IF, as expected, retail outlets will open up fully next week, the message is Manor West Retail Park is ready.

Like so many retail businesses in Kerry, it’s been extremely challenging for the over 650 people working in Manor West Retail Park, and a major focus for Centre Manager Derek Rusk has been keeping the businesses open as much as possible, while at the same time ensuring safe shopping for visitors and a safe working environment for everyone working in the retail park.

Derek said; “Many of our shops were able to remain open during the pandemic, either fully or for click and collect while others had to close. Each scenario brought its own set of challenges.

“However, we are all now working together towards opening as many of the shops’ doors in December once restrictions have been lifted.  We are putting up the decorations and planning even more safety procedures to ensure a safe and relaxing shopping experience for everyone visiting us in the build up to and during Christmas.”

Manor West, which will be celebrating its 20th birthday next year, has been a mecca for shopping since it first opened its doors back in 2001, with some of the most popular retailers in Ireland on site and over 1,000 free parking spaces.

Commenting on the fast approaching Christmas season, Derek added; “Despite everything, the whole team here at Manor West are very much looking forward to Christmas this year.  Our customers deserve a Christmas to remember and we are going to do our very best to give them that.

“Our Christmas lights will be going up and our crib will be the centre of attention and an opportunity to give back to a worthy local Charity. We are very grateful for the continued support of the Manor West customers throughout this difficult year, and we look forward to welcoming everyone through our doors this festive season”.

Manor West has over 40 stores to choose from to help everyone find the perfect gift this Christmas – and for those who are hard to buy for, the Manor West MultiCentre Gift Card gives shoppers the freedom and choice to shop with top brands located with the retail park and shopping centre.

The gift card can load all amounts from €10 up to €1,250 and can be purchased in store at the customer service desk.  For more information on their gift card and Christmas opening times please visit www.manorwest.ie  or find them on Facebook and Twitter.

HQKerry’s co-owners, Tom O’Leary and Ken Tobin welcoming the inclusion of HQ spaces in Listowel and Tralee in the Happen network said: “Collaboration is the key to everything. We see this everyday in our hubs in Listowel & Tralee. Joining the Happen network of co-working spaces opens our members and our hubs up to wider opportunities to expand and grow. Through this partnership we will be able to collaborate with other hubs to bring more expertise and support to our members in HQKerry.

“Critical for us here in Kerry is to work closely with our colleagues throughout the Midwest region in order to attract new jobs through our hubs. Survey To Help Find Ways To Provide Opportunities For Retailers In Tralee

.
Ken Tobin.

RESEARCH has been ongoing in Tralee for the past number of months by IT Tralee students as part of a project undertaken for Tralee Chamber to support retailers in Tralee.

Following detailed work undertaken earlier this year as part of the ‘Lets Talk About Town’ surveys, Tralee Chamber and a team of students studying for their Bachelor of Business in IT Tralee are analysing ways to provide new opportunities for existing retailers in Tralee and to attract new retailers into the town.

They are asking the public to simply tell them about the brands and products they would like to see available in the town. The Survey Link is: https://forms.gle/eMeX5RE5RARziaQ98

Continued  below…

.

For the students, this forms part of their research project module course work in which they undertake a live-case, client-initiated research project as part of a project team.

For Tralee Chamber, this research will provide a comprehensive list of brands sought by the various generations and will also identify the land-use of the buildings within Tralee’s historic town centre boundary.

This in turn, will inform future retail initiatives which will support businesses in Tralee and will help to enhance the town centre experience.

Ken Tobin commenting on the research said; “By the end of the research we aim to have an up to date analysis of land use and vacancy in the town centre, and to have identified key opportunities which we will use to support existing retailers in Tralee to be able to expand or sustain their businesses, as well as potentially identifying new opportunities for retail to come and open in Tralee.

Last May we undertook a detailed survey to identify broadly what people wanted from Tralee as the town develops, this next step will help us identify how we address some of the vacancy in town. In order to make informed decisions on shopping in Tralee we are asking the public once again to give us their thoughts about what they want from retailers, and what they think may be missing.

