MET Eireann has elevated its wind warning to ‘Red’ status for exposed coastal and mountain areas of Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry as Storm Rachel batters the west coast.

They say wind gusts 130 to 150km/h are possible with high onshore seas. The warning was issued at 2pm today and applies until Thursday at 12 noon.

The issue of Red level severe weather warnings should be a comparatively rare event and implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties.

A status Yellow rainfall warning is in place for Kerry from 2pm today until 6pm on Thursday where rainfall totals of 25 to 35 mm are expected.
