant resulting in an overdue win for these players.
As this was the second win in the A team group, we are waiting for confirmation on whether or not the team has qualified for a Shield semi-final, qualifying would be a good boost for the players.
U17
Our U17 came away with a win against An Gaeltacht last Monday night. Their next game takes place away on Monday Night at 7pm against St Michael’s Foilmore/Skellig Rangers/Valentia in St Michael’s Foilmore.

Our division 6 team did not play this weekend. Please see social media during the week to confirm times and dates of our next fixtures.
Senior Ladies – Our Senior ladies played Listowel Emmets on Friday night in Rd 5 of the Donal Curtin Cup. A number of forced changes in personnel saw a lot of positional changes from our Rd 4 game.
Emmets opened brightly and went 4 points up before a pointed free opened our account. Both teams worked hard and at the short whistle we were 0-5 to 1-6 down, We started well in Qtr 3 and brought the game back level and in fact 2 good saves from Emmets goalie denied us the lead.
A turnover to Emmets let them in for a goal and despite our trojan effort to the final whistle we were unable to narrow the gap. Well done to all and the players who gave 100 % to the final whistle. Our next game is Fossa away on 12th May followed by a back game with Glenflesk (Details TBC)

Fiadhna Tangney came off the bench and scored the winning point for Kerry in a pulsating contest at Cordal GAA club in Round 3 of the TG4 Munster Senior Championship.
Waterford will point to 6 second half wides as being detrimental to their cause whilst Kerry will be happy to face into a Munster Final after a win in a game that they might well have lost.
Kerry were first off the mark when Jadyn Lucey pointed a free following a foul on Hannah O’Donoghue and in the 6th minute Lorraine Scanlon got on the scoresheet after some very good play from Eilis O’Connor.
Continued below…
Waterford’s Kelly Ann Hogan pointed a free following a foul on the impressive Aoife Murray and Kerry had a huge let off in the 12th minute when Lauren McGregor rattled the post with a superb shot at goal.
A Kelly Ann Hogan free in the 16th minute brought Waterford level and straight from the resulting kick out Hogan put her side one up from play.
We had to wait another 6 minutes for the next score and it was Kerry’s Hannah O’Donoghue who finished to the back of the net after a sweeping move involving Lorraine Scanlon, Amy Harrington and Emma Dineen.
The lively Katie Murray and Jadyn Lucey traded scores before Niamh Ní Chonchúir put Kerry 1-4 to 0-4 ahead in the 28th minute. Kelly Ann Hogan pointed a free soon afterwards , and it was Kerry that took a 1-4 to 0-5 lead in at half time.
Waterford spurned a goal chance early in the second half when Eve Power had to be content with a point, but they got the goal they craved from a Kaci Brazil penalty following a foul on Aine O’Neill.
Cora Murray made a brilliant block from Jadyn Lucey at the other end and although Waterford took control of proceedings, they were wasteful in possession.
Niamh Ní Chonchuir got a welcome point for Kerry in the 48th minute to bring them to within one, 1-5 to 1-6, but Kelly Ann Hogan slotted over to give Waterford the lead once more.
Katie Brosnan, looking sharp, hit a brace of scores to draw Kerry level but with time running out it was another substitute, Fiadhna Tangney, who sealed the win for Kerry.

The last meeting of the sides will live long in the Kerry FC fans’ minds as a first home league win against the Midlanders on Matchday 9.
Goals from Sean McGrath, Ryan Kelliher and Kennedy Amechi sent the home support wild in Mounthawk Park as the fans were treated to a thrilling night in Tralee.

