Ballyseede Castle Says Farewell To Much-Loved ‘Mr Higgins’

.
‘Mr Higgins’ was king of the Castle.

ALL at Ballyseede Castle Hotel are in mourning today as they announced the passing of the much loved ‘Mr Higgins’, the resident Irish Wolfhound at the hotel.

Mr Higgins died last night, surrounded by his family of 10 years, and under the expert care of Eugene McGrath from McGrath Vets in Tralee.

A touching tribute has been issued by the hotel today. It reads; “Mr Higgins arrived at Ballyseede Castle on November 11, 2011, the same day President Michael D Higgins was inaugurated into office and was so called Mr Higgins in his honour.

Since his first day at Ballyseede Castle, he claimed the title as king of Ballyseede Castle.  He quickly began building loving relationships with all those who met him, whether it be a wedding couple, guests staying at the castle or any member of our team who was willing to slip him some food.

In his spare time, Mr Higgins loved to roam Ballyseedy Woods, play with his friends and run at you, giving big hugs.

‘Mr Higgins’.

Mr Higgins was a dog that legends are made of. He will be greatly missed by many, but none more so than his family here at Ballyseede Castle. We loved him with all our hearts, and though the pain we feel without him is great, it in no way would compare to having never had him in our lives.

In keeping with the Blennerhassett Family tradition, Mr Higgins will be wrapped in the castles’ best blanket and buried tomorrow in the castle family pet cemetery, alongside his father Arthur.

The Castle gates will close at 6pm with the flags flying half-mast as we toast Mr Higgins’ 10 wonderful years at Ballyseede Castle with a Gin & Tonic.

Mr Higgins leaves behind a daughter Molly who resides in Ballyseede Castle, fellow dog companions Einstein, Bubbles and Hope, his 3 Donkey and Shetland Pony friends, first cousins, Ri and Liadán in Bellingham Castle, Oscar and Claddagh in Cabra Castle and Róisín in Markree Castle. He is predeceased by his Father Arthur; Mother Sibéal; and Uncle Oscar IV.

IT’S one of the county’s – if not the country’s – most beautiful hotels and it could be getting bigger soon.

The renowned Ballyseede Castle Hotel is seeking permission to enlarge its premises by constructing a 16 bedroom extension.

An application has been made to Kerry County Council by Ballyline Castle Limited for the development at the Castle property, which is a protected structure.

The hotel is hugely popular with locals and tourists alike and is a particularly popular wedding venue.

A decision is due on the application on July 28.

Pappy’s Bar in Ballyseede Castle Hotel.

I LOVE Ballyseede Castle Hotel.

It’s a classy slice of olde world charm™ just a few miles from the hustle of modern Tralee town and is hugely popular as a wedding venue for couples who want something extra special.

Having reviewed every other place in Tralee to eat, I drove out there on a wet Friday afternoon and found preparations advanced for a wedding they were hosting later that day (the theme appeared to be Las Vegas/Rat Pack-inspired judging by the table plan).

Entering an empty, but inviting, Pappy’s Bar  – it was 2.30pm so most people for lunch would have departed – I perused the menu and took a seat by the window looking out on the beautiful gardens.

There was a hot lunch choice of spiced lamb burger (€15.95), beef and guinness pie (€15.95), fish of the day with chips (€15.95) or sirloin steak (€22.95). The prices were a little on the dear side, but the hotel is somewhere people go to for an escape or a lunchtime treat in luxurious surroundings, rather than a perfunctory gap-filler.

Seeing I was eating dinner later that evening, I decided on the seafood chowder with shellfish, scented with coconut cream, saffron and French dill (€8.50) and a homemade sandwich with side salad (€5).

I can sense your eyebrow arching at the price of the chowder. That was for the starter portion, while the main course portion was €12.95.

The food wasn’t long arriving and I first noticed the chowder wasn’t a typical cream colour, but more of an orange hue, like seafood soup that you’d find in restaurants on Mediterranean.

It was absolutely delicious. Not too creamy or stodgy, the generous portion of shellfish was complemented by tasty, finely diced veg in a gorgeous soup.

The chicken salad sandwich comprised of fresh chicken breast, tomatoes, lettuce and dill mayonnaise and was really good.

The bill came to €13.50. I could have stayed there all day, but having resisted the urge to stay and gatecrash the wedding, I reluctantly left the charming bar and went back to work.

I’ll be back.

KERRY’S romantic charms could have US audiences gushing when it features in an episode of the hugely popular reality TV show ‘The Bachelorette’

Back in April, ‘The Bachelorette’ which is regularly watched by millions of people every week, was filmed in locations in Tralee and Killarney.

The ABC show will air Monday night in the States with Randles Hotel in Killarney taking centre stage. Sources have said however that filming in Kerry was “so successful” that it was extended from one to two episodes.

While it is understood that confidentiality clauses were put in place with a number of hotels and restaurants in the area, it is rumoured that some filming did take place at the popular Ballyseede Castle Hotel.