The public’s participation in this research will be a show of support for the future our town centre and for our local businesses. It will help our retailers adapt and meet the needs of consumers who very much want a strong retail offering in Tralee.”

The research being undertaken by the students from IT Tralee will be concluding shortly, so the public are urged to complete the online survey on https://forms.gle/eMeX5RE5RARziaQ98

Some Staff At Kerry Airport To Be Placed On Temporary Layoff

.
Kerry Airport

KERRY Airport Ireland management have advised staff that, to augment the financial losses associated with the downturn due to Covid-19, 25 employees will be placed on temporary layoff from Monday, November 16.

The Airport will remain open throughout and beyond the current Level 5 restrictions to service the Kerry-Dublin PSO flights, but the four-week cancellation of all Ryanair flights has led to this decision.

The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said: “Every effort has been made until now to minimise the impact of the financial losses associated with this downturn in activity. Unless we take this action, Kerry Airport will not be in a financial position to withstand this prolonged decline caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Continued below…

.

“Every avenue to prevent the decisions I now make have been exhausted and I sincerely thank every one of my colleagues for the efforts they have made to keep all our operations in place since March.”

The duration of this layoff is uncertain at present and may well extend beyond 4 weeks, while a cohort of people who remain will cover multiple operational requirements.

Every effort will be made to get all employees back to the workplace as soon as possible and Management will stay in touch and available throughout the layoff and contact staff with any updates as soon as possible.

“I fully understand how upsetting this news is for everybody and this is certainly a day we all fought so bravely to avoid,” concluded John Mulhern.

IT Tralee And Skillnet Networks Launch Retail Management Programme

.

INSTITUTE of Technology Tralee in partnership with the Skillnet Networks have launched a new retail management programme.

The programme is tailored to the specific needs of the local retail sector.  It was designed by staff at IT Tralee in close consultation with significant players in the retail sector and with representatives of the three Skillnet Networks in Kerry.

The new programme allows those currently working in retailing to continue working with their current employer while studying for their BA in Retail Experience Management.

Continued below…

.

Each student will be nominated for participation on the programme by their employer. After three years students will graduate with their degree.

Students will attend IT Tralee’s North Campus for one 4-week study block each semester.  These blocks will be held in February and October each year.  This scheduling minimises the disruption for employers during the busier periods of the retail year while giving staff an opportunity to gain a recognized educational qualification.

In addition to the in-class study blocks students will also undertake work-based learning throughout the programme and take an additional online module each semester. This method of education delivery is referred to as blended learning.

Speaking at the launch, Mary Rose Stafford, Head of the School of Business Studies at IT Tralee said: “This retail management programme is designed in response to the demand from the retail community and aims to meet the need for ongoing career development.  It was designed for industry, with the help of industry. Prior to this, Kerry-based retailers had to send staff to Dublin or Cork for training with all the attendant cost and time implications.  Now they can get their qualifications right here in Kerry.  The practical nature of the program means that participants can immediately apply their new knowledge and new ways of thinking to their work.”

Skillnet Networks in Kerry are part funding the program, paying a minimum of 25% of all student fees. The fees for the program are €3000 per annum.

South West Gnó Skillnet and IT Tralee is currently taking applications for this new programme.  The deadline for receipt of applications is December 9th. The program begins in January. For more click here

Chamber Boss Hits Out At Businesses Using Loophole To Continue Trading During Restrictions

.
Ken Tobin.

THE Tralee Chamber Alliance Chief Executive has expressed his anger at some multi-national retailers in Tralee who are continuing to trade under Level 5 Restrictions.

Ken Tobin said there is frustration amongst local retailers and other concerned business owners in Kerry, as day one of the Level 5 restrictions saw some international multiples continue to keep their doors open.

Under the latest Government restrictions only essential retail and essential services are deemed appropriate to remain open. Legislation passed last night asks that essential retailers effectively cordon off areas of their stores where non-essential goods are being sold.

Continued below…

.

However, Mr Tobin claims some businesses in Tralee and Kerry are not doing this and have by-passed the rules applied in order to continue to trade.

