THE first John Mitchels GAA Club Social in 13 years was a sold out success last night as over 180 of the club faithful gathered to celebrate the past and present, while looking to the future with optimism.

Guests at The Rose Hotel event were treated to a welcome drinks reception, followed by a four course meal before a number of awards were presented to players from the male and female senior panels.

As part of the evening’s celebrations, the club paid tribute to the John Mitchels senior and minor players who were part of the 1962 All Ireland winning teams.

PHOTOS: John Mitchels GAA Summer Camp Is An All-Round Success

.

WHILE most GAA summer camps concentrate on either hurling or football, they took a novel approach to proceedings at John Mitchels GAA Club’s complex at Ballyseedy.

Because of the great facilities at the complex, Thomas Kearns, the Games Development Officer at the Club, devised a diverse programme of events for the kids all week.

“We’re doing football, hurling, rounders and handball to encompass all aspects of the GAA. We have the facilities here at the club for all of these and we can rotate the groups from the pitches to the hall inside during the mornings,” he said.

“The kids are really enjoying it as it gives them a mixture of activities. We are a football club, but we have hurlers with Tralee Parnells here too so we can accommodate that here too,” said Thomas. Scroll down for photos…

THEY came to be entertained and they certainly weren’t disappointed at Ballygarry House Hotel last night at the second John Mitchels GAA ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

The eleven couples performed brilliantly in front of about 650 people, including judges Michael Healy Rae TD, Cllr Toireasa Ferris, dance teacher Joanne O’Connor and beauty expert Mary O’Donnell.

The dancers from Tenacity School of Performing Arts kicked off proceedings before MC Brian Hurley introduced the opening dance which thrilled the audience, ending with an imaginative group selfie.

It was up to the public to decide the winner and in the end Karen O’Connor and Brendan Dillane were victorious and will donate their €500 prize to their chosen charities, Animal Health Net Kerry on behalf of Karen and to Kerry Hospice on behalf of Brendan.

The money raised from Strictly will be used for the development of the Club at Juvenile and Senior level. Scroll down for photos (we’ll have more later today)

U 15 Championship
We are waiting for the fixtures for U15s

U 14 Ladies:
We played Ballyduff in Round 3 North Kerry League Div 2 last Tuesday evening in Ballyseedy. A strong cross wind meant this was going to be a tough game and yes it proved just that. Mitchels played against the wind in the first half and found scores hard to come by missing quite a lot of score able chances.

Ballyduff opened the scoring with 2 points. We replied with a goal from Ava Buckley and a point before Ballyduff hit the net for their opening goal. Ballyduff added 5 more points before we added a goal from Rachel Kilgallen.

Half time score Mitchels 2-2 Ballyduff 1-8. Mitchels made a number of positional changes due to injury of Grace Myers and Julie Foley and Simi Ogungbesan working hard midfield. We began to claw back our score points from Ruth Moriarty and a goal from Ava Buckley put us in front.

Our defence were now under heavy pressure from Ballyduff with Kerry Oba in goals, Emma Carmody and Clara Callahan defending magnificently helped by Nicola heaphey Melissa Dennehy and Lisa Costello.

Further points from Rachel kilgallen , Ruth Moriarty and Ava buckley brought us level but Ballyduff weren’t giving up. Wih light now fading and they pushed back and scored a goal. Mitchels once again responded by working the ball up field where Rachel Kilgallen finished a great goal after a great run to tie the game at
4-5 to 3-8. Well done to all on Tuesday night.

Panel: Kerry Oba, Melissa Dennehy, Emma Carmody, Nicole Heaphey, Clara Callahan, Ailbhe Ryle, Lisa Costello, Julie Foley, Simi Ogungbsa, Rachel Kilgallen, Ruth Moriarty, Ava Buckley O’Connell, Aimee Somers, Grace Myers, Mikaela Marshall, Simone Hunt, Jennifer Lynch, Muirean White and Becky Fitzgerald.

Next game away to Na Gael in North Kerry League – details will be sent by teamer.

We play Ballymac at home in last North Kerry league and play Strand Road in Town League Semi Final. Dates will be confirmed so keep checking your teamers and Club Notes.

Girls U12:
The girls finished off their 2015 season in great style at a blustery Camp Ballyseedy last Wednesday evening with a hard fought win in the Town League final against a very good Kerins O Rahillys side.

In a game where both defences were on top, scores were very hard to come by which was reflected on the scoreboard at the finish. However, our girls showed that extra bit of determination and skill in the second half to get them across the line by 2 points.

