LAST week, members of ViClarity participated in the planting of indigenous Hawthorn trees in Tralee, as part of their corporate social responsibility initiative.

The company, based at Kerry Technology Park, contributed to the planting of more than 400 trees at Holy Family Primary School, which will enhance the biodiversity of the area in time to come.

These trees will serve as vital habitats for local wildlife, offering shelter, food, and breeding grounds for various species.

Tralee Tidy Towns Chairperson, Brendan O’Brien, said “we are delighted to have the support of ViClarity today on this important project, helping the school community to take climate and biodiversity action simultaneously with the planting of a native Hawthorn hedge. We were delighted to collaborate with Holy Family Primary School, ViClarity, Trees on the Land who donated the trees and Green and Growing landscaping who provided the mulch for the trees”.

ViClarity’s CEO, Ogie Sheehy said “I am delighted that the ViClarity team was able to give back to the local community this morning by helping plant Hawthorn trees in Tralee. This greatly helps with the biodiversity of the local area and the sustainability of our environment, underpinning our commitment to our CSR values at ViClarity.”

Through initiatives like this, we strive to leave a lasting, positive impact on both the natural world and the communities we serve.

THE Board of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) held their March meeting at the Hotel, Culinary and Tourism Building in Munster Technological University (MTU).

Present at the end of the meeting were members of the board of Tralee Chamber Alliance Mark Sullivan and Martha Farrell along with Anne Looney of MTU.

Tralee Chamber Alliance has been a member of KTIF since its inception back in 2018 and is represented on the board by John Edwards of Wild Water Adventures.

As Tralee gets ready to host the 7th International Fire Behaviour and Fuel Conference this month, which will be based out of the Rose Hotel and will run alongside the US host Boise in Idaho and Canberra, Australia, Tralee Chamber members are keen to highlight the quality that the county capital has to offer.

Board member of KTIF and CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Colette O’Connor said: “The relationship between KTIF and its members including Tralee Chamber has been instrumental in the growth and strengthening of Kerry as the Irish destination for visitors, engagement with industry members has been at the heart of KTIF since the very beginning.

“I can remember the impact that first workshop held in the Brehon Hotel with Dr. Terry Stephens had back in 2018. The room was full of industry representatives from across the county all there to gain insights and to come together to see what we could do as a collective to drive Kerry as the ultimate destination for visitors both national and international and to be an effective voice for tourism in the county.”

Pat O’Leary, Chairperson of Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, said; “KTIF since its formation has on behalf of its members, championed the tourism sector across the whole county.  The benefits of a collective approach to marketing, sustainability, and training as the single entity representing the tourism industry in the county interacting with local and national government bodies and industry agencies have enhanced Kerry’s reputation as the number one visitor destination in the country.  The enhanced discoverkerry.com website and new Kerry brand developed in conjunction with Kerry County Council and Kerry SciTech is an example of how the county can benefit from this cooperative approach.”

REPORT: Kerry FC Share The Points Once Again After Draw With UCD

.

David Moriarty reports on Kerry FC’s game against UCD in Dublin yesterday evening…

UCD 1-1 KERRY FC

Kerry were back on the road on the Bank Holiday Monday as they faced UCD for their first-ever trip to the capital.

It was a quick turnaround from Friday’s game which saw Conor McCarthy’s men draw at home against Wexford FC.

UCD came into the game with three wins in a row over Athlone Town, Cobh Ramblers, and Longford Town respectively. The confidence in the team was flying as they look to get back to the Premier Division where they had been for the previous two years.

Continued below…

.

Kerry made a couple changes from Friday night with Victor Udeze and Cian Brosnan starting ahead of Ryan Kelliher and Sam Aladesanusi who was still feeling the effects of his collision on Friday night which forced him off in the first half.

Kerry FC fans were happy with the current unbeaten run by the first team, but UCD was a completely different test and knew that the team needed to be on their A-game if they were to come away from the bowl with the five-game unbeaten streak still intact.

Kerry had their first sight of goal when they earned a corner which was swung in by Cian Brosnan. The ball reached Andy Spain who got his head to it but was not anywhere near strong enough to trouble Kian Moore. Daire McCarthy added an effort from far out just six minutes later but was well wide of goal.

UCD had the majority of the possession in the early parts of the game but were not creating anything concrete. Michael McCullagh and Ciaran Behan tried shots from outside the area in an attempt to break the Kerry resistance, but both were saved and gathered by Antonio Tuta.

Continued below…

.

The second attempt was more challenging for the Croatian shot-stopper, but he eventually got down and covered the ball saving any incoming danger of the ball going into an empty net.

Two minutes after the second shot on goal, UCD took the lead. Ciaran Behan who tested the waters earlier had plenty of space to go for yet another effort on goal.

He hit the jackpot on this occasion and his left-footed effort darted straight into the right side of the goal giving the hosts the lead with eleven minutes before the break.

Behan was involved again five minutes after the goal but not for the right reasons as he was booked for simulation which was not contested by many of his teammates.

The half-finished in a lead for UCD, and it was evident Kerry would need a big pep talk ahead of the second half.

Many times, similar to this last season, the game would be finished and done but the resilience Kerry FC has shown in 2024 has been something we did not see at all last year giving them all the chance in the world of getting back into this game.

Kennedy Amechi and Ryan Kelliher replaced Victor Udeze and Cian Brosnan at halftime in an attempt to salvage something in the second half and just twelve minutes after the restart they did so thanks to Daniel Okwute.

Okwute was persistent in creating a chance with the ball on the right wing and got away from two tackles on the flank. His first cross was blocked, and it came back to him to try again which he did and although it went straight into the hands of Moore, the keeper dropped the ball into the back of his own net.