Speaking today, Mr Tobin said: “From early yesterday morning it became very apparent that a number of the larger multi-national stores have continued to trade, despite the fact their local competitors have closed. It seems very apparent that these multinational chain businesses have little regard for the intent behind the current restrictions and are using loopholes in the system to continue to trade with complete disregard for the community they serve,” he said

While Mr Tobin acknowledged that these retailers are significant employers in the county, he said their actions are irresponsible.

“We will be contacting with our local TDs and Minister’s English and Varadker today to highlight our concerns. We have already made contact with the Gardai who are working with us to ensure that these businesses are forced to comply with the rules set out in the new legislation which was passed late last night.”

Mr Tobin said Gardai confirmed to him that local supermarkets have been very compliant and efforts are being made to cordon off non-essential items in their stores.

“We are very impressed with the measures put in place by many local retailers to continue trading online and using click and collect services, and we have no issue with genuine cases where businesses are complying with the rules, or where they’re business model is mainly based on the supply of essential goods and services, but when there are multi-national businesses blatantly abusing the rules, its something we just cannot tolerate as it impacts on all businesses who want to reopen fully,” he continued.

“So many local shops have closed their doors to the public and have made every effort to go online, our entire tourism and hospitality sector is closed to the general public, and we must do everything we can to make sure we see all their doors reopen in December.”

“Meanwhile we have large international stores manipulating the system, that simply does not buy-in to the solidarity of spirit to protect our communities during Level5. While this short-term gain mentality will not be forgotten by the public, local businesses will be the ultimate ones to lose out,” he concluded.

Councillor Suggests Hampers Or Takeaways For Employees In Place Of Christmas Parties

.
Cllr Deirdre Ferris.

A LOCAL Sinn Féin councillor has come up with an idea for employers to treat their staff this Christmas in place of the annual party which is highly unlikely to go ahead in its traditional form this year.

Tralee Municipal District Cllr Deirdre Ferris is calling on those in the business community (who are in a position to do so) to give employees a hamper or a takeaway meal instead.

“With the likelihood that Christmas parties will not be able to proceed like normal, perhaps those employers, who are in a financial position to do so, could purchase a hamper of a mixture of local produce or pay for a take away meal for their staff in place of their Christmas party,” said Cllr Ferris.

Continued below…

.

“With the festive season on its way and small independent businesses having a very difficult year, this might be alternative that might help local businesses get through the end of the year. An incentive like this would guarantee local businesses some level of income during what should be a peak part of their year,” she added.

Cllr Ferris also believes that the creation of an online forum, where local producers and restaurants can advertise their products, would be useful.

Chamber Calls On Public To Help Save Businesses Through Support And Compliance

.
Ken Tobin of Tralee Chamber Alliance.

TRALEE Chamber Alliance is asking the people of Kerry to help save businesses by shopping local this Christmas and adhering to all public health guidelines so we can come out of Level 5 restrictions as soon as possible.

The Chief Executive, Ken Tobin, said there will be temporary and permanent job losses, particularly in the retail, hospitality and the service businesses across Kerry, because of the imposition of the Level 5.

He also said that some people did not comply with public health guidelines, resulting in a rise in cases and eventually the restoration of the lockdown.

“Acknowledging that the restrictions are all too familiar from earlier in the year, businesses are questioning why, if the majority of them complied with the restrictions on being covid-compliant, are we back in this situation once more?” said Mr Tobin.

Continued below…

.

“Why, if businesses put all that effort in to ensure the safety of their staff and customers, are they paying the price again? Why, if we have made all this effort, are we not better prepared to live with Covid?

The simple answer is not everyone in our community complied with the restrictions, not everyone used their common sense, far too many looked for loopholes and acted in disregard rather than buying into the spirit of battling this virus. Quite simply this virus was always going to come back in a second wave and we should have been better prepared. This time round it has to be different.”

This time around Tralee Chamber have a few simple messages. The first message is for everyone in the community in Tralee and Kerry to use some common sense.

