Na Gaeil Ladies    We played in Portmarnock in the Mothers and Others All Ireland Blitz on Saturday. Weather conditions were great  in Dublin. This was our 3rd year travelling to the Blitz and we had a few debutantes for this year’s Blitz.

Mná Na Gaeil and Saval from Co Down Mothers and Others Teams from All Ireland Blitz in Portmarnock

The 1st team we played were St Colmcilles from Meath. We started brightly with a point from Yvonne followed by another one from Caroline. Amy found Susan to score our 1st  goal of the day.

Colmcilles did score 3 good points but defenders Siobhan, Janice and Blaithnaid protected Anna in goals. Heather and Helen Sugrue were unlucky not to get a point each. Erris came on and scored a goal and a point before points from Yvonne and Amy sealed our 1st win.

Our 2nd game was against Curry from Sligo. Curry scored an early couple of points before Geraldine won the ball to set up Yvonne for a point. Then Erris  combined with Jacqui to score a goal to put us back in the lead. With some strong defending from Janice, Helen Cooper and Anne Marie (Schillaci) Burke, we finished with another win.

We played Man O’ War from Dublin in our 3rd game. This was going to be a tight game as these were a strong team but with Eileen and Yvonne in midfield allowed Goal Machine Erris to get forward and score 2 early goals.

Sharon had a shot that was saved by the keeper before Debra grazed the post to deny her a goal. Caroline weaved in and out to create space to score a point after great work from Amy and Geraldine.

Mary Ross fought her way out from the backs, passed to Yvonne who scored a great point from distance. This was a great win and we can’t wait to see Deirdre’s camera work!

Our 4th game was against friends and foe Quarry Blues from Macroom. There is fierce rivalry between us as we are always grouped together.

Geraldine nearly got the 1st score after Helen and Heather set her up but her shot went narrowly wide. But points from Caroline, Yvonne and Erris got us settled after defenders Janice and Susan broke out from the backs with the ball. Blaithnaid found Eileen with a great kick pass which Eileen dropped over the bar. Quarry Blues came back at us but great defending again from Blaithnaid, Mary Ross, Susan, Helen Cooper and Schillaci kept Quarry Blues from getting any score.

Mná Na Gaeil Mothers and Others Blitz Portmarnock

Our final game was against Saval from Co. Down. We were both unbeaten going into this game. We scored early points from Susan, Erris and Yvonne but Saval were a strong Northern team.

Debra, Amy and Sharon were defending from the front as we were trying to hold onto our lead.  As Anna had not conceded a goal thoughout the Blitz and had to make a couple of good saves to keep them goalless, we wanted to finish the Blitz without conceding a goal with Siobhan, Schillaci and Janice being quite physical to keep it possible.

As the tired legs were starting to kick in, Mary Ross, Blaithnaid and Helen Cooper came into the backs with Eileen and Geraldine coming into midfield to help shore up our defence. Heather, Jacqui and Helen came into the forwards. Saval were putting the pressure on our backs but we held tough and with great support from the sideline, we held Saval to 1 point for the entire game.

As the game was coming to an end, Anne Marie Schillaci Burke found Geraldine who passed into the box to Jacqui, the whistle was blown for a penalty and Deirdre came on to dispatch the ball into the bottom corner for our last score of the Blitz.

It was a fantastic day and weekend for those that travelled to Dublin. Thanks to Mary Sheehy for her camera work for the games. A special thanks to Siobhan and Caroline for the work they put into organising the weekend.
