Na Gaeil GAA Club News

Na GaeilSeniors   The seniors had no game at the weekend. They play Anascaul in the Premier Junior quarter final. This game is at home and will possibly be on next weekend May 7th/8th . This will be a tough assignment for Na Gaeil and your support would be appreciated.

Minors   We played Austin Stacks on Sunday last in our long awaited Town Board back game and with 10 squad players missing, it was always going to be a damage limitation exercise. The lads did really well for the duration of the game (including 3 U16 and 1 U15 player) against a full Stacks squad but went down 2-05 to 3-11 in the end.

This marked our last minor activity both for players and coaches and we all will now take a deserved rest until after the junior and leaving cert exams.

The management would like to note the dedication and commitment to the team by a very busy squad of players and look forward to getting group training going again in mid June for the Central Region and Brendan’s Championship competitions.

The victorious County League winning minor team visited its sponsors on Wednesday last at Meadowlands Hotel and Leahy’s Pharmacy where a carnival atmosphere was enjoyed by all. Thank you to our sponsors.

U 14   Na Gaeil travelled to Beaufort last Wednesday to play the local team in the fifth round of the County League. Na Gaeil opened the scoring with the first point of the game but Beaufort immediately replied with their first score.

The teams exchanged the next two scores before Na Gaeil got the next three points. Beaufort soon got back in the game with a goal and two points to take the lead for the first time in the game. However Na Gaeil immediately struck back with their first goal of the game and dominated the next ten minutes and scored another goal and three points to open a seven point lead.

As the game approached half time Beaufort got their second goal to get back into the game and Na Gaeil replied with a point just before the half time whistle to leave the half time score Na Gaeil 2-9 Beaufort 2-4.

Beaufort opened the scoring in the second period but Na Gaeil were soon back in control after scoring a goal and two points to extend their lead. At this stage it looked like Na Gaeil would go on and win the game comfortably but the home team had other ideas.

Beaufort scored three points in a row and then got their third goal of the game to reduce the deficit to three points. However Na Gaeil regained control of the game and got the final three scores of the game to leave the final score Na Gaeil 3-14 Beaufort 3-8.

The result means Na Gaeil finish the group section of the league unbeaten with four wins and a draw. The next game in the county league is a semi-final against Ballymac which has been provisionally scheduled for Tuesday May 10th at 7pm in Ballymac. All support would be appreciated. This will be a tough assignment and should be a cracking game of football. We will be training this Thursday at 6.30pm to prepare for this semi final. Keep it going now lads.

Well done to Enda O Connor who will represent Na Gaeil at the Starskills competition in Mitchel’s this Thursday at 6.30pm. Tom Walsh was first runner up.

We have also qualified for the final of the St Brendan’s League and are waiting on the result of the Churchill v John Mitchel’s game which will determine our final opponents. There is no date set for this final but panel will be notified once fixture is agreed by the board.

Panel: S Daly, S Ryan, J O’Sullivan, P Walsh, L Kingston, E O’Connor, D Moriarty, J Bourke, J Sheehan, J Fitzgerald Burns, G Sheehy, C Devine, T Reen, T Hanifan, M Burke, T Walsh, E Sheehy, O Maunsell,  J Roche.

U 12   Castlegregory provided the opposition on Sunday last for our 5th Round County League encounter in Killeen. With a strong cross field wind blowing it made scoring opportunities difficult for both side but Na Gaeil eventually got the scores on the board including two goals in either half by Cillian Murphy and Nathan Rodgers. Castlegregory contributed to a good open game of football and at the final whistle Na Gaeil were worthy winners on a scoreline of 4.08 to 2.04.

Team: Sean Barrett, Aaron Delahunty, Sean O Connor, Sean O Connell, Kieran O Connor, Rory Reen, Cian Sheahan, Cian O Neill, Edward Sheehy, Jack Dakissia, Shane Kelly, Jack Doyle, Nathan Rodgers, Batty Coffey, Cillian Murphy.

Training continues Thursday evening at 6.30 pm.
