At a formal reception at the Tralee Bay Wetlands, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jim Finucane, welcomed all of the delegates to Tralee and promised them that they would enjoy the hospitality for which the town was renowned.

Colette O’Connor said; “This conference is very timely here in Kerry where in recent years we have become all too aware of the dangers of Wild Fire, its an area where the learning needs to be fast to become more prepared for the increase in challenges that are now facing our wildlands. Tralee as a conference location works incredibly well for an international conference such as this given its accessibility through public transport links, Kerry Airport and also access to resources at MTU with a collaborative approach between Tralee Chamber and Kerry County Council creating ease for organising committees looking to host events in Tralee.”

“Delegates have been encouraged to soak up as much of the North Kerry experience as they can during their down time whether it’s out socialising in the evenings or availing of the many natural amenities close by such as Banna Beach and the Greenway,” added Colette.

“This week we have 130 international delegates who are experiencing Tralee, west Kerry and Kerry as a whole unlocking that potential we have as a premier tourism destination,” said Cllr Mikey Sheehy.

“I’m very hopeful that those 130 delegates will be ambassadors for Kerry when they return to their home countries.”

THE Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jim Finucane has thanked the thousands of volunteers who took part in the County Clean-Up across Kerry over the past week.

Bags of litter were collected from the roadsides and towns and villages during the twelfth annual clean-up which was organised by KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council.

“This was another fantastic turnout for the County Clean-Up and shows how civic-minded many of our citizens are when it comes to keeping the county neat and tidy.”

Continued below…

.

“Storm Kathleen on Saturday 6th meant that arrangements had to be adjusted a little bit but over the course of the past week, there was a major effort from Tidy Towns groups and local volunteers who put the shoulder to the wheel,” he said.

“It would be great to harness the involvement of members of the public this past week by getting more people to sign up with their local Tidy Towns group or start a group in their own area and to get people out and about collecting litter more often.”

Cllr Finucane thanked KWD Recycling and their team for helping to distribute gloves and bags ahead of the Clean-Up and for arranging to dispose of the bags of rubbish collected. He particularly acknowledged the way in which the planned collection times for litter were readjusted because of the storm.

Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling said they were delighted with the turnout and the positive attitude of all the participants. He thanked and congratulated local volunteer groups for their involvement.

The mixed leagues came to an end this week as we held the finals on Monday and Thursday evenings in Ballyheigue. A big thank you must go out to the Ballyheigue club for hosting the finals on both nights and supplying all the tea coffee and refreshments on both evenings.

The 4 finals being contested were divisions 2 through to 5. On Monday night the division 2 and 4 finals took place with Killarney taking on Moyvane in the division 4 final and Listowel taking on Kingdom in the division 2 final.

Killarney Division 4 league champions.

Killarney won the division 4 final on the night with a very strong showing, beating Moyvane on a scoreline of 4games to 0. This was just Killarneys first win of the week.

The division 2 final was a much closer affair and went all the way to the end with Listowel winning on a scoreline of 4 games to 3.

Listowel will now go forward to represent Kerry in the Munster rounds which will take place on the 21st of April in MTU Cork in the grade D competition and Kingdom will go forward in the grade E competition.

The division 3 and 5 finals then took place on Thursday night. Both finals on this night were being contested between Listowel and Killarney and as always a great night of badminton was had.

They took the division 3 final on a scoreline of 4 games to 0 while the division 5 final went the distance. Killarney winning the 3rd and final mixed game to secure the win 4 games to 3.

Munster Doubles and Mixed finals

The Munster doubles and mixed finals took place this past Sunday in MTU Cork. It was a long day for many of our players who travelled to Cork to represent the county in their respective grades.

Caroline Lemass and Olena Paiuk- Munster Champions

But after a long hard days work on the court many Kerry players came home with some brilliant results. In the division/Grade G competition Olena Paiuk and Caroline Lemass (Killarney) took home the gold after winning all of their games.

Eileen McCarthy and Niall O’Hanlon – Munster Champions

In the mixed doubles of the same grade, Niall O’Hanlon and Eileen McCarthy came out victorious after winning all of their games as well. Both pairs had to play each of the 5 other counties before coming out on top in their respective competitions.

It was great to see such close games and it gave people the opportunity to play people that they wouldn’t come across every weekend as they may in their own county.

Helen Browne and Deina Vesko, Munster Runners-up

In the grade D ladies doubles, Helen Browne (Moyvane) and Deina Vesko (Listowel) came home with silver medals after falling just short to a pairing from county Waterford in the final.

Munster Intercounty League finals 2024

Best of luck to all teams that are going forward to represent the county this coming weekend in the Munster Interleague finals. The teams going forward in each grade are as follows

FAOI 15: Another busy week for the U15boys with training sessions, district/development squad trials and County League games! (i) (a) On Sunday last (14th) our Division 1A team hosted Laune Rangers in Connolly Park. It was an exciting and entertaining encounter in which we had our downs and our ups….and our downs!!

Following a bright start in the opening minutes, during which we lead after scoring from a well-taken free kick, we unfortunately found ourselves on the back foot for the rest of the half. With the aid of the strong wind as well as playing good football Laune Rangers lead by 0-8 ag am sosa…1-6 to 0-1.

It was an anxious sos for the mentors but they spoke with confidence, gave great encouragement to the players agus d’éist na himreoirí go haireach leo. Things started to click for us after the restart.

Strong fielding at midfield ensured that our boys were able to work the ball well and give valuable possession to the hard-working forwards who took their scores. By midway through the half we were back on level terms…a really great comeback! What heart!

And our boys were ‘motoring’ well but…ach, faraor, ochón agus mo bhrón…Laune Rangers scored an unfortunate goal as the match reached the closing stages. Yes, we replied again and brought it back to a one-point game but, unfortunately for us, the final whistle sounded too soon. We were pipped! Another topple at Becher’s Brook!

Congratulations to Laune Rangers on their win, thanks to Billy Lacey (a former Rock underage hurler) for doing his refereeing duties with impartiality and ‘well done’ to all our players for a massive heroic effort.

(b) On Wednesday last (17th) we played away to Na Gaeil in Division 1A of the County League. Well done on a great effort, boys! Beidh scéal an chluiche againn an tseachtain seo chugainn. (ii) (a) It’s a big busy week for our B boys. On Monday last (15th) our Division 9 team hosted Kilcummin. Well played, boys! Beidh scéal an chluiche sin againn an tseachtain seo chugainn.

(b) We have been scheduled to play v An Ghaeltacht this Thursday (18th) in a Division 9 game and, so, we’re on the road again…ar an mbóthar arís! (iii) And a training session is planned for this Friday (19th) on the Astroturf pitch up in the MTU. FAOI 17: Our minors challenged and overcome Listowel Emmets and An Spá (Cill Airne) in Division 1 of the County League and everyone in the club was delighted to see them in action v Kenmare in the semi-final ar an 8ú Aibreán. Imríodh an leathchraobh i bPáirc Uí Chonghaile. Once again, we witnessed our great team spirit, our tireless efforts and our skilful use of the leather sphere! Well done, boys!

