AFTER all the rain we’ve had during ‘Confirmation season’, the sun shone brightly over Tralee on Saturday for First Holy Communions.
There were two ceremonies taking place at St John’s Church and Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church with families arriving in the fine weather for the special day.
Mercy Moyderwell pupils received the sacrament from Fr David McGovern at St John’s while Fr Amos was the celebrant at St Brendan’s for the Listellick and St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School pupils.
Thanks to their teachers, all the children were well prepared for the day and no doubt enjoyed the celebrations afterwards with their families. Scroll down for photos. TO BUY HI-RES COPIES OF PHOTOS PLEASE CALL 087-9384810…
IT was an emotional Thursday for all in the Listellick school community as they bade farewell to their much-loved Principal Annette Dineen.
Pupils, staff, members of the board of management and local clergy filled the sports hall at the school for a gathering to honour Annette who has been in Listellick for the past 22 years.
The Timoleague native took a while to get there though, first graduating from Careysfort College in Dublin back in 1983, after which she got her first teaching post in Neilstown, Clondalkin for a year.

This was followed by four year spell at Brookfield, Tallaght before heading off to London where she taught in two schools over a period of four years.
Home beckoned though and Annette came to Tralee in 1991, subbing in a number of schools in the Tralee area before securing a permanent job at Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn in 2000. A job at Listellick came up in 2002 and that’s where spent the rest of her career, becoming principal 12 years ago.
She has seen many changes in her time there, the most significant of which was the building of the new school which opened in early 2023.
At the ceremony, a number of heartfelt tributes were paid to Annette by staff and the board of management, as well as presentations made and a section of the new biodiversity garden named in her honour!
Annette told the gathering how much she has enjoyed her time in the school working with the children and staff and how she will miss them. The ceremony came to an emotional close with the pupils singing ‘Tomorrow’ from Annie.

Afterwards, we asked Annette what she would remember most about her time at Listellick.
“The community. That’s what really struck me — how they come together. When people came for the 150th anniversary celebrations you heard what the school meant to them, their memories, the positivity and love for this place.
“I’ll really miss the staff and pupils of course. They’ve kept me young, there’s an energy about kids that’s invigorating. Of course it’s tiring, but you learn so much from them too. Over the years I’ve found out about Bebo, WhatsApp, TikTok and so on!” said Annette.
There’s plenty to keep Annette busy in retirement. She’s a beekeeper, cycles regularly, swims and plays golf (“badly” she says), as well as spending time with her daughters Máire and Kate, who were there for her at the farewell ceremony.
Best of luck to Annette in the future and indeed to her successor, who has big shoes to fill!

In the morning it was the turn of 29 sixth class pupils from Listellick NS to receive the sacrament from Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne.
The Bishop stayed on for the afternoon ceremony which saw 25 pupils from Holy Family arrive in the church, while pupils from CBS The Green and Coláiste Gleann Lí were also confirmed on the day. Scroll down for photos…
IT was a busy morning at Listellick NS as the first junior infants to start at the new school building arrived to begin their schooldays.

IT was an emotional Monday evening for Listellick NS sixth class pupils and their families when they gathered for their graduation ceremony at Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church.
The pupils began their schooldays back in August of 2015 in the school on the hill and will finish up about 50 yards up the road in the brand new school, which was officially opened last Friday.
Fr Amos was the celebrant for the service and this was followed by Principal Annette Dineen praising the pupils for the wonderful young boys and girls they have become during their time at Listellick.

Teachers Anna Flynn, Micheál Ó Dubhghaill and Karen O’Driscoll introduced each pupil, reading the students’ favourite memories of their schooldays and what they want to be when they grow up, from football stars to astrophysicists.

FRIDAY was a red-letter day in the long history of Listellick NS when the new school building was officially opened by Minister for Education Norma Foley.
The opening was attended by past staff, members of the Board of Management, Bishop Ray Browne, local clergy and a number of invited guests who got a chance to view the wonderful new building.

During the ceremony, Principal Dineen said they are immensely proud of the new school which was a long time coming.
“I want to acknowledge the many people who came before the present board and myself, those who worked hard to get a new school for future generations of Listellick pupils and staff. These boards of management were long-term thinkers doing the right thing, not for their present day, but for the pupils who were not yet born,” she said.
She welcomed former Principal Micheál Ó Cinnéide and Clíodhna Murphy and her husband Gordon representing the late Principal Pádraig Murphy, whom she said worked on the early stages of campaigning for a new school.
Principal Dineen also gave special mention to former Chairperson of the Board of Management Micheál Lynch and current members Mike Roger O’Sullivan and Kay Browne whom she said worked tirelessly to get the new school.
She also thanked the pupils, staff, parents and the greater school community for their support, as well as the current board of management, especially Chairperson Frances Day.

