CHURCHILL GAA has thanked its juvenile club sponsors for their continued support of the club.

The sponsors of the boys and girls teams from Under 5 to Under 18 level gathered at the club grounds at Churchill on Sunday.

Over the past number of years, the Juvenile academy has gone from strength to strength with increasing numbers of young people playing the game on a weekly basis.

The club now have a committed team of mentors at each age group who each week derive a huge sense of satisfaction from coaching the young people.

In addition to developing players and coaches the club plans to develop the facilities and equipment, and this would not be possible without the generosity and kindness of local businesses and the community.

On that note a team was formed this year led out by Ronan Falvey (U12 girls coach) and David Rolls (Juvenile Chairperson) to ensure all the children from U5 to U18 were fully kitted out. 310 children got shorts, half zips, t-shirts and socks a massive thanks to several supportive sponsors.

Sponsors of the teams are Beacon Capital, Gary O’Driscoll, Kerry Motor Works, Mid Cork Pallets, Oakview Lettings, Probuild, KK Hydraulics, Foley & Associates Solicitors, Reen Financial Services, Listowel & Ardfert Physiotherapy Clinic, Fitzgibbon Interiors, Cool Harbour, Rochestown Hotel, Ger Carmody, Sherry Fitzgerald Stephenson Crean, EAA Construction, Ronan Falvey and Access Ireland.

The occasion was the Churchill GAA ‘Lip Sing Battle’ and it was an amazing success with over 500 people attending.

As we told you yesterday (click here for previous story), John Murray got the nod from the judges, while ‘The Spice Boys’ were the most popular in the public vote.

Here’s some photos of the people off the stage who attended on a great night…

THERE was great fun last night as Churchill GAA staged its first ‘Lip Sing Battle’ at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

A crowd of around 500 people watched on as the contestants took on a number of different guises under the expert tutelage of Jackie O’Mahoney with Sinead Cotter as MC for the occasion.

The four judges — Fr Eamon Mulvihill, Michael Healy Rae, Declan Parker and Catriona O’Sullivan — had a tough task in deciding the winner but in the end they went for John Murray.

The public had a different take and the Spice Boys — Padraig Ryan, Cillian O’Shea, Barry Carmody and Stephen Bulman — won the popular vote. Scroll down for photos (we’ll have more tomorrow)

Churchill GAA Club News

The Churchill senior team.

Senior: Churchill came agonisingly close to pulling off one of the upsets of the season when they lost to Beaufort by a single point after extra time in the Junior Premier Championship Semi-Final in Milltown on Saturday evening. Churchill almost had the ideal start when Chris Hurley hit the crossbar with a rasping shot inside the first minute. In a very tight first half, the Churchill defence was immense with Sean Hamilton, Mitchell Holland and Gary Rolls not giving an inch. Cathal Rogers and Matt Finnerty were resolute in defence and were not afraid to push forward when the opportunity arose, while PJ O’Mahony put in fearless tackle after tackle. At the other end, Ivan Parker and Killian Fitzgerald kicked two beautiful points each, the pick of them from Killian, who won a kick out and ran straight at the Beaufort defence and knocked over from distance. Just before half time, JJ Prior was fouled when through on goal and Mike O’Brien tapped over the resultant free to give Churchill a 1 point lead at the break, 0-5 to 0-4.

Churchill began the second half with a goal from Mixer O’Brien to open a 4 point lead. This seemed to spark Beaufort into life as they had their best period of the game kicking 5 unanswered points to take the lead.

However, Churchill’s midfield duo of Mikey Brennan and Chris Hurley regained a grip at the middle of the park and two long range frees from ‘keeper Eoin O’Brien, one from about 60m, gave Churchill the lead again. The lead swung back to Beaufort with two points of their own, but a last minute free from Mixer meant the sides were level, 1-08 to 0-11, after 60 minutes and we were headed for extra time.

Churchill had the ideal start in extra time when Cathal Rogers won the ball at the sideline and danced his way through before delicately side footing to the back of the net. Sean Donnellan and Pa McCarthy in the half forward line were covering every blade of grass and were always available to take pressure off the back line. Churchill lost Killian Fitzgerald to a red card and Beaufort capitalised with 3 unanswered points to leave the sides level again at half time.

