Record Number Of Patients On Trolleys In UHK For May

.

THE number of patients waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry in May was the highest for that month since records began and almost double May 2022 numbers.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation trolley watch figures for the month showed there were 276 patients waiting on trolleys at UHK in May compared to 146 in 2022 and the previous high of 272 in 2018.

The INMO confirmed that this month has been the worst May for overcrowding nationwide since the union began counting trolleys in 2006. There were 11,856 admitted patients, including 300 children, treated on trolleys or chairs in hospitals around the country this month.

Continued below…

.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has called on the HSE to take immediate corrective measures to deal with the ongoing trolley crisis.

INMO General Secretary, Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “The number of patients we have seen on trolleys in the month of May are higher than January 2023, when we saw the worst levels of daily hospital overcrowding since the INMO began counting trolleys. This type of overcrowding at the beginning of summer must be immediately addressed to prevent an even more chaotic winter.

“Nurses are working in a system that has normalised over 500 people a day on trolleys. They have had little to no reprieve from overcrowding. Our members are reporting high levels of burnout and their intention to leave their current work area is higher than it has ever been.”

“We need to see a laser-like focus from Government and the HSE to tackling the overcrowding crisis in our hospitals once and for all.”

IT was a cloudy, but dry Sunday morning in the Town Park as pupils, their families and staff from St John’s Parochial School Tralee gathered for a family fun run in Tralee Town Park.

There was a lovely atmosphere as the school community came together with the aim of the run to raise funds to build a playground for the children within the safety of the school grounds.

Plenty of preparation went into the day and it certainly paid off as it was a fun way to spend a Sunday morning. Scroll down for photos…

Billy Ryle: Last Minute Advice For State Exams Candidates

.

Guidance Counsellor Billy Ryle has some last minute advice for 2023 State Exams candidates to help them reap the rewards for all the hard work they’ve put in…

The waiting is almost over for about 134,800 Leaving Cert and Junior Cycle students as the exams get under way next Wednesday, 7th June.

Exam entries are up by 3,400 or 2.5% on last year’s figure. 60,200 have applied for the Leaving Cert Established (LC) exam, 3,800 for the Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) and 70,800 for the Junior Cycle exam.

The Leaving Cert exam returned to the traditional format last year after two years of calculated and accredited grades.

Continued below…

.

Minister Norma Foley has confirmed that there will be no ‘cliff edge’ plunge or automatic return to pre-pandemic exam results for Leaving Certificate candidates this year.

That means overall marks this year will be no lower than last year’s results. This will once again be achieved by allowing the State Examinations Commission (SEC) to apply a ‘post-marking intervention,’ which will increase candidates marks.

Options

There will also be a copious supply of CAO, Further Education, Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Employment places available for school leavers in a buoyant economy.

So, it’s all good news for candidates lining up for the Leaving Cert exam. The Leaving Certificate exams, the Junior Cycle exams and the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) exams will run until Tuesday, 27th June, Monday, 19th June and Thursday, 15th June, respectively.

Weather Alert

In the current heatwave, it’s imperative for all exam candidates to avoid over-exposure to the blistering sun and to stay hydrated.

Enjoy your swim, but resist the temptation of lengthy sunbathing sessions and take lots of cold drinks.

It’s difficult to resist the glorious weather but be sensible and careful. Apply sun block, wear sunglasses and a hat with a wide brim. It will be worth it if you avoid sunburn and if you go into the exams full of energy.

Final Weekend

This is the final weekend for major revision. Stick to your study plan on Saturday and Sunday. Concentrate on subjects being examined during the first week. As the exams run into the subsequent weeks, the optional subjects are nicely spaced out allowing for study days.

Prioritise

Leaving Cert candidates should prioritise last minute work in English, Home Economics, Engineering, Geography and Mathematics Paper One and get it done by Sunday night.

Likewise Junior Cert candidates should do the same in English, Religious Education, Irish, History, Geography and Maths.

On Monday, concentrate on the tips and predictions for subjects being examined the first week. Don’t cram on the days before the exam as this may cause confusion and fatigue.

Alertness

Spent an hour or two on Tuesday skimming over your notes for Wednesday’s exams and leave it at that.

Some relaxed leisure will be more beneficial than spending the day cramming material that you may not recall anyway. You need a clear and alert mind going into the exams on Wednesday morning and for the duration of the exam period.

Notes

On the evening before each exam subject spend an hour or so looking over your notes so that the important concepts and ideas are fresh in your mind.

Heavy study sessions on the night prior to any paper are not a good idea as you will be exhausted the following morning.

Instead, relax and get a good night’s rest. Put all thoughts of the following day’s exam out of your mind. If you find it difficult to sleep, try a little non-academic reading for a short while.

Personal Materials

Over the next few days check your equipment and assemble your exam materials – black or blue biros, pencils, ruler, eraser, drawing instruments, calculator and so on.

Have at least two biros in case one doesn’t work properly. It’s time, too, to organise your personal needs such as a watch and tissues.

Continued below…

.

Relax

A few nerves are normal on the first day so be prepared to deal with it. A relaxation exercise or maybe a shower to freshen up will do the trick.

Eat a nutritious breakfast as you’ll need the extra reserves of energy. Finally, go through your equipment checklist before leaving home.

Pre-Exam Mode

On Wednesday morning arrive at the exam centre at least a half hour before the exam begins.

For all subsequent exams be present about fifteen minutes before the appointed time. Spend the few minutes before entering the exam centre on your own in peace and quiet.

At all costs, avoid groups that are involved in last minute revision. If you need to, use the bathroom before you enter the exam centre.

Be in your seat a few moments before the exam is due to begin. Synchronise your watch with the clock on the wall and use your watch or the clock to help you pace your work.

Exam Centre Check

Check your seat and desk for firmness and stability. A shaky desk will torment you and distract you during the exam. When the answer book is distributed, fill in the required details and read the directions.

When you receive your question paper read the instructions carefully in case there is any change of format. Don’t be put off by your first glance at the paper.

It’s new and it will look unfamiliar at first. Once the exam begins, keep to your prepared answering plan and address the questions that are asked.

Continued below…

.

Post-mortem

If you finish a paper before the time is up, do not leave the exam centre. Recheck your work and extra information may come to you.

Attempt an extra question only when you have thoroughly answered the previous questions. Once an exam is over, spend as little time as possible on a post-mortem.

Focus on the next paper and stay in exam mode until you finish your final subject. Remember the Leaving Cert is a marathon rather than a sprint.

When the entire exam is over, forget about it and enjoy your summer. There is no advantage in dwelling on what might have been. Be happy and satisfied that you have done your best.

Exam Results

Leaving Cert candidates got a timely boost last week when it was announced that Leaving Cert results will be available on Friday, 25th August and the CAO Round One college offers will quickly follow on Wednesday, 30th August.

