ENGLISH comedian, Bill Bailey, is coming to Kerry during the Christmas season to have a lark.
Bailey is a multi-award-winning British comedian, songwriter, musician, actor, presenter and animal welfare campaigner and for the fist time ever he brings his ‘Larks in Transit’ Show to the Gleneagle INEC Arena on December 28.
Larks in Transit is a compendium of travellers’ tales and the general shenanigans of twenty years as a travelling comedian.
With musical virtuosity, surreal tangents and trademark intelligence, he tackles politics, philosophy, the pursuit of happiness, death metal, ringtones… and an excruciating encounter with Paul McCartney.

Two decades of life as a comic filtered through what the Daily Telegraph calls ‘the brainiest comic of his generation’.
Bill’s extensive career ranges from international stand-up comedy tours to performing on television, film and radio, duetting at HRH Prince Charles’ 60th birthday with Robin Williams, and performing at the Royal Albert Hall with a full BBC Concert Orchestra.
He played Manny in the BAFTA award winning Black Books, and he was for many years team captain on the popular BBC music panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He is a regular panellist on the hit BBC panel show QI, along with writing and presenting numerous TV wildlife documentaries.

AFTER two hit comedy dramas in the past couple of years, the trilogy will be complete later this month when ‘One Ordination and a Donation’ will be performed at Na Gaeil GAA clubhouse.
The play will be stage on Wednesday, February 27, Thursday, February 28 and Saturday, March 2, and the actors are rehearsing their lines from the pen of the talented Mary Quirke from Oakpark.
Her previous efforts, ‘One Wedding and a Funeral’ and ‘One Murder and a Christening’ were sellout successes and this is likely to follow suit.

A modern day miracle occurred at the end of the saga, with the transformation of Holy Water into brandy.
Mary continues the story from this point, and the ensuing chaos and hilarity will surely lift the clubhouse roof on all three of the performance nights.
“It’s the same characters as before and we give a recap on what happened in the two previous plays at the beginning,” said Mary Quirke. “All funds raised go to the club and there’s refreshments afterwards too. The actors are very good, we’re at rehearsals since October and there’s a lot of work and organising involved.”

It’s bound to be a great night so get to the Blasket.
TOP comedy acts are returning to Tralee over the next month with three shows on the way in The Blasket Bar on Castle Street.

Barry Duggan of The Blasket explained why they are bringing high-calibre stand-up acts to the town.
“It’s just something different for town where people can come down and enjoy over two hours of comedy and a few drinks. There’s been a massive response to the shows we’ve had so far,” said Barry.

The award-winning comic has shared the stage with such luminaries as Bill Burr, Dylan Moran, David O’ Doherty, PJ Gallagher and Neil Delamare.

On radio, he has been a regular panelist for the RTE Radio 1 Show The Second Republic, and a guest panelist on BBC’s The Blame Game. For tickets to see Chris Kent in The Blasket, click here

