Martin thanked the sponsors and the festival for their continued support of the club, “we are in continuing development phases and the changes to the training grounds will provide a popular facility for all runners to be able to use, with track lanes for running and walking.

Martin continued; “We are very proud to have two of our top athletes here today. Travane Morrison recent gold medal winner of the Irish National Senior 100m and Cillian Griffin who won two medals for Ireland at the recent U18 Youth Nationals International, both of these athletes along with the entire club have benefitted from the laying track lanes and we expect more athletes at elite level with another 200m being laid in the coming weeks.”

Paul Griffin Tralee Harriers PRO, said: “It is great event for the town the festival and for runners. The race regularly attracts up to 500 competitors, who get to see Tralee and can experience the town and the festival at its best after their morning run. We are really looking forward to the day and hope that everyone will once again enjoy taking part. We had a very successful event last year and are keeping it the same this year with bands, music along the course. We have several returning roses and escorts who will be battling it out for a commissioned glass trophy. Our refreshment stand will be well stocked and the local business have come out to in great numbers and helped us, we would be at a loss without the continued support of Tralee town”

THEY’RE a hardy lot that running crowd.

It was a case of driving rain and wind on Saturday morning as hundred of people set off on the Tralee Half Marathon, 10k and 5k races from Tralee Bay Wetlands.

There was no let up all morning but they ploughed on and it must have felt all the more rewarding when they crossed the finish line.

Though there was in excess of 560 signed up for the event a very brave 455 competed across all the events. Times across all three races were very competitive and far exceeded what would be expected with the weather that was upon these athletes.

Martin Fitzgerald, the Race Director, said he was very pleased to see such a great turn out and commended all who took part on the day braving the elements. “We were in ice, snow and freezing temps last year, heavy rain and high winds this year, and still getting good numbers, we are surely due a fine day and even bigger numbers. I am delighted to see so many from the local area taking part but more impressed that almost 50% of our participants are from outside Kerry, coming for Dublin, Donegal and some from the UK.”

Tralee Harriers thanked its main sponsors; Colette and Louis of Byrne’s Spar Oakpark and Caherslee and Brendan Kennelly and his team in the Kerry’sEye.  Local suppliers Bernard Reidy of Trophy World for Medals and Trophies, and Una and Donagh O’Mahony in Radar Retail for T- Shirts; Mary O’Connor and her team in Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre and Nathan McDonnell of The Ballyseedy Cafe at the Wetlands; the team at the Rose Hotel, Dennison Design, Ballygarry Hotel, McElligotts, Tralee Advertiser, Aspen Grove, Dillions Waste and Cara Credit Union who helped to make the event a success.

Paul Griffin the event organiser and Tralee Harriers PRO, thanked Caroline O’Carroll and her committee for all their hard work in getting this event together and thanked the various sponsors.

But more importantly he wanted to make sure the true heroes of the day were acknowledged

“We are very fortunate to have so many good people in the club, Parents and athletes from 8 to 18 and their friends that are willing to come out and help with the running of the event. It takes roughly 80 volunteers to make this event a success and without them we would not be able to put on this calibre of event. Standing out in the pouring rain and cheering and encouraging strangers running around Tralee takes a special type of person and we are delighted to have so many will to do it” .

Tralee Harriers AC News

TRALEE Harriers Tiny Tots invaded Nenagh, this past weekend to take part in the Munster U9 -U12 Indoor Championships at the Nenagh Olympic Arena

10 athletes competed over the two days in the Munster U9 -U12 Indoor Championships at the Nenagh Olympic Arena, and all athletes gave it their all and did themselves proud. with many setting new Pb’s in the sprints.

Sean Murphy competed in the 60m and rean well, in the heat finishing 6th. In the Long Jump Sean shone and listening to all he learned in the two 15 min training sessions he had he jumped his way to 4th place and a Jump of 3.08m.