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) is holding a second set of exams from the 29th June to the 15th July for candidates who experience an extreme medical emergency during an exam or suffer a family bereavement.

So, it’s looking very promising for exam candidates. Go in there and ‘play a blinder.’ Good luck to all candidates starting exams next week.

.

Kerry FC Academy News

.

Kerry FC Academy had 3 teams in cup action at the weekend. The under 17 and 19 teams won in dramatic fashion.

However the under 14 side lost out in an 8 goal thriller. Star billing this week goes to JP Mullin’s under 19 team.

They advanced in the Enda Mc Guill Cup thanks to a nail biting penalty shoot out. They hosted Wexford FC on Sunday afternoon in Mounthawk Park.

The game was played in glorious sunshine and both sides produced some outstanding football, in an entertaining game.

Kerry dominated the opening half but could not get an elusive goal. However Kennedy Amechi put Kerry ahead shortly after the restart following good work by Matthew Carroll in midfield.

The visitors rallied after this but found no way past Obinna Izehi and Sean O Connell at the back. Keeper Richard Healy also produced several top class saves to deny Wexford. However he had no chance with a Filip Wasilewski shot in the 79th minute.

Both sides had chances in the closing stages but neither team could not get a winner ,so the game went to extra time.

Wexford took the lead just after 4 minutes and again it was Wasilewski that found the net. Kerry to their credit rallied and created chances via the skill of Cianan Cooney in attack.

In the closing stages Cooney was instrumental in setting up Kennedy Amechi to grab a late equaliser, to send the game to a dreaded penalty shoot out.

In the shoot out Sean O’Connell, Venis Jahiri, Kennedy Amechi and Cianan Cooney kept their nerve to dispatch great goals to see Kerry FC progress , to the delight of their many supporters. Man of the Match Kennedy Amechi.

The under 17 team also advanced in dramatic fashion,in the Mark Farren Cup. On Saturday they travelled to Cobh to take on Ramblers in Stephen Ireland Park. Kerry took the game to the home side from the kick off.

Tom Healy, Andrew Kerins and Luke Palmer all had chances in the opening half. Kerry should have broke the deadlock in 44th minute when they were awarded a penalty.

However Kyle Foley failed to convert from the spot kick.Cobh came more into the game in the second half. However the Kerry back four of Nathan Aherne,Oran Horgan, Adam Finn and Cian Beirne were in tremendous form throughout the match.

Coalan Mitchell in goal was another player to star as the scoreline suggest. The game eventually went to extra time but Kerry continued to press thanks to good work by sub Jamie Forde.

In the dying minutes that elusive winner game and it was indeed a worthy winner.Josh Bowler was the Kerry hero.

He produced a magical goal in the 122 minute to win an enthralling encounter,to the delight of the travelling fans. Man of the Match Josh Bowler .

Unfortunately on Saturday the U14 team were gallant losers in the Eddie Wallace Cup.They hosted Carlow/Killkenny in Mounthawk Park. However in an entertaining encounter they lost out in an 8 goal spectacle.

The visitors took the lead in the 18th minute following a good passing movement. Kerry dominated for the next 20 minutes. Callum Robertson equalized with a strike to the bottom corner in the 39th minute.

Edison Jahiri put Kerry ahead 3 minutes later with another superb drive from the edge of the box. Kerry created further chances thanks to good work by Shane Donovan and Darragh O’Sullivan in the middle of the park.

However the visitors hit a purple patch at the start of the second half. Callum Slattery and Logan Tennyson both bagged a brace of goals to see them go 5-2 ahead.

Ciaran Murphy reduced the deficit with 12 minutes remaining.Kerry pressed hard in the closing stages and were unlucky not to score again before the final whistle blew.

On the day Jack O,Connor and David O, Donoghue also impressed in defence.

Fixtures – On Saturday Kerry FC under 14 team are away to Bray Wanderers.

National Parks Service Urges Caution During ‘Condition Orange’

.

THE National Parks and Wildlife Service has appealed to the public not to light fires or barbecues in public places.

This appeal is following a ‘Condition Orange’ – High Fire Risk. Be Prepared, issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, valid until June 6.

The NPWS has increased ground crews on fire patrol and ramped up aerial monitoring with helicopters and drones. Early Summer is a precious time for wildlife and their vulnerable young, especially ground-nesting birds and mammals who are now rearing their young.

Continued below…

.

Condition Orange will generally derive from extended periods of low precipitation, moderate relative humidity and low to moderate wind conditions which have the capacity to significantly increase the risk of wildfire initiation and spread.

The Director General of the NPWS, Niall Ó Donnchú, has also asked for everybody’s cooperation to protect nature and said: “While NPWS has increased ground crews and monitoring from the air this week, we still need to enlist your help to protect nature at this high risk time. We ask that members of the public not light fires or barbecues in any National Parks or Nature Reserves, or indeed in nature generally.  We are also asking that the public be vigilant and report any fire activity without delay.”

