THE Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry SFC Round 3 double header at Austin Stack Park produced two very different games on Saturday evening with mixed fortunes for players from Tralee clubs.

First up were St. Brendan’s taking on Shannon Rangers and it proved to be a convincing win for the side featuring players from John Mitchels, Na Gaeil, Churchill, Ardfert and St Pat’s.

St Brendan’s James Duggan punched in a goal in the first minute which set the tone for the scoring fest to follow. When Brandon Barrett netted on eight minutes it was 2-3 to 0-1  and the (further) north Kerry divisional side were in trouble.

They gamely tried to stay in touch, but a succession of scores from Ivan Parker, Eoghan O’Brien, Diarmuid O’Connor, Niall Sheehy and James Duggan ensured the Tralee area side went in 2-11 to 0-5 at the break.

The second half saw more of the same and when Jack Barry goaled on 39 minutes to make it 3-14 to 0-7 it was a true rout.

James Duggan got St Brendan’s fourth goal on 47 minutes and Gerald O’Sullivan’s goal ten minutes later for Rangers was scant consolation. It finished 4-22 to 1-12.

The next game between Kerins O’Rahillys and East Kerry would prove the polar opposite in terms of closeness, but from the first 12 minutes you wouldn’t have thought it would turn out that way.

Goals from Barry John Keane, Karl Mullins and Jack Savage had the Tralee side 3-01 to 0-2 ahead. But East Kerry came back and by half time they had reduced the deficit to two, 3-02 to 0-9.

The divisional side received a boost when a red card was issued to Kerins O’Rahillys’ player Barry John Keane with 24 minutes to go. But the Strand Road outfit responded by going further in front with points by Tommy Walsh and Jack Savage to lead by 3-4 to 0-10 with a quarter of the game to go.

But when David Clifford is in your team, you always have a chance and with a brace from the Fossa maestro and points from Mike Foley and Liam Kearney, East Kerry were one up with a minute of normal time to go.

In a frantic injury time period, Rahillys equalised and went ahead only for East Kerry to level again to force extra time with a full time score of 3-6 to 0-15.

There was little to separate the teams in extra-time and  at the break it was level at 3-9 to 0-18.  And it wasn’t until one minute to go that David Clifford stepped up to put East Kerry one point ahead.

The Kerry star sealed the win with another point from play in injury time to break Strand Road hearts. Scroll down for photos…

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

Seniors:

A blistering start that yielded 1-02 in the opening five minutes was the catalyst for this comprehensive win which in truth could have been much more if we had taken our many goal chances.

Con Barrett won the throw in and set off on a run towards the Mitchels goal and when his initial shot  was parried, Con was following up and made no mistake for the opening score, all inside 20 seconds; further scores from  Gearóid Savage and Tommy Walsh ( both from open play) had us five points in the ascendancy before Mitchels had a point from the lively Alan O’Donoghue.

Asserting our superiority in midfield through Con, allied to the great support play from defence via Ryan ” Chucky” Carroll and Ross O’Callaghan we found space and time to attack the Mitchels rear-guard and tacked on some fine points in the process through Tommy (3) , Tom Hoare and a superb “45” from Chucky to lead by 1-10 to 0-05 at the break – indeed it was hard to imagine that we had not added to our goal tally when first Gavin O’Brien sliced through only to be denied by the keeper and then when Tommy got his hands on a ball only to see it fly over the bar when a goal looked likely.

The second half saw us continue to take the game to the Boherbue side but again a combination of poor finishing and some fine goalkeeping saw us fail to add another green flag; we did have scores from Tom Hoare, effective throughout, Gazza, Gavin O’Brien , Tommy (2) and Chucky – at the other end, we were equal to anything that Mitchels could throw at us with Ross O’Callaghan doing a great policing job on danger man Alan O’Donoghue ably aided by Danny O’Sullivan, Shane Brosnan and Cormac Coffey.

Final score: Kerins O’Rahillys 1-16, John Mitchels 0-09.

This was a fine team  performance but special mention to Chucky, Con and Tommy who were immense all through. We now take a two week break before the next game which sees us travel to Lewis Road on the weekend of the 9th June to take on Dr Crokes.

Team: Gary Kissane, Danny O’Sullivan, Ross O’Callaghan, Shane Brosnan, Cian Sayers, Cormac Coffey, Ryan Carroll ( 0-2), Con Barrett (1-0), John C O’Connor, Gavin O’Brien ( 0-1), Tommy Walsh ( 0-8, 5 fs), Karl Mullins, Gearóid Savage ( 0-3, 2fs), Tom Hoare ( 0-02), John Ferguson.

Subs used : Darragh McElligott, Shane McElligott, Padraig Griffin, David Murphy, Jason O’Leary & Seán Collins.

Division 5:
Kerins O’Rahillys 6-13
Kilgarvan              0-12

A strong start to the game which saw us in the lead by 3 points to nil after 10 mins with the scores  coming from Shane McElligott (2) and Rory Molloy before Kilgarvan opened their account from their full forward; we continued to apply the pressure with midfielder Darragh McElligott to the fore and shortly afterwards as we approached the 13th minute full forward Tom Hoare found the net; it was to get better for the home side within 5 minutes when Padraig Griffin found space and he too was on hand to raise another green flag – from here to the half time whistle we traded scores to leave us in the ascendancy at the short whistle, 2-06 to 0-07.

