IT wasn’t to be for Tralee CBS as they lost the Corn Uí Mhuirí Munster Colleges SFC ‘A’ title to St Brendan’s College Killarney at Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

They went down by 0-17 to 0-12 in the sunshine as the Killarney outfit outscored them in the second half, aided by the strong wind and clinical shooting to ensure victory.

CBS failed to take full advantage of that wind in the first half and they went into the break even at 0-8 apiece.

St Brendan’s were sharper in the second period picking off their scores and the Green couldn’t make their attacks count in the closing stages to narrow the gap, so ‘The Sem’ enjoyed a deserved victory.

Disappointment then for CBS, but with the talent in the school it won’t be long before Munster silverware returns. Scroll down for photos…

A YEAR to remember for Austin Stacks GAA club was celebrated in style on Saturday night as nearly 300 of the Rockies faithful gathered in Ballygarry House Hotel for a Victory Social.

The success of the senior team was certainly to the fore after their win over Kerins O’Rahillys in the County Final but the B Footballers also enjoyed success this year.

Club Chairman Shane Lynch said it was an opportunity to look back on two years of success for the club.

“It’s really two years we are celebrating tonight. We won the club championship in 2020, but with COVID we couldn’t have a social. The last year though has been an incredible odyssey for all of us and has given everybody a huge lift as we’ve come out of COVID.

.

“We’re hugely proud of what the players have achieved on the pitch, how they’ve made us feel and that’s really what we’re celebrating tonight. We had great days in Austin Stack Park and even in Thurles at the Munster final, despite the disappointment.”

“But really, this is the first proper big night out in two years. We haven’t really been able to socialise properly and that’s what we’re here for tonight,” said Shane.

A number of presentations were made, including medals for the Senior County Championship 2021, Senior Club Championship 2020 and 2021, Senior Tralee Town Championship 2020, Division 5 County League Winners 2021 and the Tralee Junior League 2021.

Senior Player of the Year went to Colin Griffin, B Player of the Year went to Conor Myers, the Supporter of the Year went to ‘The 16th Man’, a general award to the famous Austin Stacks fans who bring colour and noise to all big occasions.

Elma Nix also received a presentation for her outstanding service as secretary of the club. Meanwhile, Best Dressed Lady on the night went to Noelle Cregan and Best Dressed Man was Conor Donaghy.

The night began with a champagne reception at 6.30pm, followed by a delicious meal. After the medal presentation, ‘Heart & Soul’ provided the entertainment followed by DJ Francie Breen who rocked the Rockies until the early hours. Scroll down for photos…

Know Your Rights: Becoming An Irish Citizen

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Who is entitled to Irish Citizenship?

You are entitled to claim Irish citizenship if any one of the following applies:

1. You were born in Ireland or Northern Ireland before 1 January 2005

2. You were born in Ireland or Northern Ireland after 31 December 2004 and one (or both) of your parents was an Irish or entitled to be an Irish citizen or a British citizen at the time of your birth Or one of the following scenarios apply to you

• One (or both) of your parents was an Irish or British citizen and died before you were born
• One (or both) of your parents was entitled to live in Ireland or Northern Ireland without any restriction on his or her period of residency
• One (or both) of your parents was legally resident on the island of Ireland for 3 out of the 4 years immediately before your birth (this does not include residence on a student visa, or residence while awaiting an international protection decision)

Continued below…

.

3. You were born abroad and one of the following scenarios apply to you:

• One (or both of your parents) was born in Ireland and was entitled to Irish citizenship
• Your grandparent was born in Ireland and you have entered your birth on the Foreign Births Register
• At the time of your birth, your parents had become an Irish citizen by registering with the Foreign Births Register or by naturalisation. You must register your birth with the Foreign Births Register before obtaining Irish citizenship.

4. You were born in Ireland and are not entitled to be a citizen of any other country.

Who is entitled to apply for Irish citizenship by naturalisation?

If you are not entitled to citizenship by birth or descent, you can apply to become an Irish citizen by naturalisation if one of the following situations apply to you:

• You have lived in Ireland legally for 5 out of the last 9 years ending on the day before your application and you have resided in Ireland legally for the 12 month period before your application & you are over 18
• You received a declaration as a refugee from the Minister for Justice & you have lived legally in Ireland for 3 years ending on the day of your application & you are aged over 18:
• You are currently married to or a civil partner of an Irish citizen & you have lived in Ireland legally for 3 out of the 5 years before the day of your application & you have resided in Ireland legally for the 12 month period before your application & you have been married and living together for 3 years
• You are a child born in Ireland who is not entitled to citizenship by birth & both you and one (or both) of your parents has lived in Ireland legally for 5 out of the 9 years ending on the day of your application & both you and one (or both) of your parents have resided in Ireland legally for the 12 month period before your application

How to apply for Citizenship through Naturalisation?

There are a number of steps to follow. First you need to check that you qualify and then you must complete an application form.

