The Ballybunion Golf Hotel.

A HOTEL in Ballybunion is will not reopen this summer with the loss of over 80 jobs.

Owner, Micheál Carr of the Golf Hotel – a landmark building in the centre of town – cited information claiming the hotel was planning to bring up to 180 refugees into the town, as a reason for a big drop in bookings for the summer season.

A statement on the hotel’s Facebook page read: “A decision has been taken that the hotel will not reopen and after 49 years in business, employing up to 100 staff each year and been a huge supporter for local festivals and events the hotel has decided to close its doors for good.”

“The owners took the decision after careful consideration for all the loyal staff and patrons who supported the hotel through the good and the not so good times….We need to inform all patrons that no bookings will be taken for 2016 season and the planned Easter opening will now not happen. As regards the Listowel Race Week, any of our patrons can avail of hotels in Tralee for €45 per person sharing.”

The hotel will sell off all contents in the coming four weeks and private viewings will be held, with a private auction on Easter Saturday. The owner has indicated that there are no plans to sell the property. To read the full statement from the hotel, click here

THE pupils of CBS Primary have become ‘Super Troopers’ with a new programme promoting daily activity

The Laya Healthcare “Super Troopers” programme comprises daily activities which take 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be done as a family, a small group or as a class.

Each child in the school has received an Activity Journal which they will use to record their nightly “health homework”, which will involve exercises and fun activities. Each Family will have a wall chart so that the whole family can get involved.

EAMONN Fitzmaurice will be happy that a number of high-profile players are back in contention for places in their upcoming league games.

Colm Cooper, Kieran Donaghy and Marc Ó Sé are all available for selection for Sunday’s game against Down in Páirc Esler in Newry (throw-in 2pm).

Bryan Sheehan could also make a welcome return while his clubmen Aidan Walsh and Denis Daly of St Mary’s and Templenoe’s Tadhg Morley and Gavin Crowley are training with the Kerry squad after their All-Ireland winning heroics earlier this month.

Peter Crowley is also back in the reckoning but it may be a week or two too soon for him, Fitzmaurice told the Irish Independent.  Paul and Mikey Geaney, Anthony Maher and James O’Donoghue are all still recovering from last year’s surgeries.

The return of such experienced players is exactly what Kerry needs now as they travel for the vital match up north. Having lost their opening two league games, they need a win to help try to avoid a relegation battle, while alternatively, it could kickstart a revival to put them into contention for the rest of the campaign.

CBS THE GREEN transition year students and Team Bramble have teamed up to try and solve the problem of dog waste around town.

Armed with leaflets, flyers and posters, The Green lads are getting out and about spreading the word about about the dangers of dog dirt which, along with being unsightly, can cause some notable health risks.

“We’ve been trying to raise awareness around school and town,” said of the TY students, Shane Kelliher.

To tackle the issue, the class held a meeting with Kerry County Council, who provided them with funds of €500 to help them on their quest.

“We told the council what we were going to do through a proposal, they helped us out with money so we could go forward with the project,” said Shane Kelliher.

“The response was very positive from the council. We’ve used the money for stickers and posters that we will put up in businesses and around the town and especially the walking areas,” he said.

The main hot-spots for dog waste are close by for the class. Areas identified with a problem are  the Town Park, the River Lee Walkway and around the canal.

The class have been working on the project since November. Since then they have carried out a survey and spoken to vets about the health risks of dog waste.

“We noticed a lot of it ourselves,” said TY student Chris Lowe. “We did a survey out by the canal and around the square. The results we found were that the instances of people not picking up dog waste were high, but they were willing to make a change,” said Chris.

“We have followed up on our first survey and since the posters have gone up over the last few weeks, we found that dog waste has dropped dramatically,” he said.

From Team Bramble, Gillian Wharton was glad to see young people working in the community.

“A lot of the students in the TY class walk and cycle to school and would have stood or cycled through it so that’s how it came about. It’s good to see the proactive willingness of young people in this area,” she said.

Regina Reynolds, National Organ Donor Coordinator, ODTI; Teresa Looney, Tralee; Ellen Flanagan, Ardfert; Ambassador Vivienne Traynor; Con Brosnan and his niece Karen Brosnan, from Killarney launching Organ Donor Awareness week.

A GROUP of people from Kerry helped kidney donor and RTÉ broadcaster Vivienne Traynor launch Organ Donor Awareness Week 2016 which is organised by the Irish Kidney Association.

The RTE reporter has taken up the voluntary role of ambassador for the week. Like the previous ambassador Mary Kennedy, Vivienne has also a deep personal connection to organ donation. Vivienne’s nephew Martin Traynor underwent two kidney transplants,  his first for which she was the living kidney donor and five years later his second transplant was from a deceased donor.

The announcement of Vivienne’s ambassadorship was made this weekend when she made a presentation to members from the 25 countrywide branches of the Irish Kidney Association at its headquarters at Donor House, Park West, Dublin 12.

Kerry people at the event included Teresa Looney from Tralee, Ellen Flanagan, Ardfert and Con and Karen Brosnan from Killarney.