Churchill were out on their feet at this stage, but every player showed tremendous mental strength to drive on when their bodies were starting to give up. Churchill took the lead again when Mikey Brennan slotted over from distance, but Beaufort weren’t to be denied and two late points meant heartbreak for Churchill as we lost by the narrowest of margins, 2-09 to 0-16.

This, however, was an incredible performance from each and every player and they can hold their heads high after leaving everything on the field over 80 minutes. The focus now will be on the league and ensuring that we push for promotion this year, starting with our back game against Kerins O’Rahillys this Saturday evening at 7pm in Strand Road.

U14 Boys: On a wet and windy night in the Spa our U14s took on Beaufort in our 3rd game of the County League. Following narrow losses in our first two games this was a match we needed to win if we are to harbour any ambitions of making the Semi-Final stage. Beaufort played the first half assisted by a very strong wind and dominated possession for long periods. However our back line stood strong and limited our opponents to just 1-6 at the break. Harvey, Paddy, Ben and John Joe showed great leadership in the defence and with Eddie and Donagh S winning great ball around the middle we managed to get enough ball into our forwards to score 1-4 before halftime. In fact we had three or four opportunities to add to Dylan’s goal but failed to capitalise on them.

We started the second half strongly and scored 2-2 (including goals from Eddie &  David F)  without reply to put Beaufort on the back foot. Our teamwork and movement in the forwards was fantastic in this period and as a result of all the hard work the boys are putting in at training under senior player Ivan Parker.  At one point we led by ten points but credit to our opponents they kept battling and scored two late goals to guarantee a nervy finish. We managed to score a late point to end up winners by 3-14 to 4-7. Training continues at 7pm on Monday before our next outing against Castlegregory, which is again a must win if we are to reach the knockout stage of the competition.

U14 Girls: There was a fantastic first win this season for the U14 girls against St Pats this week. The first half saw Churchill playing against a strong wind, which initially saw St Pats gain the advantage with a volley of scores, but through hard work and playing as a well-oiled team, the girls fought back and put huge pressure on the opposition’s defenders. At half time Churchill trailed by three points on a score-line of Churchill 2-3 St.Pats 4-00.

Churchill started the second half the way they finished the first, putting St Pats on the back foot from the get go. With all of the girls firing on all cylinders the visitors struggled to respond.  Churchill scored another 2-03 in the second half, while keeping their opponents scoreless to run out winners by 4-06 to 4-00.  All the hard work from the mentors and players is paying off, well done to all.

Congratulations and well done to Cian Kearney, who was centre back for CBS The Green as they defeated arch rivals St Brendans Killarney to win the Russell Cup.

Churchill Lip Sing Battle: The wait is finally over. Our performers have been fine tuning their acts, their diva requests have all been provided for and we are all set for a huge nights entertainment in Ballyroe on this Sunday night, May 6th. This is an over 18s event and there are still a few tickets available from the organising committee. Have a look at our Facebook page, Churchill GAA Lip Sing, for more details.

WE can expect some amazing performances, slick moves, colourful costumes and lots of laughter next month when 11 acts take to the stage for Churchill GAA’s ‘Lip Sing Battle’.

Following on from their hugely successful ‘Strictly’ event in 2017, the club has gone for a different type of show and the contestants were raring to go when we met them on Friday night at The Oyster Tavern for the launch.

Jackie O’Mahoney has been working with the lads and lassies for the past month and said things are coming on nicely for the event which takes place on Sunday, May 6 at 8pm in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

Two of the four judges have been confirmed for the night and they are Michael Healy Rae and Catriona O’Sullivan, while the MC for the evening will be Sinead Cotter.

