IT’S all over now…for the moment anyway.

An exhausting weekend in Killarney for candidates and their loyal supporters came to an end on Sunday night after all the successful politicians had been elected just after 8pm.

Brendan Griffin, Martin Ferris and John Brassil were hoisted on high by their supporters and the celebrations began in earnest, with the winning and losing candidates afforded to chance to  make a speech from the podium.

It was a sad day for the former Fine Gael Minister Jimmy Deenihan who lost his seat and retires after 30 years in politics. In his speech he thanked the people of Kerry for their support over the years and said he and Arthur Spring of Labour were partly victims of tough decisions made by the Government in the past five years.

Arthur Spring congratulated the winning candidates and praised his own team for their tireless work in the campaign. He said it was a difficult day for the party, but they would survive the result. He also paid tribute to Jimmy Deenihan whom he said has made an enormous contribution to society, not just in Kerry, but nationwide.

The winning candidates also paid tribute to their workers on the ground and had words of condolence and congratulations for candidates.

Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin said he will not let the people of Kerry down. He paid tribute to the losing candidates, especially his close friend Arthur Spring whom he said did fantastic work and was sure he would be back. He also paid tribute  to his mentor Jimmy Deenihan who gave him a chance. He said the former Minister was “the hardest working man I ever came across and wish you well for the future”.

Deputy Griffin also thanked his political team and especially his parents and his wife Róisín.

Fianna Fail’s John Brassil said it gave him no pleasure to be elected on the day that Jimmy Deenihan lost his seat. “He’s a true gentlemen of politics and a great friend of mine. You’ve served the people of Kerry well,” he said.

He thanked the Fianna Fail team in Kerry, the canvassers and especially Norma Moriarty, whose transfers, he said, brought him over the line. “We worked so well together. You’re a gentle and very kind woman, with a great future in politics and I thank you sincerely,” he said.

He had special thanks for his family for their support, including his mother Mary. “She had a very bad year of health and she’s here tonight. I hope today is the start of your return to good health,” he said.

Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris also had kind words for the losing candidates, especially Jimmy Deenihan, whom he said he has known over 40 years from the sporting fields to the political arena.

“We’ve had political rows but we’ve remained friends. He has 33 years as a servant of the people of Kerry and deserves recognition for that,” he said. He also promised the people of Kerry that he would continue to serve them to the best of his ability.

“I want to assure you, while there is breath in my body, I will do everything in my power to bring about a fairer and more just society and more equality for our people,” he said.

Danny Healy Rae said the people in Dublin just don’t get it and while the politicians pay big money to advisors, the only advisors they have are the people of Kerry.

He credited his father Jackie Healy Rae for the election victory and said they learnt everything from him. He also thanked the army of canvassers and workers on the ground who made the victory possible and also paid tribute to Jimmy Deenihan and the other losing candidates.

Last up was his brother Michael who  said it was a tough year for him after losing his mother and father and two great friends Arthur Lenihan and Bernard Collins.

He promised the people of Kerry that they would work tirelessly and do their best for the people of Kerry.

“You’re trusting us with your vote. In return, what ye’ll get is a sound, solid political service both from myself and Danny and from Cllr Johnny Healy Rae. We’ll do a simple thing always and that is our level best,” he said.

So ended Election 2016 in Kerry. What happens next is anyone’s guess but one thing is certain; no candidate wants to through that again for a while. Scroll down for more photos…

WE have our five TDs for the next Dail.

Just after 8pm this evening, Martin Ferris, John Brassil and Brendan Griffin were elected on the 11th count with sitting Fine Gael TD Jimmy Deenihan losing out.

Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin took the third seat followed by Sinn Fein’s Martin Ferris, then Fianna Fail’s John Brassil. There were scenes of wild celebration as presiding officer Padraig Burke deemed them elected.

It was a sad night for Jimmy Deenihan who bows out of politics after 30 years. Fianna Fail have a seat back in Kerry after their failure to win in either Kerry constituency last time out and Sinn Fein’s Martin Ferris, having looked in trouble in a TG4 poll a couple of weeks ago, showed his resilience to retain his place in the next Dail.

Now the question is will we have a government or will we be back to the polling booths in a few months?

Brendan Griffin (FG): 14,050 (1505)
Martin Ferris (SF): 12,964 (780)
John Brassil (FF): 12,792 (837)

Jimmy Deenihan (FG): 9,779

ELECTION UPDATE: It’s Almost Certain To Be Brassil, Ferris And Griffin

FINE Gael’s Jimmy Deenihan will need a miracle if he is to retain his seat in the next Dail.