Vivienne, the RTÉ News Anchor and Courts Correspondent, who is married to RTE sports presenter and Emo native Justin Treacy,  witnessed first-hand the whole process of organ donation and transplantation from a deceased donor for her nephew Martin (now age 35) in November 2014.

This was a very different experience from five years previously when she was a living kidney donor to him.  Following the first transplant which they underwent in the UK, Martin became a father for the first time to Ted (now 3).

Vivienne, the 44 year old mother of four, also completed a Law Degree in 2014. The circle of life continued after Martin’s second transplant at Beaumont Hospital and he and his partner Mary have since become parents for the second time with a baby sister Daisy (now 10 months) for Ted.

Vivienne said; “When news came through that a second kidney was available for Martin I was at first elated but this feeling was very quickly replaced by thoughts for the deceased donor and their family. I was really touched that a family in the midst of all their grief took the time to consider someone else. I cannot find the words to express what that meant to us at that moment, on that day and every day since. It is something I think of regularly and I know Martin thinks about it every day. To see Martin come back from surgery in a matter of hours and given a whole new lease of life was one of the greatest things I have witnessed. The kindness of strangers meant so much to us that day.”

Vivienne explained that; “I was honoured to be able to donate a kidney to Martin in July 2009 following his three years of dialysis treatment.  My sister Gina, Martin’s aunt, had also come forward for testing but my kidney was chosen towards the end of the testing process. Both Martin and I made a good recovery after the operations and the successful transplant allowed him to enjoy a normal life for five years away from dialysis and in that time he became a father.  However in 2013 signs of Martin’s original condition, IgA nephropathy, returned and it started to affect the transplanted kidney. By mid-2014 he was back on dialysis and eventually placed back on the waiting list for another transplant. He was just six weeks on the list when a kidney from a deceased donor became available in November 2014.”

“I am delighted to have been invited by the Irish Kidney Association to be the ambassador for Donor Awareness Week and I hope that by sharing the story of donation and transplantation in our family we can help other families to start the conversation about their wishes surrounding deceased organ donation.”

Organ Donor Awareness Week also serves as a fundraising exercise for the Irish Kidney Association. Throughout the Week ( 2nd April – 9th April, 2016), the Association’s volunteers will be out on the streets, and in shopping centres throughout the country, selling ‘forget-me-not-flower’ emblems, brooches, pens and shopping trolley discs.

All proceeds will go towards the Irish Kidney Association’s aid for patients on dialysis and those patients fortunate enough to have received a kidney transplant. The IKA has introduced another fundraising technique. You can text “kidney” to 50300 and €2 will be donated from your mobile phone account to the IKA.

Organ Donor Cards can also be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association  LoCall 1890 543639 or Freetext the word DONOR to 50050. Visit website www.ika.ie

Brendan’s travelled to Killarney for the return leg of the contest, the first of which was played out in October. In that encounter Cougars held Brendan’s to scoring a mere 12 points. Jack Clapham distributed the ball well with guards Matthew O’Mahony and Graham Sheehy moving and passing well also. Post players Ryan McHugh and Sam McCarthy got Brendan’s first baskets scoring 6 points to Cougars 5 in the first quarter. In quarter 2, Garry Lynch drove through the Cougars defence to score 3 baskets while Nelly Olanrewaju’s speed and hard work under the boards set him up for 2 baskets.

Daniel Bowler and Sean Dillane were working hard in defence making it difficult for Cougars who were held to 6 points in reply. Brendan’s led 16 -11 at half-time. The second half was all Brendans with immense defensive effort from Denis Malihin, Liam Kingston, Ryan McHugh and Sam McCarthy.

Jack Clapham carried the ball co nfidently and scored the first basket of the half. Liam Kingston who had been unlucky to miss his first effort scored with his second and then scored another nice basket with Graham Sheehy winning and then scoring a free throw. Cougars were held to a single point in this quarter. Quarter 4 saw scores from Garry Lynch and free throw points from Sean Dillane and Nelly Olanrewaju with Cougars scoring a single basket in reply. Brendan’s prevailed on a final score of 28 – 14 displaying considerable progress made in the season to date.

St. Brendan’s 42 TK Vixens 31
St. Brendan’s got off to the better start with Jack Clapham and Graham Sheehy combining well to score 11 points while Sam McCarthy and Ryan McHugh’s defence held Vixens in check.

Sean Dillane hustled well not giving Vixens room to shoot but the visitors fought back well though and had narrowed the gap to 2 points by the end of the quarter. Quarter 2 was all Brendans with Liam Kingston opening the scoring with the first basket.

Sam McCarthy’s work under the boards earned him a good score and ball-carrier Garry Lynch cut through the Vixens defence to score 6 points. Vixens struggled to penetrate the Brendan’s defensive pairing of Matthew Hussey and Sam McCarthy only scoring 2 baskets in the quarter.

Matthew Hussey was unlucky not to score from rebounds but when Liam Kingston drove forward and was fouled and he smoothly put away the two free shots bringing the score to 25 – 13 for Brendan’s at half time.  However Vixens weren’t be so easily dismissed. They dominated the third quarter particularly through their big man Aidan Curry who scored 7 of their 13 points.

