Gardaí Investigate After Man Assaulted On Tralee Street

.

GARDAI are investigating an assault on a male last week in Tralee.

In the early hours of Tuesday, February 15, between 2am and 3am, Gardaí say a man was approached by other males who knocked him to the ground, where he was assaulted and suffered injuries.

Gardaí are asking anyone who was in the area and saw anything suspicious to contact them at Tralee Garda Station on 066-7102300.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Gardaí apprehended a male in relation to an attempted burglary at Horan’s Fruit and Veg Shop at Upper Rock Street last Tuesday at about 8pm.

NEARLY €10,000 was raised from the Bill Kirby Memorial Walk in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

The walk, which is organised every year by Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor, had to be cancelled last year due to COVID restrictions, but the tradition resumed on St Stephen’s Day and there was a great turnout at the Brogue Inn for the event.

The cheque for €9,590 was presented to Mary Shanahan of Kerry Hospice Foundation on Monday at the Brogue Inn.

.

The walk began as a fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society back in 1999, but since 2005, over €250,000 has been raised from the walk for the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

“We’re thrilled with the amount raised. We didn’t know if people would turn up that morning because of COVID, so to raise nearly €10,000 is great,” said Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor.

“I just want to thank everyone who donated, the sponsors and all who helped out,” he added.

Na Gaeil GAA Club News

Sympathy: All in Na Gaeil were saddened to learn of the death of Denis Reen on Saturday last. Denis was a founder member of Na Gaeil and served as the first chairperson from 1978 to 1981. These were a difficult three years, but Denis was more than capable of dealing with banks, Co. Board, new officers and cofsaches etc etc. He was elected chairperson again from 1987 to 1991. He remained a lifelong member interested, especially, in the underage teams. We extend our sympathy to his wife Barbara and family Frank and John, who played for the club, Julianne, Bairbre and Emily, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and many relatives and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS
50 boys and girls trained indoors in our complex Sunday despite the awful weather outside. The enthusiasm of the players was infectious and it’s fair to say the coaches enjoyed the session every bit as much as the children.

Second session and already the boys and girls are into the routine. Great fun was had during the relay races as well as the fundamentals games.
We train again next Sunday at 11am.

New players always welcome

 U8/U10/GIRLS
The terrible weather meant that training came indoors on Sunday in the John Mitchel’s GAA Complex, with the u8 and U10 girls safe from the wind and the rain. But it didn’t mean that the action was any less intense, as the girls continued to ramp up their physical activity after the off-season.
After a light warm-up the skills sessions began with the girls paired off for kicking and handpassing skills, with Caoimhe, Siun, Aoibheann and Millie all standing out. Following this there was an intensive hand-passing game with the girls practicing their high-pressure passing and tackling skills to replicate game situations. Ava, Kayla and Clodagh all stood out, with a number of mini-breaks to ensure that the coaches were able to bring the girls attention to some skills breakdowns that needed to be caught early.
The day ended with a backs and forwards set up and again there was some excellent tackling and ball movement, which pleasantly surprised the coaches this early in the season.
Eva, Caoimhe Mai, Siun and Ciara stood out here and the girls were sent home with homework to practice their handpassing and kick passing.
Training continues next weekend at 11am on Sunday morning. All are welcome.

SENIOR MEN
We played Austin Stacks in the Town League in dreadful conditions at home last Sunday morning. The first half was played in horrendous wind and rain conditions were poor for both sides. The first half saw us excellent in defence with great performances from Padraig White, Akeem Molloy  The first half ended 1 point each and our score coming from James Duggan.

The conditions continued to worsen in the second half and we added excellent scores from James Duggan and ran out victorious on a score line of 4 points to 3 points .

Juvenile Academy

U5

A nice turnout for our first session back .Great to see all the familiar faces returning and a big welcome to our newcomers.  Lots of games to get everyone moving with and without the ball.