On the restart , we were again on the front foot with good points coming from Shane McElligott and substitute Ryan Carroll and the game was over as a contest when in the 12th minute Darragh McElligott burst through from midfield to rattle the net – from here to the finish we added further goals through Tom Hoare, Padraig Griffin and a late  penalty converted by Chucky.

This was a good all round performance with Tom McGrath and Jason O’Leary outstanding in defence, Darragh McElligott well on top in midfield and solid forward displays from Padraig Griffin, Tom Hoare and Shane McElligott.

Team: Killilan Moran, Gary Nolan, Thomas McGrath, Kieran Mangan, Rory O’Connor, Jason O’Leary, Seán Collins, Darragh McElligott ( 1-01), , Rory Molloy ( 0-03), Seán Griffin, Padraig Griffin ( 2-01), Gearóid Hartnett, Shane McElligott ( 0-04), Tom Hoare ( 2-03), James O’Connor.

Subs used: Ryan Carroll ( 1-01), Joe Hanafin, both in the second half.

U-17:
The special U-17 competition commenced last Weds night with 24 teams participating throughout the county. The emphasis is on giving games to this age group while also focusing on the skills of the game. Games are 9 a side, 12 minutes per half, played on a round robin basis with 2 teams from each group going forward to Round 2.

We had our first game vs Gneeveguilla who were much stronger physically and put us under pressure from the first whistle – though we tried manfully, we were not strong enough and Gneeeguilla ran out comfortable winners. Our next game was against Finuge where we played much better as a team winning easily in the end. The results placed us second in our group and into round 2.

The focus now switches to JP O’Sullivan Park this Monday night for the second round of fixtures in this competition; we are in a group with the hosts ( Laune Rangers) and Firies – the action gets underway @ 18.30

Academy:

It was a lovely warm morning in Ballyrickard on Sunday morning with a big turnout of players and parents alike. The children trained hard along with their coaches with plenty of running followed by a match. Thank you as always to all the coaches for their time and commitment to the club – it is much appreciated.
Thanks also to the parents who generously brought some goodies this morning.

The skill of the week for the U10 Boy’s is the “Pick Up”, enjoy practising the skill during the week.

The skill for the U 8/10 GIrls & the U 6 boys & girls is the “Body Catch” –  enjoy practising during the week.

We’ll no doubt look forward to seeing the skills improve in next week’s session.

A Huge Congratulations to our Players of the Week:

U 6 Boys Max Fitzgibbon

Julian Zytka

U6 Girl     Sarah McGrath

U 8 Girl     Lexi Keane

U8 Boys   Jack Behan

Ryan Molloy

U 10 Girl    Alivia Larkin

U10 Boy    Ryan Onyekwere

Have a great week everyone and see you all next Sunday the 3rd June 2018 at 11am in Ballyrickard.

U-12s:

We travelled to Gallarus to play an Ghaeltacht both U12 A & B teams on Sunday evening.

It was a lovely warm sunny evening in the West, perfect for football.

Team A, played well yet were defeated by a stronger an Ghaeltacht team on a score line of KoR  1-15

to An Ghaeltacht  5-24

Team B played well also –   it has been said each week this team keeps improving with every game.

They play well together and were comfortably ahead for the whole match, winning eventually by 9 points.

Final score KoR 5-17 to An Gaeltacht 5-8.

The U 12’s have no match next week.

Training as usual Tuesday and Thursday, 6.30 to 7.30pm in Healy Park.

Go Games were held in Connolly Park last Wednesday evening with again a big turnout – everybody enjoyed themselves on a great evening’s football. There are no Go Games this coming week.

U-14s:

Our U-14s were beaten by Fossa in Ballymac on Weds night last in the county league division 2 final. This was a game that  was nip and tuck all the way with only a point separating the teams at the half time whistle, 1-05 to 1-04. We were down five points twice in the second half but great heart,  commitment and no little skill saw us level the scores in the final minutes to take the game to extra time. The additional 20 minutes was a bridge too far as we ran out of steam succumbing to a physically stronger side at the finish. Commiserations to the boys and congrats to Fossa who were deserving winners.

U-15s:

The Munster  Super 10s Fé 15 competition  took place last Sat morning  when we welcomed St Senans, Shannon Gaels and Boherbue/Kiskeam to Healy Park.

This is an initiative by the Munster council to ensure the  participation of players who otherwise might not be playing @ U-16 level and to have players playing against opposition from outside the county.

The games were played on a round robin basis and when we came to play our Cork opponents it was a top of the table clash with the winners advancing to the finals on Sat 15th June next in Mallow – when the game was over, it was us who will make the trip coming out on top on a final score line of 3-07 to 2-08.

Well done to the lads who participated and to Ray & Barry who took charge of the team.

Squad: Sam Pituch, Jerome Daly, Eric McMahon, TJ Heaphy, Alan O’Connor, Ben O’Brien, Sam McCarthy, Enis Reka, Jack Savage, Seán Healy, Darragh O’Connor.

