THERE was a great turnout at St Pats GAA club grounds in Blennerville on Sunday as the club held its Health Club Launch and Family Fun Day.

St Pats has become part of the Irish Life Healthy Clubs nationwide GAA initiative. Families from club and the community turned out to support our event and thankfully the rain stayed away so everyone could enjoy the activities.

Parents and Bridget O‘Riordan from the club coordinated the childrens food and there was a great display of healthy options to choose from. They also had delicious options from Muerte BBQ and 2-Beans-in-a-Box.

There was a very competitive U11 boys vs U12+ girls match, Tug-of-War challenges, slow bicycle races, welly throwing and much more.

The Intergenerational Rounders proved a big hi for all 50+ that joined in the two matches and the club plans to keep the rounders going on a monthly basis on a Sunday afternoon. It was a fantastic community event and well done to all involved. Scroll down for photos…

IT was a great afternoon of family fun in the Town Park on Saturday for the Meadowlands Hotel Fancy Dress Fun Run.

Part of the Tír Na nÓg festival taking place around the town this weekend, the event drew a plethora of ‘Annas’, ‘Elsas’, ‘Batmen’, ‘Spidermen’ and many more great costumes from participants.

Hundreds gathered to watch Linda Flanagan of Zumba Salsa Tralee teaching kids how to dance while the characters from Kingdom Party Pals also joined in.

The race itself was a short affair as kids dashed around a short circuit getting a memento for their achievement.

It was a great day and much credit must go to Dejan Kolic and Sophia O’Brien who organised the entire day as part of their final project in IT Tralee.

Well done guys!

Photos: Sun Shines For St Pat’s Family Fun Day

THERE was a great sense of a community coming together in the name of fun on Sunday, as St Pat’s GAA club hosted their annual family day.

Hundreds turned up in the autumn sunshine for an afternoon of music, puppet shows and games, with plenty food and refreshments laid on for everyone.

“We’ve been running it for the last four years,” said Club Chairman, James Costello. “It’s a day to reward the club members for putting in the long hours and also for the kids to get together at a social event to have a bit of fun.”

“We have the sumo wrestling, skills tests, three legged race, long puck and we play the final of the internal club league as well.”

The family day was due to take place last Sunday but was postponed due to the passing of club stalwart, Tony O’Donoghue.

“Tony was the lifeblood of the club. He was the guy holding the whole thing together,” said James. “We postponed it last week due to his death and we gave him a good send-off but it’s great to see so many of his family here. We had a walk earlier and a collection in aid of the Palliative Care Unit of the hospital in his memory.”

A great day and well done to all the volunteers who helped make the event so special.

THE residents of Ballyrickard Court got together on Sunday for a great afternoon of family fun.

It was all thanks to the Infinity Youth Group who are made up of young people from the Spa Road/Ballyrickard area.

“We decided to hold the fun day to get the community together,” said Michaela Brosnan, one of the group leaders.  The group received funding from Tralee Credit Union last month through the Youth Union scheme, so they had €300 towards the day.

“There was a bouncy castle, face-painting, spud and spoon races, a dog show and loads more going on. We also had the KDYS Youth Cafe Bus there and we held a FIFA 2014 tournament,” she said.

“It was a great day and one resident in the estate told me it was the first time she got together with fellow residents in the three years since she moved into the estate so she was delighted,” said Michaela.

Well done to all involved, especially the Infinity group who consist of Georgina O’Reilly and Michaela Brosnan and members Shannon McInerney, Lauren Moriarty, Niamh Brosnan and Leanne Moriarty.

RESIDENTS in Criolar na Mistealach turned out in force on Saturday for a family fun day to get the community together.

There was food and refreshments, a bouncy castle and a DJ there to entertain all and everyone enjoyed themselves in one of Tralee’s newest estates.

“We’re only after starting out here in the estate about 18 months,” said James O’Sullivan, Chairman of the Criolar na Mistealach Residents Committee.

“We had a Christmas party and that turned out brilliant so we decided to have a family fun day. It’s going fantastic, everything went off perfect and we had a blessing of the estate with a DJ and bouncy castle for the kids,” said James.

“There’s 18 houses here in the estate and we collect €5 from each resident towards the cost of the party. It’s all to try to get people together for the good of the community. Many of the residents would be originally from the Mitchels area but we have new arrivals of other nationalities also,” said James.

A FANTASTIC family fun festival will take place in Ballyheigue next month with loads of free entertainment and a fashion show extravaganza.

The 12th annual Ballyheigue Summer Festival takes place from Sunday, July 6 to Sunday, July 13. This year’s programme is packed with lots of fun for everyone of every age, and one of the numerous highlights will be the Fashion Show in the Community Centre on Wednesday, July 9.

Themed on both Summer Style and Getting Racy, the show will feature the latest looks from all of Kerry’s top boutiques and designers and admission is only €10 including complimentary drinks reception.

With two Best Dressed Ladies Prizes, spot prizes and the finale of Ballyheigue’s Best Male Stylist 2014 it promises to be a great night. Both the fashion show and the raffle are in aid of Jackie Crowe.

Participating shops include Carraig Donn, Friendex and Miss Captain (Claire Murphy), JJam headwear, Divas & Dudes, Nuala McCarthy Womenswear, Shaw’s Department Store, D3 Menswear Tralee, Rockalilly, So Elegant HeadPieces, Emer O Mahony Millinery, Aoife Hannon Millinery, Jasmine of Killarney & Tralee, Annburys Boutique, Pamela Scotts, DV8, Ryles Menswear and Michael Guineys. Hair is sponsored by Colette’s Salon and make up by Doon Beauty.

There will be two Best Dressed Lady Competitions on the night. The first, judged and sponsored by Linda Murphy from Rockalilly Boutique Tralee, will be for the most original and glamorous Summer Style!

The second, judged and sponsored by Diane Jeffers from Jasmine Boutique Tralee, will be for the lady with the most Racy style! Also well known fashionista, style icon and TraleeToday.ie fashion columnist Orlagh Winters will be there on the night to give tips on what to wear to win at the races this Summer.

Of course, no fashion show in Ballyheigue would be complete without showcasing the style of its most famous fashion designer, Don O’Neill, who is creative director of THEIA in New York.

The night will also feature the finale of the Search for Ballyheigue’s next Top Male Stylist. Four well known men from Ballyheigue will each style a top model from the Kerry’s top award winning agency, Upfront Model Management, using the latest collections for the Summer from Carraig Donn.

Each budding male stylist will then present his model on the runway and talk through his look. The audience will decide who wins. It promises to be unmissable and lots of fun too. Ballyheigue native and top DJ, Ray Stack, will both MC and produce the fashion show. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are only €10 and will be available on the night.

“Ballyheigue Summer Festival is in its twelfth year and has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2003,” said John Brassil, Mayor of Kerry, and Chairman of the Ballyheigue Summer Festival.

“This year promises to be another exciting and fun filled event with a programme of activities that caters for the tastes of all ages and interests. The festival is family centred with activities running throughout the week for children, teenagers and adults. We make the most of our natural assets and this means that Ballyheigue’s beautiful Blue Flag beach accommodates an array of events including sand castle competitions, Kids Fun at the Beach and Beach Treasure Hunt, plus the King of the Beach 5km Run and the Slip to Shore 2km swim for adults,” he said.
