People Of Kerry Urged To Share ‘One Sunrise Together’ For Darkness Into Light

.

PIETA House and Electric Ireland are encouraging the people of Kerry to share ‘One Sunrise Together’ on May 8 for Darkness into Light.

Pieta and Electric Ireland urge people to sign up at darknessintolight.ie and take part in a special Darkness Into Light Sunrise on May 8th.

This year, participants can walk, run, swim, hike, bike or simply share One Sunrise Together for Darkness Into Light, as organised walks are not possible due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Over a year on from when the country went into lockdown, Pieta’s services are in demand more than ever and they need the public’s support.

Electric Ireland is proud to support Pieta for a ninth year and together with Pieta are encouraging people to register at www.darknessintolight.ie to take part in a special Darkness into Light that can unite us all whilst still staying physically apart.

By taking part in Darkness Into Light, participants will unite in every corner of Ireland to help shine a light on suicide and self-harm while raising vital funds for Pieta’s lifesaving services.

Last year when it wasn’t possible to all walk together for Darkness into Light, Pieta faced a funding crisis, but Ireland came together as one community and got behind the event, with hundreds of thousands rising at dawn and sharing sunrise moments from across the country.

The support that shone through was nothing short of amazing with over €4 million  raised following a tremendous public fundraising effort to ensure Pieta could continue to deliver their services through 2020.

Pieta’s counselling services have remained available throughout lockdown with phone, video and face-to-face appointments, in 2020, Pieta delivered over 52,000 hours of therapy and answered over 70,000 calls and texts for help through their 24/7 crisis helpline.

Every single person faces challenges and Pieta worked with well-known ambassadors, including Miriam O’Callaghan, Donal Ryan and Oliver Dingley who shared  Sunrise Notes, detailing how they have found light in the dark, especially over the last 12 months. Sunrise Notes from the ambassadors are available to read at https://www.electricireland.ie/sunrise-notes.

Pieta is also encouraging the nation to take pen to paper to write their own Sunrise Note and share their stories of finding hope in the darkness online using the hashtag, #DIL2021. The concept of writing and sharing a heartfelt note will help normalise the challenges people have been facing this year, bringing people together through shared experiences of finding light in the darkness.

THE Darkness Into Light Tralee walk may have taken place three weeks ago, but the funds are still coming in.

On Friday, the organisers and Con O’Connor of Pieta House were in High Street to collect a cheque for €600 from physiotherapist, Corinne Evans.

Corinne, who has taken part in the Tralee walk since it started three years ago, wanted to do something extra to help raise funds.

“We decided to donate all the cash takings from the day before the walk (Friday, May 10) to Darkness Into Light,” said Corinne.

“We put a video announcing that on Facebook the night before and having seen that, we had people just knocking on the door and giving us €5 and €10 notes. One woman travelled in from Listowel and gave €50.”

“My mom and my sister do it with me every year. My mom said to me ‘I intend to be doing this until I’m put in the grave’,” added Corinne, who thanked everyone for their donations.

Con O’Connor thanked Corinne and the staff at her practice, who also took part in the walk. “We meet Corinne every year at the walk and her support is appreciated. To give up a day’s takings is a wonderful gesture and not many businesses would do that,” said Con.

TRALEE’S Darkness Into Light event was a massive success again last May and this year’s walk was launched at a cheque presentation at Kirby’s Brogue Inn last night.

The cheque of €41,198.97 raised in the 2018 event was presented to Con O’Connor, Co-ordinator of Pieta House in the South West, by the Tralee DIL committee.

Outgoing Chairman Aidan O’Sullivan said he was thrilled that in his final year the Tralee walk had raised such a large amount.

He thanked the people of Tralee and surrounding areas along with the local businesses who have supported the walk in Tralee from day one.

He expressed a special word of thanks to the hard working committee and singled out Marilyn O’Shea, who is also stepping down from the committee this year, for special mention as she has done a phenomenal job in transforming the town park into a very special place every year which is the highlight for everyone doing the walk.

Incoming Chairperson Ann Leahy O’Shea thanked both Aidan and Marilyn for all their hard work and said she is really looking forward to her new role.

She said she has major plans for the Tralee Walk in 2019 and both she and the committee will be looking for Tralee to be an even bigger event this year on May 11.

The new website is now live (you can register for this year’s event by clicking here) with early bird offers and after a few teething problems last year it’s now much simpler and faster to navigate around with teeshirts being delivered within a few days.

Put the date into your diary as it’s an event that now has over 200,000 participants worldwide.

It has over 155 walks in Ireland with 50 more around the world and it has now become a global movement of people supporting mental health.

If you haven’t done it then its time to put it on your bucket list for the year as it really is a very special event and not to be missed.

Tralee DIL is always looking for volunteers so if anyone is interested just send a message to their Facebook page or contact any committee member if theyd like to help out.

People Urged To Take Part In Dingle’s ‘Darkness Into Light’ Event

.
The launch of the Dingle Darkness Into Light last week.

IF you’re in the west of the county, then you may want to take part in a great event coming up this May.

Darkness Into Light – Pieta House’s flagship fundraising awareness event – celebrates its tenth year this May 12 in over 150 venues in Ireland and across the world and Dingle is one of those places.

Darkness Into Light Dingle was launched last Wednesday in the Skellig Hotel Dingle and  chairperson of the Dingle committee, Róisín Uí Bheaglaoi is encouraging the local community to take part.

Continued below…

.

“Dingle has been incredibly supportive of the event since our first year in 2015. Last year, 600 people took part from the local community, and we would love to see that go up this year. Suicide and self-harm are serious problems in Kerry and we need to face them together.”

