It’s been three months since Elysha Brennan’s life changed as she knew it when she was chosen to represent the marvellous class of 2015 as the Rose of Tralee. Elysha outlines her experience to date…
From that night on the 18th of August, it has been the most incredible and formative journey of my life. And we really are only getting started.
Tralee was the most magical and special experience of my whole life, I made bonds with my fellow Rose sisters which will last a lifetime and lived moments that will stay in my memory forever.
A definite highlight shortly after being crowned, was ticking one of the BIG things off my bucket list and that was appearing on the Late Late Show.
Continued below…
Looking back, it is so surreal that I was given that amazing opportunity, and was interviewed on the couch of a show I watch religiously every Friday night.
I was welcomed so warmly and with such excitement in my home county of Meath, there were such celebrations and I was made to feel so special. The sense of home county pride in Meath was palpable at my homecoming, and it was an honour to share it with family, friends and fellow Roses and Rose Escorts.
Travelling to Kolkata with The Hope Foundation has been the highlight of my Rose of Tralee journey thus far.
The Hope Foundation are an absolutely wonderful charity that care for and educate street and slum children in Kolkata, India. It opened my eyes to the struggles and challenges some people face on a daily basis, I came home with a new found and deep rooted perspective and gratitude for all the blessings I’ve been given in life.
I have met so many extraordinary people throughout my time as the Rose of Tralee, I have become an Ambassador for Aoibheann’s Pink Tie – a paediatric oncology charity based out of St John’s ward Crumlin.
They offer practical support and advice to families going through childhood cancer. I can’t praise the work that Jimmy Norman and Mick Rochford do. They are two of my personal heroes.
I have been privileged enough to have met some of the Aoibheanns Pink Tie heroes and princesses & have learned so much from their courage, bravery and ability to smile through pain and suffering.
I am looking forward to spending Christmas this year with family and friends. Christmas is a very special and sacred time in our house, it means so much to be all together under the one roof and get to spend some much needed quality time with one another.
Life can be so busy and everyone is pulled in different directions, so Christmas is an amazing time to regroup and come together to celebrate the year we have had & all the blessings we have been given.
The prospect of the new year excites me and I am planning on cherishing and making the most of my time as this year’s Rose of Tralee, I have five more oversees visits planned, which is absolutely fantastic.
My passport will be well stamped come August. My aim for this year is to be able to look back in August, on my time as the Rose of Tralee and know in my heart I gave it absolutely everything I had & did all the things I set out to do!
I wish everybody & their families a special and wonderful Christmas & a healthy, happy and prosperous new year!
• The search to find the 2016 Rose of Tralee will commence in earnest on Women’s Christmas, Wednesday 6th January, when the 2015 Rose, Elysha Brennan and RTÉ Presenter, Dáithí Ó Sé announce details of next year’s selection process.
THE new Rose of Tralee charmed the nation with her vivacity, courage, honesty and singing talents, when she appeared on one of her favourite TV shows on Friday night.
And she ended up winning a car for a Tralee woman!
Elysha Brennan appeared on the first The Late Late Show of the new season where she spoke to Ryan Tubridy about the Rose of Tralee competition, her battle with cancer a few years ago, her love life (or lack thereof) and about encouraging young girls to live in the moment.
But she’s already showing how good she is for Tralee people, by picking out an entry from Jackie Fraher from Tralee to win a Renault Clio in the Late Late Show’s first competition of the season.
Elysha told the audience during the interview about the treatment for Hodgkins Lymphona, the effect it had on her physically, mentally and emotionally and coming out the other side of it.
She also told host Ryan Tubridy how she wanted to be an advocate for living in the moment, especially for young teenage girls.
“I’d love to be an advocate for young women,” she told Tubridy. “I just see that generation and what they’re growing up with and it’s all about selfies and how many likes you have, instead of going out and enjoying yourself and being present in what you see. I think we’ve lost the art of being present and engaging with people,” she said.
“Being comfortable in your own skin. I always say this but, you don’t have a soul, you are a soul and you have a body. The hair, the make up and the dresses, you know, we all feel good [in them], but what’s important is in your soul, being kind and generous and warm to people,” she said.
She was also asked how she felt about becoming the Rose and about some commentators’ perceptions of the competition as being anachronistic.
