Know Your Rights: Broken Engagements

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Question: My fiancé broke off our engagement – we had spent a lot on wedding preparations – can I get this money back from them?

Answer: An engagement is not a legally binding contract, but if there is a dispute between the couple or a third party over property or finances, they can take legal action.

If you paid out substantial expenses in preparation for your wedding but it is cancelled, you can ask your ex-fiancé to reimburse you. If they refuse, you can apply to the courts for compensation from them.

Continued below…

.

What if I gave a gift to my ex-fiancé(e)?

There is a presumption that gifts (such as an engagement ring) will be returned, if requested. This only applies to gifts given during the engagement. You can contest this presumption in court if you have proof to say otherwise.

What if I gave a gift to a couple when they got engaged but they are now splitting up?

It is presumed that the gift will be returned (if requested) if the marriage does not take place for any reason, including death.

Finnegan On Films: A Selection For All Tastes On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, says there is a good selection of movies on TV this weekend…

There is a nice variety of film styles and genres in this Saturdays’s film selection to take our mind off the sad and desperate events happening elsewhere.

Not for the first time, but perhaps the best of its type, Sing (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is an animal animated version of a talent show format that is a lot of fun.

Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) is a Koala Bear theatre owner who is under pressure from the banks.

He has one last chance – a talent show – that captures the imagination of the anthropomorphic citizens of Calatonia.  What can possibly go wrong? Well, that’s the plot.

Continued below…

.

As in the real life versions, all the contestants are “on a journey” and are facing their own challenges.

This can be watched by all the family, with an inspiring story of fighting against the odds for the smallies, and a lot of quite delightful sight gags for the adults.

The animation is universally wonderful, and with a voice cast including Scarlett Johansson, Reese Whiterspoon, Seth McFarlane, Taron Egerton and Jennifer Hudson among other, this is well worth sitting down to watch.

The Da Vinci Code (Saturday 9.30pm RTE2) is based on the best selling Dan Brown novel.  It is a rattling good yarn, beloved by the public, hated by the critics so naturally was bound to come to the cinema screen.

Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is a Harvard Professor of Religious Symbology and is the prime suspect in the murder of the Curator of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

With the help and assistance of Police Cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), he escapes and they team up to find the real murderer, as well as the Holy Grail by deciphering clues left by Leonardo da Vinci – as you do!

Hot on their heels is a sinister assassin monk, Opus Dei, the Illuminati and, oh yes, the Police (The law enforcement version rather than Sting’s group, but it could go either way).  If you like your Conspiracy Theories, this is right down your street.

Directed by Ron Howard and with a supporting cast, all wearing their serious faces, including Ian McKellen, Paul Bettany, Alfred Molina, Jean Reno and Jurgen Prochnow, you might need to suspend your more quizzical faculties for a few hours and just enjoy the ride.

Changing tack entirely Miss Pettigrew Lives for A Day (Saturday 11.45pm TG4) is a romantic comedy set in London just before World War Two.

A middle-aged, straitlaced Vicar’s daughter and Governess Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) has just lost her fourth job and her employment agency will do no more for her.

She has left the office with a potential new post meant for another.  What she does not know is that American Singer Actress Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams) is looking for a social secretary rather than a governess, especially as she is involved with three different suitors at the same time. Enjoy and stay safe.

Sponsored: Hair Restoration Treatments At The CHRC

.

Mary O’Donnell on the Hair Restoration Treatment at the Cosmetic And Hair Restoration Clinic at the Bon Secours…

THINNING hair is something that affects 70% of men and hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause.

If this is affecting you and you want to take action, at CHRC we recommend that you talk with our doctor to identify the cause of your hair loss and discuss treatment options.

If a hair restoration procedure is the best solution for you, there is a huge EU trend now on hair restoration that is minimally invasive.

At CHRC, we use the only robotic system in the country, ARTAS ix, to provide a minimally invasive, precision hair restoration procedure called follicular unit extraction (FUE).

Using FUE we use your own hair follicles from the back or sides of your head where your hair may be thicker and transplant these tiny follicles to the areas you wish to thicken.

It’s important to point out that results from hair restoration take time, this is not an overnight fix as your hair grows in cycles.

Results will depend on the individual; if your hair grows quickly you are likely to get a faster result, but it can take 6-9 months at minimum to see a great result. But the good thing is you will still look yourself while your hair grows.

To discuss any queries on hair restoration please contact us at CHRC on 086 0786120 to speak with Nicole or one of our team about the option that is best for you.

