AFTER all the rain we’ve had during ‘Confirmation season’, the sun shone brightly over Tralee on Saturday for First Holy Communions.
There were two ceremonies taking place at St John’s Church and Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church with families arriving in the fine weather for the special day.
Mercy Moyderwell pupils received the sacrament from Fr David McGovern at St John’s while Fr Amos was the celebrant at St Brendan’s for the Listellick and St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School pupils.
Thanks to their teachers, all the children were well prepared for the day and no doubt enjoyed the celebrations afterwards with their families. Scroll down for photos. TO BUY HI-RES COPIES OF PHOTOS PLEASE CALL 087-9384810…
MOYDERWELL Mercy’s first class children are challenging the people of Kerry to join them in helping to tackle climate change through their April Cool’s Day initiative – and they’ve even written to Kerry TD Danny Healy Rae to get in on the act.
The Tralee students have been working on the topic of Environmental Awareness and Care, and have entered the Solar Schools Competition.
On April 2, Moyderwell will celebrate the inaugural April Cool’s Day. The initiative involves turning off all non-essential electrics for the day; laptops, i-pads, whiteboards, photocopiers, phones and more.

The classes, taught by Mr Holly and Mr. Sheehan, want to raise awareness of how energy is used every day and become efficient users of electricity.
On the day itself, the school will have several events such as a ‘Cool Síul’ in the Town Park, poster competitions, ‘old school’ games and much, much more.
The children have been very busy on the lead up to the day, getting the word out to the community.
They have written letters to Kerry’s TDs, councillors and local media. Not only that, they are practising what they preach at home by turning off non-essential electrics and gently reminding parents to do the same.
LAST week during midterm, teachers from Moyderwell Mercy School travelled to Kopaqvaguar in Iceland to observe the Icelandic Education system and to find ways to benefit their own school in Tralee.
As part of the Erasmus programme, the teachers spent five days in Horduvallaskoli School where they gained first-hand experience for their “Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds” project.
The school’s Erasmus+ project entitled “Healthy Minds” is aimed at improving the overall Wellbeing of the school’s pupils and staff. Iceland, Italy and Norway are the countries Moyderwell teachers will visit to job shadow over the 18 month long project.

Teacher Karen O’Connor said; “the objective is to foster in the child the sense of care and respect for himself/herself and others. We also hope to help children, families, and staff develop resilience and positive life-coping skills. We will be researching and studying programmes and methods used in these countries. We are looking at SPHE/Wellbeing programmes, Home-School links and methods used in other schools with the view to reviewing and improving our P.E and SPHE policies.
“We’ve gained valuable and useful experience on these trips”, said Eoin Sayers, the 6th class teacher. “We have seen that in many ways, we have as good if not better a school system as in Nordic countries. We have a very broad curriculum, where children can experience many different aspects of life. Nordic countries tend to be very narrow in their educational focus, especially on reading and maths. We have much larger classes and we integrate children with different needs far more than they do. We are matching those countries in literacy and numeracy targets.”
Teacher Laura Daly added; “the next focus for us is mental health and wellbeing, and again the Nordic countries are held up as good exemplars. We have created links with those schools and the children write letters to each other throughout the year. My class did a joint project with a school in Sweden where we used Scratch computer programming to create games and we swapped them. We also have had skype conversations with the schools.”
Through previous Erasmus+ projects, Moyderwell Mercy has developed and maintained links with partner schools in Sweden, Finland and Norway for job shadowing and team teaching and these joint ventures have been extremely successful.
PUPILS in Moyderwell Mercy Primary School took part in the “Let’s Grow Happier” programme for five weeks this term.
Paola Kennedy devised this programme early in 2017 and since then has imparted the programme to different primary, secondary schools and private groups in the county.
This programme blends Yoga, Dance, Mindfulness , Play, Spanish , the importance of Values and it teaches young people how to express themselves through movement whilst also giving them the tools to help them relax and become more calm, confident and happier.