Ladies:

U12 GIRLS
Our U12 girls winning streak of 5 wins in a row came to an end last Tuesday evening in Castleisland when we lost on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-8.
We started the game with leg injuries by Kelly Fitzgerald and Aoibhin MacCarthy.
We battled well in the first half with pts from Sophie Hassett, Kelly Fitzgerald and great goals from Amy Behan and Aoibhin MacCarthy to lead by 2 pts at halftime on a scoreline of 2-4 to 1-5.
We tired in the second half as some of our players had school games earlier in the day.
However we scored 4 pts in this half with 1 pt from Lauren Doody and 3 pointed frees from Sophie Hassett .
We were in contention of victory when with 5 mins to go we were only 1pt down . Then Sophie Hassett hit a great shot low and to the right which hit the post and went wide. This was a game changer as Castleisland went down soon after and scored a goal followed by a pt. which was the final score. On the night we were beaten by a fresher and hungrier team.
We play a Strong Abbeydorney team on Tuesday next at 7p.m. in our pitch at Ballyrickard. All support is welcome!
Team v Castleisland
Millie O’ Brien, Ava Ward, Rachel Foley, Millie Hayes, Fiadh McCarthy , Aoibhin MacCarthy, Saoirse MacCarthy, Ella O’ Connor, Lauren Doody, Aoibheann McCarthy, Sophie Hassett, Nathali Mulumba, Aoife Behan, Kelly Fitzgerald, Amy Behan .
Subs: Ciara Gallagher, Farah Leahy, Taylor Stack, Donna O’ Reagan, Emma Greensmith.
Best wishes to Amy Behan from your team mates, mentors and the ladies club. Hope you’re back again shortly after your unfortunate injury during training.
U14 GIRLS

U16 GIRLS
Last Tuesday we headed out to Ballyduff to play Beale / Ballyduff in The Co. League. The pitch was quiet and we were warming up with our jerseys hanging in the dressing room but to find out that the fixture had been changed to Beale. Apologies to parents as we weren’t notified of the change.  Final score 3-4 to 2-7. Well  done to the girls, Martin, Tricia and Kevin.

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

Seniors: Heartbreak in Fitzgerald Stadium as we failed to come to terms with a defensive structure which eventually saw South Kerry advance on a final score line of 0-12 to 1-08.

South Kerry set up to nullify and negate our scoring threat with wing forwards Conor O’Shea and Graham O’Sullivan operating in their defence thus clogging up all available space – the structure worked the oracle as we failed to penetrate their rearguard often enough to build a winning score.

We played into the strong breeze in the first half and after two wides, Bryan Sheehan fisted a point on the 6th minute to open the scoring; this was followed by our best move of the game when John Ferguson found Karl Mullins with a lovely pass and his quick delivery was fielded by Tommy on the edge of square who fed the inrushing Padraig Griffin who was fouled.

Referee Edmund Walsh pointed to the penalty spot and Jack Savage duly found the corner of the net – this score kept us in front for the remainder of the half with further points from Barry John from a free and John Ferguson with a fine effort from play.

Our defence was coping with the best SK could offer with our full back line of Danny O’Sullivan, Ross O’Callaghan and Tommy Begley outstanding.

We maintained our advantage until the 23rd minute when in a purple patch SK levelled matters with scores from Bryan Sheehan ( 2) and Ronan Hussey from a free. Just on the stroke of half time, Tommy clearly hampered by an injury, pointed following a pass from Gearoid Savage to leave us in the ascendancy at half time, 1-03 to 0-05. Whilst we were happy with this scoreline the loss of John Ferguson and Gavin O’Brien to injury was a major worry.

The resumption offered real hope when Jack Savage pointed from a free and when Tommy Begley added another with his right foot we were 3 ahead, 1-06 to 0-06. South Kerry reacted now by withdrawing Matthew O’Sullivan and Ronan Hussey with Niall O’Shea and Ian Galvin entering the fray.

However SK, though enjoying plenty of possession failed to capitalise on the score board shooting a number of wides with result that the sides were still level with 23 minutes elapsed.

SK forged ahead on the 25th minute only for Jack Savage to equalise with a fine effort and it was all square with 2 minutes of normal time remaining.

A pointed free from Daniel Daly allied to a fisted effort from Mark Griffin pushed the divisional side ahead but a massive effort from Barry John from a free had the lead cut to the minimum with 90 seconds on the clock.

Another foul in the middle of the pitch offered us a chance to save the game but Barry John’s effort fell short and when SK cleared their lines, referee called a halt to proceedings to leave us trailing by one point and out of the championship.

This loss is a huge disappointment following our recent good run but great credit is due to the team and management who only just failed to reach our first final since 2008.

On the day, our lack of strength in depth when losing John Ferguson, Gavin O’Brien and Tommy Walsh was just too much to handle and we now face off against Kilcummin in two weeks time to save our senior status for 2018. Its quite bizarre that after reaching the last four of the premier competition in the county that we now have to play a game to retain our status for next year.

Surely the review committee now in place will look at this anomaly for next year and ensure that a more equitable system is put in place for club sides who annually have the spectre of relegation looming over them which is incompatible with rules for divisional sides.

Senior Championship Relegation Play Off Kerins O’Rahillys 1-12 Laune Rangers 0-09

Though always in control of this game we had some anxious moments before the final whistle was sounded to guarantee Senior status for 2016.