Even though it was not as pretty on the eye as his goal away against Athlone, he did not care in the slightest and Kerry were back in it

The goal in the early stages of the half gave this Kerry team the world of confidence and they were playing much better than the opening half.

UCD were going without possession for substantial portions and were being forced back by this rejuvenated Kerry FC team.

UCD had another couple of big chances towards the end of the game with Ciaran Behan having a header at the near post go just wide of Antonio Tuta’s left-hand post. Michael McCullagh had a shot go over the crossbar too as time was running out for both sides to get the winner.

Kerry thought they had won it as a 92nd minute, but Ryan Kelliher’s goal was ruled out for offside.

After further inspection after the game, it was fair to say the right call had been made. The rest of injury time was played out and Kerry came out of Dublin in their first trip to the capital with a point.

Just one game away from the first quarter of the season being completed and already Kerry FC have half of their points total of last season.

The team is definitely going places and getting better and better each week. Once again, they hope to get that much-needed first-ever League of Ireland home win on Friday night when they take on basement side Longford Town in Mounthawk Park.

WHY? Sports news on local radio on Sunday night last: priority was given, in club news, to another code in England and in Scotland before announcing the results of OUR country’s second most important national final(s) in Gaelic football! Was Dublin v Doire and Armagh v Tír Chonaill less important than club games in a faraway place? Why are GAA games playing ‘second fiddle’ on OUR airways? Are we less proud of our own? Náire? Mórtas cine ‘in easnamh’?

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.

Seniors:

We travelled to Kilcummin on Saturday night for the 2nd round of the county league where throw -in took place at 5 pm.

To say we were understrength would belittle those that started but we were without Donagh Buckley, Ross O’Callaghan, Tom Hoare and Barry John from our previous outing vs Laune Rangers.

Many of our fringe players, who have performed with distinction in the lower leagues, certainly put forward their credentials for more regular game time at this level and will have benefited enormously from the experience.

Darragh O’Connor was the only change from the starting XV with Daniel Bowler dropping to the bench.

We won the toss and played with the strong breeze and were quickly into our stride notching 3 early points through Darragh (2) & Gearóid Savage to a solitary Kilcummin white flag.

Kilcummin reduced the deficit but further scores from Darragh, Shane McElligott and the dangerous Gazza had us in the ascendancy and we retired to the dressing room , 0-07 to 0-05 ahead – perhaps we should have been a bit more ahead given the chances created.

Our defence was rock solid in this opening period, defending in numbers and not committing any fouls – Sam Pituch in particular along with Darragh McElligott and Ryan Carroll were unyielding. Seán Collins for a second week in row put in a good shift and can be happy with his display.

The half back line of TJ Heaphy and Stephen Nix too were solid and essayed forward at every opportunity – one particular sally upfield from Stephen saw him find Gearóid Dillane with a peach of a ball which resulted in a point following a foul on Gearóid.

The 2nd half saw the introduction of both Con Barrett and Conor Hayes and we found ourselves having to defend more as Paul O’Shea thundered into the game and the locals levelled by the 10th minute following two good scores.

Daniel Bowler was next to enter into the fray and he was not long in making his presence felt.

Firstly he tracked back to win a turnover and he was next involved when finding Con Barrett who offloaded to Conor Hayes to put us back in front again.

The pivotal moment of the game then took place in the 15th minute; we worked the ball upfield and this time Daniel again, popped a lovely ball into Con who was dragged back as he sought to find the net – the ref duly pointed to the spot but Kilcummin were saved any further damage as he did not deem the foul worthy of a card.

Ryan Carroll came forward and despite striking his shot well to this right, keeper Keith O’Leary dived to his left and with a strong hand deflected the ball away from the danger area – this save gave the homesters further oxygen and whilst they fired a number of wides they scored the final 3 points from Paul O’Shea, Cian Foley and Noel Duggan.

In the final analysis, we were perhaps unlucky to come away empty handed – we go again next week when we travel to Dirreen to take on Legion.

Team: Robert O’Connor, Sam Pituch, Darragh McEllligott, Seán Collins, Stephen Nix, TJ Heaphy, Ryan Carroll, Jake Foley, Fenton Collins, Padraig Griffin, Shane McElligott, Gearóid Dillane, Gearóid Savage, Conor O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Connor.

Subs used: Conor Hayes, Con Barrett, Daniel Bowler, Sam McCarthy, TJ McMahon.

Div 6:

Kilcummin were the visitors to Strand Road on Easter Sunday for our opening game in this year’s competition.

We gained a modicum of revenge for the defeat of our division 1 side when coming out on top by a 3  goal margin, 5-11 to 2-11.

We handed senior competitive debuts to the likes of Jake Hoare, Odhran Kerins and Ryan Houlihan and they did not disappoint – Gearóid Meehan too excelled with the evergreen Rory Molloy wearing the no 3 shirt; Ben O’Brien fielded some great ball in midfield with TJ McMahon and Sam McCarthy being particularly effective up front.

Overall a great start to the league – mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad!

Club PRO Pat Flavin and Club Chairman Oliver Molloy at the Golf Classic on Friday.

Golf Classic:

Our fundraising golf classic took place last Friday in Tralee GC  and to say it was a success would be a gross understatement.

The morning sun was a portent for a brilliant day that followed with some  great golf, great banter, laughter and the overall consensus being that everybody had a wonderful day.

The prize giving ceremony later in Strand Road was a most memorable night with some great fun and craic – Niall Quinn, a guest of Bulmers team for the day,  regaled those present with some great stories of Italia ‘90 etc bringing to a close a perfect day.

Adams Garage took the overall prize, with Ber Walsh winning the longest drive for ladies and Joe Collins taking the men’s accolade.

