WE are granted a lot of things in this day and age. One of the most powerful being free speech.
I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I can’t see it any other way. It would be like saying that we aren’t allowed to form our own thoughts. I just see it as a total ridiculous notion and I can’t even begin to process it.
However, I think that there is that point where no matter how valid you may believe your opinion to be, you may not need to vocalise it.
I think that this is hard to word, as I never ever want to keep anyone from their beliefs or their views, but I think that there does come a point when you need to put a sock in it. For lack of better terminology.
When we are young, we tend to be very free with our opinions. I know that I was one to stand by whatever outburst I had conjured up without hesitation. Fortunately, or unfortunately I have lost this trait.
Now I am much less likely to stand by an unprepared statement, or any answer that was blurted out in the heat of the moment.
Everything I say now is much more calculated. And despite what I may say in the daze of an early Monday morning, I tend to keep everything in check.
I think we are all victims to something known as being “politically correct” or PC. This is what causes me to second guess everything I say for fear of hurting someones feelings, or possibly being misquoted in the future.
Despite just saying that there comes a point when you should ‘put a sock’ in it and just bite your tongue. The whole point of free speech is not to have to do so. I think that we have in fact become overly PC, and it has climbed to such ridiculous levels that you almost feel like you can’t say anything anymore.
As a teenager, I have a lot of opinions (as there is no such thing as too many) and despite the occasional roaring debate over equality in various classrooms, I tend to be quite good and zipping it after a while.
I do not want to do this to be PC but instead to just keep my opinion to myself because I don’t want to be over-imposing on other peoples beliefs. If we are all entitled to them, we are all entitled to them, and that’s that.
Once again I am getting myself tongue twisted in the hope that I can somehow please everyone, which of course is totally impossible. But, in my opinion, I think that there is no need to force your opinion down someone else’s throat just because that is your belief. It is YOUR opinion. Not everyone else’s.