Paola Kennedy facilitated the programme for Moyderwell’s 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes. Students were introduced to a different activity each week which involved yoga, dance, play and mindfulness and some basic Spanish with an emphasis on breathing and self- regulation techniques, relaxation and meditation and also highlighting the importance of values, resilience, and play. There was a great positive feedback from students, staff and parents .
“This Programme is hugely beneficial to our children and subsequently our family,” said Paola. “Learning to take time for oneself and practicing relaxation and meditation techniques enhances children’s self realisation /esteem development, leading to healthy mental well being coping strategies as they continue on their journey through life. This programme should be included in everyday school curriculum to ensure an enriching holistic learning experience in mind and body.”
“The children used some of the “happy tools” that they learned about at home when they were upset or angry. It helped with self-regulation.”
Principal Moira Quinlan said: “ The students enjoyed the time allocated to learn and play during the Let’s Grow Happier programme with Paola and learned some important skills to help them to cope with day to day living.”
A FRESH morning in the Town Park provided ideal conditions for a healthy and enjoyable fundraiser involving Moyderwell Mercy Primary School pupils.
The ‘Jingle Bell Jog’ saw excited pupils, with many donning Santa hats and Christmas jumpers, do a circuit of the Park.
“The Jingle Bell Jog is a festive activity for Christmas time but it’s also part of our Active Schools Programme,” said Principal of Moyderwell Mercy, Moira Quinlan.
“Every class is involved and we’re delighted to avail of the wonderful facility of the Town Park to do one circuit, which is just over a mile. Parents are here too to join in and it’s a lovely way to begin the festive season.

We’re also using the day as a fundraiser in conjunction with the Radio Kerry Christmas Jumper Day for St Vincent de Paul, which was last Friday, but we decided to do it today,” said Moira.
There was a great atmosphere with music playing and Santa making an appearance. There was a medal for each participant which really went down well with the kids. Scroll down for photos…
IN what has become an annual trip, pupils from Moyderwell Mercy Primary School headed off to Dublin last Friday to take part in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition with the curiously titled project, ‘How Can We Launch Our Teacher Into Space?’
For the past nine years, pupils have made the journey to the RDS and had a wonderful time accompanied by Principal Moira Quinlan, and teachers Maura Jones and Eoin Sayers.
The pupils submitted this year’s entry for the Primary Schools section of the exhibition and it was accepted by the organisers.

“Múinteoir Eoin [Sayers] worked with the children during the first term and the title of the project alone got the children interested. The object was to launch Eoin into space and they were very anxious to do so,” said Principal of Moyderwell Mercy, Moira Quinlan.
“They used mathematics and conducted experiments in the yard. They incorporated a lot into the project in the making of the rockets — the launching, the scientific aspects of mass and pressure concepts and they made graphs using their mathematical knowledge,” explained Moira.
The pupils went up by train on Friday night and got a chance to see all the other primary and senior cycle projects on Saturday.
“It was a very successful trip and no sooner are we back that we’re looking at the possibility of going again next year. The Young Scientists exhibition is unique in that it showcases the best aspects of Irish education,” said Moira.
Some past pupils of Moyderwell — Ella Itsede and Tamila Khussainova — also took part representing Mercy Mounthawk this year. Ella had taken the same trip to the exhibition before when she was a Moyderwell pupil, so maybe we’ll see some of the current crop on the stage at the RDS in the coming years.
THE pupils, parents and teachers of Moyderwell Mercy Primary School left the books and pencils behind as they participated in Walk a Mile with A Smile around Tralee Town Park on Thursday.
This was an event organised in conjunction with Tralee Active Travel and Kerry County Council as part of European Mobility Week to encourage pupils and parents to take up walking or cycling as an alternative to using their cars for every journey.
The sunshine added to the atmosphere during the walk around Tralee Town Park where the boys and girls gathered fallen leaves and horse chestnuts for their classroom nature tables.
When the walk was over, parents and pupils gathered in the school hall for a very exciting school raffle. The prizes included an impressive bicycle, footballs, soccer balls, skipping ropes, swimming goggles and many more exciting items of sports equipment. Parents were also included in a raffle for Super Valu vouchers.
The school gave a huge thanks to Anna Meria Costello in Kerry County Council, the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport for supporting this initiative. Scroll down for photos…
THE junior infants at two town centre schools were well settled in when we called to take photos on Thursday morning.
Pupils from Presentation Primary and Moyderwell Mercy began their first days of school the day before and it all went very smoothly.
Presentation welcomed in 38 new boys and girls, while in Moyderwell nearby there were 52 new pupils donning the uniform.
“They settled down very well straight away yesterday,” said teacher, Maria Foley, of Presentation school.

