TraleeToday.ie’s coverage of the Rose of Tralee International Festival is brought to you by AIB Tralee…
TRIBESMAN Shane McHugh has topped the poll among the 33 International Roses and Rose Escorts to become the Benetti Menswear Rose Escort of the Year at the 2022 Rose of Tralee International Festival.
Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result live on RTÉ One during the first night of the Rose of Tralee TV Show in the Kerry Sports Academy.
Shane who is paired with Ohio Rose, Sarah McInerney is a Policy Specialist working in Financial Regulation and is studying toward qualifying as a Barrister at the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.
He hails from a family beef farm just off the N17 in Tuam, Co. Galway, is a staunch Galwegian and is proud to be representing the maroon and white.
Shane is committed to giving back to his community and has volunteered for Hospice and St. Vincent de Paul and when not losing money at the Galway Races, Shane can be found either on a tennis court attempting in vain to give Roger Federer a run for his money or on a dancefloor, jiving to the best of Irish and American Country Music.
Shane McHugh said he has enjoyed every moment of this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival: “The entire experience, from the first day in Ashdown Park in April, right up until today, I’ve enjoyed every single second of it. We were promised a unique experience, and it’s been more than delivered on.
“The highlight for me has simply been getting to know 32 other fantastic lads and 33 talented and absolutely fantastic women. Seeing how the Festival celebrates Irish women; and both connects and celebrates the diaspora worldwide. And the knowledge that I now have a couch somewhere across the world to visit is an added bonus!
“I’m in shock following the announcement, I didn’t see it coming. Out of the group of 33 Rose Escorts, I think every one of us is qualified for the role of Escort of the Year and I’ll do my best to represent this fine group of lads.”
The 33 Benetti Menswear Rose Escorts 2022 have been gifted with exquisite attire from the Benetti Menswear brand for the Live TV Shows. In addition, Shane will receive a prize valued at €2,000 from Benetti Menswear.
SENIOR FOOTBALL: Dr. Crokes 1-13; Austin Stacks 0-11.
Our trip to Killarney on a fine Sunday afternoon (21st Aug) for this third and final round robin game of the Club Championship ended with a five points defeat and now puts us in a relegation play-off against Kenmare Shamrocks ( who ended bottom of Group A) to determine if we are to stay in next season’s competition.
We started well with three opening points on the board – all from play – inside the first seven minutes from Seán Quilter, David Mannix and team captain, Michael O’Donnell. A minute later Crokes opened their account and added three more to take the lead after 14 minutes. We equalized again a minute later from a Joe O’Connor point from play.
That turned out to be the last time we were level in the game. Crokes added two more during the second quarter to give them a two points lead at half time (0-6 to 0-4).
That was still the difference between the teams at the end of the third quarter when both sides had chalked up a further four points each – ours coming from Shane O’Callaghan, Michael O’Gara and Jordan Kissane (just two minutes on the pitch at that stage) – all from play – and one from a David Mannix free. Then in the 47th minute Crokes got through for the only goal of the game to give them a five points lead and that was still the difference between the sides at the final whistle with both sides scoring three points each during the remaining quarter of the game. Two of our second half substitutes were of target from play – Cian Purcell and Conor Horan and the final score of the game coming from a David Mannix free.
