Kerry’s Young People Urged To Register To Vote As Deadline Approaches

THE National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is encouraging the 1,997 young people in Kerry who have turned 18 in the past 12 months, to make sure they are registered to vote, given that a General Election is just weeks away.

If the election is held at the end of February, as widely expected, the deadline for inclusion on the supplementary register could be as early as February 8.

Students from ITT were queuing at the Garda Station in Tralee this morning to get their registration form stamped as this tweet from ITT Students Union shows.

James Doorley, NYCI deputy director explained: “We are especially anxious to ensure that the 1,997 young people who have turned 18 in the last 12 months in Kerry are included in the electoral register and can exercise their democratic right.”

Any young person who is 18 years of age on or before the date of the election is eligible to vote. If they are not currently registered, they can do so by downloading and filling in the RFA2 form at www.checktheregister.ie.

This form must be stamped at a Garda Station and returned to the local authority before close of business on the registration deadline.

Likewise, if a young person wishes to change their registration address, they need to complete an RFA3 form, get it stamped and return it to the local authority by the deadline which will be known once the election date is announced.

“For almost every election we get calls from young people who have missed the registration deadline and are disappointed that they cannot vote, we urge young people to make sure they are registered and not to leave it to the last minute, so that they can vote in the upcoming General Election,” concluded Mr Doorley.

Paul White in action for Forest Green.

AS the final deals of the English transfer window were being done, ex Tralee Dynamos goalkeeper Paul White, made the announcement that it was time for him to depart Forest Green Rovers.

The decision was made due to the lack of action White has seen between the posts in his two-and-half-years at the Gloucestershire club.

In that time, the 20-year-old former Ireland U18 international made only one competitive appearance for Forest Green who play in the fifth tier of English football.

Despite this, Paul White, has shown respect to the club and a lot of integrity by writing a heartfelt letter to Forest Green to show his gratitude for his time there.

“Leaving is really hard to digest at the moment,” writes Paul from Castleisland and was previously on the books at Cork City.

“I’ve really settled in and enjoyed my time at Forest Green, but I think this is the best outcome for all parties.”

“For me as a footballer I’m happiest when I’m playing and unfortunately that hasn’t happened at FGR, so the time is right for a fresh start and give myself the best opportunity to achieve what I want from the game.”

“There’s a few options on the table so I’ll have to weigh everything up and decide what’s best for me. It’s important for me to get as much game-time as I can in the next few months and then hopefully something will come about in the summer.”

“There’s so many people I’d like to thank. Everyone I met over my time here have become family to me and it starts at the top with chairman Dale, who I cannot thank enough for giving me the opportunity and the platform to become a professional footballer.”

“I’ll never lose the Irish accent, but I’ve embraced the culture of Stroud and will keep it with me for a long time.

I am grateful for everything the club and the people have done for me in my time at FGR, but as one door closes another door will open and I know I will go onto to have the career that I want.”

GAELSCOIL Mhic Easmainn pupils are getting business savvy as part of  The Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP).

Fifth class pupils have been busily putting together a second hand clothing sale called ‘Cloze Mania’ with a emphasis on branded items.

Pupils are looking for people to pledge their unwanted gear to the school between February 8 – 17. Money raised from the sale will go to the class and 10% to cancer research charity.

JEP is a 10 – 16 week entrepreneurial education programme for primary school pupils.

The not-for-profit programme is led by Jerry Kennelly in association with academic partner, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. The programme helps participating pupils to develop a number of skills both as young  entrepreneurs and students.

Last year, 10,000 pupils participated in the programme, 1000 of which were from Kerry across 41 primary schools. They played their part in creating their very own classroom enterprises.

OVER the last three weeks, the 2nd class pupils from Moyderwell Mercy Primary have been participating in their version of Operation Transformation.

The pupils participate in at least ten minutes of additional exercise per day, adding it to their regular P.E. classes of football and swimming. The extra activities include walking, running, skipping and dancing.

A lot of research has been done by the pupils and they had the pleasure of visiting Garvey’s SuperValu on Monday to analyse the sugar and fat content of 50 various foods that would be in a normal weekly shopping trolley.

In the results, the pupils found extremely high levels of sugar in Coca Cola, Fanta, Nutella, Cereal Bars, jams and biscuits. Sweets and chocolates were also found to have high levels of sugar.

The pupils also discovered a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables which are very healthy for our bodies.

Tim Moynihan, Assistant Manager at Garvey’s SuperValu, welcomed and praised the children for their hard work. Each child received two pieces of fruit for their super efforts.

If you would like to find out more, further results of this food survey will be available at the school’s open night this Thursday, February 4, at 7pm or on the schools website and Facebook.

Orlagh Winters: Mental Health Should Be A Major Election Issue

Ashe Hotel Insert
.