Sean Dillane went on a daring run through the packed Vixens defence finishing with a beautifully judged basket. In the next attack he dished out to Ryan McHugh who skilfully popped the shot. Daniel Bowler was fouled and scored one from the line. Graham Sheehy made a lovely steal and went on a run dishing the ball to Daniel again under the basket.

Daniel scored despite being fouled and then sunk the free throw to complete the three point score. Declan Mangan was unlucky not to score having got himself into good shooting positions. Vixens narrowed the gap further at the start of quarter 4 with a well-chosen shot.

Good delivery of the ball by Garry Lynch meant Graham Sheehy, Sam McCarthy and Daniel Bowler all got their names on the score sheet for Brendan’s. At the same time Sam McCarthy held the Vixens big man to a single basket in the quarter. Vixens Eoin O’Shea scored a lovely 3 pointer towards the finish but it wasn’t to be enough. Brendan’s held on to finish with a well-deserved win 42 to 31.

TO coincide with the launch of Enterprise Month, the final of the Kerry County Council Local Enterprise Awards was held in Manor West Hotel on Monday afternoon.

Now in its third year, Enterprise Month’s objective is to shine a spotlight on just some of the enterprise activities on offer all year round across Kerry.

The month is a collaborative initiative between Kerry County Council, Kerry Local Enterprise Office, Enterprise Ireland, North, East & West Kerry Development; South Kerry Partnership Development, IRD Duhallow, IDA Ireland, Udarás na Gaeltachta and IT, Tralee (Centre for Entrepreneurship Enterprise Development – CEED). The Month gives established businesses and budding entrepreneurs an opportunity to network and discover the assistance available to them in growing and sustaining a business in Kerry. The month has become the annual ‘go-to event’ for entrepreneurs in Kerry.

In the awards this afternoon, the top prize was won by Murphy Marine Services of Valentia. First runner-up was Annascaul Black Pudding, second runner-up Ballyhar Foods and third runner up Sean Rush Dental, in Monavalley, Tralee.

The win for Murphy Marine Services means they will go on and represent Kerry in the National Enterprise Awards in Dublin this May.

The Awards – organised by the National network of Local Enterprise Offices – celebrate the achievements of Ireland’s micro-enterprise sector.

The awards recognise and celebrate the success stories of small business owners from all over the country. In addition to enjoying extensive media coverage, National Finalists will compete for a €20,000 Prize Fund.

There is a whole host of events taking place around the county during the next four weeks.  For a full schedule click here

Gardaí Investigate Burglaries And Thefts In North Kerry Area

Cycling Ad Insert 1

garda_1GARDAÍ are looking for the public’s help in relation to burglaries and thefts in the north Kerry area.

There were burglaries in Ballybunion and Knocknagoshel and a theft of alloyed wheels in Duagh.

A house on Church Road in Ballybunion, was broken into between Thursday, February 18 and Saturday, February 20. It was vacant at the time, with the rear of the house entered and there was nothing of any value taken.

If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area at that time, they are asked to contact the local garda station.

On Monday, February 15, between 10.50am and 3pm, a house in Kilmanihan West, Knocknagoshel was broken into and cash and jewellery was taken.

The owners were out at the time and a silver-coloured saloon type car was seen by a neighbour in the driveway at the house and then leaving at haste.  If anyone saw anything suspicious, please contact Listowel Garda Station on 068-50820.

Over in Duagh, gardaí are investigating the theft of alloyed wheels. Between the night of Tuesday, February 16 and the following morning, four alloyed wheels of a Volkswagen Golf were taken from the car outside a home. They were 16 inch chrome alloyed wheels.

Again, please contact Listowel Garda Station if you have any information to help with their enquiries.

Gardaí are also warning homeowners around the county to be vigilant against home-heating oil thefts as they are still taking place in both rural and urban areas.

SPORTS FORECAST COMPETITION:

This is a reminder that the closing date for the submission of your Sports Forecast Sheets is next Monday week (7th March). Completed sheets may be given to Club Treasurer, Mike Kenny or handed in to Des Griffin in the Bar.

MINOR FOOTBALL:

Firies 0-12; Austin Stacks 1-8.

We are now definitely sounding like a broken record. Yes – it was the weather again that stole the show in Farranfore on Saturday evening (20th Feb), although Firies did, deservedly, take the honours with a one point win in their first ever venture into Division 1 of the Minor Co. League.

We played with the aid of the very strong wind and the sweeping rain in the first half and our one point lead at half time (0-7 to 0-6) usually wouldn’t be sufficient in such circumstances. And so it turned out to be. Ferdia O’Brien put over four of those seven (three from frees) with Padraig Looney, Conor Lowe and Donagh McKivergan scoring the other three.

Half way through the second half we still had that one point lead when both sides achieved only one point each in that third quarter – ours coming from a lovely effort by Harry O’Callaghan, making his first start in the Minor grade (he already made his debut last July, coming on as a sub in a Central League game against Dingle in Connolly Park).

With the elements in their favour the home side dominated the final quarter, scoring five points without reply to put them four points clear as the game entered added time. But our lads will always play to the very end and in one last attack Cian Liston was at the end of a brilliant move to slot the ball to the net and leave the minimum between the sides.