Lucy O’Connor managed to get herself inside the top 10 in the long jump and then went on to take on the big guns of Munster in the 60m sprint. She Won her heat and was Second in her Semi final. Lucy finished just outside the medals but was a great effort all round by Lucy.

Rachel O’Mahoney moved between three events. She started with the High Jump and though fell short of her mark she did very well in a top class field. She followed that up with three strong jumps in the Long Jump, still working on the run up and take-off, but a good start and good base to work from. Her 60m sprint heat was good enough to take her through to the semi finals.

Sorcha Casey competed in the 60m and Long Jump, again a first timer to Nenagh, Sorcha tried hard in the long jump and had two very clean jumps on the board, she like Rachel ran very well in her heats of the 60m but alas the field was too strong, and she didn’t progress to the final

Lucy O Donnell, another first timer in Nenagh, was competing in the 60 and long jump and though didn’t medal she had a great day out. Caelainn Richardson was in action on Saturday in the U12 600m. She did well in her heat but narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

Grace O’Donnell like the other girls did the 60m and the Long Jump. She did well in the long jump, and set a new PB in the 60m, Caoimhe Murphy has been giving it all in training since September Caoimhe ran well in the 60m and her time was a new PB and she made it into the semis. She did well in the long jump and will be ready for counties in a few month.

Lucy and Rachel Mulgrew, ran and jumped well in their events and set new PB’s in both events.

It was a great day out, and everyone did really well over the two days, thank you to the parents and other coaches who came with the athletes and helped make the day one to remember.
Rachel Bowler went to Dublin to try her hand at the AAI Indoor Games she competed in both the Long Jump and the Triple Jump at the New Sports Ireland National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown DublinAs her coach reported earlier Rachel finished in 5th place with with a jump of 5.25m. “All good as changes in running technique are bedding in and have put performance back a little. This is the time of year for adjustment so all part of the master plan!!!”

In the Triple Jump Rachel did one better and finished in 4th place with (if I’m not mistaken) a equalling pb of 10.80m

As always great job Rachel, upcoming Munsters are looking good.

Solange Carla DIOGO who is one of Rachel’s Triple Jump training buddies came home in third with a jump of 10.98. Good Job Solange.

The final event was the dreaded 800m, Jordan ran well in the two laps however faded to last in the third lap, at the bell Jordan found 5th gear and took off, going from 8th to 1st coming off the last bend coming home very strong in a time of 2.28.94. this was enough to secure second place 76points ahead of third. and a National Silver medal. Well done Jordan.

Cillian Griffin was also in action. Cillian was involved in a tightly matched U16 group with not much between the competitors

Cillian took third in the Long Jump 5.39m and followed that with third in the Hurdles in 9.68sec, next up was the High Jump, Cillian stumbled here but with the shot next he pulled it back with the second longest throw of 10.93m, a whole meter and half ahead of third furthest throw.

Coming into the dreaded 800m Cillian lay in third and there was only 80 points between him and 6th place so it suddenly became an open race and it had to be a run of his life, the standard was very high with the winner coming home in 2.07.08, Cillian came home in 2.27.60 which is a new PB for him.

Cillian finished in fifth place which is a great achievement for him. Well done Cillian

Special mention to Jack Hannon from St. Brendan’s AC who was competing in the U14 group, Jack fought very hard throughout the event and showed great maturity in his 4th place finish taking away the joys of the experience and a desire to come back in April for the Outdoor Combined events Well done Jack

Tralee Harriers Athletic Club News

Another weekend of Medals for Tralee Harriers Athletic Club.

Today was the turn of our Senior and Master athletes, with the finishing of the Junior competitions.

Six Medals were claimed Sunday at the Munster Senior and Masters Indoor Championships in Nenagh

Rachel Bowler was the clubs top athlete of the day with a hat trick of Silvers.

Rachel was just pipped at the post in the Senior Long Jump finishing in second place with a jump of 5.29m, her hop skip and jump in the Junior womens Triple Jump of 10.30m secured her a second silver.