The builders, design team, local clergy, Kerry ETB and everybody involved in bringing the project to fruition were also thanked.
Minister Norma Foley said she was honoured and delighted to perform the official opening and it was wonderful to be part of the celebration with the school community.
She said back in penal times there were four hedge schools in the local area prior to the establishment of Listellick school in 1864, which showed the appreciation for education even back then.
“It’s amazing coming from the hedge schools to where we are in 2023, so we can only imagine where we will be in the years to come. It’s a good story when it comes to education in Listellick and we should be proud to tell it. As we look to the future, we should be even more proud to add to the story and the rich legacy as we go forward,” said Minister Foley.
The grúpa cheoil provided a song to end the ceremony while Bishop Ray Browne also blessed the rooms of the building before Minister Foley cut the ribbon and unveiled a plaque to formally open the school.

A TEAM from a local national school performed brilliantly at the annual National Credit Union Schools Quiz Finals earlier this month.
The four sixth class pupils from Listellick NS, Moira Butler, Joseph Field, David Ahern and Sophie Brick, travelled to the RDS in Dublin on Sunday, April 2, and were just pipped into second place in the national final where 42 teams from all over the country took part.

THE week of Confirmation ceremonies in Tralee came to a close on Friday, with pupils from two schools receiving the sacrament.
Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church hosted two ceremonies with Holy Family and Listellick sixth classes confirmed by Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne.

IT was a manic Monday at Listellick NS as staff and pupils finally made the big move to their amazing, brand new school.
Construction began back in the summer of 2021 and the finished product is certainly worth the wait. The school body all made the walk together from the old school just 50 yards down the hill, to the big, bright, impressive new building at 9am.
In fact, they were continuing a walk up the hill which the pupils of 1969 started when they strolled from their old school even further down to the road — which stood since 1864 — to the then new site, which served generations of pupils for the past 54 years.

Principal Annette Dineen was visibly excited with the new building and facilities when we visited earlier this week.
“I can’t believe we’re here. It’s been nine years almost to the week since part of the roof blew off the old school during Storm Darwin. The children couldn’t believe it when they saw the new school as they hadn’t been up here yet. Some of the sixth class pupils said they thought they’d get lost!” said Annette.
The single-storey building has three SET rooms, eight classrooms, a large school hall, a soft-surface school yard at the back, offices and a basketball court out the front.
The entrance is also well laid out to allow parents to loop around when dropping and collecting the children.
Another nice touch has Annette naming each of the classrooms after townlands in the local area — Gurrane, Currovough, Killeen, Lisanearla, Dromtacker, Leith, Doon and Lisloose.
It’s been a long time coming but Listellick finally has the school pupils and staff deserve. Scroll down for photos…
WHILE junior infants entered the classrooms for the first time at Listellick National School this week, they’ll have to get used to new surroundings again later in the year.
This is the last time a set of new arrivals are starting their education at the old school on the hill as, all going well, the pupils will be moving across the road to the brand new school building in December once construction is completed.
Principal Annette Dineen said it was a nostalgic occasion, but they all can’t wait for the move. All the children settled in well and are already enjoying making new friends. Scroll down for photos…

“We’ll be sorry to see them go. They’re a really tight group because there’s only 21 of them. They were fantastic and all worked well together,” said Principal Dineen.
Afterwards, the students and their families retired to the pastoral centre for refreshments and a slideshow of snapshots of their time in Listellick. Scroll down for photos…
PUPILS in 5th and 6th classes in Listellick N.S. have composed a festive song called ‘Christmas on the Hill’.
“It just happened generically when the two classes were discussing recording a song or poem for their parents for Christmas,” said Principal Annette Dineen.
“They began discussing Christmas number 1’s and decided to write their own Christmas number 1! They wrote the words first with 6th class writing the first verse and 5th writing the second verse.

Both classes had input into the chorus and rap part of the song, coming up with words that would rhyme and were suitable for a Christmas song.
Their teacher Mr.O’Dubhghaill, then helped them set the words to music with the school’s grúpa ceoil accompanying the song,” said Principal Dineen.
A video was recorded with both classes featuring in the video. It was recorded just before mask wearing was recommended for senior classes in primary schools. Watch the video below…
THE weather gods were not smiling down on the site of the new Listellick school building on Friday, but nonetheless, spirits were high for a special blessing ceremony.
Cahalane Brothers construction company began work at the site — just metres up the road from the current school building — back on August 9.
Fr Amos Surungai from Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church, braved the wind and the drizzle to give a blessing in the presence of a few pupils, Principal Annette Dineen and members of the board of management.

“We have activities all day and an ice-cream van also visited. We had the fairies from Kilflynn Enchanted Festival, Zumba with Pádraig, football skills, an art workshop, drumming sessions with Martin and Podge from Active Kingdom ran team games,” said Annette.
The kids looked like they were having great fun when we arrived and the weather stayed fine so they could enjoy the outdoor activities. Scroll down for photos…