Well done to Firies who have a fine bunch of players and could have been further ahead but for some brilliant defending by our six defenders, including Dylan Casey who was making his Minor debut. Simon Draghici did very well in goals, an unaccustomed position for him.

We were unfortunate to lose the services of Shane Walsh who failed a fitness test after the warm-up. It was also good to see Joe Looby making his Minor debut. Joe was a valued member of the Senior team’s back-room staff during their very successful 2014 season.

And one man needs special mention – that’s Team Manager, Wayne Quillinan. Wayne was hospitalized some hours before the game after picking up a hand injury in a Charity Basketball game. What did he do but sign himself out and arrived in Farranfore as the game got underway and then returned to hospital again after the game. What commitment. We are glad to learn that recovery is well on the way.

Team: Simon Draghici, Dylan Casey, Brandon Patterson (Capt), Tomás Sheehy, Pádraig Looney (0-1), Ciarán O’Reilly, Odhran Liston, Philip Quilter, David Fitzmaurice, Conor Lowe (0-1), Ferdia O’Brien (0-4 – 3 frees), Fergal Ryan, Donagh McKivergan (0-1), Cian Liston (1-0), Harry O’Callaghan (0-1).
Subs used: Cian Talbot, Shane Kelliher, Joe Looby, Alan Dore, Keelan Pierse.

Our remaining games in the Co. League are away in rounds 2 and 3 – against Listowel (5th March) and Gneeveguilla (12th March) and home game in rounds 4 and 5  – against Kerins O’Rahillys (on Easter Saturday, 26th March) and Dr. Crokes (Friday, 1st April).

In the meantime, however, we are due to play Na Gaeil (at Killeen) in our postponed Round 2 game (of 3) of the Town League. The game is fixed for next Saturday (27th Feb) at 4pm.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:

For the second weekend in a row our Town League fixture fell victim to the weather – this time our R2 game against Na Gaeil. However, Stephen and his colleagues did manage to get a very useful challenge game played last Sunday, away to Killarney Legion.

They also have a very appetizing challenge game lined up for the coming weekend. Added to that, Round 3 of the Town League, away to Ballymac, is fixed for next Sunday (28th Feb) with a 12.30 pm start (this may go to 2pm – check website for updates) and a R4game, away to Kerins O’Rahillys, on the weekend of the 13th March.

In between the postponed round 1 game against John Mitchels has been re-fixed for Friday, 4th March at 8pm at the Mitchels Pitch under lights. But, as in the past, all this is contingent on an improvement in the dreadful weather that we have now endured for almost the past four months.

COLLEGES GAA:

Hard luck on David Mannix’s DCU team who, after a very impressive Sigerson Cup semi final win last Friday in which David performed excellently, just came up short in the Final some twenty four hours later – going down to neighbours UCD by just two points.

However congratulations to Club player, Breandán Caball who was part of his Marino College team that won the Junior Colleges Final against Magee College (Derry).

And the best of luck to Breandán and his Marino team as they now turn their thoughts to Hurling on this coming weekend when they take part in the Junior section of the Fitzgibbon Cup in Cork.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY:

All in the Club and the local community extend congratulations and best wishes to Mike Carmody (former mentor of many Club teams down the years) and his wife Kate (Connolly Park) who celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary last week.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS;

She is the Club’s oldest living former player and she celebrated her 104th birthday last Friday (19th Feb) at her Community home in Dublin – yes 104.  Birthday greetings are extended to Sister Jessica Doyle, who played Camogie when the Club had a very good Camogie team in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Sister Jessica (who was 4 years old when the Easter Rising took place in 1916) is related to the late Miko and John Paul Doyle, former Club and County footballers. She still has relatives living in Tralee, including Joe Doyle (former Kerryman Horse Racing correspondent), Madeline Kelly and Anne Lacey (wife of Eddie).

CONGRATULATIONS:

To Mícheál Ó Ceallacháin and Lesley Harris (former Club Scór Singer) on the recent birthday of a baby boy named Ryan.

CLUBHOUSE:

As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties. For Bookings phone Des Griffin at 086 402 0808.

CARDS:

The 45 Card Sessions continue in the Clubhouse on every Monday and Thursday nights, commencing at 9.30pm each night.

All at the Cards were sad to learn at the weekend of the death of a former card player, Con Danaher (see sympathy).

LOTTO:

Last week’s (15th Feb) Jackpot, worth €5,000, was not won. The numbers drawn were 15, 17, 18 and 23.
The €20 Winners were: Denis O’Sullivan and Killian Young, both c/o Carmel O’Neill; Susan Roche, c/o The Club; Brian Collins, c/o Martin Collins; and Helen Rowan, c/o John Breen.

SYMPATHY:

Sincere sympathy is offered to the families of the following who died recently – Nora O’Donnell (nee O’Connor), Blennerville; John Francis O’Mahony, Station Road, Ardfert (brother-in-law of John King of our Bingo and Field Committee); James Quirke, Curraheen; Con Danaher, St. Brendan’s Road and late of Castlemahon (see Cards); and Mary O’Halloran (nee MacMahon), Ballyard.