Churchill GAA Club News

rsz_1churchill_gaa_2Academy:

The excitement grows as the Siobhán Cotter tournament nears. The numbers at U6 are growing week-by-week so anyone new that wishes to join, please come along and make it known.
Our U8/U10 panels hosted Keel on Sunday morning. It was pretty breezy but at least the rain stayed away. Despite the conditions all players put in great performances and everything seems to be on track for the end of year tournament.
Thanks to Keel for making the trip and we intend to reciprocate the gesture in 2 weeks time with a return trip to Keel.
The U10s will continue to train on Wednesday at the slightly earlier time of 6:45PM in the Spa.
All academy ages of U6/U8/U10 will train next Sunday at 11AM in the Spa. The recent U14 Central League squad will be present to show off their trophy and for pictures.

U12:

Having already captured the county League title, our U12s played their last round of fixtures in the central league away to Ballyheigue on Sunday night. Unfortunately, our A panel lost on a score of 4-09 to 1-08 but our B-panel put in an impressive display to win by 0-05 to 4-12. Both panels should be extremely proud of their achievements this year.

U13:

Our U13 took part in the Austin Stacks Lee Strand Invitational tournament on Saturday. They were drawn in a strong group playing John Mitchel’s, Salthill and Clontarf. Churchill had a few players unavailable but still managed to hold their own in all the games losing by only a few scores. It was a great experience for the lads playing at that level and congratulations to Austin Stacks on a well organized tournament.

U14:

After their success in the Central League our U14 panel are awaiting a fixture to play the Brendan’s League Final.

U16:

The date of the final of the U16 Central League has yet to be finalized and the next round of the Tralee District League will be the 22nd September away to Austin stacks at 6:30PM.

Training is continuing as normal as communicated by the mentors.

Senior B

Churchill’s second team had a great victory in their tough quarter final away to St Senans on Friday evening. This fixture has always been a very physical affair and last Friday was no exception with both teams giving it their all. Playing into the breeze in the first half Churchill settled well with Jack O’Connell dominating in midfield and Tommy McCarthy providing the outlet in the full forward line. At half time Churchill led by 4 points to 2. Every ball was battled for in the second half with neither team willing to concede easy possession. The break through came mid way through the half when a high ball into the square was met by Derek Nolan, who rose like a salmon to fist the ball past the out rushing keeper. Liam Harty was like a man transported 20 years back in time covering every blade of grass up until the final whistle. Churchill will now face Skellig Rangers in the semi final. Keep an eye on the facebook page for time and venue.

OVER 100 kids between the ages of 6 and 12 are taking part in the Churchill GAA Cúl Camp this week.

The camp runs from Monday to Friday and will hope to hone the football skills of those making their way to Spa each day.

Taking up coaching duties were All-Ireland winners Andrew Barry and Jack Morgan. Barry is just fresh from Croke Park after picking up another All-Ireland with Kerry in the Junior final against Mayo last Saturday.

The GAA Cúl Camps have been a great success and represent good value for parents who get the kids out being active for several hours each day. Scroll down for photos…

A HEALTHY crowd of locals turned out in Spa Community Centre on Monday night to celebrate the history of Churchill Pearse Brothers GAA club and commemorate the 1916 rising.

Churchill has the distinction of being only one of two GAA clubs in Ireland named after the 1916 patriots Padraig and Willie Pearse.

The event included the reading of the proclamation, the raising of the tricolour and the singing of the national anthem.

Young performers from the community showed off their talent by performing 1916-related songs and poetry, while an exhibition of club photos and memorabilia was also presented by Churchill GAA Chairman James Wrenn.

It was a great event for the club and was well attended by people of all ages from the locality. Scroll down for photos…

Churchill Quiz Team Comes Second In Senior Scór All-Ireland Final

The Churchill quiz team who came second in the All-Ireland Scór competition at the weekend.

THE Brothers Pearse Club (Cnoc na hEaglaise) Quiz Team finished in 2nd place in the Senior Scór All-Ireland final, which took place in ‘The Gleneagle’, Killarney, last Saturday, April 2.

The Churchill lads scored 68 out of 80, which was great scoring/answering, but they were pipped by the Offaly team from Fear Bán, who lost out to them last year.