The third was a hard fought sprint to the finish line taking second in the Senior womens 200m in a time of 26.56sec. Rachel’s next stop will be Nationals in two weeks and we wish her and her Sandpit buddy Aoibheann the very best of luck.

Eoin O’Carroll was back in Nenagh today to try his hand at the Senior Long Jump and the 60m. Eoin did very well in the Long Jump and getting closer to that 7m mark with each jump. his jump of 6.79m was enough to hold on to the second spot.

Eoin competed in the heats of the Senior mens 60m and though qualified easily for the final, a sligh injury caused him to withdraw from the final, a wise decision with National Championships around the corner.

Wishing Eoin a speedy recovery.

Patsy O’Connor was the last of the club athletes attending Nenagh today. Patsy was competing in the O60’s mens events.
Patsy as always stood out in his age group in the shot put, taking Gold with a throw of 13.87 with second throwing 10.63.

***THIS IS ALSO A NEW MUNSTER CBP*** WELL DONE PATSY***

Patsy also competed in the 60m. This was a thrilling race with top three crossing the line together.

Photofinish was called and sadly Patsy ended up in third place on time of 8.99. Patsy is a true athlete and is showing that throwers can be track athletes too. We also wish Patsy the very best of luck in his upcoming Nationals.

So that is 3 athletes, 1 Gold, 4 Silver and a Bronze

Congratulations to all the athletes who have competed at Munster events, the past two weekend. looking forward to reporting on your successes at nationals.

Tralee Harriers Bring Home Medals From Munster Indoor Championships

.

A report from Paul Griffin on Tralee Harriers members at an event at the weekend…

Orla O’Reilly, Rachel Bowler, Aoife O’Carroll and Aoibheann O’Brien at the championships.

The first athletics event of 2017 took place in Nenagh this week, with the Munster Indoor Junior and U23 Championship and the Juvenile Pentathlons.

Tralee Harriers Athletic Club had several entries over the two days with all athletes going home with medals.

It was a flurry of Golds on Saturday with the comeback king, Eoin O’Carroll, competing in the U23 age group. Eoin romped home in the 60m taking the gold in a time of 7.24 before going on to take the gold in the long jump with a leap of 6.70m. Great start to the year for Eoin, with a lot more to come.

Not to be outdone, Cathal Fitzgibbon took to the start of the Junior men’s 1500m, this was Cathal’s first event wearing the Tralee Harriers singlet.

Cathal ran a tactical race and kept his competitors in check taking the last lap at the bell and bringing home gold in his age group. Well done Cathal, more to come from you, looking forward to seeing you on the national stage later in the year.

Sunday brought the Junior girls to Nenagh and two boys for the Pentathlons.
More Gold for Tralee Harriers and a string of silver medals were brought home.

Cillian Griffin took top position on the podium claiming Gold in the U16 Pentathlon, not one of Cillian’s favourite events, but took to the track and went for it, leading from the start and setting a new personal best in the High Jump, he finished the 800m with a fine sprint coming of the last bend to hold off the rest of the field.

Aoibheann O’Brien left Nenagh with a silver in each hand and another around her neck. Aoibheann took home silver with a very close finish in the Junior women’s 60m and also took silver in the Long Jump.

Jordan Kissane, took part in his first Pentathlon and though slightly daunted by the task he, in true Jordan style, went in and made friends with all the competitors and then sucker-punched them by taking Silver in the event.

He did very well in all events staying in the top three all the way through but he shone in the high jump with a new pb of 1m 51cm.

Orla O’Reilly, Rachel Bowler and Aoife O’Carroll competed in a variety of events and though they did not succeed in gaining individual medals they blew out the winter cobwebs and shock off the dust and are ready to come back stronger than ever.

The three Girls were joined by Aoibheann in the Junior Women’s 4x200m relay and they gave it their all bringing home a silver medal each.

That’s eight athletes 11 medals -4 golds and seven silvers. Not a bad day at the races at all.  Scroll down for action from the events…