We hope that this great weather keeps up but, whether it does or not, we will continue to show up and perform to the best of our abilities as we grow from strength to strength each week; sea, táimid ag dul ó neart go neart! Mar sin is dá bhrí sin, if you want your child to join us and if you want to give him/her the opportunity to increase his/her social participation, to make friends and to gain confidence join us next Sunday 4th June at the Austin Stack Club in Connolly Park. (Cathal Ó Sé)
CAID FAOI 13: Last week’s great football action ended on a high note in Connolly Park with both the A and B teams recording good wins over Na Gaeil in the final group games in Phase 2 of the County League. Sin dhá dhea-scéal iontacha at the end of a busy week! We look forward in confidence to our County League semi-finals which are scheduled to be played on Sunday 4th June. Go n-éirí libh, a leaideanna!
We visited Firies GAA Club on Saturday 27th May for a very enjoyable afternoon of football v the local U13 teams and the visiting London Parnells U13 boys. Thanks to everyone in Firies for the hospitality and for being such generous hosts. ‘Well done’ to all 26 Austin Stack Club boys who made the trip and who represented the club so well both on and off the pitch.
Match Reports:
(1) AdeS B: 4-11; John Mitchel Club B: 1-8. Our boys, playing with the aid of a strong breeze, hit the ground running and got some excellent early scores. We showed great teamwork and worked fine scores by winning hard-fought-for possession in our full-back line and by travelling the length of the field at pace on a number of occasions. Though we commanded a strong first half lead, our tenacious defence was undoubtedly the foundation for all our momentum. Our sturdy full-back, Oran O’Regan, lead the line and Séamus Keenan and Conor Hannifin were fearlessly tigerish in the tackle. Our work rate impressed the many bystanders in Ballyseedy as Kian Cronin, Blake Bowler and Tom Dawson gave their all in the middle of the field. Oisín Horan on the 40’ kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout and our ever-vigilant full forward, Joe O’Halloran, lead the team in assists while also contributing a few scores. The returning John Riordan put in a big shift and we had a debutant for The Rock in Jack Maguire, brother of captain for the day, Harry. (Fáilte romhat ar bord, a Jack!) This was a great team performance that was played with great spirit and the boys have to be commended for an excellent squad attitude; ar scáth a chéile a mhairfimid! Rockies Abú!
(2) U13 County League (Division 13A) Phase 2….AdeS B: 5-25; Na Gaeil B: 4-5. It had been a busy few days for the lads having had a 3rd outing in 5 days but they showed no signs of tiredness and expertly produced another good victory. The Stack Club lads started at 100 miles an hour, they dominated the first period with some excellent scores and all the while they kept things tight at the back; all that resulted in building up a big lead….5-15 to 0-0 at half-time. Although the Gaeil team was missing a few players, they never let their heads drop and they kept battling on! They made a good fight of it in the 2nd half and picked off some well-taken goals. However, at the other end The Rock kept the scoreboard ticking over. The game finished at 5-25 to 4-5 in favour of the Stack Club boys. ‘Well done’ to Na Gaeil coaches and players for a great sporting game and for keeping on battling right to the end. Comhghairdeachas to The Rock lads who have continued their great form….resulting from the hard work being put in at training! Yes, indeed, the obair chrua is really showing and they can continue to improve and to put in great performances each week. They can look forward with confidence to their upcoming county semi-final. U13 AdeS B boys: Blake Bowler; Shane Carey, Gearóid Corcoran, Kian Cronin; Ethan Cushen, Conor Hanafin, Albi Gaxha; Shea Horan, Luke Kavanagh; Harry Maguire, Zac Moore, Darragh Moriarty; Joe O’Halloran, Oran O’Regan, Gerard Teahon; Diarmuid Hennessy, Eliot Calleja, Jack Maguire, John Riordan, Mark Foley, Matthew Murphy, Séamus Keenan, Tom Dawson.
(3) U13 County League (Division 1A) Phase 2 League….John Mitchel Club A: 4-15; AdeS A: 0-7. Our U13 A team had a tough evening at the office in their second game in Phase 2 of the County League in Ballyseedy on Wednesday 24th May. Despite playing against a strong breeze, the Austin Stack Club boys made a strong start and the opening quarter was a tight affair with both teams exchanging scores. In the second quarter the home team took control and ended the half with a healthy lead….JM: 2-8; AdeS A: 0-3. The Green‘n’Golds maintained their dominance throughout the second half, though the Black‘n’Amber Brigade kept battling to the end in true Rock unyielding fashion!
(4) U13 County League (Division 1A) Phase 2….AdeS A: 4-16; Na Gaeil A: 1-10. Our A team happily bounced back with a comprehensive win over Na Gaeil in sunny Connolly Park Dé Domhnaigh seo caite (28ú). We started fast with tenacious tackling, hard running, accurate passing and fantastic scores. A joy to watch! The boys pressed from the front and everyone strongly supported teammates-in-possession and they finished the half in control of the game….Na Stacaigh: 3-9; Na Gaeil 0-4. The second half followed a similar theme; there was no let up with the Black‘n’Ambers and the Green‘n’Whites battling bravely and determinedly to the end in a Cúchulainn-v-Ferdia-like combat! Troid go bás? Maith sibh, a bhuachaillí na Carraige!
Focal scoir: thanks to Na Mistéalaigh and to Na Gaeil for two fine sporting games and mórbhuíochas to the referees for their handling of the games. Foireann Faoi 13 AdeS A: David Ahern; Michael Carmody, Kian Cronin, Oisín Horan; Shea Horan, Luke Kavanagh, Billy Kirby; Danny Lane, Tadhg Ó Luasaigh; Dylan McEvoy, Conor Murphy, Jayden O’Dowd; Ryan O’Flaherty, Tadhg O’Regan, Noah Reidy; Mark Riordan, Liam Swords, Ediart Topali, Diarmuid Hennessy, Conor Maguire, Blake Bowler, Harry Maguire. (Dan Ahern)
CAID FAOI 15: On Wednesday 24th May we travelled east to the Cordal GAA Club i gCúil Ó Siocht, the Nook (Cúil = Nook) under the shadow of Mount Eagle….a fitting setting for this important U15 football occasion. Full-size scoreboard, announcer on microphone/loudspeaker giving team and player announcements and the playing of Amhrán na bhFiann greatly added to the build-up and was a moving prelude to a most exciting, thrilling and heart-throbbing evening’s entertainment. Yes, the encounter turned out to be a cracker! Great football was played by both teams; they gave every ounce/gramme of energy and skill that they had! Legion opened the scoring with a well-worked point in the opening minutes. We responded with a good goal (all goals are good!). The early exchanges continued with end to end play. Then we pushed ahead with well-taken points from play and from free kicks. Half-time score…AdeS: 2-7; Legion: 1-4. At half-time we informed/advised the boys that there was still a lot of play left in this game and that Legion would have a strong spell at some stage! D’éist siad linn! Early goals by both teams at the start of the second half meant that we maintained our half-time lead for the opening minutes of the half. But, unfortunately for us, that was to change. In the space of 11 minutes midway through the 2nd half Legion scored a further 3 goals, resulting in them taking the lead. Thankfully, our stalwarts kept their heads, remained calm and worked some lovely points to retake the lead! At this juncture we were heading into the closing stages of the contest. Hearts throbbed and legs were weary and we hoped that the gods would smile on us! It seemed as if we had jumped Becher’s Brook twice and that the end was in sight but to their credit Legion scored a point in added time to level the match. Comhscór! Final score at end of normal time….AdeS: 3-14; Killarney Legion: 5-8. Am breise! Two 10-minute halves of extra time was announced.
This was another tight affair and, with our wide count starting to add up, we trailed at half-time in extra time by a single point. All we could do at this stage was to encourage our brave boys who wereout on their feet at this stage. We encouraged them to dig deeply for the last 10 minutes. They played their almighty best! They found the energy….somewhere in their Rock spirit! They scored a goal and two points to Legion’s 1 point in the final period of am breise. They took the win! They won the day! Final score…AdeS: 4-17; KL: 5-11. Sea, cúil a bhuann cluichí! A truly great sporting occasion! Well done to every single one of the players who put on the Black‘n’Amber Jersey on Wednesday evening of last week! Boys, you represented our club so very well! Commiserations to Legion! An Charraig Abú! An fhoireann bhuacach: Conor O’Regan; Jamie Ó Cathasaigh (capt), Fionn Cotter, Tadhg Sommers; Oran O’Donoghue, Eoin Mangan, Joe de Barra; David Hobbert, Harry Murphy; Dean Courtney; Michael Cotter, Denis Brassil; Jay Sweeney, Barry Laide, Ryan O’Carroll. Subs: Kyle Yoxall, Seán McCannon, Oisín Cotter, Nathan O’Connor, Nathan Hurley, Eoghan Murphy, Vinny Moriarty, Ewan Canty, Alex Dafoor. A night of celebration will be held for the team in the near future.

Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 6, Round 7 Result
Milltown/Castlemaine ‘B’ 2-11
Castleisland Desmonds ‘B’ 2-08

Venue: Castleisland

Referee: Michael Moriarty (Churchill)

Well done to our Senior ‘B’ side and management who made it three wins on the spin and four wins from six games overall in the Credit Union County Senior Football League, maintaining their unbeaten record away from home with a hard earned victory against Castleisland Desmonds on a beautiful evening for football last Friday.

We trailed 1-6 to 0-8 at half time despite playing well for much of the opening half and creating plenty chances but a lack of killer instinct in front of goal was proving to be our achilles heel as we retired for the interval with it all to play for. First half scorers included Donal Kelliher, Jamie O’Shea, Kieran McKenna, Jeremiah Hayes, Martin Foley, Adam Lenihan (2) and Patrick O’Sullivan.

In the second half we suffered the worst possible start when Castleisland Desmonds rattled the back of the net to push their lead out to four points early doors but gradually we battled our way back into proceedings and goals from Kieran McKenna and Donal Kelliher aligned with some important points as the half wore on from Dylan O’Neil and the aforementioned Kelliher seen us over the winning line with three points to spare. Castleisland Desmonds tried hard to get something from the contest but only managed to add two second half points as the defence tightened up and a good save from a goalscoring opportunity late on  ensured we would emerge victorious.

Mighty stuff lads, keep up the good work!

No Rose Ball And Festival Won’t Be Organising Street Entertainment This August

THE Rose of Tralee International Festival will not be organising a Rose Ball or financing street entertainment for the festival this year.

In a statement issued this morning on their website, the Festival’s Executive Chairman, Anthony O’Gara, did confirm that the Rose of Tralee selections will be broadcast live from MTU’s Kerry Sports Academy again in August.

The reason cited for discontinuing support for street entertainment is due to rising running costs and financial support not increasing over the past decade.

.

While the Rose Ball will not take place, there will be what is described as “a new, more affordable and accessible community event, providing local people with an opportunity to meet and to celebrate with the Roses, their families and supporters.”

The move to a new intimate gala event is planned for the Sunday afternoon of the festival.

The statement says the Rose of Tralee International Festival have been in discussion with local partners over the past six months to advise them that responsibility for the delivery of future festivals needed to be rebalanced and placed on a broader local platform.

“The festival has now decided to pass the organisation of the street’s events back to Tralee town, with a commitment to provide any support and advice required to allow a smooth transition. The cost of running the Festival has been increasing exponentially but financial support has not increased over the past ten years,” reads the statement.

“This move provides an opportunity to enhance and develop the streets festival which can best be activated through community ownership. This repositioning should facilitate better corporate and local support and strengthen the event’s capacity to gain a fairer share of tourism and arts grants.”

Anthony O’Gara, executive chairman, has said that the festival team remain passionate about the event, its proud history and heritage.

He said he looks forward to focusing on core responsibilities, including centres development, hospitality for Roses, Centres, and families, community events rollout, the RTÉ live broadcast and the promotion of Tralee and of County Kerry.

He said he is confident that Tralee people will rise to the challenge provided by this opportunity, and that their involvement will enhance the festival.

SIX teams competed in a special soccer blitz at the St Brendan’s Park FC pitches on Saturday with all proceeds raised going to the Adapt Kerry Women’s Refuge Centre.

Ladies representing five clubs — Park FC (two teams), Dingle Bay Rovers, LB Rovers, Mastergeeha and Ennis — took to pitches at Christy Leahy Park.

It was organised by the Park FC Women’s Social Soccer group which was formed last year, as member Karen Griffin explained.

“Kerry Sports and Recreation Partnership held a six week soccer training course for women in February of 2022 and again in Tralee in May last year.”

“We enjoyed it so much that we decided to form the club, so I approached Park FC and they couldn’t have been more welcoming. We go out once a month and we arrange games with other teams around the county,” added Karen.

It was the Mastergeeha FC ladies who won out the tournament where there was a great atmosphere and LB Rovers’ Megan O’Connor won Most Valuable Player on the day while valuable funds were raised for a great cause. Scroll down for photos…

Senior Men Development League.

Our senior development team played An Daingean on Saturday evening the 27th in the next round of the Credit Union Kerry County Development League, under the glorious sunshine to a home crowd. It was a very high scoring game which saw our Seniors come out victors with the final score of John Mitchels 6-17 An Daingean 4-06. Well done to all players coaches and mentors. Fantastic effort by all.

Senior Ladies new jerseys kindly sponsored by Foleys Spar many thanks for continued support.

Senior Ladies

Donal Curtin Cup Round 4.

John Mitchels  0-08  Annascaul/Castlegregory  1-11.

John Mitchels continued their Donal Curtin Cup campaign with a home defeat in a very competitive encounter to Annascaul Castlegregory last Sunday Eabha Lyne opened the scoring with a point for the visitors before Rachel Kilgallen levelled matters from a free after 8 minutes. Rachel added a second free two minutes later to put John Mitchels in front.

Lauren Goodwin was then adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area and picked herself up to blast the resultant penalty past Kayleigh Collins in the John Mitchels goal.  Finola Casey then pushed the visitors further ahead with a well taken point from play before Rachel Kilgallen added her third pointed free just before half time to leave the half time score John Mitchels 0-03 Annascaul/Castlegregory 1-02.

Two early points from Finola Casey and one from Eabha Lyne pushed the visitors 5 clear before a Rachel Kilgallen free and a point from play by Lily Parker reduced the arrears to a goal.

Two points from Eabha Lyne, one from a free and a point each from Siobhan Goodwin and Orlagh Clifford eased Annascaul/Castlegregory into a 7-point lead but John Mitchels stuck to their task and 2 further pointed frees from Rachel Kilgallen and an Ava Buckley point from play reduced the lead to 4 points with 5 minutes remaining.

The visitors weren’t to be denied, however, and points from Brenna O’Neill and the impressive Finola Casey saw Annascaul/Castlegregory run out winners by 1-11 to 0-8.Despite the defeat this was a very encouraging display by the John Mitchels Ladies.  Apart from anything else, it is very encouraging that we had 20 players available for the game.

As well as all the players mentioned above, Tanya O Connor was very dominant in the art of blocking while Lorna Moriarty on her return to action can be very happy with her performance.  Julie Foley, Shannon Martin, Ashleigh Murphy and Aoife O’Brien were their usual dependable selves in defence.

Sarah Kilgallen and Simi Ogungsbesan more than shared parity in the midfield battle while in attack, Diana O Keeffe, Grace Hamilton and Emelia Brusnik won a lot of primary possession and always looked a threat.  Clara O Dowd, Ellen O’Brien and Ellie O’Rahilly all made telling impacts from the bench.

