IF she was tired after the night before, Jennifer Byrne wasn’t showing it when she turned up in the Town Park for the traditional photoshoot in the Rose Garden.

The tall (5ft 11″) 23-year-old junior doctor from Offaly patiently posed for the cameras and signed autographs for young well wishers for close to an hour, all the time in the good humour you would expect from someone who had been announced as this year’s winner.

She also spoke about how the people of Tralee had been so good to her and her fellow Roses since they arrived last Tuesday.

Continued below…

.

“The people of Tralee have been unbelievably welcoming. We were completely blown away by the support. The parade was fantastic, it was the best experience of my life…well, last night topped it all!” said Jennifer.

“I’m delighted to be here and I’m delighted to represent them. Whatever I can do for the Rose of Tralee, I’ll do my very best,” she added.

She described what makes the festival so special.

“I don’t think there’s anything like the Rose of Tralee. It’s a unique festival that brings people together from all over the world. So many of the girls [Roses] have had families come together this week, so it’s all about bringing people together and celebrating Irish culture. Everybody seems to be having an absolutely fantastic time,” she said.

And then she was off for a day of engagements around the town before making an appearance at the Killarney Races on Wednesday evening. She’ll have a busy year ahead. Scroll down for photos…

Speaking straight after the announcement, Jennifer Byrne said: “I think my heart is about to jump out of my chest but I’m really, really excited but I genuinely can’t believe it, it’s fantastic. My first thought was ‘did Dáithí actually just say my name, I wasn’t really expected it at all’. I thought ‘this is going to be incredible’. Maggie McEldowney is an unbelievable representative for the Rose of Tralee and I’ll be asking her for a few tips because I have got big boots to fill now.”

Jennifer (24) was presented with her sash and tiara by 2016 Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney and Robbie Scanlan, Managing Director of Tipperary Crystal, lead sponsors of the Festival.

She was greeted by thousands of people on Denny Street  for the Midnight Madness Parade and fireworks display.

Jennifer Byrne has encouraged Irish women everywhere in the world to consider entering the 2018 Rose of Tralee: “It has been absolutely fantastic. Even meeting up in Kildare we had a great time getting to know the girls, the very first night we got into our county jerseys and comfortable clothes and we really bonded as a group from there. From Kildare we came to Tralee and the Festival has been incredible, the parade was definitely the most fantastic experience of my life – well up until now anyway. I have enjoyed every minute of it and I have made such good friends with the girls and they are all incredible women”

Next year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place from 15-21 August and online Rose applications are now being accepted at www.roseoftralee.ie

TraleeToday.ie’s coverage of the Rose of Tralee International Festival is brought to you by AIB Tralee…

.

It’s the final day of the festival but why not see it off in style. Here’s a few things to get up to today…

1. Family time…

Family Town is still in full swing in the Town Park with loads of attraction for the little ones. There’s a teddy bears picnic/fancy dress party between 3pm and 4pm.

At the same time there’s a Frozen party in the Square. Meanwhile there’s busking on the streets and the market will be buzzing again.

2. Head to Birds Amusements…

It’s always the highlight of the festival for young ones and this year it’s been no different with throngs of people in the Brandon car park and across in Ivy Terrace.

.

3. Music of the night…

There’s music all over the streets again tonight. The Kilkenny’s bring folk to the Square Stage, The Righteous Dudes are in Denny Street and there’s music in loads of bars around town. No.4 On The Square has Chapter 2 while the Brogue has Ross and Noel.

4. Midnight Madness…

You can greet the new Rose of Tralee when she and the other 63 Roses are on parade after midnight. It all ends with a massive fireworks display.

Thomas Lynch from Castleisland.

THOMAS Lynch, a business consultant from Castleisland, topped the poll among Roses and Rose Escorts to become the 2017 Rose Escort of the Year at the Rose of Tralee International Festival.

Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result live on RTÉ One television last night in the Festival Dome and presented him with a cheque for €1,000.

It’s the second time in three years that a Kerryman has won the title. Shane Kenny from Churchill was the 2015 winner.

Continued below…

.