Tralee Warriors 86

Carrick Cruisers 70

The Tralee Warriors made it a weekend to remember by adding the inaugural Basketball Ireland Development National League title to the Mens U20 National League title they won on Saturday with an 86-70 win over Carrick Cruisers in the decider on Sunday morning.

The Warriors threatened to put the contest to bed early on when they blasted out to a 14 point lead with captain Aaron Fleming leading the charge with three threes and with James Fernane also in range from outside the pair shared the opening 16 points for the Tralee side.

Carrick ‘s responses came from Andrew O’Connor and when Ramunas Ramunauskas added the Warriors led 16-4 at the midway point of the quarter.

.

Steven Bowler and Padraig Fleming opened their accounts to add to the lead but threes from Killian McAdam and Rimvydas Valatonis cut the quarter time gap to 23-12.

It was Valatonis’s last action of the game as he was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury with the game delayed for 20 minutes.

On the resumption the Warriors continued to dominate the exchanges with a Josh Osayanrhion double helping to push the lead back out to 16.

Back to back three from O’Connor and a hat trick from inside from Ramnauskas pared the gap back to 7 but when Dan Bowler hit his first of the day and James Fernane flicked in two brilliant threes the Warriors looked good for their 41-30 lead at half time.

The third quarter saw a momentum shift go the way of the Monaghan based outfit as they slowly chipped away at the Warriors lead with Danas Smigelskis and Ramunas Ramanauskas tormenting the Tralee side defensive unit as they shared Carrick’s next 10 points in a row.

Dan Bowler, Padraig Fleming and Josh Osayanrhion kept the Warriors score ticking over and the double digit lead intact. The Warriors rearguard continued to try to repel the Carrick attack but Smigelskis and Ramanauskas combined again to cut the lead right down to a single score.

However foul trouble allowed the Warriors through Fernane and Osayanrhion to restore some comfort in their 59-52 advantage at three quarter time.

The Cruisers struck early in the final quarter in a bid to derail the perfect weekend for the Warriors as Ramanauskas, O’Connor and Audrius Urbanavicius levelled the contest with 6’40’’ on the clock and then took the lead for the first time in the game with an Andrew O’Connor lay up.

Steven Bowler then showed his Super League credentials adding a quickfire 8 points including an inspirational ‘and one’ score to spread the game again. Osayanrhion with a double and Aaron Fleming with yet another belter from distance saw the Warriors lead 75-64 with 2’00’’ on the clock.

Ramanauskas and O’Connor landed late scores for Carrick but Aaron Fleming finished the game with a superb cameo to add two more stunning threes and Adam O’Keeffe’s late appearance was capped with a memorable major score to seal the win.

Alan Cantwell reports on the  Mens U20 National League Final held on Sunday…

Tralee Warriors 96

Éanna 91

The Tralee Warriors U20s made it back-to-back National League titles with a 96-91 win over Éanna in an absorbing and high scoring decider at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght yesterday.

An outstanding game high 33 points from Olaf Michalczuk and a solid display of shooting from Joshua Osayanrhion with 24 allied to point guard and captain Eddie Sheehy conducting affairs from the top of the key cemented the young Warriors’ back to back title win.

Some excellent defence from Donal O’Sullivan, Eoin Creedon and Osayanrhion held the impressive Éanna attack, particularly late on, to see out the win.

Continued below…

.

The opening quarter threatened to turn into a personal duel between Warriors Olaf Michalczuk and Éanna’s Neil Coghlan as the respective sharpshooters lit up early on.

Dean Kiernan nailed an effort from outide for Éanna to start the bidding but Michalczuk responded by swotting in a hat-trick of threes to build an 11-6 lead for the Tralee side.

However Coghlan went one better by landing four majors in row to see the Dublin side lead by 5. Kiernan and captain Cathal O’Sullivan edged Éanna further ahead but late efforts from Eddie Sheehy and Brian O’Leary cut the gap to 22-20 at quarter time.

Evan Boyle takes flight to score in the Mens U20 Final

The second quarter rocked and rolled from one end to the other with the Warriors having the better of the early exchanges.

Evan Boyle and O’Leary were in range from distance and when Boyle added again and Sheehy converted after a pinpoint pass from Osayanrhion the Warriors wrestled the lead back and forced an Éanna time out call.

Out of the timeout Éanna conjured a four point play from Shanay Shah which left a single point between the teams but Osaynarhion and Sheehy would share the next 11 points for the Warriors while efforts from O’Sullivan, Nathan Comerford and Victor Lovic kept the Warriors in check.

However despite a late double from Comerford for Éanna, Osayanrhion and Michalczuk would both fire down from beyond the arc to give the Warriors a deserved lead of 49-42 at half time.

The Warriors took the initiative to push on in the third after O’Sullivan, Shah and Coghlan narrowed the gap but a double from Donal O’Sullivan and two superb threes from Michalczuk gave the Tralee side a double digit lead.

Osayanrhion with an identical double and David Lucid with his first of the day pushed the gap to 14 and Éanna again had to call a timeout to regroup.

The quick break worked as the Dublin side hit 9 for the next 12 points scored but Evan Boyle restored order for Warriors with a corner three.

Eddie Sheehy with a left handed lay up in the Mens U20 Final

However Éanna pegged the advantage back to single figures with O’Sullivan and Comerford taking full advantage from the line to cut the gap to 76-67 at three quarter time.

Éanna were on the mark early in the fourth through Lovic and another major from captain O’Sullivan but Michalczuk’s radar was still on point and he landed his seventh three of the contest to keep six between the sides.

Another Michalczuk double either side of efforts from Creedon and Osayanrhion has the advantage back out to 12 but Comeford and a quickfire six from the Éanna captain had the lead done to a single score at 87-84.

What proved to be the killer score in the contest Michalczuk cracked in his eighth three to spread the game again and when Brian O’Leary and Osayanrhion both converted from the line the gap was back out to 10 with 1’27’’ on the clock.

Éanna battled to the final buzzer and even with scores from Lovic, Comerford and Coghlan it wasn’t enough and fittlingly Michalczuk and Osayanrhion landed the final scores of the game to seal the Mens U20 National League title for the second year in a row.

By half time we had extended the lead 5-8 to 0-3. Roisin Rahilly (3) and Kate Collins (2) our goal scorers.

Minor Ladies

Ballymacelligott LGFA v Glenflesk LGFA

On a very heavy Glenflesk pitch, our Minor Ladies played their first game of the season. Wearing our change strip of yellow as it was our home game and Glenflesk play in similar colours, we were very slow to start and found ourselves 1-4 to a solitary Kate Collins point down at the end of the first quarter.