A competition that is seriously flawed and to the detriment of all clubs, leaves a bad taste to all concerned and hopefully this situation can be reversed next year.

Kerins Laune 17

We had the first score of the game a well taken point from Barry John Keane. Jack Savage followed with a pointed free to leave the scores at Kerins O’Rahillys 0-02 to Laune Rangers 0-02 at the 6th minute.

Exchanges were robust enough at this stage as could be understood with so much at stake. Though we had Tommy Walsh at full forward Laune Rangers had two men on him and an extra mid field back in defence.

We added further points from Jack Savage, Barry John, and a great run through the middle by centre back Ross O’Callaghan who put over the bar to leave the scores at Kerins O’Rahillys 0-05 to Laune Rangers 0-02 at the 14th minute.

With Con Barrett gaining a lot of possession in midfield and ably assisted by Gavin Duffy, Cian Sayers and David Moran, we had further points from David Mc Loughlin who covered acres of ground throughout the game and worked tirelessly and a final point from Jack Savage to leave the half time score at Kerins O’Rahillys 0-07 to Laune Rangers 0-04.

We had the first point in the second half from an acute angle from Jack Savage who had an outstanding game throughout, and straight after a ball won by Kieran O’Mahony who drew players and flighted the ball across the goal for Jack Savage to slot in to the corner of the net leaving us ahead by 1-08 to Laune Rangers 0-04.

This was the score that decided the game. Though Rangers hit back with a series of points and dominated play for the next 10 minutes. We weathered the storm with Shane Brosnan, Danny O’Sullivan, David Murphy, and Cian Sayers outstanding in the backs aided by David Moran and Giles O’Grady showing all his experience.

Points by Jack Savage 2 more from Barry John Keane and the final point from Declan Quill left us deserved winners at the final whistle. Gary Kissane brought off a brilliant save in the 40th minute when a goal seemed inevitable.

Our next Co League game versus Dingle has been provisionally fixed for Sunday the 15th of November at 2pm in Strand Road.

Note – All fixtures are subject to change. Changes will be posted on Facebook and Twitter.

They say goals win matches and this was certainly the case on Saturday evening last when we bowed out of the championship with a James O’Donoghue inspired Legion march on to the semi final.

James O’Donoghue caused havoc in the Kerins O’Rahillys defence and with his goals it gave them the platform to see out the game. We responded well after these goals and only a point separated the teams at the 17th minute but the third goal gave them another fillip before half time and they always threatened in the attack.

Jack Savage had our first point in the second minute. Just before this with 30 seconds gone Gary Kissane brought off a brilliant save to deny O’Donoghue a certain goal. But they hit the net in the 4th minute to put them ahead.

We responded well with another point from Jack Savage who had an excellent game throughout and when Barry John Keane was brought down in the square it was expertly put away by David Moran to put us ahead by 1-02 to Legions 1-01.

Then disaster in the 10th minute with Legions 2nd goal. We replied with points by Barry John Keane, Tommy Walsh, and Jack Savage to leave the score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-05 to Legions 2-03 at the 17th minute then another goal by Legion to put them ahead.

We fought back with points from David McLoughlin, and 2 Jack Savage points to leave the half time score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-08 to Legions 3-04. We were only a point adrift in the first quarter of the second half with David Moran and Tommy Walsh dominating the middle and good support play from Con Barrett, Danny O’Sullivan, and Kieran O’Mahony.

Points by Jack Savage from frees and a Kieran O’Mahony point from play left the score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-11 to Legions 3-07 at the 45th minute and it was anyone’s game, but pressure from Legion resulted in a penalty and O’Donoghue to put away for Legions fourth goal.

Though we battled hard for an equaliser and we had points from Tommy Walsh, John O’Connor and Jack Savage Legion held on for a deserved win.

Next game is Tralee Town Board Championship final. This will be played in Ballymac on Sunday the 18th of October at 3.30 and is against Austin Stacks.

Note – All fixtures are subject to change. Changes will be posted on Facebook and Twitter.

Kerins O’Rahillys  3-14

Waterville 0-05

We hosted Waterville in Strand Rd on Sunday last in a Div 1 back game and our final game before we play Milltown /Castlemaine in the championship on Sunday 27th.

From the throw in, we took the game to Waterville and though our early attacks were repulsed, the portents were good and we duly got our first score in the 6th minute from outstanding midfielder Con Barrett.

From there to the 15th minute we added a further 5 points courtesy of Greg O’Connell (2), John Ferguson , Kieran O’Mahony & John O’Connor.

Waterville registered their first score on 10 mins but were  not to score again in the first half; continued good work in defence from Danny O’Sullivan, Shane Brosnan & Cian Sayers kept us on the front foot and we had increased our lead to 10 points to 0-1 approaching the short whistle.

As half time loomed a high ball into the square was fumbled and Greg O’Connell displayed his tenacity when fisting the ball home.

On the resumption the elements were with the visitors but we drew first blood when following a great bout of inter passing John O’Connor found the bottom corner of the net with a left footed drive; from here to the end we controlled the game , adding another goal from the impressive Greg O’Connell and using all of our six substitutes.

Overall, a very good victory and one which showed the well being of the squad before our championship game on 27th Sept- final score 3-14 to 0-5.