Ken Tobin said the public needs to give businesses that worked so hard to trade over the past few months, the chance to reopen and also give our health service the chance to cope over the coming weeks to battle this virus.

“It is up to every single member of the public to use this chance to do things right, we need to stomp out complacency. Over the past while, the messaging from Government has caused some to be confused, but we are asking people to not look for the loopholes. Rather than waiting for clarity on the guidelines we should all show some leadership and take responsibility for ourselves,” he said.

“Our second message for people is to help us save our towns. Over the coming weeks people need to shop locally online and support those doing takeaway, and then in six weeks’ time come out again and support our hospitality and service businesses. This is not just another shop local message, for many this is an actual tipping point, if we do not act now, we are looking at an accelerated failure of our towns. If we do not act now many of these businesses in our community will not be here in a years’ time.”

The Chamber also called on the Government to ensure a rapid delivery of supports for businesses impacted by this new wave of restrictions.

They said the Covid-19 Restriction Support Scheme (CRSS) and previously announced Restart Grant top-up of 30% must be made available right now or there will be huge numbers permanently laid off in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The announced wage support increases for employees and the self-employed must be provided immediately.

Secondly, the Chamber is asking the Government to ensure the appropriate infrastructure is in place to support our local economies to re-open safely and avoid new closures in the New Year.

Finally, they are asking Government to ensure these current Level 5 restrictions serve their purpose by enforcement. They are asking for 100% compliance in Kerry during these six weeks to support the health service and to work towards a Level 2 return for businesses in Kerry rather than a Level 3 return.

Kerry Businesses Urged To Apply For Apprenticeship Incentivisation Scheme

.
Deputy Brendan Griffin.

BUSINESSES in Kerry should apply for the Apprenticeship Incentivisation Scheme which is now being extended until mid-2021, Deputy Government Chief Whip Brendan Griffin TD has said.

The Kerry Fine Gael Deputy said: “I am delighted to receive confirmation from the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD that the Apprenticeship Incentivisation Scheme is being extended for businesses to apply to it.

“So far 18  businesses in Kerry have applied for the scheme, which is designed to support employers to continue to recruit apprentices during the immediate Covid-19 period.

Continued below…

.

“It ensures that businesses who take on an apprentice are hired at €2,000 per apprentice and another €1,000 if the apprentice is still on the books for a year.

“This is a good model. It allows a person to earn and learn and allows businesses to train recruits and get some payment for it.

“Minister Harris is also developing a new Action Plan for Apprenticeship, but the scheme has offered a lifeline to many businesses seeking to take on apprentices and security for the apprentice.

“SOLAS has also moved to simplify employer access to apprenticeship through a relaunched website at www.apprenticeship.ie where employers can find information on participating in apprenticeship or, indeed, discover how to kick-off the development of new apprenticeship programmes,” Deputy Griffin concluded.

Fashion Retailer Pamela Scott To Close Tralee Outlet

.
.

FASHION Retailer Pamela Scott is to close its Tralee branch at Abbeycourt.

They have announced the closure of 12 of its 24 stores, resulting in the possible loss of 104 jobs. The company cited changes in retail trading, largely as a result of Covid-19, are reasons for the closures.

Gift vouchers, credit notes, loyalty cards and deposits will be unaffected by the closures regardless of where the vouchers were purchased.

As well as Tralee, the Pamela Scott shops being closed are Grafton Street, Frascati Centre, Swords and Blanchardstown in Dublin and Cork City, Limerick Crescent, Carlow, Sligo, Dundalk, Gorey and Nenagh.

It is applying to the High Court today to have Eamonn Richardson, a partner in restructuring at KPMG Ireland, and Ian Barrett, a director in KPMG, appointed as joint provisional liquidators.

The company’s online business, pamelascott.com, will be unaffected by the restructuring.

The restructuring will mean 104 staff may be made redundant subject to a collective redundancy process, but the company said it is confident it will secure the jobs of the remaining 90 employees.

In a statement, Richard Barron, managing director of Pamela Scott said; “Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures and we feel this is the very best way of protecting not just one of Ireland’s oldest and largest fashion chains, but the livelihoods of our remaining 90 employees.”