The dedicated and hard-working Churchill quiz men of Mícheál Mag Fhionnbhair (Gaynor), Seán Ó Flaithearta’, Pól Ó Cullota, and Alex Ó Dónaill were so close to becoming winners, but nonetheless, it was a great achievement which adds to two ‘firsts’ (’14, ’15) from the team.

Their success is great for the Tralee/Naomh Breandán GAA Boards and a further boost for Scór in the Greater Tralee area.

Minors. Our minor team played Ballymac on Sunday last and came out short in a very entertaining contest on a score line of 4-11 to 3-10.

After trailing by 8 points at half time, we rallied to show great character and levelled the match on 60 minutes only to concede a late point and goal in the last kick of the game.

Ballymac took advantage of their subs in the closing stages when our 13 man squad had given their all. We play Moyvane/Tarbert on Friday at home at 5pm so hopefully with a few more lads back, we should have more luck. A special word of appreciation to Jason Mortimer and Ciaran Murry from the under 16 squad who lined out and especially the latter who kept us in the game throughout.

Juveniles. The Juvenile Academy continued last Sunday and there was a great turnout once again. Training will continue next Sunday at 11am in the pitch in the Spa. The U6, U8 and U10’s will be taking part in the St Patrick’s Day parade in Tralee on Thursday. Details and meeting arrangements will be sent to parents of juveniles by text and email prior to the day.

Seniors. The Senior team begin the Co League away to Firies this Sunday 20th March at 2pm. It is important to get off to a good start so please come along to support the team.

rsz_1churchill_gaa_2Churchill vs St. Senans 26/9/15

Churchill 0-7 St. Senans 1-10

Churchill were well beaten by St. Senans in their penultimate Co. League game last Saturday. In a game where Churchill just couldn’t seem to get going, St. Senans were able to use their possession better and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Churchill scoring was sporadic through the first half, with Conor Daly the main threat scoring 3 points from play.

Half Time: Churchill 0-5 St. Senans 0-7

St Senans were first to score in the second half and stretched their lead to four points. They then got the goal that killed the goal, though there was more than a touch of fortune about it, as the ball ricocheted about the small square, before rebounding off a Churchill player into the net. That was the security St. Senans needed, who then withdrew most of their players behind the ball and made it very hard for Churchill to penetrate the defence. All Churchill had to show for their efforts were twqo pointed frees from Mike O’Brien. As St. Senans prepare for life in Division 3 next year, Churchill are now in a relegation dog-fight to avoid the last relegation place for the drop to Diviusion 5. They now have a must-win final game against Firies to secure their Division 4 status for next year.

Co. League Div 4.

Churchill 0-7 Ballydonoghue 1-14

Churchill were comprehensively beaten by Ballydonoghue last Sunday, though the scoreline probably doesn’t do justice to the Churchill team’s performance. The match was high on commitment and intensity but low on quality, and it tended to boil over at times, not helped by some controversial refereeing decisions.  Tempers even boiled over on the sideline at one stage, as the match was delayed by over 5 minutes in the second half while peace was restored.

Ballydonoghue, playing with the aid of a strong breeze, were first on the scoreboard with a free after 5 minutes, which they followed up with a point from play after a Churchill pass out of defence was intercepted. Ger McCarthy got Churchill off the mark, when he converted a free after Cillian Fitzgerald was brought down when through on goal.

Unfortunately, that was to be Fitzgerald’s last meaningful contribution as he had to retire with a shoulder injury soon after. Things went from bad to worse for Churchill, as they lost Cathal Rogers to a straight red card soon after.

These were two hammer blows for Churchill, from which they never recovered. Between then and half-time, Ballydonogue added on 7 more points, with their full-forward being Churchill’s tormentor in chief. Churchill weren’t helped by ill-discipline which resulted in the referee bringing a number of frees forward and making them far easier to convert.

Up front, Churchill played well against a stiff breeze, but most attacks resulted in shots dropping into the goalkeeper’s arms. Ivan Parker did manage to add a good point before half-time to give Churchill a glimmer of hope.