Orlagh New 1I’VE debated with myself for a while on whether or not to write about this subject as thankfully it is not something that has ever knocked on my door but it has affected many friends.

The subject is suicide and there is not a day that I don’t hear of another family scourged by the plague.

Hundreds of people each year will die by suicide, the figure is rising every year. I cannot comprehend why this is not declared some sort of a state of emergency by the government.

There seems to be little or nothing being done to prevent another family standing at a graveside with so many questions unanswered. Why is this? Are our politicians too afraid to tackle the subject?

Recently we saw singer Bressie give a heartfelt and powerful speech in the House of the Oireachtas. The man spoke from his own experience about his difficulties with mental health and he delivered a piece that went viral.

I questioned the fact that there were so few elected representatives there listening to him. Where were they? This is a bloody important subject.

Every week we are asked on social media to share a post about a missing person from some part of the country. It breaks my heart when I see this and I imagine what the mother and father, brother or sister of the missing is going through.

The organized searches, the pleas to check buildings, the emotional posts from those who love and miss them. When is this going to be recognized as the epidemic that it is?

Continued below…

.

Only last week there was the heartbreaking story of a young man from Dublin who was refused treatment at Beaumont Hospital as it was outside his jurisdiction, he later took his own life.

What the hell is going on? When are we going to wake up and put a value on human life?

Charities such as Pieta House and The Samaritans do stellar work but they have very limited resources and are overwhelmed with the amount of people looking for help.

As election time is upon us, I urge you to question the canvassers calling to your door about their policies for mental health and what their proposals are to combat the growing suicide figures?

Look out for those you care about and most importantly be kind to everyone, you never know what someone is going through and a harsh or mean word could be the one that wounds them deeply.

If you are going through a difficult time, visit your GP and get recommendations for a good counsellor. Tell someone close to you how you are feeling. Don’t suffer in silence.

Until next week,

Be kind to each other!

Orlagh xx

OVER 500 people recently attended a coffee morning at the Ballygarry House Hotel to mark the retirement of Chief Superintendent Pat Sullivan after 41 years service in An Garda Síochána.

The event on Friday, January 22, doubled as a fundraiser for the Kerry Hospice Foundation, which is a charity very close to the hearts of Pat and his wife Maura.

Attendees on the day gave generously to this cause with a very impressive €7,930 collected on the day.

Maura who is very involved in the Kerry Hospice for over six years now, is the present day treasurer for the Tralee and Kerry Branch, was very much to the fore in organising the fundraising morning.

She expressed her thanks to those who showed their support and who generously made donations at the event.

Dan Galvin from Kerry Hospice accepted the cheque from recently retired Pat Sullivan and informed those present that all proceeds collected were to go towards the completion of the in-patient unit.

The Kerry Hospice provides care to terminally ill cancer patients throughout the county of Kerry. Last year the Kerry Hospice celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The newest venture they have embarked on is the construction of an 15 bed inpatient unit on the grounds of Kerry General Hospital.

This is a very exciting time for Kerry Hospice with the first sod turned on this project on the 11th December 2015. It is expected this project will take 12 months to complete with the estimated cost of the project amounting to €6.2 million euro.

St Brendan’s Basketball Club News

St. Brendan’s Tralee claimed the inaugural Hula Hoops Men’s Intermediate Club Championship title with an emphatic 78-60 win over BC Leixlip Nemumas at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght last Saturday.

Brendan’s run to the final saw them account for Shannon Jets, Portlaoise Panthers, Phoenix BC from Belfast and Cork Celts but it was believed that their final opponents would provide the stiffest test of all.

So it proved to be as the Kildare side got off to an impressive start and dominated exchanges early in the first quarter. Kestutis Damulevicius and Romas Eidukas were finding their range from outside and Andrius Urnikis landed two in a row as Leixlip raced into a 17-7 lead.

St Brendans celeb
St. Brendan’s Club Chairman Pa Carey and Jason Quirke proudly display the National Cup.

Brendan’s were finding scores much more difficult to come by but when Kieran Donaghy began to assert control under the boards and the introduction of Mike O’Donnell’s gave some more momentum in offence, the Tralee side powered to a 20-19 lead with Donaghy hitting eight points and securing eight rebounds.

Brendan’s continued to press early in the second and a fine Jason Quirke three pointer at the very start was added to by scores from Paul McMahon, Rob Mulcahy and a three pointer from Fergal O’Sullivan that kept the Tralee side eight points in front at half time.

Kieran Donaghy continued to torment the Leixlip defence as he dictated the Brendan’s plays with the support of captain Darren O’Sullivan the impressive Quirke. The half time score was St. Brendan’s 40 Leixlip Nemunas 32.