“When it comes to high-street retailing in general, and fashion in particular, you have to adapt or face extinction. Pamela Scott has repeatedly adapted both to changing customer tastes and to changing market conditions.”

“We are confident that this restructuring will allow us to continue to bring the very best of Irish and international fashion to our Irish customer base for many years to come,” he added.

Tralee Chamber CEO Says Budget 2021 Is A Move In The Right Direction

.

TRALEE Chamber Alliance has broadly welcomed Budget 2021 as a move in the right direction towards stimulating a recovery in the economy.

In a statement issued this afternoon, CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Ken Tobin, said the budget  makes significant progress in addressing many of the needs of the most exposed members of the business community.

“The budget delivered yesterday must be appreciated for what it is, which is to address the current crisis brought about by the impact of Covid19 and impending challenge of Brexit.”

Continued below…

“In particular, we welcome the sense of certainty delivered with the commitment by Government to extend wage supports and provide funding for businesses who are forced to close. The combination of the new reduced 9% VAT rate for the hospitality, service and tourism sectors, extension of the wage support scheme throughout next year, and the introduction of the COVID Restrictions Support Scheme is an adequately targeted response.

There are some missed opportunities in yesterday’s Budget announcements which we must continue to press for, in particular we are disappointed that the Government did not extend the commercial rate waiver into 2021.

In addition, the Budget did not address the challenge many businesses and employees are facing in adapting to a new way of working. Remote working presents an opportunity for counties like Kerry to attract new jobs and people to our county, and the current tax incentives around working from home and the supports available for employers are entirely inadequate. The lack of further supports for the Childcare sector to enable more flexible options for parents is also a challenge not addressed in this Budget.

“There is concern about the lack of available skills within the Construction sector, and while we welcome measures to increase apprenticeship supports, we would be concerned that there will not be adequate resources available to be able to deliver on all of the Governments plans.”

“We are disappointed that yesterday’s Budget failed to deliver on any of the Government’s plans for a Town First policy, which would deliver much needed investment into supporting our towns to overcome the challenges that existed pre-covid and deliver a clear strategy to ensure that our towns are supported to recover.”

“However, in saying all of that, we appreciate the challenge facing Government in delivering on every ask of the business community, and while there are missed opportunities in this Budget, the goal of Government in this Budget was to give “hope and confidence” at a time when everyone needs it most.”

21 community groups and charitable organisations have already benefited from the awards and Sean Roche, the Chairperson of Cara Credit Union’s Community Sponsorship Committee said; “Cara Credit Union is very conscious of our ethos. One way of rewarding the trust and loyalty we receive from our members is by supporting projects that can help build better communities, and add value throughout our common bond in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.”

“Our Lauri Healy Community Sponsorship Awards helps us achieve this objective with the distribution of funds used to encourage and complement the fantastic work that community groups do to make all our lives and communities a better place to live and work,” he said.

“The Sponsorship Award pledged €120,000 over a four-year period from 2017-2020. All 21 benefactors are worthy projects and we wish them every success as their projects near completion.  We are now accepting our final round of applications and would encourage community groups who are undertaking community projects of €10,000 or more to enter. Previous unsuccessful applications are also eligible to apply,” added Sean.

Pa Laide, CEO of Cara Credit Union, said; “Lauri Healy was one of Tralee Credit Union’s founding directors who dedicated so much time and energy to Tralee Credit Union. Lauri was also active in his support and development of other credit unions in Kerry and further afield.”

“He was a director with Tralee Credit Union for more than 30 years, he served with Chapter 23 for as many years and as a board member of the Irish League of Credit Unions helped shape the movement in its early days. The Lauri Healy Community Sponsorship Awards is a fitting tribute to Lauri how gave so much to his local community,” he said.

Kelliher’s Toyota Welcomes Budget Measures As Hybrids Benefit From Lower Tax

KELLIHER’S Toyota in Tralee have welcome measures in the Budget announced yesterday which will see a number of benefits for people who choose hybrids.

