Austin Stacks GAA Club News

.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Milltown/Castlemaine 1-13; Austin Stacks 1-11

A great start saw us with a 0-3 lead after 5 minutes with two pointed frees from Sean Quilter and Mike O’Donnell and a long-range point from play by Donagh Mc Kivergan before Milltown Castlemaine opened their scoring.

The home side settled well and had drawn level 0-3 to 0-3 with 11 mins played on the clock.  Cillian Litchfield scored an excellent point from play before Milltown levelled the game again in the 17th minute.

Two more points, another long-range effort by Donagh Mc Kivergan and a free by Michael O Donnell had put 2 between the sides again with 21 minutes played.  Again, the home side replied with 2 points to tie the sides 0-6 a piece with five minutes remaining in the first half.

Armin Heinrich scored an excellent individual point to put us into the lead once more but again Milltown replied swiftly with 2 points of their own to leave the half time score Austin Stacks 0-7 Milltown Castlemaine 0-8.

Half time substitution:  Conor Myers was replaced by Jack Morgan.

Sean Quilter had us back level 0-8 a piece within the 1st minute of the 2nd half.  Ferdia O’Brien was introduced for Donagh Mc Kivergan in the fifth minute, great to see Ferdia back!

Milltown had restored their one-point advantage before they scored a well worked goal in the 7th minute.  After Milltown Castlemaine had scored 2 more points, it looked like the home side were going to run out comfortable winners as they lead by 1-11 to 0-8 with 20 minutes remaining on the clock.  Brendan O’Sullivan replaced Sean Quilter in the Stacks forward line and his presence around the box instantly made an impact .

Stacks, Jack Murphy made a fantastic run out of defence and found himself in a crowded Milltown Castlemaine square, the youngster won a high dropping ball to the left of the goal mouth, and somehow found the space to score a fantastic goal from a most difficult angle and suddenly Stacks were back in it with 15 minutes remaining.  ‘Calla’ scored a lovely point to bring it back to 2 between the sides.

Stacks will rue some missed opportunities in the next few minutes and it was Milltown who scored next to restore their 3-point advantage in the 24th minute.  Donagh Mc Kivergan replaced Eoghan Carroll before he pointed a free to leave 2 between the sides in the 30th minute, and now it was all about working that goal chance as the game went into injury time.

Milltown turned over a Stacks attack and sensibly pointed again to put 3 between the sides before Michael O’Donnell pointed a close range free to put 2 between the sides once more and leave both sets of spectators on the edge of their seats for the remaining minutes.

Alas, it was not to be and it was the cheers of the home side team and supporters that greeted referee Seamus Mulvihill’s full time whistle.  FT Austin Stacks 1-11 (14) Milltown Castlemaine 1-13 (16).

Team:  Ml Tansley, Niall Fitzmaurice, Joey Nagle, Jack Murphy (1-0), Paul O’Sullivan, Armin Heinrich (0-1), Eoghan Carroll, Greg Horan, Michael O’Donnell (0-3 frees), Donagh Mc Kivergan (0-3 (1 free) Fiachna Mangan, Cillian Litchfield (0-1), Conor Myers, Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-1), Sean Quilter (0-2 frees).

Subs used:   Jack Morgan for Conor Myers (HT) , Brendan O’Sullivan for Sean Quilter,  Ferdia O’Brien for Donagh Mc Kivergan.  Donagh on again to replace Eoghan Carroll.

We now have just two more round to play, at home to Kilcummin (w/e 25th June) and away to Gneeveguilla (w/e 9th July), games which we have to win to keep our hopes alive to remain in Division 1 for the coming season.

Our thanks to Elma & Ciara Nix for this excellent report.

At the moment our R10 Co. League game, at home to Kilcummin, has been fixed for next Sunday week (25th June) at 2pm.

B FOOTBALL: Gneeveguilla 4-10 (22); Austin Stacks 3-12 (21).

We were coasting to victory in this Co. Shield game in Gneeveguilla on this Sunday afternoon (11th June) as the closing five minutes approached with a commanding lead of eight points.

But a combination of some complacency on our part and a never-say-die effort by the home side saw them score three unanswered goals in those five minutes to leave them with a one point win at the end.

Up to then we had played some very good football both individually and as a team. When Pa McCarthy opened the scoring with a point after 40 seconds we were never behind after that. We led by 1-4 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter – our goal coming from Damien Hogan. At half time we led by 2-8 to 0-5 – our second goal coming from Donnacha Sayers in the 23rdminute.