Darkness Into Light began in 2009 when 400 people came together in Dublin’s Phoenix Park to raise awareness about suicide and self-harm. From these humble beginnings, Darkness Into Light has blossomed into a global movement against suicide and self-harm, with over 200,000 expected to take part on Saturday, May 12th this year. This unique event begins at 4.15am as participants walk 5km routes around the world and finish as the dawn is breaking, journeying together from Darkness Into Light.

Speaking on the importance of the event, Pieta House CEO, Brian Higgins, said, “I want to ask everybody to wake up and join us in support of families and friends affected by suicide and self-harm. All of our services are free, but the demand for them is ever-increasing. We all need to wake up to the stigmas that lead people to self-harm and into suicidal crisis, and to the doors of Pieta House.”

Registration for this year’s event is opened on March 22 and is exclusively online at www.darknessintolight.ie. Community registration events will take place closer to the date; for updates please find Darkness Into Light Dingle on Facebook.

THE first Darkness Into Light Tralee event, held in the early hours of Saturday morning, was an emotional celebration of all that is good about the people in our community.

They turned up in their thousands – figures mentioned were between 2,000 to 3,000 – at CBS The Green for the fundraiser in aid of Pieta House and to highlight the vital message that there is help and support out there for people suffering from mental health issues.

Colin Aherne – the driving force behind the Tralee event – and his team deserve massive credit for the fantastic way it was organised. People started turning up at CBS well before the 4.15am start to meet friends and pose for photos.

Later they made their way to the starting point – the entrance to CBS – where Colin introduced a member of the ‘Serving Smiles’ group in Mercy Mounthawk  who read a poem of ‘Gratitude’ written by Joan Freeman of Pieta House (see excerpt in video below) to the masses gathered.

After that, Kerry Rose Julett Culloty cut the tape to start the walk. It was incredible to see the huge crowd make their way out on to Dan Spring Road and around the route. Most came back to the CBS The Green gym where the team from Kirbys Brogue Inn had tea, coffee and food prepared for a very early breakfast for the participants, while Gaudinos also provided coffees and teas during the morning.

It was an inspiring event that will only grow and grow in the coming years no doubt and shows the spirit and generosity of the people of Tralee and the surrounding area. Well done all! Scroll down for video and photos…

WELL Colin ‘Poshey’ Aherne outdid himself today!

The man who has been working tirelessly to promote the ‘Darkness Into Light’ event in Tralee went out to west Kerry this morning to try to get the support of two very influential people.

The ‘Top Gear’ presenters, Matt LeBlanc and Chris Evans, were in Ballydavid this morning for a match between Dingle and An Ghaeltacht as part of their filming and Poshey managed to get the two lads to lend their support to the campaign.

In a facebook post earlier, he described what happened:

“Met with actor Matt LeBlanc today. Had a brief talk with him about what Pieta House do in Ireland and what the walk on May 7th is about. He said it didn’t matter what charity it is, suicide prevention and awareness is massive and he hopes loads of people come out and support this event.”

‘Darkness Into Light’ Event To Be Held In Tralee This Year

Kerry ETB new insert
.

Tralee Darkness into LightTRALEE will be one of the Kerry towns to host the ‘Darkness Into Light’ event this coming May.

The event, in aid of Pieta House, has captured the hearts of people all over the country as a fundraiser and a powerful way of raising awareness of mental health issues.

It has been a huge success over the past number of years with thousands taking part.

It will take place at 4.15am on May 7 with more details to be ironed out in the coming weeks.

A Facebook page on the event, ‘Darkness Into Light Tralee’, has been set up which you can like by clicking here. A post on the page earlier read:

“We are delighted to announce OFFICIALLY that Pieta House’s Darkness Into Light is coming to Tralee on the 7th of may at 4.15 am. With the new Pieta House in Tralee, we are really looking forward to making this first year event in Tralee a real special one for everyone. More details to follow soon keep an eye on the page and share the page with friends thanks.”

The man behind the Tralee event is Colin Aherne, who co-organised the successful Walk 4 Life event last April raising awareness of mental health and suicide awareness/prevention.

That event – which will be held in September this year – raised nearly €6,000 for organisations throughout Kerry that help to promote positive mental health and the message of suicide awareness and prevention.

“I went to pieta house last year about bringing it to Tralee, but was too late,” said Colin. “When I had the ‘Walk For Life’, Pieta House was a chosen charity. Last year it was too late to have the event in Tralee, so this year I was contacted to do the event and I gladly said yes.”

“It’s means a lot to me to get this event to Tralee as it creates great awareness of the great service that Pieta House provides and since there is a new Pieta House in town, it gives the Tralee event more meaning,” he said.

The Darkness Into Light event takes place around the county this weekend.

TRALEE Bay Swimming Club are set to take the plunge this weekend as they get ready to take part in what will be Kerry’s first ever ‘Darkness Into Light Swim’ with funds from this going towards Pieta House.

Tralee is amongst the few locations in Kerry that will not be hosting a ‘Darkness Into Light Walk’ which will be taking place around the country this weekend to raise funds for Pieta House.

The swimming club therefore has taken it upon itself to do their own little part to help fight suicide by organising the swim.

The swimmers will be meeting at 5am in Fenit this Saturday May 9 and then will proceed to swim along the shore and will cross their own finishing line just as dawn is breaking.

For safety reasons, the event is only being offered via invitation only and is geared more towards the experienced swimmers.

The club will be collecting donations for the event with all proceeds going towards helping the suicide and self-harm prevention work being done in the Pieta House centres in both Tralee and Castleisland.

If swimming isn’t your thing, then you can still sign up to take part in the various walks that will be happening in Killarney, Dingle and Listowel this weekend by clicking on the website here.