Ireland’s new motor tax system announced in yesterday’s budget will see new car buyers who opt for more sustainable vehicles such as hybrid electrics and EVs benefit with better value through lower VRT, while petrol and diesel cars with higher emissions will be more expensive.

One example of savings for lower emissions vehicles as an outcome of the budget is a €360 VRT reduction on Ireland’s best-selling car, the Toyota Corolla self-charging hybrid.

This saving is in addition to the 2% VAT benefit that customers who purchase a new car before Feb 28th 2021 will receive, which in the case of Corolla hybrid cumulatively adds up to €930 in tax savings overall. As such, there’s never been a better time to buy a Hybrid and save tax.

Steve Tormey, CEO of Toyota Ireland, which predominantly sells hybrid cars, said; “I welcome the introduction of the new tax bands for passenger cars proposed in today’s budget. They clearly indicate the future policy direction for Government, whereby motorists will now be increasingly rewarded for purchasing lower emitting vehicles, such as hybrid and electric, while paying more if opting for higher emission vehicles, such as diesel. We see the new VRT system as a positive impact on the car market for 2021, by giving consumers clarity about Government intentions for car purchases.”

Toyota, which uniquely moved away from the production of diesel-powered cars in 2018 to concentrate on a full hybrid strategy, says that the hybrid electric cars it sold in 2019 alone will lead to a reduction on 60,000 tonnes of carbon from the environment in their lifetime.

“By firmly committing to Hybrid for more than 20 years, while totally eliminating diesel from our range back in 2018, we in Toyota have long championed a strategy that is reflective of what we’ve seen in the 2021 budget — one which propagates a cleaner environment. Thanks to this foresight, Toyota is now the lowest CO2 mass-market brand and Irish drivers have embraced hybrid motoring as evidenced by the fact that the best-selling car in 2019 and year to date in 2020 is a hybrid (Toyota Corolla).

As a result of today’s budget, January 2021 will see a new emissions-based tax system for new cars tested under WLTP. By virtue of their comparatively low CO2 and NOx emissions, hybrids will on balance greatly benefit from the new tax regime, making them a very affordable and viable option for diesel and petrol car owners who are ready to take their first step towards cleaner, electrified motoring.

“Today’s budget is, I believe, a statement of intent from the Government of its increasing commitment to delivering policy led behavioural change in the National effort to meet reduced CO2 and NOx emission targets. It incentivises motorists, in a very practical manner by reducing the purchase price, to opt for lower emitting vehicles and in so doing provides them with a realistic opportunity to play their part in delivering improved air quality in our communities.

“While we recognise society’s move to full electrification there’s no silver bullet. Hybrid electric vehicles offer the best choice for the majority of consumers who want to pay less tax but aren’t yet ready to move into full battery powered electric cars for practical reasons. Thus, the recognition in today’s budget for the critically important role of hybrids in the new car mix, as part of the transition to zero emissions.”

Funding Of €220,000 For Dingle Creativity And Innovation Hub For Pilot Scheme

THE Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub has been awarded €220,000 EU Horizon 2020 funding to enable West Kerry to participate as a Sustainable Innovation Pilot (SIP) for the next three years.

This will see the roll-out of  sensor technology to thirty farms to achieve greater carbon, cost and labour efficiency. Increased carbon efficiency will be achieved by extending the grazing season.

Starting this October, the Dingle Hub will collaborate with Teagasc, IFA, local Dingle hub-based technology provider Net Feasa and Kerry Agribusiness to roll-out the sensor technology currently being piloted through the Farm Ambassador Project to a further thirty farms on the peninsula.

Continued below…

.

The ‘real-time’ data collected describes current and predicted weather and soil conditions, grass growth rates and key environmental indicators.

This data will be analysed and used to develop models and effective decision-support tools for farmers and to add value to a range of products and services, e.g.

• using good environmental parameters in marketing goods from the area;
• localised ‘real-time’ weather data enabling providers to tailor tourist packages optimised for changing weather conditions;
• building a trusted brand for the Dingle Peninsula to secure the region as a destination of choice for the sustainably conscious visitor supported by data proving low food miles and low carbon footprint.