At the end of the third quarter we were still those two goals in the lead (2-11 to 1-8) and had increased that lead by eight points during the next ten minutes (our third goal scored by Joe Looby). And then came those disastrous five closing minutes.

Team: Brian Horgan (0-1 – forty five), Ruairí O’Connell, John Murphy (Capt), Seán Moynihan, Pa McCarthy (0-1), Luke Chester (0-1), Evan Foley, Joe Reidy, Ciarán O’Connell, Noah Townsend (0-2), Gearóid Sheehan, David Courtney (0-1), Donnacha Sayers (1-3 – one free), Calvin Foley (0-1), Damien Hogan (1-2 – one free),

Sub used:  Joe Looby 49m) (1-0).

With four rounds played in this Div 5 Phase 2 Shield we have two wins (against Ballylongford and Rathmore) and two games lost (against Duagh and Gneeveguilla) which has us third on the Table. We are now due to play our 5th and final round game at home to Glenflesk on the same date and time as our SF game (Sunday, 25th June at 2pm).

THE C TEAM: Our C Team have one  more round to play in this season’s Co. League against  Laune Rangers and it goes ahead in Connolly Park on the coming Saturday (17th June) at 7pm. To date in this four round League we have lost two games against Fossa and Rathmore and received a walk-over from Kerins O’Rahillys in round 3.

THE D TEAM: Our D team have still just one game played in this five round competition to date (a brilliant win against Scartaglin by 5-14 to 1-1 in round 2) Our 5th and final round game is away to Clounmacon on this coming Saturday evening (17th June) at 7pm. No details have yet come to hand about our postponed games against Duagh and Beaufort.

CLUB CARDS: Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Mondays and Thursdays with the starting time of 9pm sharp.

THE talents of local students have gone on display at Kerry County Museum which hosts a Junk Kouture exhibition for the next two weeks.

Students from five Kerry schools – Mercy Mounthawk, Presentation Tralee, Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra and Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne — designed and upcycled fashions from recycled material for the annual competition earlier this year and their work has gone on display at the Museum until Saturday, June 24.

The exhibition was launched on Saturday as part of the Cruinniú na nÓg festival. Teachers from Mercy Mounthawk, Mairead Ryan and Stacey O’Leary co-ordinated the event, which was attended by students and their families.

CAUSEWAY was bustling with activity recently when the Kerry Holstein Friesian Breeders Club hosted the IHFA Judges Conference at Barron’s Agri Trading.

In addition to an already busy schedule, the Kerry Club launched their herds competition at the event, alongside herds competition sponsor Dairymaster.

Speaking at the launch, CEO John Harty said; “We are privileged to sponsor and support the Kerry herds competition again this year. I admire their work ethic and wanting to try new things, being the first club to host the judges conference is testament to their commitment, they must be commended.”

The herds competition aims to promote good production and conformation in Holstein Friesian herds.

• Highest herd percentage protein
• Lifetime production cow
• Highest conformation herd & production herd

• Best overall heifer, junior cow and senior cow

• A Pure Friesian Class

“I would like to thank Dairymaster for the work and dedication they have given to the club,” said Leo O’Connor Chairman of the Kerry Holstein Friesian Breeders Club.

“They are always very supportive, even providing a mobile milking unit for the judges conference which is much appreciated. The herd’s competition has grown significantly over the last few years and this year we are taking it a step further with the introduction of an international judge. This will bring a new and different perspective to the competition, and we are really looking forward to it.”

This year for the first time, Mick Gould of the worldwide recognised Woodmarsh Herd from Shropshire in the UK will judge the senior, intermediate and junior section, while Sylvia Helen, Eedy Herd will judge the novice section, new entrants and Friesian section.

The competition is open to pedigree herds and all entries are to be sent to Geraldine Harty, Herds Competition Coordinator, Ballylongane, Ballyheigue.

Judging will commence on the 3rd of July for Mick Gould and at an earlier June date for Sylvia Helen, with the awards ceremony held on Thursday 6th July at Hughes Bar, Cordal.

The clubs field evening/stock judging will take place at Sean Begley’s farm Slievrue Herd, Gurrane, Dingle on Sunday afternoon 25th of June.

Senior Men

Mitchels 3-10

Churchill 0-11

Scorers:

Shane Connor 1-1

James Duggan 0-4 (1F)

Wayne Conway 0-2

Cian Holden 1-1

Alan Donohue 0-2 (2F)

Peter Murphy 1-0

Great to see an attacking display today! Our forwards moved brilliantly, opening holes in the Churchill defence which created a lot of scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Work rate was excellent epitomized as Peter Murphy went sprinting to the corner, after a lost cause pass, and coming out with ball in hand to set up another attack.