Early in the third Leixlip began to find space at the perimeter particularly through Marius Kasperavicius but a lack of shooting accuracy denied his side the opportunity to bridge the Brendan’s lead. In contrast, Fergal O’Sullivan landed a stunning baseline three pointer and when he was fouled with his next attempt he punished Leixlip by landing all three free throws for a 46-33 lead.

Donaghy along with Darren and Fergal O’Sullivan kept the scoreboard ticking over for Brendan’s but Leixlip were also finding their range and at the end of the third they trailed by nine, 58-49.

The final quarter provided excitement and drama in equal measure for the huge St. Brendan’s support that travelled to Tallaght. Leixlip continued to chip away at the Brendan’s lead and at one stage had the score back to just six between the sides.

However, in what proved to be a cup winning series of plays, Darren O’Sullivan who had excelled throughout, capped a memorable individual performance with back-to-back-to-back three pointers.

The last of these sent the St. Brendan’s supporters into raptures as both they and the players realised that the mission of winning a national title for the club had been achieved. Nathan Roche finished off the scoring with a lay-up to leave the final scoreline for the record, St. Brendan’s 78 BC Leixlip Nemunas 60.

The Intermediate National Cup was presented to team captain Darren O’Sullivan and the MVP not surprisingly went to Kieran Donaghy for a masterclass display on the biggest stage in Irish basketball.

St Brendan's celeb
The St. Brendan’s team celebrate their victory in the final of the Hula Hoops Basketball Ireland Intermediate National Cup after defeating BC Leixlip Nemunas 78-60

The former national player of the year and Superleague cup winner with Tralee Tigers treated those present to a sensational display throughout the game franked by his incredible stats of 18 points, 26 rebounds and 12 assists.

There were fantastic scenes afterwards as family, friends and supporters swamped the St. Brendan’s players to celebrate and the huge significance of the win for the club was clear to see for all. What it proved to the many people that witnessed the game was that St. Brendan’s looked very much at home on the national stage.

For now however it is great to simply say that St. Brendan’s are the National Intermediate Basketball Cup Champions for 2016. Congratulations to all the squad and to coach Gareth Moore and assistant coach club and club Chairman Pa Carey and sponsors The Castle Bar, Paddy Power and K9 Cabs on what was an unforgettable day for the club.

Boys U14 Div 3 Plate Semi Final

St. Brendan’s 30 – Tralee Tigers 33

This plate semi-final derby always looked like it would be a close contest and so it proved to be. Tigers were the first out of the traps with a basket catching the Brendan’s defence off guard.

But Brendans soon replied with two baskets from Graham Sheehy. Tigers penetrated the Brendan’s defence which was yet to settle and scored twice more. Sean Dillane drove deep into the paint drawing the foul and confidently sinking both free throws.

The first quarter ended with the teams tied 6 apiece. In the second quarter Garry Lynch played a simple one-two to get an easy lay-up inside and the foul that he duly punished and Sam McCarthy was rewarded for his dogged rebounding with a basket.

Tigers number 9 was clearly their go-to-man and the Brendan’s Liam Kingston worked hard to keep him quiet securing a couple of steals which were converted to scores. However young Falvey still managed to score all Tigers 7 points in the quarter.

All credit to Sam McCarthy and Matthew Hussey for containing the Tigers big-man under the boards. Garry Lynch scored another two baskets while Daniel Bowler scored to make the score 18 – 13 at half-time. Brendans continued their solid streak into the third quarter with Garry Lynch and Graham Sheehy combining to score 10 points with 8 in reply from Falvey and Dillon.

In the final quarter Tigers mainly through Falvey really hit form. They brought the margin back to 5 points, then to 3, then to 1, then took the lead by one. Brendan’s shots just didn’t fall for them until Graham Sheehy nudged Brendan’s back into a one point lead. Tigers drove and scored again and then Falvey added another to open up a 3 point lead. With 10 seconds to go Brendans called a time-out and worked a play for the essential 3 points.

Despite valiant efforts by the team with the shot rebound and shot, it wasn’t to be and it was Tigers who emerged triumphant when the buzzer sounded on a final scoreline of 33-30. Well done to the boys who gave it their all.  Thanks again to all the parents who came and supported.

Austin Stacks GAA Club Juvenile News:

Austin StacksPEIL AN DOMHNAIGH:

The Rock Under 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 training sessions in Mounthawk Gym are getting better and better. Don’t be missing out, if you haven’t started your ’16 season!

Next Sunday again, boys…our 1st spring outing! Fáilte roimh chách. Timetable: (i) Under 6 players (born in 2010/11) at 10am; (ii) Under 8 players (born 2008/09) at 11am; (iii) Under 10 players (born in 2006/07) at 12.00.

