In particular, coastal areas will be subject to high, gusting winds, so members of the public are advised to stay away from cliffs, coasts and piers.

Kerry County Council’s Emergency Response Teams are in place to deal with emergency events. Additionally, an Emergency Phoneline will be in operation for the duration of the storm: 066-7183588.

U12 Girls T1 had a strong panel of 11 against Kenmare Kestrels.

The Imperials girls had a great 1st quarter with all 5 on the score sheet 18 to 4 end of the first.

Imperials kept a strong hold throughout despite Kenmare coming into the game in each quarter.

Excellent layups and rebounding stood to the girls and a low fouling game showed great improvements particularly when they have not played a game since December.

Final score 47-16.

The second quarter saw Imperials stretch their lead with Emily Flynn and Ciara Costello in control under the boards and Anna Chute hitting shot after shot from distance. Half time 9 – 35

U18 Girls T1

TK Bobcats 49-42 Tralee Imperials

The u18 div 1 girls played Team Kerry Bobcats in the fifth round league game in Cumann Iosaef on Tuesday February 8th in the Div 1&2 league.

Imperials after a tough weekend of National Cup games were slow to start this game and were 21-8 to TK Bobcats at the end of the first quarter.

TK Bobcats Ella Quirke made a number of shots with the Imperials looking sluggish in defence and failing to capitalise in transition.

Lauren Smullen and Niamh Collins kept Imperials in touch with some fine outside shots leaving the score at half time 33-18 to TK Bobcats.

Tralee Imperials changed up the defence man to man and Holly O’Brien worked superbly on the floor throughout this quarter to get herself two nice floaters and bringing herself to the free throw line where she gained some additional scores.

The score at the end of the quarter was 35-29 to TK Bobcats.

The Imperials girls hustled well throughout the last quarter with Clodagh Murray rebounding well under the boards and Grace Lucid and Aisling Ni Ainifein making their outside shots.

ROCKIE golfers and supporters gathered in Kirby’s Brogue Inn on Sunday evening for the launch of the 2022 Austin Stacks Golf Classic which takes place on Friday, March 25 at Tralee Golf Club.

Speaking at the launch, Austin Stacks Chairman Shane Lynch said that “The Rock has a long and storied history of golf fundraising events and this year’s edition promises to be our biggest yet.

“As we emerge from Covid restrictions, the Golf Classic provides our fabulous supporters with a fantastic day out at the magnificent Barrow links course and an opportunity to celebrate our Senior Team’s hugely successful 2021 campaign which culminated in our 13th County Championship title and the return of the Bishop Moynihan Cup to the Rock”.

Shane remarked that this year’s Golf Classic is a hugely important part of Austin Stacks’ fundraising campaign to generate much-needed finances required for the club’s pitch upgrade programme and to alleviate the costs of the Senior Team’s County and Munster Championship campaigns.

He added: “like all GAA clubs, our fundraising capability was adversely impacted by the Pandemic and we now call on all our supporters and on keen golfers in the Kingdom and beyond to get behind this fabulous event and help Austin Stacks finance the next wave of development in the club”.

At the launch, which was attended by several of the County Championship winning team, Shane thanked the club’s Golf Classic committee who have worked tirelessly over the past number of months to make the event a reality, and also to Tralee Golf Club for hosting the event.

CLUB SOCIAL: Austin Stacks GAA club celebrated in style last Saturday night (Feb 12th) as nearly 300 Rockies gathered in Ballygarry House Hotel for their Victory Celebration.

The focus of the night was of course the celebration of the club’s recent Co. Championship & Club Championship successes but due to covid the wins from 2020 of both Senior Club Championship & Town Championship were also celebrated.  Our B team were celebrating too, as newly crowned champions of Div 5 and Junior Town League winners.

MC for the evening was Radio Kerry’s Tim Moynihan who did a superb job and certainly got the scoop of the night with Kieran Donaghy announcing that he has no club retirement plans at the moment much to the delight of the attendees.

Other speakers on the night included Club Chairman, Shane Lynch, Co. Board Chairman Pat O’Sullivan, Senior Manager, Wayne Quillinan, B Manager, Paddy Barry and Mikey Collins who spoke on behalf of the Ladies Club and encouraged members to all sign up for the Lidl Promotion and win a jersey set for Austin Stacks LGFA.

Senior Player of the Year went to Colin Griffin, B Player of the Year went to Conor Myers, the Supporter of the Year went to ‘The 16th Man’, a general award to our wonderful supporters who brought colour and excitement to the terraces throughout the season.