Shane O Connors goal was well taken after a brilliant move down the right flank creating the opening for Shane to finish well after 12 minutes.

Pat Kearney carried a lot of ball and was a nuisance for the Churchill defense when running from deep and creating overlaps and distributing the ball well.

Some good ball into our corner forwards Alan and James, made sure we kept Churchill on their toes and with the runners coming through we tormented their defense time and time which lead to our second goal, Peter murphy with a great run through the middle, caught a hand pass and brilliantly finished to the top corner without breaking stride. Half Time 2-6 to 0-6.

The second half was predictable with Churchill wanting to start strong and they did going straight through from the thrown in and popping over a point after a foul on the edge of the square.

This should have made us wary but it didn’t stop there as they went through the middle again and we conceded a penalty. Churchills Joe Lenihan , who impressed for them, stood over the ball, however keeper Peter Nammock dived to the right and clutched the ball in his arms and hand passed out of defense to safety, straight away we attacked and scored from this .. the fine margins !!

Cian Holden was as industrious as ever constantly probing the Churchill defense and was a constant thorn but he got his just rewards kicking 1-1 in particular a well taken daisy cutter to the net being the highlight of his day.

A first County League start for young Brian o Donnell at corner back meant we had plenty of youth in defence but he was sturdy whilst also offering an outlet at kick out time.

John Carmody came on and added some pace to our attack and Wayne Conway showing signs that the old dog still has a few tricks with a brilliant outside of the boot point in the first half and a defensive interception late in the second half to frustrate Churchill once again.

Conor Hurley was immense today. He defended ferociously and assisted our attack at every opportunity, making important tackling contributions around the D and close to goal. His work rate was exceptional today and helped create the platform for the win.

Another valuable two points in the push for Div 2. Well done management and squad

Under 11 boys

This week we travelled to Killarney Legion for our most recent County Go Game. Another fabulous night for football and we had a storming first half with plenty of scores. There was a lot of miles in the legs with a lot of our boys involved in a lot of sports this week so the energy dipped in the second half and Legion took over the game in the third quarter.

But credit to our lads who never gave up and put in a fine display in the last 10 minutes. Thanks to Legion for a very sporting game. Next up for us is Austin Stacks next Thursday at home.

Under 13 Gold team.

Our U13 Gold team played in the semifinal of the Championship on Wednesday evening in the summer sun, Firies were our opponents and both teams battled hard for the early dominance. We went in a point down at the first half water break and the boys came out fired up for the second quarter taking some lovely scores with a great team goal.

We went in all square at half time on a scoreline of 1:05 apiece, the heat didn’t slow us down and we turned up the temperature ourselves.
The second half saw our bench bring fresh legs and energy to the occasion, helping us get in front. Our U11’s did themselves proud with great performances from all, our more experienced boys kicked some scores and defended bravely seeing us home with a 2-point win and on to a county final.
Final scoreline of 1:11 to 1:09

Higgins Waste is the new sponsor of the men’s senior team.

Seniors:

Relief was the overriding emotion at the finish where we gained two valuable league points when defeating Spa in Strand Road on a final scoreline of 0-12 to 0-08.

It was clear from the beginning that scores were going to be at a premium due to the  defensive set up of the visitors who were facing into  the breeze, and though we scored the first 6 points without reply the game soon became a scrap and an arm wrestle that we did well to see out to the finish.

Tom Hoare operating at wing forward had us ahead early on from a free and this was followed by a lovely point from a mark by Tommy who gained clean possession  following good work from half back Ben Hanafin.

We quickly added two further points from Tom Hoare and Ben from play with Tommy again accurate from another mark before Darrragh O’Connor cut through and lobbed a lovely score to make it 0-06 to nil.

Spa did not register their first score until the 21st minute, a free by Evan Cronin and they followed this with further points from placed balls via Michael Foley who lined out at centre field.

Darragh soon added a further point from play and Ben again was on the mark to get our 8th point as we approached half time – this was after a prolonged period of keep ball which though frustrating to watch, saw the lads being ultra patient before pouncing on an opening to point.

The main feature of our play in the first half was our defending with each of the six backs putting themselves about and conceding very little room to the Spa forwards – in fact, Spa had only a couple of efforts on goal in the opening 30 mins which saw them fail to score from play.

Half time was 0-08 to 0-04 in our favour.