THE Kerry Masters Basketball tournament was another resounding success at the weekend with teams from all over the country and beyond coming to the town.

The competition brings past players from all over the country down for the weekend to renew friendships and rivalries and this year, Tralee Together Special Olympics was the chosen charity to benefit from the tournament.

“This is the second year and it’s going strong,” said tournament organiser, Rick Leonard, at the social held in Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Saturday night.

“We have a couple of extra teams this year, we have a local Kerry team for people to support and we hope it grows next year. The guys are all here tonight to socialise and that’s what it’s all about – to have fun and raise some money for the Tralee Together Special Olympics,” he added.

The social was also an occasion to honour the late Bruddy Burrows who died in October of last year. A special Lifetime Achievement award was presented to his family on the night. The family will have the trophy for a year and then it will be played for in next year’s competition.

Bruddy Burrows 1
Bruddy Burrows pictured in March 2015.

Bruddy was a great all-round sportsman winning All-Ireland minor medals in football with Kerry, but basketball was his real love. He was capped 25 times for Ireland and he also captained the side.

“It’s a great honour and we’re delighted to accept the award on his behalf,” said Bruddy’s daughter, Paula. “I think he would have been honoured and the fact that it’s a perpetual award allows his memory to live on. Basketball was a great love of his, in fact he gave up football to concentrate on basketball,” said Paula.

In the basketball competition itself, after two days of action, the Mayo team beat a Munster Mix side in the ladies competition, while the Trailblazers beat the Cougars in the men’s final, both of which were played in Cumann Iosaef centre.

PHOTOS/REPORT: Kerry Run Limerick Close And Show They Can Compete With Any Team In Division 1B

Mike O’Halloran was at Fitzgerald Stadium yesterday to see Kerry run Limerick close in the Allianz National Hurling Division 1B encounter…

Limerick 1-19

I WAS tweeting before the game in Killarney saying that Kerry could be a lot closer to Limerick than most people expected.

I based that assumption on the fact that Kerry had added eight very experienced players to their starting 15 for yesterday’s match from the team that was defeated by Limerick in the Munster League in January.

The replies to those tweets did not agree with me but my assumption was not that far off. As I said, the basis of the tweet was the inclusion of the eight, one of whom was Darren Dineen.

Unfortunately Darren was forced to withdraw before the game started. I believe if Kerry had the services of Dineen for this game, the result could have been different.

Kerry had to play into a stiff wind and opened the scoring when Michael O’Leary pointed. Limerick added three points two from Barry Nash and one from Cian Lynch before John Egan tapped over for Kerry.

Limerick then added a goal and eight points before Kerry’s next score from Michael O’Leary on 21 minutes. Minutes later, a Shane Nolan free landed in the square and Michael Boyle guided the ball to the net.

Limerick added three more points to leave the score at 1-16 to 1-5 at the short whistle.

Eleven points seemed a large gap to bridge for the final thirty five minutes. Limerick had lost their influential centre forward Gavin O’Mahony to injury and Kerry were gaining a bit of a foothold on his exit, but he came back on for the second half.

Continued below…

.

Jack Goulding who was not as influential as last week, had a point on the resumption, John Egan followed suit before Declan Hannon had two pointed frees for Limerick.

Then came three unanswered pointed frees from Shane Nolan then Egan and Philip Lucid, added one each – Philip had replaced Jack Goulding.

Sean Tobin had Limerick’s last point on 69 minutes, John Egan replied for Kerry from play, Philip Lucid had one from a free and Patrick Kelly hit a long range effort between the posts.

Story continued below…

Kerry could have won this game if they had a little more self belief in the first half and if they moved the ball a little more quickly to the next available man in space. Some Kerry defenders took on too many contacts before clearing the ball or passing it off, over carrying cost at least two points from frees.

This defeat did not feel like a defeat and rather than dwelling on the loss of two points, the display against one of the top teams should be regarded as a building block to make a quarter-final spot if they can defeat Wexford when they come to Tralee as part of a double header at the reopening of Austin Stacks Park on March 6.

.

Given the fright that Wexford gave Clare yesterday and the fact that Limerick gave Wexford a dusting, do Kerry need to fear anybody in this league? No they don’t.

The supporters who came to Killarney were in full voice which was great to hear. Replaced players were applauded off the pitch and when the team exited the pitch to the dressing rooms a large number of fans waited to cheer their efforts.

Last Sunday in Portlaoise was a great day, but yesterday in Killarney was a bright day, lit up by a hurling team who continue to bring pride to the green and gold.

If only Darren Dineen could have lined out, if his cousin Colum Harty had been awarded the penalty, if only, if only.

(U16) Tucker Kelly Cup:

Park B 6-1 Asdee

On a cold Thursday afternoon Park kicked off the game and attacked from the off with Aaron putting a ball through to Conor who brings it into the box but his shot is saved by the keeper. Park have several more shots at goal but they all go wide . David gets the ball rounds three players but his shot is saved by the keeper.