PEIL FAOI 12: Our Under 12 boys will return to action this Sunday at 1.30pm (to 2.45pm) in the brand new Nuns’ Field. An experienced coaching squad has been assembled, viz, Denis Sayers, Kieran Browne, Joe Smith, Anthony Moriarty, Éamonn Scanlon and Edward O’Connor. A fruitful season ahead!

PEIL FAOI 14: Unfortunately, due to the recent bad weather, Nemo Rangers informed us that their tournament would have to be deferred to later in the year. We continued with our sessions in the agreed gym instead.

We hope that we will be able to go outdoors this weekend. All training from now on will have us better prepared for the Under 14 Féile na nGael which will be held in the south-west on 24th, 25th and 26th June.

P.S. The U14 Féile na nGael was mentioned (its official title?) in a question in the Scór na nÓg All-Ireland last weekend and many teams didn’t answer correctly!

See gaascoroifigiuil for all 80 questions. Test yourself! The Kerry and All-Ireland winners knew 78 answers out of 80! Cavan were 2nd with 77; Cork managed 76!

PEIL FAOI 16:

‘Well done’ to all our Under 16 boys who made the trip to Dublin for the Kerry v Dublin National League game on Saturday last. And they enjoyed the challenge match against the Cuala Kickhams Club.

Thanks to Seán McMahon (who only a short few years ago kicked football in The Rock Club field) for organizing the Cuala end of things and providing some superb oriental sustenance for the latter part of our trip.

A tremendous experience…a nice trip, two games, bia blasta and good company! Sympathies to the Kerry team ach beidh lá eile acu…maybe in September! Thanks to our hardworking mentors.

SLÁN LE NIOCLÁS:

Although Nick Gogarty had only been with us for two years, we were very disappointed last week on hearing that he would be leaving us for Naas this week.

The Lurgan (Ard Mhacha) native has been part of our juvenile coaching set-up for the past two years, during which time he brought a tremendous level of enthusiasm and no little football knowledge to Connolly Park. Nick, we wish you all the best! Go n-éirí go geal leat i gCill Dara.

FREWEN CUP (Munster Schools U16½ “A” Football):

The Green CBS footballers faced Meánscoil de la Salle, Macroom, in the quarter final of the Frewen Cup Competition on Monday, Lá ‘le Bríde. (The game had been postponed from last week.)

Ár mbuachaillí ar an bpainéal: Seosamh Ó Lúbaigh, Gearóid Mac Gearailt, Anraí Ó Ceallacháin, Seán Cuiltéir, Dáithí Couchman. Other teams in contention: St. Flannan’s (Ennis), Coláiste Chríost Rí (Corcaigh); St. Brendan’s (Killarney) and the Intermediate School (Killorglin) play this week. An Fhaiche Abú!

Killarney and Ballyheigue venues were were the main focus of Badminton attention on Sunday last with Munster Championship fare being the attraction in Killarney and the progressive Ballyheigue club hosted their annual tournaments which catered for divisions 3,4 & 5.

The Munster championships in Killarney proved to be a mixed bag for the Kerry players.

The senior 1 competition saw Dingles Ciara O’Connor retain her ladies doubles title in fine style with Waterford partner Gemma Tobin. Their final opponents were the Clare/Limerick combination of Ciara Dwyer and Caroline Brown but the defending champions were always in control winning in 2 sets by 21-15; 21-12.

Miss O’Connor also had another title to defend and that was the mixed doubles crown and along with her Waterford partner they did battle their way to the decider where their opponents were the Clare/Cork pairing of Moya Ryan and Conor Hayes.

It was so close but it proved not to be. O’Connor/Walsh lost the opening set 21-11 but showing great resolve and fire in set number 2 they levelled the tie winning by 21-17..

The third and final set was a great contest. The defending champions led 11-9 at the change of sides but Ryan/Walsh battled back and took a commanding lead. The champions did fight all the way but it was the Clare/Cork pairing that came good when it mattered most and they won the tie and title by 21-17.

It was not a great senior championships for the defending champion of 2 titles Castleisland Club man, Tom Bourke. He relinquished his singles title at the semi final stage to the eventual winner, Waterford’s Eoin Walsh and in the mens double with his club partner Eric Nelligan they just had one of those off days where nothing went right for them but both of these players continue to give their best for Kerry Badminton.

From a Kerry viewpoint the match of the day was the ladies junior singles final which saw 2 Kerry players in opposition. These were Sinead Galvin and Moyvane’s Elaine Hudson, a finalist at this level also last year.

It was the Killarney lady who took the close first set by 21-17 but what a dynamic set the second one proved to be. The sides were level seven times between 11 each to 20 each where the tie break was played. They were level again at 21 each and 22 each but it was Mrs Galvin who garnished those 2 vital points to win the set and the Munster title by 24-22.