The Glenflesk goal coming from a penalty. From here though the Ballymac ladies went on to 1-4 without conceding a score to lead by a point after 24 minutes of play. Our goal coming from Rachel Creedon, with points from Jill Quirke, Anna Collins and two more from Kate, including one handpassed point.

Glenflesk were able to stem the Ballymac tide with a fine point, but Rachel Creedon notched two more goals to claim a first half hat-trick, the second after an exquisite 45’ ball/move that completely opened up the Glenflesk defence. However Glenflesk scored a breakaway goal right on halftime to leave the score 2-6 to 3-5, in favour of Ballymac, at the short whistle.

The second half began with a point for Glenflesk, leaving just the minimum between the sides. Then came the key moment that changed the game, Glenflesk were awarded a penalty…. Goalkeeper Aoibhinn Broderick stood tall and made a great save to deny Glenflesk.

After that Glenflesk only scored one more point to the Ballymac ladies 2-5. With a superb second half defensive performance from Jamie Lee O’Connor, Laura Kelly, Anna Collins, Sarah O’Rourke, and Maire Culloty, with another couple of good saves from Aoibhinn, midfield now dominated by Sarah Scanlon and Rachel Griffin, Ballymac really turned the screws on Glenflesk.

Scores coming from Sarah Scanlon with 1 goal and two frees, another goal from Anna Collins, 2 more points from Kate Collins and a second point for Jill Quirke. The hard work done by Emma Daly and Michelle O’Connor was vital to our cause and made a number of the scores for their fellow forwards.

Squad as follows, Aoibhinn Broderick, Jamie Lee O’Connor, Laura Kelly, Anna Collins, Sarah O’Rourke, Maire Culloty, Rachel Griffin, Sarah Scanlon, Rachel Creedon, Emma Daly, Kate Collins, Michelle O’Connor and Jill Quirke.

Our Next Game is Tuesday 16th April. Please Come and support the ladies.

Well Done

Well done to Kate and Anna Collins who were part of the Kerry Ladies Minor Panel who played Clare in Round 5 of Munster Minor Championship.

Kerry 3-15 Clare 1-10

Minor Boys

Rathmore GAA v Ballymacelligott GAA – Minor – Div 2 Semi-Final

Rathmore GAA 2-5 (11)

Ballymac GAA 2-11 (17)

Our Minor team played Rathmore on a damp, blustery evening in Rathmore GAA grounds on Monday, 8th of April in the semi-final of Division 2 of the county league.

In the first half, both sides went at it in a nip and tuck affair, and it was the home side who hit the back of the net first to really bring the game to life.

However, Ballymac also looked very threatening going forward with a goal line clearance saving the day for the home side. Both Jack Joy & Michael Quirke kept the scoreline ticking over but it was the clinical Jack Joy who eventually found the back of the net with a fine finish into the bottom right corner. Ballymac lead at Half Time 1-07 to 1-02.

The second period continued to be a physical battle in tough under foot conditions. Both sides got an additional goal with Jack Joy converting from the penalty spot for the visitors.

The imposing full forward Luke Griffin also got on the scoresheet in the second period. After a bruising encounter, we came away with the victory on a final scoreline of Rathmore 2-5 Ballymac 2-11.

A Notable mention goes to Jack Joy who had 2-8 points in the finish. Also, great performances from Eoin Moriarty in the middle of the field with midfield partner Stephen Turner and our full back Eoghan Joy who helped neutralise Rathmore’s full forward.

This win sets up a County Final with Laune Rangers. Please keep an eye on our social media channels over the coming days with further details.

Jack Joy (2-8) Michael Quirke (0-2) Luke Griffin (0-1)

The Minor Boys will play County League Final against Laune Rangers on Tuesday at 7pm in Austin Stacks Park.

All support welcome.

Tralee Parnells U15s that defeated Lixnaw in the Feile semi-final in Caherslee last Friday evening

U15 Hurling
After a titanic battle in Caherslee last Friday evening which saw our lads come from eight points down to win by three against a very gallant Lixnaw side, they have now qualified for the County Feile Division 1 Final. Well done to all involved and commiserations to a good Lixnaw team who played their hearts out. Final score Parnells 4-07 Lixnaw 2-10

The final will be played in Abbeydorney next Saturday evening at 6:45pm vs Ballyheigue. We encourage all members and supporters to come out and support our lads in what is only the second time the club has reached the County Division 1 Feile Final.

Kerry U16 Camogie
Well done to all our Tralee Parnells players – Georgia (injured), Siofra, Jessica, Caoilainn, Anna O, Emma, Anna C and Orla – who played with Kerry U16s in the Munster Shield Semi-Final in Caherslee last Saturday.  Unfortunately it wasn’t Kerry’s day but the team put up a great battle against a strong Tipperary side. Best of luck to Tipperary in the final.

Senior Hurling
Our Seniors played away to Crotta in Round 4 of the County Hurling League last Friday. Missing a number of regulars, including our Kerry panelists, Parnells were always going to be up against it against the reigning County Champions.

Playing with the help of a strong wind in the first half, the home side built up a commanding half time lead, mainly due to the sharp shooting of Crotta’s midfielders Shane Nolan and Barry O’Mahony. However, a much better second half performance by Parnells who used the elements to their advantage, while restricting Crotta to shooting from distance, put a more respectable look on the scoreboard. Final score: Tralee Parnells 0-15 Crotta 3-20.
The Seniors are at home to St Brendans in Caherslee next Friday at 6:30pm.

Junior Hurling
Tralee Parnells B team commence their Division 2 County League campaign away to Kenmare next Wednesday at 7pm.

Academy Training
Last Friday, thankfully the weather was on our side to allow some of our academy teams to return to Caherslee. Weather permitting, training will continue every Friday in Caherslee. Mentors will be in touch with the new training times.

Kerry Seniors
The club would like to wish the Kerry Senior Hurling team and Management and in particular Parnells players Darragh Reen and Morgan Madden the best of luck as they kick off their Joe McDonagh campaign away to Westmeath next Sunday.

Lotto

Our Lotto Draw took place Monday there was no Jackpot winner.

Open to all boys and girls from Under 5 to Under 13. Contact Michael for further information on 086-3855428. Come along any Sunday, All New Members welcome!

U5

Great turnout and more new faces for our Under 5 training again this week! Well, done to all the boys and girls who are growing in confidence and participation… keep working on lots of jumping, hopping, crawling, and running different directions at home as well as picking up a ball of any kind! Great listening and energy by Archie and Elsie this week earned their turn of the trophies! Great work boys and girls.

U7

Well, done to all our under 7’s who turned out in force this morning in MTU. There was plenty of hand passing, picking up and running with the ball. Congratulations to Jack Raggett who was player of the week on Sunday, he put in a great effort.

U9 Boys

Well, done to all the boys this morning, they were in flying form! After our warmup they trained collectively working on the pick-up, hop and solo on the run and we had new fun races before finishing with a game. The boys’ skills are improving every week which is great to see especially their hand passing. We’ve asked them to keep practising at home during the week with the pick-up and solo. See them all again next week.