U7

More of the under 7 were bursting with energy today on the first day back. We had excellent numbers and with 6 coaches we were just about able to handle them.
Noel Gilbride, Mike Moriarty, John Fitzgerald, Terry Boyle and first time coach James spade were all eager to help with perfecting their skills. A few games were had and all seemed to enjoy.

With the excellent facilities in Tralee I.T we were well sheltered from the wind and rain. We will be indoor for next few weeks, so it’s a great time to introduce the kids to football and to develop their skills

U8 Girls

Despite the desperate weather conditions the under 8 girls got off to a warm & dry start in the fantastic facility at the Kerry Sports Academy. Just 8 girls made it on the morning, which combined with 4 enthusiastic coaches made a great coaching ratio!!

The smiles on the girls rosy cheeks said it all! It was a fun enthusiastic session for all with the core skills all covered within movement games. The girls were delighted to finish by knocking their coaches out in a fist pass game of rollerball!

With such high enthusiasm it was hard to pick player of the week but this week it went to Sadie Hennessy for her determination, team spirit and excellent practice of skills over the winter season.

Great work girls, keep practicing those skills to impress your coaches & enjoy the fun next week! Our under 12 girls, under 14 girls and under 11 boys were unable to play out in Kerry Sports Academy’s Astro pitch. We will try again next week.

U9

The u9s had a solid start to the year and its clear lots of the boys have been practicing over the winter. We practiced our hand passing, soloing and pickups and we finished with a game where some brilliant goals were scored. See you all next week again.

U10 Girls

U10 Girls returned to training Sunday morning 20th at Kerry Sports Academy. 12 girls played fun games coached by Kieran and Nigel. They practiced pick up’s, solo’s, hand passing and kicking. Finishing with a 6-a-side match the girls showed great determination. Well done to Abbey Hobbert who won u10 girls player of the week. Keep up the practice at home. See you all next week.

The win avenges the defeat suffered by the Warriors when the sides met in Galway last November.

The Warriors started brightly with Aaron Calitxe and Nikola Roso combining for the Warriors first five scores to lead before scores from Lovre Tvrdic, John Burke and Deondre Jackson levelled the contest midway through the quarter.

Tvrdic and Jackson were in range again to edge the Galway side ahead before Eoin Quigley stepped to board and Ron Elksnis fired in his first score to see the sides level at 21-21 at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors stepped up the pace early in the second and two cracking three-point scores from Daniel Jokubaitis and Elksnis who was also in range from inside pushed the host 32-23 ahead.

Jeryn Lucas and Stephen Commins replied to keep Maree in touch, but another three from Jokubaitis sparked the Warriors to shoot their way to a double-digit lead with Roso and Elksnis dominating the exchanges under the Maree board.

Two scores from Tvrdic and another from Luca Krajlic kept the Maree flame lit but Aaron Calixte brought the huge crowd out of their seats with a showstopping three in the dying seconds to see the Warriors lead 49-39 at the long break.

The impressive Deondre Jackson fired Maree back into the game with scores from either side of the arc but Nikola Roso’s hard work in the paint paid off with three scores in a row and when Aaron Calixte repeated the dose with a hat trick of his own the Warriors were in full control.

Maree were struggling to make any impression on the Warriors lead but a quick run of scores from Jackson, Krajlic, and threes from Lucas and Stephen Commins cut the gap to 10.

Ron Elksnis continued his best performance of the season to fire in from inside and out before Brandon Cotton pulled up to float in his first score of the game and the Warriors led 76-60 at the end of the third.

The Warriors continued to keep the visitors at arms-length with scores from Jokubaitis, Cotton and Elksnis but Maree’s never-say-die attitude saw them halve the Warriors lead to 10 with Jackson again showing his ability to hit tough shots.

However a super score from Calixte coming straight up the lane eased the home side back into a comfortable double-digit lead.