HERE’S something different to go to on a Friday night…and it’s free.
‘The Freedom Machine’ by Elaine Gallagher is a hilarious audio-visual stand up show, which celebrates 100 years of women’s suffrage by exploring the revolutionary bicycle.
This is a free event (limited spaces) and will take place at O’Donnells, Mounthawk, on Friday, June 29 at 8pm.
Elaine Gallagher is Co-Director of “The Comeback” feature film and a writer for RTÉ’s “The Mario Rosenstock Show”. This work premiered at Smock Allies: Scene + Heard 2018.
Continued below…
The history of cycling mirrors the history of feminism in a fascinating way. As the call for women’s suffrage grew towards the end of the 1800’s, so did women’s use of the bicycle, and both were seen as threats to the established social order.
The notion of women travelling around unchaperoned was at best challenging, and for many unacceptable and dangerous. Is it any wonder when bicycles were a source of unprecedented liberty for so many women, or as Susan B. Anthony called it, “a freedom machine”.
Elaine’s show will chart the origins of the bicycle and its role in granting freedoms to women, including its significant role in female suffrage.
It will also explore the parallels between cyclists and women, and motorists and men, i.e. motorist/male entitlement, being subject to abuse and potential violence, lacking the safe facilities that we need in this day and age, and so on.
For those interested in cycling to this event, a group will be meeting at 7.15pm in Tralee town square for a leisurely spin out along the Tralee-Fenit Greenway.
This event is presented as part of Bike Week with the support of Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership, Kerry County Council and non|faction
A TRALEE comedian who posted a video of why he hates rugby has received a mixed response to say the least…but he has got over 31,000 views so far for it!
Shane Clifford has been posting up some very funny stuff over the past few years and his latest, in which he describes the rugby fan you would find in a pub, has provoked a great response with some people taking his view to heart in the 800 comments underneath the Facebook video.
Shane has over 10,000 likes for his Shane’s Brilliant Page on Facebook and performs stand-up in venues around the country. Have a look below and see what you think of his rugby views…
IT’S a busy day for gig announcements in the INEC.
This morning The Coronas revealed they are coming in December and now Mario Rosenstock is set to take in a date in the Killarney venue for his one-man stage show ‘In Your Face’ on May 4, 2018.
The brand new 2018 show is promised to be bigger and bolder than ever and it’s Mario’s most interactive too, so prepare to get up close and personal if you’re in the audience.
Continued below…
To date Mario’s live tours have sold over 200,000 tickets with a record five consecutive sold-out nights at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre, Dublin.
Mario has spent eighteen years on the legendary Gift Grub on The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM. He has starred in three smash-hit TV series of The Mario Rosenstock Show on RTE TV. Mario has been awarded twelve national radio awards and is a member of Irish Radio IMRO Hall of Fame
Tickets from €35.00 will go on sale this Friday 13th October at 9.00am from Ticketmaster and venue box offices. (Additional charges may apply, in certain circumstances when using cards or local ticket agent).
TODAY FM duo, Dermot & Dave will come to Kerry next year as part of a nationwide comedy tour.
The lunchtime presenters Dermot Whelan and Dave Moore will hit the stage at the INEC Killarney on March 16, 2017.
Continued below…
Entitled the ‘Ah Sure Lookit’ tour, the two lads debuted their comedy show at the first Cork Comedy Festival in September of this year and the following month at the Vodafone Comedy Carnival in Galway. Both shows sold out in record time.
This is the first time the pair has taken to the stage for a comedy gig but they’re well used to each other, having worked together in radio for over 12 years. The tour will take in almost every corner of Ireland with 15 dates scheduled from March to 2017.
Asked what people can expect from their stand up show, Dermot Whelan said: “Imagine a bonkers radio show that grows legs and arms and a head and starts firing out craic and waving its arms like an angry King Kong in that movie. Not even close.”
Dave Moore commented: “It’s all our listeners’ favourite characters, stand-up, improvised comedy, music and an interactive gardening segment – what’s not to love?!”
Listeners to The Dermot & Dave Show on Today FM will be familiar with their weekly ‘Ah Sure Lookit’ feature where friend of the show ‘Mac from Carlow’ gives random clues and people are asked to guess what it is Mac is talking about. Although the comedy show has nothing to do with the feature, the lads just like the name!
Tickets €29 are on sale from www.inec.ie, www.ticketmaster.ie or from the INEC Box Office on 064 6671555.
Christmas party season is not too far away and venues all over town are pulling out all the stops to attract businesses, clubs and groups of friends to their establishments.