U21 Acorn Life U21 Championship Final

Kerins O’Rahillys 2-15

East Kerry 2-09.

We captured the Under 21 Co. Championship title for the first time last Tuesday evening at the Castleisland Desmonds grounds with a deserved win over East Kerry played in ideal conditions.

It was a performance well worthy of champions and right from the throw in Strand Road dominated the game and were well up for it such was the commitment and drive of all the players on the night.

It was overall a team performance with some outstanding individual displays on the night. We were ahead by 7 points after 17 minutes and could have had a goal as well such was our dominance.

The first point was put over by Ronan Quill who was outstanding throughout the hour. Points by Jack Savage who was unerring in his free taking and Gearoid Savage, Cormac Coffey and Ronan Quill who put over the seventh point. Brian Scannell had the 8th point and East Kerry’s first score came in the 20th minute.

When Cian Sayers who was making tremendous runs at mid field set up Man Of The Match Cormac Coffey who found an opening and drilled the ball to the top of the net making it Kerins O’Rahillys 1-08 to East Kerry 0-03 at the 29th minute.

A Jack Savage pointed free left the half time score at Kerins O Rahillys 1-09 to East Kerry’s 0-03. The second half saw East Kerry thunder into the game with a high ball that finished in the back of the net.

Two further points had the scoreline at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-09 to East Kerry’s 1-05 at the 35th minute. Jack Savage and Cormac Coffey replied with two points, but East Kerry struck for a second goal and a point and now there was only two points between the sides at the 40th minute.

This was as close as they got as the team never wavered and when Ronan Quill cut in from the side and floated the ball across the goals the impressive Diarmuid O’Sullivan was on hand to palm the ball to the net. Though East Kerry tried to come back our backs held firm and points by Jack Savage one from the touchline and Ronan Quill sealed the issue.

The Acorn Life Under 21 Co Championship Cup was presented to winning captain Martin Tierney and Man Of The Match trophy was presented to Cormac Coffey by Chairman of the Co Board Pádraig Ó Súilleabháin. A great evening of football and well done to all our supporters’ young and old who came out to support the team it was much appreciated.

U13 Girls Co Championship Semi-Final Kerins O’Rahillys 4-03 Glenflesk 1-09

Our U13 girls made the journey to Glenflesk last Tuesday evening to take on the home side in the semi final of their championship. This was a physical and very exciting match right to the end.

We were 2pts down after 10mins and from there to the end of the half we took control of the game hitting 3-03. We went in at half time leading 3-03 to 0-05pts.

We knew that Glenflesk would come back at us in the second half and they slowly started putting points on the board. With 10mins to go we were only leading by 3pts when we hit Glenflesk for another goal but back came Glenflesk and a goal by them made it a 3pt game again.

From here to the final whistle it was backs to the wall where everyone dug deep and we held out to win on a scoreline of 4-03 to 1-09. This was an excellent team performance where every girl can feel proud of the effort they put in.

We now meet Scartaglen in the final with a date and venue to be confirmed. Panel: C.Pierce, K O’Dwyer, L Scannell, A O’Sullivan, S Griffin, S Donegan, E Houston, N Moran, C Donnelly, C Murphy, D O’Regan, F Quirke, S Wadding, O Nix, A Doody, A O’Connor, S Healy, H Moriarty, L Dowling, A Gannon, F Efegbare.

Credit Union Senior League Round 8 Kerins O Rahillys 2-14 Kilcummin 0-07

A comprehensive display by Kerins O’Rahillys gave us a deserved win over Kilcummin played at the Kilcummin pitch last Sunday afternoon. We dominated from the throw in with Con Barrett and Gavin Duffy dominant at mid field and Cormac Coffey outstanding at wing back.

Opening points by Kieran O’Mahony, Cormac Coffey and Jack Savage had us ahead by 0-03 to Kilcummin’s 0-02 at the 16th minute. Then a great move by Con Barrett when he raced through the centre and set up Sean Walsh who put a piledriver to the corner of the net. Further points by Jack Savage, Kieran O’Mahony, Greg O’Connell, and Kevin Walshe left us ahead at half time by Kerins O’Rahillys 1-08 to Kilcummin’s 0-02.

A great save by Gary Kissane just before half time when he dived to save a certain goal put out for a 45. The second half saw Kerins O’Rahillys again dominate and though Kilcummin had the first few points of this half we replied with points from Gavin Duffy, David Mc Loughlin, Kieran O Mahony, and a John O’Connor point to leave us ahead by 1-12 to Kilcummin’s 0-06 at the 47th minute.

A high ball floated in straight after was punched to the net by impressive full forward Sean Walsh which finished the game as a contest. We introduced Mark O’Sullivan, Declan Quill, Tommy Begley, Martin Tierney, and Ronan Quill.

Two final points from Declan Quill and Danny O’Sullivan sealed the issue. Gary Kissane made some great saves especially in the last few minutes when Kilcummin laid siege to the goals. Others to impress were Shane Brosnan, full back, Cian Sayers, Kevin Walshe, John O’Connor and Greg O’Connell.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s GAA Club News

Strand RoadSenior Football

Credit Union Senior Co League Division 1 Kerins O’Rahillys 1-10 Dr Crokes 0-14

We were very unlucky not to come away with a draw in this evenly contested Div. 1 game played at Lewis Road in ideal conditions on Saturday evening last.