That game came in the middle of a run of eight games unbeaten in all competitions, writing new chapters into the Kingdom’s history books as the club’s second season continues.
But, somewhat disappointingly, the unbeaten run has come to an abrupt end, with three defeats in the last three for Conor McCarthy’s charges.
Home defeats against Athlone Town and Cork City while a defeat on the road in Bray have halted momentum, the kingdom will look to bounce back in Bishopsgate tomorrow night.
Longford Town meanwhile remain bottom of the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division, one place below Kerry with a game in hand.
Continued below…
A shift in management in recent weeks as well in Bishopsgate will mean we are likely to see a different Longford side that were beaten in Mounthawk Park just a few weeks ago.
Longford are also beaten in their last three games so two teams well out of form could prove to be one not to miss.
The last time Kerry met Longford ended in a historic occasion for the club, with Kerry securing their first home win in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division
With the quick turnaround from the Cork City game, a couple of players will have to be assessed before making the trip to Bishopsgate.
Kerry, who had a full bill of health for the visit of Cork to Mounthawk Park on Friday were forced into two changes before the 50-minute mark. Andy Spain limped off in the first half while Ronan Teahan also had to make an early exit just 5 minutes into the second half.
Speaking after Friday night’s game against Cork City, Conor McCarthy said; “The players will be off tomorrow (Saturday), plenty of their own recovery work to do.
Sunday morning we will assess, do a bit of work ahead of the Longford game. Look it’s a very short turnaround so training won’t be anything major but more for us to have an active recovery session and manage bodies.
We need to be 100% going up there, that’s why we have a squad of players here. So the boys who come in need to keep the standard and level up.”
Mike O’Halloran on Kerry defeat yesterday against Laois at Austin Stack Park in the Joe McDonagh Cup…
Kerry 0-18
Laois 1-25
A most disappointing day for Kerry hurling.
Laois were late getting to Tralee but they lost no time in getting on to the scoreboard with Liam O’Connell splitting the posts after 20 seconds to put Laois ahead, a lead they never relinquished.
Laois led 1-10 to 0-07 at half-time, with Kerry struggling in every line and finding it very difficult to deal with the power and skill of the Laois men.
The ability of the Laois players to find their men with precise passes both to hand and hurley was in total contrast to the Kerry players who struggled to transfer defence into attack.
Continued below…
Up front Maurice O’Connor and Dan Goggin were unable to get into the game due to being marshalled by the Laois defenders and the poor quality of the ball they were presented with.
In the first half Kerry had points from MacKessey, Colin Walsh, Michael Leane Ronan Walsh and Killian Hayes from play with Maurice O’Connor scoring two points from placed balls.
Kerry hoped to get the first score of the second period but it was Laois through Aaron Dunphy who did that.
Kerry struggled again the second half and were unable to hold on to the coat tails of a rampant Laois. Every time Kerry got a score, Laois replied immediately. Kerry only once were able to put two scores back to back without a Laois reply.
Continued below…
Maurice O’Connor scored one point from a free, Brandon Barrett also had one, Ronan Walsh put two on the board, Colin Walsh scored three, with Fionan MacKessey adding four.
Kerry received a lesson from Laois yesterday, a lesson that my stand them in good stead for their game against Offaly in two weeks time.
One of those lessons is that you must be first to the ball another, a lesson that they will need to be more direct. The game against Offaly is make or break, a loss and the Joe McDonagh Cup will have to wait for another year. Final score Kerry 0-18 Laois 1-25.