“I suppose the Rose of Tralee, in my eyes, has always been relevant,” she answered. “It’s changed and moved with the times and constantly evolving…this whole idea of the ‘lovely girls’ competition; we are lovely, we’re all so strong, we’re all so smart, intelligent, driven young women, who are game-changers and trailblazers. I think there is nothing these girls can’t do,” she said.
When asked about her love life she had this to say.
“My whole love life is like a string of awkward moments. I’m just so unlucky in love. I suppose Medicine is my boyfriend, I just don’t have time,” said Elysha.
She’s also releasing a single in aid of Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, a charity offering support for children going through cancer in Ireland and sang ‘Bright Blue Rose’ on the show.
ELYSHA Brennan barely had a chance to catch forty winks in the early hours of this morning before her first busy day as Rose of Tralee began.
First the Meath lady visited the studios at Radio Kerry and then it was down to the Town Park for the traditional photoshoot in the Rose Garden.
Elysha (very) patiently posed for the many photographers present followed by TV and press interviews, but she still found time to chat to onlookers, sign autographs and pose for selfies.
Then she was whisked off again to perform a number of engagements, in what is sure to be a whirlwind year for the 22 year old.
THERE was a great crowd and atmosphere around the town park today as groups of families, friends and couples meandered relaxedly through the various stalls and entertainment pieces taking place.
One such event that always proves quite popular and that again garnered quite the level of support and following was the annual ‘Bonny Baby’ competition that saw queues of parents eagerly and proudly lined up to present their little ones to the judges.
With medals on offer to all those taking part, there was a relaxed feel about the day as all gathered enjoyed a day out and a few laughs in the sun after the competition aswell and in the end, that’s all you can really ask for.
A DELIGHTED but shocked Elysha Brennan faced the press just minutes after being named Rose of Tralee and had a special mention for a woman she met in the palliative care unit in Tralee today.
The Meath Rose, a 22 year old student from Bettystown, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during her repeat Leaving Certificate year when she was 19.
Continued below…
She has been two years in remission but having undergone chemotherapy and radiation therapy at the time.
Tonight though, she couldn’t have been happier.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I dream I would be sitting here. It’s just been such an incredible experience in my life. I suppose I’ve experienced the lowest of lows and this is the highest of highs,” she said.
“To become a Rose was my Rose of Tralee. This has surpassed any sort of dreams or hopes or aspirations I’ve ever had. I went into this looking at it as an experience and it’s certainly been the best experience of my life,” she said
When asked did she pay attention to the favourite tag she said: “Well my dad was telling everybody to bet on me, but I wouldn’t take any heed of that.”
And what of her further studies?
“To be honest I’m living in the moment and I haven’t even thought that far ahead.”
She also mentioned a lady she met on Tuesday afternoon.
“I’d like to mention a woman I met today named Helen in Palliative Care in Kerry Hospice. I suppose speaking to her, everything happens for a reason. I cried for an hour and it kind of brought me back to the earth and I realised that I’m here for a reason and I knew that the Rose of Tralee was brought into my life for a reason,” she said.
Elysha Brennan, a 22 years old Bettystown native looked shocked but delighted as her name was announced by Dáithí Ó Sé on stage tonight.
The second year medical student in the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin was emotional as she told the audience how proud she was to be name this year’s winner and paid tribute to the other Roses.
WHILE the Kerry Rose has had great support locally, there’s another few contestants this year who’ve had had the backing of people from around the county.
The Darwin Rose, Caitriona Brennan, has relations in Castlemaine; Chelsea Thursby Milovanovic, the South Australia Rose’s grandfather came from Boherbee; Boston and New England’s Sarah Hogan is practically half a Ballymac woman (her dad Martin Hogan is a native of the parish), Toronto Rose Erika Healy’s dad is also from Tralee and Aisling Hillary of London has strong Castleisland connections.
But Perth Rose, Denise Lynch, has the closest connections to Tralee as she was born and reared in Ballyseedy. We asked her how the whole week has gone for her when we caught up with a few of the Roses on a visit to Jigsaw Kerry on Tuesday afternoon.