Both teams were complimented by Maurice Mc Namara of the Tralee Town Board for a very sporting game as he presented the trophy to our captain Erica. The girls that played were as follows, Tara Field, Ciara Kerins, Caoimhe Leahy, Emer Murphy, Emily O Shea, Elizabeth O Connor, Taylor Rodgers, Erica O Connor, Kerry Oba, Lauren Smullen, Kate Ross, Amy Kerins, Lynda O Connor, Angel Quilligan, Emma O Donnell, Simera Hunt, Dawn McLarnon and Molly Brosnan.

As the U12 girls competitions start early each year, this game concluded our 2015 season which kicked off back in February. Both the Club and Mentors Dan, Rory, Mary and Susie would like to individually thank each girl and their parents/families for their commitment to John Mitchels U12 ladies team this season.

It was a pleasure to both coach and take you to different parts of the County during the year. The season saw us winning two trophies but the greatest satisfaction was to see each one of you improve during that time.

We hope that you enjoyed the experience as much as we did and that the facilities that John Mitchels GAA club provide have helped you and will continue to help you develop as a player into the future.

Once all the Juvenile teams have finished their year the girls will be presented with their North Kerry and Town League medals at a presentation in the club – everyone will be notified of the date well in advance.

Dingle 2-7 to John Mitchels 5-12
Best on the night were Sean Dillane and Cormac Clifford. Our game on Friday last in Castleisland District against Castleisland was cancelled due to bad weather.
Training continues on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Questions & Answers
Lyndsey Moriarty

Profile: Lyndsey Moriarty, Player John Mitchel’s Senior Ladies
John Mitchel’s Senior Player From/to: 2009 – Present
Honours Won:
John Mitchel’s Novice Championship 2010
Junior B Championship 2014
County League Div. 3 Title 2015
Player Position: Right Corner Back, Full Back

(Q): How did you become involved with John Mitchel’s Ladies?
(A): “A group of friends myself included were already John Mitchel’s supporters. We decided to approach the club with the idea of starting a ladies senior team. At first the football wasn’t taken too seriously as many of us hadn’t played before. We more or less looked at it from a fitness & social aspect. Over the years we have developed in to a very good team. Next season we will play in division 2 of the county league”.

(Q): What has been your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “I have always been a supporter of the club but it is great to be involved. I have especially enjoyed my time as a mentor. Some of the girls I helped coach at juvenile level are now playing on the senior team which is a great accomplishment”.

(Q): What has been your greatest disappointment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “My greatest disappointment came this season in the Junior A championship. Our goalkeeper sustained a head injury and the match had to be abandoned. We were then told that the game had to be rescheduled for the following evening. Unfortunately we were unable to field a team in such short notice and forfeited the match and our place in the championship”.

(Q): Can you tell me what you would consider to be your best game as a Mitchel’s Player?
(A): “I believe it was in the junior B championship final in 2014. Finuge were favourites to win in what was a very close game throughout. We put in big team effort on the night. I believe it was one of the best games we have played. For myself I was happy with my performance as I held my opposite number scoreless”.

(Q): What other sports are you involved in?
(A): “I played basketball from my school days up to last year. I am now involved in coaching with Tralee Imperial’s Basketball club. I also coach basketball and athletics in Mounthawk Secondary School. I played basketball in college with The University of Limerick. Our team won an All-Ireland college’s title”.

(Q): If you could change a rule in Gaelic football what would that be?
(A): “I think men’s and boy’s football should take some of the rules currently employed in the ladies setup. I would change the pickup so a player can pick the ball off the ground. This would help to speed up the game considerably. I would also remove the black card and replace it with the 10 minute sin-bin when a player receives a yellow card”.

(Q): What is it that you like most about Gaelic football?
(A): “I suppose it is the camaraderie. You get to mix with people previously unknown to you and become great friends. There is great team spirit and as tough as training can be we have a good bond with each other”.

(Q): What advice would you give to encourage more women to get involved with John Mitchel’s club?
(A): “Anyone wishing to become involved will get great fulfilment from it. John Mitchel’s is a very family orientated club. There is a role here for everyone I would say to anyone thinking of getting involved to go for it”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A): “The facilities here are superb and we have great numbers at juvenile level. I would like to see more people involved in the coaching side of teams. Especially former players that would have a big role to play. Hopefully we will see the continuation of lots of new players joining the club. I believe we have a very good future going forward. I wish all our teams the very best of luck for the remainder of the season”.