Tvrdic and Krajlic offered token resistance for Maree late on, but the outstanding Aaron Calixte capped another top-class display firing in from inside and outside the arc saw the Warriors take a big step towards returning to the Complex for a League quarter final play off in mid-March.

The win sees off the Maree challenge for second place on the table, but keen rivals C&S Neptune now remain the only team that can deny the Cup champions a home quarter final.

With one final twist in the tale, the Warriors face a trip to play Neptune in the last home and away game in Neptune Stadium on March 12th.

Top scorers: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Ron Elksnis 24, Aaron Calixte 22, Nikola Roso 15

NUIG Maree: Deondre Jackson 25, Lovre Tvrdic 13, Jeryn Lucas 10

• Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is a local derby with Team 360 Financial Killorglin in the Killorglin Sports Complex on Saturday 5th March in the penultimate Southern Conference fixture of the season with tip off at 7.15pm.

Tralee Chamber Pays Tribute To Denis Reen

.
Denis Reen

Tralee Chamber Alliance has paid tribute to its Co-Founder, Denis Reen who passed away yesterday.

“Denis Reen was a collosus in Tralee,” reads a statement from the Chamber.

”He loved the town and played a key role in its development over many decades. As if he wasn’t busy enough in his daily professional life as a dentist, Denis gave his time and energy, freely, to many community groups.

He was a former President of the Festival of Kerry and Chairman of Na Gaeil GAA Club in the 70s and 80s.

A keen golfer, another of his achievements was his involvement in moving Tralee Golf Club from Mounthawk to the world famous Arnold Palmer-designed links in Barrow.

But it was in the 1990s when Denis Reen came into his own. He spearheaded the growth of Tralee as a tourism destination when leading the Tralee Task Force.

In that decade we saw the development of the Aqua Dome, with Denis as the Chairman, coinciding with the reopening of the Blennerville Steam Train and Windmill and other projects that blossomed during the Celtic Tiger years.

In 2011, after three tough years of recession due to the property bubble explosion in 2008, Denis Reen brought the next generation of Tralee’s business people together to lead the recovery.

He challenged them, us, to do whatever was necessary to promote Tralee as a great place to live, work and visit. It was from that effort we saw Holiday Tralee, the revived Tralee Taskforce and the former Tralee Town Council join forces to create a new look Chamber of commerce.

Denis and the Board of the Aqua Dome seconded the CEO, Kieran Ruttledge to lead the growth of Tralee Chamber Alliance in 2012.”

The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Nathan McDonnell, said: “Our sympathies go to Denis Reen’s family, his wife Barbara and children Frank, John, Julianne, Bairbre and Emily as well as his siblings. Denis made Tralee a better town and leaves a massive legacy behind. We all owe him a big debt of gratitude and I’m sure his life and accomplishments will be celebrated over the coming days. May he rest in peace.”

Status Yellow Wind Warning To Remain In Place Until Monday Morning

.

IT was a wild night and morning as Storm Franklin continues to make its presence felt in the county.

Met Éireann issue a Status Yellow Wind Warning for the entire country this morning and it will remain in place until 9am on Monday morning.

Storm Franklin will cause very strong winds with severe and damaging gusts. These winds combined with very high seas will lead to wave overtopping along Atlantic coasts, which may result in coastal flooding.

It’s been a wet morning in the Tralee area but, according to the Met Éireann website, the rain will become less persistent as the afternoon wears on.

A FANTASTIC event held last year to remember a much loved Tralee man raised over €21,000 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

The Hawley O’Sullivan Memorial Truck Run was organised by Hawley’s niece, Karen Maher Hayles and saw over 100 trucks take part in the event back in October.

Hawley O’Sullivan, from O’Rahillys Villas was just 28 when he died on June 15, 1996 and the event, which took place from Fels Point, was organised to coincide with the 25th anniversary of his passing.

.