“It’s been unbelievable. Even coming into Tralee on the bus I was handed the microphone, to give a tour of Tralee. I did not ever think I would be coming home as Perth Rose, let alone giving a tour to 31 ladies competing for the Rose of Tralee,” said Denise.
Her family, dad Clement mum Mary and sisters Sarah and Adrienne, as well as other friends and relatives are having a great time supporting her.
“They’re having a ball! They’re having more fun than myself I’d say. They’re seeing the festival in a whole new light now. They’re looking at it from an insider’s point of view, going to the ball and getting involved in all the activities,” she said.
For the London Rose, Aisling Hillary, it’s also a homecoming of sorts as her dad is from Castleisland.
“It’s been such a roller coaster ride. From start to finish, it’s been all positive and I’d encourage any young woman who’s thinking of applying to do it. You make some great friends,” said Aisling.
So how did she feel her interview with Dáithí went last night?
“It was really good, I was nervous because I was on first but once I’d done it I was excited because I could watch the rest of the girls,” said Aisling.
While on their visit to Jigsaw, the Roses heard about the great work that Jigsaw Kerry do providing mental health services to young people.
“We’re delighted that the Roses are here today to hear about the services we provide,” said Jimmy Mulligan, Project Manager at Jigsaw Kerry.
“We’re a free service for young people between the ages of 12 and 25 who would present with mental health needs. It’s important that we raise the our profile. We had a great representation in the Rose of Tralee 10k with over 30 people running wearing our shirts,” said Jimmy.
IT’S been an incredible week for all the Roses and our own Kerry Rose, Julett Culloty, is having a ball!
We had a quick chat with the Kilcummin lady about her week when we called into Jigsaw Kerry, where some of the Roses were visiting on Tuesday afternoon.
“I had a busy couple of months in the lead up to the Festival, but since it kicked off it’s been amazing. We’ve been to beautiful towns around Ireland for the past week and a half and the reception we got was absolutely incredible,” she said.
So how did it feel coming down Denny Street during the parade on Saturday night?
“That was incredible, really magical. It was one of the things I was really looking forward to and it really was outstanding. I didn’t realise the volume of people that would be there so that was incredible to witness. I was with the London Rose and we had great craic,” said Julett.
Julett performed really well in her interview with Dáithí and was happy to get that part done quickly.
“I was praying to God all week that I was going to be on the Monday night to get it over with so I could relax and watch the rest of the girls. But I was happy with how it went and I’m really looking forward to tonight,” she said.
She’s also had great support from her family in Kilcummin over the last few days. I’d say they’re enjoying it?
“Ah they are. I had a good crowd of supporters there last night. I’m such a home bird so having been away for a week I was delighted coming back to see them,” she said.
THERE were a lot of stars around town over the past week for the Festival, but one that went largely unnoticed was a BAFTA-winning actor who was enjoying the atmosphere.
Jack O’Connell, the star of ‘Skins’, ’71’ and the lead actor in ‘Unbroken’, which was in our cinemas over Christmas, was in town with his sister Megan.
Jack, whose father Johnny hailed from Ballyheigue, was recognised by fan Róisín O’Regan from Caherslee in The Abbey Inn on Friday night.
Róisín and her friends, Amy Shalvey and Patrick Walsh hung out with Jack for a while and he told them he was on a short holiday and intended on going to Dingle on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Derby born and raised actor is proud of his Kerry roots and was tweeting good luck to the Kerry team last September.
He won a BAFTA Rising Star Award this year after great turns in ’71’ and ‘Unbroken and is tipped for even better things in the future.
He wasn’t the only famous actor enjoying Kerry hospitality in the past week.
Dominic West, best known as McNulty in the acclaimed HBO series ‘The Wire’, popped by for a seaweed bath in Ballybunion last week.
TRALEE architect Shane Kenny (23) is the 2015 Newbridge Silverware Rose of Tralee Escort of the Year.
Shane’s fellow Rose Escorts and this year’s 32 International Roses voted for the winner before Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result in the Festival Dome in front of live on RTÉ One.
In a year when the Rose Escorts had the pleasure of chaperoning three Roses instead of being paired with one Rose, Shane was the Rose Escort to the Galway, Louth and Meath Roses.
A native of The Spa, Tralee, Shane plays football for his local club Churchill GAA, and writes for popular sports website Pundit Arena occasionally.