Tom Hoare from a free and Evan Cronin from play exchanged points before Spa’s Cian Tobin received a black card when pulling down Conor Hayes off the ball – the numerical advantage saw us with more chances but these were spurned when Diarmuid’s free came back off the post and in the best move of the game, Shane McElligott pulled his shot wide of the posts when a goal seemed likely.

Spa were now more adventurous and had the deficit cut to 3 points 0-9 to 0-6 before Diarmuid pointed a long range free but this was negated almost immediately when Spa again scored from a free.

Exchanges were now tense as both sides sought to impose their will and we were able to breathe a sigh of relief when Daniel Bowler, on for BJ, found his range with a good score to leave us 4 to the good – Spa replied deep into injury time,  but we had the final say in the 36th minute when Gazza was first to react to a ball breaking off the post to point over his right shoulder.

The referee’s final whistle brought proceedings to a close and saw us move closer to safety following losses by Dingle and Austin Stacks and Gneeveguilla’s draw with Legion.

We will have to travel in two weeks time for our penultimate game when taking on Dingle.

Scorers: Tom Hoare ( 0-03, 2fs), Tommy Walsh ( 0-02, 2mks), Ben Hanafin ( 0-02), Darragh O’Connor ( 0-02), Diarmuid 0-01,f), Daniel Bowler ( 0-01), Gazza ( 0-01).

Team: Rob O’Connor, Jake Foley, Ross O’Callaghan, Darragh McElligott, Shane McElligott, Con Barrett, Ben Hanafin, David Moran ( C), Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Gearóid Dillane, Conor Hayes, Tom Hoare, Darragh O’Connor, Tommy Walsh, Barry John Keane.

Subs used: Shane Brosnan, Seán Walsh, Gazza, Daniel Bowler, Paudie Griffin.

Div 6A:

A solid workmanlike performance saw us take the points from the home side in a game played last Thursday night 8th June.

Churchill opened the scoring with an early point but Keelan Crowe had us ahead almost immediately when he outfielded his opponent and stuck the ball in the back of the net for a great goal.

Daniel Bowler from a free and Fenton Collins from play increased our lead before Keelan repeated his earlier heroics, again finding the net after another fine fetch leaving the half time score 2-03 to 1-03 in our favour.

The 2nd half saw Churchill come more into the game and the sides were level, 2-04 to 1-07 after 10 mins, our score coming from Seán Griffin.

The next play decided the game when a long kick out was well won by Daniel Nix who made good headway before passing to Daniel Bowler who found the bottom corner of the net with a fine drive.

We held sway from here to the finish with further minors from Seán Griffin, Gavin Burrows and 2 points from Gazza.

There was a hold up in the 20th minute following an unfortunate injury to one of the Churchill players and we wish him well in his recovery.

Team: Rory Molloy, Stephen Nix, Sam Pituch, Aidan Mangan, Jordan Foley, Seán Collins, Deaglán Crowe, Fenton Collins ( 0-02), Daniel Nix, Seán Griffin (0-02), Daniel Bowler ( 1-01), TJ Heaphy, Gavin Burrows( 0-01), Keelan Crowe ( 2-0), Gazza ( 0-02).

Subs used: Barry Foley, Sean Duggan, Alan O’Connor and Darragh Healy.

This win moves us to 3rd place in the group with 3 games left to play – our next game is a home fixture on the weekend of 25th June to Firies.

Congrats:

Well done to Tomás Kennedy who played his part in Kerry minors win over Kildare at the weekend; also to Eddie Lacey who is part of Wayne Quillinan’s backroom team.

Kerry now move to the semi final where they will play Monaghan on Sat 24th June, venue and time to be confirmed by GAA during the week.

Best of luck to Micheál & Co when Kerry seniors  take on Louth in the final qualifier game on Sunday next in Portlaoise – Kerry need to win to guarantee themselves a place in the knockout stages of the championship. If successful, they will have to play again the following weekend ( 24th June).

Mark Fitzgeralds Limerick side will do battle in the quarter finals of the Tailteann Cup on Sat next 17th with a home tie vs Laois who were somewhat surprise winners over Fermanagh in the previous round.

Commiserations:

There was no fairytale for Gavin O’Brien and his team mates as New York were beaten by 0-15 to 0-10 by Carlow in the Tailteann Cup on Sat; New York led at the break, 0-08 to 0-06 with Gavin notching two points from full forward and an upset looked on the cards; however, Carlow dominated the 2nd half and ran out deserving winners.

Gavin was a welcome visitor to Strand Road on Sunday for the county league game vs Spa,  catching up with his former teammates before he heads back to the Big Apple.