Team: Wayne Guthrie, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, Niall Fitzmaurice, Conor Jordan, Jack O’Shea, Adam Curran, Joe O’Connor (0-1), Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (0-1), Michael O’Gara (0-1), Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), Armin Heinrich, Seán Quilter (0-1), Gearóid Fitzgerald, David Mannix (0-3 – two frees).
Subs used: Jordan Kissane (38m) (0-1), Cian Purcell (38m) (0-1), Paul O’Sullivan (43m), Conor Horan 51m) (0-1), Eoghan Carroll (59m).
MINOR FOOTBALL: For the first time at Minor level there will now be a Club Championship competition, commencing next Saturday week. There will be eight teams in five groups. There will be a quarter final, a semi final and a final in each group. The four quarter final losers will go into a Shield semi final. The quarter final pairings in our Group A are – ourselves away to Rathmore; Kenmare Shamrocks .v. Dr. Crokes; Keel/Listry .v. Kilcummin and Laune Rangers .v. Ardfert. At the moment all quarter final games are fixed for Saturday, 3rdSeptember at 4pm.
CELEBRATIONS: Festival of Kerry activity was not the only celebrations taking place during the week. The match was played in Strand Road before a large crowd on yet another glorious day. It was a good open and entertaining game of football with both sides attacking at every opportunity. Templenoe started brightly with Stephen O’Sullivan from a free and Killian Spillane from play opening the scoring.
Then three points on the trot from the boot of Jack Savage (2f) put the Narries in front for the first time 14 minutes in. But there was never more than one point separating the sides in the second quarter. Killian Spillane with a mark and Stephen O’Sullivan from a free briefly edged Templenoe ahead to make the score 0-03 to 0-04 after 17 minutes.
After that the points starting coming thick and fast for the remainder of the first half with Kerins O’Rahillys tagging on another four points courtesy of Gearoid Savage (f), Jack Savage from a 45 and a free and veteran David Moran. While Templenoe replied promptly each time with Sean Sheehan (m), Gavin Crowley and Killian Spillane all splitting the posts.
Half Time Score: Kerins O’Rahillys 0-07, Templenoe 0-07.
Kerins O’Rahillys were in more need of result than Templenoe, all be it that the visitors did not have a semi-final spot fully secured going into this contest.
At the restart. O’Rahillys immediately pulled two points clear with Barry John Keane fisting ball the over the bar, before Jack Savage added another from a placed ball. Templenoe did reply with Sean Sheehan raising his second white flag of the day in the 36th minute to cut the deficit to one point, but it would take Templenoe another eleven minutes before they would eventually get their next score.
Kerins O’Rahillys meanwhile were hitting a purple patch and had the next three in a row all coming from their sharp shooter Jack Savage, one from play and two from frees. This made the score 0-12 to 0-08 after 46 minutes and put the hosts in a strong position going into the final quarter.
Templenoe fearing that this game was beginning to slip introduced a few subs, including the welcome return to action of Cian Hallissey in a bid to stem the tide. Killian Spillane thumped over a much needed score from a free, to keep the hosts in the contest.
Then in the 28th minute came the game changer, when a high ball in from Gavin Crowley was tipped down by Josh Crowley Holland to Killian Spillane, who clinically finished the ball to the net. The sides were now level for the 7th time, but there remained a few minutes for either side to grab a winner.
Jack Savage did nail one more free for the hosts, but Adrian Spillane was in no mood to finish second best and he duly equalized shortly before the full time whistle. Well done to all our players and management on securing a semi-final spot and topping the group
Final Score: Kerins O’Rahillys 0-13, Templenoe 1-10.
Scorers:
Templenoe: Killian Spillane 1-04 (1f) (1m), Stephen O’Sullivan 0-02 (2f), Sean Sheehan 0-02 (1m), Adrian Spillane 0-01, Gavin Crowley 0-01.