There was nothing between the sides throughout the game with both sides having plenty of possession and dominating at different stages of the game. Dr Crokes had the opening score a point in the 3rd minute.

We replied with a well taken point by David Mc Loughlin to level the scores. Though Dr Crokes added two more points we replied with points from John O’Connor and a Jack Savage free to leave the scores at 3 points each at the 15th minute.

We went ahead straight after with a well taken point by Jack Savage but Dr Crokes replied with 3 more points to leave the half time scores at Kerins O’Rahillys 0-05 to Dr Crokes 0-06 our 5th point put over by Jack Savage from a free.

Though Dr Crokes added 2 more points after half time a great run from Cian Sayers found John O’Connor with a cross field ball and following a great pass the unmarked Kieran O’ Mahony billowed the net to level the scores at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-05 to Dr Crokes 0-08 at the 37th minute.

Three great points by Kieran O’ Mahony who was very impressive in the forwards left us ahead by 1-08 to Dr Crokes 0-09 at the 41st minute. Dr Crokes drew level in the 44th minute and both sides traded points with Jack Savage putting over two frees for Strand Road to leave the scores at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-10 to Dr Crokes 0-14 at the 56th minute.

There was a delay in play after this with yellow cards flashed to both sides but time ran out and Crokes scrope home with a one point win and a valuable two league points.

Garry Kissane was solid in goals. Danny Sullivan, Shane Brosnan, Cian Sayers and Giles O’ Grady did well in the backs. Gavin Duffy and Kevin Walshe had a good hour mid field and up front his Man of the Match John O’Connor who was outstanding.

Junior Leagues

Junior League Group 1 Strand Road 0-16 Legion 1-06

Strand RoadKerins O’Rahillys Notes

Senior Football

Credit Union Co League Rnd 4 Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-12 Kerins O’Rahillys 2-9

A Man of the Match display by full forward Gavin O’Grady gave Glenbeigh/Glencar a deserved victory in this keenly contested Div 1 game played at Strand Road in very wet conditions.

Glenbeigh\Glencar opened the scoring with two well taken points by Jeremiah Hoare and Podge Griffin. Kerins O’Rahillys replied with points to level the scoring from Jack Savage and a Declan Quill free.

Gavin O’Grady had Glenbeigh /Glencars 3rd point in the 6th minute before Kerins O’Rahillys hit a purple patch with points by Jack Savage four on the trot followed by a great goal by mid fielder Con Barrett to leave them ahead by 1-07 to Glenbeigh\ Glencars 0-03 at the 16th minute.

But Glenbeigh/Glencar thundered into the game and with Colin McGillicuddy outstanding at mid field and ably assisted by Jeremiah Hoare, Fergal Griffin and Bernard Murphy they had 3 rapid points from O’Grady and a penalty expertly put away by O’Grady to leave 2 points between the sides at the 28th minute Kerins O’Rahillys 1-07 to Glenbeigh/Glencars 1-05 Grady added another point to leave the half time score at G\G 1-06 K.O.Rahillys 1-07.

The second half saw G\G open the scoring with two points by the impressive O’Grady to put them ahead by 1-08 to  Kerins O’Rahillys 1-07.

Jack Savage levelled the scores straight after and a great run by Strand Roads Kieran O’Mahoney when he billowed the net from close range put them back in front by 2-08 to 1-08 at the 45th minute.

John O’Connor made it 2-09 to Glenbeigh/Glencars 1-08 straight after but it was the visitors who pushed on with Jack Brosnan, Kieran Doyle, Vincent Hoare and centre fielder Colin McGillicuddy dominant.

It was O’Grady who turned the tide with 4 great points to draw them level at the 51st minute and with time up he was on hand to collect a breaking ball and cooly slotted to the net for a big win for the Mid Kerry men.

A minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect for Kerins O’Rahillys past Chairman Dr. Arthur Spring and player Pat Reynolds who passed away recently.

U14 Boys U14 Boys play Dingle on Wednesday the 6th in the Co League Semi-final.

We played Dingle in the semi final of the county league in Caherina last Wednesday night. A good crowd turned out to see what was a very entertaining match .We played with the breeze in the first half but Dingle got off to the better start with three well taken points, we replied with a Darragh Fitzgerald goal.

Dingle added on six more points before the break but we replied with two well taken goals by Conor Hayes and Conor o Sullivan plus a point by Ben Foley which left us ahead by a point at half time. The second half was a tight affair and scores were hard to come by as both defences were well on top but scores did come as Dingle tagged on five points to our four to leave the sides level at full time 3-05 to 0-14.

Extra time followed but unfortunately we ran out of steam and Dingle went on to win the game on a final score of 1-22 to 3-06. Despite the result last night we can feel very proud of our campaign in the county league.

We had three players on the panel who were playing Gaelic football for the first time so they will only improve going forward plus a lot of our players are under again next year. With more coaching and hard work from the players they can look forward to a great future in the blue and white jersey.

U16 Boys U16 Boys played Castleisland in the Semi-final of the Central Region on Monday the 4th in Castleisland at 7pm. Kerins O’Rahillys came out winners in what was a very closely fought contest. The final score was Kerins O’Rahillys 2-13 Castleisland 3-09.