Hawley was well known in the trucking community having worked for O’Neill’s Transport and later Garyowen Transport, so it was no surprise the turnout was so impressive.

On Saturday, Karen, her family and people involved in the organisation of the event were on hand to present a cheque for €21,684 to the Kerry Hospice.

“We’re delighted, there were 107 trucks on the day so it was a brilliant turnout. It was a great day out and it was lovely that Haulie’s son Tony was there,” said Karen who thanked everyone who helped out and donated to the cause.

“We are thrilled with the donation,” said Jack Shanahan, Chairman of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. “It’s been a phenomenal effort by Karen, her friends and family. Last year was a very hard for fundraising, as was 2020, so efforts like these go a long way towards funding palliative care at the unit.”

Mounthawk Students Enter Young Social Innovators Projects

THE students of Mercy Mounthawk Transition Year are showing their inventive side for this year’s Young Social Innovators (YSI) Programme.

The YSI is a Social Innovation Education Programme encourages students to use their talents, insights, passion and creativity to take action and come up with innovative solutions to social challenges and issues that exist in society today.

This year, three groups of Transition Year students in the school are taking part in the competition working on projects that aim to explore, educate and raise awareness around the social issues of body image and body positivity, sustainable style instead of fast fashion and tackling the existence and use of harmful language.

Continued below…

.

The project called ‘Bandage Your Language’ is dedicating the year to raising awareness about “the power of language”; highlighting the impact and effects that harmful words and language can have when used in a hurtful and negative manner – in person and online.

The goal of this project is to educate and encourage their fellow students to take ownership of the words they speak and language they use in their everyday lives, taking a conscious stand against harmful and hurtful language.

Students seek to create a “no tolerance and acceptance attitude” to any harmful language used or heard within the school community and beyond.

Since the beginning of the school year, the group have been busy exploring, educating and raising awareness around this social issue through a variety of actions and events.

Most recently, the group held a fundraising event during their lunchtime on “World Random Act of Kindness Day” last Thursday in aid of Jigsaw Kerry Youth Mental Health Services.

They spread some ‘Valen-kindness’ and sold some sweet kebabs with little messages of positivity, highlighting the importance of using kind words and positive language, making over €200 euro for Jigsaw Kerry.

They are currently working hard on developing a “Bandage Your Language” podcast opening conversation and discussion around this social issue and will include some interesting segments! Follow their project journey on their social media page: Instagram @bandage_your_language

The TY “This is Me” YSI class have also been busy working on their project this term. Their goal this school year is to encourage their fellow students to embrace their bodies and instil confidence in any student that may be experiencing negative thoughts regarding how they look and in particular their body shape.

This project is something that these TY students are particularly passionate about as they feel that young people’s excessive use of social media as well as numerous lockdowns have severely impacted the younger generation’s self-image.

Since September, this YSI class has completed two actions for their project. Their first action was to design motivational posters to place on the mirrors in all year group’s bathrooms and around the school building.

The idea behind this was to uplift anyone who may be struggling with their self-image in general or even someone who may just be having a bad mental health day.

The students were incredibly proud of this idea and worked very hard on their designs.

Their second action was a sweet sale. The students packaged over 150 sweet bags, they also added their logo (the Chinese symbol for confidence) and a different positive message tag to each bag. They managed to raise over €350 for the Bodywhys Charity Organisation via this action.

The project called ‘I am what I am’ is taking an environmental angle and also intend to enter the Young Environmentalist Awards with their project.

They are encouraging people to embrace who they are and to challenge the pressure to look a certain way in terms of how our bodies look and what we wear.

The group held a fundraiser before Christmas by selling homemade cookies to send the message that “it’s ok to eat the cookie”.

They also organised a Centenary Session where all songs performed were about being kinder to ourselves and embracing our individuality. Songs included: ‘Thursday’, ‘Little Things’ and ‘See Beneath Your Beautiful’.