Lotto:

The jackpot continues to rise and is now @ €7,400 – tickets €2 each with 3 for €5 – you can purchase tickets via the Klub, Rock St PO, Bettys Bar and Jimmys Foodstore – it could be you!

Juvenile Academy:

Last Saturday morning Nathan McDonnell of Ballyseedy Home & Gardens presented our Juvenile Academy with their new jerseys for various age groups sponsored by Ballyseedy Home and Garden in the company of our Chairman Tom Cronin, some of our coaches and players.

Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre have been on board as Sponsors of the Juvenile Academy since 2022 and we want to thank them for their continued support.

Record turnout at U7 training Sunday morning. The coaches could see big improvements from everyone and that each boy is putting in practice at home during the week and not just on a Sunday morning. Keep up the good work.

Juvenile Academy

U5

We had a fun under 5’s session in beautiful conditions on the astroturf in St Pats on Sunday Morning. Great to see more boys and girls joining in as the season progresses.

We practiced lots of movement, ball skills and finished with the option of a little match. Well done on all your hard work and thanks to lots of our senior players for joining in as mentors today! Well done to our players of the week Harry and Archie.

U7

The U7 mixed team had great fun on Sunday morning in Camp when they played some fun Go Games with Annascaul. We had excellent numbers 23 in total togged out for St Pats!

The skills on show were excellent and It’s great to see all the practice coming together. Well done to all the kids who took part. There might be another game next Sunday, to be confirmed!

U8/U10 Girls

We had a few older U8’s training with us on Sunday Morning, as the younger Girls were playing in the Go Games in Camp. They were a great addition to the U10’s, whilst in turn gaining some experience for the U8’s!

We had a great session overall and look forward to our next game against John Mitchels, details to be confirmed. Congratulations to our players of the week from both teams, both hugely deserved for their endeavour and hard work!

U9

Training resumed on Sunday morning after a break for last Sunday’s Dingle Way Challenge. The boys put in a great session where they had a relay race and practiced their kicking technique, both distance and accuracy.

They finished the session with a competitive game. It’s great to see the skills improving. Keep practicing at home.

U11

Annascaul visited Blennerville on Thursday last as the U11 County League Go Games continued.

The two games had plenty of scoring and great individual battles, Jace, Rylan, Noah, Cillian, and Cian were just a few of the outstanding performers. Thanks to Jake, Ben, Jack, and Dylan P who all helped make up numbers for Annascaul.

Sunday training was a slog in the heat and humidity, and everyone had worked up a sweat when we finished. There was great competitiveness in our skills drills and the training match was a real test of endurance by the end.

Darragh S and both Noah’s took some great scores while Jack, James and Bruce made some excellent high catches, it was good to see very well worked scores with lots of movement and a variety of passing to move the ball up the field.

Our next game is away to Beale (Ballybunion) on Thursday 15th June. Players to gather by 6:30pm at Beale’s pitch for a 7pm throw-in.

U12 Girls

The U12 Girls are away to Inbhear Sceine Gaels B team next Thursday evening at 7pm in the first round of the County League. Training continues Monday evening from 5. 30 to 6.30. It’s important we have full attendance at training before the game Thursday.

U13

Our U13’s travelled to Annascaul this evening to take on Castlegregory in the Lee Strand U13 County League D12 final. The game was played in glorious conditions with Annascaul having the pitch in great shape for the game.

Castlegregory got the better of the opening exchanges, but St Pats rallied and got an early goal from Noah Flynn to settle the nerves.

Charlie Sharp then got another goal from close range to extend St Pats lead, but Castle fought right back with a goal of their own just before half time to leave a single score between the teams at the interval.

St Pats introduced Thomas Colivet at half time followed by Hugh Costello, Sam Smith, and Dee Hanly later in the second half and all four subs had an impact when introduced.

The game was very close at the end of the third quarter after Castlegregory cancelled out an earlier goal from Stephen Enright with a well taken goal of their own.

This spurred our lads into action, and they took control of the last quarter to run out worthy winners, with the industrious Darragh Flahive adding our fourth and final goal.

The shield was presented to our winning captain James Daly by Kerry Coiste na nÓg Assistant Secretary Mags Evans. It was a great win for our lads which they deserve after their efforts in training and games so far this season.

Castlegregory also deserve huge credit as they were well in the game until the final quarter with a very young team.

Team: Gearóid Hingston, Paddy Flynn, Eddie Hayes, Jake Kelly, James Daly (C), Rian Flynn, Aidan Berry, Stephen Enright, Callum Rice, Tommy Costello, Darragh Flahive, Luke O’Sullivan, Noah Flynn, Charlie Sharp, and Isaac Price. Subs: Thomas Colivet, Hugh Costello, Dee Hanly and Sam Smith. Missing from today’s squad were Jace and Rylan Flynn and AJ Turner. Training continues this Tuesday and Thursday evening.

