THURSDAY was a historic day for Tralee Credit Union as, after 50 years, the name was changed.
It was decided to rebrand it as Cara Credit Union as there are now three offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin and the directors felt the name “Tralee Credit Union” is not fully inclusive of these towns and hinterlands.
The motion to change the name was passed by a two-thirds majority at their AGM back in December.
It’s all part of the 50th anniversary celebrations at the branch. There was an open day held yesterday with entertainment in all three offices. There was plenty of prizes on offer including a members car draw which was won by Breda O’Callaghan from The Spa.
TRALEE Credit Union Ltd reached a milestone last Sunday when it officially turned 50.
To kick start their 50th year celebrations St. John’s Church in Tralee dedicated the 12 noon Sunday Mass to Tralee Credit Union’s former and current voluntary board of directors in Tralee, Tralee CIE, Castleisland and Killorglin.
Following the mass The Grand Hotel formed the backdrop for a reunion of the many directors, retired and present staff and family members of the founding fathers.
On Sunday, February 18, 1968 Tralee Credit Union opened its doors in the T.C.L.S Building in Day Place, thanks to the generosity of St Vincent de Paul who owned the building. Tralee Credit Union was assisted by Tralee CIE Credit Union which had formed the year before.

Their vision was to give everyone throughout Tralee access to credit and this remains the ethos of the credit union 50 years later.
Over the years Tralee Credit Union’s common bond has expanded throughout Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. Today with over 43,000 members it is the fifth largest community based credit union in Ireland. The orginal £50 has now grown to €220 million.
Pa Laide, CEO Tralee Credit Union said; “We were very thankful to St. John’s Church as they honoured Tralee Credit Union’s 50th Anniversary by dedicating their 12 noon Sunday Mass to our founding fathers and over 120 directors and the volunteers who have helped Tralee Credit Union down through the years in the spirit of co-operation.
“During the mass Fr. Bernard Healy reflected on our heritage, volunteerism, community spirit and our credit union ethos and value of “people helping people” that by working together people can achieve far more together than individually on their own. We were delighted with the turn out and it was a great afternoon for many former directors to catch up and reminisce about Tralee Credit Union down through the years. We will continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary with a range of activities and events in our local communities and we look foward to our name change at Easter,” said Mr Laide.
Membership of Tralee Credit Union is open to everyone who lives and works within Tralee, Castleisland and the Killorglin area. THIS Sunday is exactly 50 years to the date Tralee Credit Union first opened its doors to members an the Union is marking it that day with a celebration at St John’s Church.
On Sunday, February 18, 1968 at the T.C.L.S. Building in Day Place, Tralee, beside the Dominican Church, Rev C.D. O’Riordan, Prior, Holy Cross instigated the formation of a Study Group to examine the concept, formation and running of a credit union.
Continued below…
Members of the study group were Denis Foley, Sean Moriarty, Tommy Quinlan, Paddy Dillane, Geoffrey O’Donoghue, Rev C.D. O’Riordan, Lauri Healy, John Malone, John Ryan and Tony Meade.
They set up the credit union to give everyone throughout Tralee access to credit. They had studied hard the concept of the credit union ethos and values that members savings form the common pool of funds that allows members to borrow.
In 1968, these ten men pooled together £50 of their own money which was used as the starting capital needed to form the credit union and so Tralee Credit Union was established.
Over the years their common bond expanded throughout Castleisland and Killorglin and today with over 43,000 members it serves its members well with three offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. Today it has over €220 million in Assets and over €185 million in members savings.
Pa Laide, CEO Tralee Credit Union said; “as we approach our 50th Anniversary we reflect on our heritage, our success and our achievements. Together with our members, our board, our management and staff we have worked hard in making Tralee Credit Union the 5thlargest community-based credit union in the country. To mark our 50th Anniversary St. John’s Church in Tralee will kindly dedicate their 12-noon mass to Tralee Credit Union. We would like to extend an open invitation to all our members to this mass. Without the support of our loyal members, our board of directors and volunteers and staff throughout the years, we would not be in a position to serve our local communities and therefore this mass is a celebration of our success.”
Membership of Tralee Credit Union is voluntary and open to everyone who lives and works within Tralee, Castleisland and the Killorglin area.