U8 Girls

We had a great session today, we worked on our soloing and had a very competitive hand passing game, it is so rewarding as coaches to see how much the girls are improving week by week. We had an 8 v 8 game at the end with no quarter asked or given.

Our U8 player of the week worked very hard and showed great tenacity in the tackle and displayed great leadership and an unbelievable understanding of what teamwork is all about. Keep up the good work and practicing at home it is paying off already. Regards, Coaches.

U10 Girls

Well, done to all the girls and the U8 girls that joined us this morning for a competitive session this morning at MTU, we hope they had fun!! We worked on speed, reactions, attacking and defending which they really got stuck into. Amelia was our worthy POTW for showing great commitment and a positive approach and great skills. Keep up all the practising at home girls, and we will see you all next week.

U11 Boys

St Pats U-11’s were training in the MTU last Sunday after they had travelled deep into the west on Thursday evening last to play local side An Gaeltacht in the 1st round of the Lee Strand Co League Go Games. Many thanks to parents and coaches for helping with logistics on the night as a result we had 20 players togged out making up two teams with a mixture of our u9’s and u11’s. Both games were very entertaining with some great displays of scores, teamwork and effort shown by all our players on the night.

Playing a game with and against the windy weather conditions will be a valuable learning experience for our boys as they continue to develop their football skills. Our next game is this Thursday 18/4 away to Annascaul we will be in contact with parents with details of this fixture. It’s important you all continue to attend our training sessions and keep practicing your skills at home during the week. Naomh Pádraig Abú!!

U12 Girls

Due to the recent inclement weather, our first game in the North Kerry U12 Go Games vs Na Gaeil was postponed last week. It will now take place next Thursday at 6:15pm in Blennerville. We trained on Sunday last up at the MTU in near perfect conditions.

Noel led a fun active warm up and the girls then broke into skills stations where they worked on the solo, handpass, punt kick, high catch and pick up. We then finished with two excellent small sided games. Keep up the practice at home and we will see you all in Blennerville next Thursday for the Na Gaeil game.

U13

St Pats U13s went down battling to a strong Dingle side. Playing with a strong breeze in the 1st half, we found it difficult to find the same rhythm that had seen us victorious the previous week. The half was a titanic struggle where Dingle used every inch of their home advantage to lead 3-3 to 1-1.

Facing into such a strong breeze, it would have been very easy for the lads to throw in the towel, but they fought for every ball and showed fantastic attitude and no little skill throughout the 2nd half. A good performance overall particularly in the 2nd half gives us plenty to build on at training this Monday and Wednesday at 6.

U17

The Central Region U17 Competition Division 3 begins with our St Pats/Kerins O’Rahillys team against Annascaul/Lispole on Monday 15th of April at 6pm in Strand Road.

Senior

Our seniors are scheduled to play Tuosist in Round 4 of the Credit Union County League on Sunday 21st of April, please keep an eye on O’Shea’s Gala, old clubhouse window and Skelper Quanes for details of this fixture.

Senior B’s

Listowel Emmets were too strong last Saturday night and came away with the win. Cillian Lynch was the first to opening the scoring with a point, the opposition added a goal and a point quickly to go ahead.  Danny Greaney stepped up to reduce the gap with a point of his own, with Jack Lynch putting another point soon after.

Listowel Emmets wanting to keep the lead added another point, the next three points came from Danny Greaney, Darragh Moriarty and Jack Lynch. Half Time St Pats 0-06 Listowel Emmets B 1-02

Five points came from Listowel Emmets to begin the second half, Adrian Greaney donning the red jersey once more took his chance and got a point. Listowel Emmets took control of the scoring with five points coming from their various players.

Niall McCarthy put the final point on the board for St Pats. Listowel Emmets lead was too much and they got one final goal to secure the win. Full Time St Pats 0-08 Listowel Emmets 2-12

Thank You to Ballyduff GAA for use of the pitch for this fixture.

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.

Seniors:

We return to county league action next weekend with a home game vs Milltown/Castlemaine – throw-in in Strand Road is at 3 pm – the game will be preceded by our Div 6 fixture when we play An Ghaeltacht @ 1 pm.

Our division 6 team suffered defeat at the hands of Fossa on Tuesday night last, eventually going down by 6 points despite having led by 4 points early in the 2nd half.

Masters Golf :

Our annual Masters Challenge proved to be a huge success, exceeding all expectations and raising a significant amount of funds in a remarkably short space of time.

The fundraiser, coming so soon after our Golf Classic, quickly gained momentum once tickets were issued and attracted a large number of supporters who were eager to contribute.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to all our supporters who have dug deep over the past number of weeks ensuring a major injection of funds which will be used in various initiatives in the coming months.

The winner was none other than our former chairman, Seán Kissane who finished on ( -20) two shots clear of Carmel Daughton who was a further 2 shots clear of Shane Corcoran. Congrats to you all.

Karen McLysaght was the winner of the consolation prize of €50 with Viktor Hovland not making the cut.

For the record, Seán’s picks were: Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffle, Ludvid Agberg, Tommy Fleetwood, Colin Morikawa & Hideki Matsyuama.

Juvenile:

As training continued in Tralee Sports Complex due to pitch conditions,  our U5 Boys and U6 Girls trained indoors as all other age groups from U7 to U10 trained outside on the astros.

All age groups enjoyed a fun filled session while learning key skills and developing their skills further every week. Training will continue next Sunday in Tralee Sports Complex at the later time of 10am to 11am. Hope to see full attendance and as always new members are more than welcome to join our fantastic club.

Bring a friend:

We are running a little initiative where everyone that brings a friend who is a new member to Academy will be entered into a draw for themselves and their friend for a full Kerins O’Rahillys Kit and Football.

Under 11

U11 Boys:

Our U11s had their first game of the season in Pat Healy Park Thursday evening. The opposition was Castlegregory. The lads played brilliantly and showed that all the work on the training field is paying off. They defended brilliantly and the midfield delivered lovely balls into the forwards. Our forwards on the night combined brilliantly and took some lovely scores. Well done to all.

Under 13

U13 Boys:

Our young guns went down by 2 points v Na Fianna this evening on a scoreline of 3-09 to 5-05 . It was a game of two halves as the wind played havoc with the game –  Aaron O Sullivan stood out for KOR and Adam Quills sweet striking kept the scoreboard ticking over . Well done to all today.

Under 13

U13 KOR A Teams:

Our A team had a dominant display at home v Na Fianna winning well in the end.  Jack Hanlon and Rian Tuohy were clinical,  while Kipras Mockas and Cameron Quirke won the midfield battle. We were worthy winners on the day.

Training continues Wednesday night in preparation for the games ahead this week which are as follows:

-A team at home to Fossa Friday 6.30pm in Healy Park

-A team away to Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane Sunday evening.