U14 Girls

Training continues this week for the U14 Girls on Monday and Friday.

U15

Our U15s are training hard in preparation for the Central Region League which starts on June 28th. We played a great challenge game Wednesday night against Austin Stacks. We will train Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week. Parents will be contacted in advance with times and venues.

Seniors

Our Round 9 game began with a point from Kieran Hurley in the first few minutes, a quick point replied by the opposition. With the next three points for us coming from Luke Mulligan, David O Callaghan, and Brendan Poff.

It was Sneem/Derrynane’s turn to score three points in quick succession. With a point each from Niall McCarthy and Gary Savage, we seemed in good position, with another point from opposition.

David O Callaghan added two more point of his own to keep us in the lead going into the end of the first half. St Pats 0-08 Sneem/Derrynane 0-05

Sneem/Derrynane opened the scoring with a quick goal and two points for the second half, David O Callaghan, and Kieran Hurley each got a point of their own to draw us. Another Point from Sneem/Derrynane with Eoin Greaney putting the ball over the bar for another point for us.

With another goal and two points scored by opposition we needed scores with a point coming from Patrick Dowling. Last point for Sneem/Derrynane was scored and Patrick Dowling added one last point.

Great determination was shown by the team to keep fighting to the bitter end unfortunately Sneem/Derrynane has the more scoring on the board in the end. St Pats 0-13 Sneem/Derrynane 2-11

St Pats Team: Paudi Bailey, Dylan Griffin, Niall McCarthy, Conor Moore, Luke Mulligan, Brian Murphy, Tommy Lynch, Liam Poff, Patrick Dowling, Gary Savage, Brendan Poff, Fergal O Brien, David O Callaghan, Kieran Hurley, and Eoin Greaney

Subs Used:  Breandan Savage for Dylan Griffin

Our seniors play their Round 10 game against St Senan’s on Saturday 17th of June at 7pm in Blennerville.

Please keep an eye for any changes in O Shea’s Gala, Byrnesworth and St Pats Old Clubhouse.

Charity Choir Concert

An amazing concert took place in St John’s Church on Sunday night last, beautiful music was played and sung by St John’s Church Choir, Kerry Chamber Choir, Kerry Orchestra and solo singers of Sean McElligott, Shauna Murphy, and Liam Heaslip. All proceeds went to The Lebanon Trust.

Tralee Parnells Senior hurlers that won the County League Division 2 title vs Causeway in Crotta last Thursday evening

Senior Hurling

Tralee Parnells 1-22 Causeway 2-12

Congratulations to our Senior hurlers who are Division 2 County League champions for 2023 after a convincing win over Causeway in Crotta last Thursday evening. Led by Captain and Man of the Match, Cathal Dunne, who got 2 great points, Parnells built up a big half time lead 0-16 points to 0-5.

Causeway came out firing on all cylinders and 2 quick goals had the gap down to 4 points at one stage. However a great goal from Darragh Reen, who finished with 1-3, put some daylight between the sides again.

Tralee Parnells Captain Cathal Dunne who received the Man of the Match award and the County League Division 2 Cup from Kerry Co Board Hurling Officer Liam Ross

Gearoid O’Doherty (Doc), returning from injury,  top scored with 0-14. The lads fought until the end and held out for a great victory – the first silverware for the club at county level.

Tralee Parnells Golf Classic
The club officially launched its inaugural golf classic in Caherslee last Friday evening. It will be held on Friday July 21st in Beaufort Golf Club. All funds raised will go to completing works on our new Academy pitch in Pairc na Darach in Oakpark.

In 2022, Tralee Parnells was granted a 13 year licence for the use of the GAA pitch, Pairc na Darach, at the Tralee Sports Complex in Oakpark for their Academy players. In order to upgrade the pitch at Pairc na Darach to make it suitable for playing hurling and camogie, substantial investment is required – over €30,000, of which a substantial amount has already been invested by the club.

New ball-stops have been erected, nets on the goalposts have been replaced, landscaping has been carried out and the pitch has been sanded, juvenile goalposts have been purchased.

Some final groundwork is required so the young hurlers and camogie players can display their skills on a top quality playing surface in a safe environment.  The club hopes to have the facility ready for their Academy by July or early August.