David Moriarty reports on the big game at a sold-out Mounthawk Park last night…
KERRY FC 0-1 CORK CITY
On Friday night Kerry FC welcomed Munster rivals Cork City to Mounthawk Park for the first time this season.
The ground was dry and the weather was somewhat sunny on a perfect evening for League of Ireland football to kick-off the Bank Holiday weekend in Tralee. The last time these two faced each other it was the first game of the season in a sold-out Turners Cross.
City won 2-0 on the night making the score line look better than the performance from Kerry FC as they were introduced to the side who are more than likely going to go straight back up to the Premier Division next season.
Continued below…
Cork have drawn four of their away games this season as Kerry will hope to pick up just their second win of the campaign.
The home side have lost twice since their outstanding eight-game unbeaten streak and there was no better time to make things right than picking up points in a sold-out Mounthawk Park.
Kerry FC had a fully fit squad for the first time this campaign which probably seemed to be a headache for First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy, but a good one at that. A fantastic atmosphere was created by both sets of fans ahead of kick-off on what was a historic night for Kerry football.
Referee David Murphy awarded Cork City a penalty just 8 minutes into the game as Cian Coleman played a long ball over the top.
The flight of the ball was not judged well by Antonio Tuta and Andy Spain, which left a loose ball on the edge of the box to be hit by Joshua Fitzpatrick.
His effort was blocked by his own player, Jaden Umeh, but fell to Cathal O’Sullivan who tried to finish the ball into an empty net but was deemed to be blocked by the hand of Kevin Williams.
Evan McLaughlin stood up to take the penalty and slotted it down the middle to put the away side in front and send the travelling support into a frenzy.
Continued below…
It got a bit frantic as the game went on, the majority of possession with Cork City, but what was more noticeable was the number of yellow cards being dished out with the likes of Daire McCarthy, Joshua Fitzpatrick and Greg Bolger all going into the referee’s book in the opening half.
Jaden Umeh had a chance to make it 2-0 just ten minutes after the opening goal but his lobbed effort went wide of the post. Umeh forced Kerry FC captain Andy Spain into an error, went around Tuta but the young striker was unable to hit the target and his shot went well wide of the mark.
Kerry FC ended the half positively as they were able to get a couple of opportunities on goal in the last ten minutes of the half.
The first came from Daniel Okwute who made some space for himself outside the area before striking one from a distance, but the shot was a bit tame and was gathered easily by Bradley Wade in the Cork goal.
The second was an Ethan Kos header who came on for the injured Andy Spain and nearly made an impact straight away but a glancing header from Kos went just wide of Wade’s right-hand post.
Kerry went in behind by a single goal to nil at the short whistle and knew that if they stayed in the game long enough that they had every chance of getting a goal and salvaging at least a point from this one.
Cork City opened the half with a couple of good chances that could not be pounced on. Jaden Umeh, firstly hitting the crossbar after a free kick into the box from Greg Bolger was pushed away as far as O’Sullivan whose shot was deflected into the path of Umeh.
He seemed to have a clear shot on goal but could not capitalise as he rattled the frame of the goal.
The second chance came from Cathal O’Sullivan, which was possibly one of the best of the game.
A fantastic long-range shot produced an unbelievable fingertip save from Antonio Tuta to keep his side in the game for that bit longer. The Croatian keeper came to Kerry FC’s rescue on that occasion
Kerry FC’s biggest chance of the half came with twenty minutes to play as Daniel Okwute did very well down the right wing, Wade knocked his cross into space, but the Cork defence did extremely well to block Amechi’s shot and clear any incoming danger from Sean McGrath who was lurking in the penalty area
Kerry continued to pile the pressure on the City defenders leading into the additional time but despite the league newcomers best efforts, they couldn’t find the back of the Cork net.
There is not much time to rest as Kerry FC are back on the road on Monday as they face Longford Town away at Bishopsgate with kick-off at the earlier time of 5pm.
KERRY FC TEAM: 1. ANTONIO TUTA, 15. KEVIN WILLIAMS, 5. ANDY SPAIN (C), 18. SAMUEL ALADESANUSI, 3. SEAN O’CONNELL, 8. RONAN TEAHAN, 21. DAIRE MCCARTHY, 7. SEAN MCGRATH, 13. NATHAN GLEESON, 11. DANIEL OKWUTE, 9. RYAN KELLIHER.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…
Grandparents play an important role in their grandchild’s life. However, some grandparents have difficulty seeing their grandchildren and spending time with them.
They can find themselves excluded from the lives of their grandchildren, and this can be very upsetting for them and for the children involved.
This can happen for many reasons, for example, if the relationship between the grandparent and parent has broken down.
Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, advises; “Grandparents do not have automatic rights in relation to their grandchildren, but there are steps you can take to improve your level of contact with them.”
Continued below…
How do I request more time with my grandchildren?
You should first speak to the child’s parents or guardians. Negotiation should be explored, to try and come to an arrangement so that you can spend time with your grandchildren. If no agreement can be reached, you should consider family mediation.
This is where a trained independent professional, called a mediator, helps you and the parents come to an agreement in a safe space. Mediation addresses the needs and interests of everyone involved.
“Mediation can have better long-term effects on the family as a whole, as both sides take ownership of the arrangement they come to. The process is much less confrontational than the matter being dealt with in court” says Deirdre.
“If mediation is not successful, you can apply to the court for access to your grandchildren and furthermore, in certain situations, you can apply for custody or guardianship.”
Applying for access to a grandchild
If you are having difficulty maintaining contact with your grandchildren, you can apply for access through your local District Court. Access means you will have a legal right to direct contact with the child, which may include overnight stays (sleepovers). Before granting your application, the court will consider:
• Your existing connection with the child
• Any risk of harmful disruption to the child’s life
• The wishes of the child’s parents or guardians
• The wishes of the child if they are capable of forming their own views.
“To make an application for access, you must complete a form called Form 58.19 and submit it to the court. You can download this form from Courts.ie or call into your local CIC to get one.
The court will always put your grandchild’s needs first. The child’s best interests are set out in Section 63 of the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015.
The rules about access are set out in Section 11B of the Guardianship of Infants Act 1964, as amended. You should get professional legal advice before making an application.
Continued below…
Applying for custody of a grandchild
“If you have custody of a child, you are responsible for their day-to-day care, accommodation and upbringing. Any relative, including a grandparent, can apply to their local District Court for custody of a child,” advises Deirdre.
“Usually, the court will only grant you custody if it has the parents’ or guardians’ consent. However, the court can decide that the parents’ consent is not needed if a custody order is in the child’s best interests.
“If you are granted custody of your grandchild and they are to live with you, the court can specify the level of contact, if any, that the child must have with their parent(s). You should get professional legal advice before making an application for custody.”
Kinship care
In some circumstances, grandparents, other relatives or a family friend may take on the full-time care of children and young people, when parents are not able to care for them. Sometimes this is referred to as a private family arrangement or ‘kinship care’.
Most kinship care arrangements are informal unlike relative foster care which is a formal arrangement. Contact a CIC for more details.
Getting financial support
If you are the main carer of the child, and the child is not being properly maintained financially by either or both parents, you can apply to the District Court for a maintenance order. This means that, if the court grants your application, the parent(s) must give you money towards the care of the child.
You may also be eligible to claim the Guardian’s Payment from the Department of Social Protection.
It is not necessary to be a legally appointed guardian. You may get this payment if the child lives with you, and you are responsible for their care.
Becoming a guardian
“Guardianship means you have legal responsibility for certain decisions and to carry out duties in relation to a child’s upbringing. For example, decisions about their medical or dental treatment, or their religious or cultural upbringing.
As a grandparent, or other relative carer, you can apply to your local District Court for guardianship if:
• You have provided the day-to-day care of the child for at least 12 months in a row and
• There is no parent or guardian willing (or able) to carry out guardianship responsibilities in respect of the child
You can also apply for guardianship if the child’s parents die without appointing a guardian in their will. A person can apply for guardianship up until a child reaches 18 years of age.”
To apply for guardianship, you must complete a form called a ‘Notice of application by an eligible person to be appointed a guardian’. This form, which is sometimes called a Form 58.30, can be submitted to your local District Court. You can download this form from www.courts.ie or by contacting your local CIC. You should get professional legal advice before making an application.”
Your guardianship duties
The court will decide the extent of your guardianship rights and responsibilities. You may have the same duties as the child’s parents, or only certain duties. The court can also remove your guardianship rights at a later date if it is in the child’s best interests.
Temporary guardianship
A parent can nominate you to act as a temporary guardian of their child if they are unable to carry out their own guardianship duties – for example, if they become seriously ill or injured.
I was granted access or custody, but still cannot see my grandchild
“If you already have an access order or a custody order from the court, but you are still not getting contact with your grandchild, you can seek an enforcement order from the court. An enforcement order is a further legal instruction to the parents or guardians that they must allow you to see your grandchild, at the specific times set out in the order.
“The enforcement order may allow additional access to compensate for lost time, reimbursement for any wasted expenses or require those involved to attend a parenting programme or counselling.
If the parents or guardians refuse to comply with an access or custody order, they can be fined up to €2,500, go to prison for up to 12 months, or both.”
I was granted access or custody, but my circumstances have changed
“The terms set out in your access order or custody order do not have to last forever” says Deirdre. “If your circumstances change, you can apply to the court for a variation order. This means the court will update some (or all) aspects of the access or custody order. You can also ask the court to cancel the original access or custody order altogether. Contact your local CIC for more details.
Appealing the court’s decision
“The District Court makes decisions about access, custody and guardianship applications based on the child’s best interests. If you are not satisfied with the court’s decision, you can make an appeal within 14 days of the decision being made. To make an appeal, you must complete a form called a ‘Notice of Appeal to District Court’. This form can be downloaded from courts.ie or you can get one from your local CIC. You should get professional legal advice before making an appeal.”
Getting legal advice and other supports
It is important to get professional legal advice before going to court. “Solicitors’ fees can vary considerably so shop around and get some quotes before deciding who to use. Alternatively, you may qualify for Legal Aid.
Another option is FLAC (Free Legal Advice Centres) which is an independent, voluntary organisation that operates a network of legal advice clinics throughout the country. These clinics are confidential, free of charge and open to all. Contact your nearest Citizens Information Centre for information on FLAC services in your area.”