We played two games over the last week in the County League. Our first game was last Wednesday night in Ballyrickard where we were to strong against Laune Ranger’s B. The game was really decided by half time where we led 4-08 to 0-01.The second half of the game was closer, but we ran out winners on a scoreline of Kerins O’Rahillys 5-10 to Laune Rangers B1-3.

Our second game last Sunday was a much tougher game away to Beaufort, this game was played in conditions more suited to the month of December with a strong wind and a pitch that was waterlogged in parts of it.

We played against the wind in first half and after a wonderful effort we were only 4pts down at half time. The efforts of the first half seemed to take the energy out of us for the second half as we struggled against an older and physical Beaufort team. Final Score Beaufort 1.10 Kerins O’Rahillys 1-02. Once again a big thanks to all the parents who supported the girls in their two games.

Panel :C.Pierce, A O’Sullivan, L Scannell, S Healy, S Griffin, S Donegan, C Donnelly, C Crowe, N Moran, C Murphy, D O’Regan, F Quirke, A Doody, O Nix, L Linnane, S Wadding, E Houston, L Williams, A O’Connor.

Our U14 girls took part in the Feile qualifiers last Saturday in Ballymac. This was played of over a series of short games. In our first game we played Currow and this was really a game of two halves as at half time we trailed 1.5 to 0.0.

We stormed into the game in the 2nd half playing excellent football. We had a lot of chances to get something out of it but due to wides and lady luck deserting us we came up short. Currow 1.6 KOR 1.3.

In our 2nd game we played the Spa, once again we had chances to be further ahead at half time but couldn’t convert them. H/T KOR 1pt Spa 0pt, into the 2nd half and Spa added 5pts to win 5pts to 1pt.

Our next game against Ballymac was an excellent team performance from start to finish, we led 3pts to 2pts at H/T and ran out winners 5pts to 3pts. In our last game we received a walkover from Kilcummin.

Overall this a great experience for the girls which will no doubt stand to them for the future and out of the 18 girls that played 17 are underage next year again. A big thank you to all the parents who helped and supported the team throughout the day. Senior Football League Division 1 Round 3

Kerins O’Rahillys 1-07

Killarney Legion 1-07

We travelled to Dirreen on Saturday night last 11th April to play the locals in Round 3 of the Division 1 County League.  This was a dress rehearsal for the upcoming Club Championship game which will take place in Strand Road on Saturday night next 18th April.

We were at full strength for this fixture following the return of our 3 county players. Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half, we took the game to Legion and led 1-1 to 2 points after 12 minutes the goal coming from a David Moran penalty following a foul on Barry John Keane.

Legion worked their way back into the game mainly through the free taking of their number 14, David O’Sullivan but we were still well placed heading into the interval holding a 1 point lead 1-3 to 5 points.

However, a high ball into our square resulted in the ball ending up in the back of the net leaving us 2 points in arrears at the half time whistle.

This did not seem an insurmountable gap given the strength of the wind which would favour us in the second half.

On the resumption we poured forward in search of scores but a combination of wayward shooting (we shot a total of 10 wides) and a massed defence by the opposition saw us trail by 1 point 1-7 to 1-6 with time running out.

A free from 45 yards following a foul on David Moran brought a welcome equaliser from Jack Savage and a few minutes later the referee blew the full time whistle to give us a share of the points.

We will go toe to toe with Legion again on Saturday night next 18th at 6.30 in the First Round of the Senior Club Championship having home advantage in Strand Road.

Masters Challenge

There was as always great interest in the Club’s Master’s Challenge last weekend. It brought many golfing pundits out of the shadows and everyone thought they knew who was going to win.

Well the following were the ones with the winners.

Lee Strand Tralee Town Board Final Kerins O’Rahillys 1-06 Austin Stacks 0-12

We contested the Tralee Town League final on Saturday last in Austin Stack Park against our neighbours Austin Stacks on a perfect evening for football.

We opened brightly and registered the first score of the match with a point from Jack Savage from play after 3 minutes. Austin Stacks equalised immediately but again we edged in front thanks to Kieran O’Mahony point on 7 minutes with David Mannix equalising once again for Austin Stacks from a free kick.

With Con Barrett and Kevin Walshe driving forward from mid field we tacked on 2 more points to lead on a scoreline of 4 points to 2 after 15 minutes.  From there to the half time whistle there were just a further 3 points which left us in the ascendancy at half time 5 points to 4.

On the resumption we faced into the freshening breeze but were immediately boosted by a tremendous goal from Cormac Coffey who was up supporting the forwards when he found the top corner of the net with a terrific drive.

Austin Stacks worked their way back into the game and there was the minimum between the sides, 1-5 to 0-7 when the referee’s attention was drawn to an incident by the umpires, which resulted in a red card for our outstanding corner back Danny O’Sullivan.

From here to the finish the numerical disadvantage proved too much of a mountain to climb, with the game ending on a final scoreline of Austin Stacks 0-12 to Kerins O’Rahilly’s 1-6. Our attention now switches to Round 3 of the County League Division 1 when we travel to Legion on Saturday night next 11th April to play the locals with the game throwing in at 6.30pm.

