363 Patients Waited On Trolleys At UHK During November

.

THERE were 363 patients waiting on trolleys in University Hospital Kerry during the month of November.

This was a rise of eight on the same month in 2022, but lower than the worst November in 2019 when there were 399 waiting on trolleys.

Nationally, over 11,493 patients, including 434 children, went without a bed in Irish hospitals in November according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s TrolleyWatch.

Continued below…

.

Commenting on the level of overcrowding this November, INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha said:

“The sheer volume of patients who were admitted to hospitals without a bed this November are far too high. The call has to be made now ahead of what is going to be a dangerous situation to curtail non-urgent elective activity and ensure that our private hospitals are available to assist. There is absolutely no point in waiting until we are mid-crisis to act.

“The current moratorium on recruitment which is predicted to get worse in the early part of next year will require further curtailment of services and the HSE must ensure that that is planned in order to avoid this continuous discommoding of patients on the day of procedures.”

AIB Munster Intermediate Club Football Championship: Semi-Final Result
Milltown/Castlemaine 0-10
Cill na Martra 0-13

Venue: Cill na Martra GAA Grounds, Cork.

Referee: Derek O’Mahoney (Tipperary)

Hard luck to our Milltown/Castlemaine Senior Football team and management who fell to a three point defeat in Cork on Sunday afternoon in the AIB Munster Intermediate Club Football Championship Semi-Final against Cill na Martra. Our lads trailed 0-6 to 0-4 at half time and whilst we did put over the first three scores of the second half to take the lead, the hosts kept getting their noses in front at crucial stages.

The teams were level at 0-9 to 0-9 approaching the final quarter and it was 0-11 to 0-10 after 55 minutes but two late scores from the Cork side saw them advance to a Munster Final meeting with Mungret of Limerick.

We are so very proud of all our lads achievements over the course of the campaign. It just wasn’t to be last weekend. The season is still not over as the Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship Semi-Final will take place this weekend against Keel.

Kerry Schools Encouraged To Apply For Solar Panel Grants

.
Education Minister Norma Foley and Minister of State Ossian Smyth at the launch of the Solar for Schools programme in St Paul’s CBS in Dublin.

MINISTER for Education Norma Foley has urged schools in Kerry to apply for solar panel grants to reduce their energy costs and their emissions.

The Solar For Schools scheme will provide eligible schools with 6 kilowatts of roof-mounted solar PV, which equates to approximately 16 solar panels.

Kerry is one of the 11 counties in the country in the first phase of the Solar for Schools scheme.  The Department of Education is contacting Kerry’s 132 primary schools, 26 secondary schools and 3 special schools to encourage them to apply.

Continued below…

.

Minister Foley said: “I hope that as many schools as possible in Kerry apply for this scheme to reduce their energy costs and their carbon emissions.”

Minister Foley said that the installation of solar panels would allow schools to make savings on their energy bills every year.

“It will significantly reduce costs for schools by between €1,200 and €1,600 euro per year if they have 16 solar PV panels installed,” she said.

The solar PV panels in schools will be connected to the electricity grid, so that the schools can generate income by powering other homes and businesses with clean energy when schools are closed at weekends and during school holidays.

Minister Foley said that schools can apply for the scheme quickly and easily online using the new School Hub system, once they get three quotes from solar PV contractors.

“It is our absolute intention that it will be very much a user friendly application process. So for the very first time, we’re using our geographic information system as a means for schools to liase wit hthe department. There will be very little time required for an online application and it should proceed very quickly,” she said.

Schools will be provided with funding from the Department of Education to have the PV panels installed by a registered contractor, with guidance from the Department of Education.

The rollout will begin in 11 counties – Kerry, Clare,  Donegal, Galway,  Kilkenny, Leitrim, Limerick, Offaly, Waterford, Wicklow and the Dublin City Council area in Dublin.

The intention is to include a further eight counties in phase two in Q2 2024 and the remaining eight counties in Q4 2024. It is intended that all eligible schools across the country will have the opportunity to apply to the scheme by end 2024.

A KILFLYNN school has received a special judges award in the Marine Institute’s Explorers Ocean Champion Awards 2023.

St Teresa’s NS Kilflynn receives the award for their healthy ocean school project: ‘Deep Sea Science Fair’. Presenting the award during science week, Cushla Dromgool-Regan, Explorers Education Programme Manager, congratulated the children, teachers, and outreach team for their great achievement.

“This award recognises the ‘innovative use of creativity and communication’ where the children and teachers transformed their school into an underwater world to engage parents and the community to learn more about the ocean,” she said.

Continued below…

.

Mrs Nora O’Regan, school principal explained:, “As part of their all-school project, the teachers and children got involved in practical STEAM project work where the children conducted experiments, developed their IT skills and created amazing poetry and artwork that was put on display for the parents and community to see.

“Working with the Explorers team and getting support from the parents was an excellent way to teach, using the ocean theme in the classroom, and throughout the whole school. We all got to learn something new – from hydrothermal vents at the bottom on the ocean floor, bioluminescent deep-sea species, as well local projects protecting our sand dunes,” she added.

“What was very special about St Teresa’s school project was the clear collaboration with the teachers and children and the pride they have sharing their work,” Ms Dromgool-Regan added. “Seeing the excitement and continued interest in learning about the ocean at the awards ceremony is what makes this project extra special.”

The Healthy Ocean School project and Ocean Champion Awards is organised through the Explorers Education Programme and funded by the Marine Institute. It is the only ocean-themed award for primary schools in Ireland and recognises the effort, commitment and collaboration of the school management, teachers, children and the Explorer outreach officers who have engaged in the all-school, marine-themed project.