THEY’RE back!

After a break of two years, members of Tralee’s Zyber Theatre Group will once again take to the Siamsa Tíre stage next month for a number of performances of ‘Barndance’.

The last Zyber production was ‘The Field’ back in March 2020, just before the pandemic started, so cast members are eagerly looking forward to the run.

Rehearsals are in full swing for the production of founder member of Zyber, John Fraher’s acclaimed comedy which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Continued below…

.

‘Barndance’ is a play close to John’s heart and it has been performed by many theatre groups in the Munster area.

“The Ardagh Drama Group did a production of it back in the mid-2000s on the drama festival circuit and got to the All-Ireland finals, eventually winning various categories,” said John.

“A lot of rural drama groups did it around Cork and Kerry and it was very popular. However, it has been a bit forgotten about but we decided to revive it for the 25th anniversary,” he said.

Playwright John Fraher (seated right) with original cast members of ‘Barndance’ Mags Slattery, John Scroope and Ken Quillinan who took part in the production 25 years ago and take part again this March. Photo by Dermot Crean

There’s also a link back to the inaugural production of 25 years ago, with the return of original cast members Mags Slattery, Ken Quillinan and John Scroope.

‘Barndance’ tells the story of Barney Kelly, a shy bachelor farmer, lives with his father and a maiden aunt. On the completion of a new barn, Barney is persuaded, unwillingly, to go into town that night to celebrate the occasion.

In the course of the day and night that follow, the back stories of the characters involved are revealed with both humour and pathos.

The play will be performed at Siamsa Tire nightly on Wednesday, March 9, Thursday, March 10 and Friday, March 11 at 8pm.

Tickets are €19, Retired/Unemployed/Students €17. To book tickets call 066-7123055 or go to the Siamsa website by clicking here to book online.

Cllr Appeals To Public After Historic Discovery In Tralee Building

.
The slate found in a building on The Mall recently.

A LOCAL councillor is hoping there are untold stories in relation to the War of Independence/Civil War period waiting to be discovered after the an historic find in the town recently.

Sinn Féin Cllr Deirdre Ferris asking for the public’s assistance after the discovery of a slate in a building on The Mall, containing what appears to be details of Morse Code, which was widely used at the time, particularly in the transmission of confidential information.

The slate is headed up with the words ‘Brigade Commandant’, which she believes indicates that it probably relates to the 1918-23 period.

Continued below…

.

This may shed light on a lesser-known aspect of Tralee Volunteers’ contribution to the war against British Crown Forces, a century ago.

Cllr Deirdre Ferris says that there may be other equally interesting stories that remain untold in relation to the history of the Revolutionary period of 1916-1921.

She is asking for the public’s assistance in uncovering further such historical gems that may be lying undiscovered within older buildings in Tralee and across the county.

Local historian, Martin Moore, has said that the inscribed slate could relate to the training of Volunteers in Morse Code.

Another possibility, given the location of the find, is that some IRA member was intercepting coded messages being sent between Crown Forces who then occupied key positions in the town, including the Police Barracks, the Jail at Ballymullen, Denny Street and the Technical School at Moyderwell.

Cllr Ferris is looking for anyone with similar stories from those eventful times, including those passed down from family members, to share them so that a fuller understanding can be gained of what was the most historically significant period of the country’s history.

Cllr Ferris said: “Kerry and Tralee are steeped in Republican history and activities and with the assistance of the public, perhaps even more significant finds are out there, yet to be discovered.”

Lacey Cup Cycling Race Returns To Tralee Next Month

.

THE 68th edition of the Lacey Cup hosted by Tralee Manor West Bicycle Club will be held on Sunday, March 6.

As is customary, the Lacey Cup will be the grand opener to the Munster road racing season.

The challenging 75km circuit always lends itself to aggressive racing with cyclists eager to test themselves and to show some good early season form. The race always draws a large field of riders, with over 200 competing in recent years.

Continued below…

.

Some of Ireland’s top riders will be in action on the day, all intent on taking home the coveted Lacey Cup. Tralee Manor West Bicycle Club will also offer a generous prize fund of €1,200.

As per Cycling Ireland rules, the A4 race will be run separately to the main A1/A2/A3 race. Manor West Hotel, sponsors of the Tralee Manor West Bicycle Club will be the venue and headquarters for the races.

The races will have a single 5km neutralised start from Manor West Hotel. Departure from the hotel will be at 12:15pm sharp.