Conor makes a run down the wing turns into the box and slots the ball past the keeper 1-0 Park. Josh passes the ball out to Aaron he crosses to David and with a rocket of a shot from 20yards it hits the crossbar and lifts the posts of the ground and goes out of play.

The park defence Dean Jack Josh and John are playing fantastic clearing the ball every time and Asdee are not getting a look in . Conor H passes the ball to James who passes to Conor and he slots the ball into the net 2-0 Park. Edward gets the ball but is pulled down in the box penalty,John steps up to take it 3-0 Park.

Second Half: Park are well in control of the game but a rare attack sees Asdee go towards the goal but Jack dives and puts the ball out for a corner . The ball comes in high and although the park players jump for it the Asdee player connects with it and makes it 3-1.

Aaron puts a ball through to Conor who rounds two players and shoots 4-1 . Park have their heads up now and a free kick from James just outside the box goes high into the goal but the keeper manages to get a hand to it and goes out for a corner. John puts the corner in and as it drops in the six yard box there is a scramble and David manages to get a foot to it and makes it 5-1 .

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

Tralee Parnells CrestScór na bPáistí Quiz Night:

Well done to all the primary school age children who took part in the in-club event held to form our quiz team for Scór na bPáistí. As a treat for all the participants before we kicked off, the Tralee Parnells Grúpa Cheoil gave us an impromptu performance.

Best of luck to all our contestants in both the Quiz and Music Group at the upcoming Kerry Scór competition. On the night the trophy for best quiz score was awarded to Katie Dwyer, presented by Parnells Chairperson Dermot Reen.

The multi-talented Katie also participates in our Music Group on accordion and is a stalwart in defense among our Camogie players. Ger Reidy on behalf of the Tralee Parnells Scór Committee thanked parents for bringing along the children to compete in our inaugural Tralee Parnells Scór na bPáistí Quiz.

As this will be an annual event, our Scór Committee would like to receive any feedback our members and supporters may have on the quiz.

Selected on the night for Parnells team were Alesha Daughton, Anna Kerdzia, Edward Sheehy, Darragh Maloney, Donnacha Buttimer and Katie Dwyer. Katie is the “Tralee Parnells Scór na bPáistí Champion 2016”.

This panel will now prepare for the County Finals on April 17th. Thanks to all who participated in the quiz, see you all again next year.

Well Done Kerry Hurlers:

Former Parnells coach and long time champion of hurling development John Tweek Griffin put in an impressive performance on Sunday for the Kerry hurlers against Limerick in Killarney.  Great to see Parnells players in the stand watching the seniors and hopefully taking notes.

World Irish dancing championships:

Best of luck to Cian Cronin who is busy preparing for the world Irish dancing championships in Glasgow in March. Cian has been playing with Parnells for a number of years and moves up from under 13s to under 14s this year.

Welcome to Parnells:

On the first night of training for our teenagers last Friday night in Caherslee, Parnells chairperson Dermot Reen was delighted to welcome Clare native Ollie Broughton to our coaching ranks.  After a concentrated skills session Ollie gave the players a brief recap on the hundreds of ball touches each player got by doing the drills and emphasised the importance of ball work when it comes to first touch.

Thank You Volunteers:

It was very impressive to see the results of the volunteer efforts in the extremely practical storage bins that have been fitted out in our equipment storage facility at Caherslee.  Well done to Richard McCluskey who came up with this great idea, persuaded Boyle’s Hardware to generously sponsor the materials and also organised volunteer labour to deliver the work.

Marchers Wanted:

Parnells would like to have some of our players demonstrating their hurling skills as we march along in the Tralee St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Thursday the 17th of March. Please contact club officers if you are available to bring along your hurley and sliotar to show boys and girls along the route some of the things that our club is all about.

Kerry Badminton Club News

Badminton AssociationThe Tralee Presentation School Gym was the main focus of Kerry Badminton on Sunday last where the local County Badminton Club hosted their annual Paddy Sugrue tournaments which catered for Kerry division 2 to 5 players.

Over 70 players from North to South Kerry travelled to Tralee for these Lee Strand and Kellihers Mills sponsored tournaments and on the round robin basis there was no shortage of games for all players and vintage Badminton proved to be the main winner on the day with two out of the 3 finals having to go to the third set for decision.

Indeed the division 4 decider was a spectacle with two out of the 3 sets having to go to the tie break for a decision and in the other set there was but 2 points also between these worthy combatants.

Results as follows;

Div. 5 mixed final

Laura Sheahan(Listowel) and Michael Collins (Moyvane) defeated Sue Weatherill (Iveragh) and Colm Hickey (Killarney) 21-14; 21-15.

Div. 4 mixed final;

Claire Cahill (Kingdom, Castleisland) and Paul Hayes (Listowel) defeated Michelle Beasley (Kingdom) and Brendan McGovern (Annascaul) 22-20; 19-21; 22-20

Badminton 2
Claire Cahill(Kingdom), & Paul Hayes(Listowel) on their way to winning the Division 4 Tournament.

Div. 2&3 mixed Final;

Renee Lenihan (Kingdom) and James Sheehan (Moyvane) defeated Carmel Hudson (Moyvane) and Barry O’Connor (County, Tralee) 21-19; 18-21; 21-9

This coming weekend, commencing on Friday night, sees a mixed bag of Badminton fare between Kerry County Doubles Championships and Munster Inter County league action.

