THE IT Tralee Students’ Union will be holding a sit-in protest on campus on Thursday in response to what they describe as unsatisfactory library hours which are having a direct effect on the student experience in the college.

“IT Tralee is currently riding high on the crest of a wave that was created on the announcement of €7.5m euros being awarded for the creation of a Sports Academy,” said Ben Slimm IT Tralee SU President. “However the Institute is currently refusing to directly invest in the provision of student facilities such as the library.”

“This is having a direct effect on the quality of education the students can achieve when they cannot access a quiet area to study after 6pm,” he said.

The IT Tralee Library is currently open 9am to 8pm Monday – Wednesday, 9am to 6pm Thursday, 9-5pm on Fridays and 10am-2pm on Saturdays.

He further said; “It is worth noting that other Institutes of Technology have much better access to library facilities; such as the IT Carlow Library which is open from 8:45am to 10pm Monday to Friday and the Letterkenny IT Library which is open from 9am to 9pm Monday to Thursday and 9-5pm Fridays.”

The Students’ Union say they will continue to lobby and protest against the library hours and will increase its action until the Institute management commit to opening the library until at least 9pm Monday to Thursday.