He is a member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, and has performed at Siamsa Tíre Theatre in a number of different pantomime roles and sketches recently.
The General Manager of Newbridge Silverware, Martin Kilduff, presented Shane with a wonderful prize consisting of a 44-piece silver-plated canteen engraved with his family crest, a stylish Gents collection of Newbridge Jewellery including Rose of Tralee Cufflinks, bracelet, watch, leather belt and wallet and a cheque for €1000.
Shane Kenny, the only Kerryman among this year’s group of 32 Rose Escorts, said: “I was delighted to represent Tralee and Kerry in what has been another fantastic Festival.”
Shane has completed the Ring of Kerry Cycle and two Toughathlons, raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society in the process.
A quiz buff, Shane has competed at All-Ireland level with his parish team. He aspires to undertake his Masters in Architecture in the coming year.
Two of his fellow Rose Escorts, Darren Hughes (29) and Ross McAuley (26), both from Dublin, were shortlisted in the top three following the vote.
Nearly 200 men aged between 21 and 30 applied to become Escorts at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival and following a detailed interview process, the final 32 were selected to take part in a Boot Camp weekend in Kenmare to help them prepare for a busy week in Tralee.
Applications are now being accepted to become Rose Escorts in 2016 and full details are available fromwww.roseoftralee.ie.
IT was another memorable night at the Rose of Tralee Festival annual parade on Saturday as thousands lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the glamorous Roses.
Just before 9pm, the parade led by Dáithí Ó Sé and current Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh, made its way down Boherbee and to the town centre with Dáithí geeing up the crowd and getting the atmosphere going.
They were followed by colourful participants in amazing costumes and of course the Roses themselves who waved and danced their way to the top of Denny Street where MC for the evening, John Drummey and Elaine Kinsella provided a running commentary on the participants and interviews with the Roses.
It was then party time as Roses, Escorts and Rosebuds danced and enjoyed the fireworks which provided a spectacular end to the night’s proceedings.
We were there taking photos and filming the event so watch the highlights of the parade in a 2½ minute video, followed below by images from the night (we’ll have loads more tomorrow)…
HUNDREDS of fans were out in force on Friday night to watch one of the best known singers in the country rock his third straight appearance at the Rose of Tralee Festival.
Nathan Carter blew Denny Street away last night with his typical energetic performance for almost three hours as he performed well into the night and belted out the crowd favourites in ‘Wagon Wheel’ and ‘King of The Road’.
The singer drew great cheers after welcoming three children on stage with him to perform a song with him towards the end of his set and by the sounds of it, he might have a few competitors on his hands in a few years.
Crowds of fans, young and old were left delighted with the performance and no doubt hoping that the 25 year old singer will be back again next year.
Check out an interview with the star from the girls at ‘SocialBox TV’ and photos of fans at the concert below…

SOME lucky children seized a great opportunity to meet this year’s Roses in the Wetland’s when the selection were given a civic reception on Friday afternoon.
The Roses, were only too happy to stop, chat and taking photos with kids at the Wetlands even though they were taking a break from the engagements they had earlier on in the day.
First they met in the Town Park, for the official opening of the Rose Walway. Then they travelled the short distance up the road to the Bons for a visit, before making their way to the Wetlands for a civic reception.
THERE was great excitement on Friday when the Roses finally arrived at base camp aka the Fels Point Hotel.
A jazz band entertained the crowds as many gathered to see the Roses walk on the red carpet while the Rosebuds and Escorts formed a guard of honour.
The 32 ladies were greeted by Dick and Eibhlín Henggeler of the Fels Point Hotel before getting settled in and preparing for the glamorous Rose Ball on Friday night.
IT was a poignant moment for the Henggelers and indeed the extended Rose of Tralee family when the new Rose Walkway was officially opened on Friday morning in the Town Park.
The Rose contestants, local politicians, Kerry County Council officials and a good crowd present, watched as Dick and Eibhlín Henggeler and the Mayor of Tralee, Tom McEllistrim, unveiled a beautiful monument to mark the opening of the walkway, dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Moriarty Henggeler, the 2011 Washington DC Rose who passed away last year.

