THIS week marked the beginning of a special journey for hundreds of youngsters in the Tralee area with the first day of school for junior infants.
CBS Primary School welcomed two classes and their teachers, Ms Quirke and Ms Donoghue had them settled in in no time, aided by the school therapy dog, Zorro, who proved a big hit.
Over in Caherleaheen it was a similar scene as the juniors got used to their surroundings in Ms O’Donnell’s class, feeling at ease immediately. Scroll down for photos…
THEY’RE one big family out in Caherleaheen National School and they welcomed 16 more into their home last week.
The junior infants began their educational journey last Wednesday and parents need not have worried about their little ones as they were in good hands with Ms Adrienne Heaslip as their teacher.
They’ve already made great friends and there were many happy faces when we visited on Friday. Scroll down for photos…
THE lovely, intimate Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rathass was the venue for a special event on Saturday morning.
There were 24 girls and boys from Caherleaheen NS making their First Holy Communion. They has been preparing for months under Ms de Hóra and they all had a wonderful day.
There was plenty time to linger in the sunshine afterwards to pose for photos to remember a momentous day in their young lives. Scroll down for photos…

CAHERLEAHEEN NS held Denim Day for Dementia, on Friday last as a fundraiser for the Alzheimers Society of Ireland.
Principal, Mary Connolly explained that “each year, in Ireland over 11,000 people develop dementia. That’s at least 30 people every day and anyone can get dementia – even people in their thirties, forties and fifties, not just our elderly loved ones and friends.”
“We wanted to help the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and to promote awareness of this disease among our pupils in a fun, gentle and child-friendly way. Children made posters and our teachers and student council led the promotion in the preceding days,” she said.

“Everyone arrived to school on Denim Day wearing big smiles, denim dungarees, denim jackets, shirts and jeans, in every shade of blue. Our weekly Dance Friday at break-times is very popular here in Caherleaheen, thanks to the wonder of Spotify. But today Neil Diamond’s ‘Forever in Blue Jeans’ went straight to No.1! We painted blue symbols on their faces and they danced through their breaks under blue skies. We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather,” said Mary.
There was great excitement and anticipation while staff and students collected, counted and bagged all the coins and notes.
The pupils announced that they had collected €460 over the intercom to huge cheers all round the school and they rounded it up to €600 by 2.30pm.
“It really was a huge success and I want to thank everyone, big and small, for their support and generosity,” said Mary Connolly. Scroll down for photos…
IT was a glorious Saturday afternoon for Confirmations in Tralee.
The Confirmation days for Caherleaheen and CBS Primary were held in the autumn over the past two years, but pupils this year could enjoy a spring day out with their families.
Caherleaheen sixth class pupils received the sacrament at the Immaculate Conception Church in Rathass, while CBS pupils were in St John’s Church at the same time. A memorable day then and congratulations to all the pupils. Scroll down for photos…
ENTERPRISE Rent-A-Car and Children’s Books Ireland today launched an initiative to give away 1,900 copies of ‘Why the Moon Travels’ by Oein DeBhairduin to children at 64 school across Ireland at an event in Tralee attended by Minister for Education Norma Foley.
The donation is part of Enterprise’s ROAD (Respect, Opportunity, Achievement and Diversity) Forward programme, which is a $55 million global initiative funded by Enterprise’s philanthropic arm, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation, to promote early childhood development, youth health and wellness, and career and college preparation.