Training continues on Thursday night at 7.15 as we prepare to continue the remainder of our Donal Curtin Cup games, the County League and of course the County Championship.   As always, all new players are more than welcome to join the club, to have some fun, make new friends and who knows improve their mental and physical fitness and the skills of the game. The senior ladies would like to thank Foleys Spar who sponsored their new jerseys.

Training continues every Wednesday 7-8 & Sundays 12-1 , newcomers always welcome.

Under 14 Girls

A quiet week this week for John Mitchels u14 girls after the excitement of 2 County finals the previous weekend.

It is fair to say that the club and player, coaches and parents got a huge boost after winning both games. In particular the second game was a tense affair, going to extra time and credit must go to both our opponents, Dr Crokes and St Pats for two well contested games on the day.

After the finals, the player, parents and coaches ducked out of the rain and went upstairs to the meeting room for presentation of medals to the Green and Gold teams.

Great credit is due to the parents who helped out with the food, and preparations, and particularly to James O’Dowd for sponsoring pizzas for the teams after the game. It was a lovely finish to a terrific day.

The players got a well-deserved break during the week, but the Green team were on call again on Thursday when they hosted Castleisland Desmonds in a challenge game.

It was a tough task against a very strong team, but our girls gave a good account of themselves and the lessons learned will surely stand to the team during the season. Many thanks to Desmonds for travelling and to George O’Donnell for refereeing the game.

Under 16 girls

The Girls had a great turnout Monday evening for training which allowed for plenty of skill-based drills throughout the training session. Training Monday from 7-8 new comers welcome.

We are so grateful to Manor West Hotel for sponsoring the U16’s John Mitchels Girls jerseys. Included is Colin Boyle & Duty Manager Sarah Carey.

U9 BOYS WHO PLAYED NA GAEIL IN GO GAMES ON SUNDAY MORNING.

Under 9 boys

John Mitchels & @nagaeilgaa U9 Boys played some fantastic football on Sunday Morning last in John Mitchels. Both sides had a great turnout which meant more team’s & most importantly every player getting involved & getting plenty of ball!!

Our thanks to @nagaeilgaa for being well organized & their teams playing great football & we look forward to a return visit in the near future.

John Mitchels U9 Boys training continues every Sunday Morning from 10.15am All Newcomers Welcome.

Under 11 boys

Our U11 Boys had the first game of Phase 2 of our County Go Games last Thursday. We played Laune Rangers at home under the glorious sunshine and what an evening of football we got. Our lads worked especially hard and supported their teammates with some hard running off the ball. We have worked hard on the core skills of the game and it really showed tonight as we passed the ball when it should have been passed and we took some fantastic scores. We would like to thank Laune Rangers for a very sporting game.

Under 13 Boys

The U13a had a busy week with 4 games between both teams.

The Gold team lost in Division 9 on Wednesday evening to a much-improved Stacks team, from the one we faced earlier in the season, the Green team played afterwards and ran out comprehensive winners against Stacks, this secured a County semifinal with a game to spare, our semifinal opponents are still unknown at the time of writing,

The boys  played the final group game on Friday night against Legion, with the result set to determine first and second in our group, although the result wouldn’t matter to progression it would determine if we meet the form team in the other group.

The boys kicked some great scores,  lin the first half and we came in with a 12-point lead at the break, Legion turned it on in the second half and narrowed the margin to 2, the defence came alive and shut up shop and the forwards sprung to life again pushing the margin out to 6 before the final whistle.

Our Gold team went out on Sunday evening on a lovely pitch in Legion played in glorious weather, we were able to call on some of our U11 boys to bolster the squad knowing a win would send the boys into a county semifinal in division 9 which is the highest league they could enter.

The game was very even up to half time, with the scores 1:6 apiece going into the break. Legion pulled away in the second half and we had no answer, we battled hard to the end but just couldn’t close the gap. Final score 3:16 to 1:13 defeat.

Under 15 Boys

An all round sportsman and footballer ,he will be sadly missed by all of those that had the privilege of playing with him. As a mark of respect to the late Noel ,the club flag was at half mast and a minute’s silence was observed, before our Co. League game v Gneeveguilla last weekend..

Juveniles:

Another busy morning in Ballyrickard for our Juvenile Academy on Sunday morning. Great to see so many children out on our pitches. A massive thank you to our Juvenile Committee for generously providing ice-cream treats for the boys and girls after the session. A well deserved treat after all their hard work.

U5 Boys

These boys are showing great improvement each week and are putting in huge effort at each training session with their fantastic coaches who couldn’t be prouder of them. Keep up the good work boys and don’t forget to practice as much as ye can during the week.

U6 Girls:

The coaches had a fantastic morning with these girls. They combined with the boys and focused on skills. Hand passing, catching and movement. It was Georgia’s birthday and everyone enjoyed some delicious cake followed by ice cream. Well done to all the girls

U7 Boys:

Fantastic numbers in attendance Sunday morning. The boys skills set is coming along nicely and they are all showing great team work throughout. The boys focused on positions on the pitch, kicking and hand passing the ball working it up and down the field. Keep up the good work and practice as much as you can during h the week.

U8 Girls:

After two weeks of games the girls were back in Ballyrickard for some fun training. There was a massive improvement in all players noted by the coaches. Loads of the girls had a shot on goal or over the bar and it was great to see them all trying during the game.

Aoife and Carragh stood out for committing themselves to the ball and getting stuck in. Overall there was huge progress since we played the games and we can see how the girls must be practising at home.

U9 Boys:

This week’s U9 Boys academy session was a lively affair. We focused on developing fundamental movements, relays, basic skills, and team play. Special shoutout to our superstars Hugh and Coach Ray, who showed us how it’s done by winning the top-bins challenge! Keep up the practice at home and you are making tremendous progress!

U10 Girls:

The girls were delighted to hear from their coaches how well they played at their games the past two weeks. They concentrated on kick passing and hand passing the ball while on the move during a game at the end of the session they put these into practice.

The coaches can see a huge improvement in each girl and are delighted with the girls. Keep up the good work more games to follow.

U11 Boys

Our U11 Boys had a busy week; they travelled to Listowel on Thursday evening for the County League. Well done to all on a fantastic performance. They put in a great training session on Sunday morning with drills and a game against each other at the end of the session. The boys will play Ballymac at home this Thursday. We hope to see full attendance on the night.

U13 Boys:

Honours even at Healy Park 2-10 to 3-7 in a game of 2 extremely different halfs on Sunday, KOR led by 7 at half time but with the wind in their sails in the 2nd half Currow put on the pressure and clocked up some good scores none more important than a goal in the last kick of the game to even the score.

The boys in blue showed glimpses of brilliance but a little lack of consistency in the 2nd half caught up with us, all in all the draw was a fair result on the day.