-B team away to An Ghaeltacht Sunday evening.

Kerins O’Rahillys/St. Pats Minors:

Kerins O’Rahillys/St. Pats V Ballyduff:

On Monday April 1st we had an excellent win in our final league game of the campaign against Ballyduff with Oisìn Cronin turning in a man of the match performance.

A back and forth game was decided deep into injury time from the boot of Dara Murphy with an excellent winner. Breandàn Meehan and Brayden Pierce gave fantastic defensive performances and Oisìn dominated the middle of the park following the loss of Michael Enright to a head injury. Jack Costello, Ryan Onyekwere, Ben Pierce and Aaron Horgan worked tirelessly around the middle and fed the full forward line well with Dara his usual creative self and Nick in fine form scoring 1-7. Final score: KOR\PATS 3-9 v Ballyduff 2-11.

Kerins O’Rahillys/St. Pats v St Michaels\Foilmore\Skellig\Valentia

Qualifying for the Division 4 Shield Semi Final was a fantastic achievement for this bunch as they were hampered throughout the league with a number of injuries and it only got worse prior to our game last week.

Already down Jamie McCarthy and Daniel Aneke, we lost Michael Enright the previous week and Ryan Onyekwere was unavailable leaving us very light. In the end it wasn’t our day and we would eventually fall to a 10 points to 1-11 loss at home. Nick Lacey was a constant thorn in the opposition side scoring 9 points and was well assisted by massive performances from Ben Pierce, Sean O’Mahony, Aiden Hayes, Oisìn Cronin and our captain Breandàn Meehan.

Best of luck to St Michaels\Foilmore\Skellig\Valentia in their final. Our attention now turns to the Central Region on Monday April 15th at 7pm in Strand Road against Annascaul\Lispole.

Clubzap:

It is vital that all members download clubzap and add Kerins O’Rahillys to their account. Clubzap will be used for all communication regarding each age group from U5s upwards. If you are having any difficulty with joining clubzap please ask one of our committee members on Sunday mornings to assist you and we will be happy to help. Or contact us through any of our social media outlets.

Registration:

All juveniles need to be registered at this stage if you have not done so can you please register asap. If you need any assistance or have any queries please contact us through any of our social media platforms or ask a coach/committee member at training. We are happy to help.

As always we as a club are very thankful and proud for all our wonderful volunteers from coaches to committee members and everyone that takes time out of their busy lives to ensure the smooth running of our Juvenile Section thank you.

Ladies:

Huge well done to the Kerry U14 teams on Saturday that took part in the Munster LGFA U14 Festival of Football Stage 2. Well done to both teams and management. Representing our club was Taylor Kate Leane, Sophie Constable and Lexi Keane. Well done girls,  we are very proud of you all. Best of luck to both teams in their respective finals.

Under 12 girls

U12 Girls

KOR U12 girls put on a great display of football against Na Gaeil in Ballyrickard last Tuesday evening. Every girl played their hearts out and got stuck in. The tight marking of our girls gave Na Gaeil no room to play and resulted in a lot of turnovers for KOR.

A special mention to Erin Collins, who captained the team, for her cool head and super fielding skills. All in all,  it was a fantastic team effort and all the girls should be very proud of themselves. It is lovely to start the season with such a rewarding performance.

U16 Girls:

Training this week was our first training on the grass in Ballyrickard. It was great to finally start back on grass but with the horrible weather and the school trip to Madrid numbers were low

But our girls were delighted to see the “hill” again…

Massive effort was put into the gym as usual on Friday night, all our girls improving every week ahead of our first game next week. See ye all Tuesday evening.

Hard luck to the Kerry U16 B Ladies at the weekend in the Munster LGFA U16 B Championship A Final. Representing our club was Aoibheann McCarthy and Saoirse O’Connor McCarthy (Captain) ‎

Condolences:

We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Michael White, O’Rahillys Villas.

Michael was a native of Mountcollins and a proud Limerick hurling supporter. He was a keen supporter of our club, an always willing volunteer in pitch maintenance and grass cutting in Strand Road. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

We will resume our Scór journey once again in the autumn.

U11 Boys Training: Well done to our under 11 boys who had an intense training session yesterday morning in the MTU. We hope to return to our home soil on Sunday next where we will take on Ballymac in the next game of the county league.

U15A Boys: Wednesday 10th April saw the start to the County League for our U15 A team away to Kilcummin. With the adverse weather over recent weeks preparations were hampered, but the boys in green fielded a committed team and took on the challenge head on.

Playing against the wind in the first half, the hosts capitalised pinning us in and registering some fine scores. At the break we trailed by 2-8 to 0-6 with Shane O’Donovan impressing on the forty. A half time rejig helped and Na Gaeil came out of the blocks.

Eoin Tansley broke from wing back to score a fantastic goal. Ben O’Sullivan made a terrific save from a Kilcummin penalty. Despite a huge effort from Darragh O’Callaghan, Danny Brick and Gearóid Moynihan, we couldn’t quite get parity and despite putting massive pressure on at the finish of the game, three points separated the sides at the finish. THE Teams of the 2024 Lidl National Football Leagues – selected by the Ladies Gaelic Football Association’s All-Star committee – have been revealed with three Kerry ladies making the Division 1 team.

Champions Armagh, who won the Division 1 title for the very first time in 2024, lead the way on the top-flight selection, with seven players included.

Runners-up Kerry, who won the competition in 2023, have three players included, Mayo and Meath have two players each on the team, and there’s one player listed on the annual XV from TG4 All-Ireland Senior Champions Dublin.

Kerry’s efforts in reaching another final have been recognised with Team of the League Awards for Aishling O’Connell, Anna Galvin and captain Niamh Carmody.

The seven Armagh players honoured are Grace Ferguson, captain Clodagh McCambridge, Lauren McConville (Player of the Match in the Division 1 Final victory over Kerry), Caroline O’Hanlon, Aoife McCoy, leading scorer Aimee Mackin and Kelly Mallon.

Mayo goalkeeper Laura Brennan and team-mate Lisa Cafferky represent the green and red, while Meath duo Niamh Gallogly and Emma Duggan, as well as Dublin’s Leah Caffrey, are also acknowledged.

O’Connell and Carmody are the sole survivors from the 2023 Lidl NFL Division 1 Team of the League named again this year, while Ferguson, McCambridge, McConville, Mackin and McCoy were named on last year’s Division 2 team, when Armagh won second tier silverware. The winners will receive their awards at Croke Park on Friday May 3.

John Mitchels GAA Club News

.

Senior Men – Our Division 2 team play Glenbeigh/Glencar away at 2pm on Sunday April 21st and our Division 6 team play Dr. Crokes away Friday April 19th at 7pm. All support at both games would be much appreciated.

Senior Ladies – John Mitchels suffered their first defeat in this years Donal Curtin Cup at home to Kilcummin on Friday night last.