The Junior mixed doubles final saw defending champion Listowel’s Fergal Hannon battle his way to the final partnered this year by Castleisland’s Marion Rohan but they lost out in 2 close sets by 21-17; 22-20 to a Limerick pairing.

In the mens junior doubles decider Kerry were represented by Moyvane’s James Flaherty who was partnered by Corks Brendan Nyham but they fell to former Killarney member Fred Klok and Kristian O’Connor ,both playing out of Cork, in 2 sets.

So, overall Munster Championships 2016 was not such a bad one for the Kerry players.

BALLYHEIGUE TOURNAMENTS
All roads led to beautiful Ballyheigue on Sunday last where the local Badminton Club hosted their annual tournaments for all Kerry players in divisions 3,4 & 5 players.

With a total of 75 players competing from all quarters of the County it was a great day for the local club and the action proved to be fast and furious with the fare displayed throughout being of high quality.
Results as follows;

Division 5 mixed final; Aine Knightly [Annascaul] and James Beasley [Kingdom Castleisland] defeated Marie Kennelly [Moyvane] and James O Mahony [Causeway] 21-19; 21-16.

Division 5 Plate final; Jennifer Murphy [Listowel] and Padraig Hanrahan [Moyvane] defeated Lilian Holmes [Ballyheigue] and Joe Carroll [Causeway] 21-15; 21-19.

Division 4 Mixed final; Linda Burke [Ballyheigue] and Paul Hayes [Listowel] defeated Claire Cahill [Kingdom Castleisland] and Patsy O Connor [Ballyheigue] 21-12; 21-17.

Division 4 Plate final; Marie Flynn [Kingdom Castleisland] and Brendan Mc Govern [Annascaul] defeated Linda Flynn [Listowel] and Kevin O Mahony [Ballyheigue] 21-15; 21-17.

Division 3 mixed final; Carmel Hudson [Moyvane] and Mariusz Tusinski [County Club Tralee] defeated Jeanelle Griffin [Moyvane] and Tim Griffin [Ballyheigue] 21-15; 21-14.

CPC.IE County Championships

The second phase of the CPC.IE sponsored singles Badminton Kerry County Championships will take place at the Killarney Sports Centre on this coming Friday night where the titles for divisions 2 and 4 disciplines for both ladies and men are up for grabs.

At the time of writing it is almost certain that the competition in both division 4 grades will be hotly contested with a large entry and division 2 should be equally compelling.

All competitors, coordinators and court helpers are requested to be on call for 7.30 so that the action can commence on time.

Butterfield Cup;

The Butterfield Cup, which is Munster’s second oldest team event which commenced in 1947, after the Haynes Cup, will take place in Cappoquin Co. Waterford on this coming Sunday and Kerry travel to the Decies County as defending champions following their great win in Killarney last year.

However, after many retirements, especially in the ladies sector, this could be described as a new look Kerry side but under player/manager, Eric Nelligan, the panel have put in a lot of training in recent times.

The Kerry squad is as follows; , Ciara O’Connor, Edel Broderick,Marion Rohan, Jennifer Murphy, Sinead Galvin, Niamh Flaherty, Eric Nelligan, Tom Bourke, Gio Gaudino, Fergal Hannon and James Flaherty.

It is known that 5 Counties will take part it this years event, Clare being the exception, and this would be the largest County entry for some years.

Best wishes are extended to the Kerry panel.

All Kerry players who compete in the County Masters (over 40) competition are requested to note that the date has been changed to Friday night March 18th and to be played in the Presentation Gym Killarney to commence at 8 pm.

IT’S become a bit of a forgotten art form of electioneering, but the Healy Raes do have a thing for preserving old ways and traditions.

With the general election around the corner, Micheal Healy Rae features in a new video to soundtrack his campaign with a reworking of farm machinery cult-classic ‘Hit the Diff’.

The song called ‘Make the Diff’ is performed by Killarney band ‘Truly Diverse’ and sings the praises of the South Kerry independent’s famous black cap and political style.

Healy Rae will be knocking on doors in Tralee this time around, but we’re not convinced that the people of the town are his target market with this one.

He may have to rework some other hits for the county’s capital like, ‘Rock Down To Casements Avenue’ or ‘Oh Caherina’.

Here’s the song…

Tralee Fenit GreenwayTHE Friends of the Tralee-Fenit Greenway are to walk the line next Sunday and are hoping to be joined by as many members of the public as possible.

“We last Walked the Line in protest nearly four years ago in April 2012,” reads a press release from the group.

“Since then, the Tralee Urban section has been completed and proving as expected to be a great asset to the town. Walk with family and friends on Sunday next February 7 to celebrate this success and also to publicly highlight the absence of any meaningful progress on the conversion of  the rural section from Tralee to Fenit.”