After the tenth count in the Kerry constituency, he lies 4,106 behind his closest rival, Fianna Fail’s John Brassil – who now has 11,955 – for the last seat.

It is certain that Brendan Griffin and Martin Ferris will be elected as they are on 12,545 and 12,184 votes respectively. Arthur Spring of Labour has now been eliminated and his 6,139 votes are now being distributed.

The gap seems to wide to bridge for the Finuge man now, even if as expected, he gets a large amount of the Labour candidate’s vote. The eleventh and last count is due at 8pm and will almost certainly see Ferris, Griffin and Brassil join the Healy Rae brothers in the next Dail.

Tenth Count result (distribution of Norma Moriarty’s votes in brackets)

John Brassil (FF) – 11,955 (2,460)

Jimmy Deenihan (FG) – 7,849 (219)

Martin Ferris (SF) – 12,184 (462)

Brendan Griffin (FG) – 12,545 (1,149)

Arthur Spring (Lab) – 6,139 (262)

ELECTION UPDATE: Ferris Takes The Lead Over Griffin After Ninth Count

Election Padraig Burke 1

MARTIN Ferris has overtaken Brendan Griffin in the race for the remaining seats in the Kerry constituency after the ninth count.

After the distribution of Michael ‘Pixie’ O’Gorman and Brian Finucane’s votes, the Ardfert man received 1,139 votes. This put him ahead of Griffin who only received 173 votes.

Ferris now has 11,722 with Griffin on 11,396, some way behind the quota of 13,203. Brassil is next on 9,495 ahead of Deenihan on 7,630, a difference of 1,865 between them.

Norma Moriarty of Fianna Fail has now been eliminated and her 5,392 votes are being distributed. This is likely to see Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin (for geographical reasons) and John Brassil (party reasons) benefit more than Ferris or Deenihan so it doesn’t look good at all for the Fine Gael man. (see result below)

Ninth Count result (distribution of Michael ‘Pixie’ O’Gorman and Brian Finucane’s votes in brackets)

John Brassil (FF) – 9,495 (253)

Jimmy Deenihan (FG) – 7,630 (304)

Martin Ferris (SF) – 11,722 (1,139)

Brendan Griffin (FG) – 11,396 (173)

Norma Moriarty (FF) – 5,392 (140)

Arthur Spring (Lab) – 5,877 (276)

BRIAN Finucane and Michael ‘Pixie’ O’Gorman were eliminated after the eighth count which saw John Brassil extend his lead over Jimmy Deenihan.

The Fine Gael man is now 1,916 behind the Fianna Fail candidate from Ballyheigue as Brendan Griffin and Martin Ferris lead the way on 11,223 and  10,583 respectively and are virtually assured to be elected.

Now it gets very interesting as the votes of O’Gorman and Finucane are distributed. Ferris will probably be the main beneficiary of their votes and could even see him overtake Griffin after Count Nine. (see result below)

Eighth Count result (distribution of Michael Fitzgerald’s vote in brackets)

John Brassil (FF) – 9,242 (105)

Jimmy Deenihan (FG) – 7,326 (69)

Martin Ferris (SF) – 10,583 (93)

Brian Finucane (AAA/PBP) – 1,429 (168)

Brendan Griffin (FG) – 11,223 (224)

AFTER the seventh count, things haven’t changed that much with Jimmy Deenihan still chasing the pack.

The Fine Gael man is 1,880 votes behind Fianna Fail’s John Brassil with Brendan Griffin and Martin Ferris still in a great position to be re-elected. They are now distributing Michael Fitzgerald of the Green Party’s vote as he has been eliminated. (see result below)

AFTER the sixth count in the Kerry Constituency, it looks at this stage like Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin, Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris are certain to be elected with Fianna Fáil’s John Brassil taking the last seat at Jimmy Deenihan’s expense.

Brendan Griffin is on 10,872 with Martin Ferris next on 10,418 followed by Brassil on 9,005. Jimmy Deenihan is on 7,168, with a gap of 1,837 to make up.

There’s still a way to go but Deenihan looks to have lost too much ground and it would take something special for him to close the gap to the Ballyheigue man.

Donal Corcoran of Renua has now been eliminated and his votes are being distributed.