The new Rose Walk links the Riverside Walk at Fels Point to the Town Centre, leading visitors through the Rose Garden, and the many commemorations in the park to the Rose of Tralee, including the life size statue of the original Rose, Mary O’Connor, and the author of the Rose of Tralee ballad, William Pembroke Mulchinock, as well as the Rose Wall of Honour.
The Henggelers recently bought the Fels Point Hotel and Dick spoke of the family’s gratitude at the naming of the walkway in their daughter’s memory.
“I would like to say how Eibhlín and I and our family are honoured that the town of Tralee has given Dott this tribute. We’re truly touched by that,” said Dick Henggeler, speaking to those present.

He also said after Dott took part in the 2011 festival, she wanted to be a part of it every year.
“Now she has been given this tremendous part to play, to be here welcoming the Roses on the walk. That’s what Dott really would have liked to have done,” he said.
“We are highly committed to the Rose of Tralee and we too want to play our part and we want to see the hotel as the flagship for the Rose of Tralee. I also want to thank the people of Tralee who have embraced the Rose of Tralee and make it better and better every year,” said Dick.
Managing Director of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, spoke about Dott and the effect she had on others.
“The spirit of the Festival was alive and well in a great young woman who came to us in 2011. She was full of devilment, full of life, she was an optimist and a people person. It’s just incredible that her parents have come back to Tralee and said in Dott’s memory we’re going to keep the spirit of the Rose Of Tralee alive and we’re going to find a way of helping Tralee to continue to celebrate every great thing Tralee has to celebrate,” he said.
Continued below…
“Despite the fact that Dick and Eibhlín have been barracked in Killarney for most of their 37 years of visits to Ireland, but we have converted them to being Tralee Citizens No.1,” he said, tongue-in-cheek.
Mayor of Tralee, Tom McEllistrim said Dott “epitomized all that was great about the Rose of Tralee, building relationships with other Rose contestants throughout the world and promoting all that is good about Kerry with those that have left our shores over the centuries but keep the spirit of Kerry alive in their own communities”.
All speakers paid tribute to Kerry County Council for the work they have done for the festival and it’s clear the Town Park is looking better than ever.
The Roses really enjoyed themselves, staying around after the ceremony to pose for photos and sign autographs for the public.
THE Perth Rose will feel pretty much at home this Friday when she comes to Tralee this Friday because, well, it is home!
Denise Lynch is a native of Ballyseedy and emigrated to Western Australia four years ago with her partner, Diarmaid Casey from Ballymac.
The 27 year old and currently completing a Bachelor of Science Degree (Nursing) at Curtin University in Perth but also has over eight years’ experience as a beauty therapist/tutor.
Continued below…
“We ended up in Perth four years ago and we haven’t looked back,” said Denise, talking to us from Leitrim where the Roses were staying on Wednesday while on their tour of Ireland.
So how did she get involved?
“I was approached by one of the organisers and there were 13 of us in the contest. We went through many activities – a bit like the Rose of Tralee contest itself – and at [a function at] the end of May I was announced as the winner,” she explained.

It’s set to be a great homecoming as her family and friends get set to greet her in Tralee.
“My parents, Mary and Clement, and sisters Sarah and Adrienne are delighted. I have aunts and uncles coming from America and from England and friends coming from all over Ireland,” she said.
Denise said there’s a very tight knit Kerry and Irish community in her adopted city.
“I walked into an Irish bar recently and I heard somebody call “Denise” from the side of the bar. It was a friend of mine that I had grown up with all my life and was in school with, so it’s amazing the amount of Irish people over there,” she said.
Denise is really enjoying the week so far and has bonded straight away with the other Roses.
“It’s been absolutely unbelievable. We’ve all the same interests and there’s really no competition there between us. We really have a laugh together and will be delighted for whoever wins,” she said.
LOOKS like it’s a fine day in Dublin too today as the Roses enjoyed an ice-cream with the man who’ll be asking the questions next week.
Kerry man Dáithí Ó Sé met the 32 Roses for the annual photo-shoot at the RTE studios in Montrose and it looks like they had a rare oul time in the capital. The genial TV presenter from Dingle manned the ice-cream truck to dish out the 99s to the ladies.
The Roses will be travelling around the country over the next few days before arriving in Tralee on Friday morning.