Norman & Elaine Foley and family were the main sponsors for which we are truly grateful with the Healy family and McCauley’s Pharmacy for sponsoring the longest drive and nearest the pin.

The raffle for a weekend away for two in the Skellig Hotel, kindly donated by the Garvey group was won by local man Fionbarr Walsh with Joe McCarthy being the winner of a night in Benners Tralee compliments of Alan O’Sullivan.

The organising committee, spearheaded by the indefatigable Antoinette Sayers, deserve huge praise for executing such an enjoyable and profitable event with a special thanks to Tralee GC who were most helpful all along and also provided such great support last Friday – the course was in fantastic condition given the recent harsh weather events.

Condolences:

We offer our sincere condolences to our juvenile secretary Nora Corridon on the passing of her aunt, Catherine ( Dalton, Ballybunion) – ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

The Credit Union SFL Div 1 Round 2
Ballymacelligott 1-08 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-08
Venue: Caherslee Date: 30th  March 24

We in Ballymac GAA wish to extend our Thanks to Joe Wallace & The Caherslee Committee who facilitated our game in Caherslee GAA Grounds on Saturday evening last. Despite the atrocious weather the pitch and surrounds were in good condition thanks to Joe and his team.

Aidan Breen’s majestic goal from a free, minutes into the second half was one of the highlights of this game. Another feature of the game was watching Eoin Creedon coming out from the back line with the ball. Time and time again he cleared the ball to safety.

Dara Sweeney opened the scoring with a point from play for Ballymac. Milltown replied with three from play from Dara Hogan, Sean Hogan, and Gavin Horan. Ballymac Captain Vinnie Horan added a point from play.

Tadhg Brick broke down a fine ball and passed it to Daniel O’Shea who gave a great pass to Aidan Breen who added another point for Ballymac.

Daire Keane and Sean Hogan added one each for their respective sides before Aidan Breen pointed from a free following a foul on Daire Keane. The score was 0-5 to 0-4 halfway through the half.

Things stagnated for Ballymac after another minute when Cathal Moriarty for the Mid-Kerry side worked his way past three defenders and scored a goal.

Milltown was in the lead and added another point in the 21st minute of the half. In this quarter Ballymac had four wides and this left the Half-time score with the Milltown in the lead by three points.

Half Time Score: Ballymacelligott 0-5  Milltown/Castlemaine  1-5

The second half opened with a sublime goal from Aidan Breen. Aidan took a free and it curled into the goal-a once-in-a-season goal to witness that inspired the team and warmed the Ballymac supporters!  A foul on Donal Daly close to the goal gave Aidan Breen another point from the resulting free.

Ballymac now had a point lead six minutes into the second half. Cathal Moriarty leveled the game with a fine point from play 11 minutes into the half. Ballymac went into the lead again when Vinnie Horan won a ball and scored a point. Within a minute Dara Hogan had scored a point from a free and Milltown were level.

Aidan Breen scored Ballymac’s last game point from a free following a foul on the Ballymac Captain. Dara Hogan leveled again from a free and this was the game’s final score. There was plenty of action left after that last score 21 minutes into the half but neither team got that coveted last point to win the game. The game ended in a draw.

This was a solid performance from the team with Vinnie Horan, and Aidan Breen outstanding in the forwards as were Tadhg Brick and  Eoin Creedon in defense.

Full-Time Score: Ballymacelligott 1-08 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-08

Team and Scorers:
Christy Leen, Eoin Creedon, Darragh Sweeney(0-1),, Josh O’Keeffe, Daniel O’Shea, Tadhg Brick, Cathal Dunne, Aidan Breen (1-4), Brian Lonergan, Adam Sheehy, Vinnie Horan (Capt)(0-2)  Daire Keane (0-1), Dara Regan, Donal Daly, and Niall Collins.

Substitutes Used: Maurice O’Connell and Michael Herlihy.

The Credit Union SFL Div 6B Round 2
Ballymacelligott 3-10 John Mitchels 2-11
Venue: Spa Date: 24th March 24

Ballymac GAA appreciates and wishes to thank John Mitchel’s Club for facilitating our game last Saturday evening.  At scáth a cheile a mhaireann na daoine.

The difference at the end of the game, was a goal from Conor Brick, the thirteen score of the game in the last ten minutes that made the difference. Very little separated the teams who scored thirteen scores each and Ballymac’s win by two points gave them their first two points in the County League.

The game’s first two points came from frees, Ted Fitzgerald’s for Mitchel’s, and Michael Herlihy for Ballymac. Shane McGillicuddy fired a strong shot past Mitchel’s goalkeeper and within a few minutes Sky Lynch had turned over a ball and passed it to Michael Herlihy who added another goal for Ballymac.

Mitchel’s scored a point. Following great work by Brian Cassidy, Shane Gilroy added one for Ballymac, Brian Costello scored a point from a free for Mitchel’s followed by another point and a goal from the Tralee side. The last two scores, before halftime, were points by Skye Lynch and Mike Hoare

The Half Time score was: Ballymac 2-04 John Mitchel’s 1-03

Peter Murphy started the second half for John Mitchel’s and made an immediate impact for the Tralee side who scored a goal from a pass from his superb pass. Michéal Savage scored a point for Ballymac as did Peter Murphy for Mitchels, Skye Lynch caught the kick-out and passed the ball to Barry Lyons who passed it back to Skye who scored a point. Brian Costello added one for Mitchels.  John Mitchel’s scored three points on the trot two from Peter Murphy and they were in the lead by two points.

Mike Hoare added a point, John Mitchel added one—Maurice O’Connell for Ballymac, and Peter Murphy from Mitchels traded points. Things went well for Ballymac with Conor Brick scoring that all-important goal followed by points from Michéal Savage.  Peter Murphy scored the last point of the game before the whistle blew.