Well done all we keep learning and improving and we look forward to the next game. U13 Coaches.

Fixtures:

U11 Boys v Ballymac Thursday 1st June in Ballyrickard

U13 Boys B v St. Pats Monday 29th May in Blennerville at 7.30pm

Central Region final:

Kerins O Rahillys/St. Pats Minors v Sneem/Derrynane/Templenoe/Tuosist Monday 29th May at 7pm in Dr Crokes pitch

NÓTAÍ NA mBAN

‘Silence is Golden’ or should be on and off the pitch!

With the longer evenings, all pitches are being utilised throughout the week. It’s fantastic to see so many girls and boys having great fun in Pat Healy Park, Ballyrickard.

Going to watch a match is brilliant, win, lose  or draw… supporting our teams is what matters .   It’s good to be competitive but in a nice way. The behaviour of supporters and coaches can sometimes rub off on the players , that’s a good thing once there’s no negativity.

We all need  to control our emotions. If you have nothing positive to say then say nothing at all. This also applies to our players.

Players, coaches and supporters , please allow everyone to have the benefit of  the enjoyment and freedom of football. It’s long enough that we were all locked away.

“Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad.”

U12 Girls

Fun in the sun… well done to our U12s who enjoyed training last Saturday in sunny Pat Healy Park, Ballyrickard. The going was heavy with the sun beating down but a Calippo afterwards made the hard work all worthwhile.

We still have some cobwebs to be shaken off so hoping for a full turnout at training next week. Remember practice, practice, practice builds progression steadily.

We are hoping to have a challenge match during the week. More details to follow once confirmed.

Welcome to Lily and Leyia. We hope that you will have plenty of fun and make many lifelong friends here with us.

And the good news is that the Co. league will be commencing in June.

CUMANN NA mBUNSCOL

What an evening it was in Austin Stack Park last Tuesday evening for the Cumann Na mBunscol division 1 final.

Scoil Eoin’s football stars shone against Kenmare’s team . Congrats to the team, their manager Robert Kennedy and our Strand Road ladies and Allie Kerins  who was joint captain.

U14 GIRLS

Training continues twice weekly in preparation for the Co. league which will be starting over the next few weeks.

FÉILE 2023

Preparations are underway in preparation for this wonderful day out on Saturday, July 1st. The excitement is building!

U16 GIRLS

Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursday at the usual time of 7p.m.

This team will have no competitive action in the Co. League until after the Junior Cert.

MINORS

Looking forward to seeing some brilliant displays of football from our minor ladies in the next round of the Co. league when Rathmore will play host on Monday, May 29th.

We have a back game to play v Kilcummin over the next few weeks.

PDP

This year’s U17 player development programme is for girls born in 2006 and 2007.

Messages have been sent into the relevant groups.

EXAM TIME

Don’t stress, do your best as you prepare for your Junior and Leaving Cert. Also for everyone who is doing their summer exams this week give them your best shot and remember that you have a fine long summer ahead of you.

Best of luck to you in your upcoming exams.

SENIORS

Well done to our senior ladies who hosted Ballyduff in round 5 of the Donal Curtin Cup. Our team, which featured a number of ladies emerging from the minor ranks, were focused to dig deep to register another win in this competition.

The Ballyduff ladies failed to settle and Strand Road seized upon their early momentum to move into a commanding lead in the first half.

It was Ballyduff who needed a quick start to the second half but our ladies continued to power on as they did from the throw in. As a team we put together some good moves that yielded some fine scores. Our ladies put in a great performance yet again and came away with the spoils.

Best wishes to Ballyduff who are starting out in their senior football venture. In fairness to the opposition they never threw the towel in and gave it everything but we were the stronger team on the day.

We still have a back game to play v Currow before the next round.

Round 6 of this competition will be on July 17th ( TBC) when we will host Laune Rangers.

The Co. league is starting in June.

CONDOLENCES

Our condolences to the families and friends of Shane Scannell and Jerome Bourke . May their souls rest in peace.

Tralee Parnells U11 that played Crotta in Caherslee last Saturday

U11 Hurling
Our U11s played Crotta in a very competitive game in Caherslee on Saturday evening in glorious sunshine. This was a great performance by this group of players with the Parnells lads preventing Crotta having vital scores, with great blocks and defending. There is a huge improvement to be seen all the time and the team should be very proud of their performance.

Senior Hurling

Tralee Parnells 2-14 Causeway 3-14

Our Senior team played their last County League game in Caherslee on Wednesday evening knowing a draw or win would see them through to the semi-finals. A loss and it would come down to score difference.

As it happened though the result on the night was disappointing, scoring prowess in previous matches ensured that Parnells are through to their first ever County League semi-final.

The team welcomed back all their Kerry panelists – Tadhg Brick (0-2), Brian Lonergan (0-4), Luke Barrett and Morgan Madden (0-1)- and while it was great to see them back in the Parnells jersey, their was a lack of sharpness in the team as a whole. Causeway were more clinical and took their goal chances well, though Parnells won’t be pleased with the ease in which they were allowed to score.

On the plus side, Parnells had 9 different scorers, with subs Pip and recently recruited player, Sean Woulfe, getting the goals. The lads can now look forward to the semi-final next Wednesday with the opposition to be determined on Monday night following a back game on the other side of the league.

Junior Hurling

Tralee Parnells B 2-8 St Brendans C 3-15

Our Junior team played the final round of the County League in Ardfert last Friday evening. This certainly was a game of two halves with St Brendans building up a big half-time lead, but with Parnells coming back into the game in the second half with goals from Shane O’Neill and Sean Woulfe. Unfortunately, they had left themselves too much of a hill to climb and St Brendans closed out the game with a goal with the last puck of the game.

Tralee Parnells Golf Classic

In 2022, Tralee Parnells was granted a 13 year licence for the use of the GAA pitch at the Tralee Sports Complex in Oakpark for our Academy players – “Pairc na Darach”.

In order to upgrade the pitch at Pairc na Darach to make it suitable for playing hurling and camogie, we need to invest a substantial amount of money – already the club has invested in ball-stops, nets, landscaping and sanding.

Further funding is required to complete the work so our young hurlers and camogie players can display their skills on a top quality playing surface in a safe environment. To this end, the club is running our inaugural Golf Classic in Beaufort Golf Club on Friday July 21st next.

Teams of 4 are €200. There are also other sponsorship opportunities – Sponsor a Tee/Green: €50. Sponsor a Hole: €100. Please contact Agnes at 087-8377969 or any member of the Committee for further information.

On the 6th minute of time Adam Hegarty rattled the back of the net to begin our scoring. Two quick points from the opposition and we were a draw, Tommy Lynch took his shot and over the bar it sailed to add another point.

With point for point scoring Annascaul got a point with which Martin Lurcher got his first point to bring us within a point. St Pats took their opportunity to pull ahead with four scores unanswered, With a point each from Adam Hegarty and Conor Enright.