It is essential that you use the current version of the application from which you will get on the Immigration Service Delivery website.

You can get help with the form from your local Citizens Information Service. You will need to provide supporting documentation with your application and if your documents are in a language other than English, you must get them translated by a professional translating service.

All adult applicants must send a tax clearance certificate. This certifies that your tax affairs are in order.

When you have completed the application form and are ready to send the form and supporting documents, you will have to make a statutory declaration. A statutory declaration is a way of swearing that something is true.

It is a written statement and must be witnessed by someone who is authorised to witness your declaration.

Your completed form, with the relevant fee is then sent to the Immigration Service at the address on the form.

What rights does Citizenship give?

If you are an Irish citizen, you are entitled to

• Carry an Irish passport
• Live and work in Ireland without restriction
• Vote in a general election, constitutional referendum or presidential election
• Be elected to government in Ireland and in the European Union.
• Live, travel and work within the European Union
• Serve on a jury, unless you are disqualified or ineligible
• Receive diplomatic assistance abroad from an Irish or EU embassy

Can you hold Dual Citizenship?

Ireland allows dual citizenship, which means that you can become an Irish citizen and remain a citizen of another country.

Some countries do not allow dual citizenship and you should check the citizenship rules of your country of nationality if you are considering applying for Irish citizenship.

If you are a dual citizen, you can apply to have your non-Irish passport stamped with a Without Condition Endorsement (also called Stamp 6). This stamp says that you have a right to live in Ireland without any time conditions.

• For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.  Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Finance: Tax Exemptions The Way Forward When Saving Pedal-Pushing Staff Money

.

Calling all employers – would you like to help your employees save money, get fit and help the environment – all while saving yourself money too?

Julianne Spring Heavey, Chartered Tax Advisor at CDS Law & Tax LLP, tentatively writes ‘exciting times ahead’!

The days are getting longer, and we may feel relatively safer with a renewed resolve to carpe diem. So, here’s how a tax exemption can help.

Over the past two years many of us have been thinking more about exercise, getting outdoors in our local amenities, and saving the planet.  If you’re an employer who registers with the ‘bike to work scheme’, you can help your employees tick all of these boxes.

This bike initiative is a win-win as it increases job-satisfaction, while representing a cost-saving for both the employee and the employer.

Continued below…

.

Employees (and directors) save on up to 52%* of the cost of the new bike and equipment, and on car parking fees.

Since cycling reportedly makes us happier, this supports employee retention (a hot topic right now) as happy staff are more likely to stay.  Meanwhile, employer’s PRSI is not payable on the cost of the bike or equipment.

Also, it couldn’t be a more opportune time for us Kerry folk to invest in a new bike. We have the imminent openings of the Tralee-Fenit and Listowel-Abbeyfeale Greenways to look forward to, and this week’s Supreme Court decision clears the way for the construction of the Glenbeigh-Cahersiveen South Kerry Greenway.

Relief under the bike to work scheme provides that where the new bike and safety equipment meet certain conditions, they can be provided tax-free with the employee making a saving of up to 52%*, effectively allowing them to purchase the bike from pre-tax income.

* Based on an employee paying the marginal income tax rate plus PRSI and USC.  The savings individual employees would make would vary depending on their tax credits, reliefs, and exemptions.

Here’s how the scheme operates:

• The employer can register with www.biketowork.ie which is a completely free service providing all administration for the scheme, a helpline for employees, and a list of participating local bike shops (or the employer can administer the scheme themself)
• While the employer does not have to take part in the scheme, if they do, however, it must be offered to all employees
• The bike shop or supplier is paid directly by the employer (reimbursement of the employee is not permitted)
• Employees effectively get up to 52% off* a brand-new bike and safety equipment with maximum relevant spend limits of –
— €1,250 for a new, regular bike, equipment and delivery costs, or
— €1,500 for a new, electric bike, equipment and delivery costs
• Any expenditure in excess of the relevant threshold will be a taxable benefit-in-kind and so PAYE, PRSI and USC must be operated on same
• An employee can avail of both a Travel Pass and this scheme
• Employer’s PRSI is not payable on the cost of the bike or equipment (but an input credit will not be available in respect of the VAT payable as the bike/equipment will not be used for the purposes of taxable supplies)
• The bike and equipment must be mainly used for travel to and from work, or between workplaces.  Home-based employees may be provided with a bike under the scheme if it is used for work-related journeys
• The cost of the bike may be deducted from the employee’s gross pay under an agreed salary sacrifice arrangement over a period of up to 12 months, depending on the options that the employer provides [OR if an employer wishes to incur the cost instead of passing it on to the employee, that is permitted under the scheme so that the employee will not be subject to tax on the benefit in kind, as long as the relevant spend limits above are observed]
• The relief can only be claimed once every 4 years so if purchasing a bike and equipment, they should be purchased in the same transaction

For all scheme conditions and further information on its operation go to www.biketowork.ie or www.revenue.ie

This scheme provides a very simple way of benefiting employees.  If you want to get serious about rewarding, retaining and incentivising key employees there are other tax-efficient opportunities to explore.