Through the ROAD Forward initiative, more than 1,900 sixth class pupils from across Ireland will receive their own copy of Why the Moon Travels, a collection of folk tales rooted in the oral tradition of the Irish Traveller community collected by Oein DeBhairduin and beautifully illustrated by Leanne McDonagh.
Students at Caherleaheen National School in Tralee, were among the first pupils to receive copies of the book through the programme at a special event attended by Minister Foley.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Foley said; “I am delighted to be launching the ROAD Forward initiative here in Tralee. Introducing children to reading at a young age is crucial and initiatives like this go a long way to fostering an appetite for reading in our schools. It is said that books are uniquely portable magic and this initiative will transport a myriad of Irish children and young people into a world of Irish folk and fantasy through the power of reading.”
“‘Why the Moon Travels’ which preserves and showcases the wonderful oral tradition of the Irish Traveller community. I hope all the pupils receiving a copy of this book enjoy it and share with their friends and families the unique tales it captures.”
Speaking of the initiative, Enterprise’s Managing Director for Ireland, Brendan Grieve, said: ‘Enterprise has a long-standing relationship with communities across Ireland and we continue to support this through initiatives such as ROAD Forward, which stands for Respect, Opportunity, Achievement and Diversity. These are values that are central to everything we do at Enterprise.’
‘We’re incredibly proud to partner with Children’s Books Ireland and are grateful to Norma Foley for supporting today’s launch. It’s a brilliant book, which I hope will give a lot to the pupils. As a father of four, I understand the positive impact that a love of reading can have on children and the opportunities that it can bring as both a source of pleasure and empowerment. I hope the children enjoy Why the Moon Travels and that it helps to foster a life-long love of the written word.’
Elaina Ryan, CEO, Children’s Books Ireland said, ‘What a gift the Enterprise ROAD Forward programme will be for almost 2,000 sixth class students all over Ireland. ‘Why The Moon Travels’ won the Judges’ Special Award and the Eilís Dillon Award at our 2021 KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards, and we are sure that it will captivate young readers’ attention as much as it did ours. With Enterprise’s support, we will ensure that children have access to excellent stories from diverse perspectives and support wonderful Irish-published work in the process.’
Enterprise Holdings first announced its ROAD Forward programme in November 2020 through its philanthropic arm, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. The $55 million, global initiative focuses on promoting Respect, Opportunity, Achievement and Diversity (ROAD) for youth and families by addressing three areas in need of urgent attention: early childhood development, youth health and wellness, and career and college preparation.
Caherleaheen National School is hosting an open week until November 30th where parents and guardians of children can see what the school can offer.
Caherleaheen NS is a vibrant, happy and busy little school nestled in the beautiful setting of Caherleaheen, less than 3km from Tralee town.
It is a co-educational school which prides itself in it’s warm, inclusive and positive atmosphere.
Caherleaheen has a team of 7 class teachers, 4 Learning Support teachers and 5 Assistants, all working together to make child-centred teaching and learning a rewarding experience for all the children.
Prospective parents are invited to contact the school to arrange an informal, walkabout meeting with the principal, Mary Connolly, thus giving parents an opportunity to ask questions and get a ‘feel’ for the school, while it is in action.
Individual meetings are available between 9 and 10:30am and of course, all safety precautions will be employed.
The boys and girls of the Caherleaheen NS Class of 2021 were reunited on Sunday for their belated Confirmation Day.
The 23 friends wore the uniforms of their secondary schools for the ceremony celebrated by Fr Seán Jones while their former teacher Ms Bradley was delighted to see them all again.
Thankfully, the rain stayed away (as it has for all the Confirmations and First Communions so far this month!) so they could get some photos afterwards before heading off for private celebrations. Scroll down for photos…
WHILE the Class of 2020 finished their primary schooldays back in March, a belated Confirmation Day offered the former pupils of Caherleaheen a chance to meet up again.
The pupils, who were just weeks away from receiving the sacrament back in early spring, gathered at St John’s Church on Saturday afternoon for the shortened ceremony.
They may be spread among different schools now, but the friendships remain and they all enjoyed the reunion before breaking up again to head off for private family celebrations. Scroll down for photos…
After months of waiting, Caherleaheen NS second class pupils and their families gathered at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rathass for the First Holy Communion ceremony.
The next number of weeks will see First Holy Communions take place all over the county so those long-booked bouncy castles will finally see some action and hotels and restaurants will see much-needed business.
The weather stayed dry yesterday morning so the 14 children from Caherleaheen making their communion could enjoy some time with their friends outside afterwards before heading off for private celebrations with their families. Scroll down for photos…
The last few months have been traumatic for many and with schools closing and social distancing restrictions in place, children have been having a hard time.
It’s been especially tough on sixth class pupils who were together with their classmates in March for the last time and won’t be together with the same group again.
Well, like some other schools in Tralee area, Caherleaheen NS decided to reunite them one last time on Thursday afternoon by hosting a graduation ceremony at the school playground.

Pupils came in two separate groups, at different times to receive a certificate, a booklet of their time in the school, a ‘Class of 2020’ hoodie and also to hear Principal Mary Connolly extol their individual qualities in front of their proud parents who stayed outside and observed the ceremony from behind the school gates.
The pupils themselves were seated around two metres apart observing social distancing guidelines while teaching staff were also present to make sure everything went off smoothly and safely.
“It was probably extra special this year,” said Mary Connolly. “We started off with a Zoom session with the pupils and then we organised this event. We’re all so proud of them and wish them the best in the future.”
CAHERLEAHEEN NS and Parents Association will host their ‘Gourmet Spring Grill’ fundraiser to support a facility which has been a huge support to parents of a child attending the school.
The event on this coming Friday, March 13 at The Pavilion in Ballygarry House Hotel, will support the Hugh’s House charity, located on the doorsteps of both Temple Street and The Rotunda hospitals, which provides free accommodation for the families of children requiring long-term hospital care.
The Parents Association’s commitment to raising funds for Hugh’s House comes from their wish to show their heartfelt support for the wonderful parents of a pupil in the school who stayed at Hugh’s House for over a year.

Their difficult journey has received considerable local and national media coverage and both their story, and their recognition of the role Hugh’s House in supporting their family, has captured the hearts of many.