CLEARLY Mother Nature didn’t get the memo that at this time of year the sun is supposed to be shining.
It’s really hard to believe that the Rose of Tralee festival begins in a few days.
I know that there will be knockers who come out of the woodwork every year but whatever anyone thinks of it, the festival brings with it a great positive buzz and much needed boost to the local economy.
There is lots for everyone to do and this culminates in the selection nights on Monday and Tuesday night live from the Dome.

I really do have a certain degree of empathy for the girls vying for the title this year as they have huge boots to fill. I am not insinuating that the current Rose of Tralee has big feet or anything, it is just that I can’t remember there ever being a girl who has been so popular.
She has embraced her role and is popular with young and old from toddlers to pensioners, everyone loves Maria. She has the entire package with her beauty and own style, she will certainly be remembered for all of the right reasons in years to come.
Friday night the festival kicks off with the Rose Ball and I believe that it is sold out and this is not surprising as for anyone who has ever been will know that it really is a great, action packed night.

Award winning hair salon Sean Taaffe will have a pop-up salon in the Herbs And Roses Spa at the Fels Point Hotel, from Friday to Tuesday during the festival, for ladies who wish to get a helping hand in looking über-styled.
Check out their Facebook page as there is some incredible offers and book early as I’ve no doubt that as always the salon will be a very busy one – 066 7199118. I have mentioned before about the importance of having your hair done by a professional for a big night out.
Sean Taaffe’s vintage up styles and glamour waves are really stunning and can be the difference in an outfit looking good and looking great. Every year at Kerry Fashion Week, Sean’s work causes a stir on the catwalk, from colour to cuts his work is amazing.
Over in Aura at CH Chemists, they have a great August special of 20% off manicures and pedicures, while at Expose Beauty Lounge in Mounthawk, you can get your hair and make-up done by their expert staff for €50.

YOU know the Festival is only days away when you see photos of Roses in Croke Park.
The Rose of Tralee 2015 contestants have gathered in the capital where they begun their five day tour of Ireland before arriving at the Fels Point Hotel next Friday afternoon.
This morning they met up at Dublin Airport before being whisked off for a tour of GAA headquarters where a few of them got their hands on the Sam Maguire and Liam McCarthy cups.
Kerry’s Julett Culloty got her hands on Sam, but Aisling Finnegan, the Dublin Rose tried to pry it from her.
EARLIER in the week we told you about the South Australia Rose and her connections to the Boherbee area of town (click here for story).
Well James Hogan got in contact with TraleeToday.ie to tell us about Ballymac’s strong link to Sarah Hogan, who will be representing Boston New England in the upcoming competition and her connection to a hit show on Netflix.
He says that Sarah’s dad, Frank is a native of the parish.
Continued below…
“Frank Hogan grew up there played football for Ballymac and later with Austin Stacks,” said James.
“Frank was involved in the car business in Tralee for a number of years having started with Duggans Garage in Ashe Street in the 70s. He emigrated to Boston in the late 80s,” said James.
Sarah is an actress and model who majored in theatre and media studies in the New School University in New York and also studied at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin.
James says Sarah has had minor roles on several TV shows including ‘Law And Order’ and the hit Netflix show ‘Orange Is The New Black’ (see tweet below).
“A big crowd from Ballymac will be in Sean Óg’s Bar on the Saturday of the festival to cheer her on,” said James.
Here’s a tweet from Sarah back in June reminiscing about her time on ‘Orange Is The New Black’…
WE know who the people of Boherbee will be supporting in the upcoming Rose of Tralee competition.
Mitchels woman, Claire Connolly, got in touch with us to tell us about this year’s South Australia Rose, Chelsea Thursby-Milovanovic’s connections to Tralee. She takes up the story…
“Chelsea’s granddad, Paddy Connolly, was born and reared in Moyderwell, he worked as a mechanic in Blennerhassett’s Garage in Boherbee until he emigrated to the UK (mid 50s), where he met his wife Nora from Limerick.
Continued below…
They emigrated to Australia in 1965 on a £10 ticket. He never returned home and died in Australia in 1982 aged 47.
Paddy had one brother Noel ‘Doc’ Connolly (Marian Park) and one sister, Mairead Casey, who lived in Killarney (both deceased). Through Noel’s wife Mary (also deceased), the family re-connected through Facebook around 2010.