For example, offering them a stake in your business through the exercise of qualifying share options under the Key Employee Engagement Programme (KEEP).

Should you wish to discuss this or any other tax optimisation/planning opportunities, then do come in and talk to our tax team in CDS Law & Tax LLP, 4 Denny St., Tralee or phone us on 066 7169033.

Sponsored: Effective Moisturisers For Sensitive Skin At The CHRC

.

Mary O’Donnell of the Cosmetic Hair and Restoration Clinic on some effective moisturisers available at the clinic…

One of my most asked questions is “can you recommend a moisturiser for sensitive skin?”

Before identifying the best moisturiser for you, at CHRC our first step is always to analyse your skin to identify what might be causing your skin sensitivity and identify the best treatment for this. Overly dry skin can lead to skin reactions.

Excessive exposure to skin-damaging environmental factors such as sun and wind or excessive heat or cold can also be a factor. I can’t overemphasise the importance of wearing a good SPF all year round!

If you are trying a new moisturiser, and your skin is highly sensitive, we often recommend that you test it first.

At CHRC, HydraCalm from Alumier, our medical grade-skin care range, is a soothing and rich moisturiser loaded with antioxidants and calming ingredients.

Perfect for anyone with sensitive skin, it calms and soothes and relieves redness and irritation.

HydraCalm contains sea whip, an excellent ingredient for redness-prone and sensitive skin, intensely nourishing and hydrating.

HydraCalm contains low molecular weight hyaluronic acid which draws water into the skin, making skin plumper, softer and smoother.

This amazing product also contains redness -relieving peptides and the calming qualities of honey to soothe irritation, redness and puffiness. It can be used both in the morning and the evening for face, neck and décolleté.

For a skin consultation with full skin analysis, to help identify the best products and treatment plan to address your skin concerns, contact us via https://bonsecourschrc.ie

Finnegan On Films: Romance, Dogs And Scoundrels On TV This Weekend

.

If you are looking for a diversion from the various sporting activities over the weekend, James Finnegan has a few films worth checking out…

One of the very best adventure comedies of all time is Romancing The Stone (4.40pm Saturday RTE2).

Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) is a New York based author of romance thrillers.  She dreams to meet her ideal man and have adventures such as she writes about.  However, you should be careful what you wish for, especially in films.

She receives a desperate message from her sister in South America telling her that unless Joan obtains and brings a treasure map, showing the location of a priceless green gem, to Colombia, her sister will be killed by Ralph (Danny DeVito) an antiquities smuggler from Queens.

Continued below…

.

There is a surrounding cast of nasties and villains, banditos and traps that are frankly a joy to watch.

Most of all there is help in the form of Michael Douglas as Jack T. Colton, a brash, rugged bird hunter who knows his way around the area, looking to buy a sailboat and sail around the world.

This has resonances of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, and the chemistry and relationships between three leads is a joy.  Directed by Robert Zemeckis and with a score by Alan Silvestri, this is strongly recommended.

A few weeks ago, I reviewed ‘A Dog’s Journey’, a charming tale of doggies dying and being reincarnated to bring joy and purpose to the lives of varying humans.

Little did I realise that this was a sequel to A Dogs Purpose (6.35pm Saturday RTE1), and frankly, they did not mess with a winning formula.

So, if you want a film that will make you laugh, cry and question the true purpose of life, this is the film for you.

However, be aware of the need for industrial strength tissues, especially if you are a doggy person, and yes, there may be something in my eye.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (10.15pm Saturday TG4) is a classic comedy starring Michael Caine as Lawrence Jamieson, Steve Martin as Freddy Benson and directed by Frank Oz.

They are two conmen with very different styles but prey on seducing and swindling wealthy women on the French Riviera.

Obviously, this is too small a patch for two such rouges, so they make a bet.  If one manages to con Jane Colgate (Glenne Headley), a glamorous heiress, the other will leave town.

This story has been filmed a number of times – “Bedtime Story” with Marlon Brando and David Niven comes immediately to mind – but this is my favourite version.

I cannot let this week go without joining in the praise and joy for Jessie Buckley’s nominations for both the Academy Award and British Academy Film as Best Supporting Actress, among a myriad number of other awards for “The Lost Daughter”.  She really is such a wonderfully talented actress. Enjoy and stay safe.

Gardaí Warn Of ‘Romance Fraud’ Ahead Of Valentine’s Day

.

AS Valentine’s Day approaches, An Garda Síochána are asking members of the public to be vigilant of romance fraud as incidences of romance scams rose by 86% in 2021.

Romance fraud happens all year round and not just around Valentine’s Day. More than 70% of romance fraud victims are women.