ST John’s Church was bustling with activity just before 7.30pm last night, as children from Caherleaheen NS prepared for their annual Christmas concert.
Hundreds of family members were in attendance to watch the little ones perform a nativity inspired segment, while other classes filled the church with the festive favourites they have been rehearsing for the past few weeks.
An enjoyable evening for all, especially since the Christmas concert always means the holidays can’t be that far way! Scroll down for photos…
HALLOWEEN is here with children (and no doubt a few adults) going all out with make-up and costumes for trick or treating tonight.
Well, just before mid-term, the pupils at Caherleaheen decided to put this creativity to good uses by holding a fancy dress fundraiser.
They raised €500 for Jigsaw Kerry at the school by dressing up last Friday with the good folks from ‘Art and Hobby’ painting the pupils faces on the day. Each child paid €2 or more for the great cause and as you can see they made a great effort. Scroll down for photos (supplied by the school)…
WELL here’s a good way to publicise your upcoming school open week…get the kids to do it!
The Junior Infants at Caherleaheen NS have only been in school about six weeks so they’re still new to all this uniform and education business.
Well a parent of one of the pupils, Michelle Culloty, made a short video asking them about the school, what Principal Mary Connolly gets up to, what they want to be when they grow up (there’s budding princesses, mermaids and egg and spoon race coaches!) and more. Check it out below.
The school is holding an open week from Monday, October 21 to Friday, October, 25, where parents of children starting school next year can come and find out all about Caherleaheen NS.
FRIDAY was Kerry jersey day around the county and uniforms were replaced with green and gold attire in schools around the county.
This was the case when we called to Caherleaheen and Spa national schools to photograph the new junior infants.
Teacher Adrienne Heaslip said the children were settling in well in Caherleaheen with a similar story in Ciara O’Reilly’s class in Spa NS. Scroll down for photos…
WITH the holidays closing in, Caherleaheen NS held a special day to celebrate some recent achievements by the pupils and the school.
Monday saw Sean Kelly MEP and Sean Ryan of Aspen Grove pay a visit to help raise the three flags — Green Flag, Junior Entrepreneur Programme Flag and Health Promoting School/Active Schools Flag — in the school yard and to recognise the school receiving the Science Foundation Ireland Science Plaque this year.
It was also an opportunity to honour the success of the school’s athletes who won medals in the recent Kerry Schools meeting. These included individual winners Ruby Crean, Tadhg Healy and Sean Murphy as well as the relay teams from first/second and third/fourth class.