NÓTAÍ NA mBAN
Togetherness is visible on our teams throughout the ladies in Strand Road. Great friendships have been made since the start of the season.
After a long summer holiday dare we say it … nearly time to go back to school. It’s never too late to join football. Through participation in a team sport one can learn so many values – teamwork , fair play, honesty, respect for themselves and others and discipline. There is a lot of evidence showing that sport and exercise have a positive effect on physical health. It also develops skills to cope with competition, winning and losing!
Parental support is a key to ensuring our children continue to play football. May thanks as always to everyone!
Bring a friend from school . Best wishes to everyone returning and especially to those starting a new school in 2022.

Braving the unpredictable weather our under 7’s were delighted to be back training on the familiar ground of Caherslee on Friday. This week there was a strong emphasis on perfecting our pick up and pucking skills, the hours of practice at home is really starting to show in these players and the coaches were very impressed.
As always training was sealed with the infamous match to display those well honed hurling skills. Well done to this week’s players of the week Fionn Hegarty & James Higgins O’Sullivan and last weeks players of the week Aidan Kelly & Darragh Moriarty. Well done boys.
U8 Camogie
On Wednesday night our U8 Camogie players welcomed Abbeykillix to Caherslee. Our girls started strong and played well from the start. We were up against great competition. The energy levels were high and our girls really got stuck in and didn’t stop pushing forward.
We also have two Rosebuds in our team this year, Lilly McDonald and Hannah Hobbert wishing them the best of luck in this year’s Rose of Tralee! Well done to everyone involved, thanks to Abbeykillix for travelling and to our referees Óran and Shauna.
U10 Camogie
The girls had a great night of hurling on Wednesday as they hosted Abbeykilix in Caherslee. Parnells started slow but by the third quarter were clocking scores on the board and finished strong against a competitive Abbeykilix side.
The girls showed great skill and determination and it was a very impressive match to watch. Well done to all the girls and a massive thanks to Abbeykilix for the visit – a pleasure as always to host. Thanks also to lana our referee on the night.
U9 Hurling
Well done to our U9s who played three 11-a-side matches against Kilmoyley, Abbeydorney and St Brendans in Kilmoyley last Friday night. This was probably the first time this bunch of players would have played on pitches that size and they performed really well displaying great skills and fighting to the end in every match. Well done boys!
U14 Camogie
Our U14 Amber team had a fantastic win on Tuesday night against Killarney. Both teams showed great skill on the night but Parnells seemed to bring all they have been learning to the game with unbelievable teamwork to bring the final score to 3.3 to 3.1. Well done girls!! A fantastic performance.
U15 Hurling
The U15 boys yet again were up against Ballyduff in another final on Sunday. This time it was the County League final and the match was held in Abbeydorney. This was another very close affair with the sides level at half time 1-6 to 0-9.
In the second half Ballyduff fought hard to lead for most of game. However, a goal in the last few minutes by Eoin Costelloe sealed another victory for the team. Final score: Parnells 2-11 Ballyduff 2-9. This match marks the end of a very enjoyable and successful season for this group of players and management. Well done all.

The under 10s have a Blitz next Sunday away in Milltown and the under 8s will have their training session. We will send all formation out to parents in due course.
U12 Girls
The girls had two really contrasting sessions in Ballyseedy this week, Wednesday night in the rain and Sunday morning in the blistering heat. The girls have shown great commitment this summer and the energy levels and intensity has been a joy to watch.