Romance fraudsters may try to get their victims to send them money using the following excuses:

•  To cover the cost of travelling to see the victim
•  For emergency medical expenses for the scammer or a family member — typically a child
•  A business opportunity which would allow them to live together comfortably

Continued below…

.

There is an ever increasing link between romance fraud and investment fraud. In many cases, scammers will ask victims to invest in a fraudulent scheme or business. Such investments ultimately see the funds transferred to the fraudster through a number of linked accounts.

Members of the public are advised to be vigilant as there are huge risks involved in investing in cryptocurrencies and not to share any money with someone they meet through online websites or apps and to get professional and legal advice before investing.

An Garda Síochána works closely with Europol to disrupt the activities of romance scammers, particularly organised crime gangs that engage in this type of criminality; as well as monitoring dating sites for this activity.

Some case studies include;

• A 41-year-old female was contacted by a male claiming to be a well-known musician, she became romantically involved online and was defrauded of over €26,000.

• A 65-year-old female contacted Gardaí to report that she was at the loss of €35,000, as a result of meeting a male through social media. Throughout their online relationship she was convinced to purchase stream cards and send the codes directly onto her male friend, subsequently she then transferred money to various accounts in Malaysia.

• A 38-year-old male reported that he began engaging online with a female. The female stated she needed money to return home from Mexico. The male sent €3,800 to female via Bitcoin in one transaction.

• A 51-year-old female believed she was in an online relationship with a male, she agreed to transfer €90,000 to him in the belief that it was a loan for his business. She now believes this to be a case of fraud.

An Garda Síochána wishes to provide the following information and advice to members of the public:

What are the Signs?

Romance Fraudsters will:

• Try to move communications away from dating websites. They suggest that you move to instant messaging, text or phone calls instead.
• Ask a lot of personal questions.
• Avoid answering personal questions about themselves. The details that they do tell you seem made up or do not reflect reality. For instance, they may say that they are university educated, but their spelling and grammar is poor.
• Try to establish a bond quickly. For example, they may give you an endearing pet name e.g. baby, darling, etc.
• Ask for financial help. They may tell you about money problems in the hope that you will offer to help.
• Ask you to invest in a fraudulent scheme or business.
• Never meet you in person. They will present obstacles and may go as far as making arrangements and cancelling them at the last minute. They may promise to want to see you but offer excuses which delay this, such as financial troubles.

What can you do?

• Use trusted dating websites
• Do not share personal details
• Do not send or receive money
• Think twice before using your webcam
• Trust your instincts

For further advice or information or if you believe that you are a victim of a romance scam, or think your identity or personal information has been compromised, please contact any Garda Station and report the crime.

Car lovers are in for a treat as Kerry Motor Club are organising a static car show in the Brandon Car Park in Tralee.

A huge collection of rally cars, vintage, classic and sports cars will be on show. The oldest car will date from the 1920s, while local dealers will show off the latest new cars on the day.

Local motorcycle racers will show off the race bikes they use in Mondello Park – it will be the first-time local racing bikes have gone on show in Kerry.

Kerry People Urged To Show Solidarity On Daffodil Day

.

THE Irish Cancer Society is calling on the public in Kerry to take part in any way they can on Daffodil Day to show solidarity and support for anyone affected by cancer.

RTÉ’s Claire Byrne joined cancer survivor and mum-of-two, Donna Marie Cullen, to celebrate the return of Daffodil Day on March 25 to communities around Ireland for the first time in three years.

Claire Byrne said, “I am proud to support Daffodil Day 2022. Cancer affects every family in Ireland in some way, and we know that this year alone, almost 45,000 people will hear the words ‘you have cancer’.

Continued below…

.

“Daffodil Day has such an important place in the calendar each year and I’m delighted that it will be back on our streets on March 25th. I look forward to once again seeing communities come together united with a single purpose, to raise funds and take back from cancer.”

Claire was joined by mother-of-two Donna-Marie Cullen from Lucan, Dublin who experienced a cancer diagnosis during the pandemic, which she says was “horrific” due to the amount of time she spent in hospital away from her family with no visitors due to restrictions.

In September of 2020, the 36-year-old was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of cancer called Ewing Sarcoma. She began her treatment immediately, which included extensive chemotherapy, surgery and 30 sessions of radiotherapy.

Donna-Marie finished up her surgery and treatment in summer 2021 and she still has some reconstructive surgeries ahead of her.

She said; “From day one, the Irish Cancer Society have been there with me and they’ve been with my family. They provided relevant information, they were sincere, empathetic and they just understood. All of my family engaged in the counselling services, including my 12-year-old son Seán.

“The Irish Cancer Society were there for me throughout my treatment, because I was alone for one week out of three in the hospital. I’m forever grateful for what they’ve done for me. They’ve helped me and so many families in this country, and it’s because of people who have donated to the Irish Cancer Society, especially on Daffodil Day.”

