Seniors:  Na Gaeil hosted Scartaglin in Killeen, Oakpark on Sunday. Weather conditions were perfect for football and both teams served up an entertaining game. Na Gaeil opened the scoring after 3 minutes with a well worked goal. Dylan Seymour cut through the Scart defence and passed the ball across the square to Jamie Lowham who palmed the ball to the net. 5 minutes later Scart had their first score, a well taken point from their midfielder Mike Coakely. Dylan Seymour got Na Gaeil’s next point.

Then Scartaglen were dealt a severe blow when they lost Padraig Reidy through injury. He was replaced by Sean Tagney.

On 16 minutes Na Gaeil’s Andrew Barry palmed the ball over the bar after a good run down the left wing to leave the score at 1.02 for Na Gaeil  0.01 for Scart.

Mike Griffin had the next point for Na Gaeil and this was cancelled out by a great effort from Scartaglin’s Denis Linehan on 22 minutes. This began a purple patch for Scartagiin with Mike Coakley scoring 0-1 and Daniel Murphy scoring 0-2 to leave the score at 1.03 to 0.05 for Na Gaeil. Then Jack Barry and Dara Carmody(free) had points for the home side to leave the half time score Na Gaeil 1.05 Scartaglin 0.05

Dara Carmody opened the scoring for Na Gaeil in the 2nd half with a 21 metre free on 33 minutes. Then Scart struck for a goal on 35 minutes. A long ball into the square  was not dealt with by the Na Gaeil defence. It broke to Brian Hanrahan who finished it to the net.  Na Gaeil 1.06 Scart 1.05. Dara Carmody pointed a free for Na Gaeil and this was cancelled out with a good point from Daniel Murphy from 35 metres. Mike Griffin had a point for the home side on 40 minutes.

On 43 minutes Scart struck for a second goal again through Brian Hanrahan. Another ball broke in the square. Na Gaeil failed to clear their lines   and Hanrahan calmly stroked it to the net. Scart were now ahead for the first time in the game. 2.06 to 1.08

This defensive error seemed to ignite Na Gaeil and they scored the next 4 points without reply through Dara Carmody, Jack Barry, Mike Griffin and Seamie O Neill.

Then two goals in quick succession from Mike Griffin and Dylan Seymour ended the game as a contest. Scart added points through Linehan and Murphy to leave the final score Na Gaeil 3.12  Scartaglin 2.08.

The Na Gaeil team played well as a unit and supported each other very well. Dylan Brazil was solid at full back and Andrew Barry made some great runs from wing back. Jack Barry and Seamie O Neill won the midfield battle.

Shane Carey had an excellent game at centre forward with some pin point foot passing to his fellow forwards. Mike Griffin and Dara Carmody tormented their markers and got some great scores. Dylan Seymour and Eoin Walsh worked tirelessly in the half forward line.

Na Gaeil Ladies

Na Gaeil Ladies v Castleisland Desmonds, 1st Round Div 1 County League

We played our 1st game of the year away to a strong Castleisland side. With Lorraine Scanlan towering over everyone, they were strong on the kickouts and got off to a flying start scoring 4 quick points.

We were a bit sluggish and rusty but we came back into it with Maria fielding some great ball. Eilis got forward and scored a goal to get us back into it.

Castleisland followed with another couple of points before Jadyn and Erika got a goal apiece. Castleisland came back at us, scoring a goal and a point. Laura made a couple of great saves the few times the full forwards got past Niamh, Sarah Quigley and Susan but Maria finished the 1st half with a point and despatching a well taken penalty, leading by a point.

We lost Kate Anne at half time but we started the 2nd half brightly with Sarah Cunningham scoring 3 points and Meagan scoring 2 points and Eilis being set up by Ayesha for a point. Castleisland never stopped despite the efforts of Deirdre and Nora. Ayesha who worked tirelessly had to come into midfield to replace Maria. Aine was being marked tightly in full forward.

Caoimhe and Blaithnaid came into the forward line but Castleisland came back at us and had a very strong finish as the Na Gaeil legs started to tire. Clodagh came into the backs for her debut.

With a couple of disputable decisions at the end, we lost by a point. But a great performance was given by a very young side playing in Div 1. We were unlucky to come away with a defeat here.