Paul Griffin of Tralee Harriers was also honoured with a Caheleaheen Community Medal but unfortunately could not attend on the day.
Principal of Caherleaheen NS, Mary Connolly, also thanked Sean Ryan of Aspen Grove for donating a defibrillator to the school. With all that activity and hard work, both staff and pupils are due a well-earned break when they get their holidays at the end of next week.
IF your child is starting school this September, then a visit to Caherleaheen this coming week is definitely worth considering as they are holding an open week every morning from 9am to 10.30am, Monday to Friday.
Caherleaheen National School is a vibrant, active and busy school with almost 200 boys and girls, 7 Class teachers, 4 Learning Support teachers and 5 assistants.
“The children here are fantastic. We nurture an open, warm, friendly yet firm relationship with all our kids. It can be both exciting and heart-breaking to see them leave after eight years here,” said Principal Mary Connolly.
“We know them so well and all their various achievements fill us with pride. This week, prospective parents are invited to call in to see us in action,” said Mary.
It’s a nice informal opportunity to meet Mary Connolly and get a ‘feel’ for the school.
“The teachers here do an amazing job tailoring curricular programmes to ensure that all children achieve to the best of their ability as well as meeting their social and emotional needs,” added Mary.
“There are so many challenges facing kids these days: social media and its associated dangers and anxieties. We take these challenges seriously and regard parents as our partners. Without them, a lot of what we have achieved these last few years would not have been possible.
Our standardised testing scores in Literacy and Numeracy are consistently above average each year. Parents and children value and support all our initiatives such as Literacy lift Off, Aistear, SPHE, STEM, Physical health initiatives, Community or religious engagements and anything we throw at them really!”
“The teaching and assistant staff are the backbone- a real team. We collaborate and share teaching strategies, as well as engaging in continuous professional training. Teachers keep learning too, not just our pupils! It’s a great school, nestled in a beautiful rural setting, just 2km south of Tralee town. We are extremely proud of every child who walks through our doors, each day,” said Mary.
THREE generations of families enjoyed a wonderful time at Caherleaheen National School on Friday for Grandparents Day.
The children were busy for the past week or so, gathering photos and information about their grandparents and the occasion also served a celebration of St Brigid as Principal Mary Connolly explained.
“The tradition started with the previous principal, Donal O’Connor. His father before him was also a principal whose birthday was around St Brigid’s Day and he loved making crosses, so we’ve kept it up and we try to hold Grandparents Day around this time every year.
Continued below…
“The children really enjoyed working on the art projects and writing about their grandparents. The sixth class pupils interviewed their grandparents all week and were told very interesting things about courtship when they were young, while the junior classes were more curious about what they ate, what was school like and how cross the teachers were ‘long ago’,” said Mary.
Those present received a blessing of the throats from special guest Fr Dan Ahern and his brother Fr Pat Ahern.
“We’ve adopted Fr Dan Ahern who lives nearby as our ‘grandparent’ of Caherleaheen and he comes to the school about five times a year to talk to the children, so it was lovely to have him here,” said the Principal.
The grandparents clearly enjoyed the occasion which was a great way of meeting the other parents and grandparents of the children. Scroll down for photos…
WITH less than three weeks to go until Santa arrives, children are understandably getting excited about what the big man will bring them.
With that in mind, parent at Caherleaheen NS, Michelle Culloty, assisted by teachers Adrienne Heaslip and Caroline Brick, put together a clip of the Junior and Senior Infants discussing their take on the festivities involved.
What did we learn? Some of their grandads have big bellies, Santa will be bringing teachers a whole range of presents (including a pet seagull!) and what their Christmas dinners will look like. Have a look below…
PUPILS at Caherleaheen are taking artistic inspiration from a wonderful new mural painted by an alumnus of the school .
Many eagle-eyed art lovers may recognise the artist’s style (in the photo above) from his other work in the town on the gable of Croí Restaurant, but this time Gabriel Galway went back to the place where he went to school to create something very special. He explained how it came about.
“I got all the kids to draw up design ideas for the mural. I looked through them and many featured a rainbow which represents the school, along with other ideas, so I talked to Mary [Connolly, Principal]. We spoke about Irish folklore and The Children Of Lir. We wanted to incorporate the idea of children influencing each other, helping one another while growing up in school and becoming their own person.”
Continued below…
Gabriel painted the four children shedding the feathers and becoming human again, using colours to show the connection between them. It took about four days for him to complete during the mid-term break, using paint sponsored by Tony Griffin of Pat McDonnell Paints.
Mary Connolly was understandably delighted with the result, saying it was wonderful that the children saw the sketches beforehand and were surprised by the result when they came back after the mid-term break.
Gabriel has also painted a mural recently in the children’s play area in the Manor West Hotel, but he is currently working on a graphic novel which he has pitched and is hoping to get published by US company Image Comics, who publish ‘The Walking Dead’ series.

PUPILS at Caherleaheen National School went to great efforts a couple of weeks ago to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation.
As part of the Hospice’s National Coffee Morning event, teacher Damien Finn’s fourth class pupils from the school held an event co-ordinated by teacher Bríd Murphy and eventually raised €540.
The pupils and their parents made up a lot of sweet and savoury goodies the night before and on Friday the school invited the parents and the other pupils in the school to buy something for €1.

“We were delighted to help out, it’s a great cause and it touched every family,” said Principal Mary Connolly.
Maura O’Sullivan and Nuala Finnegan were on hand on Thursday to accept a cheque for €546. “We’re very happy and grateful to the pupils, parents and the staff for their efforts,” said Maura.
Junior infants began their schooldays on Thursday and took no time at all to settle in at Caherleaheen and O’Brennan schools.
There were happy faces all around when we called to take a few photos of the the new arrivals on Friday.
There were 21 juniors in Caherleaheen while 18 boys and girls started at O’Brennan and teachers said they were all settled in. The fun is only beginning. Scroll down for photos…
THE kids from Caherleaheen had something to celebrate recently as they won the overall Best School award in the Tralee Area Primary Schools Sports day.
Held at the Tralee Harriers grounds on the Dan Spring Road recently, schools from all around the town competed in track and field events.
Pupils from Caherleaheen were placed highly in numerous events, especially the relay, and came out on top.

“Every relay team got a medal,” said Principal of Caherleaheen NS, Mary Connolly. “We had two golds, two silvers and two bronze as well as a number of individual medals. We won by 14 points and the pupils did a lap of honour at the end, they were delighted.”
It seems the pupils have caught the athletics bug now so they can look forward to more success in the years to come. Scroll down for photos…
THEY were blessed with the weather yesterday morning for two First Holy Communion services in Tralee, as the big day arrived for Scoil Eoin and Caherleaheen NS pupils.
There were 79 pupils from Ms Daly, Ms Dennehy and Ms Sheehan’s classes at Scoil Eoin, receiving the Host for the first time in Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church.
Meanwhile, it was momentous occasion at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rathass for the 20 pupils from Ms Gillian’s second class at Caherleaheen NS.