Sixth Count result (distribution of Grace O’Donnell’s vote in brackets)

John Brassil (FF) – 9,005 (48)

MICHAEL Healy Rae expressed his thanks to the people of Tralee for their votes and said he and his brother will be fighting for the town when they take their places in the Dail.

Despite coming from the south of the county, Michael polled over 4,000 first preference votes in the area, second only to Martin Ferris’ vote.

Speaking to TraleeToday.ie in the wake of his brother Danny’s election this morning, Michael thanked the people of Tralee and said the work starts now.

“I’m deeply indebted to the people of Tralee as indeed I am to people in all other areas of the county. We’d an army of canvassers in the town and we visited every house. We had Sam Locke, the respected and hardworking councillor, with me who was a big addition and other individuals who really put the shoulder to the wheel for me,” he said.

As regards the future, we asked him what can he do for the town.

“I see an awful lot of things that need to be addressed in Tralee. Unemployment is a big issue and there are too many vacant shop units in the town centre. We’ll have to put our heads together to revitalise the town centre. I, along with the team with me, will work tremendously hard for the people of Tralee. There’s problems and things to be done and it all starts now,” he said.

IT has been a simply remarkable weekend for the Healy Rae clan as they will have two representatives in the next Dáil.

Of course this has generated a lot of discussion on Twitter. Here’s what people were saying…

WELL it took some time, but Michael Healy Rae was eventually elected with the biggest first preference vote in the country on 20,378 votes on the first count on Saturday night in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre in an historic night for Kerry politics.

It was initially expected that the first count would come in at around 7.30pm but at about 9.50pm it was announced that a full recheck of first preference was to take place so the count was delayed until 11.20pm.

When returning officer Padraig Burke eventually announced the result of the first count, Micheal Healy Rae was elected with an incredible total of 20,378 with a huge surplus which should see his brother Danny on 9,991 elected on the second count in the morning.

Sinn Fein’s Martin Ferris is expected to be elected tomorrow after getting 9,458 and Brendan Griffin, as it stands, is in a good position to retain his seat with 9,674. However, his party colleague, Junior Minister Jimmy Deenihan on 6,489 will face an uphill battle against Fianna Fail’s John Brassil who has 8,156.

Arthur Spring is sure now to lose his seat having just managed 4,813 while Norma Moriarty managed a good vote of 4,348.

The counting has ended for the night and will resume at 9am tomorrow morning.

The full first count result is;

VOTERS are continuing to cast their votes today in the general election and there was a healthy enough turnout in town in the mid-afternoon.

By lunchtime there was reports of a turnout of around 15% in some areas in town, but this had doubled by 3pm  in some stations we visited.

We took a quick spin around town between 3pm and 3.45pm and found the turnout was running around 30 per cent in Tralee in the four polling stations we visited.

In Holy Family two booths we visited had a figure of just under 30%. Across the field in Scoil Eoin, Balloonagh, it was a similar story with one booth at 28% and another at 30%.

There was a bit of a difference in the three booths we enquired about at CBS Primary, with one at 27%, one at 30% and the other at 34%.

Finally on the east side of town, the average of all booths taken at 3pm in Presentation Primary showed turnout at 26%, although when we called at 3.45pm things had picked up with one of the booths at 37%.

Of course the real surge will begin after 6pm this evening, but it looks like there will be a good turnout in Tralee for Election 2016.

Paddy Power’s odds also see Martin Ferris (SF) going from 1/8 to 8/15, while Arthur Spring (Lab) has also drifted in the market to 13/8.

Ferris Blasts Government’s Health Record As Minister Varadkar Arrives In Town

Michael Pixie O'Gorman Sidebar

University Hospital Kerry sign 3SINN Féin TD Martin Ferris has blasted Fine Gael’s record on health as Minister Leo Varadkar prepares to visit the newly renamed University Hospital Kerry today.

“Fine Gael’s legacy in health is chaos in emergency departments, people waiting on hospital trolleys for days on end, endless waiting lists, and children denied essential treatments,” said Deputy Ferris.

“There were 30 people waiting on trolleys at the A&E in Kerry General for the first four days of this week. Ambulance call out times have cost lives and put many others at risk in Kerry,” he said.

.

“Under Fine Gael’s watch the chaos in our health services has gotten worse. Our health care staff and emergency services are being forced to work in extremely difficult circumstances while patients are not getting the treatment they deserve.