There are 64 Rose Escorts at this year’s Festival and Thomas was paired with the Kilkenny Rose, Tara Roche for the first three days of the Festival, followed by the Dubai Rose, Lisa O’Donohue for the remainder of the event in Tralee.

Thomas, who was sponsored by Grant Thornton, said: “It’s uplifting to see how the children and the town interact with the Roses and the joy that they are experiencing. When we pull out a Rose’s chair, when we hold their hands coming down off the bus and when you see them kind of giggle and look back at the other Rose and say, ‘Oh, I could get used to this…’, that kind of lifts our spirits. It means we are doing something right and we are making the week magical for them.”

Thomas is passionate about rugby, particularly tag rugby, and while he played basketball and tennis from a young age, he enjoyed trampolining in college before discovering the exciting world of rugby a few years later.

Daniel McLaughlin, a carpenter from Donegal sponsored by McLaughlin Taylor Dry-lining and Paul Fitzgerald, a radio presenter from Limerick, sponsored by Gretta Gibbs and Limerick’s Live 95fm were also shortlisted for the Rose Escort of the Year award.

Nearly 200 men aged between 21 and 30 applied to become Escorts at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival and following a detailed interview process, the final 64 were selected to take part in a Boot Camp weekend in Kerry to help them prepare for a busy week at the Festival.

Michael has this and many more videos up on his Wild Atlantic Way North Kerry Facebook page. See it below (the fireworks are towards the end)

Six Things To Do At The Festival On Sunday

TraleeToday.ie’s coverage of the Rose of Tralee International Festival is brought to you by AIB Tralee…

.

The weekend is nearly over but there’s no sign of the fun ending. Here’s a few suggestions on what to do today (and hopefully the weather won’t be as bad as the forecast!)…

1. Cheer on the Rose 10k runners…

The Rose of Tralee 10k takes place from the Tralee Wetlands at 11.30am but if you want to cheer them home, get to the finish line this afternoon at the Ashe Memorial Hall on Denny Street.

Hundreds of runners have signed up and some are doing it for great causes.

Continued below…

.

2. Family fun all over town…

Again, the town centre and Town Park will be awash with street performers, children’s entertainers, musicians and more for the day. Don’t miss the fun.

3. ‘It’s A Knockout’…

Charities, clubs, businesses and groups of friends will raise their profile in front of thousands of people in a fun new event today.

Teams of six will tackle a course of inflatable and foam obstacles in the hope of winning a top prize of €1000 in the Town Park. It should be some craic. It starts at 3.30pm and goes on til about 5pm.

.

4. Fashion lovers rejoice…

This year’s  Rose of Tralee Fashion Show at the Dome will feature all the top boutiques and stores from the Munster region, including top Irish milliners presented by The Holman Lee Agency.

One lucky woman in the audience will win a magnificent prize worth €1,000 for being the Best Dressed Lady. Tickets are €35 and are still available. The show starts at 8pm.

5. Music of the night…

Again, there’s a range of different styles of music to enjoy. Heart & Soul are in Castle Street, the Shannon Gospel Choir are on the Denny Street Stage at 8.30pm followed by the Connor McKeon Band.

6. Take shelter in the pub…

If it’s raining the pubs have some fantastic entertainment lined up. In the Brogue there’s a trad session followed by the amazing Midnite Cafe, over in No.4 On The Square you can rock to the excellent Chapter 2. There’s no reason to stay at home!

IT stayed dry and that’s what matters!

Memories of the monsoon conditions during last year’s parade were banished on a dry and mild night in Tralee, as the Roses floats winded their way down through town last night.

Daithi O Sé and Rose of Tralee 2016 Maggie McEldowney led the parade with the RTE star working the crowd before the current Roses arrived on their elaborate floats.

There was music from a number of bands, colourful dancers and some performers from Fossetts Circus to entertain the crowds.

Continued below…

.

There was a wonderful atmosphere throughout it was finished off with a massive dance in front of the Denny Street stage with Roses, Escorts and Rosebuds rocking as Brian Hurley got the crowd warmed up for the spectacular fireworks display.

It started on time, it was dry, the floats were great and everyone had a good time. Result. Scroll down for photos and a video of the dancing…

Eight Things To See At The Festival On Saturday

TraleeToday.ie’s coverage of the Rose of Tralee International Festival is brought to you by AIB Tralee…

.