TRALEE Credit Union will be known as ‘Cara Credit Union’ after the motion to change its name was passed last night at the AGM in The Rose Hotel.
There was a large attendance at the 50th Annual General Meeting where the Board of Directors reported a very positive year of growth for Tralee Credit Union with offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.
It was decided to change the name to as there are now three offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin and the directors felt the name “Tralee Credit Union” is not fully inclusive of these towns and hinterlands. The possibility of any future mergers was also a consideration.

The motion passed by a two-thirds majority and the name change is expected to take effect sometime in early 2018.
The meeting last night heard that assets increased to €220 million and savings increased to €187 million. Their Loan Book, now the credit union’s main source of income, achieved a growth of 15% to €74.3m.
For the first time ever, they paid out over 10,000 loans valued at €38.2m a 12% increase on loans paid out on the previous year. Delinquency continues to improve and their Pearls A1 Ratio (loans greater than 10 weeks in arrears) is at a historic low of 3.31%.
TRALEE Credit Union’s AGM next week will hear they have increased their assets to €220m, savings have grown to €187m and that they are in a strong position for the future.
Tralee Credit Union will hold its 50th Annual General Meeting next Monday at the Rose Hotel in Tralee. Its board of directors will report a very positive year of growth with offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.

The board is recommending a dividend of 0.01% and a loan interest rebate of 2.5% to members. This is down on last year’s dividend of 0.25% and loan interest rebate of 5%.
The reason for this is the board considered the current interest rate environment which is resulting in a continued decline in investment income. The board must act prudently in the light of financial projections showing the business model challenges in the years ahead.
Newly appointed CEO Pa Laide said; “2017 has been a very successful year for Tralee Credit Union and a great start to our 50th year. Results like these don’t just happen they are a result of hard work and dedication from the board, management and staff and loyalty and trust of members. Lending is our main source of income so it is important that we continue to grow our Loan Book and encourage members who need to borrow to use their credit union.”
A significant item on the Agenda at next Monday’s AGM is Tralee Credit Union’s motion to change their name from ‘Tralee Credit Union Ltd’ to ‘Cara Credit Union Ltd’.
Tom Lawlor Chairman of the Board of Directors said; “Nearly 50 years ago we were set up to serve the financial needs of our members in Tralee and then over the years we extended our common bond into Castleisland and Killorglin. Today we have three offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin and we feel the name “Tralee Credit Union” is not fully inclusive of these important towns and hinterlands. As we continue into the future, the time is right to facilitate a change of name for future mergers. In 2014, there were 391 credit unions in the Rep of Ireland, today there are 277 credit unions. Mergers will continue and in doing so will enhance the long term strength of credit unions. We are not the first credit union to seek a name change there has been approximately 12 credit unions in Ireland who have completed the name change process with approximately 14 more credit unions like Tralee seeking a name change. Tralee Credit Union can no longer be defined geographically as this will hinder our growth.”
Tralee Credit Union members aged 16 years and over are invited to attend this year’s AGM at the Rose Hotel on Monday, December 11 at 8pm where the motion to change the name will be put forward and voted by members.
Membership of Tralee Credit Union is voluntary and open to everyone who lives and works within Tralee, Castleisland and the Killorglin area.

TRALEE Credit Union could be known as something else after their AGM at the Rose Hotel on Monday week.
There is a motion coming up that the name will change to ‘Cara Credit Union’, to reflect the changes which have taken place over the years.
In their Winter Newsletter, Tralee Credit Union CEO Pa Laide said: “‘Tralee Credit Union’ is no longer inclusive of our membership, nor is the name a fair representation of who we are today. The name we propose is ‘Cara Credit Union’.”