The weekend sees the start of the mens and ladies doubles Kerry championships kindly sponsored by CPC.IE with divisions 1 and 3 taking court in the Killarney Presentation Gym on Friday night commencing at 7.30 sharp.

Both defending pairs of champions in division 1, Ciara O’Connor and Edel Broderick in the ladies and Tom Bourke and Eric Nelligan in the mens would be termed as odds on to defend their titles and it would be hard to oppose either of these pairings.

In division 3 on league form clubs Killarney and Moyvane would seem to hold the form tag.
The Kerry championships continue on Sunday in the Castleisland Community Centre with the division 5 ladies and mens doubles to commence at 12.15.

It would be a brave pundit that would try and pick a winner here in these championships but the Killarney, Dingle and Moyvane Clubs might be seen to hold strong hands in these competitions.

MUNSTER INTER COUNTY

The Munster Inter County leagues for Grades C and E take place on this coming Sunday also. Originally fixed for Killarney the venue had to be changed as the Killarney hall will be a hive of activity on Sunday next due to the General Election count.

Now the Grade C competition will take place in Bishopstown County Cork Five of the Munster Counties will be in action here with Clare being the absentee. The Grade E competition will be held in Cappoquin, County Waterford with Counties Waterford, Cork and Kerry doing battle here.

Kerry’s Grade C team is as follows;

Ciara O’Connor Edel Broderick,Miriam Rohan,Jennifer Keane, Maeve Twomey Eric Nelligan,(player/manager) Gio Gaudino James Flaherty, Fergal Hannon, Mike Crossan.

The Kerry Grade E panel as follows; Peggy Horan, Brid Murphy, Sinead Galvin, Mairead Regan, Niamh Flaherty Donie Enright, Donnacha Moloney, Timmy Duggan, Paudie Horan, Jonathan Keane.
Joint managers; Marion O’Neill and Catherine Murphy.

Best wishes extended to both panels

Team Garveys defuse the Rockets

Team Garveys : 61
Ulster Rockets: 48

Tralee continued their recent improved away form against the Ulster Rockets in Belfast and pulled off a well merited win-61-48 against the same opposition on home court on Sunday. This was a solid display from the home side, with superb individual performances from Rheanne O Shea (19 points) and Sinead Mackessy (18 points), and an overall determination in the team to succeed, an attitude that won the hearts of their supporters.

An excellent opening quarter saw Tralee lead 22-15, with Rockets showing some signs of tiredness from their game against Castleisland on Saturday night. It was the start the home side needed and they built steadily on it in the second quarter to lead 37-26 at half time. While O Shea and Mackessy were doing the finishing, the energetic Cassandra Buckley, Deirdre Kearney and Deirdre Geaney were prominent throughout on the defensive board and very creative on offense.

The third quarter saw a nervy opening from Tralee and some very score-able shots went a begging. Rockets tried to get back into the game with American Emma O Connor and Irish U 18 international Maguire inspirational. The introduction of Maeve Barry –returning after a long enforced absence due to Cruciate Ligament damage brought a big cheer from the home support, as did her opening basket from an offensive rebound; and with Laura Hoffman, Deirdre Geaney, Amy Fitzgerald and Buckley adding to the scoreboard the home side remained in control and led by 13 entering final quarter.

Rockets threw everything at Imperials in the final 5 minutes especially and reduced the gap to 9 points at one stage-not a big lead against their 3 point expertise but Tralee showed great composure against the press and scored some fantastic baskets on the break to maintain that 13 point gap.

It was an encouraging and welcome win for the team and they can feel well pleased with both the performance and the result. Next up is their final league game of the season away to Fr Matthews in Cork next Saturday.

Team: Sinead Mackessy 18, Rheanne O Shea 19, Amy Fitzgerald 2, Cassandra Buckley 6, Laura Hoffman 5, Deirdre Geaney 4, Deirdre Kearney 4, Maeve Barry 4, Maeve Caermody, Aoife Crowley, Roisin Lucey.

U10 Girls

The u10 girls team travelled to Castleisland on Sunday for the last blitz of the season. The girls performed brilliantly in both games and showed how much they have improved since the start of the year.

Holly brought up the ball with skill and with great help from Kim and Grace, showing how much our dribbling has come on. Passing was excellent from both Shauna and Brid.

Lovely shots scored by Sorcha and Aoibhinn kept us in the games and under the boards rebounding well were Ella, Sara Jane and Emma.

There was some great work in defence by Aoibhinn and Labhraidh, winning great steals and setting up some brilliant fast breaks by Hannah Mai. All round a great team effort.

Thanks to all the parents for your support during the year and to the coach Helen and team manager Caroline.
Looking forward to next year!

Juvenile Academy

U6’s: we had another great turnout at training last Sunday. Every player put in a great training session. Rian Flynn, James Riordan and Niamh Murphy participated very well but this week for the first time, our player of the week cup was shared between twins Tommy and Hugh Costello for showing great skill and determination throughout the training session. Well done boys!!