Thanks to the parents and guardians for bringing the girls to training every week, it’s great to see friendships growing which will hopefully last for years to come.We will train on Wednesday evening at 7 and Sunday morning at midday.
U14 GIRLS
What a difference a few days make! On Friday of last week the John Mitchels u14 girls travelled to play Ballymac in the North Kerry League, with discussions between both teams about about the heat.
Fast forward three days later and our home game against Currow had to be abandoned due to thunder and lightning and torrential rain.

This will be followed the following Tuesday by an away trip to Listowel to play Listowel Emmets at 7pm.

UNDER 11 BOYS
We welcomed the Rockies to Ballyseedy on Thursday night in Round 3 of the Central League .
What a performance by both our U11 teams against two strong Rock teams. Our boys showed their dedication , heart and no little skill and put on an exhibition of football in both games. Great to see all those smiling faces after the game , the future is bright .
Training continues Sunday morning at 10.30. We are away to our friend in Na Gaeil next Thursday night at 7pm . All support greatly appreciated.
UNDER 13 BOYS
On Wednesday there was another good win for our U13 B team against Austin Stacks in the Central League on a scoreline of 5-7 to 0-8.
Our Bs remain unbeaten in the central league going into the final round of games and are now guaranteed a semi final spot.
On Saturday, the focus was firmly set on the Rose Cup, which made a welcome return following a Covid enforced hiatus with teams travelling from Cork, Limerick and Waterford as well as the home representatives. First up for us was Churchill and this proved to be a tough battle as always.
The concession of an early goal wasn’t a deterrent as we came back well to secure a 4 point victory. Our next group game was versus Ballyduff Upper from Waterford which resulted in a comfortable victory for our lads but full credit to the Deise lads who fought hard to the end. The final group game was a straight shoot out with Cordal to decide who qualified for the Shield or Cup.
Our boys were really hitting their groove now and ran out convincing winners to top the group and set up a clash with Legion in the Cup Semi Final. Playing with the wind in the first half, the boys built up a nice lead but the concession of two goals in quick succession just before half time saw us level at the break.
The lads knew they had to up it for the 2nd half and in a fantastic display of football ran out 6 point winners in the end in what was a brilliant game of football by both sides.
Ardfert lay in wait in the final, very much an unknown quantity but who had qualified impressively from the other side of the draw. Some great football in the first half saw us build up a comfortable lead by half time.
Ardfert came out like men possessed after the break though, and reduced the deficit to a single point. The game was now very much in the melting pot but our lads showed true character to turn the momentum back our way again and run out victors by a 7 point margin.
All credit to Ardfert who played some fantastic football throughout the competition and contributed to a high class and dramatic final!
Cody Murphy accepted the cup as captain of the team from the reigning Rose of Tralee Sinéad Flanagan to the great joy of his teammates, parents and supporters alike.
It was a brilliant day out and kudos to the Rose Cup organisers for putting on a superbly run tournament. Well done to all our lads on a well deserved victory. They represented John Mitchels fantastically on the day and are great ambassadors for the club.
Many thanks to Mark McEvoy for supplying well deserved treats for the team after the final. In an apt footnote, coach Sean Field was celebrating a 2nd Rose Cup victory having previously captured a winners medal as a player in the inaugural competition.
He couldn’t/wouldn’t tell us what year though and we won’t mention what club he played for either!! Next Sunday sees us play our final group games in the Central Region League vs NaGaeil, time to be confirmed.Training continues Wednesday at 7pm and Friday at 8pm.