“Kerry County Council now have full authority from CIE to proceed with the development of this publicly owned disused rail line but again there is a lack of will to see this fantastic project through to completion,” the group says.

They argue that completion of the work will provide a safe off-road route for commuters, people will be able to cycle a greenway from a mainline train station to a Blue Flag Beach.

If you would like to join them the assemble at St. Brendan’s Church carpark on Sunday at 2.30pm for 3pm departure.

Kerins O’Rahillys 10K 1916 Commemorative Run

Kerins O’Rahillys held their second 10K run on Sunday last.

It was a commemorative run and held to honour one of the men whose names we are privileged to have associated with our club.

The run honoured “The O’Rahilly” and we were very thankful to his Great grandson John O’Rahilly who made the journey from Dublin to meet everyone and to present the commemorative medals and trophies after the race.

The overall winners were in the men’s, 1st Stephen Young, 2nd Pat Dunworth and 3rd John Barrett. In the ladies race Catriona Barry crossed the line in first place with Jessica McCarthy 2nd and Caoimhe Casey 3rd.

Coiste Trá Lí League Kerins O’Rahillys 1-05 Austin Stacks 0-12

The minor season started on Saturday last when the Coiste Trá Lí Minor League got off to a start with our first round game against Austin Stacks in what was a bitterly cold, wet and windy Healy Park.

Austin Stacks proved the better side on the day and went in 0-07 points to Kerins O’Rahillys no score at half time. We didn’t have a great start to the second half with Austin Stacks starting off with 3 unanswered points.

As the wind died down we put up a better effort and eventually outscored our opposition by 1-05 to 0-04 with Evan Doody scoring 1-03 of this but it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap and Austin Stacks were overall winners on a score of 0-12 to Kerins O’Rahillys 1-05.

The next game will be Round 2 on Saturday 6-02-2016 3.30pm Kerins O’Rahillys v Ballymac.

Round 3 Saturday 13-02-2016 4.00pm Kerins O’Rahillys v Na Gaeil.

The Minor Co League starts on Saturday February 20th. We will be in Division 1 along with Dr Crokes, Firies, Gneeveguilla, Austin Stacks and Listowel Emmets.

MINORS

BALLYMAC 4-3         NA GAEL   1-13

The minor football season began with a home game against Na Gael in the Tralee town league. Ballymac lined out minus several key players and with others playing in unfamiliar positions. Na Gael pointed early on while Keelan was on hand to flick Dara Reagans free to the net.

Dara Keane followed with a point. Our opponents then got 5 points to go 2 points up. Max O Brien and David Long were doing well in defence and ML Hoare made some fantastic runs upfield .Dara Keane again pointed from a Dara Reagan pass the latter then pointed himself. The visitors got  the last point of the half which left the half time score Na Gael 0-7 Ballymac 1-3.

Na Gael got two more points on the resumption but Ballymac were finding scores more difficult to come by. Mid way into the half Eoin O Malley worked his way  along the endline before passing to Barry Lyons who finished to the net.

Minutes later Liam O Malley took a pass from D Reagan and again goaled and we were now 3 points ahead. The visitors then hit a purple patch scoring 1-4 without reply.  Dara Keane was brought down in the square and Keelan (who played on despite injury) converted the penalty. Unfortunately there was time for no more and a highly energetic performance just failed to bring victory. We are due to play Kerins  O’Rahillys away next weekend.

‘Darkness Into Light’ Event To Be Held In Tralee This Year

Kerry ETB new insert
.

Tralee Darkness into LightTRALEE will be one of the Kerry towns to host the ‘Darkness Into Light’ event this coming May.

The event, in aid of Pieta House, has captured the hearts of people all over the country as a fundraiser and a powerful way of raising awareness of mental health issues.

It has been a huge success over the past number of years with thousands taking part.

It will take place at 4.15am on May 7 with more details to be ironed out in the coming weeks.

A Facebook page on the event, ‘Darkness Into Light Tralee’, has been set up which you can like by clicking here. A post on the page earlier read:

“We are delighted to announce OFFICIALLY that Pieta House’s Darkness Into Light is coming to Tralee on the 7th of may at 4.15 am. With the new Pieta House in Tralee, we are really looking forward to making this first year event in Tralee a real special one for everyone. More details to follow soon keep an eye on the page and share the page with friends thanks.”

The man behind the Tralee event is Colin Aherne, who co-organised the successful Walk 4 Life event last April raising awareness of mental health and suicide awareness/prevention.

That event – which will be held in September this year – raised nearly €6,000 for organisations throughout Kerry that help to promote positive mental health and the message of suicide awareness and prevention.