Entry fee for a Team of 4 in the golf classic is €200. There are also tee and green sponsorship opportunities available, as well as sponsorship of prizes.  Please contact Agnes at 087-8377969 or any member of the Committee for further information.

The club is asking local businesses, parents and supporters of the club to come on board to make this fundraiser a success and to provide the best playing facilities for our young hurlers and camogie players.

Kerry Ladies: Good luck to Mary O’Connell and the Kerry Ladies Team who are away to Dublin in Round 1 of the TG4 All-Ireland Championship next Saturday at 5pm in Parnell Park.

Senior Men: Round 9 of the Co. League took place in Killeen on Sunday last. Played in ideal conditions, apart from a slight breeze, Na Gaeil got a great result, 2 – 14 to 2 – 08, a result that looked very unlikely at half time when we trailed 0 – 03 to 2 – 04.

The old cliché, a game of two halves, certainly applied. Kenmare ambled through the first half while Na Gaeil stuttered and started, kicked bad wides, dropped the ball, miscued passes and generally did not raise a gallop.

We won the throw-in, but Kenmare won back the ball and Jimmy Lehane got their first point from play after 1 minute. Devon Burns equalised for us after two minutes with a long range free.

Eoghan McCarthy put the visitors ahead with a fine free followed by a point from play by Kevin O’Sullivan on six minutes followed by a goal on ten from Eoghan McCarthy Leaving us five points adrift.

Dara Devine got a point from play on eleven minutes. Kenmare continued on their merry way with a point from Kieran Fitzgibbon and a goal from Kieran Lehane. Jack Bourke got our last score of the half on twenty-two.  Half time score 2 – 04 to 0 – 03 in favour of the visitor.

Second half started and look like a continuation of the first. The visitors broke away from throw in and Eoghan McCarthy got a point from play in less than a minute leaving us 8 points adrift. However, they managed only three more, the last, a free, deep in injury time.

In the third minute Dan Goggin burst through for a point and followed with a goal, more or less from the kickout, which we had won.

Dara Devine, a free in the fifth was followed immediately by another from Devon Burns.  After some great play by the backs the ball came to Dan Goggin who slotted over. Jack Bourke after ten and Tadhg Reen got it all square, 1 09 to 2 06, with two well worked points.

From there to the end centre field and the backs kept control of all about them and kept the forwards well supplied with ball and nipped in the bud anything that came their way. Our scoring was completed with points from Dara Devine, Dan Goggin and Devon Burns. Dara Devine put the icing on the cake with a great goal with last kick of game.

The referee did well with no black or red cards issued or contentious yellows.

Over 30 Events Planned For Kingdom Pride Festival Next Month

.

KINGDOM Pride in Kerry is running from July 10th to 16th and the schedule of events has been released.

This is the longest and farthest reaching Pride Festival that has taken place in Kerry with over 33 events taking place during the seven days (see programme below).

The festival includes community and family-friendly events in Killarney, Tralee, and other towns and villages across the Kingdom.

Continued below…

.

The theme for this year’s Pride Festival is ‘Together In Love’ and encapsulates the spirit of what Pride is all about – celebrating love, inclusivity, and diversity.

Anyone interested in the events of the festival, regardless if they are members of the LGBTQ+ community or not are welcome to attend.

All events taking place are also for allies to come along and show their support by celebrating alongside their LGBTQ+ friends, family and neighbours.

Through a mix of events including hikes, kayaking,  bowling, art events, film screenings, family-friendly park celebrations and of course a nighttime event or two, the festival hopes to unite all communities throughout Kerry.

When speaking about the wide reaching nature of the festival this year, Co-Chairperson of Kingdom Pride Sabrina Crotty commented; “We are very excited to be bringing the Kingdom Pride in Kerry Festival to people across Kerry this year. We are especially excited about hosting our annual Pride Park Celebrations at the gorgeous Killarney House and Gardens on Saturday, July 15! Creating a festival in a county as vast as Kerry is no small feat, but everywhere we go communities are turning up and showing their support to help us bring the celebrations to life. Our theme this year could not be more apt.”

Events will be taking place across Listowel, Killorglin, Cahersiveen, Tralee, Kenmare, South Kerry, and this year’s Pride capital, Killarney.

Full event details, including dates and locations, will be available on social media, via Instagram and Facebook. Tickets available on Eventbrite.

REPORT: A Home Defeat For Kerry FC To Athlone Town

.
Photo: Adam Kowalczyk

David Moriarty reports on Friday’s Airtricity League Of Ireland Division 1 game at Mounthawk Park…

Kerry FC 0 – 1 Athlone Town

On Friday last, Kerry FC were at home for the second time this week as they faced promotion hopefuls Athlone Town in Mount Hawk Park.