SYMPATHY
On behalf of all in John Mitchel’s we extend a sincere sympathy to the family of the following:
Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship 2022: Last Saturday, August 20th 2022 Na Gaeil hosted Spa in Round 3 of the senior club championship knowing that a win would put them through to a county semi-final. Na Gaeil played against the breeze in the first half but started well with 2 frees converted by Diarmuid O’Connor.
Spa added 2 frees of their own to level the game after 10 minutes. They then added 2 more frees before Diarmuid O’Connor got Na Gaeils 3rd point, again from a free, to leave the score 4-3 in favour of the visitors.
Two more frees from Diarmuid O’Connor put us ahead 5 points to 4 and it got even better for Na Gaeil when Jack Sheehan and Dan Goggin added points of their own to stretch our lead to 3 points. Spa added another free in injury time to cut the gap to 2 points at halftime.
Spa were quickly out of the blocks at the start of the second half and added 2 points from David Spillane to level the game. Soon afterwards Jack Bourke hit back with a point to put Na Gaeil ahead for what proved to be the last time in the game. Spa then took over, adding 7 points without reply in a 15 minute spell to put them out of reach and from there the result was never in doubt.
With just 8 minutes to go Darragh Reen added a point from play and this was followed by a point from Andrew Barry to briefly cut the margin to 4 points but Spa added 2 points of their own. Diarmuid O’Connor converted his 6th free of the evening before Spa struck for the only goal of the game in injury time.
Diarmuid O’Connor had the last score of the evening with yet another free but Spa ran out comfortable winners in the end on a scoreline of Na Gaeil 0-12, Spa 1-16. Despite losing the game our boys and management will be delighted to have preserved their senior club status for next year.
Also it was great to see Andrew Barry back after a long layoff.