“Fine Gael’s has scrapped their promise to deliver universal health insurance. Their promises to reduce hospital waiting lists and the trolley crisis have been broken. Their promises to deliver free GP care is gone. So is their promise to end prescription charges. It’s one broken promise after another,” said Deputy Ferris.

“It’s time we called stop on Fine Gael’s plans to privatise our health services. Sinn Féin has a fully costed, deliverable plan for health based on the fundamental belief that people should be able to access health care as a right, on the basis of need,” he said.

Minister from Health Leo Varadkar is due at the hospital in Tralee at 1pm to officially announce the name change.

Election 2016: Bin Charges And Rent Allowance Just Two Of The Issues Facing Tralee’s Poor

St Vincent de Paul, Tralee Area President, Junior Locke,  feels access to TDs, along with bin charges and rent allowance, are major issues for people facing poverty in town.

“The big one would be rent allowance,” said Junior Locke.”The amount that is allocated to people and getting rent allowance accommodation itself. Getting a place that will accept rent allowance is extremely hard now,” he said.

“That’s an issue which is mirrored all over the country. I know in the main cities they’re having an awful time altogether but we’re finding it tough as well too in Tralee. We met a girl who was renting a place over by Manor before Christmas that cost her €600 a month and within three weeks it went up to €700 a month,” he said.

Continued below…

Donal Corcoran Insert
.

“That shows there is no control or regulation for rent. Landlords can decide when they want to increase the rent by and there’s nothing that can be done about it,” he added.

Bin charges recently have become a hot-topic in town and St Vincent de Paul have been hearing back from the public about the issue.

“A lot of people are coming to us over it. It’s that extra bit that is being being added all the time. Every single time there is an extra €3 or €4 being taken out of peoples wages,” said Junior.

“Two years ago they would have been paying €7.50 for their bins now that has doubled. Because even if you put your bin every two weeks you’re still going to be charged that €3 a week standing charge.”

Junior also said access to some public representatives has been a difficult in this Dáil term.

“I would call on our TD’s and Councillors as well to support more initiatives. There was a couple of TDs over the last five years who were easy to access, but then there was a few that were not. I would like it if our TDs were more accessible to us,” he said.

Renua Candidate Says Childcare Costs In Kerry “Like A Second Mortgage” For Families

Kerry’s Renua candidate, Donal Corcoran.

THE Renua Ireland candidate for Kerry, Donal Corcoran, has said that the cost and availability of quality childcare in Kerry is one of the biggest issues facing young families in Kerry.

The cost of childcare is the equivalent to a second mortgage and in some cases and while there is tax relief in relation to some mortgages there is no tax relief for childcare, says the Tralee-based candidate.

Renua Ireland is proposing tax relief for childcare and the establishment of community crèches and have launched their childcare policy today to address this issue.

Healy Raes Map Out Where Each Of Them Wants Their No.1s…Literally

WHILE vote management has been going on for years in political parties, the Healy Raes are taking it to a fine art…or cartography in this case.

They have released a colour-coded map of Kerry which shows precisely which areas they are looking for No.1 and No.2 votes for Michael and Danny.

It’s a ‘Green’ zone for Danny who wants the No.1s in east Kerry stretching from Castleisland town, down to Rathmore, across to Killarney and up to (but not including) the towns of Killorglin and Milltown.

The rest of the county belongs to the ‘Gold’ of Michael.

With the latest poll suggesting Michael has 33% of the vote and Danny with 4%, a properly managed vote could see Danny over the line from Michael’s surplus.

Michael has dismissed the Ipsos/MRBI poll as inaccurate due to it being taken just after Danny’s announcement he was to run and the low percentage attributed to Sinn Fein’s Martin Ferris, but all the same they must be happy with the results.

TÁNAISTE Joan Burton was in town on Tuesday to lend her support to Labour candidate, Deputy Arthur Spring ahead of Friday’s week’s election d-day.

To the disappointment of national media assembled, due to persistent, heavy rain, a chance for the Tánaiste to really get out in about in Tralee with Deputy Spring was missed.

Still, in the shelter of the newly built Blennerville National School, the Tánaiste who was fresh from the RTE Leaders Debate the previous night in Limerick, met staff and pupils.

During the visit, Blennerville kids performed a reworking of an Ed Sheeran hit as gaeilge and after, she and her entourage headed for The Mall to meet shoppers.