A STAR of the ‘Republic of Telly’ and ‘Bridget and Eamonn’ shows is bringing his stand up show to Il Forno Restaurant on Courthouse Lane on this Saturday night at 8pm.
Edwin Sammon plays Father Gabriel in the Republic of Telly spin-off, Bridget and Eamonn, which has recently shot a second series on RTE.
The Offaly funnyman joined Republic Of Telly earlier this year and has presented a segement on the satirical show since.
Edwin Sammon, is the latest known Irish comedian to perform Il Forno recently, along with well-attended shows from David McSavage and Joe Rooney. For tickets to the event, call Il Forno on (066) 719 5402.
A NIGHT of comedy and tapas was held for charity on Thursday at a newly opened upstairs venue at Il Forno Restaurant.
It was the first time the upstairs space was used and a good crowd of people enjoyed the entertainment and great food.
Seamus Kelly was the entertaining MC for a night where people enjoyed performances from Graham Storey, Sir Stevo Timothy, Sinead Nora McGrath and more, while enjoying two tapas and glass of wine/beer for €25.
It was all part of a Castlemaine man’s efforts to raise awareness of suicide and mental health issues.

Gary O’Dowd started The Bearded Man’s Battle For Suicide Prevention earlier this year. He lost his father Maurice to suicide last year and wanted to do something positive to raise awareness.
“My aim is to promote suicide awareness as much as possible. The whole plan was to honour my father who always had some form of facial hair. When he died I said I’d grow a beard to honour him. Then I thought maybe I can do more with this and here we are tonight,” said Gary.
It’s all building up to another event in Jack Duggan’s Bar, Castlemaine on Saturday, July 16. ‘Shave or Grow’ asks the public if he should keep or shed his hairy appearance. The night will include music, DJ, spot prizes and the chance for you to nominate your friends to get waxed, it’s sure to be a good one.
Edel Hobbert of South West Counselling who run the Kerry Lifeline for Suicide Prevention was grateful to Gary for his efforts.
“We’re delighted that Gary has organised this because the funding is what matters on the ground so we can sustain and maintain our services,” said Edel on the night. Some of the proceeds also went to Console. To find out more about Gary O’Dowd’s campaign see his Facebook page hereScroll down for photos…
THERE’S something new on the way for diners in Tralee this summer, as a restaurant hatches plans to combine culture and cuisine in a new upstairs venue.
Il Forno Wood Fired Pizza and Italian Restaurant at Courthouse Lane hosted the first of many planned events with a night of comedy and tapas, which ended up being sold out.
Forty-five customers paid €15 for two Italian tapas dishes, a glass of wine or beer and the entertainment on the night.
Patrick J O’Shea, who has worked with Des Bishop, headlined the first event which was MC’d by Seamus Kelly of the KY Comedy Alternative. Also appearing was Sean Marshall, the ‘Chameleon Comedian’ and Stevenevets.