Elma Nix also received a presentation for her outstanding service as secretary of the club over the past 8 years. Meanwhile, Best Dressed Lady on the night went to Noelle Cregan and Best Dressed Man was Conor Donaghy.

The night began with a champagne reception at 6.30pm, followed by a delicious meal. After the medal presentation, ‘Heart & Soul’ provided the entertainment followed by DJ Francie Breen.

Yes, indeed it was a night to savour! It’s fair to say the Rockies enjoyed themselves and the party last well into the wee hours.

Lotto results: Winning numbers were 1; 3; 18; 31. Lucky dip winners of €20 were: Pat & Geraldine McLaughlin, Myra Daly, John Cleary, Emer Hogan, Gunther Seich. Next Tuesday’s jackpot will be €6,400.

U9s: The u9s boys took to the astro last Sunday morning in the MTU and were delighted with the extra space and freedom of the outdoors. After an energetic warm up, we practised the pick up and solos. There was fierce character and grit shown in the matches at the end of the session and all coaches were very impressed!

U11s: We had 23 U11s training last Sunday morning in MTU. This week we concentrated on the Punt and Hook kick followed by a shooting drill. We finished up with a possession game. All the lads performed with great credit and no shortage of skill. All going well we will see ye all again next Sunday.

U15s: Our u15 team had another gym session last Friday night. This gym work will continue every Friday (6-7pm) in the club gym for the next few months. Last Sunday we took part in the Comórtas an Earraigh in Gaeltacht. Despite only having 17 players the lads played some super football.

First game was against Laune Rangers who proved too strong for us winning by 2-7 to 1-2. Our second game saw us have a ding dong battle with Spa, finishing in a draw at full time. Our final group game was against the hosts An Gaeltacht.

Despite An Gaeltacht being a more physical team it was our lads who knuckled down and sprang a surprise, winning by 3-4 to 2-5. Those results saw us into the C final where we faced Spa again.

Once again this was a very even match. Spa led by a point at halftime but our lads edged the second half to deservedly win by 1-9 to 2-5. Our panel was: Iarla Hanafin, Jack Kelly, Daragh Morris, Cathal Fitzgerald, Cillian Griffin, Ruadhan Clifford, Brain Heaphy, Jeaic Canty, Jamie Schoenmaker, Jake Coffey, Conor Lucey, Paddy McElligott, Brian Reidy, Liam Cooper, Fionn Daly, Will Somers & Malachy Warr.

U17s: Our minor team got their season off to a winning start last Sunday when they defeated Kerins O’Rahillys by 2 points in the Town Board. Final score: Na Gaeil 1-8, Rahillys 2-3.

Cards: The weekly 45 card game is back. Every Wednesday night, starting at 9pm sharp. Bring your own partner or come along and we will get you a partner.

Bingo: A message from Niamh Burke….Na Gaeil Bingo Committee are on a recruitment drive looking for volunteers to help at their weekly Monday night Bingo, once every 5 to 6 weeks on a rota basis from 7.30pm to 10.00 pm. This is a vital fundraiser for Na Gaeil and also is a much loved weekly social event for all our patrons. If interested please leave your name and contact details at the clubhouse. I want to thank our existing Committee members who have given their time and energy so generously for our bingo for over a decade now.

Scór na nÓg: Scór na nÓg will be starting shortly. This is for secondary school students under the age of 17 on the 1st January 2022. There are competitions in Figure Dancing, Set Dancing, Solo Singing, Ballad Group, Recitation, Novelty Act (drama), Instrumental Music and Quiz. If there are adults in the club interested in mentoring any of the above, or any teenagers interested in competing, please contact Margaret on 086 0855008.

Green CBS: Hard luck to the Green C.B.S. and our clubmen Liam Óg Kingston & Tadhg Reen who lost out to St. Brendans College in the Corn Uí Mhuirí final last Saturday.

Coiste Na nÓg

Our u17 minors faced Ardfert in our first game of the season taking part in the Tralee /St Brendan’s combined boards league at the pitch in Churchill. We battled a strong Ardfert side manfully in the first half and trailed by 2 points at half time.

This was in no small due to the superb performance of Cathal White who assumed the position between to posts at the last minute and a solid performance of our full and half back lines (Michael Culloty, Aidan Horgan, Tom Long, Luke Horgan, Diarmuid Galvin and William O’Donoghue).

At midfield Sean Rice and Shane Gilroy played pivotal roles. Jack Slattery did trojan work as a sweeping centre forward and our forwards Jamie Burke, Mark O’Connor, Micheal Savage and Sam Mansfield acquitted themselves well in difficult conditions.