With an Ipsos/MRBI poll yesterday evening putting Arthur Spring at 8%, it looks like there’s a lot of work to do if Labour are to retain their seat in Kerry.

New Poll Reveals Healy Raes Are In Great Position To Get Two Seats

Michael and Danny Healy Rae will be happy with the latest MRBI Poll.

A NEW poll, just released, shows the possibility of Michael Healy Rae being joined by his brother Danny in the next Dáil is a very real one.

The results of the Ipsos-MRBI poll – conducted last Thursday and Friday just after Danny Healy Rae declared he was running –  for the television station TG4 were revealed earlier tonight.

Fine Gael will be happy with the poll, but the results suggest Sinn Fein’s Martin Ferris and Labour’s Arthur Spring are at risk of losing their seats.

It shows Michael Healy Rae on 33% and his brother Danny on just 4%. However, with many of Michael’s second preferences expected to go to his brother, it could put him in a great position to get a seat.

Fine Gael TDs Jimmy Deenihan and Brendan Griffin are each on 13pc putting both of them in a good position.

John Brassil of Fianna Fail is on 11% with running mate Norma Moriarty on 6%. Labour’s Arthur Spring is on 8%, just ahead of Sinn Fein’s Martin Ferris on 7%.

With over week to go, there’s a lot of work to do for candidates before the real poll on February 26.

WHILE the flyers are, well, flying through the letterboxes and posters are aplenty on poles around town, a Kerry candidate in the forthcoming election has taken a more novel and environmentally friendly way of getting his message across in his home town.

Michael ‘Pixie’ O’Gorman from Ballybunion is running as an independent candidate on the Right2Change platform and he used the beach yesterday afternoon to canvass the locals.

Pretty cool way of doing things we have to admit.

LOCAL politicians showed showed some pretty good skills at a special 5-a-side soccer match on stage at Siamsa Tíre on Sunday morning.

The unusual location was apt, as the event was held to launch Tralee Musical Society’s new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Beautiful Game’, which will be performed at the venue next month.

Election candidates, John Brassil (FF), Arthur Spring  (Lab) and Grace O’Donnell (FG) were joined by Pa Daly and Toireasa Ferris of Sinn Fein in a surprising cross-party alliance that yielded a result on the day.

They faced Rose of Tralee Elysha Brennan with TraleeToday.ie columnist Orlagh Winters, Tralee Chamber Alliance President John Drummey,  Radio Kerry’s Andrew Morrissey and Rose Escort of the Year Shane Kenny making up the opposing side.

There was plenty goalmouth action and drama – referee James Finnegan gave a penalty to each side and brandished a couple of cards – but in the end the politicians prevailed, winning 4-2 in front of a good crowd of onlookers and cast members.

Director of the forthcoming production, Oliver Hurley, said he was very excited about the year ahead for the Society and was delighted to get the opportunity to put on a show of such passion and relevance in Siamsa.

Cast members then took to the stage and performed two songs from the production (see short video of an excerpt from one of the numbers below).

Tralee Musical Society chose to produce a show that they felt was very apt for the year that’s in it, and has a sense of patriotism about it. Combining sports, politics, and a Romeo and Juliet romance, it is an Irish story about young people on the verge of adulthood, wanting to love, play football and lead normal lives in a city dominated by violence and hatred.

The Beautiful Game is a West End hit which depicts the story of the troubles in Northern Ireland. It is a humourous, dramatic, and powerful show.

Set in 1969 Belfast, this original musical concerns a local young Catholic football team, whose lives are derailed by the Irish Troubles. Focusing on five of the teams’ players, the priest who manages them, and the girls with whom the lads are involved with, this show is filled with dark humour and teenage awkwardness.

The Beautiful Game will be performed in Siamsa Tire from March 30 to April 3. Call Siamsa on 066-7123055 for ticket details.

Somebody Seems To Think Donald Trump Has Joined The Kerry Election Race

IT seems someone in town feels Donald Trump should be kept in mind for a No.1 ahead of election day.

This photo was not taken in some square-shaped ‘fly over state’ in the US, but on the Dingle road just past the roundabout to the Aqua Dome.

In the photo, accompanying ‘The Donald’ in sign form, is Michael Healy Rae’s poster, a man not short on razzamatazz and colourful campaigns himself.

We’re not sure if Trump’s mud-slinging form of electioneering is necessarily what the political discourse requires in Kerry though. Anyway, he’s a Clare man now after buying Doonbeg Golf Club a few years back.