Chelsea and her mum, Siobhain Connolly-Milovanovic, visited Ireland for the first time in July 2014, here they had a family reunion and met up with all their Connolly and Casey cousins.
During the visit the family went on trips to the Ring of Kerry and did a tour of Killarney, they also went to Killarney Races. At the races, Chelsea met the then Kerry Rose, Mary Hickey, who planted the idea of entering the competition in Chelsea’s head.
Chelsea will hold onto the Boherbee connection during the festival as she is twinned with The Ballymac Bar.
She will have a will have lots of support from her cousins during the festival, 30 family members are going to the Rose Ball and many more will attend the selection nights. Due to family connections, she will also have a big John Mitchels and Dr Crokes following.”
Continued below…
So then, looks like the strains of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and the ‘Rose of Tralee’ will be wafting from the bars up in Boherbee for the duration of the festival.
As the festival is less than two weeks away, yesterday we brought you 16 contestants in the Rose of Tralee International Festival (click here for previous story). Now here’s the rest…

My favourite type of dance is Irish dancing as I started at the age of six and just fell in love with it. I never thought in a million years I would get to be the Louth rose at the age of nineteen and I am absolutely delighted to have this amazing opportunity.
MEATH ROSE – ELYSHA BRENNAN
My name is Elysha Brennan, and I am honoured to be this year’s Meath Rose. I am 22 years old and from the beautiful coastal village of Bettystown. I spent an amazing 6 years at Gormanston College Co Meath where I graduated with a student of the year medal.
I am a second year medical student in the Royal College of Surgeons Dublin. I adore what I am studying although during exam season I always consider alternative career options , such as joining the circus.
I have a keen interest in working with children and am involved with the RCSI Paediatric Society. I have also volunteered for the Irish Cancer Society, and plan to partake in a volunteer mission with a local parish in Lourdes.
I have been involved with musical theatre from an early age, and have a passion for all things song and dance. I have been lucky enough to have taken part in the Olympia Theatre Dublin Christmas pantomimes and a Michael Jackson tribute show.
I made a bucket list two years ago and am slowly ticking things off, including visiting the Statue of Liberty in New York, Greek island hopping and nowbecoming the Meath Rose.
LAST week we told you about the festival lights being put up on the streets of Tralee, but now the festival countdown has really begun.
The good people at the Fels Point Hotel put up some photos yesterday of the start of the erection of the Dome and just this morning we took a drive out there and saw that the roof is already up. The sight of this truly triggers the countdown to the start of the festival.

It won’t be long now until the Rose Ball, the selection nights, the start of school, Kerry in the All-Ireland final…hang on, we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves!
THE ROSE of Tralee Maria Walsh is gearing up to push herself to the limits over the next few weeks, all in the name of charity, as she prepares for the inaugural ‘Trek2Tralee’ event.
And local runners are being encouraged to come out and run with her on the home stretch into Tralee.
Maria will be joined by a team of fellow athletes as they attempt to run, walk and cycle the 242km distance down to the Kingdom.
Leaving Shrule in Mayo on Tuesday, August 11, she will be hoping to arrive in Denny Street just in time for the start of this year’s festival on Friday, August 14.
Along the way, she will be raising money for three charities in ‘Barretstown’, ‘Development Perspectives’ and the ‘Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation’ with members of the public invited to donate anything they can.
Runners are required to donate to the event before they can make the run, and will have to bring their donation receipt with them on the day of the run, August 14.
They can either run from the 11 mile distance from Castleisland into Tralee, or the much shorter distance of 3 miles, meeting at the Earl of Desmond Hotel.
For those looking to find out more about the ‘Trek2Tralee’ event or indeed those wishing to donate to the charities, you can do so through the website here.
OK, earlier we brought you footage of the 1974 Rose of Tralee Festival from the British Movietone archive, but here’s an even better archive film.
This time it’s from the 1977 Festival won by Orla Burke from Waterford. The narrator talks about the Festival being worth £2m to the economy while there’s some great film of the donkey derby, the parade featuring elaborate floats, Ardfert GAA youngsters and explosive motorcycle action in the Town Park.