U13 girls: Hard luck to our u13 girls who lost out to Kerins O’Rahillys last Sunday in the semi-final of the championship.
Rose Cup: The Rose Cup took place in Killeen last Saturday after being absent since 2019 due to Covid. It was a welcome sight to see eight teams taking part in Na Gaeil and eight teams taking part in Kerins O Rahillys. Na Gaeil had the honour of hosting the Cup and Shield finals also. In our group were Listowel Emmet’s, Austin Stacks and Killarney Legion and we had three great games.
There was nothing between the teams and we came up short by two points to Listowel Emmet’s. We had a great game against Austin Stacks which ended in a draw and we conceded a late goal against Legion which meant them winning by same. However, Na Gaeil had twenty lads involved on the day who all got to play a minimum of half a game each. Every player was outstanding and it was tremendous to see how hard our boys tried in every game and were really unlucky not to get out of a tough group.
All the games were played in a real sporting fashion and we would like to thank all the teams in our group for this but also to all teams as the day was a great occasion. Congratulations to John Mitchels for winning out the Cup and congratulations to Douglas for winning out the Shield. We would also like to thank all the referees and the Town board for running a great competition and the Bons Secours for sponsoring same.
Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents and volunteers in Na Gaeil who had two great fields set up and also provided fabulous complimentary food and teas and coffees all day. The Rose Cup was a great day in Na Gaeil and we were delighted to have it back running again.
U9 boys: The under 9 boys hosted Dingle on Sunday morning in Killeen. We fielded 3 teams and had 3 matches. All boys got stuck in and we look forward to returning the fixture next Sunday in Dingle.
U11 boys: Another great session last Sunday morning. We mainly concentrated on maintaining possession while in the tackle and protecting the ball which lads did very well. We will be away to Laune Rangers this Thursday at 7pm.
U15 boys: Well done to the Na Gaeil lads who are part of the St Brendans Board U15 team who beat Mid Kerry in Blennerville last Wednesday in round 2 of the U15 County Championship shield competition. Those lads are Jamie Schoenmaker, Ruadhan Clifford, Conor Lucey, Jeaic Canty, Liam Cooper, Paddy McElligott, Brian Heaphy and Cillian Griffin. They have now qualified for the semi-final where they will take on West Kerry next Wednesday, 24th, in Blennerville at 6.45pm.
Tralee Parnells: Congratulations to Tralee Parnells u15 team, particularly the 7 Na Gaeil boys involved, who last Sunday added the Division 1 County League title to their County Féile title when once again getting the better of Ballyduff in a titanic battle. Our lads involved were Jeaic Canty, Liam Cooper, Ryan Sheehy, Brian Reidy, William Somers, Karl Cronin & Cathal Fitzgerald.

U5
Under 5’s enjoyed a lovely sunny morning of training and were delighted to welcome some of our Ukrainian neighbours to join us. We practiced our ball skills, hop and solo. We used the obstacle course to get moving and we played a mini match. The boys and girls enjoyed a game of sharks and fishes to finish the session. Great running by everyone to get past the sharks! Well done to our players of the week Elsie and Harry.
U7
We had twenty-five kids tog out Sunday morning last, for our game’s vs Na Gaeil. We broke into four teams and judging by the smiles after the games they all seemed to have enjoyed themselves. Back next Sunday, to prepare for more games the week after hopefully!
Thanks to Fiona, Noel, Mike, Paul, James, and Sharon Poff for helping out.
U8 Girls/ U10 Girls
Well done to all our Under 8 and Under 10 St Pats girls who enjoyed plenty of match experience at St Pats last Friday evening. We had visiting teams from Annascaul, Dingle and Castlegregory with four pitches running simultaneously. The showers didn’t stop the enthusiasm for some great sporting fun. The girls were rewarded with treats & drinks afterwards where photos were taken including our 2 ‘Rosebuds’ from Annascaul & St Pats who are gearing up for a busy & memorable weekend!
U11 Boys
A Great turnout last Thursday for the challenge games against two strong Churchill teams which our lads battled well. Our next game in the Central Region is away to An Ghaeltacht this Thursday at 7pm.
U12 Girls
Well done to everyone Sunday Morning who played in our fun match with the boys. We showed them how it’s done. Also Well done to Ailbhe who won our player of the week trophy this week. Ailbhe was our well-deserved winner for always giving it 100% in every game and she is another u10 player. She also stood out Sunday Morning in our match against the boys getting into great positions and running off the ball. Well done, Ailbhe.
U13
At the time of writing the U13’s were scheduled to play Castlegregory A team on Tuesday the 23rd at home in St Pat’s. This is their second game in the Central League sponsored by Kelliher’s Toyota.
The previous week the U13’s had a B team game versus Ardfert and also participated in the Rose Cup. The Rose Cup competition took the form of a blitz with the team playing three games against St. Senan’s, Laune Rangers, and Douglas, respectively. Douglas went on to win the Shield final.
Seniors
Our Round 3 game was played on Sunday last; the weather was very warm for both teams. The game began with each team wanting to walk away with a win, David O Callaghan scored first for us. In the first few minutes a penalty was given to St Senan’s to which they scored; they also added another point to their tally.
Fergal O Brien and Kieran Hurley put each a point on the board. St Senan’s got three points in quick succession; teamwork was evident with Fergal O Brien pass to Jordan Conway which allowed for a point of the bar.
Kieran Hurley got the ball from a bad pass and scored a point. Jordan Conway and Kieran Hurley were next to show teamwork working in our favour with a point at the end of it all. Kieran Hurley was last to add a point to the scoreboard before the whistle blew for half time to read St Pats 0-07 St Senan’s 1-04.
With the conditions still very warm St Pats scored the first four points in this half with them coming from one from Breandan Savage and three from Fergal O Brien. St Senan’s went up the field and scored themselves a goal and a point to bring it to a draw. Jordan Conway and Eoin Greaney put a point each over the bar.
St Senan’s got another point, with a beautiful pass from Gary Savage to Kieran Hurley it ended in a superb goal. St Senan’s put four points on the board without reply. Jordan Conway with speed up the field added his own point to try to close the gap; St Senan’s got two more points to end the game. St Pats 1-14 St Senan’s 2-12.
The draw for the Kerry Petroleum Junior Premier Club Championship was drawn on Sunday night, St Pats are drawn to play against St Michael’s Foilmore on Sunday the 28th at 2.30pm Venue to be confirmed please keep an eye on O Shea’s Gala, St Pats Clubhouse and Byrnesworth when venue is confirmed.