There is a lot more information available in relation to this subject and various organisations and supports available to you. If you would like more information about any of the issues covered, please telephone or call into your local CIC. Staff will be happy to discuss your situation with you and lay out your options.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan has the pick of the movies on TV today…
The films start today with a sequel (the hint is in the title) is The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part(Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is an animated adventure set five years after the first film.
Teenager Finn has rebuilt Bricksburg into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. When Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt) is disturbed by a vision of impending doom, he and Lucy (Elizabeth Banks) must fight to protect their home city from invaders.

The Green Mile (Saturday 9pm RTE2) reunites the “Shawshank” team of the Steven King novel with the screenwriting, directing and producing talents of Frank Darabont.
Michael Clarke Duncan, in a career best performance, plays John Coffey, a giant of a man on death row.
However, his sensitivity, gentle nature and amazing healing powers makes the Chief Warden Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) begin to doubt that he could be capable of murder.
Also starring David Morse, James Cromwell, Bonnie Hunt, Sam Rockwell, Harry Dean Staunton and Patricia Clarkson in a uniformly brilliant cast, this is highly recommended.

The End of the Affair (Saturday 9.45 TG4) is Neil Jordan’s period drama starring Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore, adapted from the novel by Graham Greene.
Set in 1946, a chance encounter between a man and his former lover’s husband set a tragic string of events in train. Why did the lovers split up? The recounting of their affair lends to long buried feelings being unearthed. Again, great performances and a visual treat.
Liam Neeson has established himself in recent years as a more mature everyman action hero. In Cold Pursuit (Saturday 9.55pm RTE1), he plays Nels Coxman, hard working snowplough driver.
He abandons his quiet mountain life when his son is murdered by a power drug lord. In this film, Nels has a very specific set of skills, which these times are of the hunting variety, which is bad news for the baddies.
His actions also set up a turf war between two rival gang bosses so there is no shortage of action scenes.
The traditional Bank Holiday Clint Eastwood film is Pale Rider(Sunday 12.05am RTE1) where a mysterious preacher with lethal gunfighting skills helps a mining community fight a ruthless landowner. Enjoy!

TRALEE Rowing Club is celebrating biodiversity in Tralee for Biodiversity Week with an event on Sunday, May 19 at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre.
People are invited to drop in from 11am -1pm and meet community groups, agencies and enterprises involved in biodiversity conservation and learn the art of willow weaving or join them in the afternoon for activities and guided walks.
Tralee Rowing Club is currently running its Biodiversity Awareness Implementation Project funded by Community Foundation Ireland.
Continued below…
This project arose out work undertaken by Dr Noel Mulligan, Ecologist on the Tralee Ship Canal and the amenity that Kerry County Council has developed over recent years since the canal was restored in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
Tralee Rowing Club’s Community Biodiversity Action Plan – Gateway to Biodiversity was also funded by Community Foundation Ireland.
It was clear from the research undertaken in developing the plan that there is a wealth of biodiversity that needs to be protected and needs to be promoted.
The 3km long canal and its adjacent pathway has some interesting and very accessible ecology. In addition, the canal lies within and is surrounded by important wildlife sites including five Special Areas of Conservation, three Special Protection Areas and two Nature Reserves.
All of this wildlife and perhaps one of the finest public walking, cycling and running amenities in the wider region makes the Tralee Ship Canal the gateway to biodiversity and to Kerry the wildlife kingdom.
In addition to guided walks to areas of biodiversity Interest, the Tralee Rowing Club project involves a radio programme to be recorded and aired in the autumn on the theme of Biodiversity. The centre piece of the project is the upcoming Biodiversity Showcase Event that is being run on 19th May at the Tralee Bay Wetland Centre.
The Biodiversity Showcase Event is being jointly run by Tralee Rowing Club in partnership with Kerry Co Co Biodiversity Office. It is one of the many events and activities being run in Kerry as part of the Biodiversity Week 2024 running from 17th to 26th May.

A LOCAL councillor has expressed concern about recent reports of anti-social behavior on a Fenit beach.
Fianna Fáil Tralee MD Councillor Mikey Sheehy said he is deeply concerned about reports involving drag racing and reckless driving.
A local resident alerted Cllr Sheehy to an alarming incident where a group of individuals was seen drag racing and performing dangerous manoeuvres on the beach, endangering both the tombolo linking to Fenit Island and the safety of beachgoers.
Continued below…
“The tombolo, a vital natural feature, is currently under threat due to erosion, and local efforts are underway to protect and enhance it,” said Cllr Sheehy. “However, these efforts are undermined by the irresponsible actions of a few individuals who prioritise thrills over environmental preservation and community safety.”
In light of this incident, Cllr Sheehy has called for immediate action to address this issue and prevent further damage to the beach and surrounding ecosystem.
He has urged authorities to increase surveillance and enforcement measures, including the possibility of deploying a summer guard for Fenit, to deter anti-social behaviour and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
He encouraged anyone with information about such incidents to come forward and assist in tackling the issue.