In the second half our tired legs and a stiff oncoming wind allowed Ardfert to finish deserving winners on a score line of 4-6 to 1-2

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS
We had a great start back to training this morning.  We had the luxury of training indoors so the wet weather didn’t affect the enthusiasm of the boys and girls.
All the boys and girls got stuck in and were fabulous for the first day of the season. It was lovely to see new faces. We will be training next Sunday at 11am in our complex in ballyseedy. New players always welcome.

U8/U10/GIRLS
It really was a cold and bitter February morning to kick off the 2022 season, but despite the low temperatures and cold showers, we had a good turnout of eager players.
With coaches Tanya, Padraig and John also ready to go, it was important to keep the girls moving to ensure they didn’t get cold on the day.

So, after some quick warm-up exercises, we went straight into a few drills, both kicking and passing, to make sure that none of the players had forgotten anything from last season – and looking at the skills on offer, it was great to see that they had been practicing over the winter.

In particular the new girls who had come up from the u6 group, showed that they were well prepared to wear the John Mitchel’s jersey with pride for years to come. Following the drills, we had a quick game, with the instruction for all players to keep moving, find a teammate, work hard and get scores.

All were achieved and we were delighted to see the commitment on offer. The players were sent home with some homework skills to practice during the week and training continues next Sunday at 11am. We are really looking forward to welcoming new players this year and there is no doubt that with the talent available to us, we will be having a fantastic year. New players always welcome

U12/14/16Girls
Training days and times yet to be decided stay tuned for more information

UNDER 11 BOYS

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and Tradehouse Central Ballincollig took a win apiece over the weekend as the sides met twice in 24 hours in their Round 13 and the delayed Round 9 fixtures in the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League.

The Warriors maintained their perfect League home record with a 94-90 win on Saturday, and in doing so brought Tradehouse Central Ballincollig’s 11 game winning streak to an end.

The following day the teams reassembled in the Ballincollig Community School with the home side exacting a hard-fought victory to guarantee top spot in the Southern Conference as the League playoffs positions come into sharp focus.

.

The Warriors got the two-day event off to a winning start in Tralee with both sides contributing to an entertaining and exciting encounter.

The teams were level at the end of the opening quarter after Darragh O’Hanlon opened his and the Warriors account with a three.

Scores from Aaron Calixte, Nikola Roso, Daniel Jokubaitis and Eoin Quigley were negated by efforts from Andre Nation, Keelan Cairns, Kieran O’Sullivan and Padraig Lucey to see the sides level at 19-19.

The sides were level again at halftime after the Warriors had pushed ahead early in the second with Calixte firing in his first effort from distance.

Milorad Sedlarevic replied in kind for Ballincollig to launch a run of scores for the Cork side through the impressive Nation and Adrian O’Sullivan that saw them wrestle back the lead of 43-38.

However, the Warriors finished the half on a high with scores from Roso, Brandon Cotton and a crowd pleasing lay up from Kieran Donaghy saw the sides level at 45-45 at the long break.

The Warriors embarked on a run of their own early in the third with Darragh O’Hanlon twice finding the basket from distance and when Calixte followed his example, the home side moved into a decisive 64-51 lead.

Ballincollig’s shooting quality was called upon and O’Sullivan, Nation and Sedlarevic duly obliged to cut the gap back to 4 but a late Jokubaitis effort from inside saw the Warriors take a 73-67 lead into the final quarter.

Nikola Roso produced some of his best minutes this season in the final quarter to dominate under the Ballincollig board and help himself to four scores in a row, but the visitors were also finding scores when they needed, and four threes from Sedlarevic, Nation, O’Sullivan and Keelan Cairns turned the game around and saw them lead 84-81 with 4 minutes remaining.

However, the Warriors regained their footing and when O’Hanlon fired in his fourth three of the game and Roso was again on the mark they took a commanding 90-84 lead into the final minutes.

Roso and Calixte made maximum use of three visits to the line and despite two late threes from Sedlarevic and Nation, the Warriors had done enough to keep their perfect home record intact and in turn bring Ballincollig’s impressive 11-game winning run to an end.

Top scorers: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Nikola Roso 27, Aaron Calixte 23, Darragh O’Hanlon 16

Tradehouse Central Ballincollig: Andre Nation 35, Milorad Sedlarevic 18, Kieran O’Sullivan 12

Just less than 24 hours after the game in Tralee it was a case of take-two as the sides took to the court again in Ballincollig Community School to fulfil the Round 9 clash originally slated for 3rd January that was postponed due to Covid.