Most recently, they set up a TY Swap Shop to facilitate “sustainable style” instead of ‘Fast Fashion’. Students who donated clothes were invited to attend the shop which proved to be a great success.

The YSI Teams are being invited to “speak out” on the issues that they are tackling this year in March during the national YSI Speak Out Virtual Tour.

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Question: I want to buy a house, but can’t get a mortgage with the bank. What other options do I have for finance?

Answer: You may be able to get a local authority home loan to buy a home, if you’ve been unable to get the funds you need from a bank.

The Local Authority Home Loan is a government-backed mortgage with reduced interest rates. The interest rates are fixed for the full term of the loan, so you have the same repayments for the lifetime of the loan. You can use the loan for new or second-hand properties, or to build a home.

How do I qualify for the loan?

To get this loan, your income must be below a certain level and you must have been in continuous employment for a set amount of time. You must also meet some other criteria. You must:

• Have proof that you haven’t been able to get the mortgage funding you need from 2 banks or building societies
• Have a deposit
• Have a satisfactory credit rating
• Live in the property once you have bought or built it

What is the maximum market value of a property for this loan?

The home you are buying or building must be below a certain market value (price). The maximum market value of the property depends on where the property is located.

• €320,000 in Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wicklow
• €250,000 in the rest of the country

You can borrow up to 90% of the market value of the property and you may be able to get the Help to Buy incentive, to help with your deposit.

The interest rates are fixed for the full term of the mortgage and are currently:

• 2.495% for up to 25 years

Finnegan On Films: A Family Favourite And Amazing True Stories

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on some offerings on the box this weekend…

The very epitome of a family film is the glorious Paddington (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) a walking, talking bear from darkest Peru with a fondness for marmalade.

Following an earthquake, Paddington finds himself in London. However, life in modern Britain is somewhat different from the stories told to him by his aunt.

He gets as far as Paddington Station where he meets the Brown family, who take him home.

Paddington is voiced by Ben Whishaw, and the combination of live action and animation is so good, you forget the effects.

Any film that can also add the quality of Peter Capaldi and Jim Broadbent to the cast makes it well worth a watch for all ages.

The Flying Scotsman (Saturday 10.38pm TG4) is the true story of Graeme Obree (Jonny Lee Miller) a Scottish amateur cyclist who broke the world Hour Record for distance covered in 1994.

He did it on a bike he built himself using parts cannibalised from all sorts of sources including a washing machine.  If that were not impressive enough, Obree was also suffering from bouts of clinical depression.

Unfortunately, and perhaps not untypically, the governing body of the sport were not as enamoured of Obree’s accomplishments, and stripped him of the title.

This film is the inspiring story of Obree’s battle to reclaim that title, especially while working his way through his own mental health difficulties.

Also starring Billy Boyd, Laura Fraser and, most notably, the scene-stealing Brian Cox, this is a film that treats what could have been an exploitive story with taste and decorum, so kudos to Director Douglas Mackinnon and a screenplay by John Brown, Declan Hughes and Simon Rose.

Cinematographer Gavin Finney is also most inventive in presenting Obree’s story from his individual viewpoint.

Shadowlands (Sunday 3.20pm RTE1) is another true life story of a meeting of minds that became so much more

C.S. Lewis is a reserved middle aged academic bachelor who lectures at Magdalen College, Oxford.  He is, however, most famous for being the author of the Chronicles of Narnia series of children’s stories.

He meets American poet Joy Gresham.  She is married, with a young son.  What begins as an interesting clash of cultures and views becomes a relationship of convenience that in turn leads to far deeper feelings.

Starring Anthony Hopkins as CS Lewis and Debra Winger as Joy, directed by Richard Attenborough and a Screenplay by William Nicholson, this is a superior drama that, if you are dry eyed after watching it, you need to check that you still have a pulse. Enjoy and stay safe!

Sponsored: The Amazing Benefits Of Skinade Available From CHRC

.