DANNY Healy Rae has declared himself as a candidate in the next general election.

In a move which will shock the political world, the brother of Michael Healy Rae, who is strongly tipped to top to poll in Kerry, will bid to get two seats for the Healy Rae clan.

The independent councillor in the South Kerry Municipal District lodged his election papers before the noon deadline today at the Courts Services offices in the Centrepoint building in Tralee.

He is the 16th candidate to declare.

IF the election went by the votes cast by those present at a Tralee Chamber Alliance event this morning, Arthur Spring wouldn’t have much to worry about in two weeks time.

Many of Kerry’s candidates in the forthcoming General Election gave their views on a number of local and national issues at a special event in the Manor West Hotel on Thursday morning.

Organised by Tralee Chamber Alliance and supported by AIB, the breakfast event allowed business people in town to put a series of questions to the candidates and to give their own votes by secret ballot as to who they want to be elected in Kerry in two weeks time.

MC John Drummey went around to the tables where candidates were asked about the primary issues of jobs in town, vacant premises, the reduction of the 23% VAT rate, funding for tourism, broadband, support for local entrepreneurs and much more.

In a lighter moment, each candidate present was asked if they had to vote for another candidate in Kerry, outside of themselves or their own party, who would they give their No.1 to.

Fianna Fail’s John Brassil, after much hesitation, said he’d probably vote for “my cousin”, Labour TD Arthur Spring. His party colleague Norma Moriarty said the same.

Michael Fitzgerald of the Green Party plumped for Donal Corcoran of Renua who duly returned the favour. Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin and Jimmy Deenihan opted for their coalition partner Arthur Spring, who in turn said he’d opt for one of the Fine Gael candidates.

This was picked up on by Michael Healy Rae who said: “Well if there’s one thing we’ve learnt this morning, it’s that Arthur Spring is going to head the poll!”

The south Kerry man said he’d give the vote to Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris.

At the end of the meeting the results of the secret ballot were given and saw local man Arthur Spring in first, Minister Deenihan in second, John Brassil on third, Michael Healy Rae in fourth, while fifth was Brendan Griffin.

With Over Two Weeks To Go Here’s How The Bookies Think The Election Will Go In Kerry

Cycling Ad Insert 1

Michael Healy Rae is a dead cert to be re-elected according to bookies.

OPERATING with the perceived wisdom that “the bookies are always right”, with just two and a half weeks to voting, we had a look at how the 2016 General Election betting is shaping up for the new five seat Kerry constituency.

According to Paddy Power, they’re banking on business as usual for four current TDs to stay in the job.  Fianna Fail’s John Brassil is also odds-on to be elected, but Labour’s Arthur  Spring and Fianna Fail’s Norma Moriarty are still very much in the mix.

Continued below…

Ashe Hotel Insert
.

The current betting has Michael Healy Rae storming back in the doors of Leinster House looking a dead cert to retain a seat at 1/50. You won’t get much value on Jimmy Deenihan either at 1/33 or Martin Ferris (1/20) while Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin is less of a certainty at 1/7.

Following the withdrawal independent Tom Fleming it’s all to play for that final seat.

The bookies have John Brassil at odds-on for the fifth seat at 2/9, with sitting TD Arthur Spring at 6/4. Fianna Fáil’s Norma Moriarty is at 9/4 and then there’s a big gap to the rest of the field.

But two and a half weeks is a long time in politics!

Meanwhile, Michael Healy Rae is favourite at 6/4 with Boylesports to get the most first preference votes in the  ahead of Enda Kenny at 2/1. Paddy Power though put the Kerry man at 15/8 second favourite, just behind Michael Lowry at 13/8.

Here’s the Kerry betting…

1. Michael Healy-Rae (Ind) 1/50
2. Jimmy Deenihan (Fine Gael) 1/33
3. Martin Ferris (Sinn Fein) 1/20
4. Brendan Griffin (Fine Gael) 1/7
5. John Brassil (Fianna Fail) 2/9
6. Arthur Spring (Labour) 6/4
7. Norma Moriarty (Fianna Fail) 9/4
8. Brian Finucane (AAA-PBP) 33/1
9. Grace O’Donnell (Fine Gael) 40/1
10. Michael O’Gorman (Ind) 40/1
11. Kevin Murphy (Ind) 40/1
12. Mary Fitzgibbon (Ind) 80/1