Saturday of the festival always draws the biggest crowds to town thanks to the parade, but there’s loads to see and do before and after it…

1. One for foodies…

Taste Kerry will host “Taste The Kingdom”, in conjunction with Rose of Tralee International Festival at The Pavilion in the Festival Dome.

This years event will showcase the very best of Kerry produce with over 20 artizan producers present along with cookery demonstrations and the “Kerry Cook Off” as top Kerry Chefs battle it out with assistance from their Celebrity “Commis”.

Taking part will be Radio Kerry’s Deirdre Walsh, Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney, Minister Brendan Griffin and a mystery GAA star.

Added to the event this year is a “Food Trail” within the venue. Should be a yummy afternoon. It starts from 11am with the Celebrity Cook off between 1pm and 3pm.

Continued below…

.

2. Get active at charity Zumbathon…

Next door to the Taste Kerry event, the Inspired charity in Tralee that caters for young adults with intellectual disabilities are holding a Zumbathon from 12noon to 2pm.

The event will be led by Linda Flanagan, Zumba instructor. Tickets are available at the door. Children €5, adults €8 and a family ticket for €20.

3. Meet the gardaí…

An Garda Síochána, Tralee are hoping for a great turnout from the public at their open day. The John Mitchel’s GAA Complex at Ballyseedy will be the venue for the event which will run from 12pm to 4pm and is open to all.

Continued below…

.

4. Meet the Roses in your local…

Many pubs and hotels will welcome their Roses from around 12.30 to 2pm around the town.

For example The Brogue sees Galway, Dublin, South Carolina and Sydney arrive, while No.4 The Square has Tyrone, Louth, Ohio and Newfoundland. No doubt they’ll be trying out their pint-pulling techniques.

5. Cycle Against Suicide Spinoff…

The community of Tralee will host a 50km cycle as part of the Cycle Against Suicide SpinOff series from 2.30pm at the Austin Stacks GAA club at Connolly Park.

The route will once again visit the picturesque coastal village of Ballyheigue where there’ll be lunch and refreshments at the Community Centre from 3.45pm, a Mental Health presentation, Reilki, EFT and Tai Chi workshops along with guest speakers.

At 5:15pm the cyclists will start their return journey to Tralee, via Ardfert where a group photo will be taken at Ardfert Cathedral. The cyclists will then continue on to Tralee, to lead the 2017 Rose of Tralee parade through Tralee town. You can register on the day from 12noon at the Stacks Club.

6. Family entertainment…

It goes without saying that there’s family fun, music and fantastic entertainment all over Tralee again during the day in the Town Park, The Square and along the streets. The market is in the Mall with the aroma of world cuisine filling the streets.

7. The Parade…

Just pray the rain stays away and, at the moment, it looks like we might be okay.  It’s always a colourful highlight for all the family and culminates in a spectacular fireworks display.

It’s due to start at 8.30pm but get down early if the little ones want a good view.

8. Say “I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do” to Abbaesque…

There’s loads of music on the streets after the parade, but the highlight has to be Abbaesque in The Square from 10pm.

These guys are the top tribute act to the Swedish pop legends and no matter what music your into, you’ll be screaming ‘Money Money Money’ at the top of your voice by midnight (after which you’ll be demanding a man)!

A NUMBER of Rose of Tralee contestants paid a visit to the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry on Friday morning.

They met staff and patients to hear about the amazing work that goes at the facility and the new 15 bed unit which will open next month.

Arizona Rose Lauren Koll had an interesting chat with patient 91 year old Marie O’Carroll from Connolly Park, who spent many years in the US, including some time in Arizona where her late husband, William, was stationed as a meteorologist with the US Air Force.

The Roses posed for photos and spent time with patients and learned more about the facility before heading off to another engagement. Scroll down for photos…

Four Things To See At The Festival On Friday

TraleeToday.ie’s coverage of the Rose of Tralee International Festival is brought to you by AIB Tralee…

.