With the clock showing the 26th minute, Brian Murphy heading towards the opposition’s goals he kicked the ball hoping for a point which landed in the top right-hand corner of the net.

Joe O’Connor added one more point till Annascaul decided it was their turn to score with three points came quickly before the whistle blew to signal half time. St Pats B 2-05 Annascaul B 1-06

In the second half Annascaul opened with four scores three points and a goal, Brian Murphy put the ball over the bar to add another point for us. Again, the opposition added a point with Brian Murphy putting another point on the board.

With Annascaul getting another point, Paudi Bailey kicked the ball over the bar, this was our last score of the game. With two quick goals and two more points scored by Annascaul, it seemed this match wasn’t going to end in our favour. The final whistle blew St Pat’s B 2-08 Annascaul B 5-13

Senior Ladies
Donal Curtin Round 4 Monday 22nd May 2023

Ballymac 1-09    Legion 1-07

A really hard-fought encounter in Killarney where strong defending and robust tackling was very much to the fore. In a game where scores were at a premium we started well and had a goal from Jill Quirke and a pointed free from Roisin Rahilly. Legion fought back and scored 1-02.

A Roisin point from play left the half time score 1-02 apiece. Management made some positional switches at the break which helped the team balance for the second half.

We again started the second half well and two Ella Quirke points followed by one from Eve Creedon. However, credit to fought back with two of their own. It was nip and tuck from there on with our defence playing really well when asked the hard questions. Kerry also had a super save to keep us ahead.

Heroic defence from Niamh Rahilly, Anna Collins, Ciara Kerins and Rachel Griffin kept us ahead. An amazing energetic performance from Keelin Enright from midfield where she covered every blade of grass took a lot of pressure off our defence also.

We finished the game well with points from Ella, Lisa Curran, Roisin and Jill left the score 1-09 to 1-07 at the final whistle.

Overall, a hard-fought victory on a night when we were missing a number of players. Massive credit to the 16 who togged out and especially Kate O Connor who was under the weather but came to ensure we had an option from the bench.

TEAM: Kerry Hennessy, Anna Collins, Niamh Rahilly, Laura Kelly, Ciara Kerins, Una Kerins, Rachel Griffin, Keelin Enright, Ellie McElligott, Caoimhe Carroll, Roisin Rahilly (0-03), Lisa Curran (0-01), Ella Quirke (0-03), Eve Creedon (0-01), Jill Quirke (1-01)

Minor Boys

Ballymac GAA -v- Austin Stacks Minor Central Region – Final – Div 2

Ballymacelligott GAA   2-07 (13)     Austin Stacks 0-12

Our Minor team played in the final of the Central Region Division 2 competition in glorious early summer conditions in Strand Road on Monday Evening, May 22nd.

In the first half, it was a nip and tuck affair with Ballymac going into an early 3-point lead with some fine score taking by Micheal Savage. Subsequently, it was Jamie Burke who found the back of the net to help drive us on.

However, it was Austin Stacks who controlled the ball in the latter period of the first half and brought us back level at the interval on a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-6.

The second half started in a similar cagey fashion with both teams testing each other’s defence at various periods. The ever-industrious Jack Joy found the back of the net to help boost our chances.

However, Stacks, nearing the end of the game took the lead for the first time but our fellas never gave up with some fantastic fielding from our captain Cathal White & Eoin Moriarty.

Second Half substitute, Luke Silles, on his return from injury, popped over a bullet of a leveller to ensure all in attendance was in for a grand stand finish.

In as dramatic of a finish to a game as you will see, Jack Joy, got fouled near 45 yards out and placed the ball on the surface and took on the responsibility of taking on the kick which turned out to be the last kick of the game.

With nerves of steel, Jack popped the ball over the black spot ensuring victory in heart stopping fashion. The scenes that followed will live long in the memory for any Ballymac person in attendance.

Congratulations to the boys on an outstanding, hard-fought victory. The club is immensely proud of you and your campaign! Ballymac ABU!!

County League Division 9 Final

Ballymac 4-14     Listowel 4-3

In a free flowing and sporting game of football, Ballymac came out on top in a game that truthfully, we fully deserved to win.

A comfortable half time lead of 2-7 to 1-1, was reflective of the superiority of our lads. However, it must be said that in this half Listowel were a bit wasteful up front and had a lot of wides. Add to this some resolute defending by our boys. Also, and more importantly, our custodian Jack Lynch pulled off 3 tremendous saves. Had these gone in???

The 2nd half saw Ballymac play some fantastic football on both ends of the pitch and our lead was extended.

Listowel to their credit, never gave in and went searching for goals. They eventually breached our cover once…., then again…and then again!!

Game on! 8 points in it…could they get another? No said our boys, we knuckled down, saw out the game, and the refs whistle sounded much to the delight of our boys and supporters.

For the majority of this team, this victory was made all the sweeter, because of all the heartbreaks experienced over the last number of years. A fitting and just reward for this talented bunch.

Thanks to our loyal supporters, to a sporting Listowel team and management and to St Pats for the use of their fine facilities. Thanks also to Billy who reffed the game very well.

Graham West and Kyran Boyle accepted the trophy on behalf of the team.

A number of injuries and school tours meant we only had the bare 1 5.

But it’s quality, not quantity

Team  1. Jack Lynch…solid as a rock. Kept us in it with top class saves and his kick outs were on the money. Most improved player on our squad by far.

2. Kyran Boyle…joint captain, showed tremendous character when faced with injury. A warrior on our team. Played really well.

3. Fionn Enright…so dependable, Fionn puts in near perfect games every time he plays. Is growing in confidence and potential.

4. Gearoid OConnor…had an outstanding game and only u1 3!! Tackled and carried with ease. A good player with a bright future.

5. Daniel Moriarty…quality, energy, skill…his qualities are endless. Another u13 player who had an excellent game.

6. Jackson Brosnan…a candidate for man of the match. Jackson’s ability to read the game is unparalleled. Combine this with his natural strength and skill, and you see why he is so good.

7. Conor McCarthy…another man of the match candidate. Bossed his man from start to finish, carried the ball very well and set up our forwards to score. Chipped in with 2 quality points. Excellent game.

8. Jack Collins…head and shoulders above everybody else, it’s easy to see why he has been recently selected on development squad. Dominated the middle, scored at will and set up his team mates for scores time and again. Finished with an incredible 2-9!

9. Cian Gilroy…played really well in the 1st half, but it was the 2nd half where we saw his true self. 1 of the best readers of the game on our team, his positional sense thwarted many dangerous Listowel attacks. After a tough couple of weeks for Cian and his family, this was thoroughly deserving.

10. Seadhna O’Brien…worked tirelessly on the wing getting up and down the pitch. Seamlessly slotted into the backs when we went down to 14 men, and though he may not have been our top scorer, his high work rate was a huge factor in the winning of the game.