Sympathy
The club would like to extend its sympathy to the families and friends of Donal O Connor Formerly Main Street Blennerville and Lohercannon.
On Saturday evening, in mostly dry & overcast conditions, our Senior Men’s team faced Keel GAA in Round 3 of the Junior Premier Championship in Keel GAA grounds.
In a cagey opening period – Keel GAA showed great tenacity and hunger but also reflected this on the scoreboard with Keel GAA leading at the break 0-9 to 0-6.
However, it was Ballymac who started the second period the stronger and had 4 unanswered points to take a one-point lead. It was a nip and tuck battle throughout and with a few minutes remaining in normal time, Keel scored a goal to ensure there was more to come in this nailbiter of a championship encounter.
However, it was Ballymac GAA who showed the character to pull out the win in the finish on the road, with a score line of Keel 1-11 v Ballymac 0-16.
This now sets us up a home Quarter Final next Saturday 27th at 6pm against St Senans.
This is a big game for the team and management so please try to come out and support them.
Ladies News
Senior Ladies
This Monday night 22nd August, we begin our first year in Junior B Championship with a home game v our neighbours John Mitchels. Throw in at 7.30pm. All Support is Welcome.
U17 County Championship Quarter Final Division A
With a much-depleted squad our U17’s travelled to Kenmare with just 16 players, but what a performance that the girls put on from No.1 to No.16, winning 5-13 to 2-8. Keeping up the good form from the Minor County Semi Final, our young ladies had put the game out of ISG’s range by half time leading by 3-7 to 1-2, with the ISG goal coming right on the stroke of halftime. Indeed, ISG did not score a point from play until the 45th minute.
We now move onto the County Semi Final and up a level to play the winners of Cromane or Scart away from home.
Squad as follows, Kerry Hennessy, Alice Brosnan, Anna Collins, Ciara Kerins (Captain), Clodagh Coffey, Rachel Griffin, Sarah Scanlon, Keelin Enright (2-1), Roisin Rahilly (0-4), Rachel Creedon (1-3), Kate Collins (1-1), Ella Quirke (0-2), Jill Quirke, Laura Sugrue (1-1), Rose Brosnan and Sarah O’Rourke.
U15 County Championship Quarter Final Division C
On a wet Wednesday evening an under strength Ballymac Ladies U15 side took on a very dangerous Kilcummin side in the Quarter Final of their U15 County Championship. In a ding dong battle for Supremacy that went right down to the final whistle, all our young ladies were outstanding. At half time we led by 4-2 to 2-1, but by full time there was just two points in it…7-4 to 6-5. Congratulations to both Fiona McCarthy and Jill Quirke on their hat-tricks.
Squad is as follows Sarah O’Rourke, Molly O’Connor, Laura West, Rose Brosnan, Abigail Geary, Maire Culloty, Sorcha Healy, Anna Collins (1-0), Katie Turner, Emma Daly, Michelle O’Connor (0-1), Emily Heffernan (0-1), Katie Landers, Jill Quirke (3-2), Fiona McCarthy (3-0), Sinead Scanlon, Olivia Sheahan.
We now move on to play the winners of Beaufort v Listowel Emmets in the Semi Final at home in Ballymac. Semi-final v Beaufort fixed for this Tuesday 6.30 throw in at home
U13 County Championship Division D Quarter Final.
On Friday night in very testing conditions at home in Ballymac, our U13 Ladies took on a very determined Beale side. For much of this game, it was a see-saw battle, however Ballymac Ladies kept their heads in front.
This was largely from two very early goals. At halftime the score was 3-2 to 2-2. For the next 15 minutes there was only a point or two in the game, but the final quarter belonged to us, as we strode clear to win by 5-10 to 4-4. We now move onto a County Semi Final versus Spa at home in Killarney, possibly at 6.30pm on Sunday 21st.
Squad is as follows, Grace Kelly, Natalie Turner, Kate O’Neill, Alice Savage, Sinead Scanlon, Sorcha Healy, Aedin Healy, Emily Heffernan (1-1), Katie Turner (1-3), Meabh O’Connell, Michelle O’Connor (1-3), Molly O’Connor (0-3), Eabha Jones, Fiona McCarthy (2-0) Tara Slattery, Cait Griffin and Aoibhinn Sheahan.
U14 County League Division 4 B Final
This Final is due to take place on Thursday Evening 25th August with venue and time to be confirmed.
Academy
Our U5 academy training session was well attended this week with 15 players ready and rearing for fun. In this week’s session we increased our focus on hand passing and pickups in drills and on our mini matches, and had a bit of fun playing rollerball and seeing how many silly ways we can flick up bibs off the ground.
We welcomed a new player to our squad who did brilliantly joining in all our games, well done Elizabeth! New players always welcome.
Under 9s
Our u 9 s continued training this morning at the main pitch between 11-12.
We had a good turnout as usual under glorious sunshine.
Kick passing, Hand passing and shooting for scores were the skills that were concentrated on this morning.
We play in a Go Game Blitz on Friday night next in Churchill, so we hope all players make a special effort to be there.
We advise all our players to continue practicing at home.
Under 11
U11 Boys played Ardfert on Thursday 18th August. It was a fairly evenly matched game. We had some u9 players to help out.
On Saturday 20th August 14 boys togged out for the Jerry Foley U11 blitz over in Farranfore. The boys played brilliantly and got through to the semi-final. They were very unlucky not to get to the final but it was a great experience and they put in a huge effort and the coaches are very proud.
We have no game next week and the Milltown blitz has been rescheduled to Sunday Sept 5th. Ballymac Abú!
Under 13s
Our U13 boys travelled all the way to Tralee on Saturday to complete in this year’s Rose Cup. Featuring the best U13 boys’ teams in the county and teams from Cork and Limerick all was set for a cracker of a tournament.
First up we faced Austin Stacks and our boys put in a great display of team football to take the points with a comfortable win.
In round 2 we were up against Ardfert who started well and built up a commanding lead which we could not claw back before the final whistle.
In round 3 it was all to play for against Fr Casey’s of Abbeyfeale with a place in the shield semi-final up for grabs. Our boys played well and with the breeze and went into the break 3 points up. Fr Casey’s piled on the pressure in the second half but our lads held firm. A late goal from the limerick side saw them take the win and progress to the next round.
It was a great day of football and the lads did the club proud.