The visitors were quick off the blocks and scored the opening 3 points before a free kick rebounded off the upright to their corner forward who reacted quickest to goal from close range and put them into a commanding 6 point leading after the opening ten minutes play.

A wonderful point from distance by Shauna Hannafin settled John Mitchels and then a sweeping move involving Emma Carmody, Ciara Falvey and Ellie O Rahilly ended with Linda O Connor blasting the ball to the net from the 13-metre line to leave just 2 points between the teams.

With Tanya O’Connor and Erica O Connor getting to grips with the Kilcummin attack, Shannon Martin then found Emily Obrusnik who combined with Julie Foley who passed to Jamie Finnegan and Jamie kicked a wonderful long-range point to leave the minimum between the teams after 20 minutes.

With Diana O’Keeffe and Sarah Kilgallen beginning to drive John Mitchels forward a long pass from Kayleigh Collins found Rachel Kilgallen and Rachel played a neat one two with Ava Buckley before passing to the inrushing Shauna Hannafin who gave the Kicummin goalkeeper no chance with a low shot to the net to put the home side in front.

Just before the interval Kilcummin added a point to leave the half time score 2-02 to 1-04 in favour of the home team.

Just as in the opening half, Kilcummin began the second half with 3 quick points, 2 from close in frees to edge back in front and in the tenth minute following some great defending by Tanya O Connor and Kayleigh Collins, Kilcummin managed to scramble home their second goal to go 5 points in front.

Ashleigh Murphy was then fouled and Ava Buckley reduced the lead to 4 from the resultant free before Kilcummin scored a somewhat fortuitous goal to put them into a very commanding position.

John Mitchels then introduced Ava Sharma and Claire O Connor and the fresh legs resulted in John Mitchels again going on the offensive ending with Shauna Hannafin kicking a long rang point before Rachel Kilgallen added a pointed free to cut the deficit to 5 points with 5 minutes remaining.

Kilcummin then added another point from a free and on the stroke of full time added their fourth goal to seal victory although the margin of 9 points was flattering for the visitors.

John Mitchels now look forward to the next round of the competition which is a home fixture against Glenflesk with time and date to follow. Training continues Thursdays and Sundays.

Minor Team – Well done to our Minors who were successful in their semi-final against Listowel Emmets last Monday evening. The Minors now play Keel/Listry in the Division 2 Shield Final on Monday evening at 6.30PM in Fossa. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Gaelic4Girls – We are heading into week 6 of our Gaelic4girls programme which is a continued success! This week we will be giving out our Gaelic4girls Jerseys and having a guest coach come to our session to observe all the great work we’ve been doing over the past few weeks! Taking place at John Mitchels from 3-4pm Wednesday.

Academy – Well done to the boys and girls who attended training this week. Wonderful to see skills developing. Training continues next Sunday at 11.00 AM and bring along a friend!

Under 9 Boys – John Mitchels U9 Boys trained hard on Sunday Morning last in preparation for phase one of our Go Games. Next up for us is Beaufort Away & our boys are really looking forward to it. Our Juvenile Academy continues every Sunday Morning from 10.15am here in John Mitchels Ballyseedy All Newcomers more than Welcome.

Under 8s and 10s Girls – Training continued Sunday morning on the Astro. A great session was had by the girls. Keep up the practice at home and see you next week.

Under 14 Girls – Our under 14 Ladies played their second challenge match on Tuesday, against MKL Gaels. It was a very competitive encounter, and it gave us the opportunity to look at players in different positions than they would usually play in. We kicked some fine scores and the girls played extremely well as a unit.

We want to wish Natalia Hennig a quick recovery back to football and look forward to seeing Natalia back in the John Mitchels jersey later on this summer.

Congratulations also to Amy Noonan and Grace O Regan who stared for the Kerry U14 A team in the Munster blitz. They now have a Munster Final against Waterford to look forward to. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and new players are always welcome.

Under 12 captains with referee Sharon Roche.

Under 12 Girls – Fantastic morning of football for the U12 girls, as we got our North Kerry League underway vs Austin Stacks.

We had a challenging first half against a strong breeze with some great football played to keep things competitive heading into half time.

We began to make a few changes leading up to half time making sure everyone got equal playing time throughout the game.

In the second half we put up a few more scores on the board with well worked scores bringing the ball out from the backs.

A positive outing for the girls for the first game of the season. Stacks won the game outright but we look forward to our game vs Churchill on Thursday evening where another exciting encounter awaits.

Under 11 boys.

Under 11 Boys – We played Kilcummin on Thursday evening at home. It’s fair to say that the weather conditions were in keeping with the year to date.

It was a tough night for football with the wind and rain but despite getting soaked to the bone our boys performed very well against a strong Kilcummin team.

They battled for every ball, blocked down, tackled hard and showed great spirit and energy throughout. The effort being put in by these lads in atrocious conditions since the start of the season is to be commended and the coaches are encouraged by the improvement thus far.

Parents will receive details of the next match for this age group via Whatsapp. Training continue on Sunday. Until then kids are encouraged to practice their ball skills at home.

Under 13 Boys – Both our Green and Gold teams travelled to Keel to play Keel/Listry on Sunday evenings. Despite the challenging weather conditions some lovely football was played by all teams.

Our Gold team were successful on the evening on a scoreline of 1 8 to 1 4. It was victory for the hosts Keel/Listry for the second game on a score line of John Mitchels Green team 2 7 v 3 – 13. Thanks to all who travelled to support the team.

Thanks to our hosts for the evening and of course to our management and players for everyones effort on the evening.

Under 15 Boys – Last Monday our U15 Gold team played Keel/Listry in Rd 3 of the Div 9 County League. Both teams served up an exciting game with some brilliant passages of play. In the end, a last-second goal denied our team a victory, but they did come away with a draw on the night: Keel/Listry 3-11 – John Mitchels 4-5

Two nights later our Gold team travelled to Killarney to play the Legion in Rd 3 of the Div 1 County League. Our boys fought hard on the night, but due to a slow start were on the back foot al night.

Despite conceding early scores, the team fought hard in the second half to get within touching distance of their opponents. However, in the end we couldn’t quite get there, and thanks to some late scoring, the Legion ran out easy winners in the end. Killarney Legion 4-13 – John Mitchels 2-7

This week both teams play Rd 4 of the County League.

Monday 15th – Gold team play Kenmare in John Mitchels. Throw-in 5:45pm

Wednesday 17th – Green team play Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane in John Mitchels. Throw-in 7pm.

Under 16 Girls and Minor Girls  – Training continues on Monday night at 6:45 pm in the S&C suite and on Thursday night at 7pm on the club astro. Our Minor ladies  were due to play Dingle on Sunday evening at home, but on Sunday afternoon we were informed by Dingle that unfortunately they were not in a position to fulfil the fixture.