11. Ryan Burke…played a very very smart game. Linked extremely well with his defence and carried the ball with great efficiency and confidence.

12. Graham West…joint captain and 1 of Graham’s best games. Caught, tackled, passed and scored. Kicked 2 good points. Should be very proud of his performance.

13. Shane Cassidy… Shane has developed a habit of getting goals in every match…and tonight was no different!!…. chipping the keeper for a goal in the 2nd half to add to his personal tally.

14. Conor Lynch…another player with a high football IQ, Conor brought all players around him into it with unselfish passing. Got his goal, deservingly so, in 2nd half.

1 5. Tadhg OConnor…another u13 player who did very well for himself. Not fazed by the big pitch or older players, he even chipped in with a point too.

Injured/ unavailable; Darragh McMahon, Liam O’RahiIIy, Cathal Carr, Gearoid Joy, Eric Quirke, Harvey Leen

U13 Boys

Ballymac u13 Blue Team played away to Ballyduff in our 3rd Game of Phase 2 of the County League.

Having won our two previous games, another win would ensure we topped Div 5B and qualified for County Semi-final.

In the first half we played into a strong breeze as well as up an incline. While we dominated possession, we found it hard to get good ball into our full forwards and Ballyduff were defending their goals well.

Ballyduff were linking play well and kicked some nice points from play. A great save from Flynn Boyle kept us in the game as Ballyduff were picking off points from frees and play. Strong performances from Daniel, Harvey and Gearoid Joy amongst others kept the halftime score to 8 pts to 2 pts in Ballyduff’s favour.

From the throw we picked up the intensity well in the second half. We won most of Ballyduff’s kickouts and starting eating into their lead. Points from Adrian, Harvey, Jack and Aidan had us right back in contention.

Another point blank save by Flynn meant the home team only registered one point in the second half as we had the lion’s share of possession. Eric and Patrick were working tirelessly and linking play well.

The key score came with about 5 mins to go when Darragh followed up on a shot by Harvey and buried it to the back of the net. The insurance point came from Jack Hobbart and at the final whistle we had dug out a good result. Final scoreline 1-8 to 9 pts

The boys now await their opponents in league semi-final

IT was a day to remember for all those who turned out for the ‘Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge’ hosted by Spa N.S. on Sunday.

The school organised the hugely popular family fun day in honour of Donal, their past pupil on Sunday May 28.

“We wanted to honour Donal again in a special way and so our amazing committee and loyal volunteers. worked so hard to create an event where people would come together for a few hours, have fun and ‘live life’ just as Donal had urged us all to,” said school principal Peter Linehan.

“Huge credit must go to our Parents Association who have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to ensure that everything would be ready”, added Peter.

This year coincided with the 10th anniversary of Donal’s passing and over five hundred people visited the school which was a hive of activity with a fabulous market organised by the students.

Children from 5th and 6th classes also coordinated fun games and challenges for everyone all day and the large crowd in attendance was enthralled by an exciting rocket competition.

The Parents Association had also organised a beautiful barbeque on site with teas and tasty treats also being served up as well.

The street performer, Tommy Broderick from Your Man’s Puppets made a number of appearances and had everyone in stitches with his puppet show.

However, the main event of the day was the ‘Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge’ a looped run/walk starting and finishing at the school. Donal’s parents Fionbarr and Elma and sister Jema Walsh were on hand to officially start the run/walk.

There was a wonderful atmosphere as young and not so young set off to tackle the course in the beautiful sunshine.

First home in the men’s section was Kerry coach Arthur Fitzgerald with local lads David Chute and Liam O’Donnell a close second and third. Local girl, Evie O’Sullivan scooped first place in the ladies section closely followed by Hannah Redican and Anna Chute.

However, there were huge cheers and rounds of applause for the long line of runners and walkers when they crossed the finish line.

Elma Walsh was thrilled with the event. “We are delighted to be back in Spa N.S. a place where Donal had so many happy days. The committee have again organised a really special day for everyone and Donal would have loved it!” she said. Scroll down for photos…

REPORT: Cork Get The Better Of Kerry In Munster Final

.

Anthony Newman reports on the TG4 Munster Senior Championship Final played on Sunday in Mallow…

Cork 5-14

Kerry 2-17

A four goal first half blitz saw Cork retain their TG4 Munster Senior Championship title at Mallow.

Two green flags from Libby Coppinger, along with efforts from Kaire Quirke and Ciara O’Sullivan, saw Cork in a commanding lead at half time and they needed it all after a brilliant fightback by Kerry in in the second half.

The Kingdom will also rue two missed penalties in the second half which cost them dearly in the end. Doireann O’Sullivan opened the scoring for Cork in the first minute and she added a second from a free a minute later.

Continued below…

.

Kerry had the chance to take the lead when Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh played a superb ball to Hannah O’Donoghue but Meabh O’Sullivan saved superbly to deny her a goal.

Eimear Kiely increased Cork’s lead before they got the first goal of the final. Orlaith Cahalane played in Coppinger to give Ciara Butler no chance of saving. O’Sullivan raised another white flag, before Anna Galvin got Kerry off the mark, to make it 1-4 to 0-1 after seven minutes.

O’Sullivan added another from a free before Cork got their second goal. Cahalane and O’Sullivan were involved again for Coppinger to make it 2-5 to 0-1.

Aishling O’Connell got Kerry’s second point and Niamh Ní Chonchúir added another for them as they started to settle and come more into the game.

Ciara O’Sullivan and Lorraine Scanlon exchanged points to make it 2-6 to 0-4 after 20 minutes. Some last ditch defending by Kerry denied Cork another goal, before Cahalane raised a white flag to extend her side’s lead.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh scored from before Cork scored their third goal of the first half. Katie Quirke picked up the ball and found Ciara O’Sullivan to find the back of the net to see Cork lead 3-8 to 0-6.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Doireann O’Sullivan both raised white flags, but Cork weren’t letting up and just before half-time Quirke got their fourth goal to see the Rebels lead by  4-10 to 0-7 at the break.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh opened the scoring on the re-start before Kerry were awarded a penalty for a tackle on Anna Galvin. But Ní Mhuircheartaigh put it wide, having sent the keeper the wrong way.

Credit to Ní Mhuircheartaigh she didn’t let it upset her as she slotted over the next two points as the Kingdom were now dominating.

They got the goal they deserved in the 39th minute when O’Donoghue scored to make it 1-11 to 4-10.

Cork got a much-needed score when a long ball in was caught by Cahalane and she raised her side’s fifth green flag to increase their lead to 5-10 to 1-13.

With 51 minutes gone Kerry were awarded another penalty, for a tackle on O’Leary but O’Sullivan denied Ní Mhuircheartaigh with a superb save.

Fiadhna Tagney got a late goal for Kerry but by then the game was beyond them as Cork ran out deserving winners by 5-14 to 2-16.