Full-Time score was: Ballymac 3-10  John Mitchel’s 2-11

This was another solid performance from a team that is improving every day. Every player was involved in the game and individually had an important effect on the final result.  Conor Martin making his debut in goals in the SFL did well as did Ciarán Brosnan and Cian Godley in the backs.  In the forwards: Skye Lynch, Shane Gilroy, Mike Hoare, and Shane McGillicuddy performed well

Team and scorers:  Conor Martin, Ciarán Brosnan, Cian Godley, Jonathan Brick, Cathal White, Brian Cassidy, Skye Lynch (0-2), Shane Gilroy (0-1), Barry Lyons (Capt) Michael Herlihy (1-1), Andy Rogers, Mike Hoare (0-3), Shane McGillicuddy( 1-0), and  Jamie Burke.

Subs Used: Michéal Savage (0-2),  Maurice O’Connell (0-1), Conor Brick (1-0), Brian Godley and James Carmody.

U11 Boys Training: Before the chocolate spree started our u11 boys got in a good session yesterday morning in the MTU. Well done to all the boys!

Senior Men: Yesterday our Senior men were away to Templenoe in Round 2 of the Credit Union County League Division 2. The first few minutes of the game were very stop-start, resulting in neither team registering a score until a free from Dara Devine on 10 minutes put our lads in front.

This was soon followed by a point by Tomás Ó hAiniféin from play and another Dara Devine free leaving us ahead by 3 points to nil after 14 minutes. A super goal-line clearance by our centre-back Ruairí O’Sullivan prevented an equalizing goal before Jack Bourke added our 4th point to leave our lads in a commanding position.

However, Templenoe found their shooting boots and kicked 4 of the next 5 points to leave us with just a single point advantage at halftime, 5 points to 4. The game was probably decided in the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half as Templenoe upped the ante and notched 3 quick fire scores from a 45, a free and 1 from play.

Indeed it could have been worse only for a brilliant double save from John Kearney preventing what seemed like a certain Templenoe goal. Templenoe were successful with the resultant 45, pushing their lead out to 3 points with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Another great save by John Kearney was followed by a number of wides from both teams. Eventually Templenoe added another score to leave them 4 points ahead with 10 minutes left. Our lads rallied, adding points from Dara Devine, Mark Lynch and Peter Doyle but it wasn’t to be their day and Templenoe held on to win by a single point. Final score: Templenoe 0-9, Na Gaeil 0-8.

Team: John Kearney, Enda O’Connor, Ryan O’Neill, Seán Barrett, Peter Doyle, Ruairí O’Sullivan, Eoin Doody, Tomás O’hAinifein, Jamesie O’Connor, Kieran O’Donovan, Dara Devine, Cian Devine, Mark Lynch, Jack Bourke, Jack Sheehan. Senior

There was an outstanding display of football last Saturday when our seniors met Kilgarvan in their Round 2 game, but it was St Pat’s that pipped the post for a win. With determination from both teams from early on supporters got a match to remember.

Kilgarvan opened the scoring with a point, Fergal O’Brien was the one who started our scoring with a point also. Straight off the mark this game was going to be heated, Kilgarvan got a goal and two points. With a high kick from the hands of Fergal O’Brien the ball beautifully landed into the top right-hand corner net to secure a goal, with a free in our favour allowed Fergal O’Brien to add another point.

Both teams were well matched in this game with each side not giving an inch, two more points for Kilgarvan with strong defence from St Pat’s players. Another free given to Fergal O’Brien allowed St Pat’s to achieve another point on the board. Kilgarvan quick to close the gap put a point over the bar, Brian Murphy wanting to improve the deficit added another point along with Fergal O’Brien point.

As time ticked on, Eoin O’Carroll with fresh legs hand passed to Gary Savage to put it over the bar. One last point from Kilgarvan and Eoin Greaney’s final point for St Pats brought the game to draw, Half time St Pats 1-07 Kilgarvan 1-07

The second half began with three points from Fergal O’Brien two from play and one from a free edged us ahead. Not to be outdone Kilgarvan were quick to take control of the ball and place it over the bar.

With a score for score happening Brian Murphy once again added a point, Kilgarvan were not willing to relent and got a goal and two points one from play and one from a free. Encouragement on the sideline from both sides allowed each team to push themselves to the limits,

Fergal O’Brien, and Eoin Greaney each added fantastic points. With the kickout Cillian Lynch grabbed the ball over his opponent’s head, Jordan Conway waiting to fast track the ball up to Eoin Greaney where it soared over the bar. Kilgarvan not out of the match yet managed to obtain the ball and send it over St Pats bar.

With the clock ticking down St Pats three final scores came from Eoin Greaney, Fergal O’Brien, and Gary Savage in the form of points.

With seconds passing by Kilgarvan got two points in quick succession, silence on the sideline for both teams waiting for the final whistle to blow.

When it did scenes of pure excitement and the hard work both teams displayed in this match was evident. Full Time St Pats 1-18 Kilgarvan 2-14

REPORT: Another Point For Kerry FC As They Draw With Wexford

.

David Moriarty reports on Kerry FC earning another point at Mounthawk Park last night…

KERRY FC 1-1 WEXTFORD FC

Kerry FC kicked off the bank holiday weekend with a home game in Mounthawk Park against Wexford FC.

Kerry FC came into the game unbeaten in their last four games with a win in the Munster Senior Cup Semi-Final versus Treaty United and three draws in their last three League of Ireland games.

Wexford came to Tralee off the back of a hugely dramatic win away to Bray Wanderers in the Carlisle Grounds.

Continued below…

.