Averil Power, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, said, “We are so excited to be able to get out on the streets again to see the amazing support the people of Ireland show to anyone affected by cancer. Daffodil Day is such a special and hopeful day for our entire community. Throughout the pandemic we’ve been so lucky that people have found innovative ways to support us but we are looking forward to seeing Ireland turn yellow once again on March 25th.”

People are being asked to take part and take back from cancer in any way they can this Daffodil Day. As well as donating at Cancer.ie and volunteering to help fundraise, they can purchase items from the Daffodil Day online shop and take part in a steps challenge.

For more information about Daffodil Day visit www.Cancer.ie/DaffodilDay .

CEO Hopes Public Supports Return Of The Aqua Dome Next Month

.
.

THE CEO of the Aqua Dome said he hopes the public will support the return of the popular facility next month.

Last week it has announced that the Aqua Dome will reopen its doors to customers on Tuesday March 15, almost two years to the day since it was forced to close due to the pandemic.

Coinciding with the extended St Patrick’s Day Bank Holiday weekend, the reopening of the facility will bring a timely boost to the tourism industry in Tralee.

Continued below…

.

CEO of the Aqua Dome, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “We are delighted to be reopening once again. We hope it will be business as normal for the years ahead and we look forward to welcoming our staff and regular customers back.”

“We are excited to welcome back our customers and we hope they will return in great numbers in the Spring and, in particular, during the peak months of July and August,” said Mr Ruttledge.

The Aqua Dome retained a core staff who have kept the place in excellent condition but plans for a new major attraction at the site were shelved because the funds were needed to offset losses caused by the closure.

Management remain mindful that the reopening of the Aqua Dome, which is powered by both gas and electricity, comes at a time when energy costs are on the rise and insurance premiums continue to be high.

An Garda Síochána Launches National Recruitment Campaign

.

AN Garda Síochána has commenced a recruitment competition for Garda trainees.

The competition, which is open from today until 3pm on Wednesday, March 16th 2022, is seeking to attract candidates from across society and with a wide-variety of skills to join An Garda Síochána.

As of January 2022, there are 14,539 members of An Garda Síochána and there is a Government commitment to increase this by an additional 800 new Garda recruits in 2022.

Continued below…

.

‘The Difference Is You’ advertising campaign will feature Garda members in a number of situations where every day skills can transferred into policing and will run across radio, online and social media from today, and TV and online video channels from later today.

Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris said, “For 100 years, An Garda Síochána has been keeping the people of Ireland safe and as we begin marking our organisation’s centenary this week it is particularly fitting for us to be able open up recruitment.

“Ireland is changing, and is more diverse and multi-cultural than ever before. We want our police service to fully reflect this important progress and to represent all the communities that we proudly serve. That is why our recruitment drive is focused on encouraging those who may not have previously considered training to become a Garda.

“We are very keen to break down some of the barriers that may have been deterring people of every ethnicity, minority background, religious identity or none from applying to become a Garda. In previous recruitment campaigns, proficiency in two languages was required. For this campaign, proficiency will only be required in one language – which can be English or Irish.

“Being more reflective of the society we serve will enhance our ability to provide an effective police service for all people. While we have one of the highest levels of female police officers in Europe, we fully recognise that this is not replicated when it comes to minority communities.

“There will be a significant focus in our recruitment campaign in reaching out to groups and individuals from these communities to encourage them to join An Garda Síochána. We know we have a lot of work to do in this area.

“An Garda Síochána has long attracted highly capable people to pursue a role in policing, who steadily build up a highly rewarding career in the organisation at various levels. Becoming a Garda is a chance to make a real difference in communities. We want people from all backgrounds to join us and make that difference.

“I am encouraging all those with excellent interpersonal skills or a unique skillset, a strong sense of community and those who are enthusiastic about making a real difference to people’s quality of life, to apply before 3pm Wednesday, March 16th 2022 because the difference is you,” said Commissioner Harris.

Prospective candidates can apply at the following link – https://www.publicjobs.ie/en/index.php?option=com_jobsearch&view=jobdetails&Itemid=263&cid=149998&campaignId=2235201

Daly Calls For Government Action To Help Renters In Kerry

.
Deputy Pa Daly.

SINN Féin Kerry TD Pa Daly says the Government’s needs to ban rent increases on all existing and new tenancies, and to put money back in renters’ pockets through a refundable tax credit worth a month’s rent.

The TD was commenting on the latest rental report from Daft.ie, which shows that rents are continuing to rise across the State, with renters facing increases of 14.4% in Kerry at the end of 2021.

The average monthly asking rent in the last three months of 2021 in Kerry was €1,083.

Continued below…

.

“The Daft.ie rental report for the last three months of 2021 shows that the average asking rent in Kerry is up 14.4%,” said Deputy Daly. “This is a phenomenal increase and is a massive additional cost for workers and families to bear; on top of rapid increases in household bills.”

“This latest Daft.ie report makes it clear that there is little or zero affordable rental supply in most parts of the State.