Dylan Corkery got Ballincollig off to a fast start with a lay-up and when Andre Nation and Keelan Cairns hit two major scores the hosts led 8-4.

Nikola Roso continued his good form from the previous day with the three scores for the Warriors before Pau Cami Galera pushed Ballincollig 14-10 ahead.

Fergal O’Sullivan had the last say in the quarter with a trademark three to cut the Ballincollig lead to 14-13 at quarter time.

Ballincollig had the better of the exchanges in the second quarter with Milorad Sedlarevic, Padraig Lucey and Nation all in range with the Warriors response coming from Eoin Quigley, Aaron Calixte and Daniel Jokubaitis.

However, Cairns hit a significant three late on and Nation pulled up for two floated efforts to see the home side’s advantage out to 36-27 at half time

The Warriors got right back into contention in the third with Roso and Quigley hitting early scores before a Calixte three cut the gap to a single score.

Sedlarevic hit two huge threes to restore the Ballincollig lead before Lucey batted in a rebound to push the gap out to 5.

However, Brandon Cotton planted his feet and fired down a cracking three before a Kieran Donaghy effort levelled the game at 57-57 at three quarter time.

The Warriors drove on in the final quarter and when Cotton, Roso and Calixte combined to ease into a 5-point lead midway through the period.

However, Ballincollig were in no mood to cough up another defeat as Kieran O’Sullivan hit a huge three to bridge the gap before Adrian O’Sullivan produced one of his showpiece threes to take back the lead.

.

It proved to be the killer score as Ballincollig saw out the win with Andre Nation and Adrian O’Sullivan copper-fastening the victory with six from six from the free throw line.

Top scorers: Tradehouse Central Ballincollig: Andre Nation 22, Milorad Sedlarevic 11, Pau Cami Galera 9

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Nikola Roso 18, Aaron Calixte 18, Daniel Jokubaitis 13

Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is a clash with NUIG Maree at the Tralee Sports Complex in their last home Southern Conference fixture of the season with tip off at the regular time of 7.30pm.

ENTERPRISE Rent-A-Car and Children’s Books Ireland today launched an initiative to give away 1,900 copies of ‘Why the Moon Travels’ by Oein DeBhairduin to children at 64 school across Ireland at an event in Tralee attended by Minister for Education Norma Foley.

Through the ROAD Forward initiative, more than 1,900 sixth class pupils from across Ireland will receive their own copy of Why the Moon Travels, a collection of folk tales rooted in the oral tradition of the Irish Traveller community collected by Oein DeBhairduin and beautifully illustrated by Leanne McDonagh.

Students at Caherleaheen National School in Tralee, were among the first pupils to receive copies of the book through the programme at a special event attended by Minister Foley.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Foley said; “I am delighted to be launching the ROAD Forward initiative here in Tralee. Introducing children to reading at a young age is crucial and initiatives like this go a long way to fostering an appetite for reading in our schools. It is said that books are uniquely portable magic and this initiative will transport a myriad of Irish children and young people into a world of Irish folk and fantasy through the power of reading.”

“‘Why the Moon Travels’ which preserves and showcases the wonderful oral tradition of the Irish Traveller community. I hope all the pupils receiving a copy of this book enjoy it and share with their friends and families the unique tales it captures.”

Speaking of the initiative, Enterprise’s Managing Director for Ireland, Brendan Grieve, said: ‘Enterprise has a long-standing relationship with communities across Ireland and we continue to support this through initiatives such as ROAD Forward, which stands for Respect, Opportunity, Achievement and Diversity. These are values that are central to everything we do at Enterprise.’

‘We’re incredibly proud to partner with Children’s Books Ireland and are grateful to Norma Foley for supporting today’s launch. It’s a brilliant book, which I hope will give a lot to the pupils. As a father of four, I understand the positive impact that a love of reading can have on children and the opportunities that it can bring as both a source of pleasure and empowerment. I hope the children enjoy Why the Moon Travels and that it helps to foster a life-long love of the written word.’

Elaina Ryan, CEO, Children’s Books Ireland said, ‘What a gift the Enterprise ROAD Forward programme will be for almost 2,000 sixth class students all over Ireland. ‘Why The Moon Travels’ won the Judges’ Special Award and the Eilís Dillon Award at our 2021 KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards, and we are sure that it will captivate young readers’ attention as much as it did ours. With Enterprise’s support, we will ensure that children have access to excellent stories from diverse perspectives and support wonderful Irish-published work in the process.’

Enterprise Holdings first announced its ROAD Forward programme in November 2020 through its philanthropic arm, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. The $55 million, global initiative focuses on promoting Respect, Opportunity, Achievement and Diversity (ROAD) for youth and families by addressing three areas in need of urgent attention: early childhood development, youth health and wellness, and career and college preparation.