The name changing process began last January when a committee was formed and assessed 120 names proposed by board and staff.
Tralee Credit Union has offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. It was decided that the name would appeal to everyone irrespective of where they came from, that people could relate to and that was embedded in their ethos and values.
The board will seek approval for the name change at the AGM which takes place on Monday, December 11 at 8pm.

Last Friday, at a Gala Luncheon at the 2017 Credit Team of the Year Awards in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel in Dublin, they were crowned national winners in two categories the “Financial Services Team of the Year” and “Credit Union Credit Team of the Year.”

“It’s timely we have just completed our year end with tremendous success. Results like these don’t just happen they are a result of hard work and dedication from the board, management and staff and loyalty and trust of members.”
“We had a great night celebrating our success at the Kerryman Business Awards later that evening and were delighted to be a Finalist in their “Corporate Social Responsibility” category – a category we are very proud to be associated with and acknowledged for the strong links we have with our members and local community and it was great to celebrate our awards locally on the night,” said Mr Laide.
TRALEE Credit Union has appointed Pa Laide as their new CEO.
A native of Tralee and well known former Kerry footballer, Pa has over 27 years’ experience working in financial services with AIB Bank and has held various positions in management and business development.

I’m really looking forward to the challenge and developing the role with such a great team of professionals at board, management and staff level. I feel privileged to be working with such a strong credit union as Tralee Credit Union. They have just completed their year-end with tremendous success and are shortlisted for a number of upcoming awards. Results like these do not just happen, they are a result of hard work and dedication from the board, management and staff and loyalty and trust of members.”
He continued; “Credit Unions are different from other financial institutions, not just because they are not for profit, but because they are embedded within the community. It’s not a coincidence that credit unions topped the customer experience poll for a third consecutive year last week, members are their key focus, they put their members at the heart of everything they do. As decisions are made locally, credit unions have the flexibility to provide services that are tailored to the individual needs of members. Lending is Tralee Credit Union’s main source of income so it’s important that members access credit and use our services. I look forward to working with the team, developing our suite of services and establishing relationships with our members, businesses and communities throughout Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.”
Tralee Credit Union’s Chairman, Tom Lawlor said; “we are delighted to welcome Pa to Tralee Credit Union. Our core mission is to enhance benefit and choice for our members through the range of financial services we offer, whilst continuing to lead and promote best practice in everything we do.