This year due to road works along the canal, racing will officially commence from Blennerville at 12.35 and will pass through Camp (13.00), Upper Camp, Gleann na nGealt (13.10), Annascaul (13.25), Inch (13.30), Boolteens (13.50), Castlemaine (13.55), Sliabh Mish (14.05) and finishing at 14.15 at the 60kph speed sign opposite Skehanagh Cross on the Killorglin road in Tralee.

The main A1/A2/A3 race is run on a handicap basis consisting of 3 groups with the first group of A3 category riders, followed by the A2 category riders, and finally the group of elite A1 category riders.

The separate A4 race will start approximately 5 mins after the A1 riders are underway and will follow the same race route.

The first prime of the race is Gleann na nGealt and will likely be hotly contested between the A3 riders.

Following Gleann na nGealt, the A1 and A2 groups will work hard to catch the race leaders as they head towards Inch. After Castlemaine the riders will climb Sliabh Mish mountain and contest the second prime for The Teddy Griffin Memorial Cup. Sliabh Mish mountain is usually where the race is broken up into a small group of elite A1 and A2 riders, with the expected winner coming from these groups.

Entry fee is €20 and registration is online only. Link to register: https://eventmaster.ie/event/LvOWFp3H76

It all promises to be an exciting days racing with plenty of exciting action along the route to keep spectators entertained. Presentation of prizes will be at Manor West Hotel. For further event information please email traleebc.secretary@gmail.com

The Kerry badminton grade C, E, and G teams played in UL on Sunday the 20th February for the Munster Inter-County Championship.
The Grade C team played Tipperary first, it was a very close result but unfortunately Tipperary came out on top with a 5-4 win. Kerry then went on to play Cork but Cork beat them 6 games to 2.

The Grade E team had a very successful day, playing Tipperary first and beating them 6-3. They then went on to play Cork and Kerry had a very impressive win of 9 games to 0. Their win against both teams put them into the final where they would play Clare. It was a very close match but Kerry kept their heads and beat Clare 6 games to 3 putting them through to the All-Ireland final.

Our last team of the day was the Grade Gs. They played Tipperary first and although all matches were very close, Tipperary came out on top with a 5-4 win. The Kerry team then beat Limerick 5 games to 4.

As Limerick had beaten Tipperary with a score of 5-4 as well, the scores were now even and it all came down to sets to see who got through to the final to play Waterford. Unfortunately for Kerry, Limerick won on sets, putting them through to the final.

Imperials kept a strong hold throughout despite St Joseph’s best efforts.

Excellent shooting and superb team work led to a great win.

Final score 31 to 11.

Top scorers: Abby Crowley 8 points

U12 GIRLS T2

Tralee Imperials 20-12 KCYMS (19/02/22)

Well done to Tralee Imperials u12 girls who came out the victors in a tough game vs. KCYMS.

It was neck in neck in the first quarter with both teams scoring 6 points each. Imperials baskets coming from Yvie Ross, Lily Mai Bowler and Kaela Reidy.

Imperials had a strong 2nd quarter scoring 4 points to KCYMS no score. Baskets coming from Olivia Crean and Ava Flaherty.

Imperials took off in the 3rd quarter with 3 baskets from Lily Mai, and a basket each for Roisin Reidy and Sarah Slattery, keeping KCYMS scoreless in this quarter.

Final score Tralee Imperials 20 KCYMS 12.

This was a great team effort and this game will definitely stand to the girls. All players worked extremely hard on the court.

Well done girls.

U14 Boys T1

U14 BOYS T1

Rathmore Ravens 36-23 Tralee Imperials (20/02/22)

Q1  Rathmore 13-2 Tralee Imperials

Q2 Rathmore  29-4 Tralee Imperials

Q3  Rathmore  34-16 Tralee Imperials

Q4  Rathmore  36-23 Tralee Imperials

Tralee found it hard to settle into the game with Rathmore having a significant height advantage and were trailing 29 points to 4 at halftime.

The boys worked hard in the second half with some very good defence from Eoghan Crowley and Rodhan Culloo causing a few turnovers and helping Tralee get some badly needed scores on the board.

Unfortunately, the 25 point margin at half-time was too much to make up and they were chasing the game throughout.

They played really well in both quarters of the second half and will have learned a lot from this game on how to play to their strengths that will benefit them in their next fixture.

Scorers: Ruairi Kennedy 7, Conor McGibney 6, Eoghan Crowley & Justin O Halloran 4, Eoghan Murphy 2.