U8’s: Another great session was enjoyed by this young group of emerging stars. Darragh Murphy, Caoilionn Culloo & Sam Jones impressed. Peileadoir na Seachtaine was deservedly presented to Gary Scollard.

U10’s: The  St. Pats under 10’s  Boys & Girls were in academy action last Sunday. We had a good turnout at training in the Pres Hall. Everyone put in a great effort practicing and improving their skills during the session with Fionn Dairo, Orlaith Murphy, Eddie Stack and Emily O’Brien giving it their all during the session. It is important that you all keep practicing, practicing, practicing your skills at home during the week. We hope to see you all at training Sunday at 11am in the Pres Hall, Moyderwell Tralee.

U12’s: Training continues on Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on our  astro turf.

U14’s: Training continues on Thursday from 6.00pm to 7.00pm on our  astro turf.

U16’s: Training continues on Friday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on our astro turf.

Girls: Outdoor training to resume as soon as the weather improves.

Seniors

Eventually our senior team managed to get some competitive action last weekend where they played 2 St Brendan’s League games vs John Mitchels & Churchill.

We played Div 1 team John Mitchels under lights in their new facility in Ballyseedy last Friday night. The proverbial game of two halves ensued but it was surprising to see St Pats put in such a strong performance in the first half, assuming a lead of 1-9 to 0-4 point at the short whistle.

Our goal coming from Breandáin Savage. However, our boys tired in the second half and Mitchels emptied the bench with some of their more established players entering the fray and they took control of proceedings. The fact that they have just come off a promotion playoff meant they had a lot more work than St Pats and it showed in the final third as they ran out winners on a score-line of 3-10 to 1-12.

On Sunday, we travelled out to Churchill’s new pitch and we ran out comfortable winners in testing conditions. The pitch was in immaculate condition but a strong cross field wind made it difficult for both sides. Churchill fielded a very young but keen side and the game was evenly poised until a speculative shot by Paul McMahon ended up in the Churchill net just before half time. St Pats upped the ante in the second half and pulled away from the home side. The final nail in the Churchill coffin was a well worked goal finished by Willie Hurley.

Overall, it was a good weekend with over 24 players getting game time. Next week, we are scheduled to play Na Gaeil in Rd 5 of the Brendan’s League. However, as of now, no pitch is available as both Killeen & our own pitch are currently closed. Please keep an eye on the club Facebook page for more details.

IT was a sellout event at the Brandon Hotel on Saturday for the Lee Strand Milk Protein+ Katie Taylor v Queen Underwood event and there was no shortage of entertainment throughout the night.

Great credit must go to the sponsors and Tralee Boxing Club for running such a well organised event enjoyed by all present.

Fight fans arrived from early evening to see the action as members of Tralee Boxing Club  fought boxers from clubs around the county and beyond in nine bouts before the main event.

Earlier we brought you action from the Katie Taylor fight (click here for previous story) but we were also there to capture the atmosphere and take shots from some of the other bouts.

A GREAT effort by the workers in An Post in memory of a late colleague raised €2,500 for the new palliative care unit at University Hospital Kerry.

The workers took to the town centre to sing Christmas carols with local musicians and  they entertained shoppers.

Mike O’Callaghan said they were delighted to raise funds for the new Palliative Care Unit especially as a colleague of theirs, Jerome O’Leary, had passed away from cancer in the autumn of last year.

“We collected €2,500 over two days. We did about five hours in total, so €500 an hour isn’t bad for a group of fellas who can’t sing!” said Mike. “It was all because of Jerome who passed away in October. That was why we chose the palliative care unit this year,” said Mike.

Ted Moynihan of Kerry Hospice, was very appreciative of the efforts of An Post workers.

“We appreciate what ye did going out in the bad weather before Christmas,” said Ted, who explained that the new building will cost €6.2m to build and it’s all made possible due to the fundraising that is done around the county.

YESTERDAY we told you about the great fundraiser in Ballyroe Heights Hotel for Killahan NS (click here for previous coverage).

Well it was an evening of high fashion on and off the catwalk as ladies enjoyed the spring/summer fashions on show from many local boutiques, with a best dressed lady competition ensuring the audience looked equally as stylish.

In the end, Claire Fitzmaurice won the prize sponsored by Connollys Jewellers and Rockalilly, while best dressed man was Mervyn Peevers who collected goodies courtesy of Suits Select and John Fitzgerald Jewellers.

There was also a raffle prize of €500 worth of home heating oil and that was won by Neil Doherty from Ardfert.

IT was a full house in the Brandon Hotel Conference Centre last night for the Lee Strand Protein+ Milk Katie Taylor v Queen Underwood bout.

The Olympic champion recorded her 61st consecutive win in the ring by beating the American on points and there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the evening generated by the 800 people present.

Fresh from beating Serbian native Jelina Jelic at a show in the Mallow GAA Complex the night before, the Irish hero got a rapturous reception when she entered the arena and over the four rounds she won the fight on an unanimous decision against Underwood, who indicated it was her last fight as an amateur.

Here’s some action shots from the fight (below) and we’ll have many more photos from some of the other bouts and people attending the event later…
