A SUNNY Friday morning provided perfect conditions for a novel, energetic fundraiser at Scoil Nuachabháil.

Every pupil in the school took part in a Marathon Relay event which saw them take a baton and sprint laps of the playground in a relay to make up the 26.2 miles.

“We contacted Ciaran Slane of Fitter Younger who is down here to oversee the event,” said Principal Mick Bolger.

“We’re trying to raise funds for four gardens — a sensory garden, a vegetable garden, a biodiversity garden and a glasshouse/polytunnel-type garden,” he said.

“Pupils were given sponsorship cards and we’re hoping to raise between €4,000 and €5,000 from the event which will do a lot of good for the school,” said the Principal.

There was a fantastic atmosphere too and the pupils were really going at it to get the best time they could.

“We’ve been doing 15 minutes a day running since the start of the year to improve their skills and it’s really showing as they’re flying around the yard,” he said.

Parents also showed up to cheer on the pupils and help with refreshments, while an ice-cream van was also on hand as a reward for the children’s (and the teachers’) efforts.

It was wonderful morning for the community and the marathon was completed in a very respectable two hours and 26 minutes.  Scroll down for photos…

REHEARSALS were in full swing on Wednesday afternoon at Ballygarry House Hotel for the Scoil Nuachabháil pupils Christmas concert taking place later that evening.

Principal of the school in Ballymacelligott, Mick Bolger, said the pupils have put in a fantastic effort over the past few weeks and he was confident they would put on a great show for their families.

“We have Christmas songs and offerings from musicals such as ‘The Greatest Showman’. The kids came up with the suggestions so it’s really their show with input and guidance from their teachers. The SNAs and teachers were also working overtime on the costumes which look wonderful. The kids have been fantastic today and are putting in a great effort, even though they’re getting a little tired, they’re pushing through!”

The pupils did not disappoint either and later that night Ballygarry was packed to see an amazing show of singing, dancing and, of course, a version of the Nativity. Scroll down for photos…

Scoil Nuachabháil Pupils Produce Dignity Packs For Homeless

.

SCOIL Nuachabáil pupils have shown their awareness of the homeless crisis in Ireland today by producing ‘Dignity Packs’ for local homeless people.

Dignity Packs contain an item of clothing, hygiene products such as toothbrush, soap etc., as well as other items like plasters and cotton buds as well as small food parcels containing energy bars and sweets.

“When the idea was first suggested last September, our Student Council immediately decided to lead the school effort in putting together 30 Dignity Packs,” said school principal, Mick Bolger.

“Children in the school are very aware of the problem of homelessness in Ireland. There are new statistics and appalling stories of Irish people suffering, on media platforms every day. We hope that our small contribution will make a difference to someone this Christmas,” he said.

“We approached some local businesses with a view to coming on board by donating some of the items we needed. We also decided to ask our families for a monetary contribution to purchase the items of clothing for the packs. Our Student Council sourced the items and worked out how to get the best value for money for donations received,” he added.

Mick, on behalf of the school in Ballymac, expressed gratitude to Breda Crowley in Castleisland and James Crowley in Moyderwell, Tralee for their very generous contributions, to Garvey’s Castleisland for all their help and donations and to the school community for its support.

Over the next number of months, members of the Defence Forces will distribute a handmade Tricolour and a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic to more than 3,000 national schools across Ireland.

“It’s great to get out and do something we don’t normally do and see all the schools,” said Gunner Sean Murphy.

“The children are definitely prepared before we come and it’s great that they’re learning about what’s going on next year and what it means to everyone.” said Gnr Murphy

At Scoil Nuachabháil, pupils welcomed the two army men with a guard of honour with each of the 150 or so school children waving a tricolour.

The kids got a chance to quiz the two men about the army and the history of the nation. Questions ranged from “where do you keep the guns?” to “are your uniforms itchy?”

To round off the visit, the proclamation was read out followed by a rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann.