U14 Boys Kerins O’Rahillys 6-09 Spa Killarney 3-13

We travelled to Killarney to play Spa in the first round of the County League last Wednesday evening. Weather conditions were okay even though underfoot conditions were quite poor. We won the toss and decided to play with the aid of the wind.

We built up a good lead and led at halftime by 6 points. We started the second half strongly but Spa got more into the game and reduced the deficit to 1 point. We again dug deep and scored 2 goals and 3 points without reply.

Spa finished much stronger and at the final whistle we led by 5 points. Final score: Kerins O’Rahillys 6-09 Spa Killarney 3-13. It was a great start to our County League campaign. Team: J.Hanafin S.Nix B.Foley D.Corr R.Mclysaght D.O`Sullivan S.Murphy B.Foley G.Dunne G.Burrows D.Fitzgerald C.O`Sullivan KO`Brien C.Hayes G.O`Carroll SUBS: B.Shortt D.Bowler M.Kerins. Strand RoadJuveniles

U6, U8, U10s Outdoor training for all of these age groups both boys and girls started back on Saturday last the 7th of March.

There were good numbers at training and all were treated to expert coaching not only from all of our fully qualified coaches but from our three senior Kerry players and our two U21 Kerry players too.

We are extremely lucky to have this wealth of knowledge to draw from and our young players soaked it up on Saturday morning. Thanks to Barry John Keane, David Moran, Tommy Walsh, Cormac Coffey and Jack Savage for giving so freely of their time.

They will no doubt be dropping in to check on all of our young players in the season ahead.  All of our Saturday coaches are fully qualified and the Saturday coaching sessions promise fun with all of the skills thrown in.

Senior Football

Tralee District Senior League: Kerins O’Rahillys 2-10 Ballymacelligott 1-04

We took on Ballymacelligott in the third round of the Tralee Town League on Sunday last in Healy Park Ballyrickard throwing in at 2pm.  Ballymacelligott, with the aid of a stiff breeze, were first into the attack and we found ourselves a goal and a point down after just 5 minutes.

A pointed free from Declan Quill was our first score but Ballymacelligott soon restored their lead with another white flag after 15 minutes.

We gradually worked our way into the game due to some fine work in the middle of the park by Con Barrett with strong running from David McLoughlin and also Greg O’Connell which left the half time score at 1-3 to 0-5 in favour of the visitors.

On the resumption our first attack yielded a fine goal from John Ferguson who picked his spot and shot low into the corner.  From there we controlled the game with fine displays from Con Barrett, Martin Tierney, David McLoughlin and Declan Quill.  From there to the final whistle we added another 1-7 with Declan accounting for 1-2, further minor from John Ferguson and an outstanding score from the left wing by Tommy Begley who had come up from wing back in support of the attack.

This was a most satisfactory win with all players contributing but a special mention must be made of Con Barrett for his high fielding and all round work rate throughout the pitch. We will now play Austin Stacks in the final of this competition on Easter weekend.  Our next game will come on 22nd March when we travel to play Finuge in Round 1 of the County League Division 1.

Senior Football

Senior Co League Round 11 Kerins O’Rahillys 3-09 Austin Stacks 1-15

A draw was a fair result in this final Co. League game played at Connolly Park last Sunday afternoon in wet conditions.

Great credit to both sides for serving up a good hours football where the result was in the balance until the final whistle.

Though Stacks were ahead by 2 points after 3 minutes a well worked move by Strand Road saw a ball put through to Kieran O’Mahony who billowed the net from close range.

Points by Barry John Keane who was causing big problems at full forward and Jack Savage had the scores level at the 12th minute 1-02 to Austin Stacks 0-05. Both sides traded points with Kieran O’Mahony, and Barry John Keane putting over the bar. Then our second goal when Barry John Keane gathered possession near the goals and from an acute angle billowed the net.

Further points by Barry John and the impressive Cormac Coffey left the score at half time Kerins O’Rahillys 2-07 to A. Stacks 0-10.

The second half saw A. Stacks reply with a few points but great work by Kevin Walshe and Sean Walsh at midfield and strong play from Tommy Begley, Andrew Thompson, David Murphy and Mitchell Donnelly in the backs setting up the attacks.

A great run by Cormac Coffey who finished with a great goal had us ahead by 3-07 to A.Stacks 0-14 at the 50th minute.

Austin Stacks were closing in but A well taken point Cormac Coffey put us up again. We were ahead going into the final minutes but a goal put them a point up and a free from Barry John in the dying minutes levelled it.

Other players to impress were Robert O Connor in goals whose kick outs always found a team mate, John Ferguson, Greg O Connell, Ronan Quill,Jack Nolan , and the hardworking Cian Sayers played well.

U14/U16: Town League. On a perfect evening for football our U16 Ladies took on Na Gaeil in the town league. The game started slow enough with both teams trying to find their feet. They were fairly evenly matched throughout the 1st half with the score tied at half-time 1-2 to 1-2.

The 2nd half burst into life with rapid scores from both sides. It was a fantastic game full of action with nothing separating the 2 teams.

In the final minutes of the game we were ahead by 2 points but a last charge by Na Gaeil produced a goal which put them ahead by 1. The girls gave it all they had but the final whistle blew and that was that. Final score Na Gaeil 2-9 Kerins O’Rahillys 3-5.