“It’s a fantastic deal, you’re getting your tapas, glass of wine or beer – which is matched to your choice of tapas – and the comedy entertainment,” said Seamus. “I don’t think anyone in Kerry is offering this type of alternative night out,” he added.
Mike Moriarty of Il Forno said it’s the first in a series of events which will be launched at the opening of their new upstairs space next month.
“It will be called ‘The First Floor’ and it will have a cultural element to it,” he said. “We aim to have something different every week, whether it be comedy, spoken word, musicians etc. We’re putting in a projector for film screenings and we can host art installations there. People can come and enjoy their meal or tapas with wine and a bottle of beer and relax,” he added.
The initial plan is to hold cultural events on a Thursday night, but it could be extended to Fridays depending on demand. The opening of the new space is scheduled for June 2, when there will be another night of comedy. Check their Facebook page closer to the date for more details.
A TRALEE standup will perform his first hour long show in the renowned Whelans venue in Dublin next month.
It’s a big stepping stone for Oakpark man Ronan Grace, who has been honing his craft in the capital for the past eight years.
Clocking up on average 100 shows a year, his comedy has featured on RTE’s Republic of Telly and its Comedy Shorts series of sketches.
Traleetoday.ie caught up with Ronan for a chat about the new show, funny Tralee people and chips.
“I thought I’d be more anxious about it,” said Ronan Grace.
Continued below…
“I’m really happy about what I’m going to do, most of it is done so I’m feeling confident about the whole thing. I’m glad I took it on and I should have done it sooner.”
The show, ‘I Think I’m Here Now’, will see Ronan meander through the many “different failures” of his life, tied together with a love of traditional chips.
“I do about 20 minutes on what has happened to the modern chip. It doesn’t sound funny, but when people hear it they really get it!”
“Now, when looking at a restaurant menu you see ‘pomme frites’ or ‘patatas bravas’ or ‘loaded potato skins’. All of this started with wedges, which are really just a spicy chip. It’s all gone a bit ridiculous. I just want a nice plate of chips,” he said.
“The show is a bit of a rant. Stand-up is a good way of getting things off your chest. I think I’m at my funniest when I’m at my angriest.”
Though Dublin is now very much Ronan’s base, the Oakpark native still appreciates the humour of his home town.
“It is a very funny town. There is so many funny people, they are so quick and just basically funny. For a town that has produced so many hilarious characters, there doesn’t seem to be too much uptake for stand-up. Tralee people are probably too smart to do it, they realise it’s a big ball of s**t in terms of a career!”
“I always thought it was because, if you were in town and were to say ‘I’m a comedian’ that’s kind of like saying ‘I’m funnier than the rest of you’ and Tralee is not a good town to stick your head above the parapet!”
‘I Think I’m Here Now’ is on Thursday, February 11, in Whelans, Wexford Street, Dublin.
Here he is featuring in a Republic of Telly sketch recently.
A TRALEE IT student’s sometimes dark and often peculiar brand of humour has been gaining momentum online and from famous comedians (see videos below).
On Facebook, Shane Clifford’s, short comedy videos on his site ‘Shanes Brilliant Page‘ have been watched a combined 359,953 times.
The sketches have even earned the attention of The Rubberbandits who have shared Shane’s video to their 300,000 plus fans on Facebook.
Continued below…
Also a fan is Scottish comedian, Limmy – whose BBC series ‘The Limmy Show’ has a huge cult following across Britain and Ireland.
“This lad is consistently nailing it,” was the message from The Rubberbandits when last night the Limerick duo shared Shane’s latest offering ‘Shane’s Brilliant Variety Hour – PILOT’.
Working mainly out of his kitchen, Shane began posting videos online in Summer 2014. So far the video ‘Aw Class’ has proved the most popular, with almost 100,000 views.
Another sketch that has had a good response is ‘The Crow’ which features a shirtless Shane, musing about the intelligence and personalities of crows.
The crow video even sparked a minor internet spat with Buzz from Hardy Bucks, who was also doling out crow-related material.
But any allegations of plagiarism was smoothed over and thankfully no was hurt.
A FORMER Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí student is the director of a new comedy series which is featuring on RTE 2 on Monday nights.
Shaun O’Connor is the director of Sketch! – a (you guessed it) comedy sketch show filmed in Cork city.
The latest episode screened on Monday night featured RTE personality, John Creedon, and it’s proving really popular. Traleetoday.ie caught up with the Castleisland man to learn a bit more about Sketch! and the positive response it has received, especially on social media.
“It’s been great, we try to create as much of a positive social media presence if we can, the reaction in general has been really, really good,” said Shaun.
Last year, Shaun directed the comedy short ‘(R)onanism’ a winner of RTE’s ‘Storyland’ competition. This followed on to producing sketches for RTE’s ‘Comedy Bites’ series and ultimately the series Sketch!