Mary O’Donnell on the collagen supplement, Skinade, available at the Cosmetic Hair and Restoration Centre at the Bon Secours in Tralee…

As we age, collagen depletes and we lack that lovely plumpness to our skin. So it is a good idea to put the collagen back in – via a supplement.

Collagen is a critical part of the structure of the dermis and it is what gives our skin its plumpness.

As we age, from our early twenties we loose collagen at the rate of 1.5% per year. This loss results in wrinkles, fine lines, dry, blemished and thinning skin.

Victoria Beckham (who knows a thing or two about skin!) takes a collagen supplement, Skinade, to keep her skin looking youthful and glowing. CHRC at Bon Secours Tralee is the exclusive provider of Skinade in Kerry.

Skinade is a drink that supports and nourishes the skin, not just on your face, but all over your body, working from the inside out to rebuild your collagen matrix below the skin surface. It boosts hydration and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Drinking Skinade regularly gives you a firmer, more even toned, hydrated, radiant , youthful and healthier looking skin.

It contains collagen peptides and Vitamin B complex, Vitamin C, lysine and omega 3&6 and as well as working on your skin, it will also work on healthier and faster growing hair and nails.

All you need to do is take this drink daily. I recommend taking it, chilled, in the morning; wait to see the amazing results! For any skin care queries or to find out more about Skinade, contact chrc@bonsecours.ie

THE Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council have thanked members of the public in Kerry for their patience and cooperation during Storm Eunice.

Thousands of homes and businesses were left without power and many trees were felled by the force of the storm this morning, but there were no serious incidents or injuries.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Jimmy Moloney paid tribute to local authority staff and the emergency services for their work in dealing with road closures and other challenges overnight and today.

The Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said that the interagency cooperation in advance of Storm Eunice was hugely important.

“The Kerry Severe Weather Coordination Team had been preparing for a Status Red alert for several days and met regularly to coordinate the response. The weather event was the subject of intense emergency planning in recent days which enhanced the response effort.

“Our crews responded to the issues which arose when it was safe to do so and ensured that routes were reopened as soon as possible.

“I would like to thank the many agencies who assisted in coordinating the response including An Garda Síochána, the HSE, ESB Networks, and local authority emergency services.’

The Head of Taxation at CDS Law & Tax LLP, Tommy Walsh, says it is vitally important that SMEs are structured correctly to minimise this cost and ensure that common tax pitfalls and opportunities are identified…

For any SME owner/manager, it’s natural to become absorbed in the day-to-day running of the business and to lose sight of short, medium, and long-term goals.

Tax optimisation is an essential but often-neglected area and yet making the correct/informed decisions can dramatically improve your day-to-day cashflow and impose structure and purpose on your long-term business plan.

Due consideration should be given to the structure that best suits your personal and business objectives.

Continued below…

.

The correct structure will depend on your objectives and projections for the business – Is there an exit strategy? Is it your intention to sell the business in five to ten years? Do you want to build the business to pass on to the next generation? Have you optimised your pension plan?

Having a clear objective in place with regard to what you want to get from the business allows you to put a tax plan in place early on, which can be very beneficial as some of the major tax reliefs and exemptions are often time sensitive.

Employee turnover can also have a negative impact on a business’ performance. A valued team member resigns out of the blue, and you’re at a loss.

Now is the time to confirm your business is doing the right things to drive job satisfaction and, ultimately, employee retention.

It is therefore important to understand not only the reasons behind staff turnover but also the tax efficient mechanisms which employers can introduce.

One of the most common mistakes made by SME owners when it comes to tax planning is treating it as a post-year-end exercise. Tax planning should be an ongoing process with important action items to take throughout the year.

Smart tax planning can not only lower the amount of taxes that you owe but also offer far more long-term benefits. Discussing your longer-term business plans with CDS Law & Tax LLP, at the earliest opportunity, will ensure effective tax planning for your business.