U14 Girls T1 with sponsors J.F. Flynn Construction

Our U14 Girls Team 2 continued their season on Wednesday evening at CBS The Green against TK Bobcats. Imperials were looking to maintain their good form with 7 wins from 8 on the board.

The game was a close encounter with scores at a premium, and both defences on top. Imperials began the game under pressure from a TK Bobcats side that were breaking fast. Katie Enright was having a great quarter for Imperials with multiple defensive rebounds and strong carries.

Katie and Abbey Stephenson combined well, and found Maria Walsh in space to open the Imperials account. Juliette Gleeson added to the Imperials score line with a great finish, after collecting an offensive rebound.

TK Bobcats with a narrow 6 – 4 lead at the end of quarter 1.

The 2nd quarter began well for TK Bobcats who were defending well and transitioning at pace. They added some early scores on the board to give them a slender advantage. Imperials responded as they always do with good team work and 100% effort. Strong running from Grace Reilly found Aoife O’Connell with Aoife duly obliging. Grace followed up with a brilliant effort after a great run from deep. Caoilainn Culloo was working hard and added a brilliant score, giving Imperials the advantage as the quarter progressed. The final score of the quarter fell to Grace Reilly, who finished well, after great work by Keelin Reidy.

The sides all square at 12 – 12 at the end of quarter 2.

Quarter 3 again began well for TK Bobcats with Imperials struggling to cope with the sustained pressure. Bobcats added to the scoreboard to move into the lead, and put some distance between the teams. Imperials were working hard and creating opportunities, but the final shots just not sticking.

Grace Reilly opened the Imperials account with a great layup after strong defensive work. Grace again added to the Imperials account moments later, after great work by Maria O’Connell. The final score of the quarter fell to Amber Ryan who carried magnificently and finished in style.

TK Bobcats continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over and extended the lead to 4. TK Bobcats with a 22 – 18 lead at the end of quarter 3.

The 4th quarter was end to end basketball with strong defensive work from both teams. Scores were again at a premium with both sides finding it difficult to finish. Sarah Slattery opened the Imperials account in quarter 4 with a brilliant long range effort, moving Imperials to within 2 of the opposition.

TK Bobcats again capitalised on a fast break and extended the advantage to 4, late in the quarter. With a score line of 24 – 20 entering the final minutes, Imperials rallied.

Sarah Slattery carried well and drew the foul. Sarah added 1 from the free throw line to reduce the deficit to 3. Aoife O’Connell added a great basket for the home side with a brilliant effort, after sustained Imperials pressure.

A score line of 24 – 23 with 1:22 on the clock. Imperials mounted attack after attack but great defensive work from Bobcats kept them at bay. Imperials got the final shot off with 2.2 seconds on the clock but it was not to be, TK Bobcats took the win on a final score line of 24-23.

WHILE the Christmas or Summer holidays are the normal times for Debs Balls, the past two years have been anything but normal.

The students from Mercy Mounthawk were unable to hold their debs at Christmas due to COVID restrictions, so the mid-term break proved an opportune time to get together to enjoy a well-earned night out.

The Ballyroe Heights Hotel was the venue for a stylish night out with over 240 glammed-up guests attending. Scroll down for photos…

GOLF CLASSIC: Rockie golfers and supporters gathered in The Brogue Inn on Sunday evening for the launch of the 2022 Austin Stacks Golf Classic which takes place on Friday 25 th March in Tralee Golf Club.

Speaking at the launch, Austin Stacks Chairman Shane Lynch said that “The Rock has a long and storied history of golf fundraising events and this year’s edition promises to be our biggest yet.

As we emerge from Covid restrictions, the Golf Classic provides our fabulous supporters with a fantastic day out at the magnificent Barrow links course and an opportunity to celebrate our Senior Team’s hugely successful 2021 campaign which culminated in our 13th County Championship title and the return of the Bishop Moynihan Cup to the Rock”.

Shane remarked that this year’s Golf Classic is a hugely important part of Austin Stacks’ fundraising campaign to generate much-needed finances required for the club’s pitch upgrade programme and to alleviate the costs of the Senior Team’s County and Munster Championship campaigns.

He added: “like all GAA clubs, our fundraising capability was adversely impacted by the Pandemic and we now call on all our supporters and on keen golfers in the Kingdom and beyond to get behind this fabulous event and help Austin Stacks finance the next wave of development in the club”.