Training continues with this group in preparation for their first County league fixture and it’s great to have a fantastic group of ladies back in the Green and Gold at Minor level for John Mitchels. Numbers at training have been excellent and the commitment and effort at training has been a joy to see.

Bingo – Continues Wednesday and Friday at 8.30PM at the John Joe Sheehy Road. Over 18s only. ID must be provided on request.

.

IT’S become almost a tradition out in Blennerville for the past 10 years and Saturday was another fantastic day for Tony O’Donoghue Memorial Walk.

After passing away from cancer back in 2013, Tony’s daughter Andrea started the charity event in his memory with funds raised going towards the Palliative Care Unit at UHK.

Before yesterday, the walks and fundraising events organised by Andrea had raised €72,000 he hope was to surpass the €75,000 mark at the weekend. Well she smashed that target by raising €6,000 thanks to the generosity of participants.

.

The day stayed fine for the walk which set off from Blennerville Windmill just after 4pm. Afterwards it was back to Skelper Quanes for a fantastic evening of entertainment from Ross Brassil, Darragh Jive O’Donnell and DJ Mick.

Seamus O’Sullivan Butchers provided the tasty burgers for everyone after the walk which were cooked by Una Lynch and Teresa O’Brien of 2 Beans In A Box.

Andrea thanked the businesses who donated 43 spot prizes for the raffle, everyone who took part in the walk, those who bought raffle tickets, Skelper Quanes and all who helped her with the event.

REPORT: Kerry FC Stretch Unbeaten Run To Eight Games After Draw Against Treaty

.

David Moriarty report on another impressive display by Kerry FC last night in Limerick…

TREATY UNITED 0-0 KERRY FC

Kerry FC were back on the road once again on Friday night as they took on Munster rivals Treaty United in the Markets Field. Kerry came into this game off the back of last week’s historic first-home League of Ireland win.

They would go to Limerick without last week’s man of the match Sean McGrath as he picked up a groin strain in training earlier in the week.

Ronan Teahan took his place in the midfield as Kerry started with a five-in-the-back formation looking to hold onto their impressive seven-game unbeaten streak which started with that Munster Senior Cup semi-final win against Treaty United last month in Tralee.

.

Treaty United had not won a game since they beat Kerry FC 1-0 just three days before that cup game. They had fallen from first to fourth in that time and wanted to get back to winning ways as they faced the Kingdom in the Markets Field.

Corey Chambers returned to the starting line-up after a spell on the sidelines after an injury picked up in that game against Kerry in the league and he hoped he could keep the goals out of his sides net which has been leaking as of late with his side conceding eleven goals in that time.

There were over one thousand five hundred in attendance for the game in the Treaty City for what was sure to be a cracker of a match.

Treaty had a glorious chance to put themselves ahead in the opening exchanges as Mark Byrne volleyed Fionn Doherty’s cross off the woodwork.

An early scare for Kerry FC as the pressure was put on the away side from the first minute. Kerry did not let the early Treaty chance scare them and they had a chance themselves six minutes later through Ryan Kelliher.

Continued below…

.

The number nine received the ball on the right side of the box and after a few dummies, he opened space up for himself to get a shot at goal but was blocked by Lee Devitt and went out for a corner which subsequently led to nothing.

It was a frantic opening ten minutes with both sides having their fair share of sight on goal but neither being able to capitalise. Stephen Christopher got his head on the end of a Fionn Doherty cross, but his glancing header went wide of Antonio Tuta’s goal.

On the half-hour mark, Kerry FC produced two big chances of their own the first coming to Ronan Teahan who could not direct his shot inside the area on target after a lovely Sean O’Connell cross and Ryan Kelliher had another opportunity go astray when O’Connell again picked him out but again went wide of Corey Chambers’ net.

Both sides would be disappointed not to have a goal to their names but overall, the first half was quite even.

Treaty looked the more dangerous going forward but Kerry were playing some great counter-attacking football that could easily have led to a goal or two of their own.

Continued below…

.

Steven Healy had Kerry FC’s first chance of the second half just three minutes after the restart but it was saved well in the end by Corey Chambers which would become a recurring theme in the second half.

Antonio Tuta was put to work for one of the first times in the game as he superbly kept out a Lee Devitt effort that seemed destined for the goal, but Kerry’s Croatian sensation was well up for the task and kept his side level five minutes after the start of the second forty-five.

Sean O’Connell was the latest to have a shot at Corey Chambers which had a lot of venom in it, but Chambers got down well and kept the ball out with his feet.

The ball went back into the area but was eventually cleared by the Treaty defence. Kerry had their best chance of the game by far as Ronan Teahan’s effort eight yards from goal rattled the crossbar.

It was great build-up play from the visitors which led to Teahan in open space inside the box but unfortunately, he decided on power over composure, and he thumped the bar with his right foot.

Daire McCarthy was the latest to have an effort at goal this time through a free kick from about twenty-five yards out.

Although he kept his shot at a good height, his set piece went just wide of the keeper’s right-hand post. Kerry started to up their tempo and we were by far the better team for the last half an hour.

Chambers was again on hand to keep out a double shot on goal from substitute Cian Brosnan and Daniel Okwute.

Brosnan had the first sight of goal, but the ball was parried away to Okwute whose follow-up was again kept away by Chambers who saved Treaty United on more than one occasion on the night.

Three minutes after his first shot Cian Brosnan forced another save from Chambers and all the away fans were left scratching their heads as to how Kerry were not leading the game with ten minutes from time.

After a late surge from Kerry to try and get the winner they so heavily deserved the final whistle blew in the ninety-third minute and the game finished in a nil-all draw.

Kerry FC now stretched their unbeaten run to eight games and kept another clean sheet in what can only be described as an unbelievable increase in performance and durability since last season.

Kerry FC welcome Athlone Town next Friday night in Mounthawk Park as they look to get even more points on the board which could lead to a place in the promotion spots by the end of the month.

PRESENTATION Secondary School Tralee was a hive of activity on Friday morning as they welcomed both older members of the local community for an information event and a film crew to showcase the work being done by the Microsoft Dream Space Ambassadors.

The Dream Space programme at Microsoft Ireland provides immersive, research-based STEM experiences for students, teachers and communities to enhance their STEM skills alongside crucial social-emotional skills such as empathy, creativity, ethical decision making and collaboration.

As part of this program, Dream Space Ambassadors become Dream Space Specialists, offering assistance to fellow students and educators in the form of demos, training, leading small groups, or one-on-one sessions.

Continued below…

.

“We were accepted into the programme for this year, 2023/24 and we’re delighted to be taking part,” said teacher Laura Boyle, who along with Sheila O’Connell, are co-ordinating the programme  in the school with ten Transition Year students.

“They needed to show student leadership and the desire to promote Microsoft and the programmes they were learning about. The students were nervous at the start, because they thought they didn’t have the coding experience necessary, but they soon realised it was more about learning from Microsoft and them passing on their knowledge to other year groups in the school,” added Laura.