The show revolves around a single bachelorette, who gets to know 25 different men over the course of the series with the ultimate aim of tying down one of the lucky lads.

If it makes the cut, this sort of exposure could be a tremendous boost for the popular Tralee wedding venue as its old world charm could well capture the hearts of the American public.

TELEVISION cameras returned to Ballyseede Castle last week but it definitely wasn’t ghouls they were filming this time.

The hotel was one of the locations for filming a hit US reality TV show  set to air on ABC Television in June of this year.

‘The Bachelorette’ which is regularly watched  by up to 15 million people every week has been filming in various locations around both Tralee and Killarney in the past number of weeks.

While it is understood that confidentiality clauses were put in place with a number of hotels and restaurants in the area, it is known locally that some filming did take place at the popular wedding venue.

Just last year, a film crew from the ‘Ghostcircle’ TV show, which airs on the Showcase channel, visited Ballyseede Castle, as it is known as one of the Top Ten Haunted Hotels in the world according to Tripadvisor.

The programme aired earlier this year giving great publicity to the hotel. With millions of people set to watch The Bachelorette this summer, a whole new audience will see what the old castle has to offer.

BALLYSEEDE Castle Hotel will appear on our televisions this Friday, March 6 as the hotel is investigated for any possible ‘paranormal activity’ taking place within its walls.

We reported back in October that the hotel was named as one of the ‘Top 10 Haunted Hotels’ in the world according to TripAdvisor.

We’ll see if this reputation is justified on ‘Ghostcircle’ at 9pm on the Showcase channel, which is on Sky Channel 192 and Free Sat Channel 402.

Last year, a film crew stayed at the hotel for two nights and did the paranormal programme featuring local people and guests.

The show will feature ‘spooky’ and unexplained tales from a number of staff working there, including those about the resident ghost ‘Hilda’ that supposedly occupies the famous old building.

One of the last of Blennerhassetts (who were long-time residents of the building), Hilda, who died in the 1960s, is said to be the hotel’s most regular sighting.

Rory O’Sullivan from Ballyseede Castle will even show some amazing pictures of phenomena that have been caught on digital camera.

The current building, which dates from 1721, has been the scene of many strange occurrences. The hotel even does nightly tours of the castle for guests, with barman, Tim, explaining the spooky side to the history.

We’ll just have to wait and see if any ‘ghoulish ghosts’ will pop up to give the camera crew and staff members a good ol’ fright!

Ballyseede Castle Hotel.

BALLYSEEDE Castle Hotel has been named one of the Top 10 Haunted Hotels in the world according to Tripadvisor, just in time for Halloween.

The hotel is even to be featured on Sky television in the coming months in relation to its spooky history. But don’t worry, they’re friendly ghosts.

The current building, which dates from 1721, has been the scene of many strange occurrences according to Rory O’Sullivan of Ballyseede Castle Hotel, who spoke to Deirdre Walsh on her Talkabout programme on Radio Kerry on Friday.

“The history goes back to the Earl of Desmond’s time when his head was chopped off in the grounds of Ballyseede Castle and taken to London Bridge as a warning to those who misbehaved in the time of Henry VIII,” said Rory.

“People still come to Ballyseede to experience the paranormal and the unusual, but I can assure everyone that they are all friendly ghosts,” he said.

The hotel even does nightly tours of the castle for guests, with barman, Tim, explaining the spooky side to the history.

Six months ago, a film crew stayed at the hotel for two nights and did a paranormal programme featuring local people and guests which, said Rory, will probably be broadcast in December.

Rory has never seen a ghost, but one occasion, when the Castle was empty but for he and his wife Marnie staying in one of the hotel rooms,  something unusual happened.

They heard voices at the top of stairs, followed by the sound of people running down those stairs. When Rory ventured out, there was no-one there, the doors were locked and there was no sign of a break-in.

One of the last of Blennerhassetts (who were long-time residents of the building), Hilda, who died in the 1960s, is said to be the hotel’s most regular sighting.

Rory told the Talkabout programme that some guests have seen a woman bearing her description, with one person picking her out of a photograph and insisting she saw her in the hotel.

Chilling stuff, but like Rory said, they’re harmless ghosts.

HUNDREDS turned up in the summer sunshine at Ballyseede Castle Hotel on Wednesday, for an open-air theatre performance of a literary classic.

The Chapterhouse Theatre Company returned to the grounds to perform ‘Wuthering Heights’ and tickets were sold out before Wednesday, showing the popularity of the event.

Adapted from Emily Brontë’s novel by Laura Turner, the company presented the classic love story set on the beautiful, mysterious wilderness of the Yorkshire moors.

The story of enduring love and passion thrilled and entranced the audience – many of whom enjoyed a picnic on the tables provided in the stunning setting of the Castle – and the weather held to make it a great evening for all.

This isn’t the first time Chapterhouse has come to the Castle and last year’s performance of Jane Austen’s Sense And Sensibility was a also a great success. They’re will be many more to come I’m sure.