THE generosity of spectators and exhibitors was the highlight of a fundraising car show in Tralee on Sunday.

Members of Kerry Motor Club organised the show to raise funds for member James Quinlan who suffered a brain haemorrhage in New York late last year.

The Waterville man remains in intensive care in a Manhattan Hospital and the club ran Sunday’s fundraiser to help offset some of the medical bills he faces.

An estimated 250 cars lined the Brandon Car Park in Tralee on Sunday afternoon. Each driver of a show car donated to the fund while members of the public also paid large sums of money to see the cars.

While no exact figure has been reached just yet it is estimated that between €15,000 and €20,000 was collected on the day.  The oldest car on show was a 1922 Peugeot Type One-63.

Owner  Michael Crean from Camp spent the last 20 years restoring the car and it made its first public appearance on Sunday.

“It turned 100 years old on February 10,” he said. “I just love French cars. I found the chassis in Kildare and have been working on it for 20 years.”

Richard Bono and Brendan Farmer showed off a 90-year-old Riley – the car was bought brand new by Richard’s brother law in London in 1932 and it has remained in the extended Bono family ever since.

London Irish Motor Club members Paul Alexander and Lee Robins received a special award on the day for the furthest travelled. They brought a 1993 Subaru Legacy from London for the event.

Several star attractions at the show traced almost the entire history of the World Rally Championship.

These included a Ford Focus World Rally Car from the Mid-2000s, a Ford Escort Cosworth from the 1990s and an ex-Billy Coleman Ford Escort Mk2 from the 1970s.

Kerry’s oldest rally car, a 1953 DKW was on show while one of the special guests at the show was current World Rally Championship star, Paul Nagle. Local motorcycle racers displayed the bikes they usually race at Mondello Park.

Every club in the county, including promoters Kerry Motor Club, Killarney and District Motor Club, Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club and Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club displayed cars.

Other clubs represented at the show included Birr and District Automobile Club, Galway Motor Club. Limerick Motor Club, Cork Motor Club and Clare Motor Club.

National organisations like the Opel Club of Ireland and the Ford Cortina Owners’ Club displayed a large number of show cars.

Kerry  Motor Club’s John Liston is a close friend of the Quinlan family.  “I am blown away by the generosity of the people who came to support the show,” he said.

“The organising team have so many to thank, from people who displayed cars, the setup crews led by Brendan Shanahan, spot prize sponsors, neighbouring clubs who supplied cars and marshalls, it exceeded expectations and we had a great day so a huge thank you to anyone who helped in any small way.” To donate to the cause go to https://gofund.me/2d8d612a Scroll down for photos…

Lee Strand Signs Up With Flogas For Carbon Offsetting Initiative

.
At the presentation of the South Pole Carbon Offsetting Certificate to Lee Strand were l/r: James Sugrue, Plant Manager, Lee Strand and Michael Murphy, area sales representative, Flogas.

LEE Strand is the first dairy processor in Ireland to sign up with Flogas to the carbon offsetting initiative for its commercial customers.

Lee Strand has compensated for 209 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by investing with Flogas in the South Pole’s climate protection project, Aura Solar in Mexico.

“As part of our continued commitment to protecting our environment, Lee Strand is proud to be the first dairy processor in Ireland to avail of the Flogas carbon offsetting initiative,” said James Sugrue, Plant Manager, Lee Strand.

Continued below…

.

“This enables Lee Strand to offset the carbon gas produced in our production plant and therefore having zero carbon output. This strengthens our sustainability strategy as Lee Strand also has zero waste to landfill with our partnership locally with Dillion Waste. Lee Strand is continually striving to operate sustainably, every step in our production process is important including our 100% renewable and 100% recyclable cartons.”

John Rooney, Managing Director, Flogas Ireland said, “We’re delighted to welcome Lee Strand as our very first dairy processor in Ireland for the carbon offsetting initiative.  Lee Strand has a very proactive approach towards tackling climate change and has differentiated themselves from their competition in the marketplace.”

Carbon offsetting is recognised worldwide as a way of managing carbon emissions.  Flogas collaborates with South Pole, a gold standard provider of carbon offsetting projects worldwide.

By investing in sustainable global projects, companies can reduce or capture an equivalent amount of carbon emissions.

By providing a clean alternative to fossil fuel-generated electricity, the project significantly reduces emissions and helps mitigate the environmental risks of the transport of hydrocarbons into the delicate ecosystem of the Gulf of California.