As well as teaching their skills to fellow students, on Friday, the Dream Space Ambassadors held an informal coffee morning – ‘Tea and Tech’ for older, wise learners in the local community who wanted to know more about Cyber Security

Around 17 members of the community learnt more about and how to spot fraudulent phone calls, text messages and emails, thanks to the students.

Neeve Hyland, one of the teachers on the Dream Space Team with Microsoft Ireland, explained why they came to the school on Friday morning with their cameras.

.

“We’re capturing all the amazing work the Dream Space Ambassadors are doing here in Presentation and we’re blown away by the work that they have put in, helping to spread STEM education as part of their school community.”

The Microsoft film will create a video to showcase all the work being done by students and it will be shown to other schools in about a month to encourage them to get involved in the programme. Scroll down for photos…

Is there any other scheme available to me if I do not have a condition covered by the Long Term Illness Scheme or do not have a medical card?

If you don’t have a medical card, or a GP visit card or a medical condition listed above, you can use the Drugs Payment Scheme to limit your expenses on prescription drugs. Under the Drugs Payment Scheme, you and your family only have to pay a maximum of €80 each month for approved prescribed drugs and medicines, and certain appliances.

Who can apply for the Drugs Payment Scheme?

You must be living in Ireland and intend to live here for a minimum of one year (ordinarily resident). If you have a medical card you should have reduced prescription charges and so you are not eligible for the Drug Payment Scheme.

The scheme is based on the monthly cost of prescription drugs, medicines and certain appliances for you and:

• Your spouse or partner
• Your children if they are aged under 18 (or under 23 if in full-time education)
• A family member with a physical or intellectual disability or mental illness who cannot maintain themselves fully. You need to include a medical report for the family member who cannot maintain themselves.

How does the Drugs Payment Scheme work?

After you register for the scheme, you will get a plastic swipe card for each person named on the registration form. You should show this card whenever you collect your medication or appliances from the pharmacy. You should use the same pharmacy in a month to avoid paying more than the maximum €80. You do not have to register with a pharmacy for the scheme.

The HSE Primary Care Reimbursement Service provides a list of medicines or aids provided under the Drugs Payment Scheme. Appliances covered include positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and rental costs for oxygen.

How to apply for the Drug Payment Scheme?

You can apply for the Drugs Payment Scheme online at mydps.ie. You can download a form from the HSE website or pick one up from your local Health Office or Citizens Information Centre.

• For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

Finnegan On Films: Diverse Selection Of Movies On The Box Today

.

From a dearth of choice last week, today sees a cinematic smorgasbord of treats and classics says our movie guy, James Finnegan…

First up is the original, and best, Ghostbusters (Saturday 1pm RTE2).

Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis star as three rather eccentric but gifted scientists use their unique skills and knowledge of the paranormal as freelance ghost catchers.

Directed by Ivan Reitman and also staring Sigouney Weaver and Rick Moranis, the addition of some very stylish gadgets and gizmos, and an iconic movie car, this is great fun.

.

Lawrence of Arabia (Saturday 3pm TG4) is, frankly, one of the greatest films ever made.  Directed by David Lean, it a gloriously epic biopic of British Army officer T.E.Lawrence that turned Peter O’Toole into a major star.

The story follows Lawrence’s efforts to unite the Arab nations during the First World War, a move that brought him into conflict with his superiors.  It also stars Omar Sharif and Anthony Quinn.  Don’t miss it.

In Romancing the Stone (Saturday 3.25pm RTE1), Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas have sizzling on screen chemistry in this comedy adventure.

She is a novelist who travels to South America to save her kidnapped sister.  He is a fortune hunter who helps her, and they end up on a quest seeking lost treasure together.  Do they fall for each other? What do you think?

Also starring the vastly under rated Danny De Vito, this is another fun film with echoes of the screwball comedies of previous decades.

.

In Despicable Me 3 (Saturday 7pm RTE1) the continuing adventures of Gru (starring the vocal talents of Steve Carell) sees him dismissed from the Anti-Villain League after a botched mission.

Gru decides to reconnect with his long lost twin brother – plus there are Minions!!! What’s not to enjoy!

A Few Good Men (Saturday 9pm RTE2) sees two US marines based in Cuba accused of murdering a fellow marine.

Three Navy lawyers who are assigned to defend them find evidence that they may have been acting under orders, which leads all the way to one of the most senior Marine officer in the Corp.

Acting masterclasses all around with Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Pollack, Kiefer Sutherland and the incomparable Jack Nicolson stealing every scene, especially in the court room.  It was written by Aaron Sorkin from his original stage show and directed by Rob Reiner.

Enough Said (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) was one of the last performances by James Gandolfini who plays Albert.  He embarks on a new romance with Eve (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a masseuse who is anxious about her daughter leaving home.

She befriends a bitter divorced client, whose ex begins to sound vaguely familiar.  This is an undiscovered gem that is worth catching.

One last historical biopic is Radioactive (Saturday 11.30pm RTE2) where Pole, Marie Sklodowska (Rosamund Pike), emigrates to France, meets and marries fellow scientist Pierre Curie, where their work wins a Nobel Prize – but at a terrible cost.  However, Marie is determined to continue the research.  Enjoy!

A NEW report issued today estimates that almost 2,000,000 more tourists visited the Wild Atlantic Way in 2023 than in 2013.

The Wild Atlantic Way tourism brand developed by Fáilte Ireland, was launched to the tourism industry at Meitheal in Killarney back in 2014, and over the last decade has become a globally recognised tourism brand and has provided an economic engine for the west of Ireland.

According to a new report launched today, nearly 2 million more visitors visited the Wild Atlantic Way in 2023 compared with 2013.

.

Tourism is now worth €3billion per year on the Wild Atlantic Way, an increase of 59% on 2013, and this growth has contributed to the creation of an additional 35,000 jobs, with tourism now supporting 121,000 jobs across the region.

Speaking at Meitheal, Fáilte Ireland’s flagship trade event, at the INEC in Killarney today, Catherine Martin TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, said: “This [Wild Atlantic Way] is now a household name and cements Ireland’s reputation as a must-visit tourism destination, and I commend Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland on their work in driving this success over the last 10 years.”

Speaking about the impact of the Wild Atlantic Way and developing a future pipeline of tourism business, Paul Kelly, CEO of Fáilte Ireland, said: “Domestically, the Wild Atlantic Way is our most popular region with 51% of all domestic tourism revenue being generated there.

“When we compare this internationally, based on the most recent data available, we see that inbound travel to Ireland grew by 45% between 2013 and 2019, well above the Northern European average of 25%. And the Wild Atlantic Way was a key contributor to this success with overseas visitor bednights in the region growing by 60% across this period.”

Meitheal, which has been running since 1975 got underway today at the Gleneagle INEC in Killarney, and will see over 380 Irish tourism partners pitch to 241 international buyers and tour operators from around the world.