It’s really today that the family fun begins in earnest and the town centre comes alive. There’s loads to do from dawn to well past dusk so here’s a few suggestions…

1. Check out the market…

The new-look Mall will be transformed into a market with both sides of the street lined with stalls selling all kinds of stuff. If you have children, try getting through without forking out for a inflatable Dora or another infernal fidget spinner!

Best of all though is the variety of food stalls from Asian street food to footlong hotdogs. That’s lunch sorted!

Continued below…

.

2. History of Rose Festival and  its fashion…

There’s two exhibitions opening this morning. The Rose of Tralee historic exhibition in Tralee Library and 60 years of fashion exhibition at The Ashe Memorial Hall. Both are worth a look for a glimpse into the past.

3. Family Town

Crowds enjoying entertainment in Town Park.

This is where the festival comes into its own for families. The Town Park will be buzzing — literally with The Wasps fun act — with all kinds of entertainment including Leafy Louis, Park Ranger, Daisy & Bluebell, a petting zoo and farm and more.

It’s not confined to the Town Park. The Square has a kiddies disco from 3-4pm with the characters from Frozen, busking in Denny Street and the Three Amigos in Central Plaza. It all kicks off from 12noon.

Continued below…

.

4. Music takes over…

Queen tribute band, Flash Harry will perform for free on the streets of Tralee tonight.

If you haven’t got a ticket for the Rose Ball, then the place to be tonight is around the town centre.

In The Square, Bayonets from Annascaul plays at 8.30pm followed by a fire show from Thosefireboys and then Phil N The Blanks.

On the Denny Street Stage the highlight will be Queen tribute act Flash Harry from 10.30pm, but before that there’s Turas the Show from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

Also along Denny Street there’s The Absurdist Pipe Band and The Estrellies which is a 12 piece brass band from Holland. There’ll be other acts too around the town so make sure you get down and enjoy the fun. Let’s hope the weather is kind!

With the arrival of the Roses yesterday, it was the signal for the Rose Escorts to begin their duties for the week.

To help them along, a make-up tutorial was arranged for the lads on Wednesday morning at CH Chemists.

We caught up with the Kerry Escorts who were really enjoying the week and looking forward to attending to the Roses’ every need.

They haven’t been paired with Roses yet, but it happens they’ll be prepared!

“We got a chance to meet the Roses last night at the Greyhound Track. It should be a great week ahead,” said Thomas Lynch from Castleisland.

“The excitement is really building up now,” said Shane Thornton from Listowel. “The racetrack last night was unbelievable, meeting the girls and breaking the ice, so to speak. We’re getting into the swing of things now.”

“There’s a great buzz now. It’s going well so far and it was great to finally get to meet everyone last night,” said Jackie Healy Rae, son of TD Michael.

Tralee man, Joseph Meehan, was also having a ball.

“The place is buzzing now that it’s started. It’s funny to be on this side as I would have been a spectator down the years. I’m seeing the town from a different side now,” said Joseph.

“It’s a great experience so far,” said Sean O’Connor from Waterville. “It’s great to see it all taking shape now and meeting the Roses was great. We’re all just looking forward to the week ahead.”

SO now their week really begins.

The 64 Roses received a rousing welcome on Tuesday afternoon when they disembarked from the coaches to a jazz band playing and banners waving to arrive at The Rose Hotel.

The ladies in red were greeted by Dick and Eibhlín Henggeler of the hotel and many family members were also present as well as young autograph hunters and selfie-seekers.

.

For three Roses it was a sort of homecoming as London Rose Caoimhe Gallagher is a Killorglin woman, Aisling Walsh, the Sydney Rose comes from Ballylongford and Rathmore lady Breda O’Mahony is representing her home county.

Breda told us what the last couple of days have been like.

“The last two days feels like a week so much has happened. We went to all the major tourist sites and we had a ball. It’s been unreal. Being a Kerry Rose landing here this afternoon is something special. It’s every young girl’s dream to be a Kerry Rose so it’s very overwhelming,” said an emotional Breda.

Sydney Rose Aisling was also delighted to be home.

“It’s been surreal. I can’t describe what it’s like coming home to Kerry to represent a massive city and its Irish Australian community,” she said.

The Roses have a packed schedule over the next few days and will be visiting various parts of Kerry between now and Friday. Scroll down for photos and a video of the Roses arriving…