“They seemed to have fun, they’re a great bunch and are happy out. The fact they’ve been to playschool before helps as when they come in, they know what to do and how to play with each other. A seamless transition and happy children,” said Maria.
It was a similar story in Moyderwell Mercy with young pupils settling into their new surroundings. They were really happy too in Ms Daly and Ms Ryan’s classes, smiling for the cameras as they played. Scroll down for photos…
MOYDERWELL and Presentation pupils really got into the spirit of the Tralee 800 celebrations and were rewarded by winning a schools competition.
Schools around Tralee were asked to take part in exploring the town’s history and the medieval aspect to the anniversary. The Kerry County Council-sponsored competition was run alongside this year’s festival and Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Pat McCarthy was on hand to present medals to the winners.
Around 60 third and fifth class pupils took part from Moyderwell and really showed enthusiasm for the competition, explained teacher Janeve Maguire.
“They made castles and swords, a banquet, jester hats and more. They loved it and they loved getting the medals as well!” said Janeve.
GREAT excitement filled Moyderwell during the week as Anne Culloty, Kerry Health Promotion Officer with the HSE came to announce that Moyderwell Primary School has been awarded its first Health Promoting Flag.
This is a wonderful formal recognition of all the health promotion initiatives that are run throughout the school. Anne praised the children and staff for their continued commitment to support healthy eating, well-being & exercise throughout the school.
During the past year, there has been a huge emphasis in the reduction of daily sugar intake. Pupils completed projects about the high level of sugars in every day foods and consequently made changes to their family’s shopping list. Moyderwell is very fortunate to have a free healthy lunch scheme in place which is offered to every child in the school from a company called Carambola.
Some of the other initiatives that contributed to their award include: Friends for Life Programme, Incredible Year’s Positive Behaviour Management Programme, Stay Safe Programme etc.
The children also partake in a wide range of sporting activities which include: football, hurling, soccer, rugby, swimming, athletics, dance and regular P.E. classes.
Moira Quinlan, Principal and Brenda Coughlan, Moyderwell Health Promotion Coordinator raised the new flag & each pupil from the Health Promoting Working Group received a certificate of recognition for their dedication to the project.
THE pupils from Muinteoir Eoin’s fifth class in Moyderwell Mercy Primary, Tralee had their movie premiere of their short film about the 1916 Rebellion on Wednesday night.
Aptly named “They Fought for Freedom”, the film is based on local, national and international historical events circa 1916. A capacity crowd of parents, pupils, families and friends of Moyderwell and local historians were greatly entertained at this special event in Fels Point Hotel.

Those gathered were amazed of the pupils’ abilities to research, record and edit such a production using their school iPads. The project began last October where the pupils researched and wrote a script, prioritising the events that they thought were most important.
These included Roger Casements trip to Germany, the role of women in the Rebellion and the initial public reaction to the Rising. Each scene was meticulously planned by the children working in groups and dramatised in their classrooms prior to filming the scene!
The children spent many weeks collecting and creating props. Costumes were created during art class under the guidance of parent Catherine Wall.
Filming began in early November on the school grounds and surrounding environment in Tralee. Excitement and curiosity grew as many of the public stopped to ask the children about their project as they filmed the different scenes.
They realised the importance of their work and invited another parent Private Billy Guerin into school to train them in military marching!
With a great eagerness, the children moved on to the final stage of the process using their schools iPads again which entailed editing the footage, adding sound effects, choosing appropriate background music and finally voting to choose a name for their wonderful short film!
Moira Quinlan, principal of Moyderwell Mercy Primary who spoke at the Premiere in Fels Point Hotel, praised the children of 5th class along with their teacher Eoin Sayers for their commitment to the project and for their highly professional attitude throughout the process.
According to Moira; “The children showed superb enthusiasm as they performed many roles throughout the film making process and are a shining example of the many talents within the school”.
The film can be viewed on the schools Facebook Moyderwell Mercy Primary’. Further details available by emailing mercymoyderwell@eircom.net or call 066 7124403.