“I went to pieta house last year about bringing it to Tralee, but was too late,” said Colin. “When I had the ‘Walk For Life’, Pieta House was a chosen charity. Last year it was too late to have the event in Tralee, so this year I was contacted to do the event and I gladly said yes.”

“It’s means a lot to me to get this event to Tralee as it creates great awareness of the great service that Pieta House provides and since there is a new Pieta House in town, it gives the Tralee event more meaning,” he said.

Burglars Target Cash And Jewellery In Two Houses Outside Tralee

An Garda Síochána

GARDAI say burglars are hitting homes while people are out to work and are looking for cash and jewellery, rather than bigger items.

They are warning the public to be vigilant after two homes were hit in the Abbeydorney and Ballymacelligott areas in the past week.

On Monday, January 25, a house was hit in the Abbeydorney area. The owners of the house were out to work and cash and jewellery was taken.

On Friday, January 29, a house in Ballymacelligott was hit while the owners were away, but they came away empty-handed. The incidents are happening during the day. Homes in Firies were also hit recently.

Gardaí are advising people not to keep cash in the house and make sure all windows and doors are secure before leaving for work.

Gardaí are asking the public to be mindful of any suspicious activities in their area and to report anything out of the ordinary, to Tralee Garda Station on 066-7102300.

garda_1GARDAI are warning the public about another phone scam.

A woman contacted Tralee Garda Station, saying they were called by a man this morning, with a middle eastern accent, claiming to be from an Irish bank headquarters. The call was made to a landline.

The caller had the person’s name and address, which gardaí say they must have found in the phone book.

He said he wanted to send the person out a new credit card because their old one was being replaced.

The person was suspicious so hung up on him. It is not the policy of banks to call customers to request personal information regarding the sending out of new credit cards.

The number that showed up on her phone was 01 800 900 800.

If anyone gets these type of calls, contact Tralee Garda Station on 066-7102300.

OVER 340 runners and walkers took off from the Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club on Sunday for their second annual 10k fundraising event.

There was a bit of a breeze and ‘misty’ rain but otherwise conditions were fine for the run, which also celebrated the 1916 hero The O’Rahilly, from whom the club gets part of its name.

Well known local athlete, John Griffin, was the official starter as the runners made their way off on the route around the Kerries and beyond, at 10am.

A descendant of the O’Rahilly, great grandson John O’Rahilly, was also there and presented medals after the event in the clubhouse, where participants enjoyed some well earned refreshments.

The first home in the men’s race was Stephen Young, followed by Pat Dunworth and John Barrett.

In the ladies race, Catriona Barry came first followed by Jessica McCarthy and Caoimhe Casey.

There were also sports team events with Kerry Crusaders winning the men’s event and the Austin Stacks ladies winning on enemy soil in the women’s event, receiving the John Dowling Perpetual Trophy for their efforts.

Austin Stacks GAA Club News

Austin Stacks CrestCLUB SOCIAL:

Club Secretary, Elma Nix sends the following report: Rockies gathered at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Saturday night last for our annual Club social which was excellently organised as always by Noreen Power & Mary Mc Quinn.

The event was a great success with our Senior Players – Hurlers, Ladies & Senior Men – awards presentations being the highlight of the evening.  The hurling team were especially successful winning the South Kerry League, the County Junior Championship and the Trevor Barrett Memorial Shield.  The 2 individual hurling player awards went to Sean Hartnett & Colm Ó Giollagáin.

Austin Stacks Senior Ladies football team finished runners-up in the Kilmacud Crokes Sevens tournament and won the North Kerry Intermediate Championship.  The senior footballers won the 2015 Town League and Town Championship and the County League 2014 final which was held last May.

Barry Walsh, playing his first year at Senior grade, was awarded “Club Player Of The Year Award”.  A fantastic achievement indeed for the young footballer.

Club Chairman Liam Lynch in his address said “From a juvenile perspective, we won the Féile Under 14 competition for the first time. That was phenomenal for us and shows the strength coming up. The club is about as much off the field as on the field and we’ll be opening our new Nun’s Field soon, with new floodlights installed this year.

The success of our Jobmatch initiative among other things has been spectacular and we’re very conscious that we provide a social outlet for people. 2017 is our centenary year and we’ve big plans” he concluded.

Maura Shanahan won Best Dressed Lady with William Kirby fighting off stiff competition to claim the Best Dressed Man’s prize. Thanks to all the businesses who provided beautiful spot prizes.

Those attending enjoyed a great meal, followed by music from the band ‘Celebration’ before DJ Francie Breen ‘rocked’ the crowd into the wee hours.

 FAREWELL:

While there was great joy at the Social on Saturday night there was also some sadness when friends and colleagues learned that Nicholas Gogarty will be leaving us, at least for the time being, to take up a position with his Employer (Kerry Group) in Naas.