This SIP will integrate farming enterprises with related value chains, such as agri-tourism and/or food tourism, through enabling farmers to work with technology providers, data analysts and marketing teams.

It is hoped that facilitating collaborations across the value chain will support and enable co-created, innovative solutions to both address climate change and support the financial viability of farms.

The project aims to:

1. Market products using data from the sensor technologies, specifically, for:

• farms initiating new agri-tourism industries;
• enabling evidence based tourism focused advertising for low food miles and low carbon footprint for food on the Dingle peninsula;
• building a sustainable brand for the peninsula;

2. Roll-out the technology to an additional thirty farms, incentivised by greater value for product and greater carbon, cost and labour efficiency. Specifically, increased carbon efficiency will be achieved by extending the grazing season; for every 10-day extension in grazing season there is a 1.7% decrease in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It is anticipated that the grazing season could be extended by 10 days on the Dingle peninsula through good grassland management achieved through use of the sensor technology. This 10-day extension of grazing will also mean increased profit for the farmer; for every 10-day extension in grazing season, profit is increased by 27 Euro per dairy cow.

The Dingle Hub will be advertising Expressions of Interest in the coming months for members of the farming community who wish to get involved in the SIP. Those who wish to pre-register their interest can do so by emailing info@dinglehub.com.

Kerry LEO’s Student Enterprise Awards To Be Delivered Online

.
.

STUDENT entrepreneurs across Kerry have begun their journey in this year’s Student Enterprise Programme, with eyes on next year’s National Final.

This Kerry Local Enterprise Office run programme will be delivered differently given the current restrictions across the country, and the Final, which will take place on Friday, May 14, 2021, will be a virtual one.

The students, who will compete across three categories, Junior, Intermediate and Senior, will see judging take place virtually via electronic submissions.

Continued below…

.

Each student enterprise is challenged with creating, setting up and running their own business, which must show sales of their service or product.

The programme will also include two additional categories that students can enter.  These are the “Most Creative Business Idea” video competition for the senior category and the “My Entrepreneurial Journey” category for the Junior and Intermediate categories.

Over 700 students from 25 secondary schools in Kerry took part in last year’s Programme.  The enterprise education initiative, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, saw over 25,000 students from over 500 secondary schools across the country take part last year.

This is 18th year of Ireland’s largest secondary school entrepreneurship programme and has seen over 200,000 students take part since it began.  The Final usually takes place in Croke Park but in 2021, as with the 2020 Final earlier this year, the event will take place online in line with current guidelines.

Kerry Local Enterprise Office has had much previous success in the competition and Kerry entrants excelled in the 2020 competition taking home 4 National Awards.

The National Winner of the Go Green Competition was Kieran Spaight from Tarbert Comprehensive School with Cycle Away CO2; Eimear Harrington from ISK Killorglin was runner up in The Junior Cycle My Entrepreneurial Journey with Soil Sauna; Castleisland Community College were again victorious with their Intermediate entry Sala Síos receiving runner up prize and also received third place for their Junior  entry Castaway.

Tomas Hayes, Kerry Local Enterprise Office said; “These are unprecedented times for our students and this year’s competition is giving them the opportunity to create businesses that can make an impact in the current real-world scenario.  We are encouraging students to come up with business ideas that are adapted to the existing enterprise challenges and that are sustainable in today’s economic climate.  With this in mind the programme has changed and even though the way it is being delivered (which is mainly online), is different, the students will still be able to work together in their school setting to develop their businesses.  This will be our most challenging year to date in the Student Enterprise Programme’s history, but it will be exciting to see what new world businesses our students bring to the table.”

Since the Student Enterprise Programme began in 2003, over 200,000 students have taken part, learning key skills on how to create a business idea, start a business and grow a business.

The Student Enterprise Programme also has new range of online resources for 2020 / 2021 at www.StudentEnterprise.ie, which will feature regular blogs and houses a full range of Student Enterprise resources for students and teachers.