A Thomas Oluwa penalty in the eighty-fifth minute secured all three points for Wexford FC. It was Wexford’s second win in their opening four games of the season placing them sixth in the table.

Kerry conveyed a fantastic defensive display last week in Ballybofey and hoped for the same on Friday as they set up with the same five in the back defensive system which worked perfectly for them last week, securing their first clean sheet of the season in the process.

Kerry were starting to make themselves a tough opposition to come up against and it had to be said that this was something Kerry FC supporters would have hoped for coming into the clubs second season in League of Ireland football.

Kerry started the opening exchanges on the front foot and were creating the best chances. Ryan Kelliher had an opportunity to put the home side in front with an early lead in the first minute as he got on the end of a long pass over the top of the Wexford defence.

Kelliher’s effort went over the crossbar without causing any sort of struggle for Mansfield loanee Owen Mason in between the sticks.

Continued below…

.

Just ten minutes later after some fantastic approach play in the attacking third, Kerry struck in front through a first Kerry FC senior goal from left-back Sean O’Connell.

Wexford captain Ethan Boyle played the ball out of the box into a dangerous area to Mikie Rowe who was completely unaware that O’Connell was behind him and snuck onto his first touch.

The second Sean got in possession of the ball he struck his shot with great precision into the bottom right corner.

The goal was followed by a beautiful moment when the entire Kerry team ran over to the bench to celebrate with Cian Brosnan, the club’s number 17 who was on the bench following a family bereavement during the week. This moment highlighted the unity and strength within this growing Kerry FC side.

Even though the game started off at a very high tempo, this quickly changed as unfortunate injuries started to control the tempo of the remainder of the half.

Players such as Cian O’Malley, Sam Aladesanusi and Aaron Robinson all made way through knocks in the opening forty-five. Even though the fast pace of the game was entertaining to watch, the stoppages benefited Kerry as it helped them take the wind out of the Wexford sails.

With six minutes added before halftime, there were half-hearted shouts for a Wexford penalty, but referee Chris Sheehan had a perfect view of the situation and decided there was not enough for him to point to the spot on that occasion.

In the fourth minute of added time, Ethan Kos did very well to block the shot of Aaron Dobbs. A cross was swung in brilliantly into the back post beating everyone in the air before reaching Dobbs but just as he took on the shot, Kos was on hand to direct the effort out for a corner which eventually led to nothing.

Just a minute or so later the final whistle blew in the first half and Kerry were on top in what was an even and entertaining contest.

Five minutes after the restart Wexford got their equaliser and Aaron Dobbs made up for his earlier missed opportunity.

A fantastic cross into the area saw Dobbs leap up ahead of Finn Barrett and headed the ball into the left side corner of the goal giving Antonio Tuta no chance.

A great goal from a Wexford perspective but it could be said that the cross should have been closed down earlier.

Owen Mason was back in action again as he saved another Ryan Kelliher effort from close range.

Twelve minutes later, Daniel Okwute was played in on goal thanks to a superb over-the-top through pass from Steven Healy, but Okwute made the angle that bit harder for himself and dragged his shot a yard wide of Mason’s left-hand post.

Wexford started picking up yellow card after yellow card for cynical tackles from the likes of Darragh Livingston, Ethan Boyle and Ben Lynch.

This was to prevent Kerry from the counterattack on each occasion, but frustration started to set in from the home players which led to a yellow card for Kerry FC captain Andy Spain for pointing out these types of challenges to Chris Sheehan.

Cian Brosnan entered the pitch with twelve minutes to go and his pinpoint accuracy on long passes came to fruition right away as he picked out Daniel Okwute.

Unfortunately for Kerry, his shot went just wide of the mark on what looked to be the last chance of the night.

Wexford defender Ben Lynch picked up a second yellow and subsequent red card for another poor foul in the last thirty seconds of the game.

The free kick was put into a good area but was punched away by Owen Mason and Chris Sheehan blew the final whistle with the game ending in a 1-1 stalemate.

Kerry will be disappointed not to pick up that first home league win but will be pleased with the fact that they are becoming increasingly hard to beat as they are now undefeated in the last five competitive games.

This is a great way to be as they now travel to Dublin for the first time to take on UCD on the bank holiday Monday in just two days.

REHEARSALS are in full swing for Tralee Musical Society’s production of the musical comedy Sister Act which will be staged from April 9th to April 13th.

Some of the cast gathered at Siamsa on Friday in full dress for a photoshoot to promote the show which is based on the hit 1992 film. The stage production is filled with gospel music, dancing and a  story that will entertain audiences.

Tracy Foley is Mother Superior, alongside award-winner Clodagh Harrington as the ‘nun on the run’, Deloris Van Cartier. Featured nuns also include Tracy O’Keeffe, Caroline Spillane, Brona Ringland, Anne Marie Earley and Mary Higgins.

When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent.

Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover.

Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.

Tickets are €21 and can be booked at the Siamsa Tíre box office on 066-7123055 or via the  website: https://siamsatire.com/.   Scroll down for photos….

Know Your Rights: Boundary Disputes Between Neighbours

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Who owns the boundary between your property and your neighbour’s?

The general rule is that any boundaries between your land and your neighbour’s land are jointly owned by both you and your neighbour.

But you may be able to prove that you own a boundary structure outright. Even if you can show that you have outright ownership of a boundary structure, your neighbour may have certain rights over that structure.

If you do not know where the precise boundary between your property and your neighbour’s property is, or how the boundary is owned, you should start by investigating your title.

Your title documents are the deeds and related papers that describe your land. Your property may be registered in the Land Registry. You should get legal advice if there is a dispute about the ownership of any part of your property or land.

Continued below…

.

What is a party structure?

A party structure is any structure that divides separately owned buildings, or is situated at a boundary line or so close to a boundary line that you could not carry out works to the structure without access to the adjoining structure or land.