Mitchels In Focus: A Q&A With Robert O’Dowd

Stephen Brosnan talks to Robert O’Dowd about his time in John Mitchel’s GAA Club…

Mitchels Robert O'Dowd 1
Robert O’Dowd.

Profile: Robert O’Dowd, Manager John Mitchel’s Junior Team; John Mitchel’s Senior Player From/To: 1982 – 1990

Player Position: Left Half Back

Honours Won: Under 21 County Championship Title 1983

(Q): What has been one of your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?

(A): “For me it was winning the under 21 county championship title in 1983. It was also an accomplishment to get to the senior county final in 1989. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful on the day”.

(Q): Tell me about the 1983 U21 county championship win?

(A): “We had great players on the team. To name but a few we had Frank & Jim O Donnell, Jim was our team captain. Other players that stood out on the day were Rory Kilgallen our keeper, Pat White and Tim Leahy. It was a great squad effort not just one to fifteen.

Going into that final Spa Killarney were favorites to win. But we had great team spirit and I believe that got us over the line in the end”.

(Q): Which player(s)/people in the club would you have looked up to?

(A): “My brother Tim was a player I looked up to. He went on to win three All Ireland Titles with Kerry. Denis Fitzgerald, Michael (Fox) O’Connor and Ber Kerins were great players.

The person I believe everyone looked up to was Sylvie Mason. He gave great encouragement and guidance to all the young players. Sylvie was a great Mitchel’s man”.

(Q): Can you tell me what is satisfying to you about your sport?

(A): “John Mitchel’s GAA club is in our blood. For me this tradition goes back to my father’s time as a player.

It is not just a club John Mitchel’s is a family. It becomes part of your daily living. Most weeks you’re helping to prepare and organising training sessions and weekends the playing of matches”.

(Q): If you could change a rule in Gaelic football what would you change?

(A): “I would limit the number of hand passes that a team can give. After three or four hand passes a player should then have to kick pass. Over use of the hand pass is ruining the game. It’s great to keep possession of the ball but hand passing about with no movement forward is overkill”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?

(A): “In secondary school I played badminton. I played basketball with the Stabbers club. The Higgins family in particular Pat & John had a lot to do with that. We were very much a Boherbee outfit.

I also was involved in athletics with Clounalour AC. I joined the club when it was formed in the early 1980s. Francis Quill was our mentor and he guided the club at underage level”.

(Q): What was training like in your time as a player compared to today?

(A): “It was totally different the warm up in my time was ten laps of the pitch. Then some stretching and a game of backs & forwards. Training was hard it was a lot of running especially at the start of the season. Unlike today we had very little ball work throughout the session”.

(Q): Can you tell me something of your role as manager of the junior team?

(A): “We have a great bunch of lads playing on the junior team. Sometimes as manager it can be a challenging to field teams for matches. Especially with players who have commitments with the senior team which obviously comes first.

Players have lives outside of football and it is hard to juggle between training, games and the risk of injury. The junior team is important as it keeps everyone involved in playing football. For myself I totally enjoy it there is great satisfaction in it”.

(Q): What advice would you give to encourage more people to get involved with coaching in John Mitchel’s club?

(A): “Given the facilities we have now people shouldn’t need too much encouragement. There is something here for everyone from coaching to administration. Any person thinking of joining a GAA club should come and view our complex here at Camp Ballyseedy. But above all it is more than a club it’s a family and everyone is welcome.

I would like to mention when I was sick a few years and the club rallied around me. This gave me great encouragement and I thank all the members and supporters in the club for this”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?

(A): “It was hard for many of our older members when we moved to Camp Ballyseedy. We have a very proud tradition in Champers Club grounds. The decision was of course the correct one. Going forward I believe we have a great future.

The complex here is a great amenity for club, town & county. As a club I believe we will achieve great success in the future as we have in the past”.

JOHN Mitchels GAA club’s premises on John Joe Sheehy Road was broken into twice last week, with thieves taking alcohol from the bar on both occasions.

On Wednesday, June 10, at 4.30am, the window of the premises was broken, as was the window of Walter Lyons furniture shop in Boherbee, where a rock was used to smash the front window panel. Gardaí believe these incidents are linked.

However, the next night, the John Mitchels club was broken into by thieves and a quantity of alcohol was taken.

Then on Friday, June 12, at 2.10am, the club was broken into again and more alcohol was stolen.

Gardaí are appealing to the public for information if they saw anything suspicious on those nights in the area, to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066-7102300.