“The ban on local councils buying homes with HAP or RAS tenants in-situ where the landlord is selling up is also forcing families into homelessness while the properties are being sold to investment funds, who lease these same properties back to local authorities. This makes no social or economic sense.

“The government’s 2% rent cap is clearly not working. We need a ban on rent increases on all existing and new tenancies, and we need government to put money back in renters’ pockets through a refundable tax credit worth a month’s rent.

“Government must also accept that their social and affordable rental targets for 2022 are not sufficient and must be revised,” he concluded.

TK Bobcats vs Tralee Imperials

U12 Boys T2

The boys played their second game of the season today.

Tralee Imperials started strong demonstrating great composure and rebounding dominance. As the game progressed however the Ballymac home side took control of the game and unfortunately it was too much for our boys.

There was massive heart shown by the whole team with everyone getting valuable game time and experience. There were some nice scores with the odd swish or two from ‘downtown’.

The team look forward to welcoming back coach Henrique this week who returns just in time for a busy run of games.

St. Colman’s Rockets 21-23 Tralee Imperials

U14 Girls T2

Our U14 Girls Team 2 continued their season on Friday evening at Milltown Basketball Hall against St Colman’s Rockets.

It was a fantastic evening for all involved, as for the first time in weeks we welcomed supporters back to the game. The girls have missed them, we’ve missed them and it’s great to have them back.

For everyone present, they witnessed a thriller, with both teams producing the most exciting game of the season, end to end basketball that had everything, and most importantly 2 teams giving it everything.

Imperials began the game strongly, bucking the trend of recent games. Niamh Fitzgibbon was to the fore as usual, with her strong running and defensive work.

Imperials opened the scoring in the game, an inbound from Maria Walsh finding Naomi Osibodu with Naomi finishing in style. Another great run from Niamh Fitzgibbon found Katie Enright under the basket, with Katie completing the finish.

At this time St Colman’s Rockets began to get momentum and followed with some scores on the board.

The final score of the quarter for Imperials fell to Maria Walsh, a brilliant effort finished superbly, after great work by Aobh Cronin. Imperials with a 6-5 lead at the end of quarter 1.

The 2nd quarter began with St Colman’s Rockets to the fore. Imperials were creating chances but not applying the finish, with St Colman’s defence on top.
St Colman’s Rockets secured the opening baskets of the quarter to race into an early lead.

Evelyn Moriarty opened the Imperials account with a great score, Evelyn collecting an offensive rebound and finishing superbly. Grace Reilly was leading the charge for Imperials, and after a great run, offloaded to Aoife O’Connell with Aoife finishing from distance.

Clodagh Burke and Juliette Gleeson were combining well, with Imperials beginning to create opportunities. Evelyn Moriarty added 1 from the free throw line, Evelyn having a big impact on the quarter for Imperials.

The final score of the quarter fell to Aoife O’Connell, a great run and finish from Aoife, ensuring the sides went to the half time break all square.

Quarter 3 opened with both defences on top. Amber Ryan and Maria O’Connell were strong on defence for Imperials. The opening score of the quarter came from Keelin Reidy.

A great steal from Abbey Stephenson and an offload to Keelin deep inside her own half. Keelin carried magnificently and finished under pressure. A brilliant score from Keelin, keeping Imperials in touch. Scores were again at a premium for both teams during the quarter.

In the final minutes of the quarter, Imperials rallied with an exceptional collective team effort led by Grace Reilly.

Grace secured the last 2 baskets of the quarter to nudge Imperials in front. Both scores from under the basket after offensive rebounds. Imperials with a slender 19-17 lead at the end of quarter 3.

With a slender 19-17 Imperials lead, the scene was set for an epic final quarter and both teams did not disappoint.

St Colman’s Rockets were quick off the mark in quarter 4 with strong running and fast breaks. Imperials were defending well, but finding it difficult to get scores on the board.

Lauren Foley was working hard for Imperials and defending brilliantly. Maria Walsh and Juliette Gleeson were combining well and creating opportunities.

St Colman’s Rockets added to the scoreboard midway through the quarter, to move into a 21-19 lead. The introduction of Naomi Osibodu steadied the Imperials defence.

A strong defensive rebound from Naomi, and a fast break and offload to Aoife O’Connell, with Aoife finishing under pressure.

The teams locked on the scoreboard at 21-21 with 3:12 on the clock. Both teams were in foul trouble late in the quarter, with both sides visiting the free throw line.

With 1:33 on the clock, Abbey Stephenson carried and drew the foul from the Rockets defence. Abbey to the free throw line with the sides all square at 21-21. Abbey slotted shot number 1 to the delight of the Imperials supporters and bench. Could she finish the 2nd to make it a 2 point game.

The answer was a definitive yes, Abbey scoring the 2nd shot to give Imperials the lead at 23-21. The final moments of the match were scintillating. St Colman’s Rockets in the ascendency putting massive pressure on the Imperials defence. Imperials hold out on a final score line of 23-21.