Half Time: Churchill 0-2 Ballydonoghue 0-9

The second half resumed in much the same fashion as the first half, when the Ballydonoghue full-forward fired over after 30 seconds.  Ger McCarthy pulled one back for Churchill after Parker was fouled.

The match was evened up in terms of numbers when Ballydonoghue were reduced to 14 men, when their corner back got his marching orders for a second yellow card.

Ballydonogue kept the scoreboard ticking over with two more points, which Churchill cancelled out with another free from McCarthy and a good point from play after 15 minutes from Des McCarthy, on as a sub for Ivan Parker. From then until the 28th minute of the second half, neither side scored, as the match became very niggly.

Mikey Brennan, fresh from his All-Ireland victory the previous day, tried hard and following a storming run from midfield, his shot was excellently saved by the Ballydonoghue keeper. That was to be Churchill’s last chance, as Ballydonoghue added 1-2 as the clock ticked down with a sole free from McCarthy in response.

Next up for Churchill is a home match against table-toppers Scartaglin this weekend, which has now become a must-win game if we are to have any hope of promotion to Div 3.

Full Time: Churchill 0-7 Ballydonoghue 1-14

Churchill: Paul O’Sullivan, Mitchell Holland, Shane Crowley, JJ Prior, Ivan Parker (0-1), Garett Walsh, Cathal Rogers, Mikey Brennan, Jack O’Connell, Brian Hill, Cillian Fitzgerald, Keith Rolls, Peadar Stack, Ger McCarthy (0-5, all frees), Ciaran Crowley

Subs used: Des McCarthy (0-1), Chris Hurley, Matt Finnerty, Shane Kenny

Next Match:

Churchill vs Scartaglin in Churchill at 2pm on Sunday 16th August. Please come out and support the team.

Juveniles:

Well done to all Juveniles who played challenge matches last weekend, including the U-10s who hosted Tarbert in the New Pitch in Churchill. Four quarters of 10 minutes were played in an 11-a-side format, to give all players match time. Churchill acquitted themselves very well. Having lost the first quarter playing into a stiff breeze against a skilful Tarbert team, they ran out winners in the remaining 3 quarters, displaying some great teamwork and skills. Thanks to Tarbert for travelling out to us.

Training as usual for the U-10s on Wednesday @ 7pm – look out for texts from mentors for other age groups.

rsz_1churchill_gaa_2Co. League Division 4:

Churchill had their first win of the County League campaign with a well deserved victory over Lispole in Lispole last Sunday on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-12.

Churchill went two points up after 4 minutes with points from play by Brian Hill and the impressive Conor Daly, but by the 11th minute, Lispole had scored 3 points of their own from play to lead for the only time in the game.

Play-maker Ivan Parker began to dominate the game and set up scores for others as he sacrificed his own scoring game for the good of the team. The crucial period of the first half came in the next 3 minutes when Churchill added 2 further points from play from Conor Daly and a goal from the boot of Cillian Fitzgerald.

Lispole added another from play after 16 minutes to leave the score at Churchill 1-4 to Lispole 0-4. Before half-time, Churchill were to add four more points to Lispole’s two and these came from Conor Daly (2), Cillian Fitzgerald and a brilliantly struck 45 from Ger McCarthy. Half time Churchill 1-8 Lispole 0-6.

It was going to be interesting to see how Churchill were going to set up for the second half playing against a strong wind.

Lispole were first out of the blocks and by the 6th minute had 3 points on the board but by the halfway stage, Churchill had steadied the ship with points from play by Daly (2) and Fitzgerald to leave the score Churchill 1-11 to Lispole 0-9.

The turning point of the half came in the 17th minute with a goal from Ger McCarthy. Both teams added 3 points each to leave the full time score Churchill 2-14 to Lispole 0-12.

This was an excellent  performance by the players and a great turn around by management. after their disappointing opening match. It sets us up nicely for our Junior Championship Match vs Na Gaeil in our new pitch next Sunday.

Junior Championship:

Churchill vs Na Gaeil  @ 2pm in Churchill (New Pitch) Sunday 19th April.

A large attendance is requested to support the team as we kick off our Junior Championship campaign in the first ever competitive game in our new pitch.