Lauri Healy was one of Tralee Credit Union’s founding directors when it was set up in 1968. Lauri was a strong believer in the credit union message and ideals. “People Helping People” grounded in credit union’s co-operative values was at the heart of Lauri’s commitment to the movement.
A board of director for over 30 years with Tralee Credit Union, Lauri served with Chapter 23 (Kerry and Mid West credit unions) for as many years supporting the development of other credit unions and served as a board member of the Irish League Of Credit Unions where he helped shape the movement in its early days.
AS Leaving Certificate students mull over their CAO offers, they can take heart that the majority of third level students are now highly optimistic about their future job prospects.
A new survey, commissioned by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU), has examined the attitudes and concerns of 474 third level students and 539 parents of college-going students.
75% of students expect to find work in Ireland when they finish third level, compared with just 39% in 2011 at the height of the economic recession.
Continued below…
Less than a third of students (30%) expect to have to emigrate to find work, compared with a huge 75% in 2011.
10% of students now say they will actively look for a job overseas – down significantly from 32% six years ago. Over two thirds of students (65%) say they are looking forward to a bright future in Ireland – compared with just 21% in 2011.
In 2011, two thirds of students (64%) said their biggest concern was not finding a job – that figure has dropped considerably with just over one third (35%) now reporting this to be their biggest worry.
While confidence levels have improved hugely and the outlook in 2017 is largely optimistic, the attitude towards college-related finance and money issues has remained broadly the same.
Students continue to struggle to cope with the pressure of third level costs – with two thirds (66%) saying financial worries are negatively impacting their overall college experience in 2017. This is almost on a par with 67% at the height of the recession in 2011.
Almost six in ten students (59%) say that finance and debt is their biggest concern in 2017, a fall of just 9% on 2011 figures (68%).
There has been a notable increase in the numbers saying they have to work throughout the college term to help make ends meet.
Two thirds (66%) now say they are working compared with 55% in 2011. Students are also working longer hours in 2017 – reporting an average of 21 hours a week for a weekly wage of €231, compared with 14.5 hours per week for a wage of €145 in 2011.
Almost a quarter of students who work in 2017 say they are skipping lectures to do so (22%).
Commenting on findings, Helen Courtney Power Chairperson, Chapter 23 – Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions Marketing Group said; “It’s great to see that the optimism for the future of our younger generation is back. However one thing very clear from the survey is the day to day reality of coping with the cost of third level education, with a large number reporting how negatively it impacts on their college experience.
Many students find that they have to work and skip lectures just to make ends meet. We would like to remind students here in Kerry that your credit union is there for you. Not only does your credit union offer special low rate student loans but some credit unions in Kerry offer bursaries which can help cover these costs.
The key advantage of borrowing with your credit union is that our student loans offer low interest rates, flexibility in loan repayments, free loan protection insurance and by borrowing locally, you are supporting the local economy in Kerry. We would strongly encourage students and their parents to contact their credit union and see what we can do for you”.
Accommodation is a source of major concern for students in 2017 with rental costs the main obstacle in finding somewhere suitable to live. Four in ten had not yet sourced accommodation at the time of the survey (July 2017).
Of these, 68% said they were worried that they may not be able to find accommodation for the coming college year. Over half of the same group (54%) said it was because accommodation was too expensive, while well over a quarter (29%) said it was because they were unable to find anything suitable
Of all students surveyed, nine in ten view rental costs as being extremely or very high. 58% plan on living at home for the approaching college term in 2017, rising to 66% for the 2018 college term.
The survey found that parents are also more optimistic about the prospects of employment for their children after college. In 2011, 41% of parents said their child finding a job was this was their biggest worry, this figure has almost halved to 20% in 2017.
However, on a less positive note, the numbers saying that money issues are their biggest worry has risen considerably. In 2011, 25% of parents reported this to be their greatest college-related concern, now one third of parents (33%) say it is their biggest worry.
It comes in well ahead of worrying about misuse of drugs and alcohol (15%) and their children passing exams (14%).Previous increases in college registration fees (to a maximum rate of €3,000) could be one of the reasons why money is now the biggest worry for third level parents.
Indeed, when asked about the effect of the increased registration fees, 75% said family budgets had been adversely impacted by this. Almost eight in ten parents surveyed in 2017 (79%) said they will struggle to cover the cost of their child’s third level education.
Parents are also finding accommodation a significant worry with 56% saying they are particularly stressed about rental costs. Just 9% believe there is an adequate supply of rental accommodation for students.
The numbers of parents supporting their children with college related costs has increased slightly since 2011 with 92% now saying they financially support their children through third level, up from 90%.
More parents are now in a position to help finance third level costs through their savings and monthly income than in 2011. The most common method of funding third level is now savings (43%) up from 38% in 2011. 42% of parents are using their monthly income, up from 39% in 2011.

The fund, named as the Lauri Healy Community Project Fund, amounting to €120,000 is in honour of founder director Lauri Healy and will support community based projects over the next four years.
Sean Roche Chairman of the Lauri Healy Community Project Fund Committee said; “The Project Fund will assist in making a significant contribution to community based projects and initiatives within our common bond throughout Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. We are now accepting funding applications and welcome applications from groups and organisations.”
Lauri Healy was one of Tralee Credit Union’s founding directors when it was set up in 1968.
Lauri was a strong believer in the credit union message and ideals. “People Helping People” grounded in credit union’s co-operative values was at the heart of Lauri’s commitment to the movement.
By working together through co-operation, people could achieve far more together than individually on their own.
A board of director for over 30 years with Tralee Credit Union, Lauri served with Chapter 23 (Kerry and Mid West credit unions) for as many years supporting the development of other credit unions and served as a board member of the Irish League Of Credit Unions where he helped shape the movement in its early days.
Closing date for receipt of the first round of applications this year is Friday 31st of March 2017. Applications Forms are available to download on our website www.traleecu.ie or to collect at our offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.