Thanks to St Colman’s Rockets for a very enjoyable, sporting and competitive game. Thanks as always to the Table Officials and Referee.
The girls and Management team would like to wish Penny Costello a speedy recovery from injury and look forward to having her back on the court.

All were delighted when Penny joined the team on the bench for the game, Penny bringing the enthusiasm she always brings to the team!
The management team of Brenda, Leanne and William were delighted with the win, but more importantly the never give up attitude of the girls.

We look forward to the coming weeks and the undoubted twists and turns that the season will bring.

NATIONAL CUP

U18 Girls bonding and enjoying a well deserved meal at National Cup Qualifiers

Tralee Imperials faced some tough competition in the U18 Girls National Cup Qualifiers in Parochial Hall, Cork against Brunell and Waterford Wildcats.

Our girls put up a great battle on the court but ultimately the opposition was too strong. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the trip with the day full of laughter with the friends they have made and played with all the way through the underage ranks.

The coaching and management team of Tomas, Caitriona and Niamh are very proud of the girls’ attitudes and the effort they put in every week. Thank you to Lee Strand for their sponsorship.

Girls And Ladies Urged To ‘Give It A Go’ This Sunday At St Pat’s

THE benefits of being part of team sports will be promoted at a special recruitment day for girls and ladies at St Pats GAA Club this Sunday.

The ‘Give It A Go’ morning from 10.30am at the club grounds in Blennerville is open to all girls and ladies in the area and beyond, to come along to explore the health and social benefits of playing in a GAA team.

Health and Wellbeing Officer at St Pat’s GAA Club, Fiona Costello, explained the idea behind the event.

“It was inspired by a project from Cuala GAA teenager with the club, Aisling Nig Ruairc, who wanted to tackle the high dropout numbers in the sport,” said Fiona.

The Dublin teenager started the ‘Keeping Girls Playing Project’ and discovered one of two girls will drop out of team sport by the age of 13 and are three times more likely to give it up than boys are.

“We’re trying to change that statistic and to keep girls in the sport. Coupled with the enthusiasm of St Pats coach Norma Flynn, last year we restarted girls football in St Pats for Under 8 to Under 12s,” continued Fiona.

“Niamh Daly and Martina Dairo have done great work in keeping the minors and junior ladies teams going, but it was fantastic for us last year to see girls who restarted football or joined as newcomers, to enjoy all the benefits of team sport and all it has to offer, both physically and socially for mental health and for physical fitness and skills,” she said.

Young player Kayla O’Connor has been playing since she was five and now plays with the minor team and really enjoys it. She mentored the Under 10s last year and Fiona said she had a big impact on the younger players.

Eve O’Sullivan and Katelyn Laide started with the Under 12s and quickly developed skills to play in the county league while Sarah Greaney had played with the junior academy when she was younger but joined the Under 12s last year.

“I didn’t really like it when I was younger, but when I could play with all the girls last year I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot of skills and it’s good for keeping fit,” said Sarah.

“If you can keep up a team sport into secondary school you’ve got fitness, you have friendships, responsibilities, a structure, you’re all working towards the same goal,” said Fiona. “Being involved in team sports has so many benefits.”

Norma Flynn began coaching the Under 5s about four years ago and took over the new underage teams with Fiona last year.

“It was a great success last year and they did really well,” said Norma. “We have a lovely community here and we just want to try bring more girls into the club this year. It’s great for their confidence. Some of them were really quiet at the beginning but you could see the confidence growing as the year went on,” she added.

Girls born in 2013, right all the way up to ladies, regardless of their experience, are invited to St Pats on Sunday morning at 10.30am to find out more. For more check out their Facebook page.

New Dome Structure To Be Located In Town Centre For Rose Festival

.
Anthony O’Gara.

THE Rose of Tralee Festival Chief Executive has issued a letter clarifying some of the proposed changes and attractions coming for the Festival this year.

Anthony O’Gara said he wanted to clarify what he terms as misinformation being spread on social media regarding the changes to the event this year.

He also said a new Dome structure will be located in the town centre this year to host concerts and other events.

.

The open letter from Mr O’Gara reads as follows…

“Some misinformation has crept into the local public discourse, particularly online, in relation to our plans for Festival 2022.

We want to politely intervene to reassure local people, and our Rose family further afield, that the Festival is blooming anew after a two-year hiatus, and we have very exciting plans for the 2022 event.

Our plans for the 2022 Rose of Tralee International Festival include all the events that traditionally take place in town, the lights, parades, fireworks, family entertainment, street performances and much more.

They also include, moving the dome, be it on a slightly smaller scale of 1000 square metres, to a site in the centre of town, for five nights of concerts and festivity.

This is a very exciting development that will facilitate thousands of revellers by night, and children and families during the day.  That guarantees an exciting weatherproof experience, and it will bring the Festival back to the heart of the community in Tralee.