It can be a wall, arch, ceiling, floor, partition, ditch, fence, hedge, shrub, tree or any other structure.

Can you carry out works to a party structure?

You should always get your neighbour’s consent before carrying out works to a party structure. If you carry out works without your neighbour’s permission, your neighbour could take a claim for trespass and nuisance.

You must pay your neighbour’s reasonable costs for getting professional advice to assess the likely consequences of the work.

You must also pay reasonable compensation for the inconvenience caused by the works and reimburse your neighbour for any damage done to their property.

You are entitled to take into account your neighbour’s use and enjoyment of the party structure when assessing the compensation they are due.

If you fail to compensate your neighbour, they can apply to the District Court for an order to compel you to make good any damage, or to pay them for the costs and expenses.

Continued below…

.

You are entitled to carry out works on a party structure in the following circumstances:

• Works that are required in order to comply with any statutory provision, for example, the requirements of the Building Regulations
• Exempted developments under the Planning Acts (developments for which planning permission is not needed), or developments for which you have planning permission or which are required in order to comply with the conditions of a planning permission
• Works required for the preservation of the party structure or of any building or unbuilt-on land of which it forms a part
• Any other works that will not cause substantial damage or inconvenience to your neighbour, or that even if they will cause damage or inconvenience, it is nevertheless reasonable to carry them out
• You should be careful not to leave a party structure in a dangerous condition as a result of your actions.

What happens if your neighbour does not consent to works?

You can apply to the District Court for a works order. A works order may:

Authorise you, or people authorised by you, to enter your neighbour’s building or land for any purpose connected with the works

Require you to indemnify or give security to your neighbour for damages, costs and expenses caused by or arising from the works or likely to be caused or to arise

The procedure for getting a works order is set out in Order 93A of the District Court Rules. You must notify your neighbour of your intention to apply for a works order. The required form is available from the District Court clerk.

There are also forms available for an application to the District Court for damage to be made good and for applications to modify or discharge (cancel) a works order. The other party must be notified in these cases as well.

Can I cut trees and hedges which are encroaching on my property?

A tree or hedge on a boundary is generally the property of both landowners. You are not allowed to cut down the tree or hedge without your neighbour’s permission.

Overhanging branches or roots that are encroaching on your land can be cut back without permission, but only as far as the boundary line. You should still discuss this with your neighbour to avoid disagreements.

You should make sure that the tree is not the subject of a tree preservation order. Tree preservation orders are made by the local authority.

You should check with the local authority before cutting back or taking any action against a tree that is subject to a tree preservation order.

Can Utility companies cut back trees on my property?

Electricity and telecommunications companies have various rights to cut down or lop trees that are on private property that may obstruct wires, under the Electricity (Supply) Act 1927.

They must give seven days’ notice to the landowner of their intention to do this. You may choose to have the work done yourself. If you do, you must notify the company within seven days, and the utility provider must pay the costs involved.

• If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

Finnegan On Films: An Easter Parade Of Movies On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, says Saturday throws up some fine films on the box…

There was a time when there was traditional Bank Holiday classics rolled out, but we appear to be surprisingly light this weekend.

Swallows and Amazons (Saturday 1.15pm RTE2) is a rather old fashioned story of children getting up to a series of escapades while boating in the Lake District in the way we would have made our own entertainment during summer holidays.

It is very much a “jolly hockey sticks/Famous Five” style of story, involving adventures in dinghies named Swallow and Amazon, and stars Virginia McKenna, who is fondly remembered from films such as’A Town like Alice’ and ‘Born Free’ and Ronald Fraser.

Continued below…

.

There is, however, some recognition of the Easter Weekend with King of Kings (Saturday 2.40pm RTE1) a biblical epic telling the story of the birth, life and crucifixion of Christ.

It stars Jeffrey Hunter as Christ, chosen ahead of Peter Cushing, Christopher Plummer and Max von Sydow apparently because of his striking eyes, and Siobhan McKenna as Mary.  Other famous face cameos include Robert Ryan as John the Baptist and Rip Torn as Judas

Jumanji:The Next Level (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) sees the previous players of Jumanji, played by Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black, return once more to try to rescue of their own.

They will have to deal with all sorts of dangers, in arid deserts and snow filled mountains, to escape this most dangerous game for at least the fourth time with another sequel in production.

Continued below…

A rather more gritty change of pace comes next with The Informer (Saturday 9.50 RTE2) in which ex-con Pete Koslow (Joel Kinnaman) is working undercover for FBI agents Montgomery and Wilcox (Clive Owen and Rosamund Pike) to bring down a Polish drug lord known as the General.

Things get even more complex when Koslow’s life is saved by the General, and he is forced to break parole to get back in prison and get back to providing the inmates with drugs.  Nor is there is any guarantee that he can trust his FBI handlers!

Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald star in The Breakfast Club (Saturday 11.05 TG4) a much loved John Hughes drama.

Five teenagers from different sections of the social strata are thrown together for a Saturday morning detention, supposedly to write a 1000 word essay.

Instead they indulge in listening to music, smoking marijuana and finding out how much they have in common together after all.

That’s not quite how detention worked in my day – not that I ever was in detention – but this is a real memory blast for those who yearn for the Eighties.

So, not a classic weekend for films, but feel free to break into the Easter Eggs early and Enjoy!

IT was a fine morning for a brisk stroll as the Kerry Hospice Foundation held their annual Good Friday Walks around the county.

A total of 21 walks took place in Kerry with the event proving a huge fundraiser for the Foundation, raising over €50,000 in the last number of years.

In Tralee, participants set off in the sunshine at 10am from The Grand Hotel on the Ted Moynihan Memorial Walk, before returning for well-earned refreshments at the hotel.