The last time out between these two sides came in favour of the Kingdom who picked up their first and only win of the season so far.

It was a very historic win for Kerry FC and was helped by goals from Nathan Gleeson and Ryan Kelliher.

Continued below…

.

Since then, Kerry are yet to pick up a win at home and results have been varied. A fantastic draw away to Finn Harps and a 6-0 loss at home to Waterford this week alone shows how much of a tough learning season it has been for the boys in green.

This is the midway point of the season, and all teams have a full week off to rest and recuperate, so hopefully Kerry can end the first half of the season on a high note.

The Kerry team changed around a bit due to a few suspensions but one man who was back to the starting lineup against Finn Harps was captain Matt Keane.

Photo: Adam Kowalczyk

This week was the first time Matt started a home game in Mounthawk since funnily enough they played Athlone Town in March, so he would be looking to make an enormous impact in front of the home faithful.

In the dugout notes, Kerry FC Manager, Billy Dennehy described the game as “the perfect opportunity” for the team to put things right before the break week especially after the big loss at home on Monday.

The first half started quite even in possession with no big chances for either side. Athlone started slightly on top with the ball more in their attacking half, but they made nothing of it.

It was the home side with the first big opportunity when they had a goal ruled out for offside in the fifteenth minute.

Continued below…

.

Togor Silong’s tackle set Kerry away but a slow pass into the path of Ryan Kelliher which took a deflection was brilliantly finished by the number nine, but the linesman ruled it out questionably.

After the offside goal, Kerry started to gain a foothold in the game, and they played the ball around much calmer and more controlled.

Kerry would need to capitalize on this period of pressure if they wanted to bring something in at half time to give the visitors a run for their money.

Against the run of play, Athlone would have their first big chance of the game. A pass along the ground, flicked on by Frantz Pierrot, made its way into Adam Lennon.

His left-footed shot on the left side of the box was judged poorly and his effort went wide from the bottom right corner, helping Kerry feel relieved.

This first half started to look like a game of chess, as it was end-to-end and only seemed like a matter of time until one of the sides would edge ahead.

Kerry came close again with fifteen minutes left in the half. A trademark long throw-in from Sam Aladesanusi arrived at Sean McGrath who flicked the ball on beautifully to Ronan Teahan at the byline. Ronan crossed back into McGrath who had a backheel effort gathered by Enda Minogue.

To the home fans dismay, it would be Athlone to go ahead first. A throw put into the feet of Valerii Dolia broke into the box at pace and had his left foot shot whipped around and found the bottom left corner.

A goal that Kerry would be very dissatisfied with to give away so close to half time as it really came from nothing. From the very even first half it seemed like Kerry once again had it all to do in the second.

The second half started as a carbon copy of the first, Athlone were slightly on top, but nothing separated the sides.

Kerry seemed to be one good pass away from being in on goal on every attack. It was a half of football dominated by only one team.

That was Kerry FC. A fantastic cross from deep into the box by Matt Keane put serious pressure on the Athlone backline. A ping pong type of attack saw Kerry not being able to get a shot off and Athlone struggled to clear the ball before eventually doing so.

As the half went on Athlone really started to feel the constant pressure that the home side were putting them under as they struggled to get out of their own half. Athlone’s defensive line was one of two.

Either very impressive and well-structured or saved by poor linesmen’s decisions that stopped Kerry from having a couple of real opportunities deep into the attacking third. Most in Mounthawk would agree it was the second.

With just eighteen minutes to play, Kerry seemed to have leveled. A pass through the middle by Ronan Teahan was received in Dennis Bergkamp-style fashion by Ryan Kelliher who turned his defender superbly.

He took a left-footed shot from just nine yards out that seemed to find the bottom left corner only for Athlone goalkeeper Enda Minogue to pull off a save-of-the-season contender and tip it onto the post.

This save kept Kerry at bay again and made them feel like it was not their night.

The Kerry lads will have nightmares of Minogue in the days to come as he popped up again to catch a thumping cross into the box from Teahan which seemed definite to find someone in a Kerry shirt.

The closing minutes of the game were still all Kerry and the Athlone lads played as if the 1-0 would be enough to keep them safe. Evidently, it would be enough, and Athlone left Mounthawk Park with a stolen three points.

Kerry would leave both devastated that they could not nick something, but also immensely proud at the fact that they were the better team on the night.

This break comes at the right time and the boys can rest and relax before kicking off the second half of the season away to Bray Wanderers on the twenty-third of June.