IT was an extra special day in Moyderwell on Thursday as grandparents got a chance to go back to school.
The return was prompted by Grandparents Day as part of Catholic Schools Week. The initiative encourages schools to invite grandparents of their pupils to come in to national schools to visit their grandchildren.
Along with grandparents, staff and pupils of 1st, 3rd and 5th class gathered in the schools gym at 11:15am for a Mass which was followed by poems the children read out and a song they all joined in on.
OVER the last three weeks, the 2nd class pupils from Moyderwell Mercy Primary have been participating in their version of Operation Transformation.
The pupils participate in at least ten minutes of additional exercise per day, adding it to their regular P.E. classes of football and swimming. The extra activities include walking, running, skipping and dancing.
A lot of research has been done by the pupils and they had the pleasure of visiting Garvey’s SuperValu on Monday to analyse the sugar and fat content of 50 various foods that would be in a normal weekly shopping trolley.
In the results, the pupils found extremely high levels of sugar in Coca Cola, Fanta, Nutella, Cereal Bars, jams and biscuits. Sweets and chocolates were also found to have high levels of sugar.
The pupils also discovered a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables which are very healthy for our bodies.
Tim Moynihan, Assistant Manager at Garvey’s SuperValu, welcomed and praised the children for their hard work. Each child received two pieces of fruit for their super efforts.
If you would like to find out more, further results of this food survey will be available at the school’s open night this Thursday, February 4, at 7pm or on the schools website and Facebook.
THE pupils at Moyderwell had a busy end to the school year and were up to their video-making shenanigans again.
They decided to enter a Radio Kerry birthday competition and created a video of their version of the hit song Cheerleader from OMI.
“Great fun was had, and is an ideal way to finish off the school year,” said teacher Denis Griffin who helped make the video.
“Lots of history, geography and information technology were incorporated into video. The children got to dress up in medieval costumes in Kerry County Museum and even got to give Mary O’Connor, the original Rose of Tralee, her own colourful sash in the town park while shooting scenes,” said Denis.
On Monday morning, 25 children along with teachers Eoin Sayers and Denis Griffin visited Radio Kerry to present their latest music video along with a special birthday cake and a massive birthday card signed by all the pupils to the staff of Radio Kerry.
The school could be in with a chance of winning €5,000 as part of the Radio Kerry birthday celebrations which would be used to further enhance the IT equipment throughout the school.
PUPILS of Moyderwell Mercy Primary gave a huge welcome to two new ‘students’ who enrolled for the day at the school on Wednesday.
Great excitement filled the school with the arrival of twin lambs who are just nine days old from teacher, Mr Denis Griffin’s family farm in Clahane.
They began their day in Junior Infants but they learned quickly and made their way up along the school until they reached 6th class. They wished to stay a little longer with their owner Mr. Griffin in 2nd class where they learned about tens and units.
The boys and girls of 2nd class used FaceTime on their school ipads to see ‘Mommy Sheep’ at home on the farm. Everyone enjoyed the experience and the lambs who were named Billy and Bailey by the children went home to their ‘Mommy’ at 2.40pm.
THE staff at Mercy Moyderwell Primary School have been putting their technology skills to good use recently when they produced a new video promoting the school.
It’s all part of Moyderwell letting people know about their school in the heart of the town. About 50 people attended their open day last Tuesday and saw the video presentation.
It is a move that shows their continuing dedication to embracing technology is alive and well. The video was created by teacher Denis Griffin using iPads that the children use in the school.
It features an insight into all the different types of work done in all the different classes with narration by the teachers throughout.
Parents of present and past pupils also appear in the 20-minute long presentation as they highlight the benefits of an education there.
