Taking a look back at some of the news we brought you in December…

• KERRY College of Further Education and Training held its graduation in the Brandon Hotel on December 1, the first in person graduation since Kerry College was established by Kerry Education and Training Board in 2019.

Over 500 graduates from Kerry College’s Clash, Denny Street, Killorglin, Listowel and Monavalley campuses along with their families and friends gathered to celebrate the occasion.

• DECEMBER was a lucky month for Kerry players with five winners of €50,000 in the Euromillions Ireland Only Raffle.

The winning tickets in the National Lottery’s ’12 Draws of Christmas’ promotion were bought in Killarney, Rathmore, Ballylongford and Dingle (twice).

• GARDAI were urging young people to be vigilant after two mobile phone thefts in the town in early December.

A teenage boy in the Town Park and was approached by a group of youths. They asked to borrow his phone to make a call but then made off with the device.

The following night, a 13 year old girl had her mobile phone stolen by group of youths on Edward Street. Gardai said the incidents may be linked.

• A TRALEE man was honoured at the Water Safety Ireland’s National Annual Awards Ceremony.

John Timlin from Barrow received a Rescue Appreciation Award and Seiko Just in Time Award for rescuing a girl in Castlegregory during the summer.

• IT was confirmed that Tralee would host two Allianz National Football League games under lights next year,

Kerry will take on Armagh at 5pm on Saturday, February 25 in Tralee and on March 18, Roscommon come to town for a 7.30pm throw-in.

Before that, Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney is the venue on Sunday, February 5 for the clash with Monaghan which has has a 1.30pm throw-in.

• THE Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD officially opened 120 new local authority homes in Tralee on December 9.

Minister Foley joined the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, the Mayor of Tralee, and the Chief Executive of Kerry County Council at the openings at Ballyrickard, Croogorts, Lohercannon and Rahoonane.

21 new homes have been opened at Cluain na Géise in Ballyrickard, 30 at Croogorts (Cruaghoirt), eight at Rahoonane, and 61 units at Cluain Lár in Lohercannon.

• THE Festive Markets at the Island of Geese on Friday and Saturday December 9 and 10, were a huge success.

The evening markets, sponsored by Garveys Supervalu and Creative Ireland, attracted huge crowds despite the cold weather. Families browsed through the stands and enjoyed the entertainment throughout the evening.

• THERE were huge celebrations in Strand Road as Kerins O’Rahillys won a first ever Munster Senior Club Football Championship.

They beat Newcastlewest on a cold afternoon in Mallow to claim the title. They now face Kilmacud Crokes in the All-Ireland Club semi-final on January 8.

• TRALEE playwright Neil Flynn was awarded first prize for the 27th International Radio Playwriting Competition at a ceremony at BBC Broadcasting House, in London.

Flynn’s winning script titled ‘The Snowman’, inspired by the story of explorer Tom Crean’s efforts to save a fellow crew member, was chosen as the winning entry out of 850 submissions from more than 100 countries worldwide. It is the first time that the international award has been won by an Irish person.

• THE Christmas Day swims returned in earnest with the biggest seeing hundreds head into the water in Fenit.

The rain started to spit down just as noon struck but it didn’t matter to the masses who were in great form and ran to the water with gusto.