At the launch, which was attended by several of the County Championship winning team, Shane thanked the club’s Golf Classic committee who have worked tirelessly over the past number of months to make the event a reality, and also to Tralee Golf Club for hosting the event.

In addition to playing one of the best links courses in the world, teams of four will play for some fantastic prizes including a draw on the day for four All Ireland Football Final tickets.

Full details of the Austin Stacks Golf Classic are available on the club’s website at

Both sides had a point each and a wide each during the first half. Conor Myers was our scorer from play.

Mitchels just shaded the second half, scoring three points to our two. Gearóid Sheehan scored our second point from play in the 42nd minute and our third and last score coming from a David Mannix free in the 55th minute.

Team: Wayne Guthrie (Capt),  Luke Chester, Barry Walsh, Ruairí O’Connell, Niall Fitzmaurice, Donagh McMahon, Eoghan Carroll, David Fitzmaurice, Dara Barry Walsh, Conor Horan, Gearóid Sheehan (0-1), Andrew Morrissey, Donagh McKivergan, David Mannix (0-1 free), Conor Myers (0-1).

And on football let us congratulate our four players who were on the Kerry U20 squad at the week-end – Adam Curran, Armin Heinrich, Joey Nagle and Jordan Kissane.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Our opening two rounds of the Town League, against Ardfert and Ballymac, fell foul of the inclement weather with the third round against Churchill also to be played.

We are also away in round 2 against Laune Rangers (12th March). LIDL PLUS STAMP CARDS REWARD SCHEME Calling the senior , juveniles and ladies sections of our club… we , the ladies could do with your support. If you shop in Lidl, please try and help us out. Lidl are supporting Ladies Gaelic Football clubs again from February 7th to March 27th.

This promotion could earn us in Ladies club anything from a set of Jerseys to €5,000 in cash, depending on the support from club members. If 50 people complete a “card” for the club, it would give us a set of jerseys with further rewards to be earned depending on how many support us…. a few of the younger teams could do with a new set of jerseys, what they have is fairly threadbare now … A card is made up of 6 stamps with each stamp being earned by a spend of €30 on your shopping.

There is no limit to the amount of cards that can be earned by an individual. We would really appreciate your support when you’re doing your shopping (and maybe encourage friends and family to get involved too!) Full details of how to sign up for this promotion are on the link below: https://www.lidl.ie/serious-support

This can only be paid online through the GAA’s Foireann website at www.Foireann.ie – this is the same website where the health questionnaires were filled out before training and matches last year. Karon will be in touch with you shortly.

Condolences Tom Begley

A huge air of sadness descended over Strand Road last evening when the news of the very sudden passing of one of our most esteemed and most loved members, Tom Begley came to be known,

Tom, a native of Ballydavid, became involved with our juveniles when he started working as a newly qualified teacher in The CBS Primary in Clounalour in the early 1980s. He stayed training our U10s on Saturday mornings for many years after his two sons, Pat and Tommy (both senior club players) progressed beyond this age group as footballers. He later joined our senior executive and was one of its most active workers for many years right until his untimely death.

He served along with Mike Mangan as lotto coordinator for the last 7 years and he ran our weekly lotto so professionally making sure that tickets were collected every Monday evening from Rock St. PO and from retail outlets selling our lotto. He had everything in order every Monday night to ensure eachand every draw was run off honestly and efficiently.

Tom also kept the shrubbery area at the entrance to Strand Road verywell maintained. On match days in Strand Road he always gave a hand either selling lotto tickets or directing traffic for parking.

He was a great supporter of our Club Bar where he frequented every weekend and Tom was in top form when socialising post lockdown in the Club bar especially when he saw the huge numbers of members that were supporting the bar once more.

Tom will be remembered as one of the best volunteers that our club has ever had and An Ghaeltacht’s loss was most definitely a huge gain for Kerins O’ Rahillys.

He was very unassuming and never wanted recognition or credit for anything he did for us,just always wanting to turn his attention to what he could do next for the Club. He had a kind word for everyone no matter who they were and was always positive. He did his best to assist all those who were lucky enough to have crossed his path in life.

Whilst Tom will be an awful loss to Strand Road, we must remember that he was first and foremost a great family man.

We can only imagine how tough the road ahead will be for his family. To his wife Kay, to his children, Niamh, Pat and Tommy, to his mother Mary and to his twin brother Con,hisbrother,Diarmuid and sister Eileen and extended family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