“One of the sketches we shot for ‘Comedy Bites’ was with John Creedon, but it ended up getting such a good reception we decided to put into the show.
John was brilliant, we approached him with an idea and he was well up for it,” he said. Now somewhat of a collaborator, John Creedon, also features in the short film ‘Pat’ starring ex D’Unbelievable, Jon Kenny, which Shaun is currently in post-production with.
Despite there being a pull in the industry to relocate to Dublin, Shaun, is firmly rooted in Munster which he sees an advantage over heading to capital to further his craft.
“There is certainly more competition in Dublin, but the fact we’ve built the cast and crew from dozens of projects at this stage, we have a crew we can call on and do a fantastic job.”
“There is a small bit of pressure to do the Dublin thing, but as long as we’re able to create the productions to a high standard in Cork we’ll stay. The fact we’re Munster-based works in our favour as well because there is such good support down here for projects, even among the media and on social media people really do put an effort into promoting work that is produced locally and sharing it.” Check out Sketch! on the RTE Player here HERE
THE stage times have been announced for the ‘Killarney Festival of Music and Food’ at the end of June which promises to be a fantastic weekend.
The family-friendly boutique festival will be taking place at the picturesque Killarney House Demesne on the weekend of June 27 and 28.
The band everyone is waiting for, Duran Duran, will take to the stage on Sunday night at 10pm, preceded by Scottish act Texas at 8.15pm.
The previous night will see The Stunning headline the main stage at 10pm. (See the images below for the full timetable of the line-ups).
Over 60 Irish and international musicians and bands will perform at the Killarney Festival of Music & Food including Duran Duran, Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra featuring Gilson Lavis and guest vocalists Marc Almond, Ruby Turner, Louise Marshall & Mabel Ray, music legend Burt Bacharach, TEXAS, The Proclaimers, The Undertones, Father John Misty, Walking On Cars and Damien Dempsey.
On the comedy stage Neil Delamere, Apres Match, Jason Byrne, Foil Arms & Hog and Ronan Grace will be amongst the talent providing the laughs, while the food tent will feature Ireland’s top chefs.
A STAND-UP comedian, born and raised in Ard Na Lí Oakpark, is beginning to make waves on the Irish comedy scene.
Ronan Grace along with his writing partner, Trevor Browne, have written and performed several comedy sketches that will feature on RTE’s ‘Comedy Bites’, comedy shorts series on RTE Player.
Each week, a new set of characters will emerge from Ronan and Trevor’s collective brain-boxes with the ambition of making a sketch series that will feature on your TV sets.
“We’re delighted to get the sketches out which we have been writing over the course of the last two years,” said Ronan.
Ronan has been learning his craft on the Dublin comedy circuit over the past six years. There’s been a few bumps along the way, but he’s beginning to plough his own furrow on the notoriously difficult stand-up scene.
“It’s one of those things with comedy; there aren’t too many overnight successes. Thankfully it’s coming to fruition after a fair few years of hard work. Some of it was tough, but it most of it was pretty enjoyable. It beats a real job!”
Wheels are in motion for the duo to produce a pilot sketch show for RTE called ‘The lads of Comedy – Comedy Sketch Show’ which may air around Christmas.
“We’re hoping the sketches will give people a taste of what those characters are like so we can do a pilot on real television! Hopefully there will be a positive reaction. We’re currently in a development phase moving towards a pilot being shot,” he said.
Over the weekend, Ronan was performing at the Cat Laughs festival in Kilkenny and will be performing at festivals around Ireland throughout the summer.
For our Dublin based readers, you can see Ronan perform in Whelan’s on Thursday night with The Lads of Comedy.
You can watch Comedy Shorts here on the RTE player.
THE first night of Kerry’s newest and only comedy club, The KY Comedy Alternative, took place in the Abbey last Thursday night.
The night saw sets from ten comedians, some from Kerry, some from Limerick and one from Mayo. Despite some issues with sound, the night was a roaring success and €221.49 was raised for Tralee Soup Kitchen.

“We want to say a big thank you to everyone who came out to our first night last night, the night proved to be an absolute blast I’m so thankful to all the great and wonderful comics who came along on the night as well as The Abbey Inn and their staff,” said organiser, Seamus Kelly.

IT has been announced that one of Ireland’s top comedians David O’Doherty will be playing a show in Siamsa Tire on Saturday, March 21.
The Dubliner billed as the “the forgotten Sugababe” and “the bad boy of Zumba” will bring his peculiar world whimsy to a Tralee audience with a new hour long show.
A former winner of the prestigious, Edinburgh Comedy Festival Perrier Award for best comic, he is also regular on UK panel shows, QI, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
O’Doherty is noted for combining his comedic performance with tunes played on a miniature electronic keyboard he has had since childhood.