THE weather stayed dry last night for Recovery Haven Kerry’s annual Celebration of Light ceremony at Tralee Bay Wetlands.
Run in association with the Rose of Tralee Festival, the poignant event unites those touched by cancer and it remembers those we have lost.
The evening was MC’d by Sean Lyons and featured a performance from the Kerry Choral Union. It also included prayers and readings from a number of special guests, including the reigning Rose of Tralee Sinead Flanagan, Recovery Haven Kerry founder, Marian Barnes and long-time Recovery Haven supporter, Cathal Walshe.

A number of this year’s Rose of Tralee contestants and escorts also attended with Rose Festival CEO, Anthony O’Gara and the current Rose of Tralee Sinead Flanagan.
The emotional release of candles and stones formed part of the celebration with members of Banna Sea Rescue making sure the candles floated out on the water. Scroll down for photos…

SATURDAY night was alright for partying as the Rose Parade returned after three years.
Brian Hurley proved an adept MC for the evening as he introduced all the participants from the main stage on Denny Street.
The biggest cheer was reserved for the Kerry Rose Édaein O’Connell who took her place on the stage with the other 32 Roses at the end of the parade. Hopefully she’ll grace the stage again tomorrow night when the new Rose of Tralee is crowned! Scroll down for photos…

FOR the second time in a month, thousands of people lined the streets of Tralee to wave and cheer on an evening of celebration.
While it was the victorious footballers being hailed back in July, the crowds on Saturday night were celebrating the return of the Rose parade after a period of three years.
The weather didn’t play ball though and the rain came just as the parade started. However, the crowds stayed to see the 33 Roses who waved from the floats in what was another extravaganza of noise and colour.
The evening came to a close with the spectacular fireworks display leaving the crowd to enjoy the rest of the entertainment on the streets and in the bars of the town. Scroll down for photos…

KERRY will, like the rest of the country, become a cultural playground where everyone is invited to seek out culture around every corner on Friday, September 23.
This will mark the seventeenth year of Culture Night – an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity, and the arts. Kerry will be host to a programme of events on the night that offers something for everyone.
“Kerry is lucky to have enough talent and culture to fill every night of the year with colour and celebration,” said Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Councillor John Francis Flynn, who launched Culture Night Kerry recently.

“Culture Night is a highlight of the calendar for arts in Kerry and I am grateful to all the artists, community groups, theatres, and institutions that come together on the night to shine a light on all that the Kingdom has to offer. I look forward to Friday 23 September and hope to see you there.”
The Cathaoirleach launched Culture Night Kerry outside Library Place in Killorglin. Library Place houses Kerry’s Collection of 250 artworks by Pauline Bewick.
A former ambassador for Culture Night, Bewick’s legacy and her art will be celebrated with a late opening at Library Place on Culture Night.
Throughout Ireland, doors to cultural institutions such as museums, theatres and arts centres will open late. Special events are programmed at participating locations, and, thanks to the continued support of the Arts Council and Kerry County Council, all activities are free of charge.

In Tralee, experience places such as Collis Sandes House like never before with ‘Build’ – an art workshop by Me and the Moon which invites children to build how they see their town’s future.
Later in the evening, the halls of Collis Sandes House will come alive with music by string students of Sempre Music Academy as they accompany a special historical tour of the house.
Culture Night has evolved to become a collaborative experience with an emphasis on opening doors, welcoming people into new spaces and the discovery of different experiences.
Niamh O’Sullivan, Acting Director of Services for Economic and Community Development at Kerry County Council, welcomed the launch of Culture Night in Kerry.
“Culture Night showcases the wealth of talent that exists throughout the County. It is an opportunity to connect people to cultural activities and to invite people to celebrate the very best of our culture,” she said.
The courtyard in Killarney House and Garden will be the setting of a not to be missed performance of Guido’s Impossible Circus by the Fanzinis. Followed by a late-night look at the books with a tour of the Killarney House Library – not usually accessible to the public.
An open call for applications for Culture Night Kerry welcomed proposals for events from artists, venues, and community groups earlier this summer. Responses to the open call created this year’s programme for Culture Night Kerry. Hannah Pinckheard, Assistant Arts Officer for Kerry County Council, commented that,
“Through an open call we were able to ensure that the talent of an artist could be seen in their town, that the building with a story could stay open late for its neighbours, and that community groups could celebrate their work in their local area. We are grateful to those who took the time to contribute and look forward to sharing the programme with everyone.”
This year’s programme will have a greater focus on late night events through additional support by the Arts Council. Late night events will be scheduled for after 9pm. Street spectacles, fire shows, and gigs will all form part of the programme.
Culture Night invites everyone, everywhere, on one night to discover and celebrate all that our culture is today. One night for all.
For further information about Culture Night please visitwww.culturenight.ie An e-brochure detailing all events in Kerry will be available in September from the Arts Office website.