The Jerry and Mary O’Sullivan Memorial Walk, organised by the Spa/Fenit Branch of the Kerry Hospice, took off from The Tankard at 10am and was also very well attended. Well done to all involved.

All funds will help fund the Palliatve Care Services and Units. The KHF is funding two advanced Nurse Practitioners for the next five years and will continue to fund the Specialist Palliative Care services and its needs.

The hope is to provide funds for a five bed extension to the current facility in the coming years. Scroll down for photos…

Unique Takes On Rock And Pop Classics With Postmodern Jukebox At INEC This April

.
Postmodern Jukebox is an unusual musical experience coming to the INEC in April.

AND now for something completely different.

Famed concert act Postmodern Jukebox has announced a new World Tour to celebrate the dual milestone of their 10th anniversary of touring and their 1,000th show in 2024, taking in a stop at the Gleneagle INEC Arena on April 19.

With Postmodern Jukebox, modern-day earworms and iconic pop and rock hits alike are reimagined in classic genres like 1920s jazz, Swing, Doo-wop, and Motown, and brought to life by a cast of amazing singers, dancers, and instrumentalists.

Continued below…

.

As well as unique takes on songs by Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Katy Perry and more pop icons, in the past they’ve also covered rock classics from Radiohead, The Strokes, Green Day and The White Stripes in a manner which can only described as ‘different’.

When pianist Scott Bradlee started the time-twisting musical collective from a basement apartment in Queens, NY, an online, “viral” success story was born —one that quickly led to sold out shows across North America and Europe in the summer of 2014.

The touring act received rave reviews from industry publications and world-renowned artists alike. In the years that followed, “PMJ” built a reputation as the “Saturday Night Live of Singers” by introducing audiences to dozens of exceptional musical artists —many of whom had been previously overlooked by the modern record industry — and turning them into bonafide stars.

Ten years and two billion views on their YouTube channel later, a Postmodern Jukebox show has become something of an annual musical tradition for hundreds of thousands of dedicated fans all over the world — fans that often show up dressed to the nines in their vintage best, eager to immerse themselves in the experience.

Tickets from €38.65 available from www.inec.ie or via the Gleneagle INEC Arena box office on 064 6671555.

Kerry FC Hoping For A Good Friday Night Against Wexford Side

.

Ivan Hurley previews Kerry FC’s game against Wexford FC on Good Friday night at Mounthawk Park…

KERRY Football Club will host Wexford FC on Matchday 7 of the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division tomorrow night, with kick-off at 19:45 in Mounthawk Park.

It’s the first double game weekend of the season in the league, with the Easter Bank Holiday providing the first taste of two games in 4 days in 2024.

Before Kerry’s first visit to Dublin and UCD on Monday afternoon, Kerry have the not so small task of welcoming Wexford FC to Tralee on Good Friday.

Continued below…

.

Conor McCarthy’s charges come into the game in a fine run of form. The win in the Munster Senior Cup semi-final has been backed up by three straight draws in the league, a feat that has never been achieved by the club before.

The most recent tie was probably the most impressive of them all, securing a point on the 828 km round trip to Finn Park in Ballybofey.

A fine defensive display, backed up by a man of the match performance from the clean sheet keeper Antonio Tuta will give McCarthy some confidence going into a busy period of matches which will have Kerry play all other nine teams in the league by next Friday night.

Continued below…

.

Three league points has Kerry sitting in 9th place in the league ahead of Longford Town but a win depending on other results tomorrow night could promote Kerry into the play off places.

Recent performances prove the kingdom are in a stronger position to that of 2023, but the lack of a league win to date is sure to be scrubbed from the history books sooner rather than later.

Wexford FC come into the game on a mixed vein of form. Weather troubles in Ferrycarrig have resulted in the South Easterners playing two games less than Kerry to date this season.

A 3-0 defeat to Athlone on the opening day wasn’t on Wexford’s wish list while a late goal by Patrick Ferry gave Finn Harps the victory in Wexford two weeks ago.

But these results have been backed up with an impressive win against UCD in Dublin, while a late Thomas Oluwa penalty gave them a goal victory in a 4-3 goal fest win in Wicklow against Bray Wanderers.

As reported in his pre-match press conference, Conor McCarthy says there are no fresh injury concerns in the squad.

Valerii Dolia remains on the side-lines with a foot injury. Nathan Gleeson also remains unavailable with an infection. Jack Kavanagh returned to the squad last week but a small delay in his return to play may mean he misses out on the match day 20.

Ryan Kelliher is fit and ready for tomorrow night having been forced off in Donegal last time out

“They (Wexford FC) had a very good season last year,” said Conor McCarthy. “I think they lost only 1 player, they’ve retained very well along with signing one or two as well.”

“They are going to be very strong this season, I think they will be eying up the title and not backing down for anyone. It will be a tough game, the management team is good and organised and are very structured in what they do.”

“A hard team to break down but in saying that they were involved in a bit of a goal fest last week but they still came out on the right side of it. A tough side, a tough game but we are ready and looking forward to it,” concluded Conor.

An Easter Message From Bishop Of Kerry Ray Browne

.
Bishop Ray Browne.

Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, gives his Easter Message…

“Holy Week and Easter are close to the hearts of many people in all our parishes, thank God.

Lovely to see the large numbers who come to the Cathedral on Good Friday and Holy Saturday to quietly do “The Stations of the Cross”.

For many the Cross of Jesus gives them the strength to endure the Cross in their own lives. Some parishes have a well-attended dawn Mass on Easter Sunday morning.

Continued below…

.

Witnessing the light of dawn on Easter Sunday morning symbolizes the Resurrection as the moment of proclamation of Jesus Christ as the “Light of the World”.