Juveniles:

The club got a grant of £6986 from the Munster Council and the school got a grant of £ 5,000.Again a huge thanks goes to Dermot Crowley for preparing the submission for the club and to Tim Murphy of the County Board for all his help.

National Draw

Following the success of the first ever GAA National Club Draw last year the GAA has announced it will become an annual event. The Draw raised in excess of €2.4m for clubs throughout Ireland last year. All funds raised were retained solely by each club to assist in funding the development and the promotion of our games. This year there will be a larger number of prizes, all of which are provided by the GAA.

The purpose of running the GAA National Club Draw is to assist clubs in their drive to fundraise much needed funds. Each club retains all the proceeds from the tickets sold by their club. Churchill did not benefit last year, as no tickets were sold. This year, we are asking people to buy a €10 ticket to go towards the running of the club. Next year is our Centenary Year, so additional funds will be required to subsidise the events which the club will be running.

There is no outlay for the club – we retain 100% of the revenue raised through tickets sales. There are some excellent prizes – go to…

http://www.gaa.ie/clubzone/national-club-draw/ for full list of prizes.

We would appreciate your support – tickets are available from any Committee Member. Closing date for purchase of tickets is January 23rd 2015.

GAA AGM

The AGM of the club will take place on Tues 9th December @ 8pm in Spa Community Centre.

As 2015 is an important year for the club, when we celebrate our Centenary and open our new field, we need people to help out with the various activities that will be happening.

While you may not be prepared to take on a position on the Club Executive, you may be willing to help out in other ways. Please come along to the AGM and lend your support to the club. We would be delighted if everyone who attended on the night the All Ireland tickets were distributed could attend on the 9th December.

If you are interested in filling any of the positions on the Executive, please contact Tracy O’Sullivan for a Nomination Paper.

CHURCHILL GAA folk gathered in The Oyster Tavern on Friday night for the annual race night fundraiser.

The event is one of the main fundraisers of the year for the club.

“We’ve been doing this for around ten years. It’s been very well supported with over 200 horses sold. We have about 25 sponsors on the night,” said Stephen Buttimer of the club.

The club’s season is coming to a close with just one match remaining on Sunday away to Castlegregory.

“We’re playing our last match in the county league Division 4 on Sunday. We still have a mathematical chance of promotion if we win but it’s down to other results. It’s a long shot to use horsing parlance but we’re still in it at this stage,” said Stephen.

It was also an occasion to honour Ivan Parker who won a Munster and All-Ireland medal with Kerry (the first for the club since Seamus Griffin in 1946) and Eoin O’Brien who was a member of the minor panel for the Munster championship.

Div 4 Co. League – Churchill 1-7 Cordal 0-10

Churchill welcomed Cordal to The Spa on Saturday night in a ‘must-win’ game for both teams to maintain their push for promotion.

The home team were boosted by Ivan Parker’s return to the Churchill forward line, having missed the last few games due to his involvement with the victorious Kerry Minor team.

However, Churchill were missing a number of other regulars and struggled in the early part of the game. Cordal had two points on the board before Churchill got off the mark, with a point from Parker, following good work by Garrett Walsh.

Parker was again on the scoresheet after 13 minutes and Churchill took the lead when Benny Dillon pointed a free following a foul on Cillian Fitzgerald (who was well shackled throughout the match by the Cordal full-back). Cordal immediately replied with two good points from play.

In the 21st minute, Fitzgerald, on one of the few occasions he managed to get free from his marker, rattled the crossbar with a thunderous shot, but the ball rebounded into play.

Dillon levelled matters with a free after 24 minutes and Ciaran Crowley got the last score of the half with a fine point from play, following good build up work from Cathal Rogers.

Half Time: Churchill 0-5 Cordal 0-4

Churchill needed to up the intensity in the second half, but it was Cordal who got the opening score, when their full-forward volleyed over the bar following a dangerous ball into the square.

Dillon restored Churchill’s advantage with another pointed free and after 7 minutes, Parker had a fine point from the right wing after some great blocking by the Churchill forwards.