WHILE Christmas is just around the corner and it’s a wonderful time for many families, it can also be a time of stress and financial strain.
Chapter 23 Kerry Credit Unions has teamed up with independent financial advisory organisation MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service) to produce their “Keep the Wolves from the Door” a Christmas Survival Guide.
“Our keep the wolves from the door Christmas survival guide offers top tips for Christmas shopping from setting price limits on presents or Kris Kringle, to setting a realistic Christmas budget,” said Chapter 23 Credit Unions Marketing Committee spokesperson Suzanne Ennis.
Continued below…
“It highlights the different source of credit available from moneylenders, personal loans, credit card debt and high interest store credit. In particular, the guide shows the very high rates of interest being charged by Moneylenders (Doorstep Credit). The guide shows exactly what savings can be made with a credit union loan versus a loan from a moneylender where you can pay up to €120/€140 less on a €500 loan with your credit union”.
Suzanne added; “As most credit unions accept social welfare, access to credit union loans is open to everyone so there is no reason for anyone to be paying moneylenders high interest rates. A lot of credit unions have signed up to the “It makes sense loan” scheme directly to combat moneylenders in their area and access credit union loans as an alternative source of credit with loan repayments coming from Social Welfare either directly or through the An Post Household Budget Scheme.”
Jerry Doyle, Kerry MABS Co-Ordinator said they are delighted to be working with the credit unions on the campaign.
“MABS is a government funded service but operate independently of government departments, the HSE, credit unions, banks, etc. This is a very important as we offer a free, independent and confidential service to those who approach us seeking financial and budgeting advice. It’s been a busy year for MABS, in Kerry this year we have seen an increase in supports for those who are over-indebted and struggling to meet repayments as they fall due. As an example for those in arrears with their home loan repayments and facing possible loss of the family home we now have a free, confidential and independent MABS Dedicated Mortgage Arrears Service. There are a number of other supports available through MABS to assist those who are in debt, which they cannot afford to meet repayments on, so the message is to contact MABS if you cannot resolve the financial problem directly with your lender,” he concluded.
Copies of the guide are available at your credit union and with MABS and in local shops and businesses throughout your community.
AS Tralee Credit Union celebrates International Credit Union Day, they can also celebrate a very special milestone this week.
They have reached a landmark €200 million in assets. This milestone in their development confirms Tralee Credit Union’s position as one of the largest community based credit unions in the country.
“Assets worth €200 Million is a significant achievement for Tralee Credit Union,” said CEO, Fintan Ryan. “It’s all down to members loyalty and support, it underlines the trust our members have in their credit union to manage their affairs with confidence and provides security into the future.”

“€200 million is a far cry from our humble beginnings of £50 when we opened in 1968, today we have 42,000 members, with branch offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin employing over 50 staff within the community. It’s been a very good year for Tralee Credit Union so it’s actually treble celebrations, we have just completed our year end last month and this year over 9,000 members borrowed over €34 million from Tralee Credit Union representing our largest amount ever lent out in a financial year.”
“€34 million reflects the increase in consumer confidence, an increase in people borrowing with Tralee Credit Union and the increase in what we contribute to the local economy as most of €34 million we lent is spent locally helping to sustain growth and employment,” he said.

The fund is being administrated through Kerry Education and Training Board and will be allocated to those needing additional financial support to complete their chosen courses.
“This fund will be a huge benefit to students and adult learners who often face serious financial challenges when returning to fulltime education. We have seen over the past five years that many students drop out over childcare and transport costs. The support of Chapter 23 credit unions towards the financing of the Padraig Pearse Fund will help greatly in increasing course completion rates” stated Colm McEvoy, CEO Kerry ETB.
Kerry ETB currently offer PLC courses in Tralee and Listowel, and limited number of courses in Cahersiveen and Killarney . PLC courses are offered to 730 adults annually and those who successfully complete the courses achieve a Level 5 or Level 6 QQI Award.