Nicholas has been with us for the past two seasons, and in that time has played a total of 25 games, mostly with the B team but a few also with the Seniors. Added to that, Nick immersed himself in other Club activities, including Coach with the U16s.

While you will be greatly missed around the Club, Nick, everyone wish you all the best in Lilywhite territory and, who knows, you might find your way back to the Kingdom again some time soon. You will always be most welcome in the Rock Club.

MINOR FOOTBALL:

Minors Stacks 1

Austin Stacks 0-12; Kerins O’Rahillys 1-5.

Healy Park, Ballyrickard was the venue for this first round of the Town League played in cold and wintry conditions on last Saturday afternoon (30th Jan).
Great credit goes to both sides for braving such adverse conditions and for putting on such a good display.
Only four points separated the sides at the end, even though we were nine points ahead five minutes into the second half.

The home side had failed to score by that time, but in a ten minute spell they had fought their way back to within two points, when they scored 1-4 without reply (0-9 to 1-4).
At half time we led by seven points to no score after taking full advantage of the strong wind that favoured us in the first half.

The wind, of course, was not the only factor that contributed to such a good performance by our boys,. We defended superbly with four of our debutants playing superbly – Robbie Murphy, Kieran Pierse, Shane Kelliher (son of Kieran) and Cian Talbot.

Philip Quilter and David Fitzmaurice dominated midfield, while up front four more new debutants were outstanding – Odhran Liston (brother of Cian), Alan Dore, Simon Draghici and Donagh McKivergan (son of Martin). On his debut Donagh scored six of our twelve points. I

n addition the remaining nine players who lined out have shown how much they have progressed as they start their second season in the Minor grade (it’s a 3rd season for Fergal Ryan).

Team: Robbie Murphy, Keelan Pierse, Brandon Patterson (Capt), Shane Kelliher, Pádraig Looney, Ciarán O’Reilly, Cian Talbot, Philip Quilter, David Fitzmaurice, Conor Lowe (0-1), Fergal Ryan 0-3 – one free), Odhran Liston, Alan Dore (0-1), Cian Liston, Donagh McKivergan (0-6 – 5 frees).

Subs used: Simon Draghici (45m) (0-1), Jason Roche (59m).

After an absence of three years it is good to see Wayne Quillinan back managing a Stacks team again. Wayne’s first venture into Management was with our Minor team in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

He also managed the U21 team in 2007 and 2008 and then went on to manage the Senior team for four seasons (2009-2012). This year Wayne is accompanied by John O’Sullivan (this is John’s 3rd successive season with the Minors), Ciarán McCabe, Kieran O’Callaghan, Jonathan Conway and Eoin Colgan – and we wish all six and the whole squad the best of luck for the rest of the season.

In the remaining two rounds of the Town League we are away to Na Gaeil on Saturday next (6th Feb) at 3.30pm and in the 3rd and final round we have a home game against Ballymac on the following Saturday (13th Feb).

The top two teams qualify for the Final, the date for which has yet to be fixed.

MINOR FOOTBALL – CO. LEAGUE:

This season will see three new Clubs in Division 1 – together with ourselves, Kerins O’Rahillys and Dr. Crokes who have been Div. 1 participants for many years.

The three newcomers are Firies and Gneeveguilla, who will be in Div. 1 for the first time, and Listowel Emmets who are back in Div. 1 for the first time since 2001.

They replace Dingle, who have stepped down to Div 2, and Ballydonoghue and Spa who have opted for Div. 3A this season. As we write we still await the actual fixtures list from Co. Board.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Seniors are due to get their season underway on Sunday week (14th Feb) with a home game against John Mitchels in round 1 of the Town League. Throw in 12.30pm.

In the remaining three rounds we have another home game against Na Gaeil (21st Feb) and then two away games against Ballymac (28th Feb) and Kerins O’Rahillys (13th March). The top two teams qualify for the Final, on a date to be confirmed.

The week after that (Sun, 20th March) it’s our first major game of the season  – the Final of the 2015 Co. League away to Dr. Crokes which will double up as the opening round game of this season’s Co. League.

ROAD RUNNERS:

Elma Nix also informs us that the Austin Stacks team that participated in last Sunday’s Kerins O’Rahilly’s 10K road race were Catriona Barry, Michelle Hoare, Eileen Egan and Pat Dunworth and suffice to say they did us proud.

Catriona Barry was 1st in the  lady’s race with Pat Dunworth claiming 2nd place in the men’s race in a super time of 36.10.  The 3 ladies cumulative running times won the Austin Stacks team 1st place in the Ladies Club team event.

A huge thanks for flying the Austin Stacks flag with such distinction and well done to our neighbours Kerins O’Rahillys in organising a superb event.