Cordal were soon level again, as they showed great ability to respond to Churchill scores. In the 21st minute, Churchill looked to have made the breakthrough that was needed when a brilliant through ball from Mark O’Connor found Benny Dillon on the run and he finished to the net with authority.

With a 3 point lead and 7 minutes to go, Churchill should have been able to close out the game. Once again, Cordal came storming back and in a 4 minute spell before the end, they got 3 points to level the match once again. With time running out, both teams had a chance for a winner.

First, Cordal had a long range free, but their ‘keeper failed to find the range. With Churchill’s next attack, the ball was worked to Parker but his shot on the run drifted wide. That was to be the last action, as the referee blew for full-time.

For the second time in as many matches, a draw was the outcome when a win was required.

Three scores in 30 minutes was a very poor return but, in truth, Churchill failed to use their two man full-forward line of Parker and Fitzgerald to good effect, taking too much time on the ball, when a quick ball may well have paid dividends.

Promotion to Division 3 is still mathematically possible, but it requires both teams above us to lose their final game, while we need to beat Castlegregory away in our last game. Hope springs eternal.

rsz_1churchill_gaa_2Churchill vs Knocknagoshel Co. League

Churchill 2-9 Knocknagoshel 0-11

They say goals win games and this was never more true than last Saturday night in Knocknagoshel, where a weakened Churchill team put up a resilient performance in defeating the home team.

Short a number of regulars, the Churchill team showed great spirit in grinding out a victory. Churchill played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half and Benny Dillon opened the scoring with a free.

Knockagashel took control of the game after this and went ahead with a couple of frees of their own and a point from play. After 15 minutes, Churchill managed to put a good move together and this was finished in fine style with a point by Cillian Fitzgerald, just recently returned from the U.S.

On 21 minutes, Ciaran Crowley was put through on goal and he blasted over the bar, when a goal was on. Four minutes later, Mark O’Connor, who worked tirelessly all night, scored a great point from play from the right wing, after forcing a Knocknagoshel turnover as they broke out of defence.

During this time Knocknagoshel were guilty of some wayward shooting and racked up a number of bad wides. After 27 minutes, Cillian Fitzgerald drilled the ball low to the keeper’s right to get Churchill’s first goal of the night.

This was as the result of another intercept by Mark O’Connor and a great foot pass by Dara O’Shea. However, Churchill were guilty of giving away a needless penalty within 2 minutes.

Knocknagoshel’s midfielder Edmund Walsh stepped up but blasted the ball over the crossbar. Churchill got the final score of the half with a point by Fitzgerald, after more good build-up play. HT: Churchill 1-6 Knocknagashel 0-4.

Knocknagoshel, now playing with the aid of a strengthening wind, started the second half brightly and had the first point after 2 minutes. Churchill responded with a good long range free by Benny Dillon after 8 minutes.

Dillon was on the scoreboard again 4 minutes later with another free. Churchill won the resulting kickout and Mikey Brennan found Cillian Fitzgerald with a great ball and Fitzgerald again found the net for Churchill’s second goal.

This gave Churchill a comfortable 9 point lead which should have been sufficient to ensure victory. However, Knocknagashel never gave up and mainly through the efforts of Walsh, kept the scoreboard ticking over.

They got a point from play after 14 minutes and then after 21 minutes, they scythed their way through the Churchill defence, only for Paul O’Sullivan, returning from a long lay-off, to pull off a flying save from a flick by the Knock corner forward. Had Knock scored at that stage, the result might have been very different.

As it was, Walsh, who except for the penalty, was accurate from placed balls all night, knocked over the resultant 45, and followed it up with four more long-range points, 2 from play and 2 frees.

All Churchill had in reply was a solitary Dillon point from a free. Churchill were guilty of overplaying the ball throughout the match, often choosing a short passing game rather than delivering a long ball in to Fitzgerald, who was causing the home side all sorts of problems. Thankfully, the goals in each half ensured that Churchill had a few points to spare at the final whistle. Full time: Churchill 2-9 Knocknagashel 0-11.