Suzanne Ennis, Marketing and Business Development Manager, Tralee Credit Union said; “it’s an expensive time of year with a huge financial burden placed on students and their families. While our education awards don’t solve the problem they do go a long way towards easing the financial pressure. We offer an easy and quick online application process on our website. All you have to do is visit our website www.traleecu.ie fill in your details and you could be one of seven lucky members randomly selected to win.
“For students who need a loan we have a very low Student loan rate available to both students and their parents. We also have a low rate Saver’s Loan for parents who have saved up for college to give them the option to “spend it or save it” on loans of €5,000 or more.”
“Most people find it easier to repay a loan than it is to save so they borrow on the strength of their savings. With our saver’s loan they still have their savings at the end of the loan plus they have the flexibility of knowing that they can repay their loan anytime without penalty and they have peace of mind of free life cover on both their loans and their savings with our Loan Protection and Life Savings Insurance.”

TRALEE Credit Union has seen a 64% increase in motor loans to customers so far this year according to latest figures and have just decreased their loan rate again for the next three months.
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry issued its official 161 car sales figures for Kerry last week with an increase in new motor sales of over 25%. Since January 1, 2016, Tralee Credit Union has lent out €7.4 million in motor loans to its members in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin, a €3 million increase on this time last year.
“The increase in car sales is due mainly to renewed confidence in people spending again, improved economy and this is reflective in all our lending in general,” said Fintan Ryan, Tralee Credit Union CEO.
“While there is no doubt people are taking up PCP finance deals, our motor loan figures show the value people still see in taking out a credit union loan to finance their new or second hand vehicle. The main difference between PCP finance and a credit union loan is ownership, with a credit union loan you own the vehicle day 1, with PCP/Hire Purchase agreements you don’t own the vehicle until the final repayment. A credit union loan offers you flexibility, you can repay your loan without any penalty, there are no balloon payments at the end, no mileage restrictions and we also insure your loan with free Loan Protection Insurance,” continued Mr Ryan.
“What attracts people to PCP finance is the low repayment rate. To combat this, Tralee Credit Union reduced their motor loan rate earlier in the year and has just reduced their motor loan rate again for a limited period July, August and September,” he said.
TRALEE Credit Union members will be among the first in the country to have access to a fully functional Debit Card designed and developed specifically for credit unions.
The local branch, along with ten other credit unions, announced today the arrival of their long awaited Debit Mastercard. The card is supported by MasterCard and is accepted anywhere the MasterCard logo is displayed worldwide.
This service means that Tralee Credit Union members can now avail of full banking services from its credit union. The new Debit MasterCard facilitates contactless payments and supports fully electronically enabled accounts, on-line access and transaction facilities, and a mobile app for managing finances on the go. Roll-out to members will begin the middle of June.
This is the first time a Debit Card has been produced, developed and controlled by a group of credit unions for their members.
Fintan Ryan, CEO Tralee Credit Union and Chairman DCG Card Services said; “thanks to the vision and determination of Tralee Credit Union’s Board of Directors we are delighted to bring this valuable new service to our members.
A recent REBO (Credit Union Restructuring Board) Survey revealed that 84% of credit union members wanted access to a Debit Card from their Credit Union. Tralee Credit Union came together with ten other credit unions to address this demand. We had one vision, one purpose, to deliver a fully functional debit card to our members.”
“We formed a not-for profit organisation DCG Card Services and are proud of the legacy this new service will create and proud to be a pioneer in making it happen. Members can have their income paid directly to their credit union Access Account and use their debit card to purchase goods in store and online and at any ATM anywhere in the world. They can set up direct debits, pay bills and electronically transfer funds online and on their phone using our Mobile App, the complete banking service package.”