May Good Friday remind us of Christ’s victory over death and his gift to us all of eternal life. May Easter Sunday morning remind us that Christ is risen, Christ is alive, and He is present in our lives through the Holy Spirit.

We are reminded of the mystery of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Creator and Lord of us all.

This Holy Week we remember the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we worship him as our Savior and our Hope.

Every Easter blessing on all the people of all our parishes, and on our loved ones wherever they are in the world this Easter. Every blessing too on all for whom this is their first Easter in Ireland.” — Bishop Ray Browne

REPORT: Warriors Under 20s Through To Another National Final

.

Alan Cantwell reports on the Mens U20 National League – Semi Final held in Moyderwell last night…

Tralee Warriors 77

Limerick Celtics 76

Tralee Warriors U20 Squad. Back row from left: David Lucid, Joshua Osayanrhion, Olaf Michalczuk, Brian O’Leary, Phoenix Costello, Donal O’Sullivan, Gary Lynch, Andrew Wallace. Front row from left: Eoin Creedon, Eddie Sheehy, Eli Fitzgerald, Evan Boyle.

DEFENDING champions Tralee Warriors are back in the Mens U20 National League final for the second year in a row after their title defence put to the ultimate test and right down to the wire before they prevailed by a single point over Limerick Celtics in a pulsating semi-final at Moyderwell last night.

Celtics threatened to spoil the party for the huge crowd gathered at the home of St. Brendan’s as they got off to a flying start and led 13-5 midway through the first quarter.

Baskets from Cian Gleeson, Philip Kearney and a double each from Matthew Barry and Dennis Matthews allied to a full press had the Warriors in disarray early on.

Continued below…

.

Olaf Michalczuk hit the opening score from distance before Evan Boyle arced in the first of his five majors to cut the gap to 15-9, but Limerick pressed again and were finding scores at will through Kearney, Jack Golden, Gleeson and Kearney and despite late efforts from Michalczuk from inside and out and Eddie Sheehy with his first, the visitors held a commanding 31-17 lead at quarter time.

The Warriors fired their way right back into the contest with a much better second quarter that saw Josh Osayanrhion, Donal O’Sullivan and Sheehy combine for an early dozen points with Celtics keeping the pressure on with a major each from Kearney and Gleeson.

Osayanrhion thrilled the crowd with an incredible step to the board that sparked a Warriors run that saw them hit 10 points in row for a combination of Sheehy, Creedon, O’Sullivan and Michalczuk turning a 14 point deficit around to see the sides level at 43-43 at half time.

Continued below…

.

Eoin Creedon’s tough basket early in the third had the Warriors ahead for the first time in the game and despite a quick reply from Golden, O’Sullivan tapped in to edge the Warriors back in front.

Boyle launched his second major effort of the night but Barry replied instantly to leave the minimum between the sides with 3’00’’ left in the quarter.

David Lucid made a big impact off the bench to open his account and quickly add another and when Brian O’Leary also fired in his first on the evening either side of a slalomed special from Sheehy, the Warriors took a 61-56 into the final quarter.

The Warriors looked more likely to prevail after Osayanrhion bossed the inside exchanges to score early in the fourth and when Michalczuk followed up by arcing in a cracker from the corner the lead was suddenly out to 10.

Celtics replied in kind when Gleeson found the basket from outside and Matthews quickly followed from inside to cut the gap to 5.

However after Osayanrhion took a heavy hit and capitalised from the line, Evan Boyle lit up to knock down two stunning threes in a row to put 13 between the teams with 3’00’’ on the clock. Celtics to their credit hit the next 10 unanswered points from Golden, Gleeson and Matthews to threaten an unlikely comeback.

With 1’14’’ on the clock and the Warriors desperate for another score to settle the contest the chance fell again to Boyle who calmly nailed his third of the quarter and fifth of the night to push the Tralee side 6 ahead inside the final minute.

Celtic fought bravely to the end and another Matthew Barry three and a late trip to the line for Oliver Barry cut the gap to a single point but the Warriors were not to be denied and held on, and only just, to secure a place in the Mens U20 National League final and their chance to retain their title in Tallaght in two weeks time.

The Warriors now wait to see who they will face when Éanna host Titans in the other semi-final to be played on Bank Holiday Monday in Colaiste Éanna with tip off at 1.30pm.

Scorers:

Tralee Warriors: Joshua Osayanrhion 17, Olaf Michalczuk 15, Evan Boyle 15, Eddie Sheehy 12

Limerick Celtics: Matthew Barry 17, Cian Gleeson 16, Dennis Matthews 13

Frustration At Repeated Breaks In Water Mains In Ardfert Area

.
Cllr Deirdre Ferris.

A SINN Féin councillor has called on Uisce Éireann to confirm the expected completion date for the connection of Ardfert to the Regional Supply Scheme.

Cllr Ferris said that since Saturday, March 23, there have been three breaks in the water mains, leaving residents and businesses without water. She said this has been an ongoing issue for many years, and it is getting progressively worse.

“Uisce Éireann gave a commitment in October 2021 to start the works before the end of that year, and once again in July of 2022, to have Ardfert connected to the regional supply scheme by the end of that year,” said Cllr Ferris. “We are now in 2024, and while the work has finally started, no expected completion date has been given.”

Continued below…

.

“Buisnesses have had to close, residents have had to endure the continuous loss of water supply, and the roads are repeatedly being dug up to make the necessary repairs,” added Cllr Ferris.

“Enough is enough. Promises were made, commitments and timelines given and yet, we are still talking about this and the people of Ardfert are still enduring poor water and roads infrastructure as a result. I am calling on Uisce Éireann to give us some certainty as to when this vital work will be completed.”