We made a decision in 2019/2020 to find an alternative to the Dome, which was costing us almost €250,000 annually.

Continued below…

.

That financial burden was creating unsustainable pressure for the Festival, whilst swelling the coffers of suppliers from outside the county.

That discussion was welcomed by our key partners, RTÉ, the Rose Hotel, and Kerry County Council along with the I.T.T. at the time, and we agreed that we would relocate to the brand new 2,000 square metre Kerry Sports Academy facility just built by the I.T.T.. Those discussions were ongoing when Covid closed us all down.

That decision is now even more compelling, as during Covid the I.T.T. and their Cork counterparts have established the MTU, which is such a positive development for Kerry and for Tralee.

We are now a university town! We have reengaged with the new entity, the MTU, and whereas our discussions are not concluded and are at a sensitive stage, we are confident that both parties can bring them to a successful conclusion.

In that event, we look forward to shouting from the rooftops during five hours of live TV in 2022, that the Rose of Tralee International Festival is coming from the newly formed Munster Technological University, allowing us to create a magical experience at this exciting venue for all the patrons who attend the Rose Ball and our Selection Nights.

We are also exploring some major opportunities to bring the crowds back to our Festival in Tralee during 2022, on a very big scale. Those plans are in the early stages, and we will not make any further comment on them for the time being.

We are so excited to have formed a new partnership with the local, four-star, family run, Meadowlands Hotel.

Whereas the popular Johnny Franks bar will continue to cater for the food and beverage requirements of regular customers, albeit with a Rosey tint added to their normal experience, the exclusive use of all the other facilities in the hotel will allow the Roses, RTÉ, our judges and our Rose team some quiet retreat. We will have the opportunity to plan, rest, and recuperate in that enchanting oasis on the Oakpark road.

We have enjoyed thirteen years on the Fels Point site, with four Hotel Groups, including the Rose Hotel for the past four Festivals.

Sadly, the commercial arrangements offered by the Rose Hotel were no longer viable for the Festival. We leave as friends, with great memories, and look forward to a wonderful experience in the four-star Meadowlands Hotel.

Finally, we are launching our Festival in Dublin on Friday next, the 11th of February. It is a very exciting time for us and whereas we have many challenges ahead, we are quietly engaging with business and civic authorities around the town and county to make sure that our long-anticipated return will be a huge success for everyone who has anticipated the August festivities, and something truly worth waiting for.

Very Best Regards, from the Rose of Tralee team.”

Brandon Car Park Closed To Public On Sunday To Facilitate Motor Show

.

MOTORISTS are being advised the Brandon Car Park in Tralee will be unavailable on Sunday, February 13 to facilitate the running of a fundraising car show.

Members of Kerry Motor Club are organising a static car show in Tralee town centre to raise funds for club member James Quinlan who faces a very difficult medical journey in New York.

The club has been permitted by Tralee Municipal District to close the car park to the general public from 10 am until 6 pm on February 13.

.

Cars parked overnight at the town centre car park will need to be removed by 9.30am on the day.

Road closure notices have been placed on the entrances and exits since last weekend to advise motorists that the car park will be closed for the day. Over 280 cars are expected to attend the show.

While the event is organised by Kerry Motor Club, every car club in the county including Killarney and District Motor Club and the Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club will display cars at the event.

Display cars include several rally cars, like a Ford Focus World Rally Car, the Ford Escort Mk2 that won the Killarney Historic Rally in the hands of Rob Duggan and a BMW E30 M3 rally car.

Kerry Motor Club’s John Liston is a close friend of the Quinlan family.

“We are overwhelmed with the support we are getting from the car community all over Kerry and beyond. I even heard there are members of London Irish Motor Club coming over for the weekend. This has the potential to be the biggest car show ever seen in Kerry.  We have a great team working hard to make it happen,” he said.

“We are very grateful to Cllr Terry O’Brien for his help in securing the use of the Brandon Car Park. His brother Tommy was a founding member of Kerry Motor Club 50 years ago and it’s great to see the O’Brien family still have an interest in car culture in Kerry.”

James, from Waterville, suffered a major brain haemorrhage on December 19 and remains in the intensive care unit in a Manhattan Hospital.

His friends in the Kerry motorsport community are running a series of events over the coming weeks including this car show at the Brandon Car Park in Tralee on February 13.

WORK is continuing on the Tralee-Fenit Greenway and on Monday workers began installing the underpass on the Spa to Churchill road.

The Council has closed the Ballymakegoge (Spa to Churchill) Road to public traffic  for a three week period until February 21.

The purpose of the road closure is to facilitate the installation of the underpass on the Tralee/ Fenit Greenway.

Diversions are clearly signposted and local access will be provided for emergency services and local residents.

Domnick Walsh was out with his drone on Monday and captured the workers putting the underpass in place.

The full Greenway is due to open by June, however it is hoped the Spa to Fenit section will be accessible prior to the Greenway’s full completion.
